The extended essay in business management requires you to demonstrate your ability to analyze commercial activities at different economy levels.

A business management extended essay requires you to choose a topic, develop a research question, conduct in-depth research, and write a critically analyzed argument with credible data and evidence.

Research Question

An extended essay research question is important because the entire business management report hinges on it.

A good RQ for this report should align with the scope, concepts and techniques, research materials, usefulness and application, and engagement in the subject.

1. Focus on the Scope of the Topic

Scope refers to the breadth of the topic you choose.

Don’t select a topic that lacks sufficient materials to cover the 4,000 words limit. Instead, select a highly specific business management EE topic , one for which you can find sufficient information to write a more comprehensive report.

Then come up with a research question that aligns with it.

2. Apply Business Concepts and Techniques

Develop a research question for which you can apply business analysis methods, terminologies, and techniques you’ve learned in the classroom.

Ensure the question has a tight link to the syllabus while allowing you to draw direct link to theoretical concepts taught in the business management course.

Your task here isn’t to show off your knowledge. Your teacher expects you to prove you understand and can apply what you’ve learned. 

3. Ensure Availability of Research Materials

Ignore a research question that lacks depth of materials and knowledge base to warrant a 4,000-word treatment.

If you can’t access highly relevant records or useful research data for the question, look for a different one.

4. Make Your RQ Useful and Applicable

Ensure your RQ, or issue, is relevant and applicable to the current business environment.

You must draw your inspiration only from journals and newspapers that give you current ideas.

5. Make Your Research Question Engaging

Don’t develop a research issue based only on the merit of ease and personal interest.

Focus on something you’ve actually investigated or have always wanted to research. By doing so, you’ll have an easy time fulfilling the engagement part of the grading criteria.

IB Business Management Extended Essay Structure

The structure of a business management extended essay features a title page, table of contents, introduction, methodology, body, conclusion, and bibliography.

The title page doesn’t contribute to the overall world count of the EE. However, the title page is an import part of the structure because it includes the following significant information:

• Title: It should not be a question but a clear, summarized statement of the research question.
• Research Question: Write the RQ in this part.
• Subject: The subject should be “Business Management”.
• Word Count: Indicate the number of words in your essay.

Don’t write your name, candidate name, date, or school name on the title page, as they’re no longer part of the new structure.

Table of Content

Table of contents is also not part of the word count, but it’s an essential part of the assignment. Include all the parts of your business management EE in this section with their respective page numbers.

Introduction (About 250 Words)

Your introduction should provide a clear context for your research question.

• Describe why your research is interesting, as well as why it’s important to your audience.
• Ensure your audience understands what you’ll be exploring, how you intend to explore your research question, and how valuable your research is to them.

Methodology (About 350 Words)

Divide the methodology in two parts, one for the source and one the other one for the tools. Also, ensure you mention the limitations and drawbacks of these sources and tools.

• Sources: State and explain the primary and secondary sources of your research. The sources can include news articles, company annual reports, magazine articles, and encyclopedia. Include the benefits and drawback of each source, keeping in mind that a majority of your research should come from secondary sources.
• Tools: State the tools you’ll use for analysis, discussion, and evaluation. Explain why you’re going to use these tools and how relevant they’re to your business management assignment. Mention any changes to your toolset should there be any, along with an explanation on why such changes were necessary.

Main Body (About 2800 Words)

The main body of the business management extended essay is at most 2,800 words long. It’s in this section that you share your research, analysis, discussion, and evaluation.

Divide the main body into two sections, one for the tools and the other for your research:

• Tools: Show your teacher you know how to do what you’ve learned in a business management class.
• Research: Make an impression with your research, even if it goes beyond what you’ve learned in the classroom.

Each paragraph should relate to the research question. Therefore, the analysis, discussion, and evaluation have to include relevant tools and research.

The conclusion ties everything together to show what you’ve done to answer your research question. Mention the limitation of your research and explain any other unresolved question.

However, the conclusion of your EE shouldn’t introduce new ideas (ideas you haven’t addressed in the body parts of the essay. 

Bibliography

Aim for 3 or 4 pages of sources for the bibliography. However, keep in mind that the bibliography isn’t part of your word count.

Business Management EE Rubric

IB evaluates business management extended essays based on the following 5 criteria:

• Focus and method 
• Knowledge and understanding
• Critical thinking
• Presentation

The grades range from A to E, with the top grade having a maximum of 34 points and anything worse than a C being a fail.

While the professional judgment of selected instructors can affect your grades, these descriptors used to determine the actual grade that you get in the end.

Criterion A: Focus and Method 

Criterion A examines how unique, focused, intelligent, and analytical you’re when using techniques learned in the course and outside the classroom.

Evaluators expect you to demonstrate your scholastic ability to apply theories in practical situations, come up with answers to you research issue, and offer a possible solution to the problem at hand.

To score a 6 for focus and method:

• Develop a clear, focused research question.
• Use secondary sources for topic research.
• Support your arguments with relevant, recent, and credible evidence or data.
• Develop a well-organized, logical methodology leading up to your conclusions. 

Criteria B: Knowledge and Understanding

Knowledge and understanding focuses on not only how much you’ve learned in the course but also how well you can apply the concepts taught in class to the real world.

To show a business-oriented thinking, use business terminologies.

You can use abstract concepts in the paper, but you should also add thorough explanation your process using a simple language that readers can understand.

Diagrams and charts can help explain concepts that would be hard to explain in words, but it’s important to explain each so that your ideas are clear.

As you explain business trends linked to your research topic, ensure your ideas follow an analytical process while remaining grounded in the case you’re exploring.

Criteria C: Critical Thinking

To score high on this criterion, show a unique application of business concepts, technique, theories, and methods to analyze the problem under investigation.

• Back your argument with in-depth, credible research.
• Be self-critical, making sure you evaluate the accuracy and reliability of your sources.
• Comment on the gaps or weaknesses your arguments don’t solve and suggest what you think researchers can do to solve these issues.
• Use the analytical techniques learned in the course to follow up every point you make in your business management extended essay.

Criterion D: Presentation

The presentation criterion looks at how well you organize and communicate your ideas. The common academic standards evaluated include:

• A clear and easy to understand language
• Clearly labeled charts, graphs, figures, and images
• A well-structured essay with headings and subheadings

Criterion E: Engagement

Criterion E evaluates how you engage with the research topic based on the subject’s intersection in your life.

Avoid using a third-person perspective because doing so will earn you few points.

Quite instances of personal interactions instead, and show that the research question you choose is relevant to you and others.

Extended Essay Grade Descriptors

The following are the grade descriptors used for IB Business Management Extended Essay:

Descriptor A

To get an A, you must have a clear research question, conduct relevant research, and demonstrate expert knowledge and understanding of the materials taught in the classroom.

Also, show a comprehensive engagement to and explanation of the problem.

Your extended essay in business management should feature a logical, structural layout, include key reflections, and have relevant, accurate conclusions.

Descriptor B

To score a B, you need to demonstrate good knowledge of research, appropriate research skill, and a reasonable application of the business concepts and techniques learned in the classroom.

Also, offer a synthesis of an effective research question, a satisfactory presentation, and conclusion supported by evidence presented in the IB business management extended essay.

Descriptor C

Students who score a C for their extended essay in business management are those who display some knowledge and understanding of the key concepts involved, including reasonable application of the topic.

However, the essay fails to synthesize the research question, it offers descriptive instead of an evaluative discussion, there are errors in the arguments use, and structure used is poor.

Descriptor D

Business management extended essays that score a D reflect poor research that lead to a general focus.

Although the essay shows some relevant knowledge of the topic, the content is full of discrepancies and inaccuracies.

In addition to the lack of a logical structure and coherent readability, the essay lacks a critical evaluation of the topic and the conclusions are inconsistent.

Descriptor E

An E is the grade awarded to an unclear essay with an unsystematic approach. The essay lacks a clear focus because it portrays limited knowledge of key concept, not to mention it has an inconsistent analysis and an inaccurate conclusion.

Tips to Write a Compelling IB Business Management Extended Essay

1.  Choose Your Research Question

The research question for your IB Business Management Extended essay should not be practical or actionable.

This is applicable only in the Internal Assessment.

Also, make your research question focused, not too broad and not to narrow. While you should be asking relatively simple questions, make sure they aren’t too obvious.

2.  Formatting Your Work

Your IB teacher will also look into how you format your work. So it’s important to make sure you get this right from the start.

Use the Times New Roman font type and 12-point font size. Double space your work and make sure every page has a number.

IB students around the globe fear writing the Extended Essay, but it doesn't have to be a source of stress! In this article, I'll get you excited about writing your Extended Essay and provide you with the resources you need to get an A on it.

If you're reading this article, I'm going to assume you're an IB student getting ready to write your Extended Essay. IB Extended Essay: Why Should You Trust My Advice?

I myself am a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to receive an A on my IB Extended Essay. Don't believe me? The proof is in the IBO pudding:

If you're confused by what this report means, EE is short for Extended Essay , and English A1 is the subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In layman's terms, my IB Diploma was graded in May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received an A grade on it.

What Is the Extended Essay in the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Extended Essay, or EE , is a mini-thesis you write under the supervision of an IB advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts toward your IB Diploma (learn more about the major IB Diploma requirements in our guide) . I will explain exactly how the EE affects your Diploma later in this article.

For the Extended Essay, you will choose a research question as a topic, conduct the research independently, then write an essay on your findings . The essay itself is a long one—although there's a cap of 4,000 words, most successful essays get very close to this limit.

Keep in mind that the IB requires this essay to be a "formal piece of academic writing," meaning you'll have to do outside research and cite additional sources.

The IB Extended Essay must include the following:

• A title page
• Contents page
• Introduction
• Body of the essay
• References and bibliography

Additionally, your research topic must fall into one of the six approved DP categories , or IB subject groups, which are as follows:

• Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
• Group 2: Language Acquisition
• Group 3: Individuals and Societies
• Group 4: Sciences
• Group 5: Mathematics
• Group 6: The Arts

Once you figure out your category and have identified a potential research topic, it's time to pick your advisor, who is normally an IB teacher at your school (though you can also find one online ). This person will help direct your research, and they'll conduct the reflection sessions you'll have to do as part of your Extended Essay.

As of 2018, the IB requires a "reflection process" as part of your EE supervision process. To fulfill this requirement, you have to meet at least three times with your supervisor in what the IB calls "reflection sessions." These meetings are not only mandatory but are also part of the formal assessment of the EE and your research methods.

According to the IB, the purpose of these meetings is to "provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their engagement with the research process." Basically, these meetings give your supervisor the opportunity to offer feedback, push you to think differently, and encourage you to evaluate your research process.

The final reflection session is called the viva voce, and it's a short 10- to 15-minute interview between you and your advisor. This happens at the very end of the EE process, and it's designed to help your advisor write their report, which factors into your EE grade.

What Should You Write About in Your IB Extended Essay?

You can technically write about anything, so long as it falls within one of the approved categories listed above.

It's best to choose a topic that matches one of the IB courses , (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.), which shouldn't be difficult because there are so many class subjects.

You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic . So how do you pick when the options are limitless?

How to Write a Stellar IB Extended Essay: 6 Essential Tips

Below are six key tips to keep in mind as you work on your Extended Essay for the IB DP. Follow these and you're sure to get an A!

#1: Write About Something You Enjoy

You can't expect to write a compelling essay if you're not a fan of the topic on which you're writing. For example, I just love British theatre and ended up writing my Extended Essay on a revolution in post-WWII British theatre. (Yes, I'm definitely a #TheatreNerd.)

I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the Extended Essay seriously. I was fortunate enough to receive a full-tuition merit scholarship to USC's School of Dramatic Arts program. In my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay; thus, I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship.

But how do you find a topic you're passionate about? Start by thinking about which classes you enjoy the most and why . Do you like math classes because you like to solve problems? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze literary texts?

Keep in mind that there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your Extended Essay topic. You're not more likely to get high marks because you're writing about science, just like you're not doomed to failure because you've chosen to tackle the social sciences. The quality of what you produce—not the field you choose to research within—will determine your grade.

Once you've figured out your category, you should brainstorm more specific topics by putting pen to paper . What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending a few hours on this type of brainstorming.

One last note: if you're truly stumped on what to research, pick a topic that will help you in your future major or career . That way you can use your Extended Essay as a talking point in your college essays (and it will prepare you for your studies to come too!).

#2: Select a Topic That Is Neither Too Broad nor Too Narrow

There's a fine line between broad and narrow. You need to write about something specific, but not so specific that you can't write 4,000 words on it.

You can't write about WWII because that would be a book's worth of material. You also don't want to write about what type of soup prisoners of war received behind enemy lines, because you probably won’t be able to come up with 4,000 words of material about it. However, you could possibly write about how the conditions in German POW camps—and the rations provided—were directly affected by the Nazis' successes and failures on the front, including the use of captured factories and prison labor in Eastern Europe to increase production. WWII military history might be a little overdone, but you get my point.

If you're really stuck trying to pinpoint a not-too-broad-or-too-narrow topic, I suggest trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. Once you begin looking through the list of sample essays below, you'll notice that many use comparisons to formulate their main arguments.

I also used a comparison in my EE, contrasting Harold Pinter's Party Time with John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in order to show a transition in British theatre. Topics with comparisons of two to three plays, books, and so on tend to be the sweet spot. You can analyze each item and then compare them with one another after doing some in-depth analysis of each individually. The ways these items compare and contrast will end up forming the thesis of your essay!

When choosing a comparative topic, the key is that the comparison should be significant. I compared two plays to illustrate the transition in British theatre, but you could compare the ways different regional dialects affect people's job prospects or how different temperatures may or may not affect the mating patterns of lightning bugs. The point here is that comparisons not only help you limit your topic, but they also help you build your argument.

Comparisons are not the only way to get a grade-A EE, though. If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison-based topic and are still unsure whether your topic is too broad or narrow, spend about 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is out there.

If there are more than 1,000 books, articles, or documentaries out there on that exact topic, it may be too broad. But if there are only two books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. If you're still unsure, ask your advisor—it's what they're there for! Speaking of advisors...

Don't get stuck with a narrow topic!

#3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Familiar With Your Topic

If you're not certain of who you would like to be your advisor, create a list of your top three choices. Next, write down the pros and cons of each possibility (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!).

For example, Mr. Green is my favorite teacher and we get along really well, but he teaches English. For my EE, I want to conduct an experiment that compares the efficiency of American electric cars with foreign electric cars.

I had Ms. White a year ago. She teaches physics and enjoyed having me in her class. Unlike Mr. Green, Ms. White could help me design my experiment.

Based on my topic and what I need from my advisor, Ms. White would be a better fit for me than would Mr. Green (even though I like him a lot).

The moral of my story is this: do not just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor . They might be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. For example, I would not recommend asking your biology teacher to guide you in writing an English literature-based EE.

There can, of course, be exceptions to this rule. If you have a teacher who's passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my theatre topic), you could ask that instructor. Consider all your options before you do this. There was no theatre teacher at my high school, so I couldn't find a theatre-specific advisor, but I chose the next best thing.

Before you approach a teacher to serve as your advisor, check with your high school to see what requirements they have for this process. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an Agreement Form , for instance.

Make sure that you ask your IB coordinator whether there is any required paperwork to fill out. If your school needs a specific form signed, bring it with you when you ask your teacher to be your EE advisor.

#4: Pick an Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best

Some teachers might just take on students because they have to and aren't very passionate about reading drafts, only giving you minimal feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the time to read several drafts of your essay and give you extensive notes. I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make my Extended Essay draft better.

Ask a teacher that you have experience with through class or an extracurricular activity. Do not ask a teacher that you have absolutely no connection to. If a teacher already knows you, that means they already know your strengths and weaknesses, so they know what to look for, where you need to improve, and how to encourage your best work.

Also, don't forget that your supervisor's assessment is part of your overall EE score . If you're meeting with someone who pushes you to do better—and you actually take their advice—they'll have more impressive things to say about you than a supervisor who doesn't know you well and isn't heavily involved in your research process.

Be aware that the IB only allows advisors to make suggestions and give constructive criticism. Your teacher cannot actually help you write your EE. The IB recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in total with the candidate discussing the EE.

#5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow

The IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be one to two double-spaced pages), research question/focus (i.e., what you're investigating), a body, and a conclusion (about one double-spaced page). An essay with unclear organization will be graded poorly.

The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about eight to 18 pages long (again, depending on your topic). Your body can be split into multiple parts. For example, if you were doing a comparison, you might have one third of your body as Novel A Analysis, another third as Novel B Analysis, and the final third as your comparison of Novels A and B.

If you're conducting an experiment or analyzing data, such as in this EE , your EE body should have a clear structure that aligns with the scientific method ; you should state the research question, discuss your method, present the data, analyze the data, explain any uncertainties, and draw a conclusion and/or evaluate the success of the experiment.

#6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later!

You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in just a week and get an A on it. You'll be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books and plays as well!). As such, it's imperative that you start your research as soon as possible.

Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your senior year; others will take them as late as February. Your school will tell you what your deadline is. If they haven't mentioned it by February of your junior year, ask your IB coordinator about it.

Some high schools will provide you with a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to meet with your advisor, and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do this. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure whether you are on a specific timeline.

Below is my recommended EE timeline. While it's earlier than most schools, it'll save you a ton of heartache (trust me, I remember how hard this process was!):

• January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least your top three options).
• February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor. If they decline, keep asking others until you find one. See my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor.
• April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least seven to 10) to your EE advisor. Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline.
• Summer Between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between your junior and senior year. I know, I know—no one wants to work during the summer, but trust me—this will save you so much stress come fall when you are busy with college applications and other internal assessments for your IB classes. You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely won't be able to get everything you want to say into 4,000 articulate words on the first attempt. Try to get this first draft into the best possible shape so you don't have to work on too many revisions during the school year on top of your homework, college applications, and extracurriculars.
• August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of your EE to your advisor and receive feedback. Work on incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft.
• September/October of Senior Year: Submit the second draft of your EE to your advisor (if necessary) and look at their feedback. Work on creating the best possible final draft.
• November-February of Senior Year: Schedule your viva voce. Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to the IB. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate.

Remember that in the middle of these milestones, you'll need to schedule two other reflection sessions with your advisor . (Your teachers will actually take notes on these sessions on a form like this one , which then gets submitted to the IB.)

I recommend doing them when you get feedback on your drafts, but these meetings will ultimately be up to your supervisor. Just don't forget to do them!

How Is the IB Extended Essay Graded?

Extended Essays are graded by examiners appointed by the IB on a scale of 0 to 34 . You'll be graded on five criteria, each with its own set of points. You can learn more about how EE scoring works by reading the IB guide to extended essays .

• Criterion A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
• Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)
• Criterion C: Critical Thinking (12 points maximum)
• Criterion D: Presentation (4 points maximum)
• Criterion E: Engagement (6 points maximum)

How well you do on each of these criteria will determine the final letter grade you get for your EE. You must earn at least a D to be eligible to receive your IB Diploma.

Although each criterion has a point value, the IB explicitly states that graders are not converting point totals into grades; instead, they're using qualitative grade descriptors to determine the final grade of your Extended Essay . Grade descriptors are on pages 102-103 of this document .

Here's a rough estimate of how these different point values translate to letter grades based on previous scoring methods for the EE. This is just an estimate —you should read and understand the grade descriptors so you know exactly what the scorers are looking for.

How Does the Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma?

The Extended Essay grade is combined with your TOK (Theory of Knowledge) grade to determine how many points you get toward your IB Diploma.

This diagram shows how the two scores are combined to determine how many points you receive for your IB diploma (3 being the most, 0 being the least). In order to get your IB Diploma, you have to earn 24 points across both categories (the TOK and EE). The highest score anyone can earn is 45 points.

Let's say you get an A on your EE and a B on TOK. You will get 3 points toward your Diploma. As of 2014, a student who scores an E on either the extended essay or TOK essay will not be eligible to receive an IB Diploma .

Prior to the class of 2010, a Diploma candidate could receive a failing grade in either the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge and still be awarded a Diploma, but this is no longer true.

The Extended Essay (EE) in Business Management

Let’s start off with the basics…

The extended essay is an independent piece of research.

4,000-word paper.

Students are required to have three mandatory reflection sessions with their supervisors.

The final session, a concluding interview, is also known as viva voce (oral presentation)

The score a student receives relates to a band. The bands are:

• A – work of an excellent standard.
• B – work of a good standard.
• C –work of a satisfactory standard.
• D – work of a mediocre standard.
• E – work of an elementary standard

The Extended Essay (EE) in Business Management is an in-depth study of a focused topic that demonstrates your ability to conduct independent research and communicate your findings effectively. Here are some steps you can follow to write an excellent EE in Business Management (IB DP):

Choose a topic: You should select a topic that interests you and is relevant to business management. It is important to select a topic that is narrow enough to allow for a focused analysis but broad enough to have sufficient research material. You can consult with your supervisor or use resources such as academic journals and textbooks to help you identify a topic.

Define your research question : Your research question should be clear and specific. The research question should be based on a real-world problem or issue related to business management. Here’s a guide on how to refine your title.

Consideration 1 : Which Business Management units have you really enjoyed?

E.g. Marketing and more specifically Social Media Marketing

Consideration 2: A country, business, case study, relevant theory, strategy or model (although you don’t have to include every single one!).

Consideration 3: Typical question starters in Business Management EE research questions:

• To what extent…
• How effective was…
• How did [insert model/theory/strategy] contribute to the success of….
• To what extent can X be attributed to…
• Should X company implement X
• What was the influence/cause of X…

Narrowing down the research question:

Think of an inverted triangle, start off broad and slowly narrow the focus of your research question:

  Linking all the ideas from the inverted triangle we can come up with a general title of:

“How does Tesla’s effective use of social media marketing contribute to the company’s success in the electric vehicle industry?”

This is a great start but the question is far too broad, how could we refine the title even more? Let’s think about Tesla’s SMM what do you know about it? Start searching using internet resources…with caution.

There are several reasons why we should be careful when using internet resources, including:

• Accuracy: Not all websites provide accurate information. It’s important to verify the information presented and to check multiple sources to ensure accuracy.
• Bias: Many websites have a specific purpose or agenda (such as a blog), and the information presented may be biased or one-sided. It’s important to consider the purpose and audience of the website to determine its bias.
• Quality: Anyone can create a website, and not all websites are of high quality. It’s important to evaluate the credibility of the author and the website before relying on the information presented.

When considering the purpose and audience of a website, it’s important to ask questions such as:

• Who is the intended audience for this website?
• What is the purpose of this website?
• Is the author an expert in the subject matter?
• Does the website provide references or sources for its information?
• Does the website contain advertising or sponsored content that may influence the information presented?

To help refine the question we will use the following Forbes article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2019/05/06/tesla-spends-zero-on-ads-heres-where-bmw-toyota-ford-and-porsche-spend-digital-ad-dollars/?sh=2734ac8711d4

As we can see from the information provided it is interesting to see that Tesla has spent zero dollars on paid campaigns!!!

Let’s use the question starter of “to what extent…” and add into the question our new found information about Tesla’s zero spending on SMM…

“To what extent does Tesla’s organic social media strategy contribute to the company’s success in the electric vehicle industry, despite its minimal spending on paid social media advertising?”

Is there a possibility that this research question might be too narrow? You may find in the process of researching that your research question is too narrow or there is not enough information or data available to answer your question. Don’t panic! Just add a comparative element. In the case of Tesla, we could compare how another auto brand allocates and spends money on its SMM campaign.

“How does Tesla’s organic social media strategy impact its success in the electric vehicle industry, given its minimal spending on paid social media advertising, compared to Toyota, which allocates a significant portion of its budget to social media marketing?”

Now that we’ve refined the question it’s time to:

Conduct research: You should gather information from a variety of sources, including academic journals, books, online databases, and other credible sources. You should critically evaluate the sources to ensure they are reliable and relevant to your research question (see earlier point about caution with online resources).

Fortunately, in the field of Business Management, we have the option to rely on secondary resources for our Extended Essay (EE). However, should you decide to incorporate primary sources, it would typically be to provide quantitative or qualitative data that can assist in addressing your research question.

Using secondary resources in your EE is essential to support your research and provide evidence for your arguments. Here are some tips on how to effectively use secondary resources in your essay:

• Choose reliable sources: When selecting secondary resources, it’s crucial to ensure that they are reliable and credible. Consider using scholarly articles, academic journals, books, and reputable websites. Avoid using unreliable sources such as blogs, social media, and personal websites.

Artistic materials/Letters/Tweets/Visual materials/Lectures/Broadcasts/Blogs/Audio materials/Interviews Maps/Advertisements/Graphics/Conversations/Charts/Photographs

But don’t start writing yet. First you should note down:

Create an outline: An outline will help you organize your thoughts and ideas. It should include an introduction, main body, and conclusion. You should also include subheadings and bullet points to help you structure your essay. Check this outline with your supervisor.

Other things to include are:

• Which theory you used: e.g. SMM/motivational theories of HRM/strategic alliances…
• Give any definitions: e.g. what does BCG matrix stand for
• Methodology: e.g. secondary or primary/marketing mix/SWOT analysis

Write your essay: Your essay should be well-structured and clearly written. You should use evidence from your research to support your arguments and conclusions. It’s important to use academic language and cite your sources correctly.

Revise and edit: You should review your essay carefully and make any necessary revisions. You should also check for spelling and grammar errors and ensure that your citations are accurate.

Submit your essay: Once you are satisfied with your essay, you should submit it to your supervisor. They will review it and provide feedback to help you improve your work.

Remember, the EE in Business Management is a significant piece of work that requires dedication, time management, and critical thinking skills. It’s essential to start early and seek guidance from your supervisor throughout the process. Good luck!

Introduction to Business Management in the Diploma Programme (first exams 2024)

Nature of the subject

IB DP Business Management is a rigorous, challenging, and dynamic discipline in Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) within the IB Diploma Programme (and IB Career-related Programme). The course is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of Business Management tools and theories, as well as their ability to apply a range of subject-specific techniques.

Business Management students learn to analyse, discuss, and evaluate business activities at local, national, and international levels. The course covers a range of organizations from all sectors, as well as the socio-cultural, economic, and international contexts in which those organizations operate.

The IB DP Business Management course continues to grow each year. In 2023, there was a total of 35,173 candidates who studied the subject (22,182 at HL and 12,991 at SL). The chart below shows that the number of BM candidates has grown by 871.1% during the given time period (a highly impressive growth rate by any measure!)

With the new syllabus comes many more exciting opportunities to engage the growing number of students learning about Business Management.

Aims of the IB Business Management course

The aims of the IB Business Management course at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) are to:

Develop as confident, creative and compassionate business leaders, entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs and as change agents.

Foster an informed understanding of ethical and sustainable business practices.

Explore the connections between individuals, businesses, and society.

Engage with decision-making as a process and a skill.

The four interdisciplinary concepts for the course are:

Sustainability

For teachers who taught the previous course (M16 - N23 exams), you will notice that "Change" and "Ethics" remain in the new syllabus (first exams 2024).

Using these four concepts in an authentic way ( concept based learning ) will enable students to explore the content of the  syllabus from multiple lenses or perspectives. Each unit in the new course will begin with conceptual understandings statements that include the 4 key concepts and summarize important ideas and core processes that are central to the unit (such as Marketing or Operations Management). Inquiry statements are also included for each unit of the syllabus to support teachers and students.

Note that assessment of conceptual understandings is a formal requirement for students in their Internal Assessment , based on a real-world issue or problem faced by an actual organization using one of the four prescribed key concepts (in addition to applying their knowledge of appropriate Business Management tools, theories, and techniques).

The Business Management Toolkit (BMT)

The BMT provides a valuable set of 15 different tools or frameworks to analyse various topics and situations in the context of the BM course.

Although the BMT is a separate part of the syllabus content, it is expected that teachers will integrate the toolkit throughout the teaching of the course.

Approaches to delivering the BMT

There are several ways that teachers can use to deliver the BMT in their lessons. Two commonly used approaches are outlined below.

Approach 1 - Using multiple tools for a specific unit in the syllabus

Take the example below that shows how two of the tools in the BMT can be used in the integration of Unit 2.4 Motivation and demotivation :

BMT 7 Descriptive statistics - Discuss how descriptive statistics might be used to provide relevant information and data in the appraisal process.

BMT 11 Hofstede’s cultural dimensions (HL only) - How does knowledge of cultural dimensions help managers to understand what motivates different people?

BMT 11 Hofstede’s cultural dimensions (HL only) - Is it culturally acceptable to use 360-degree appraisals?

Here is another example of this approach, for delivering Unit 4.5 (the marketing mix):

BMT 4 Boston Consulting Group matrix - Discuss how the BCG matrix can help with a firm’s pricing decisions.

BMT 5 Business plans - Discuss the importance of pricing decisions in a business plan.

BMT 10 Porter’s generic strategies (HL only) - Discuss how Porter’s generic strategies can support managers in their pricing decisions, such as the use of penetration or predatory pricing methods.

Approach 2 - Using a single tool in the BMT for multiple units in the syllabus

Take the example below that shows how BMT 2 (Ansoff matrix) can be integrated into the teaching and learning of various units of the syllabus:

Unit 1.3 - Examine how Ansoff’s matrix can aid decision making about organizational objectives.

Unit 1.5 - Using the Ansoff matrix, evaluate the growth strategies for an organization of your choice.

Unit 1.6 - Examine market development as a growth strategy for a MNC of your choice.

Unit 4.2 - Distinguish between differentiation and diversification.

Unit 4.5 - Discuss how Ansoff’s growth strategies can extend the life cycle for a product of your choice.

BMT 1 (SWOT analysis) - Discuss the merits of using both a SWOT analysis and the Ansoff matrix to inform management decision making.

The last example shows how a particular tool (Ansoff's matrix in this case) can be integrated with other tools (such as SWOT analysis) in delivering the course. This can help students to consolidate their understanding and application of the tools.

Difference between SL & HL Business Management

The recommended hours devoted to teaching is 240 hours for HL compared to 150 hours for SL.

There is extra depth and breadth required - SL students study 26 topics, along with 8 tools from the Business Management Toolkit (BMT). In contrast, HL students have 37 topics across the five units of the syllabus, along with an addition 7 tools in the BMT, i.e., there are 15 tools in total for HL only students.

Therefore, the nature of the examination questions and the weighting of these examination papers also differ for SL and HL students. Read more about the IB Business Management examinations here .

The Internal Assessment is a common task consisting of a business research project of up to 1,800 words.

The new Internal Assessment (IA) - first exams May 2024

The most noticeable change to the IA is that the assessment becomes common for both HL and SL. The new IA is a business research project that requires students to produce a research project about a real business issue or problem facing a particular organization using one of the key concepts (conceptual lens) and apply their knowledge of appropriate Business Management tools and theories. The maximum marks for the IA = 25 marks, and the word count limit is 1,800 words.

Students will be required to:

select a real business issue or problem for their research project that relates to any part of the IB syllabus

refer directly to a single business organization, but may consider industry-wide issues that impact on that organization

provide a research question for the business research project that could either be forward looking or backward looking

base their research on primary and/or secondary research, selected for suitability, depth, and breadth

use only one of the four key concepts (change, creativity, ethics, or sustainability) as a lens through which to analyse the research project

attach to the business research project 3 to 5 supporting documents from which the majority of the information for the project has been obtained

produce a business research project that does not exceed 1,800 words

fully reference all supporting documents and additional sources and include them in a bibliography.

The IA is marked by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course.

The recommended time allocation for the internal assessment = 20 hours .

IB Business Management and Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

There are many opportunities in the IB Business Management course to consider knowledge questions and the various Areas of Knowledge. There are also opportunities for cross curricular activities within Group 3 and indeed across the Diploma Programme to use TOK questions as the focus for debate. For example, research by Oxfam shows that the share of the world’s wealth owned by the richest 1% increased from 44% in 2009 to 48% in 2013. Recent data shows that the wealthiest 1% in economically developed economies saw an increase in their wealth during the global coronavirus pandemic - despite it causing the greatest recession in living memory. The wealthiest 1% on the planet owns more than 50% of the world’s wealth.

IB Business Management students can be asked to discuss:

How we know that such data and information is reliable – what measure of wealth did Oxfam use and how was the data collected?

Whether Oxfam has any vested interests that might influence how they report information on poverty and inequalities around the world.

Whether there is room for both logic (rational decision making) and emotion in business management.

What implications wealth inequalities have on syllabus content, such as entrepreneurship, motivation, labour productivity, growth and evolution, and the globalization of business functions.

What needs to be true for ethical objectives to contribute to socially responsible business strategy?

Whether 'business ethics' is an oxymoron?

IB Business Management and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

Creativity, activity, and service (CAS) is a core component of the IB Diploma Programme (along with TOK and the Extended Essay ). In exploring the interactions between individuals, societies and their environments, students reflect on their own identity and potential roles in society at large. They are encouraged to start seeing how they can contribute to positive change in their local and global communities.

CAS provides a framework for IB students to learn beyond the parameters of the physical classroom. Examples include:

Review of non-profit activity - Students work with a non-profit organization in their area to review vision and mission statements, aims, objectives, strategies and tactics, and their relationships with stakeholder groups in the local community.

Create a business plan - Students create a business plan for a CAS project or to start a non-profit business of their own.

Advertising campaign - Students can apply the principles of marketing in Unit 4 of the syllabus to advocate a particular cause / fundraising campaign supported by the school.

The Extended Essay (EE) in IB Business Management

Along with CAS and TOK , the Extended Essay (EE) is part of the Core for all IB Diploma Programme students (SL and HL). This consists of a 4,000 word academic essay on a topic of the student's choice. This must be completed independently, but with the support of an EE Supervisor (who must be a teacher at the school).

The corporate world of business offers students many potential opportunities for writing an orginal Extended Essay. Living in an increasingly globalized world, students are involved in what businesses do, from being consumers of goods and services to being campaigners for increased social responsibility through aspects of an IB education. Decision-making takes place at all levels within business organizations, in areas such as human resource management, finance and accounts, operations management and marketing. Students who have a genuine interest in any aspect of business management can choose to explore this in more depth through their own independent research for the Extended Essay.

Some example of research questions for the EE include:

Topic 1 : An evaluation of the introduction of Total Quality Management (TQM) at ABC Company .  

Research Question 1 : To what extent has the introduction of total quality management (TQM) improved quality assurance at ABC Company ?

Topic 2 : An evaluation of the contribution of JIT in the textile industries.

Awarding the IB Diploma

The overall IB Diploma points are calculated by adding together the marks achieved from each of the six acaddmic subjects (awarded from 1 up to 7 points) and then including between zero and three points from the Diploma core . This means that the highest score that a candidate can achieve is 45 points (6 subjects) × 7 points (top grade) plus 3 points from the Core.

Unlike the academic subjects, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) are graded from A to E. The third element of the Diploma Core, Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) does not receive a grade but the CAS learning outcomes must be met in order for a candidate to be awarded the IB Diploma.

The minimum number of points to be awarded the IB Diploma is 24 points . However, there are nine failure conditions (or failing conditions) as outlined below.

The 9 failure conditions

A candidate can only receive the overall ID Diploma if none of the following nine conditions applies:

CAS requirements have not been met.

The candidate’s total points are fewer than 24.

An N (no grade awarded) has been given for Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, or for a contributing subject.

A grade E has been awarded for one or both of Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

There is a grade 1 awarded in a subject (SL or HL).

Grade 2 has been awarded three or more times (SL or HL).

Grade 3 or below has been awarded four or more times (HL or SL).

Candidate has gained fewer than 12 points on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).

Candidate has gained fewer than 9 points on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).

Bilingual diplomas

As an alternative to the standard IB Diploma, a “bilingual Diploma” can be awarded to a candidate who:

completes two languages selected from Group 1 with the award of a grade 3 or higher in both languages, OR

completes one of the subjects from Group 3 or Group 4 in a language that is not the same as the candidate's nominated Group 1 language. The candidate must attain a grade 3 or higher in both the Group 1 language and the subject from Group 3 or 4.

The Extended Essay or school-based syllabus cannot contribute to the award of a bilingual Diploma.

RE: Research Question and Title of Extended Essay

Please note the statement below from the EE curriculum manager regarding the need to have both a title and a RQ for all subjects. Previous versions of the EE Guide indicated that the title and the RQ should be the same for History, Business Management and Mathematics. This is no longer the case.  All essays, regardless of the subject, need to have both a RQ and a title.

Hi Kathy, 

To answer your question, I am going to quote directly from a response John Royce provided, on this forum, in October in response to a very similar question: (it was a question about using Spanish sources - hence the mention of Spanish)

It is certainly  permissible to use sources which are not in the language of the essay, but translation into the target language is required , one cannot assume that the reader understands the original language.

It is usual to quote the original as well as presenting the translation.  [Do not put quotation marks around your translation, just around the original]

Umberto Eco argues ("in Mouse or rat?") that direct translation may lose meaning, paraphrase or use of different idioms may be required to get the ideas across. Paul Bellos ("Is that a fish in your ear?") makes a similar argument - direct translation may confound meaning... Direct translation may not be ideal - meaning and understanding are preferred - so, not to worry that your student with her good Spanish cannot present a direct translation.

What  must be made clear is that the translations are those of the student;  these are her understandings. Readers can make of that what they will - and if unsure, are presented with the original - they can seek another translation.  A note in the acknowledgements and/or in the introduction to the effect that all translations are those of the writer is ... essential.

In response to the question about the  Bibliography/Works cited, my preference would be to list the source in its original Thai version, but perhaps with the English in brackets, to help the examiner.

Your bibliography will have the entries in Thai characters first in the document. Any in-text citation to Thai sources will be in (Thai characters [English translation]).

Format of the Extended Essay

Required Formatting

The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal academic style, appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. Given that the extended essay is a formally written research paper, it should strive to maintain a professional, academic look. 

To help achieve this, the following formatting is  required:

• 12-point, readable font (Calibri or Times New Roman);
• double spacing throughout entire Essay;
• page numbering - top right corner;
• no candidate or school name or supervisor name on the title page or page headers.

Submitting the extended essay in the required format will help set the tone of the essay and will aid readability for on-screen assessment by examiners.

Required S tructure

The structure of the essay is very important. It helps students to organize the argument, making the best use of the evidence collected. 

There are six required elements of the final work to be submitted. More details about each element are given in the  “Presentation”  section. Please note that the order in which these elements are presented here is not necessarily the order in which they should be written. 

Six required elements of the extended essay:

• Contents page
• Introduction
• Body of the essay
• References and bibliography -- if MLA "Works Cited" if CSE "References"

1. Required Title Page  

The title page should include  only  the following information: 

• the title of the essay
• the research question
• the subject the essay is registered in (if it is a language essay also state which category it falls into; if a world studies essay also state the theme and the two subjects utilized) 

The upper limit is 4,000 words for all extended essays. 

2. Required Contents Page

A contents page must be provided at the beginning of the extended essay and all pages should be numbered. Please note that an index page is not required and if included will be treated as if it is not present.

3. Required Introduction

The introduction should tell the reader what to expect in the essay. The introduction should make clear to the reader the focus of the essay, the scope of the research, in particular an indication of the sources to be used, and an insight into the line of argument to be taken. 

While students should have a sense of the direction and key focus of their essay, it is sometimes advisable to finalize the introduction once the body of the essay is complete.

4. Required Body of the Essay  (research, analysis, discussion, and evaluation)

The main task is writing the body of the essay, which should be presented in the form of a reasoned argument. The form of this varies with the subject of the essay but as the argument develops it should be clear to the reader what relevant evidence has been discovered, where/how it has been discovered and how it supports the argument. In some subjects, for example, the sciences, sub-headings within the main body of the essay will help the reader to understand the argument (and will also help the student to keep on track). In structuring their extended essay, students must take into consideration the expected conventions of the subject in which their extended essay is registered. 

Once the main body of the essay is complete, it is possible to finalize the introduction (which tells the reader what to expect) and the conclusion (which says what has been achieved, including notes of any limitations and any questions that have not been resolved). 

Any information that is important to the argument  must not  be included in appendices or footnotes/endnotes. The examiner  will not  read notes or appendices, so an essay that is not complete in itself will be compromised across the assessment criteria.

5. Required Conclusion

The conclusion says what has been achieved, including notes of any limitations and any questions that have not been resolved. While students might draw conclusions throughout the essay based on their findings, it is important that there is a final, summative conclusion at the end. This conclusion(s) must relate to the research question posed.

6.  Required References & Bibliography

Students should use their chosen style of academic referencing as soon as they start writing. That way they are less likely to forget to include a citation. It is also easier than trying to add references at a later stage. For more information on this, refer to the guidelines in the IB document  Effective citing and referencing.

Writing the essay takes time but if students have used their Researcher's reflection space and reflection sessions in a meaningful way they should be well prepared to develop their arguments.
