Recent international policies promote international university cooperation and student exchange between countries worldwide. High-quality study and PhD degrees are made more available to students in order to create a global educational network, achievable through student and staff mobility. Career and research oriented programmes support international student development.

University cooperation enables students study worldwide, for instance in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States and provides ways of recognizing previous degrees. Different study options offer appropriate alternatives to students, depending on their preferred mode of study.

Many study programmes in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America are English-taught. The most popular international student destinations include the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, the United States, and more. However, these are not the only countries offering English-taught education. The rest of the world is full of endless study choices, from highly ranked to smaller, more specialized, universities.

PhD (postgraduate) Degrees

If you want further education beyond the undergraduate level or if you want more personal development or a career in academia, you could obtain a PhD degree. PhD degrees are postgraduate programmes that usually follow a Master's, MPhil or MRes, but there might be additional requirements depending on the university. Students are required to do their own research in a chosen topic. With the help of a supervisor, you develop knowledge and analytical skills in a specific or multidisciplinary field and you carry out independent research. The duration of a PhD degree differs per country and institution. Sometimes your own research is accompanied by work for the department such as giving seminars or small group teaching.

PhD students are required to study on campus under close supervision, but there are universities that accept students enrolled into a part-time distance education PhD degree. Studying on campus can also be full-time as well as part-time, in which case the part-time variant is normally twice as long as the full-time study.

Headshot of Abigail Lister

Today, though, students have a wider choice of business courses on the continent, with business schools offering top-quality education to students who prefer to stay closer to home for study.

There’s increasing demand for business programs such as the MBA, and as the youth population grows— 60% of the growing population of Sub-Saharan Africa is under 25—these business schools will be at the forefront of economic transformation on the continent.

There are 27 registered business schools in Nigeria, and some of these schools have gained international recognition for the quality of their curriculum and teaching. As a result, many Nigerian professionals are realising they can gain the same MBA degree for a much lower cost than elsewhere in the world.

So, here are the top 6 business schools in Nigeria, according to Eduniversal .

6. American University of Nigeria: School of Business and Entrepreneurship

The business school also offers a 100% online MBA program, which has four specializations: Hajj operations, HR, marketing, and finance and investment. Depending on whether you have a business administration background or not, the online MBA takes between 24-28 months to complete.

List Of Schools That Accepts HND For Masters In Nigeria

Are you looking for schools that accepts HND for masters in Nigeria? If yes, then you are at the right place. This article will give you some information about the top universities in Nigeria that accepts HND for masters degree.

The HND program is a two year course offered by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria. It offers students the opportunity to study for a master’s degree in various disciplines such as engineering, science, management, arts, law, etc.

The HND program is designed to prepare graduates for higher studies in university or other institutions of learning. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in their respective fields.

Schools That Accepts HND For Masters In Nigeria

There’s a general perception among average Nigerians that Bachelor Degree Certificates are more superior to HND degree certificate. Hence by implication, holders of BSc certificates are more superior to holders of HND certificates.

It’s no surprise why BSc  certificates  are widely accepted and respected by public and private establishments in Nigeria.

This has also accounted for the major reasons why HND holders want to get a masters degree.

In the Federal & State Civil Service, for instance, Bsc certificate holders are in most cases placed on a higher level and a step above an HND holder at the point of entry or recruitment into any Government Agencies.

Recently, a bill to remove all forms of inequality and discrimination between BSc and HND was presented before the National Assembly and many Nigerians are still awaiting its outcome.

In the meantime, as we expect the passage of this bill, there are a few masters programme you can do with your HND without needing to go for Postgraduate Diploma (PGD).

What is M.PHIL all about?

M.Phil masters of philosophy

Master of Philosophy, M.Phil in…..

Conditions when mphil is needed.

  • Where your transcript for a previous Master degree show poor academic performance. Presently, the Nigerian University Commision has stipulated a minimum of 3.5 grade point average at Master degree before anyone is admitted for a PhD. Anything below 3.5, you will be heading towards a M.Phil programme.
  • Course switch. In this case, a prospective PhD student seeks to switch between similar but different fields of study. A M.Phil is recommended. A good friend at University of Nigeria, who bagged a M.A in philosphy, but was dissatisfied continuing for a PhD in his specialization. Seeking a PhD in philosophy of education, which is quite similar, but an entirely different faculty, he enrolled for a M.Phil with hope of subsequently continuing at PhD.
  • Professional Masters to a PhD. This is also a switch but of a different kind. A candidate with a professional masters degree like a MBA cannot be directly admitted to a PhD. Professional masters degree lack the research component, hence postgraduate student need to be grounded in research.

Terminal and Non Terminal M.Phil

do you know of any state school in the east that does mphil/phd

No… Try DELSU or BSU

Hello, I have an MSc. With 2.3 from Unilag. Can I do an MPhil? If yes please suggest where

Hello Ike, you can study for a mhil anywhere you choose. Tell me your course, so I can get schools offering it

MSc.Statistics. I base in Ebonyi. Most of the adverts I saw online require a minimum of 3.0 cgpa for state school and 3.5 for federal

Your cgpa of 2.5 is very low, but I believe you still have a chance for mphil. in less competitive universities. Try FUAM makurdi

Hi. My name is kelvin and I have a Bsc Accounting and an MBA from the university of Jos. It seems that I may not be able to apply for PHD direct without MPhil. Is that correct? Or are there institutions that provide combined MPhil/phd or take MBA. Thanks

Hello Kelvin, 1. Yes, you can’t apply directly for PhD with MBA 2. All Federal Universities of good worth offer a Mphil/PhD .

I have my B. Tech at first degree, I also have MBA (Finance) at second degree and currently doing my PhD accounting. But in my place of work as academic staff are complaining about my MBA being a professional masters not academic masters. The question here is that: Can MPhil serve aacademic masters in my case? Or I have to go M.Sc?

Saidu, sorry for the late response. Your situation is unique and I wish we can interact to give you a better answer.

Yes, MBA is a professional master’s degree. If you had been admitted for a MPhil/PhD, the MPhil would serve since you have a previous master’s degree i.e MBA.

But if it’s a straight PhD admission, your career as an academic will be questioned

Hello Ayodele, I just finished my B.Eng in Electrical Engineering with 4.20cpga. I would like to study for masters but a little confused about MSC or M.Phil? Which comes first. Look forward for your reply, thanks.

MSc is first. Master of science. It can also be M.Eng. Masters of Engineering.

MPhil is a bridge to PhD

Hello sir, I have a CGPA of 3.8 for M.sc. at U.I. and I was advised to proceed to M.phil. I will like to know if this means I can’t further to PhD even after completing the m.phil or can I take same result to another school and then apply directly for PhD?. I am in the academics line. Thank you.

Hello Opeyemi, It means that you need a MPhil to continue PhD. Apply for a MPhil/PhD combined admission. When you meet the MPhil requirements, you continue at PhD

Thanks a lot sir. Can I have your phone number please?. Thanks

Send a mail to

Pls can we talk 07037089399 I also finished from UI

I am currently considering an offer for PhD degree admission from a foreign university in Paris, France but operated through an Institution here in Nigeria. Generally, I am in doubt as to the recognition status of foreign Universities/Certificates by NUC in Nigeria. Can someone help me out with list of Foreign Universities recognised by NUC?

Hello, can you mention the name of the University. I will help you with my research about the school

Good Day. Please i want you to check out HTIB ATLANTIS UNIVERSITY, Togo. For NUC accreditation.

Hello Destiny, I took time to make findings.

HTIB Atlantis is not accredited in Nigeria and Togo from the information available to me. Don’t have any to do with it.

Sir my experience is same with Opeyemi, pls can you drop your email address

I have a GPA of 3.35 at masters level Law at Unilag. Do you know of any private university that will accept me for PHD direct. I was told igbenidion will take me . What do you think?

Hello Ibiene, sorry for the late response.

Yes, private universities would gladly accept you.

Babcock, Afe Babalola ABUAD or Igbinedion as you mentioned

Mr. Ayodele John, you are very wrong on this. No private university takes anything less than 4.0 for direct PhD admission. Pls, check again.

Good day Sir. I finished with 3.17 at the Masters level from UNILAG. Can I apply for UNILORIN MPhil/PhD? Thank you for the quick reply.

Yes. Apply quickly.

UNILORIN Postgraduate Admission form is currently on sale

Good day sir, Please I finished with a CGPA of 3:35 from faculty of law, university of Lagos. What other university can accept my grade for mphil/phd?.

Hello, try University of Nigeria, Unijos or any state university

Hello, Apply to university of Nigeria, Unijos or other good state universities.

UI, OAU are very competitive and may not accept based on the grade point

Thanks for the counselling I also have a 58 score in my M.A program at OAU. How can this be categorized and can I further my academics for a PHD?

Hello Gbenga, you need 60% to proceed to PhD.

If your former department can accept you directly for PhD as a former student or apply for MPhil/PhD to any university

Actually I am very happy with this policy because it would offer many potential Ph.D applicants the opportunity to realize their dreams

With this policy, insha ALLAH i will obtain Ph.D in Public Administration because Firstly i have my Diploma in Public Admin, Bsc. in Public Admin, Masters Degree in Public Admin (MPA) i will now use the opportunity provided by this policy and enrol in to M.Phil program which is part of my journey toward obtaining Ph.D, Insha ALLAH.

Good evening Sir, I have Bsc. Ed in Business Education with the CGPA of 4.00. I want to further my masters in Measurement and Evaluation. Will I be given admission? Any recommendable university? Thanks in anticipation for your reply Sir

Yes, you would be given admission in measurement and evaluation. Although the department prefers people who are very good in mathematics and statistics.

M&E is in faculty of education and same with Business Edu., Your admission should be straight forward

Am ken. I am HND holder having MBA from Crawford university with CGPA 3.89 , can i proceed for PHD ?

You can’t proceed directly to PhD. If you had your HND is the same subject area, then you can purchase a MPhil/PhD form.

If you need more counseling and information, book for a clarity session. But it would cost you a token

I have a master degree inTheology with 64.4 points do i still need an M. Phil before my PhD?

Hello Mr John, Thanks for helping people out in situations like this. Please I would like to know if M. Phil. transcript is available for collection @ ui.

Good afternoon, I have HND (Statistics), PGD (Management), B.Sc (Economics), & MBA (Business Administration). I prefer to do Mhil/PhD in Economics, can I be given admission? Which University can you recommend within the South Western Nigeria?

You can check OAU, OOU or UNILAG

I have Bsc in Economics with CGPA 4.20 in EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY, ADO-EKITI .I want to know maybe I can proceed for my PhD through M.Phil in any university in Nigeria including University of Ibadan or OAU?

No. With a BSc, you would need a Master’s first.

MPhil is for those who couldn’t meet PhD entry requirements

1. Good day sir! Can i apply to any university for Mphil/Phd with a 2.55 CGPA 2.55 in science education? 2. Can i apply for my area of interest e.g Mathematics in my Mphil/Phd 3. Will i write exam in my Mphil to contimue for my Phd?

Your CGPA is low but you will surely get a MPhil/PhD admission.

Depending on the university, you might be asked to write an examination. Some university will require a proposal defence before continuing to PhD

So sorry sir! I forgot to say that i had the grade in M.ED ( SCIENCE EDUCATION ). Thanks and God bless. Please i need answer to this question sir. Well done for a job well done sir.

Can i go for MPHIL/P.HD with a 2.55 CGPA in masters level? Can i choose my intended area of specialization in P.HD e.g Mathematics in MPHIL level? Will i seat exam in MPHIL level to go for P.HD? Please sir i need answer to these question. Thanks and God bless for your quick response. Well done sir.

I have answered

I had 4.4 for M.Ed which is interpreted as Phil/PHd. My question can I change from adult education to other courses in education with this result. I will appreciate feedback. Thanks

Yes, you can change course since your Masters is in th same faculty. You might be forced to do a MPhil/PhD.

Confirm from the adult education department

I have CGPA of 2.98 in public administration, can I get admission for MPhil?

Quite low. Yes, you can get admission

can I be admitted for a direct PhD with a cgpa of 3.04 in M.Ed administration and planning

Top federal universities will not grant you a direct PhD admission. You might have to consider a MPhil PhD

Hello sir….. Weldone sir and I really appreciate your effort… I am a U I student, had my first degree in botany and graduated with 2.2. Now, I am doing my MSc in the desired course of mine, which is industrial microbiology, still in UI.. My plan is to study abroad and study any field in microbiology, eg mycology, industrial microbiology, etc And 7 point is used in UI 5-7 for PhD grade 4-4.9 for mphil/PhD grade So the question is that ? Tho we havent seen any results yet, but due to the fact that mcb is not my 1st degy it a bit tough but I am trying my best tho but, What if, I graduated with the 4.4-9 mphil/PhD grade Can I still gain scholarship abroad with it to do another msc ? And what are the probability of having mphil grade and ganing scholarship Thanks in anticipation for your answers

Nexford University FAQ

How is nexford able to provide affordable education.

We believe everyone deserves access to high-quality education, regardless of where they live. That's why affordability is at the heart of everything we do. Here's how we make it happen:

  • Mission-driven approach: We're a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). This means, while we are a for-profit company, our primary mission is to provide widespread access to affordable education.
  • Global focus: Our online model means we don't have the same overhead costs as traditional universities, allowing us to pass those savings on to you.

Will employers in my country recognize programs offered by Nexford University?

  • It should be accepted in the US as we are nationally accredited in the US by Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) . DEAC is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Acceptance of your credentials from NXU is still dependent on the receiving organization. It is the sole discretion of the receiving institution/employer whether or not they will accept the degree that you will get at any university.
  • What we ensure is that you can stand out in a competitive job market. We utilize competency-based education to ensure you are able to apply your knowledge to real-world situations rather than just spending time memorizing theory. You'll have a capacity to adapt and pivot, and walk away with highly portable skills.

We're also licensed by the Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) in Washington DC, and our courses have been certified by Quality Matters (QM).

Does WES evaluate Nexford degrees?

WES will evaluate Nexford degrees, however they will not say they are equivalent to a Canadian degree because we are nationally accredited in the United States by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission ( DEAC ).   DEAC is recognized as an accrediting agency by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation ( CHEA ). Most schools in the U.S. and Canada will do their own credit evaluations.

Can I apply for an MBA if I don't have a university degree?

You'll need an undergraduate degree to apply for the MBA program. Nexford University accepts applications globally. We understand that your qualification may not specifically say that you hold a bachelor's degree in your country, but it may be equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree. We'll be happy to have your credentials reviewed! Get in touch with our Admissions team to know if you are qualified: [email protected] However, your degree or qualification doesn't need to be in business or a business-related field. If you have a degree in another discipline, you'll take four 6-8 week Advanced Business Foundation courses. Here, you'll learn the baseline business skills you need for our broader MBA. Upon successful completion, start taking MBA core courses. If you have studied business before, you'll enter straight into the MBA and start taking your core courses.

What is the university experience at Nexford like?

Nexford's learning experience is unlike any other. Think engaging, interactive online learning that helps you gain the skills you need – fast.

Our online learning environment contains everything you need to learn at Nexford. It's where you'll take courses, chat with peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, track your grades, and access your faculty's calendars to book one-on-one sessions. It's also where you'll manage your enrollment, add courses, and pay your tuition.

You'll get access to your modules through Canvas, a learning management platform, and you can even take your learning wherever you go with the Canvas mobile app. Module materials include reading, videos, interactive elements, quizzes, and relevant case studies.

Live lectures are done by faculty once every two weeks or more often. Don't worry, these sessions are entirely optional, and you don't have to wait for them to progress in your learning or course — everything you need to complete your projects, assignments, or assessments is available through your modules.

Assessments are weekly, and you must meet assessment and project deadlines to progress seamlessly. We recommend you allocate a minimum of 15-20 hours per week to your learning at your most convenient time to achieve this. If you need additional support, our Learner Success team is available 24/7. They will also help you with transitioning to online studies, creating your study timeline, and goal setting.

Overwhelmed? Don't be! You'll get a full tour of the learning environment during orientation. You're in safe hands with us.

What's required for my application?

All applicants to Nexford’s MBA degree must provide proof that they completed a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution in business or a business-related field, or equivalent for international institutions, with a valid copy of their official diploma and transcript. If applicants are not able to provide these documents, they must submit an explanation in writing together with any supporting materials that might assist the university in certifying their graduate status. If you’ve graduated from an institution where the primary language of instruction was English, we will rely on your transcript to prove English proficiency. If your prior education was not in English, we’ll need to confirm English proficiency as part of our process to ensure you’re equipped to succeed at Nexford. How To Apply For Postgraduate Scholarships

Dear applicant, before you can be selected for any of the available scholarships for post graduates, you first have to apply for the scholarship you are interested in and submit all the required documents.

Although this may seem like an easy thing to do (which it is), a simple mistake can cause your application to be rejected by the organisation or university, so you want to do it right.

If you have applied for scholarships in the past and have been rejected, or are applying for the first time, this is how to apply for an online post graduate scholarship.

Application Process:

To apply for a postgraduate scholarship, these are the steps you should take:

Before you apply:

  • Do you research on the scholarship and find out all you need to know about it, in terms of how to apply (whether online or via email or post) and particular documents to submit.
  • Research the school you are applying to and find out documents required and also if you are to apply for the scholarship before you gain admission to study or after.
  • Check if you are eligible for the scholarship
  • Organise all the required documents needed for the application.
