The generation gap is one of the trending issues of current times. It is considered a cause of conflicts between parents and children. It is even believed that the generation gap is destroying families. Hence, it becomes essential for everyone to understand this issue and spread awareness about the same.

Hello and welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to present a speech on the Generation Gap.

The generation gap refers to the differences between the opinions of different generations. This gap is very natural. But sometimes it creates difficulties between people of different generations such as parents and children.

On the one hand, parents complain that their children don’t listen to them. On the other hand, children feel that their parents don’t understand them. This creates a bad environment for families and family members avoid communicating with each other.

But healthy communication is the only solution for this type of issue. Children must understand the thought process of their parents and present their opinions accordingly. Also, parents need to give thought to what their children want to convey before judging. Thank you!

I warmly welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to deliver a speech on the generation gap. Before I start my speech, I would like to wish you a good day. Also, I want to thank you for giving me this valuable opportunity.

Our thought processes, opinions, ideologies, interests and beliefs are way different from that of our parents. This is because we are born in a different generation than our parents. This difference in ideologies and beliefs is called the generation gap.

Due to the generation gap, a lot of conflicts arise between people of different generations. Each generation wants to impose its ideas onto the other generation. None of them wants to understand the other’s perspective and views.

Most conflicts are seen between parents and children. A sense of superiority drives parents to control their children and make them do what they want. Parents think that they are right and children think themselves to be right.

It is needed to understand that there is nothing right or wrong. Right or wrong is only a perspective. Someone perceives something as wrong while another thinks it to be right. Hence, before announcing right or wrong one must give deep reasoning to it.

The generation gap is creating various conflicts and clashes in families. This is because of arguments involved in communication. This is a bad way of communication. Communication is not about proving yourself right. But one needs to listen to others carefully and try to understand the other’s perspective.

Without healthy communication, this gap can not be bridged. Both generations can present their views to each other without any argument and try to give thought to each discussion. This will help to align with others’ perspectives.

To sum it up, the generation gap is not a bad thing as long as you know how to deal with it. Thank you!

These are some of the lines of a quote Socrates wrote 2400 years ago. This proves that conflicts between the ideologies of two different generations are not a new concept which is today called the generation gap.

Good morning! All of you. Before heading ahead to my speech on the generation gap, I would like to wish you all the best and also want to thank you for giving me this valuable opportunity.

If we observe deeply, it also exists between two people of the same generation. Is the generation gap a reality or a myth? What do you think? Well, I believe it is just a conflict of different thought processes. Each one has developed his thought process differently.

Our thought process is a result of many aspects of life such as the way of upbringing, the environment in the family, the company we choose, the society we live in, the activities we indulged in and many more. Hence, this gap is intrinsic.

It is difficult to fill this gap completely but good communication skills can help a lot. One should improve his interpersonal and intrapersonal communication skills to win this battle.

In a family , parents and children can present their ideas to each other without any argument. After that, each one must brainstorm over another’s ideas and understand the positives & highlight the negatives of it. This will bring clarity of thought for both of them.

To sum it up, there is no issue which can not be resolved with a wise strategy. This is all I want to share with you. I hope you liked it. Thank you!

For instance, we have seen that with time, the term generational gap was to describe the perceived distance between young people and their parents or grandparents. We can view it from several angles, starting with modifications in language usage, working methods, and even fashion sensibility.

Generation And Outlook On Life

Every generation has its own methods for solving problems and ways of looking at the world. But since we are continuously changing with time, our perspectives and the way we approach issues will also change. I say this change in quantities over time to be a generation gap. It typically occurs when two people with different birth years have divergent viewpoints or opinions on the same issue.

Experienced individuals, or what we might refer to as people based on their experiences, develop a wiser outlook on life, which the current generation regards as outdated thinking. As a result, older generations frequently give the impression of being more firmly rooted and set in their ways. This, with time, creates a lag in our relationships, creating a distance between individuals.

The generation gap refers to this change that caused two generations to think differently from one another. We refer to the difference in beliefs and values between two people born in different decades as the generation gap. The perceptions of our generation and those of our parents differ. Every generation has its own way of doing things and going about life, and each has experienced its fair share of difficulties.

Impact Of Generation Gap

The generational gap has impacted our lives. Lot of factors caused the generation gap, including differences in interests, technological advancements, religious and political views, and others, besides age. It is incorrect to assume that the generation gap exists between parents and children, as it also exists between employees and teachers and students.

As a factor to consider, when children reach adulthood and form opinions and analogies, it frequently results in disagreements between their interests and those of those in the generation older than them. These differing viewpoints and ideas could very well cause a rift between them if they are not communicating effectively. Because of a lack of respect for the other person's opinion, these disagreements frequently result in violent altercations and the breakup of families and friendships. These conflicts are not only common in homes but also in workplaces and educational settings where the person in charge refuses to recognise the contributions of their underlings.

Why is the idea of a generational gap still present after all these events? The generational gap thus has advantages of its own besides these. As a natural phenomenon, the generation gap offers us new and creative ways of thinking. The various perspectives that people hold, offers various angles of view, which solve any minor issues and make everything perfect the way it is. Another way to put it is that the generation gap occasionally proves helpful to humanity.

Resolving Differentiating Generational Views

Even though there are more problems than benefits, we can bridge the gap between the two generations by accepting and understanding one another. Parents should interact with their kids and foster a positive relationship. They must support the kid's efforts to discover their identity. The child should confide in his parents and talk to them about any issues they encounter. If this kind of mutual trust, understanding, and acceptance is established between both parties, we can deal with the generation gap effectively.

I came face to face with this gap when I was in 10th grade. I enjoyed doing things my way. It gave me working with my friends to create a theoretical structure for our group project. I requested help from my father on my part. He started building the model in his own way, and I told him that was the wrong way to do it, even though I had no bad intentions and never meant to hurt him. I worried that he might have taken offence at my words and thought I was disparaging his methods, but, after I understood, I sat down and patiently explained my ideas to him, which he took positively, and we successfully finished building the model together.

To reduce the generation gap, communication should be the initial step. Lack of communication between parents and kids leads to this gap. You should talk to your parents about your daily routine, feelings, etc. By doing so, you can bridge the gap between you and your parents, which will help you to become more attached. The feeling of affection will grow stronger.

2. Spend time with your parents

Kids should spend quality time with their parents to understand each other better. They can spend quality time watching a match together or going for an evening walk. This will surely help you get closer to your parents and bridge the generation gap. You can even make your parents learn new games and play with them someday.

3. Share your problems

You should share your problems with your parents to help you with solutions. Initially, they might scold you, but at last, they will support you and suggest some solutions.

4. Show genuine gestures

Effective gestures often prove to be successful and can convey more than words. It can be a gift to your parents on their birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s or Father’s Day, etc.

5. Act Responsibly

So today before I begin your regular course work, I would like to deliver a brief speech on Generation Gap. It is a very critical issue because I see many students experiencing that gap with respect to their teachers. Let me tell you students that we do understand your age and what you may like or probably dislike. But do you students ever try to adapt yourself according to the people around who are elder to you. Probably not, right! It is every important to respect that age gap and eventually the generation gap that naturally comes in when people from different age come together. Two people don’t have to be necessarily at odds with each other all the time as they can try to understand each other’s thought process and way of looking at things and learn something from each other in the end.

Not everything that is old or belongs to the previous times is bad and everything that is modern is worth embracing. One should be sensible enough to make a clear distinction between what is worth embracing and what is worth leaving behind.

Generation gap is something that you can never escape as wherever you will go you will find people from different age group and school of thoughts. The gap between today’s youth and old people is referred to as the generation gap. While the youth is inexperienced, impatient and aggressive, the elders on the other hand have cultivated patience, prudence and wisdom. They are comparatively found calmer and work with a caution. This phenomenon of generation gap is not something new as it has been very much there since ages.

The people who come from older generation always look at the young generation with skepticism. They are not able to relate with the younger generation. They feel that their time was the best time as young people used to value their elders and used to be more obedient towards them. There was a belief that disrespecting your elders would cause irreparable damage to the family. On the contrary, in today’s times the youth believes that excessive dependency on their elders is dangerous and they should be self-sufficient to do anything they want to. Young people dislike spoon feeding by their elderly people in the family.

This gap between the new and old generation is increasing day after day because of many reasons. Primarily, the youth of today feels that the current education system holds very little relevance in the real palpable world. It is not aimed towards getting a job. The outcome comes out to be such that after finishing the schooling, they realize that they are not fit for any job. They become extremely disheartened.

Secondly, life has become so fast-paced that parents have little time for their kids. There are lack of efforts being put towards developing understanding and intimacy between the young and the old generation.

Thirdly, the youth finds a great difference between what is expected out of them and what is actually the reality of our country. The discussion on dedication, duty, morality, etc leaves the youth in a great dilemma. The youth of today is not ready to blindly accept whatever their elders will teach them. When the youth finds that corruption and politics have entered every sphere of life – they are filled with disgust. They are always ready to put up a fight against social and economic discrimination. So they seriously want to see a change in society.

And, I hope that the transformation brought by our younger generation will only be for good and perhaps will try to evade corruption from every sphere of life.

First of all, very good evening to all of you! Today, other than discussing our day to day issues, I have also prepared a speech on generation gap which I am going to address now. As everyone knows, very recently sad news went viral which said that a young boy out of frustration hit his father so hard that he had to be hospitalized. This news made me really think hard about what is happening to the young generation of today. Is it entirely their fault or is it the fault of their parents too that they fail to give a good upbringing to their children and never try to understand their thinking process?

Let’s as parents ask these pertinent questions to ourselves and try to bring a positive change in our society and also try to come to terms with our children’s way of thinking. But at the same time, it is very important to inculcate in our children moral values and good ethical behavior. They should be taught right since their childhood to respect their elders and give love to their younger ones. If we will start maintaining a distance from our children both physically and emotionally, then their life will suffer from a great emotional loss and they will become insensitive towards everyone around, especially elder people.

We should try to bridge this gap rather than making it wider and wider because it is already so wide that the young and the old people are already seem to be living in two different worlds without being bothered much about each other. If you want to overcome this generation gap, then as elders we will have to resort to a sympathetic approach towards our young ones or children and try to understand what they may like or dislike, their desires and aspirations. Also, the youth should realize that they do not have any experience in life. It, therefore, becomes important to listen to your elders and what they have to say. They have a wealth of experience which you can benefit from and make your life better and worth living. The youth should patiently listen to their elders and take their counsel in every important decision of their lives. If the youth disagrees at any point, then they can calmly and with respect put forward their opinion.

In foreign countries like America and Europe, the generation gap is so huge that the young and old people do not like to even live under one roof. The young people begin to lead their lives independently the moment they start earning. Likewise, the old people also begin to live separately either in their own houses, in age old homes or in Pensioner Houses. Therefore, this generation gap leads to the break-up of joint families and homes.

We should try not to bring the situation to this extent where Indian families refuse to live under one roof and break apart. Let’s impart good values to our young generation so that they do not go away from their roots and remain grounded. That’s all I can say!

As a principal of this school, I feel responsible towards these children and I am putting my sincere efforts in shaping their future. Besides their education, I want to ensure an over-round development of their personalities so that they grow up as mature individuals who can keep their moral values intact and never divorce from them.

So this step, i.e. organizing interactive sessions between the parents and teachers, is a step towards the realization of this goal. No parents or teachers would want their children to disrespect them or develop a sense of alienation. However, whether we believe or not the phenomenon called generation gap is a universal phenomenon and is seen to be taking place in almost every family across the globe in some way or the other.

Irrespective of the fact whether parents and children are living under one roof or not – they are not sharing a great communication level. Either there is a very less or no conversation. Children and their parents or elders for that matter have their own different ways of living their lives. Children find their parents too imposing, dominating, and preaching whereas parents find their children too stubborn, impatient and violent. How can relationships go smooth in such a situation? Or, how can the very foundations on which families are formed can become strong, if the wide generation gap will continue to grow?

I come across various incidents of child abuse or children becoming violent day by day and do not even hesitate in retaliating against their elders. So many news make round these days where a son kills his father for property or a daughter commits suicide, etc. These horrible news actually give a reflection of our society and sends out a strong indication where our society or next generation is heading towards. As mature, grown-up people, we should try to bring a change in our society and this change can only be brought on a large scale, if we begin changing our families and the mindset of youth living in our surroundings.

As elders, we should not always be rigid towards our children and try to understand their perspective too. Their thinking process would be different, but not wrong all the time. We can act as their friends, guide and mentor rather than all the time behaving strict with them as their parents. We should try to be a part of their small world that they build for themselves and try to know about their wishes and desires. If we take a step towards understanding them, I am sure they will also take another step towards bridging this gap. This way we can bring a positive change in our society and effectively channelize their energy towards the right direction. The actual meaning of generation gap is a high level of incompatibility between the new and old generation. It is the responsibility of both the generations to respect and understand each other’s opinions. Only then this gap can be filled and peace and harmony can be reinstated.

Today's Generation Gaps

The Pew Research Center study found that 79% of Americans see major differences between younger and older adults in the way they look at the world. In 1969, a Gallup Poll found that a slightly smaller percentage, 74%, perceived major differences.

Today, although more Americans see generational differences, most do not see them as divisive. That is partly because of the areas of difference. The top areas of disagreement between young and old, according to the Pew Research Study, are the use of technology and taste in music. Grandparents are likely to have observed these differences in their grandchildren who are tweens, teens, and young adults.

If large differences between the generations exist, why don't they spawn conflict? The answer is twofold.

First, the two largest areas of difference— technology and music—are less emotionally charged than political issues. As for the musical differences, each generation wants its own style of music, and the older generation generally can relate to that desire.

A different survey by the Pew Research Center identifies "increasing acceptance of gays and lesbians" as a particular area of difference, with almost half of those up to age 49 seeing it as a good thing, but only 37% of those aged 50 to 64 agreeing and only 21% of those 65 and over.

When you become an adult I am sure that you will also feel a change in your attitude and start seeing things from the point of view of your elders.

On the contrary, in today’s time the youth believe that they should not depend excessively on the elders and they should be self-sufficient to do everything by themselves. Young people dislike following the advice given by their elders in the family.

This gap between new and old generation is increasing day by day due to many reasons. Mainly the youth of today believe that the current education system holds little relevance in the real clear world. It is not aimed towards getting a job. The result is that after the end of schooling, they know that they are not suitable for any job. They get very disappointed.

The pace of Second Life has become so fast that parents are able to take out little time for their children. Efforts are being made to develop understanding and intimacy between the younger and older generations.

Thirdly, the youth know what is the real situation of our country. The discussions on dedication, duty, morality etc. have put the youth in a big dilemma. They are not ready to blindly accept whatever their elders will teach them to the youth of today. When youth come to know that corruption and politics have entered every field. Because of which they are always ready to fight against social and economic discrimination. So they seriously want to see the change in the society.

And I hope that the change brought by our young generation will be only for the good and will probably try to remove corruption in every field.

Dear Society Members – As the Secretary of our Gokuldham Society, I welcome all of you to my Society Club House Meeting!

First of all my greetings to all of you! Today apart from discussing our day to day issues I have prepared a speech on Generation Gap which I am going to address now. The recent news that everyone knows, which went viral, said that a young boy in despair hit his father so hard that he had to be hospitalised. Hearing this news, I felt so strange that what is happening to today’s young generation. Is it entirely their fault or is it also their parents’ fault for failing to raise their children well and not understanding their thinking process?

Let’s ask ourselves these pertinent questions from the perspective of being a parent and try to bring about a positive change in our society and mix our thinking with the thinking of our children. But at the same time it is very important to sow the seeds of moral values and good ethical behavior in our children. They should be taught from childhood to respect their elders and love their younger ones. If we start keeping distance physically and emotionally from our children then their life will suffer a lot of emotional pain and they will become insensitive towards everyone especially the older ones.

We should try to narrow this gap instead of widening and widening it because it is already very wide where young and old people are already living in two different worlds without disturbing each other much. If you want to bridge this generation gap then as elders we have to resort to a sympathetic approach towards our youth and children and try to understand what they like or dislike as well as their desires. And you also have to know the aspirations.

Young people should also realize that they have no experience in life so it is even more important to listen to their elders. They have a wealth of experiences that you can take advantage of and make your life better and more valuable. Young people should listen to their elders and take their advice on every important decision of their life. If youth disagree on any point they can express their opinion calmly and with respect.

In foreign countries like America and Europe, the generation gap is so big that young and old people do not even like to live under one roof. When young people start earning money they want to start their life independently. Similarly, the elderly also live separately from the youth in their old homes or pensioned homes. Therefore, this generation gap leads to the breakdown of joint families and homes.

We should try that the situation does not reach such an extent where the Indian family starts living separately under one roof. Let us provide good education to our young generation so that they do not go away from their loved ones and stay connected with them. That’s all I wanted to say!

Dear Parents – Welcome to the Parents-Teachers Meeting! Hello everyone!

Being the principal of this school, I am responsible towards these children and I am sincerely trying my best to shape their future. Apart from their education, I want to ensure their complete personality development so that they can grow up into mature individuals who do not distance themselves from them by maintaining their moral values.

So this step i.e. conducting interactive sessions between parents and teachers, is a step towards the realization of this goal. No parent or teacher would like to disrespect or alienate their children. Though whether we believe it or not, what is called generation gap is a universal phenomenon and is observed in almost every family across the world in some way or the other.

Regardless of the fact whether or not the parent and child are living under one roof – they do not share a good communicative level or have very little interaction. Children, their parents or elders have their own different ways of living. Children see their parents as strict, intimidating, and disciplinarian while parents see their children as brash, rude and violent. How can a relationship be good in such a situation? Or on what basis families can be formed. How can it get stronger when the wide generation gap continues to widen.

I get to hear many such news every day where various incidents of child abuse or children do not hesitate to take violent action against their elders. There are so many stories to be read where a son kills his father for property or a daughter commits suicide. These horrifying news really gives a reflection of our society and gives a strong indication of where our society or the coming generation is heading. As mature and experienced person we should try to bring change in our society and this change can be brought on a large scale only when we start changing our family then mindset of youth living in our environment changes .

As adults, we should not always be harsh towards our children and try to understand their point of view as well. Their thinking may be different from ours but cannot be wrong all the time. Instead of treating them harshly we as their parents, their friends, Must act as guide and mentor. We should try to be a part of their little world which they create for themselves and try to know about their wishes and desires. If we take a step towards understanding them, I am sure they will take a step to bridge the gap. In this way we can bring about positive changes in our society and channelize our energy effectively in the right direction. The real meaning of the generation gap is a high degree of incompatibility between the new and old generation. It is the responsibility of both the generations to respect and understand each other’s opinion. Only then can this gap be bridged and peace and harmony can be brought back.

2 Minute Speech On Generation Gap In English

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on the generation gap. The generation gap refers to people having children at various ages. We can also comprehend how one generation differs from the next. Humans have evolved and become more developed than past generations as the times have changed. The Generation Gap is a result of this.

Relationships between children and their parents have been shown to suffer as a result of the generational divide. In order to create strong bonds of love and happiness within families, it is crucial to close this gap. We are only able to fully appreciate the lovely relationships that God has given us by bridging this gap with our parents.

If both generations make an effort to comprehend one another’s perspectives and attitudes, the generation gap can be easily bridged. Parents ought to make an effort to always be cordial with their kids. Children should also follow the wise advice that comes from their parents. Each parent and child should have faith in the other. The youth should also ask their parents for guidance and allow them to do so.

In conclusion, By establishing a cordial relationship, parents and their kids can aid in bridging the generation gap. Parents must support their children’s efforts to discover their identities. The child must have faith in his parents and communicate any issues that arise. We may effectively deal with the generational divide if mutual trust, understanding, and acceptance are built between the two parties. Thank you.

Maga turns against the constitution.

You may not know this, but the United States is in the grips of another crisis — perhaps its greatest crisis of all. In addition to confronting a recession, a collapsing stock market, unemployment rates at a 50-year high and skyrocketing crime, the Constitution itself is now essentially dead. It’s broken. It failed, and unless there is revolutionary change, the nation we love is lost forever.

Welcome to Joe Biden’s America.

Sharp readers will recognize immediately that nothing I said above is true. The economy is growing , the stock market is at historic highs and the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low . That doesn’t mean the economy is perfect. Inflation and higher interest rates have caused real economic pain, but the American economy is still, as the EconForecaster economist James Smith recently said, the “ envy of the world .”

Crime in America is too high, especially compared with the rest of the developed world. But crime rates have dropped after pandemic-era increases , and overall crime rates are substantially lower than they were in the relatively recent past: Violent crimes and property crimes are occurring at less than half the rates they were in the early 1990s.

Yet countless millions of Americans simply don’t know any of these facts. According to a recent Harris Poll, 55 percent of Americans believe the economy is shrinking, 56 percent believe that the United States is in a recession, 49 percent think the S&P 500 stock index is down for the year and 49 percent believe — incredibly enough — that unemployment is at a 50-year high. An overwhelming majority of Americans (77 percent) believe that crime is rising — one of the most pessimistic assessments in a generation.

If you’re a Democratic strategist, the perception gap between opinion and reality is a profound political problem. It’s hard for a presidential incumbent to win re-election when so many Americans are so deeply discontent, and these same strategists are confronting a political party that has every incentive to magnify American problems. Republicans want a stink of failure to surround the Biden administration.

But the problem of public ignorance and fake crises transcends politics. Profound pessimism about the state of the nation is empowering the radical, revolutionary politics that fuels extremists on the right and left. In fact, absent catastrophic alarmism, the MAGA movement would never have come close to power.

The fundamental argument on the Trump right since 2015 has gone something like this: If America isn’t a failed state, it’s at least a failing state. It’s an economic and military paper tiger that has rejected God, can’t tell male from female, and is lapsing into a state of chaos that only a strong leader can confront. He, alone, can fix it.

But MAGA is frustrated. The Constitution blocks Trump from doing what must be done. It blocks him from seizing the level of control that the far right believes the moment requires. And so now, for parts of MAGA, the Constitution itself is part of the crisis. If it doesn’t permit Trump to take control, then it must be swept aside.

Elements of this argument are now bubbling up across the reactionary, populist right. Catholic post-liberals believe that liberal democracy itself is problematic. According to their critique, the Constitution’s emphasis on individual liberty “atomizes” American life and degrades the traditional institutions of church and family that sustain human flourishing.

Protestant Christian nationalists tend to have a higher regard for the American founding, but they believe it’s been corrupted. They claim that the 1787 Constitution is essentially dead , replaced by progressive power politics that have destroyed constitutional government.

Still others believe that the advent of civil rights laws created, in essence, a second Constitution entirely , one that privileges group identity over individual liberty.

The argument that the Constitution is failing is just as mistaken as the argument that the economy is failing, but it’s politically and culturally more dangerous. Reversing a crime wave doesn’t require us to abandon the Bill of Rights. Achieving economic prosperity doesn’t require authoritarianism. But if your ultimate aim is the destruction of your political enemies, then the Constitution does indeed stand in your way.

Right-wing constitutional critics do get one thing right: The 1787 Constitution is mostly gone, and America’s constitutional structure is substantially different from the way it was at the founding. But that’s a good thing, and the actual written Constitution that exists today, the document that’s been formally amended 27 times, is very much alive, and its guardrails against tyranny remain vital and relevant today.

The original Constitution and Bill of Rights, while a tremendous advance from the Articles of Confederation, suffered from a singular, near-fatal flaw. They protected Americans from federal tyranny, but they also left states free to oppress American citizens in the most horrific ways. The original Constitution permitted slavery, of course, and the Bill of Rights, which includes protections for religious liberty, free speech and due process, restricted only the federal government, not the states.

Individual states ratified their own constitutions that often purported to protect individual liberty, at least for some citizens, but states were also often violently repressive and fundamentally authoritarian. Through much of American history, various American states protected slavery, enforced Jim Crow, suppressed voting rights, blocked free speech, and established state churches.

As a result, if you were traditionally part of the local ruling class — a white Protestant in the South, like me — you experienced much of American history as a kind of golden era of power and control.

The Civil War Amendments changed everything. The combination of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments ended slavery once and for all, extended the reach of the Bill of Rights to protect against government actions at every level, and expanded voting rights.

But all of this took time. The end of Reconstruction and the South’s “ massive resistance ” to desegregation delayed the quest for justice. It took the 19th Amendment to grant women the right to vote, but decades of litigation, activism and political reform have yielded a reality in which contemporary Americans enjoy greater protection for the most fundamental civil liberties than any generation that came before.

And those who believe that the civil rights movement impaired individual liberty have to reckon with the truth that Americans enjoy greater freedom from both discrimination and censorship than they did before the movement began.

So why are parts of the right so discontent? The answer lies in the difference between power and liberty. One of the most important stories of the last century — from the moment the Supreme Court applied the First Amendment to state power in 1925, until the present day — is the way in which white Protestants lost power but gained liberty. Many millions are unhappy with the exchange.

Consider the state of the law a century ago. Until the expansion of the Bill of Rights (called “ incorporation ”) to apply to the states, if you controlled your state and wanted to destroy your enemies, you could oppress them to a remarkable degree. You could deprive them of free speech, you could deprive them of due process, you could force them to pray and read state-approved versions of the Bible.

The criminal justice system could be its own special form of hell. Indigent criminal defendants lacked lawyers, prison conditions were often brutal at a level that would shock the modern conscience, and local law enforcement officers had no real constitutional constraints on their ability to search American citizens and seize their property.

Powerful people often experience their power as a kind of freedom. A king can feel perfectly free to do what he wants, for example, but that’s not the same thing as liberty. Looked at properly, liberty is the doctrine that defies power. It’s liberty that enables us to exercise our rights. Think of the difference between power and liberty like this — power gives the powerful freedom of action. Liberty, by contrast, protects your freedom of action from the powerful.

At their core, right-wing attacks on the modern Constitution are an attack on liberty for the sake of power. An entire class of Americans looks back at decades past and has no memory (or pretends to have no memory) — of marginalization and oppression. They could do what they wanted, when they wanted and to whom they wanted.

Now they don’t have that same control. It’s not just that Catholics and Protestants have equal rights (a relatively recent development), it’s that Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, Buddhists and atheists all approach the public square with the same liberties. Drag queens have the same free speech rights as pastors, and many Americans are livid as a result.

That’s not to say that the Constitution is in perfect health. I’ve long been alarmed at the rise in presidential power. The growth of the administrative state undercuts Congress’s constitutional role in American democracy , and I have my problems with a number of Supreme Court doctrines, but I don’t for a moment think the Constitution is dead or fundamentally broken, and I certainly don’t think the answer to any of our problems is recreating anything like the Constitution of 1787, which permitted so much human suffering.

The topic of disinformation has rightly dominated much of our public discourse, but if anything the focus has been too narrow. Yes, vaccine conspiracy theories are deeply destructive. So are election conspiracies. But when a movement starts to believe that America is in a state of economic crisis, criminal chaos and constitutional collapse, then you can start to see the seeds for revolutionary violence and profound political instability. They believe we live in desperate times, and they turn to desperate measures.

I’m reminded of one of the most famous admonitions of scripture — “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” So much American angst and anger right now is rooted in falsehoods. But the truth can indeed set us free from the rage that tempts American hearts toward tyranny.

Some other things I did

On the day of the Trump guilty verdict, I joined my colleagues Michelle Goldberg and Patrick Healy for a special edition of the Matter of Opinion podcast. We discussed both the legal and political aspects of Trump’s conviction. I’d encourage you to listen to the whole thing, but in particular I found myself expressing my concerns about what happens if Trump wins the election. If you thought you’d seen MAGA devotion to Trump before, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet:

He’s been found liable for fraud. He’s been found liable for sex abuse. He’s been found liable for defamation. Now he’s been convicted as a felon. If he wins anyway, the religious zeal around Donald Trump will be something to see. If we think that there has been a Trump cult already, if he wins in spite of all of this, the Trump cult will be — we will have seen nothing yet, is what I would say. And the level at which he would feel empowered to execute his objectives of vengeance — it would get truly scary, truly scary.

On Sunday, I took a break from Trump conviction commentary to focus on the First Amendment . The American Civil Liberties Union represented the National Rifle Association in a case contesting Democratic censorship, and Justice Sotomayor wrote an opinion for a unanimous court supporting the free speech rights of the N.R.A. The consistent defense of civil liberties can make for strange bedfellows indeed:

I’m a gun owner, but I’m not a member of the N.R.A. Whatever it once was, it is now thoroughly radicalized and strikingly corrupt . But no matter how much any person may despise the N.R.A., I’m reminded of the dialogue between William Roper, a young lawyer, and Sir Thomas More , the English chancellor who was executed for defying Henry VIII, in Robert Bolt’s “A Man for All Seasons.” More and Roper are arguing over whether the Devil himself gets the benefit of the law. Roper says that he’d “cut down every law in England” to pursue Satan. “Oh?” More replies. “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?” The Bill of Rights was ratified more than two centuries after More’s death, but it’s the legal answer to More’s concern. If you diminish the First Amendment to destroy your political opponents, then when your opponents gain power (and they will), you’ll have nowhere to hide.

JACKI O’NEILL: Hi, I’m Jacki, and I head up Microsoft Research Africa, Nairobi. Welcome to the Microsoft Research Forum. I’m going to talk about the importance of building globally equitable generative AI.

Given its ability to generate and process human-like natural language, generative AI is set to transform the way we interact with technology. Like the graphical user interface before it, generative AI promises to make computing and AI more accessible to a wider range of people. This promise encompasses several features. Their natural language interfaces mean users can interact with these models conversationally. They can ask questions, give commands, and get tasks done. This can lead to a reduction of complexity across applications and devices as one can imagine navigating through and creating content using natural language without having to open different applications to find and extract information or even know which tool that content was created in. Given this, LLMs could reduce the burden of repetitive and nonessential tasks—from helping us craft email to summarizing documents and supporting report writing—giving us more time to focus on the work we love. Finally, multi-modal interactions with image, speech, and video processing and generation further enhance the transformational power of these tools, all of which could make both the power of AI specifically and that of computing more generally much more widely accessible, including to a mobile-first or mobile-only audience, thus reaching the billions of people who don’t work at desks.

As a result, generative AI is likely to transform the future of work across the globe in ways as yet unimagined and has sparked excitement about its potential impact on the Sustainable Development Goals. However, generative AI may not be equally useful for everyone, and its impact will not necessarily be evenly distributed globally, across regions, communities, or demographics, and as a consequence, there’s a risk of compounding existing systemic inequalities. For example, those that can most benefit from the promise of generative AI include populations in the Global South, who’ve been previously excluded due to both the traditional digital divides and the AI divides. The traditional digital divide has three levels, including access to digital technology, having the skills and knowledge required for their effective use, and the ability to translate use into desired outcomes. Generative AI then brings additional elements to the digital divide. The AI divide encompasses the socioeconomic conditions around who gets to create, deploy, and benefit from AI. The data divide refers to the consequences of not having good representation and equivalence in the training data and data-related processes, such as labeling and reinforcement learning. And the third divide is compute given the GPU requirements to build, train, and deploy these immense and immensely powerful models.

So how does generative AI impact these divides? Well, it reduces the traditional divide in some ways because natural language interfaces mean AI is more accessible to more people than ever before. For example, this latest generation of general-purpose off-the-shelf tools can and are being deployed to improve productivity by businesses around the globe, including many small businesses who were previously excluded from the AI revolution because they just didn’t have access to machine learning professionals in their companies. In terms of devices, many of the current AI tools can be used on smartphones, although they do require data. But there’s a plethora of specific feature-phone services which are being created in areas such as health and agriculture which don’t require the end user to have data. Whilst it’s too early to definitively talk about the ability to translate use into outcomes, research on small and medium businesses’ adoption of generative AI in Kenya and Nigeria suggests that it provides value for those who start using it in a number of use cases, such as writing emails in English.

The AI divides however remain, and there’s much work to be done to arrive at globally equitable generative AI. Today, I want to focus on the data divide, which stems from the fact that the vast majority of training data comes from the English-speaking Global North. This has an impact on the representations of both language and of knowledge in AI systems and consequently on their ability to process and produce appropriate output. But what does this mean in practice?

Let’s start with a look at language. Last year, research has shown that when compared to state-of-the-art non-autoregressive models, or SOTA models, on standard NLP tasks—natural language processing tasks and benchmarks—those SOTA models outperform large language models, including GPT-4. Large language models tended to work well on high-resource language families with Latin scripts but less well on low-resource languages with limited training data or non-Latin scripts. However, generative models introduced new challenges for NLP benchmarking, many of them due to prompt sensitivity. That is, even small changes in the prompt construction can impact performance, making consistent benchmarking difficult. For example, even asking the LLM to provide explanations for its output can change performance as does the choice of examples used in the prompt. Nonetheless, currently, African language performance on traditional metrics isn’t yet at a par with English performance. But this doesn’t tell the whole story.

In naturalistic interactions, GPT-4’s performance seems pretty amazing. For example, in a collaborative project with the University of Washington Global Health Department, we’ve been looking at building NLP, or natural language processing, tools to support medical facilitators. These facilitators manage peer support groups on WhatsApp for young people living with HIV in informal settlements in Nairobi. The data consists of chat messages in English, Swahili, and Sheng, a local dialect, and includes code-mixing, emojis, and “chat speak.” You can see an example of the data here. This message contains a mixture of English and Swahili code-mixing with its translation by human annotators. We found that even the best multilingual SOTA models performed so badly even after fine-tuning, that we stopped working on this project. Then, along came GPT-4, and suddenly, these tools seem possible again. What’s going on? Why are NLP benchmarks telling us one thing about African language performance and application-based practice telling us another?

Well, one part of the explanation is that previous models typically just couldn’t handle code-mixing, whereas generative models are much better equipped to handle natural language. Therefore, they’re not only able to handle naturally produced code-mixed language, but they can also handle chat speak with its abbreviations, colloquialisms, emojis, and so on. Now, we found that whilst both GPT-4 and LLaMA showed impressive results in sentiment analysis on this dataset, GPT-4 appears to use more of the whole context of the sentence to produce slightly more robust predictions. Returning to our example, if we assume some correlation between explanations and prediction, we can see that GPT-4 gave more nuanced predictions, whereas LLaMA did not seem to pick up on the more positive, although conditional, sentiment in the second part of the sentence.

Despite these impressive advances, there’s still plenty of work to be done. There are still many under-resourced African languages where performance lags far behind. For example, the models make more mistakes on Sheng, which is not included in the training data, and speech models lag behind, often failing at the code-mixing hurdle. This is important because voice interfaces are likely to be essential to enabling even broader access to AI. So this is an area of continued research for African and other under-resourced languages. But language is not the only concern. Whilst language is most researched, the widespread deployment globally of the latest generation of foundation models reveals another equally pressing problem. Models hallucinate, fail, or reproduce stereotypes in African and other Global South contexts.

On the positive side, we’ve seen adoption of text and text-to-image generation tools, generative AI search, AI-augmented design tools, speech generation tools by small businesses in Nigeria and Kenya from a range of sectors, including law, design, outdoor recreation, and retail. These businesses successfully use generative AI to support communication, especially being professional and polite and to the point in emails. A common example that we saw across sectors is illustrated here: how do I tell my client he’s four months late now to pay his fees, and I don’t want to sound rude? And we saw this across pretty much all of the small businesses where they needed customers to pay. They also used AI to support creative work, such as content creation and ideation and so on. They described how it helped save time. For example, it reduced the time for ideation. As an architectural designer said, “We would manually, kind of, like, bounce ideas off each other. … Arriving at 10 strong ideas would take two or three sessions, whereas now we get the same results in one.” Even the lawyers who charged by the hour wanted to reduce their mundane work so they could spend more time on creative work. They would have liked to deploy generative AI to reduce the time spent on small-case document review. As a senior lawyer said, “We could have spent that 15 hours on important things. Once the machine, the AI, had given us the report, we’d be thinking creatively now.” So far so good.

Problems often arise, though, when they want to use generative AI in work involving the African context, which—as SMBs in Africa—is quite often. Whilst generative AI can sometimes help to navigate cultural and contextual boundaries, it’s more likely to hallucinate when the proportion of training data is low—i.e., in most African context—and a whole host of problems starts arising, from accent recognition in meeting transcription to speech production. For example, the CEO of an IT company used voice cloning for training videos but found it gave her a British accent. And as she said, it “takes away from my originality, which is I’m not British; I’m Kenyan.” Or the poor context and consistency we’ve seen in image production systems creating unusable and sometimes stereotypical images of Africans and African landscape, not to mention the tendency to produce answers which neglect or misrepresent African people, history, culture, and knowledge. And even where information about Africa is generated, it often portrays the Western perspective. This was perhaps most clearly encapsulated by one of the lawyers, who explained, “Even if you put into the particular AI that you’re asking from a Kenyan perspective—while in Kenya, does this law apply?—they’ll reference the people in the US, which is insane because we have Kenyan authors; we’ve done the actual work.” Overall then, it can leave the feeling that generative AI is really Americanized.

This regional bias goes way beyond demographic biases like race, although it would be compounded by them. Whole continents and their knowledge are severely underrepresented, and this comes through clearly in use, both in usability and use cases that are directly impacted by this. Indeed, AI has a language problem, but just as importantly, it has a knowledge problem, and this is likely to compound existing systemic inequalities. But we’re at the very early stage of generative AI and the impacts it will have on work. This is a fast-moving field, and there’s an immense opportunity to take control of the agenda and build truly globally equitable AI systems. This requires ensuring that diverse contexts and applications, with their diverse datasets, drive the development of generative AI. We need to be intentional and embrace these approaches. Machine learning methods like fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG , are unlikely to work well if we don’t design and build for these diverse contexts from the beginning.

This is not something that any one group or company, nor any one discipline, can or should do on their own. This needs to be a collaborative effort incorporating different voices, different perspectives, and different disciplines working more closely together than ever before. And so just before I finish, I want to highlight one initiative that’s attempting to address some of the concerns raised: the African Health Stories Project.

This is a multi-institution, multi-country, multidisciplinary project. Microsoft Research is working with public health researchers at Stellenbosch University, human-computer interaction researchers at the University of Swansea, and machine learning and data science researchers at the University of Pretoria to create culturally appropriate and sensitive stories supporting good health behaviors. We will use generative AI to create interactive visual, oral, and text stories which enable patients to better understand how to apply health advice to their local circumstances. Together, as a multidisciplinary team, we will use this specific real-world application area to probe, evaluate, and extend the ability of generative AI to create situated and culturally appropriate content at the same time as addressing a real health need. Because it’s only by working together can we solve the challenges we face with generative AI at scale and, in doing so, capitalize on the opportunities these new technologies offer.

We have plenty of work to do, but now is the time to change the dialogue and change the direction of these new powerful technologies to ensure that they are globally equitable by design. Thank you.
