حب الوطنی سے ہمارا مطلب ہے اپنے ملک سے حقیقی محبت۔ حب الوطنی کو دوسرے ممالک سے نفرت کے طور پر غلط نہیں سمجھا جانا چاہئے۔ اگر کوئی اپنے ملک سے محبت کرتا ہے اور دوسرے ممالک سے نفرت کرتا ہے تو یہ حب الوطنی کے بجائے قوم پرستی ہے۔

ماں اور مادر وطن جنت سے افضل ہیں۔ ہم اپنی ماں کے لیے کبھی اپنی عزت نہیں گنواتے چاہے وہ ہم سے پیار نہ کرے۔ اسی طرح ہم ہر حال میں اپنے ملک کا احترام کرتے ہیں۔ ہم اپنے مادر وطن کے مقروض ہیں جہاں ہم پیدا ہوئے اور پرورش پائی۔ اس کا سر بلند رکھنا ہمارا اخلاقی فرض ہے۔

Urdu literature in general and Urdu poetry in particular, always played its part in generating, shaping and mobilizing Indian public opinion, and defeated thereof all odds of time and space through India's progressive journey. Accordingly, Urdu literature resisted the British imperialism from its very beginning. However, during the first half of 20 th century, when British employed in full swing all political, military, ideological and Machiavellian tools to maintain their imperial permanence in India, thereby dividing Indians on different grounds, Urdu poetry performed well its moral responsibility of generating and mobilizing united public opinion against British rule. Urdu poets fought British Raj by inculcating among Indians spirit of harmony, unity, patriotism, and sacrifice. Urdu poetry, besides giving a vide space to all forms of anti-British resistance going on in India and abroad, also quickened the pace of freedom movement by mobilizing the public opinion against British Raj. This piece of research therefore, explores the dominant nationalistic trends in Urdu poetry during first half of 20 th century.

Indian literature especially Urdu literature is a live symbol of India's rich cultural heritage and secular thought process. While responding the challenges coming in India's way, with time and space, Urdu literature, in general and Urdu poetry in particular always played its part in framing, shaping and mobilizing the public opinion. Accordingly, Urdu literature resisted the British rule from its very beginning. However, during 1940's, when British employed in full swing, all Machiavellian, ideological, political and military tools to maintain their imperial permanence in India, by dividing Indians on different grounds, Urdu poetry performed well its moral responsibility of framing and mobilizing united public opinion against British rule. Urdu poetry not only responded and resisted the British policies but also inculcated among Indians feelings of patriotism, nationalism and quench of freedom. Urdu poetry besides giving a vide coverage to all forms of anti-British resistance going on in India and abroad also encouraged Indians and inculcated in then the spirit of sacrifice and fighting ,thereby quickening the pace of freedom movement and mobilizing the public opinion in favor of freedom movement. This piece of research work will therefore, explore those poems and verses of Urdu poetry which not only motivated and mobilized the Indian people against British rule but also developed among Indians the sense of patriotism, nationalism and freedom and increased the pace of independence movement.

This paper argues that contrary to some popular perceptions, the ideological shift in Iqbal dates not from 1930 (when he apparently moved towards the acceptance of the two-nation theory at the Allahabad Session of the Muslim League) but to his stay in Europe from 1905 to 1908 (after which he made a complete and abrupt shift from Indian nationalism to revivalism and Pan-Islamism). This shift is powerfully expressed in the political and cultural imaginings of both his Urdu and Persian poetry. His poetry becomes suffused with the ideas of revivalism and Pan-Islamism in counter-position to those of composite nationhood and territorial nationalism on which the Indian national movement was premised. The shift is embodied in poetic imagery and metaphor incompatible with the modern idea of nationalism, especially the dominant idea of Indian nationalism. Iqbal's later thoughts concerning Islam's relations with non-Muslims in India and elsewhere promote an adversarial historical and cultural narrative of Islam. Though triggered by a passionate rejection of the West and its modernity, the shift manifested not just in a critique of the West but also of all non-Islamic cultures and civilizations. Iqbal's narrative of Islam is teleological and triumphalist. Far from being defensive about the charges of intolerance and aggression levelled against Islam by its critics, he proudly invokes imagery of the sword and the conquest in the history of Islam, while bemoaning the decline of its political power in the modern era. Iqbal's quest is for a supposedly pure Islam of the past and its revival in the twentieth century in the form of a redefined, reconstituted and revitalized Umma which cuts across boundaries of nations, continents and ethnicities. Few poets in the history of the modern world have had such influence as Allama Iqbal, and fewer still have made such fundamental shifts.

Poetry is a metaphorical writing. It is the soul of literature. The sublimity of poetry lies in its bejeweling itself with rhythm and literary devices. Various civilizations have encoded their cultures, traditions and knowledge in poetry. Composing poetry and decoding it is no less than an art. For a translator of poetry, it is a herculean task when compared to prose translation. This paper critically examines how Sir Muhammad Iqbal, a renowned Urdu poet, successfully translated William Barnes" "A Mother"s Dream" and Mary Matilda Betham"s "A Child"s Hymn" into Urdu while overcoming those challenges.

In the nineteenth century, Muslim modernist reformers sought to ground an agenda for social and political rejuvenation in a return to the spirit of the early Muslim community. However, the influence of this quest for communal regeneration on theological discourses was, in some cases, less notable than its influence upon projects for cultural and social reform. One area of focus for Indian modernists of the nineteenth century was literature and the literary arts, including poetry, which were now deemed relevant to notions of cultural health, authenticity and decline. Under the dictum that a people's condition is reflected in their language, the themes of moral degeneration and reform came to have a strong bearing on the indigenous valuation of poetry and the literary arts, challenging the criteria upon which such literature was judged. In this paper, I will analyse how the modernist agenda for social reform led to the birth of a new literary romanticism in Urdu poetry.
