This was a systematic review of experimental and quasi-experimental studies that have examined the effect of nursing interventions on the QL of patients with an ostomy. A systematic literature review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. [ 24]

The literature review revealed that, similar to our study, written educational materials [14], ostomy self-management training [15], self-efficacy enhancement [16], self-management [17], self-care management [18] and multimedia educational programs [19] were found to improve self-efficacy and promote self-care skills in patients with ostomies.

Bare et al. ( 2017) identified that they were able to effectively implement an ostomy algorithm tool throughout a system of over 300 home health care centres. Kalashnikova et al. ( 2011) also described large‐scale use of an ostomy algorithm tool, although, only in one centre. The tool was utilized with 1,427 patients.
