They should quickly realize that negative numbers are counter-intuitive because they are probably quite used to larger absolute values meaning larger numbers. Students should be able to recognize easily that a positive number is always greater than a negative number and that between two negative integers, the one with the lesser absolute value is actually the greater number. Adding and Subtracting Integers

Two-color counters are fantastic manipulatives for teaching and learning about integer addition. Two-color counters are usually plastic chips that come with yellow on one side and red on the other side. They might be available in other colors, so you'll have to substitute your own colors in the following description.

Adding with two-color counters is actually quite easy. You model the first number with a pile of chips flipped to the correct side and you also model the second number with a pile of chips flipped to the correct side; then you mash them all together, take out the zeros (if any) and behold, you have your answer! Need further elaboration? Read on!

The correct side means using red to model negative numbers and yellow to model positive numbers. You would model —5 with five red chips and 7 with seven yellow chips. Mashing them together should be straight forward although, you'll want to caution your students to be less exuberant than usual, so none of the chips get flipped. Taking out the zeros means removing as many pairs of yellow and red chips as you can. You can do this because —1 and 1 when added together equals zero (this is called the zero principle). If you remove the zeros, you don't affect the answer. The benefit of removing the zeros, however, is that you always end up with only one color and as a consequence, the answer to the integer question. If you have no chips left at the end, the answer is zero!

Subtracting with integer chips is a little different. Integer subtraction can be thought of as removing. To subtract with integer chips, begin by modeling the first number (the minuend) with integer chips. Next, remove the chips that would represent the second number from your pile and you will have your answer. Unfortunately, that isn't all there is to it. This works beautifully if you have enough of the right color chip to remove, but often times you don't. For example, 5 - (-5), would require five yellow chips to start and would also require the removal of five red chips, but there aren't any red chips! Thank goodness, we have the zero principle. Adding or subtracting zero (a red chip and a yellow chip) has no effect on the original number, so we could add as many zeros as we wanted to the pile, and the number would still be the same. All that is needed then is to add as many zeros (pairs of red and yellow chips) as needed until there are enough of the correct color chip to remove. In our example 5 - (-5), you would add 5 zeros, so that you could remove five red chips. You would then be left with 10 yellow chips (or +10) which is the answer to the question.

These worksheets include groups of questions that all result in positive or negative sums or differences. They can be used to help students see more clearly how certain integer questions end up with positive and negative results. In the case of addition of negative and positive integers, some people suggest looking for the "heavier" value to determine whether the sum will be positive of negative. More technically, it would be the integer with the greater absolute value. For example, in the question (−2) + 5, the absolute value of the positive integer is greater, so the sum will be positive.

In subtraction questions, the focus is on the subtrahend (the value being subtracted). In positive minus positive questions, if the subtrahend is greater than the minuend, the answer will be negative. In negative minus negative questions, if the subtrahend has a greater absolute value, the answer will be positive. Vice-versa for both situations. Alternatively, students can always convert subtraction questions to addition questions by changing the signs (e.g. (−5) − (−7) is the same as (−5) + 7; 3 − 5 is the same as 3 + (−5)).

Multiplying integers is very similar to multiplication facts except students need to learn the rules for the negative and positive signs. In short, they are:

In words, multiplying two positives or two negatives together results in a positive product, and multiplying a negative and a positive in either order results in a negative product. So, -8 × 8, 8 × (-8), -8 × (-8) and 8 × 8 all result in an absolute value of 64, but in two cases, the answer is positive (64) and in two cases the answer is negative (-64).

Should you wish to develop some "real-world" examples of integer multiplication, it might be a stretch due to the abstract nature of negative numbers. Sure, you could come up with some scenario about owing a debt and removing the debt in previous months, but this may only result in confusion. 6th Grade Integers: An Introduction to Integers for 6th Grade Students

In 6th grade, you'll learn how to compare and order positive and negative integers. You'll also study absolute value. Read on for an explanation of these concepts and more!

Intro to Integers

Integers include all whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3…) and the negatives of the natural numbers (-1, -2, -3…). Up until 6th grade, you've probably just studied positive integers, but now you'll learn to work with negative integers as well.

Comparing Integers

You may already know how to compare whole numbers using the greater than and less than signs. For instance, 5 > 3 and 8 < 10. You can use these signs with negative integers, too. Just remember the integer that's farther to the right on the number line is greater. That means if you're comparing a negative integer with a positive one, the positive integer will always be greater because it's farther to the right. If you're comparing two negative integers, the one that's closer to zero is greater. Here are a few examples:

Ordering Integers

When we compare more than two integers, this is called ordering . To put a set of integers in order, follow the same rules that you use for comparing, and pay close attention to whether you're listing the integers from greatest to least or least to greatest. Here's a sample list of integers ordered from least to greatest:

-12 < -4 < 0 < 4 < 12

Absolute Value

An integer's absolute value is its physical distance from zero on a number line. Absolute values are always stated as positive integers. Since 14 and -14 are both the same physical distance from zero - just in opposite directions - their absolute values are both 14. Absolute value is indicated by placing vertical bars on either side of a number. For example, |-14| = 14 is read, 'The absolute value of -14 equals 14.' Here are a few more examples:

Once you've mastered absolute values, you might be asked to compare them like you did with integers. Remember that you're comparing the absolute values, not the integers themselves. For instance, |-7| > 6 because |-7| = 7 and 7 > 6.

Integers in Real Life

Positive and negative integers are used in lots of real-life situations to show amounts relative to zero. For example, when the temperature drops below zero, we say that it is negative. School might be canceled if it is -30 degrees outside. Positive and negative integers are also used with money. If you spend more money than you have in your bank account, your balance will be negative, which means you owe the bank money. For instance, if you had $50 in your account, and you spent $75, your balance would be -$25.

Set of positive numbers, zero and negative numbers is known as integers. ..., −5, −4, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...

1, 2 , 3, 4, 5, ... are knwon as positive integers. −1, −2, −3, −4, −5 are known as negative integers

The number zero is an integer. It is neither positive nor negative.

Let's draw a line and mark a point in the middle of it. We number this point with zero.

Integers Number Line-1

We mark equal distances on the right as well on the left of zero. On the right side of zero label the points with numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... and on the left side of the zero label the points with numbers −1, −2, −3, −4, −5, ....

So, we can represent all the integers on a number line as shown in the above figure.

Between two given integers, the integer occurring on the right side on the number line is greater than that occurring on the left side.

For Example.       5 > 2, since 5 is to the right of 2.       3 > 0, since 3 is to the right of 0.       0 > −2, since 0 is to the right of −2.       −5 > −8, since −5 is to the right of −8.

Some basic rules are provided below. 1. Every positive integer is greater than zero. 2. Zero is greater than every negative integer. 3. Every positive integer is greater than every negative integer.

The absolute value of an integer 'p' is the numerical value of 'p' regardless of it's sign. We denote the absolute value of 'p', by |p|. Let's see some examples.

Example 1. Find the absolute value of −5. Solution. |−5| = 5.

Example 2. Find the absolute value of 12. Solution. |12| = 12.

Example 3. Find the value of |−12 + (−15)|. Solution. |−12 + (&minus15)| = |−12 −15)| = |−27| = 27.

Example 4. Find the value of |25 − (−45 + 15)|. Solution. |25 − (−45 + 15)| = |25 − (−30)| = |25 + 30| = |55| = 55

We have already known how to add two whole numbers using number lines. Let's see some examples.

Let's extend this method of addition of whole numbers to the integers.

Integers Addition

When integers have same signs, we add their absolute values and assign the same sign to the sum. Let's see some examples.

Example 1. Add + 4 and +5. Solution. (+4) + (+5) = + {|+4| + |+5|} = + {4 + 5} = +9

Example 2. Add −5 and −8. Solution. (−5) + (−8) = − {|−5| + |−8|} = − {5 + 8} = −13

When integers have different signs, we determine the difference of their absolute values, and assign the sign of the integer having greater absolute value. Let's see some examples.

Example 1. Add −7 and 19. Solution. Absolute value of −7 = |−7| = 7 Absolute value of 19 = |+19| = 19 Difference of absolute values is 19 − 7 = 12 Since the integer with greater absolute value is +19, and it's sign is +. (−7) + (+19) = +12

Example 2. Add −25 and +5. Solution. Absolute value of −25 = |−25| = 25 Absolute value of +5 = |+5| = 5 Difference of absolute values is 25 − 5 = 20 Since the integer with greater absolute value is −25, and it's sign is −. (−25) + (+5) = −20

1. If 'a' and 'b' are any two integers, then a + b is also an integer. 2. If 'a' and 'b' are any two integers, then a + b = b + a. 3. If 'a', 'b' and 'c' are any three integers, then a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c 4. If 'a' is in integer, then a + 0 = 0 + a = a. 5. The sum of any integer and it's opposite integer (known as additive inverse) is zero. a + (−a) = 0 6. If a > b, then a + c > b + c and if a < b, a + c < b + c, where a, b, c are any integers.

To subtract a positive integer, we must move to the left on the number line. Let's see some examples.

To subtract a negative integer, we must move to the right on the number line. Let's have a look at some examples.

Integers Subtraction

Subtraction of one integer from another integer is same as adding the additive inverse of the integer that is being subtracted to the other integer. Let's see some examples.

Example 1. Subtract 6 from 15. Solution. Additive inverse of 6 is −6. 15 − 6 = 15 + (−6) = 9.

Example 2. Subtract 5 from −7. Solution. Additive inverse of 5 is −5. −7 − 5 = −7 + (−5) = −12.

Example 3. Subtract −232 from −165. Solution. −165 − (−232) = −165 + 232 = 67

Revision Notes on Integers

Introduction to integers.

There are so many situations where we have to use negative numbers. Negative Numbers are the numbers with the negative sign. These numbers are less than zero.

We use negative numbers to represent temperature.

Temperature

Where +10 shows 10° hotter than 0 and -10 shows 10° colder than 0.

Successor and Predecessor

If we move 1 to the right then it gives the successor of that number and if we move 1 to the left then it gives the predecessor of that number.

In the case of accounting we use negative sign to represent the loss and positive to represent the profit.

In the case of sea level, we use a negative sign to represent the height of the place below the sea level and positive sign to represent the place above the sea level.

The collection of whole numbers and negative numbers together is called the Integers .

All the positive numbers are positive integers and all the negative numbers are negative integers. Zero is neither a positive nor a negative integer.

To represent the integers on a number line, first, we have to draw a line and mark a point zero on it.

Then mark all the positive integers on the right side with the same distance as 1, 2, 3… and the entire negative numbers on the left side as -1,-2,-3…

To mark (-7) we have to move 7 points to the left of zero.

Ordering of Integers

Ordering of Integers

From the above number line, we can see that as we go to the right side the numbers are getting larger and as we move to the left the numbers are getting smaller.

Hence, any number on the right side on the number line is greater than the number on its left.

5 is to the right of 2 so 5>2.

4 is to the right of -2, so 4>-2.

-4 is to the left of -1, so -4 < -1.

Some facts about Integers

Any positive integer is always greater than any negative integer.

Zero is less than every positive integer.

Zero is greater than every negative integer.

Zero doesn’t come in any of the negative and positive integers.

Addition of Integers

1. Addition of Two Positive Integers

If you have to add two positive integers then simply add them as natural numbers.

(+6) + (+7) = 6 + 7 = 13

2. Addition of Two Negative Integers

If we have to add two negative integers then simply add them as natural numbers and then put a negative sign on the answer.

(-6) + (-7) = - (6+7) = -13

3. Addition of One Negative and One Positive Integer

If we have to add one negative and one positive integer then simply subtract the numbers and put the sign of the bigger integer. We will decide the bigger integer ignoring the sign of the integers.

(-6) + (7) = 1 (bigger integer 7 is positive integer)

(6) + (-7) = -1(bigger integer 7 is negative integer)

Addition of Integers on a Number Line

Add 3 and 4 on the number line.

To add 3 and 4, first, we move 3 steps to the right of zero then again move 4 steps to the right from point 3.

Addition of Two Positive Integers

As we reached to the point 7, hence (+3) + (+4) = +7

This shows that the sum of two positive integers is always positive .

2.  Addition of Two Negative Integers

Add (-2) and (-5) using a number line.

To add (-2) and (-5), first we move 2 steps to the left of zero then again move 5 steps to the left of (-2).

As we reached to the point (-7), hence (-2) + (-5) = -7.

This shows that the sum of two negative integers is always negative .

a. If a positive integer is greater than the negative integer

To add (+6) and (-2), first we have to move 6 steps to the right from zero then move 2 steps to the left of point 6.

A positive integer is greater than the negative integer

As we reached to the point 4, hence (+6) + (-2) = +4

b. If a negative integer is greater than the positive integer

To add (-5) and (+4), first we have to move 5 steps to the left of zero then move 4 steps to the right from point (-5).

A negative integer is greater than the positive integer

As we reached to the point -1, hence (-5) + (+4) = (-1)

4. Additive Inverse

If we add numbers like (-7) and 7 then we get the result as zero. So these are called the Additive inverse of each other.

If we add (-2) + (2), then first we move 2 steps to the left of zero then we move two steps to the right of (-2).so finally we reached to zero.

Hence, if we add the positive and negative of the same number then we get the zero.

What is the additive inverse of 4 and (-8)?

The additive inverse of 4 is (-4).

The additive inverse of (-8) is 8.

Subtraction of Integers on Number Line

If we subtract an integer from another integer then we simply add the additive inverse of that integer.

(-3) – (-2) = (-3) + 2 = -1

(-3) – (+2) = (-3) + (-2) = -5

1. Subtraction of Two Positive Integers

Subtract 2 from 5.

To subtract 2 from 5, first, we move 5 steps to the right from zero then move 2 steps back to the left.

As we reached to 3 hence, 5 – (+2) = 5 – 2 = 3

2. Subtraction of Two Negative Integers

Subtract (-12) from (-8).

To subtract (-12) from (-8), first, we have to move 8 steps to the left of zero then move 12 steps to the right of (-8).

As we reached to 4, hence (-8) – (-12) = (-8) + (12) = 4

3. Subtraction of One Negative and One Positive Integer

a. To subtract a positive integer from any other integer .

Subtract 3 from (-4)

To subtract (-4) from (3), first, we have to move 4 steps to the left of zero then move 3 steps more to the left.

To subtract a positive integer from any other integer.

As we reached to (-7), hence (-4) – (+3) = (-4) + (-3) = -7.

b. To subtract a negative integer from any other integer

Subtract (-3) from (4)

To subtract (-3) from (4), first, we have to move 4 steps to the right of zero then move 3 steps more to the right.

To subtract a negative integer from any other integer

As we reached to (7), hence (4) – (-3) = (4) + (+3) = +7

Question 1: Evaluate the following:

(i) 22 – ( –87)

(ii) 198 + ( –12)

(iii) –16.87 – 30

(i) 22 – ( –87) = 22 + 87 = 109

(ii) 198 + ( –12) = 198 – 12 = 186

(iii) –16.87 – 30 = – (16.87 + 30) = – 46.87

(iv) – 19 + 34 – 34 = –19 + 0 = –19

Question 2: Find the additive inverse of the following:

Additive inverse of 23 is –23 such that;

23 + (–23) = 0 = (–23) + 23

Additive inverse of 108 is –108 such that;

108 + (–108) = 0 = (–108) + 108

Additive inverse of 476 is –476 such that;

476 + (–476) = 0 = (–476) + 476

Additive inverse of –39 is –(–39) = 39 such that;

–39 + 39 = 0 = 39 + (–39)

Question 3: Verify a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c for the following:

(i) a = 2, b = 0, c = –9

(ii) a = 34, b = 90, c = –1

L.H.S = a + (b + c) = 2 + (0 + 9)

= 2 + 9 = 11

R.H.S = (a + b) + c = (2 + 0) + 9

∴ L.H.S = R.H.S

L.H.S = a + (b + c) = 34 + {90 + (–1)}

34 + {90 – 1}

= 34 + 89 = 123

R.H.S = (a + b) + c = (34 + 90) + (–1)

= 124 + (–1)

= 124 – 1 = 123

= 193 + 208 + 338

= (193 + 208) + 338 {associativity}

= 401 + 338 = 739.

= 56 – 34 + 235 – 123

= (56 + 235) – (34 + 123) {commutativity and associativity}

= {84 + (–34)} × (84 + 45)

= 84 × (–34 + 45) {distributivity of multiplication over addition}

Question 5: Write ‘true’ or ‘false’ for the following:

(i) Zero is the smallest integer.

(ii) –10 is smaller than –7.

(iii) 1 is the smallest positive integer.

(iv) –1 is the smallest negative integer.

(v) Sum of two negative integers is a positive integer.

(i) Zero is the smallest integer. (False)

(ii) –10 is smaller than –7. (True)

Question 6: Evaluate:

(i) (–4) × (–15) × (–33)

(ii) (–1) × (–1) × (–1) × … 100 times

(iii) (–7) × (–4) × 5

= – (4 × 15 × 33)

= (– 1) 100

= 1 {∵ 100 is an even number}

= (7 × 4) × 5

Question 7: In a class test containing 20 questions, 5 marks are awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks is deducted for each wrong answer. If Riya get 15 correct answers out of all the questions attempted. What is her total score?

Number of questions = 20

Marks awarded for corrected answer = 5

Marks awarded for wrong answer = –2

Number questions attempted correctly = 15

Number questions not attempted correctly = 5

Her total score = (15 × 5) + (–2 × 5) = 75 – 10 = 65

Question 8: An elevator descends at the rate of 4 m/min. If the elevator start descending 25 m above the ground level, how long will it take to cover –450 m? ‘

Given, the elevator is at 25 m above the ground level and have to reach 450 m below the ground level.

Distance have to be covered = 25 – (–450) = 475 m

Speed of the elevator = 4 m/min

Time taken = 475/4 = 118.75 min.

Question 9: What number should be added to the sum of 345 and 67 to make it equal to the smallest 3-digit number?

Smallest 3-digit number = 100

Now, 345 + 67 = 412

412 – 100 = 312

Thus, 412 + (–312) = 100

Question 10: During summer, the temperature within a room is 37 o C. If an air conditioner cools the room by 5 o C/min. What will be the temperature of the room after 5 minutes of switching on the air conditioner?

Temperature of the room before switching on the air conditioner = 37 o C

Rate of cooling = –5 o c/min

Temperature of the room after switching on the air conditioner for 5 min = 37 – (5 × 5)

= 37 – 25 = 12 o C.

4. Write in descending order: \[\mathbf{21}\], \[\mathbf{501}\], \[\mathbf{2}\], \[\mathbf{16}\], \[\mathbf{81}\], \[\mathbf{363}\].

Ans: $21$, $-2$, $-16$, $-81$, $-363$, $-501$.

5. Find the value of the following:

(a)$-\left| -4 \right|$

(b)$\left| 7-4 \right|$

(c)$8-\left| 7 \right|$

Ans: (a)$-\left| -4 \right|=-4$

Ans: (a) Adding $-19$ and $36$,

$\begin{align} & -19 \\  & +\underline{36} \\  & \text{  17} \\  \end{align}$

Hence, the answer is $17$.

(b) Adding $-49$ and $27$,

$\begin{align} & -49 \\ & +\underline{27} \\  & -22 \\  \end{align}$

9. \[\left( -14+6 \right)\] ___$\left( -38-\left( -9 \right) \right)$ . Use >, <, =

Ans: Solving both sides, we get

1. Mark the following on the number line:

(b) $-7$, $-6$, $-5$, $-4$

3. Subtract the following:

(a) \[-\mathbf{842}\] from \[\mathbf{0}\]

(b) \[-\mathbf{2959}\] from \[\mathbf{8158}\]

Ans: (a) Subtracting $-842$ from $0$,

$\begin{align} & 0-\left( -842 \right) \\  & =0+842 \\  & =842 \\  \end{align}$

Hence, the answer is $842$.

(b) Subtracting $-2959$ from $8158$,

$\begin{align} & 8158-\left( -2959 \right) \\  & =8158+2959 \\  & =11117 \\ \end{align}$

Hence, the answer is $11,117$.

4. The sum of two integers is – 38. If one of them is 240. Find the other.

Ans: We know that, $\text{addend+addend=sum}$

From given,

$\begin{align} & 240+X=-38 \\  & X=-38-240 \\  & X=-278 \\  \end{align}$

Hence, the other number is $-278$.

5. Find the product of \[\left( -27 \right)\times 18\times 30\].

Ans: The product of \[\left( -27 \right)\times 18\times 30\] is

\[\begin{align} & \left( -27 \right)\times 30\times 18 \\  & =-810\times 18 \\  & =-14580 \\  \end{align}\]

Hence, the answer is \[-14,580\].

6. Simplify: $\left( -37 \right)\times \left( -16 \right)+\left( -37 \right)\times \left( -14 \right)$.

Ans: $\left( -37 \right)\times \left( -16 \right)+\left( -37 \right)\times \left( -14 \right)$…(1)

We know that by distributive property,

$a\times b+a\times c=a\times \left( b+c \right)$

Hence, by (1),

$a=-37$, $b=-16$, $c=-14$

$\begin{align} & \left( -37 \right)\left[ \left( -16 \right)+\left( -14 \right) \right] \\  & =\left( -37 \right)\left[ -30 \right] \\  & =-1110 \\ \end{align}$

The answer after simplification is $-1110$.

7. Divide \[\left( +\mathbf{3251} \right)\] by \[\left( -\mathbf{27} \right)\].

Ans: We know that, 

$\frac{\left( +3251 \right)}{\left( -27 \right)}=-\left( \frac{3251}{27} \right)$

By long division, we get,

Long division of 3251 by -27

Hence, we get,

$\begin{align} & \text{Quotient=-120} \\  & \text{Remainder=11} \\  \end{align}$

1. Using number line, write the following

(a) \[\mathbf{4}\] more than \[\mathbf{6}\]

(b) \[\mathbf{5}\] more than \[\mathbf{2}\]

(c) \[\mathbf{6}\] less than \[\mathbf{4}\]

(d) \[\mathbf{3}\] less than \[\mathbf{2}\]

Ans: (a) $4\text{ more than 6}=6+4=10$

2. A bus travelled 30km to south, then 40km to north and from 30km to west. How for did the bus travel?

Distance travelled North = \[40\]km

Distance travelled West = $-30$km

Hence, Total distance travelled 

\[\begin{array}{*{35}{l}} =\left( -30 \right)+40+\left( 30 \right)  \\ \begin{align} & =60+40 \\  & =-20 \\  \end{align}  \\ \end{array}\]

Thus, the total distance travelled is $20$km towards the south.

5 Marks Questions

1. In a class test containing \[\mathbf{25}\] questions, \[\mathbf{4}\] marks are given for every correct answer and \[\left( \mathbf{2} \right)\] marks are given for every wrong answer. A student attempts all questions and \[\mathbf{20}\] of his answers are correct. What is the total score of a student?

Ans: Total questions in test \[=25\]

Marks are given for 1 correct answer \[=4\]

Marks are given for 1 incorrect answer \[=2\]

Marks given for 20 correct answers \[=20\times 4=80\]

Total incorrect answers \[=\left( 2520 \right)=5\]

Marks given for incorrect answers \[=5\times \left( 2 \right)=10\]

Total score in test 

\[\begin{align} & =80+\left( 10 \right) \\  & =70 \\  \end{align}\]

Hence, the total score in the test is $70$ marks.

Integers is a set of all natural numbers, 0 and negatives of natural numbers are called integers, i.e., we can represent the integers on the number line. 

Integers range from { ………, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …….. }

The absolute value of an integer is the numerical value of the integer in any case regardless of its sign.

Successors and predecessor of an integer: Let abe an integer, then: 

(a + 1) is called the successor of a.

(a - 1) is called the predecessor of a.

Properties of addition of integers:

(i) Closure property of addition: The total of two integers is always an integer.

(ii) Commutative law of addition: a + b = b + a

(iii) Associative law of addition: the sum remains the same even if the grouping of addends change.

Properties of subtraction of integers: 

(i) If two integers a and b are given then (a - b) is also an integer.

(ii) If a is considered an integer, then a - 0 = a.

(iii) if a, b, c are integers and a>b, then (a - c)>(b - c)

Properties of multiplication of integers:

(i) Closure property: The result of two integers is always an integer after multiplication.

(ii) Commutative law: a x b = b x a.

(iii) Associative law: a x (b x c) = (a x b) x c.

(iv) Distributive law: a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c.

Properties of division of integers:

(i) If two integers are a and b, then a ÷ b is not necessarily an integer.

(ii) If a ≠ 0, then a ÷ a = 1 

(iii) a ÷ 1 = a.

(iv) If a is a non-zero integer, then 0 ÷ a = 0, but  a ÷ 0 is not meaningful.

(v) (a ÷ b) ÷ c ≠ a ÷ (b ÷ c) unless c = 1.

Representation of Integers on Number line: To represent integers on a number line, draw a line and mark some points at equal distances on it. Mark a point as 0 on it. Points to the right of 0 are positive integers and are marked as +1, +2, +3, etc. or simply 1, 2, 3, etc. Points to the left of are negative integers and are marked as -1, -2, -3, etc. 

Ordering of Integers: On the number line, integers are grouped in such a way that when we move to the right the numbers increase and when we move to the left, the numbers decrease.

We add the corresponding positive integers and retain the negative sign with the sum when adding two negative integers, Ex: Find the sum of -3 and -3. 

-3 + (-3) = - (3+ 3) = -6.

To add a positive integer and a negative integer, we ignore the signs and subtract integers with smaller numerical value from the integer with a larger numerical value and take the sign of the larger one. 

Ex: (a) Consider -6 and + 4

As 6 -4 = 2, therefore -6 + (+4) = -2

(b) Consider + 5 and -2

5 + (-2) = 5 - 2 = 3

Two integers whose sum is 0 are called additive inverse of each other. 

In order to subtract an integer from a given integer, we add an additive opposite of the integer to the given integer.

Ex: (a) Subtract 3 from -4

The additive inverse of 3 is -3

So, -4, -3 = -4 + (-3) = (4 + 3) = -7

(b) -2 from -4

The additive inverse of -3 is 3

So, -4 - (-2) = -4 + 2 = -2

Addition/ Subtraction of Integers on Number line: Firstly draw the number line and represent the first number on it. Then to add/ subtract the second number in first, we move left/ right to the first number according to the second integer (either -ve or +ve)
