This chapter begins with the definition of corpora and corpus analysis, and rationales for corpus-based instruction, followed by the synthesis of representative empirical studies. After presenting an overview of these studies from the aspects of context and participants, writing task and technology, theoretical framework, methodological approach, research questions, and validity/reliability strategy, this chapter discusses multiple research strands in terms of thematic categories: (1) corpus analysis of textual features, (2) corpus-based writing instruction, (3) learner-corpus interaction, (4) effect of data-driven learning on writing development, and (5) perceptions. This chapter ends with research directions and pedagogical recommendations (i.e., selection of corpora and training on the use of corpora).
