IELTS Cause and Effect Essay

These essays often create confusion for IELTS test takers. Why? Because very often test takers confuse these with problem and solution essays, and this costs them band scores in Task Achievement.

In these essays, you need to write about the causes of these problems and the effects they have, NOT the problems and their solutions .

Sample Cause and Effect Essay topic

Today more people are overweight than ever before.

What are the primary causes of this?

What are the main effects of this epidemic?

The planning stage

Before you begin your IELTS writing task 2 , make sure you understand the essay topic. Clearly, it is about obesity, but if you write an essay with suggestions on what measures could be taken to help people achieve a healthy weight, this will give you a lower band score.

Look at the first question:

Here, you must come up with ideas for why people are more overweight nowadays. What do you think are the causes of these problems? Why is it so difficult to maintain a healthy weight nowadays? What changes in our society have made people heavier than they were 30, 40 or 50 years ago? Two ideas are enough.

  • less time to exercise and prepare healthy food
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food

Look at the second question:

What problems does obesity cause? Who is affected and how? Again, come up with 2 ideas.

  • higher mortality rates and illness
  • strain on the economy

Remember that for each idea, you need support. Support can be evidence, like statistics that prove your idea, or further explanation about why or how your idea is true.

  • less time to exercise and prepare food/ sedentary lifestyle-> Harvard University study shows that people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food -> provides a low-cost, easy solution to meal preparation but poor quality and high in fat
  • higher mortality rates and illness-> Being an unhealthy weight is associated with higher levels of strokes, heart disease and diabetes, which can lead to death
  • strain on the economy -> illness leads to lost productivity in the workplace and higher health care costs

The writing stage

With brainstorming completed, you can begin writing the introduction to your IELTS cause and effect essay. 2-4 sentences are enough.

  • Introduce the topic
  • Mention that there are several causes of obesity
  • Say that the problem creates serious effects on individuals and society

Do you have to say what the causes and effects are in the introduction? Not necessarily. If you can briefly mention them by name, then you can, but if doing so requires a lengthy explanation, bypass this and go straight to writing your body paragraphs.

Do not spend too much time on your introduction. The introduction of an IELTS essay needs to be concise and contain the required information but a better band score will be achieved by spending time developing your body, not the introduction.

Band 9 sample introduction

In countries around the world, the rates of obesity are skyrocketing nowadays. This is a situation that has multiple causes, creating effects that can be felt not only by the individual but by society as a whole. This essay will address the causes and effects of increased obesity, using statistics from Harvard University to provide evidence and support.

Body paragraph one - causes

Tips for structure.

In addition to solid ideas and support, a well-written paragraph also needs a clear topic sentence to introduce the central idea. You may also end with a statement of conclusion, which essentially is a rephrasing of your topic sentence.

Band 9 sample body paragraph one

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life. One such change is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, brought on in part by more work. For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago. As a result, people are sitting more and have even less time to focus on their health and fitness than they did in the past. Our increased work hours have created another problem related to our diet. With fewer hours at home, more and more people are turning to fast food and other unhealthy alternatives for their meals, which have become widely available and inexpensive, instead of cooking healthy food. The result of these issues is a society with epidemic levels of obesity.

Body paragraph 2 - effects

Many students struggle with how to create a solid link between the two body paragraphs. In an IELTS cause and effect essay, the topic sentence simply needs to introduce that the problem has a variety of effects. There can be a reference to the cause, if appropriate.

Band 9 sample body paragraph two

This rise in obesity has far-reaching effects, both on an individual and a societal level. For the individual, being overweight has been linked with higher mortality rates and illness. More specifically, people suffering from an unhealthy weight are known to have higher incidences of strokes, heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, obese people on average have a lower life expectancy than their normal weight counterparts. For society, with more citizens reaching obesity levels, a strain on our economy is created. Increased illness means that employees are taking more sick leave, resulting in a loss of productivity. Furthermore, additional healthcare is needed to treat obesity-related illness, adding costs that affect the patient, the employer and the healthcare system. Therefore, it is clear that obesity is a health crisis that reduces quality of life and poses problems for the economy, and in turn, society.

Writing the conclusion

Again, aim for brevity. It is possible to create a solid conclusion to your IELTS essay in two to three sentences.

A well-written conclusion needs to rephrase the topic again, mentioning that obesity is a problem with a number of factors and effects that are felt throughout society.

The last sentence should leave a thought-provoking statement for the examiner. This could be a prediction for the future or a statement highlighting the seriousness of the problem.

Band 9 sample conclusion

In conclusion, our sedentary lifestyle, extended work hours and consumption of unhealthy food has led countries around the world to high levels of obesity. The result of this trend affects all levels of society. It is imperative that measures are taken to solve this epidemic before it is too late.

Grammar - tenses

Band 9 essays need to show a wide range of grammar. One way to do this is to use a variety of tenses appropriately and accurately. In each of the paragraphs no fewer than 3 tenses were used.

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life.

For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago.

Lexical Resources

Some topic-specific vocabulary will earn you higher marks in the lexical resources criterion.

  • sedentary lifestyle
  • epidemic levels
  • on a societal level
  • mortality rates
  • higher incidences of strokes
  • loss of productivity
  • health crisis
  • poses problems

Cause and effect essays are some of the easier tasks to write because you do not need to have a position and support it. They require a little knowledge of the topic, but remember, IELTS is a language test, not a knowledge test, so feel free to draw from personal experience.

Practice writing these types of essays but more importantly, get feedback for your writing. The team at IELTSPODCAST.COM is available to correct your essays and give you expert guidance quickly and affordably.

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

This essay was written on a topic from “Target Band 7” book (page 54, reprinted with permission).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task

Obesity was once considered a disease of adults; however, it is becoming increasingly common among children. Why do you think this is happening? What can be done to help children stay healthy?

Write at least 250 words

ielts essay about obesity

For many years obesity was perceived as a condition occurring only in adult life. However, in recent years the number of children suffering from obesity has grown significantly. There are several causes and numerous solutions which can be used to tackle this worrying phenomenon, and this essay will present a couple of them.

While some reasons for childhood obesity are genetic, others include poor food choices exacerbated by easy availability of fast food, insufficient physical activity and a history of family members being overweight. Unlike the former, the latter factors can be changed, if the adults in the child’s life gain awareness and are willing to take action.

To begin with, health is a complex matter which requires a balanced approach. In other words, there isn’t a single solution to maintain health, on the contrary, it is rather a mixture of multiple factors, such as and regular physical activity. For this reason, increasing the awareness of healthy habits among children is a responsibility of utmost importance. What is more, it can be easily achieved through the education system.

On the other hand, children’s education might to stop the situation from worsening. Along with well designed health education schemes, we should also try to stop food companies from overusing sugar in products the young ones. It has been proven that more than 70% of the products available in an average supermarket contain dangerously high levels of white sugar. Sugar rich diet not only causes a significant weight gain, but also contributes to diseases, such as diabetes in young population.

To summarize, emphasis put on the awareness of healthy living among children is invaluable. Furthermore, combining healthy habits with stopping food companies from in products which are easily children can be effectively implemented by the governments. Positive outcomes of such measures taken today will definitely have a long lasting effect on the future generations.

This is a well developed response to the question. Relevant key points are included in the answer. Appropriate examples are also used to corroborate the writer’s point of view. Paragraphing is skillfully managed, information and ideas are logically sequenced. A wide range of vocabulary is used to allow certain flexibility and precision. Also, a variety of sentence structures is used. Accuracy of expression needs some attention (see corrections underlined in blue). Overall, the essay could achieve Band 8 in IELTS.

The causes and effects of obesity IELTS essay   should be written with a lot of care and caution. There are multiple ways that you can approach your essay and structure it to earn brownie points. The usual structure is the following:

Introduction - Paragraph 1 (Causes) - Paragraph 2 (Effects) – Conclusion.

You should allocate around 40 minutes for this essay while keeping the minimum word count at 250 words, although there is no recommended upper limit.

Table of Contents

Popular study abroad destinations, causes and effects of obesity ielts essay samples.

In recent times, the count of obese or overweight individuals is continually on the rise. This essay will talk about the key reasons behind such an epidemic of obesity while then talking about the possible effects of the issue.

The biggest causes or reasons behind mushrooming obesity include lack of physical activity and poor eating habits such as eating at the wrong time or switching to junk food over healthy food. More and more individuals now rely on cars or bikes for commuting instead of walking or taking public transportation while also executing work of a less physically demanding nature. In most cases, they also choose leisure and recreational activities that are not high on the physical activity quotient. These factors lead to lesser calories being burned and rampant weight gain. The problem is further worsened by the growing tendency to consume unhealthy meals and fast food, high in calories and other harmful elements. For instance, reports state how 50% of the European adult population suffers from obesity chiefly due to eating disorders and lack of a balanced dietary regime.

Possible effects of this issue include mental and physical ailments and productivity losses. Firstly, obesity leads to improper functioning of our bodies and higher propensities for chronic disorders. For instance, with a rise in overall body fat percentages, people's metabolisms get impacted, leading to ailments such as heart diseases or even diabetes in some cases. Secondly, obese or overweight individuals are more likely to be unhealthy and give in to tiredness or stress alike. This further reduces their overall working productivity and abilities. For instance, studies often show that overweight individuals need to work harder to finish several tasks compared to their peers with balanced or normal weight levels.

To conclude, obesity is a major issue that has impacted a large chunk of society recently. It is chiefly caused by sedentary lifestyles and lack of a balanced diet, and various other factors. It leads to chronic and severe issues while also leading to productivity losses. (332 words)

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Obesity may be technically defined as a health condition where an individual accumulates excessive fat in the body, negatively affecting their health levels. The growing obesity rate is majorly caused due to several lifestyle factors across developed and developing countries alike. This article will discuss the societal impact of an increasing number of overweight or obese citizens in detail.

The first and foremost reason behind the increasing rate of obesity can be unhealthy dietary changes daily and a fast-paced lifestyle that promotes junk food for its taste and the reason it gets instantly ready. A growing number of citizens end up opting for unhealthy food items with higher sugar content, and many consume fried and junk food regularly. The inclination of people towards junk food has been further accentuated by the proliferation of popular brands selling unhealthy fast food. Though this daily lifestyle may still be okay for the underweight, it will lead to a severe increase in fat levels for regular individuals. They ultimately become overweight or obese within a few years of following such unhealthy lifestyles.

Societies with growing obesity rates may also witness a concurrent lack of physical activity and exercise in these people. Higher pressures of professional and social commitments while neglecting physical education and sports at educational institutions are reasons behind the lack of exercise amongst all age groups.

Some may argue that with prospective health ailments and risks turning graver in recent times, it may be a good idea to remain overweight or obese if it has a positive impact on the immune system, without sudden or fluctuating changes in body weight. Yet, studies in several nations have clearly indicated how obesity leads to severe issues linked to sleeping patterns, heart ailments, focus, and diabetes, along with many other problems. If not fixed at the outset, overweight or obese individuals may ultimately face critical health scenarios that may eventually pose risks to their lives.

While the evidence does not exist suitably about overweight citizens contributing more towards the socio-economic growth or higher productivity of nations, the simple rule of thumb is that they require higher food than regular individuals. As can be seen, this directly accentuates the rising burden on global food and agricultural production.

To conclude, a higher obesity rate is mainly due to higher consumption of unhealthy food and lack of physical exercise due to several prevalent factors today. Obesity is thus a harbinger of serious health risks and issues that will only impact people negatively. (420 words)

Essay 208 – Obesity is now a major global epidemic

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 208.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Obesity is now a major global epidemic. What can be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Nowadays, the obesity issue and health complications due to this have reached an epic proportion around the world. The governments, however, should adopt effective steps, like introducing a higher tax on junk foods and banning television commercials for nutrient-poor foods to curb the global burden of obesity.

To commence with, governments should levy a tax on sugary drinks and fast food as the excessive consumption of sugar and fat is a key contributor to obesity. In the present food environment, sugary drinks are a vital source of sugar in the diet, and fast food is highly popular among the young generation. Their intake is increasing dramatically in most nations, particularly amongst children and adolescents. This is why taxation on sugary drinks and fast food can prove to be an effective intervention to cut down their consumptions. For instance, a recent study shows that putting a tax on sugary drinks that raises prices by 20% can cause a decrease in consumption of around 20%, therefore preventing obesity to some extent.

Apart from putting taxes on sugary drinks and junk foods, restrictions of their advertisement is another silver bullet for controlling the epidemic of obesity. The rationale behind banning television and digital commercials for unhealthy foods and drinks is that exposure to food advertisement augments the intake of fast food and sugary beverages, thus contributing to high rates of obesity. Because many people, particularly children, are unable to discern the persuasive intent of advertising, they remain blissfully unaware of the negative health consequences of eating unhealthy junk foods and drinks. This, in turn, leads to growing consumption of nutrition poor food and eventually putting people at higher risk for obesity and other health-related problems.

In conclusion, controlling obesity has become one of the world’s urgent public health priorities. Therefore, the governments should plan on introducing effective measures so as to curb obesity – including a ban on advertising unhealthy foods and a levy on foods and beverages that are high in saturated fat, sugar or salt.

Obesity Essays

ielts essay about obesity

Overweight Children Essay

Parents of obese children should be punished for making their children overweight. Do you agree or disagree? It is argued that obese children’s parents should be held responsible and punished for making their children fat. They should be considerate about their children’s health. This essay agrees with this opinion because parents should take care of their children’s diet and should make them health cautious. Parents have the power to take control of their children’s diet and make them eat healthy food. This will fulfill their children’s body needs which will help in their growth. Eating junk food is bad for health and will make children fat when consumed excessively. Fast foods, for instance, burgers and pizzas will cause obesity over long-term consumption. Hence, parents should make a proper diet plan and make their children follow it. Parents, not only, should worry about their children’s health but should also make their children take care of themselves. Parents should make their children aware of the consequences of bad eating habits. They, for example, can show them what will happen to them like obesity if they consume junk food over a long period of time. This will make their children’s health cautious. In conclusion, I would say that parents should give priority to their children and their health over all other things. They can give their children a healthy life by making their children eat good and nutritious food and stay away from junk food. Otherwise, not only obesity but blood pressure and many other diseases will damage their children’s life. Hence, they should be held accountable for their children’s health and fitness.

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Essay topic

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Band 8 essay sample

It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.

One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.

In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.

It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.

To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.

Band 7 Sample Answer

In earlier days, obesity was considered to be an adult disease. However, in recent times, factors like changes in lifestyle and food habits have made this health issue typical among children. This essay will further explain the causes and solutions of this trend, as per my opinion.

One key cause of childhood obesity is the inactive lifestyle prevalent in the modern era. With the increased use of electronic devices, children spend longer on screen-based activities, reducing their physical activity levels. Additionally, the availability of high-calorie, processed foods has increased, contributing to unhealthy eating habits. Both these causes can be solved with proper guidance. Guardians and the government should make it compulsory to include physical activities, like outdoor activities, in daily routines, and the screen time should be limited. Moreover, children should be given home-cooked food except for special occasions.

In my opinion, an all-rounding approach is important to fight this rapidly growing health crisis. Firstly, educational initiatives encouraging healthy lifestyle choices should be integrated into the school curriculum. For example, programs like Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) and School Health Component of Ayushman Bharat, initiated by the Indian government, aim to educate children about regular exercise and a balanced diet. In addition, children should be encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities that will restrict their involvement with computer games and television.

In conclusion, childhood obesity is caused due to lifestyle and diet differences. By implementing thorough education and directions from elders, society can work towards controlling this trend and enabling a healthier future for the younger generation. (255 words)

Band 8 Sample Answer

The occurrence of obesity, which was considered a health crisis for adults in the past, has become a prevalent health crisis in children. From my standpoint, this shift is due to various factors like food choices and lack of activity. Therefore, the following paragraphs will discuss these causes, enabling us to develop solutions to prevent childhood obesity.

First and foremost, the consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, often rich in sugars and fats, like processed foods, sugary beverages like Coke, and fast food, plays a significant role in childhood obesity. Furthermore, reductions in physical education programs in schools, either due to budget constraints or curriculum changes, limit opportunities for children to engage in regular physical activity. The lack of physical activity to maintain a healthy body and mind is further threatened by limited access to parks, sidewalks, and recreational facilities, which prevent children from engaging in active play. Consequently, the active participation of parents and the government can handle these factors by preventing the advertising of unhealthy food choices and motivating children to take part in outdoor activities.

In my view, the first step to controlling obesity and its related diseases is to reduce the consumption of fast foods and provide only home-cooked meals. Moreover, governments should stop cutting down on the number of playgrounds and parks. It will allow children to participate in active outdoor sports and maintain a healthy lifestyle instead of playing video games. Above all, children should be conscious of their food choices and the effects of an unenergetic lifestyle through initiatives like calorie labeling of products in the U.K. and publishing papers like “Tackling obesity: empowering adults and children to live healthier lives”.

In the end, it can be concluded that addressing childhood obesity requires a comprehensive approach that includes changes in dietary patterns, increased physical activity and education on nutrition to create environments favorable to healthy living.

Band 9 Sample Answer

Childhood obesity has become a serious health issue in the modern world, extending beyond the conventional definition of adult diseases. This alarming trend can be attributed to several interrelated factors that demand urgent attention. I shall expand on these factors and their solutions in the upcoming paragraphs and present my view.

To begin with, modern technology has led to declining physical activity among children. As a result, a surge in screen time and insufficient physical activity has led to weight gain and obesity. For instance, a recent study by the World Health Organization revealed that children spending more than two hours daily on electronic devices were twice as likely to be overweight compared to their more active counterparts. Simultaneously, lack of a balanced diet resulting in less-than-ideal food choices, coupled with the child’s genetic makeup, may play a role in their tendency to obesity. However, genetic factors alone do not explain the significant increase in childhood obesity, suggesting that lifestyle factors play a crucial role. Accordingly, governments, parents and the community should hinder the above trends to curb the increase in childhood obesity.

As far as I am concerned, parents play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s dietary habits and lifestyle. So, they should provide nutritious food in a presentable way so that children are not attracted to fast food. Next, educational campaigns, “Eat right”, must be reinforced in schools and communities, emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise. Lastly, governmental bodies, like the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, should implement policies regulating children’s food advertising and promoting affordable, wholesome options.

On the whole, childhood obesity is a complicated problem with bad eating habits and passive lives at its core. Future generations’ health can be protected, and society can halt this worrying trend by combining community-based, legislative, and educational measures.

  • Counterparts (Noun)
