Engineers with PhD's... How much do you make?

Hi everoyne!

Let me start by saying, I love doing research.

I'm about to start a PhD in chemical engineering and I would really like to hear about how much I can expect to make once I'm done.

While money isn't the main factor in my life, I'd be laying if I said I don't care at all about it. All the jobs I can find online for PhD's are pretty much postdcos with salaries around 65K. In contrast, I've got a job offer for 85K a year right now.

So basically, if I do go to industry with a PhD, how much can I expect to make? What about 5 years and 10 years after getting the PhD?

Average Engineering Salaries

What is an engineering degree worth? Year after year, engineering jobs in the United States and abroad are paid the highest average starting salary .

How Much Do Engineers Make?

Engineers get top pay. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in May 2023 engineers had a median annual wage of $91,420 , which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $48,060. The engineering field projects to have faster than average employment growth 2022 to 2032 with nearly 188,000 openings created each year. One thing is certain: engineers will continue to play a major role in shaping the world of tomorrow.

So how much do different engineering careers pay? Review average engineer salaries by specific discipline or field:

Engineering salaries can vary widely based on factors other than the type of engineering field. Additional factors include job location, experience level, education, and the specific industry or company. The bottom line: it is well worth the time and effort it takes to become an engineer.

Additional Engineering Salary and Career Information

The occupations on the US News and World Report's Best Engineering Jobs list are diverse and offer good salaries.

See the list.

Engineering degrees took nine of the top 16 rankings for college majors with the highest income five years after graduation, according to a recent New York Federal Reserve study of full-time workers.

See the top 16 majors.

"Overall employment in architecture and engineering occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032. About 188,000 openings are projected each year, on average, in these occupations due to employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupations permanently."

Read Outlook Handbook

"It's no surprise that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors are the top college majors by salary, but that doesn't mean that we discourage students from studying majors in the humanities, social sciences, education or arts. In fact, some of those majors lead to high-paying careers as well—it just often takes a longer time for those graduates to reach their prime earning potential."

PhD Salaries and Lifetime Earnings

PhDs employed across job sectors show impressive earning potential:

“…[T]here is strong evidence that advanced education levels continue to be associated with higher salaries. A study by the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce showed that across the fields examined, individuals with a graduate degree earned an average of 38.3% more than those with a bachelor’s degree in the same field. The expected lifetime earnings for someone without a high school degree is $973,000; with a high school diploma, $1.3 million; with a bachelor’s degree, $2.3 million; with a master’s degree, $2.7 million; and with a doctoral degree (excluding professional degrees), $3.3 million. Other data indicate that the overall unemployment rate for individuals who hold graduate degrees is far lower than for those who hold just an undergraduate degree.” - Pathways Through Graduate School and Into Careers , Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and Educational Testing Service (ETS), pg. 3.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports higher earnings and lower unemployment rates for doctoral degree holders in comparison to those with master’s and bachelor’s degrees:

According to national studies, more education translates not only to higher earnings, but also higher levels of job success and job satisfaction:

“Educational attainment – the number of years a person spends in school – strongly predicts adult earnings, and also predicts health and civic engagement. Moreover, individuals with higher levels of education appear to gain more knowledge and skills on the job than do those with lower levels of education and they are able, to some extent, to transfer what they learn across occupations.” - Education for Life and Work (2012), National Research Council of the National Academies, pg. 66.
