Cricket is not just a game but an emotion for all Indians. We consider it a festival, and it brings us immense happiness. It is sometimes also said that cricket is also the unofficial sport of India. Cricket is my favourite game. It is a very famous sport and has immensely evolved during the ages. Cricket is for both men and women. It is an outdoor game which requires a total of 11 players. Two teams play against each other, and the team with the maximum number of runs wins the match. Cricket can be played in three forms - a test match, a twenty-twenty and a one-day game. Cricket has two parts - one is batting, and the other is fielding or bowling. The team that wins the toss gets to choose whether they are willing to bat or bowl. My favourite is batting since I excel in that part. Cricket is also known as the “game of uncertainty”, as the winner cannot be easily predicted until the last ball.

I love playing all sports, but a sport that excites me is cricket. Two teams consisting of 11 players each play it. The official body that governs all cricket and organises tournaments is ICC. Cricket has three formats mainly: test format, ODI format, and T20 format. The test match is for five days. The ODI runs for 50 overs, and the T20 game is for 20 overs which is the shortest format.

Cricket has been an integral part of my life since my childhood. Playing gully cricket with my friends on Sunday afternoons is a memory that till now I love to relive. Each six, four, or wicket can bring tears to our eyes, either of joy or sadness. I still remember the world cup winning night in 2011. We were all jumping with happiness, and that six from Dhoni made us cry out of joy. I was also a batsman in a state-level team back then. Every game of cricket makes me happy, and the glee of playing or watching cricket is immeasurable. This game has taught me sportsmanship spirit and to never give up until the game is over. Cricket is not just a game but rather a beautiful emotion.

I started watching cricket on television in my childhood. Since then, I have always been mesmerised by this game. The World Cup is my favourite tournament.

My Favourite Player

My favourite player is Virat Kohli. He is my inspiration and helps me to believe that we can achieve whatever we can if we are determined. His batting style and the attitude he carries on and off the field make me his fan. He plays an integral role in making India a strong competitor in the ICC tournaments. He has already achieved so many things at such a young age that he is known to be one of the most incredible men who have ever played the game of cricket.

About Cricket

Cricket is played between 2 teams; each team consists of 11 members. It has two main parts—the first being batting and the second being bowling or fielding. The team winning the toss can choose whether to bat or bowl first. The team with the maximum number of runs wins the match. A total of 3 umpires are present during a game to give their decision on whether the particular batsman is out, not out, hit a six or hit a four. The third umpire is the one to tackle a difficult situation where critical decisions need to be taken.

Cricket, also known as the “gentleman’s game”, has emerged as a worldwide sport. Earlier, women were not encouraged by society to play cricket. But over the years, the spirit of cricket has encouraged women to participate in this game too. Nowadays people visit and cheer for women's cricket tournaments. Even though cricket is not the national game of India, it is still considered to be one of the most played sports. India has won the ICC ODI (One Day International) World Cup twice. The first was in 1983, and the second one was in 2011 under the captainship of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, respectively. India also won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. The World Cup is held every four years.

My Love For Cricket

Cricket is my favourite sport. I love batting. Playing with friends in summer and winter evenings is the best part of my day. Virat Kohli is my favourite batsman. It baffles me how much the man has gained at such a young age. He keeps on inspiring me with his skills and talent. Over the years, cricket has enhanced my critical thinking and also developed the qualities of team spirit and hard work. While doing the batting, the bowler can take the wicket of the batsmen by either hitting directly the stumps behind him or by throwing the ball at the stumps on either side of the pitch while the batsman is taking a run. Another way to take a wicket is when the batsman hits the ball in the air and the fielder catches it before the ball hits the ground or the boundary.

Cricket was first played by Prince Edward in England during the sixteenth century and from there it began to spread throughout the world and this was the reason why this game was called a ‘Royal Game’.

In India this game was introduced by the British and now this game has become more popular and loved than our national game.

Cricket in India became famous, and many played when the Britishers invaded the country. They learned the game, and today it has become the world champions in this sport. Cricket is one of the most played games worldwide, and many loves this game. It is a game which was first played by Prince Edward, and then it spread all over the world.

Cricket is a game that is played by using a bat and a ball between two teams of eleven members each. Rules of this game are not very complex, and so even the kids can play it. This led cricket game to be the most favourite one in the subcontinent.

Why My Favourite Game Is Cricket?

There are different formats of crickets like T-20 cricket, One-Day International, Limited Over Cricket, National League Systems, Test Matches.

Test Matches

Cricket is the national game of the country England, but in our country , India people are just crazy for this game. Cricket is a beautiful game played between two teams each of eleven members. In my village there is a big open area which we use as a cricket ground, every year all our friends prepare a cricket pitch by ourselves.

We play cricket on this ground whenever we get time, and in the evening when everyone is at the home we gather our team and practice here every day. I am the captain of my team. During the holidays our team plays a cricket match with the neighboring village team it is quite fun and everyone enjoys it very much. Tennis , badminton, etc. Since in India the famous game is cricket many children are having it as a hobby. But my favorite is football.

My Favorite Game – Football

When I was a child I liked cricket too but was never good at it. So I changed my hobby to football . Football was new to me in class 3. I did not play well in the beginning. But I liked the game very much. So I started practicing it. As a result, I began to play it well.

In class 5 I became the captain of my class football team. At that time I was so much excited to become the captain. With time a learned a lot about football.

In Football total 22 players play. Division of players is in two teams. Each team has 11 players. These players have to play with the ball only with legs. They have to kick the ball in the other teams’ goal post. Football is not like cricket. Weather is not an issue in football. Due to which players can play it the whole year.

In addition to football is a game of stamina. The players have to run on the field for the whole game. Also for 90 minutes too. Since 90 minutes is a lot there is a division in time. There are two halves. The first is of 45 minutes. Likewise, the second half is of 45 minutes too.

Rules in the Game

Like all the other games there are some rules and regulations too. First of all, the ball should not touch the ball by hand. If the ball gets touched by hand the other team gets a free-kick. There is a small area near the goal post. ‘D’ is the name of that area. The boundary of the ‘D’ is at least 10 yards from the goal post. If the player touches the ball there the opposite team gets a penalty.

Moreover, there are other rules. The second important rule is the ‘Off-Side Rule’. In this rule, if the player crosses the defender line it becomes an offside. If you are a true fan of football you must know what are defenders.

In the game, the players are into three subcategories. The first category is Forward. Forward are players who put the ball in the net of the goal post. The second category is a Midfielder. Midfielders are players who pass the ball to the forward player. The third category is the defenders. Defenders stop the other team players to put the ball in the goal post.

In addition to all the players playing on the field, there are other players too. These are substitute players. Football is a harsh game. Because of which many players get injured. When players get injured the substitutes take their place for the rest of the game.

Furthermore, there is a referee on the field. Whenever any place does a foul the referee whistles and stops the game. The referee then gives the penalty or a free-kick to the team foul against.

Moreover, if a player injures and fouls the other team player the referee gives him a Yellow or Red Card. The yellow card is a warning card. The red card is a suspension card. This card suspends the player for the rest of the game.

It took me many months to learn how to shoot the striker properly and hit the tokens on the board. It takes a lot of time to become good at the game as we need a lot of practice to excel in it.

Badminton can be played by anyone as long as they love games. There are a few rules for playing the game in a competition or championship. You can choose to relax some of the rules and play just for fun as per your own plan.

Badminton is a game that gives a full-body workout. You will have to constantly move around the court in the direction of the shuttlecock and hit it using your racket with the required force. Throughout the game, you exercise your legs, torso and upper body.

I am known as the best badminton player in my school because I practise in the evening every day. I have participated in many events at the regional and national levels, and won several championships. In recent years, badminton has also become popular in video games. My love for the sport makes me play that too, however, I prefer to play the sport on an actual court with a real opponent. The thrill of hitting the shuttlecock high into the air and running around to chase it is unmatched in a video game.

The novelist Joseph O’Neill has a good idea of his daughter’s earliest memories: being driven through the northern swath of Benin in a jeep, in hot pursuit of a (fictional) story her father himself was only beginning to understand. This is remote terrain, even for visitors who aren’t American toddlers on their first trip to West Africa.

This was in 2015, part of an essential literary reconnaissance mission for O’Neill, who was at work on a sprawling tale of an adrift but brilliant man, an athletic prodigy and the fallibility of human consensus.

O’Neill is accustomed to working on a large canvas, writing books that crisscross the world and follow intelligent, sensitive, occasionally self-lacerating men in exile.

The resulting novel, “Godwin,” which Pantheon will publish on Tuesday, centers on Mark Wolfe, a roguish and capable (if underperforming) technical writer in Pittsburgh who belongs to a writing cooperative and appears to be suffering a “crisis of dignity.” When his half brother, an aspiring soccer talent scout in England, calls with an enigmatic prospect — the promise of signing Africa’s answer to Lionel Messi — Mark embarks on an adventure that will change the course of his life.

Braided in with Mark’s plight is a workplace drama, full of bureaucratic back-stabbing and passive-aggressive emails of a sort that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a city council meeting or watched public access TV. The stakes of both stories — a one-in-a-million shot at celebrity for a young athlete, the elusive promise of professional harmony — are equally high, and ratchet up as the plotlines inevitably dovetail by the novel’s end.

O’Neill, 60, was born in Cork, Ireland, to a Turkish mother and an Irish father. His father’s work in the construction of petrochemical installations took the family across the world, from Iran to South Africa to Mozambique, before they eventually settled in the Netherlands, in The Hague. O’Neill practiced law in London for over a decade before coming to the States, but always harbored ambitions to be a writer.

New York has been his home since 1998, and he has earned his MetroCard: He raised his three now-grown sons in the Chelsea Hotel, and was a regular on the local cricket scene for years. (Though he rarely picks up a bat anymore, he is vice president of the Staten Island Cricket Club , where his daughter now plays.) These days, he lives in Crown Heights with his partner, the writer Rivka Galchen, and their daughter, and teaches at Bard College.

He is best known for his 2008 novel “ Netherland ,” about a Dutch lawyer in post-9/11 New York who is sifting through the wreckage of his broken marriage and family, and who gets mixed up with a Trinidadian hustler in the process. That novel’s memorable elements included Russian steam rooms, outer borough shakedowns and a pipe dream of converting Floyd Bennett Field into a cricket pitch.

In 2014 came “ The Dog ” (his favorite of his novels, he said), about a lawyer working in Dubai for a family of Lebanese billionaires, who takes on increasingly dubious tasks and ruminates on a sour breakup. “Godwin” marks the end of this unofficial trilogy. The novels don’t share characters or settings or even a narrative point of view, but all three have a global focus, and each is vivified by a love of sports: cricket, scuba diving and now soccer.

“I have spent years of my life playing or watching or dreaming about ball games,” O’Neill wrote in an email. “I’m also an intuitive, somewhat dreamy writer. So sports seep into, and sometimes saturate, my fiction. Many writers are like that — we have arbitrary, pre-creative obsessions that emerge as our subject matter, whether we like it or not. I’m stuck with sports.”

When O’Neill began the novel that became “Godwin” about a decade ago, the basic premise — two brothers, a soccer prodigy — was in his mind. But the story “lacked the kind of dimension it needed,” he said over lunch at a West African restaurant near his home. The book needed a wild idea, something other than the “life of a white male” O’Neill felt he had previously evoked — “that anxiety, uncertainty, emasculation.”

That’s when a new, “Ishiguro-esque voice” materialized — “a calm, rational voice. And it turned out to be that of a Black woman.”

The perspective in question belongs to the other narrator of “Godwin”: Lakesha Williams, a colleague of Mark’s who co-founded the writing cooperative where they met. As Mark obsesses over finding the young soccer star, poring over satellite imagery while chasing instant coffee with pimento-stuffed olives, Lakesha fends off existential challenges to the group’s leadership and grapples with the limits of her own idealism.

Consensus, organization, democratic governing structures — these, too, are an area of interest for O’Neill, in his fiction and in his life.

Since Donald Trump’s election, O’Neill has been intensely focused on political activism and the Democratic Party, “whose leaders were, I had discovered, too corrupt and/or strategically misguided and/or enfeebled by hackery to consistently beat the Republicans,” he wrote in an email. In the intervening years, he published a series of essays in The New York Review of Books suggesting how the party “could and should turn things around,” he went on. “Inexplicably, they don’t seem to have heeded my advice.”

O’Neill has a particularly elegant “foundation and vocabulary to think about political and aesthetic expression,” said the novelist Dinaw Mengestu, who directs the written arts department at Bard. This, along with his inherent ability “to be at ease and put people at ease,” helps encourage conversation about challenging or otherwise sensitive topics.

“At first I was deeply alarmed by him because I didn’t realize he was funny,” Mengestu said. “His natural mode is to be very playful, and by the time I caught up to it, it was a relief.”

Yet as much as O’Neill draws from contemporary life in his fiction, he sees a distinction between his novels and short stories and his essays. His books “are inevitably political, too, but I hope not in a didactic way,” O’Neill wrote. “One of the basic objectives of writing — or of painting, or making music — is to make an interpretable thing of language that will transcend one’s normal dreary take on the world.”

Sandy Tait, a friend of O’Neill’s who helps to fund and coordinate grass roots campaigns, put it simply: “You see the writer in his political articles as opposed to seeing the engaged citizen in his literary works.”

“There are just so many Joes,” Tait continued — Joes who are witty, clever and combative, but above all, someone who “believes deeply in fairness and justice, and can’t just sit on the sidelines.”

However mysterious or inchoate the story of “Godwin” seemed years ago, O’Neill has a cogent perspective on it now. He sees the writing co-op, he said, as “liberal democracy, a dream of the collective, whereas the Wolfe side of it is more buccaneering, dealing with capitalism, neocolonialism.”

Mark’s globe-trotting allows the story to touch on Benin’s legacy of slavery, the exploitation inherent to professional sports, racism — some of the ugliest possibilities in the realm of human behavior. Yet it’s Lakesha, the novel’s avatar of idealism, who gets the book’s first word and also its last: “There is so much to look forward to.”
