Pharmacy Personal Statement

My fascination in Pharmacy began when shadowing a Pharmacist on a hospital ward. It highlighted to me the complex yet essential role that Pharmacists have in selecting the dose of medication and dispensing drugs to patients but also tailoring a compassionate approach to each individual. I am excited to extend my knowledge of medicine and the molecules it is based on to ensure drugs are prescribed safely and effectively to patients.

The A-Level courses at Esher College have been a challenging but enjoyable experience. All three of my A-levels have included fascinating topics and contextual experiments. At AS chemistry, I particularly appreciated organic chemistry, discovering the reactions between alcohols and analysing data to identify an unknown organic molecule. I undertook a project in Biology, which looked at the treatment of HIV and Tuberculosis. Through this I am becoming increasingly intrigued about the development of new medicine and its place in an ever-changing world. Additionally, I have enjoyed my research in to the testing of new drugs on animals and the ethical issues surrounding this for my extended project to produce a valid and balanced argument.  I regularly read `The pharmaceutical journal` to keep up to date on recent drug development and medical breakthroughs. An article I read discussed the recent fall in the rate of antibiotic being prescribed and the importance of this fact in order to reduce bacterial resistance. This demonstrates the importance of precise drug prescriptions and the major influence a pharmacist will have on healthcare. Precision is one of the most important components when prescribing drugs to patients and my Mathematics A-Level has better improved my  numeracy skills.

I completed a ‘Chemistry Adventures’ week long course at college where we visited the ‘Welcome Collection’ in London and viewed two exhibitions:’ Medicine Man’ and ‘Medicine Now’.  I found these exhibits to be an eye-opening experience as they presented a range of ideas about science and medicine both now and in the past. As I previously mentioned, I completed a week’s work experience at St. George’s hospital in the Lanesborough Wing pharmacy in 2014. Whilst completing my work experience, I dispensed drugs in the dispensary and got the chance to interact with patients. This showed me the importance of effective communication between a patient and their pharmacist. I found this a rewarding and key experience when deciding on my chosen course.

Despite having a broad technical knowledge about medication being a central factor in a career in pharmacy, a caring nature is equally important. In 2013 I volunteered for the Woodcraft Folk at the Colliers Wood community centre. As a result of my hard work and dedication, I received a Jack Petchy award, which prompted me to continue with my volunteering at the community centre. Through achieving my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award I acquired orienteering and teamwork skills, which will help me when liaising with other medical staff on problems patients may experience.  My regular job at Sainsbury’s in Putney as a customer assistant has expanded my skill set even further. I have learnt how to deal with customer complaints, ensuring that every customer receives all the help they require. This experience has prepared me for work in the real world by improving my interpersonal skills and enabling me to deal with a variety of situations in the work place.

I am particularly interested in studying this course in a case-based approach to experience the relevant real life aspects of medicine and learn how chemicals can manipulate the various components that make up the human body. Moreover I am excited to learn the fundamental chemistry that underpins Pharmacy. I am looking forward to bringing my enthusiasm, interests and dedication to your Pharmacy course and wider university life.

I am keen to pursue BSc Pharmacology at University of Hertfordshire. Pharmacologists’ studies how drugs work in the body and use this information explore how the body itself functions. My four years’ work experience in pharmacy sector has laid a strong foundation in motivating me to acquire depth knowledge about drugs; in this manner I have become more conversant with drugs, generic and some side effect of most drugs; gain excellence communication skills in interacting with people from different cultural background. Moreover, I believe getting a chance to pursue my study career in this University will progress me both professionally and academically.

According to my research and understanding of the course I have found that this course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. In addition, the student will also have the opportunity to work alongside researchers, academics and other students which will enable students to learn new techniques in microbiology and blood analysis. Moreover, student will even have their own bespoke space for pharmacology investigations. The course will be assessed in small, supportive groups, based in real labs, equipped with outstanding industry technology which gives me the techniques of how to getting the grips with powerful data and analytical tools. However, my home countries’ organizational structures are mainly developed like UKs. Therefore, employers readily recognize and highly value UK degrees. I believe studying abroad helps students to learn new languages, appreciate other cultures, overcome challenges of living in another country and gain a greater understanding of the world. In addition, these are the requirements that modern businesses look for when hiring, and such traits will only become more important in the future. Moreover, studying abroad also offers a unique opportunity to learn what we know but from a totally different perspective. These are the things which have motivated me to pursue this course.

After completion of Senior School Certificate Examination I completed my Diploma in Pharmacy Technician from Bayelsa State College of Health Technology, Otuogidi, Ogbia Town, Nigeria in 2018. During this period of time from 2016 to 2018 I also worked as a Pharmacy assistant. Later on, I joined Kendo Investment, Nigeria as a Pharmacy technician. I am currently working with this company and it was fascinating experience for me to work with this company. All throughout my entire career, I have accumulated professional ability, useful knowledge, communication skills and analytical skills with various experiences. I have the capability of dealing even with complex technical issues with an analytical and professional approach. As of the moment, I am interested in learning all the related skills and knowledge from this course. For this reason, this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives. If I can successfully complete this course it will create a plat form for me to pursue different career opportunities such as Research Analyst, Sustainability Project Manager or PCR Analyst.

University of Hertfordshire offers Human Physiology with Pharmacology, Practical and Transferable Skills, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Core Biochemistry, Cell and Microbiology, Bioscience Research Methods, Principles of Immunology, Biology of Disease, Pharmacology, Genes and Genomes, Biochemistry for Pharmacology, Applied and Integrated Pharmacological Science and Project. I believe this course will equip me with the necessary knowledge and practical skills through the above-mentioned modules to perform my duties in this role effectively. Furthermore, as a UK graduate, I will be able to stand out among the vast number of national graduates, and this will increase my chances to be employed by a leading international company in my home country.

I am determined to study this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we get to study with only the national students. Furthermore the political chaos makes it harder for students to get the degree without any delay. On the other hand the UK has a great multicultural and diversified student community which is an opportunity for me to learn with lot of students from different nationalities. UK education brand is highly respected by employers in our country as UK degree prepare graduates with academic competencies, developed personal and professional skills that are imperative for organizational success. The transferrable skills graduates carry forward from UK are pivotal for transforming organisational growth and gain competitive advantages. This is also a reason to study again in UK. In a recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by iGraduate shows that 82% international graduates say that their UK degree are worth the financial investment and similar number of graduates say that they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. Nearly 83% feel that UK degree has helped them to get jobs. These aspects have driven my ambition to gain the degree from a UK institution.

Research pharmacy as a subject

Standing out from the crowd when it comes to your pharmacy personal statement means doing your research and really demonstrating your suitability, commitment, and enthusiasm in a convincing way.

It’s a professional course you’re applying for here, and it’s essential that you’ve gained an insight into the profession itself, ideally through a combination of background reading and, if possible, some personal experience too – even if it was just talking to a pharmacist, or learning about it through visits to university open days or relevant events.

Use your statement to reflect on:

• your perceptions of what the profession is about, and where you can see yourself within it
• the skills and qualities that will be required, both to study pharmacy and to practice it as a profession
• evidence of situations or activities where you’ve displayed some of these skills and qualities yourself

If you can express all this in what the University of Manchester calls 'a creative statement that demonstrates enthusiasm and commitment for the subject,' then, provided you’ve got what it takes academically, you should be in with a good chance of success.

What unis are looking for in pharmacy students

Interpersonal skills: 'Being a good pharmacist involves more than academic excellence. You need to be good at interacting and communicating well with people from diverse backgrounds. Anything that demonstrates this ability looks good in your personal statement,' according to Dr Karen Ball, principal lecturer and admissions tutor at the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at University of Portsmouth.

Understanding of the profession: tutors at University of Bath expect you to demonstrate:

• your enthusiasm and interest in pharmacy
• evidence of your understanding of the role of a pharmacist

This doesn’t mean telling them what a pharmacist does, but reflecting on what you’ve found out for yourself through your research and any relevant visits, volunteering, or work experience. What did you learn and how might you apply this knowledge to your future study?

Awareness of the skills you'll need: on its website, Aston University offers some examples of how the emphasis of a pharmacist's role has changed, and mentions some of the key skills for which you might want to show evidence in your statement. That's the kind of information you'll be expected to know.

Your wider reading: University of Reading reinforces that the best way to stand out from the crowd is through the way you explain what interests you about pharmacy, your comments on the relevant reading and research you’ve done, and/or the experience you’ve had.

Commitment to the profession: Cardiff University’s selectors are looking for evidence of this and will assess your suitability by the way you demonstrate and evidence your 'knowledge of the science and practice of pharmacy' through your 'background reading or work experience.'

Clear language: this is a field where clarity and accuracy are essential, so reflect this in the way you approach your personal statement. It needs to be logical and easy to understand. Don’t try to stand out by being too flash or overcomplicated.

Relevant work experience: admissions tutors at Keele University are keen to hear about any relevant experience, what you feel you’ve gained from it, and how it has helped you to understand more about what your future career in pharmacy might involve. See our guide to making your work experience count for tips on how to do this.

Relevant skills: reflect on any relevant skills you’ve gained in academic, social, or work settings, whether it’s teamwork, communication, leadership, caring for others, or how you balance work with relaxation. But don’t exaggerate this. Be mindful that tutors will also read your reference to see if it fits with what you’ve said about yourself in the statement.

Pharmacology personal statement example 1.

I am of Haitian descent and my country is one known for its harsh living conditions. There is a constant struggle for survival and poverty is an endemic burden. Despite numerous advances in technology, Haiti has remained the least-developed country in the Western Hemisphere. My parents moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands when I was four years old, in hopes of finding a better life for our family. Growing up, I watched both of my parents struggle financially, each one working at two jobs to provide for us. I have witnessed my mother's health decline as a result, making her life even more difficult. I have sat by her side, watching her take medication she will have to be on for the rest of life. There were days when the drugs that should have been her support left her struggling for breath, due to side effects. I have felt powerless watching her suffer, wanting to help her, but having neither the required knowledge nor the training to do so.

While in secondary school, I developed a passion for science, and, as a result of my mother's health condition, I also began to develop an interest in medicinal drugs and their effects on human metabolism. These combined factors made my decision to pursue a degree in Pharmacology, an obvious and resolute choice. I was determined to excel in my studies, and this led to my sitting and achieving creditable results in thirteen subjects in the CSEC examinations. My awards at graduation included Valedictorian of the graduating class, Outstanding Achievement in the Disciplines of Science, as well as the Police Award for the Most Disciplined Student. In order to achieve the goals I set for myself, I am pursuing Advanced Level studies in Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics. Although the complexity and volume of work are challenging, I hope to achieve the grades necessary for entrance to university. In addition to my A-Level studies, I am also a Senior Prefect and a Reading Mentor to junior students. These pastoral responsibilities have helped me to both develop my communication and leadership skills and appreciate the help of others. They also taught me perseverance and trustworthiness. Focusing only on academics would not have taken me this far. I have also attempted to balance my studies with my extra-curricular activities as a member of the Neo-Catechumenal community. I serve as a coordinator of the Youth Group at the Catholic Church. I was also a participant in the World Youth Day Pilgrimage to Koln, Germany, in the summer of 2005 and to Sydney, Australia, in the summer of 2008. All of the above experiences have enhanced my overall personal development, and helped me appreciate the importance of time-management. On a lighter note, I also enjoy playing softball and have participated in annual national tournaments with both my secondary schools. I found my work experience to be extremely meaningful and rewarding. I volunteered at two local medical clinics during my last two summer holidays. I was involved in a variety of medical procedures, observing operations, X-ray and mammogram procedures, and also assisted in the pharmaceutical and blood banking departments. Such experiences have further strengthened my decision to pursue a career in Pharmacology.

For the past thirteen years, the Turks and Caicos Islands have been my home and the source of many opportunities for my entire family. Presently, the Government is constructing two state-of-the-art hospitals, and the Turks and Caicos Islands will be in need of a large team of medically-trained professionals. Upon receiving the necessary medical training, it is my desire to return home to make a contribution to the medical services. Additionally, I will also be in position to aid the immense number of Haitians living on the islands. I share a common goal with them; that is, the active pursuit and fulfilment of a better life.
