Roadmaps are a fantastic way to illustrate your project’s timeline and milestones. Making a roadmap is easy in Microsoft PowerPoint. You can use ready-to-use templates to quickly set up a roadmap. Alternatively, create a roadmap from scratch using PowerPoint’s shape tools. This wikiHow article will go over what a roadmap is, using a template, and making two types of roadmaps from scratch.

Things You Should Know

  • A roadmap is great for illustrating a business project. It provides a clear, chronological path for your team.
  • Use a template in PowerPoint if you want to quickly create and customize an existing roadmap format.
  • Create a high-level or detailed roadmap from scratch if you want complete creative freedom over the organization of your roadmap.

What Is a Roadmap?

A Roadmap is a visualization of a business process, project, or strategy.

  • High-level roadmaps feature 4 to 6 stages displayed in chronological order. This type of roadmap is a good way to provide a broad overview of a project to your audience.
  • Detailed roadmaps show many project tasks and when they’ll occur. This roadmap is great for showing every step of a project to your team and stakeholders.
  • In this wikiHow guide, we’ll walk through a few ways to make roadmaps in PowerPoint. Take a look at our intro guide to PowerPoint if you want to review the basics.

Using a Template

Step 1 Double-click the PowerPoint icon on your desktop.

  • Some PowerPoint templates will have multiple slides featuring different roadmap formats in similar styles.

Step 7 Change the text in the template.

  • For example, if the template has headers that say “Milestone,” change these headers to your project’s key stages. This could be something like Planning, Analysis, Design, and Implementation.

Step 8 Optionally, edit other aspects of the template.

  • Text and shape placement. Click and hold a text box or shape. Drag it to a new location on the slide.
  • Text font. Click the edge of a text box to select it. In the Home tab Font section, choose a new font, size, color, or highlight for the text.
  • Shape color. Click a shape to select it. In the Home tab Drawing section, change the outline or fill color for the shape.

High-Level Roadmap From Scratch

Step 1 Choose 3 to 6 milestones for your project.

  • Click Blank Presentation . This is in the top left of the PowerPoint Home screen.
  • Click New Slide . You’ll find this under the Home tab in the Slides section. A drop-down menu with new slide options will appear.
  • Select Blank . A new slide will be created with nothing on it.

Step 3 Navigate to the Insert tab.

  • Click the text box button. The button is in the Text section at the top of the screen. This will activate the text box-drawing tool.
  • Click and hold anywhere on your slide. This will be where one corner of your text box starts.
  • Drag your cursor to draw the text box. Then, let go when you’ve drawn the text box size and shape that you want. (You can always edit the text box after letting go!)
  • To resize the text box, click and drag one of the 8 nodes on the textbox.
  • To move the text box, click and drag an edge of the textbox.

Step 5 Double-click the text box and type your first milestone.

  • To change the font, click the edge of a text box to select it. In the Home tab Font section, choose a new font, size, color, or highlight for the text.
  • To change the alignment, select an option in the Paragraph section of the Home tab.
  • To change the text box colors, go to the Shape Format tab. Change the Shape Fill and Shape Outline colors in the Shape Styles menu.

Step 6 Copy and paste the text box.

  • Right-click an edge of the text box if you’re currently typing in the text box. Otherwise, you can right-click anywhere in the text box.
  • Select Copy in the drop-down menu.
  • Right-click any blank spot on your slide.
  • Select the paste option with an “a” on top of a clipboard. This will paste a copy of the text box using the theme of your presentation.

Step 7 Fill in the new text boxes with your remaining milestones.

  • To add a photo, go to the Insert tab, click Pictures in the Images section. Select a photo from your device or PowerPoint’s stock image search menu.
  • To add an icon, go to the Insert tab, click Icons in the Illustrations section. Select an icon from the Icons menu.

Detailed Roadmap From Scratch

Step 1 Gather the key tasks you want to include.

  • A brief title for each task.
  • Approximately when the task will start and end.
  • What team is working on each task.

Step 2 Open a new blank presentation.

  • The columns will represent the timeline for your project. The column headers will be equally spaced times. For example, a year-long project starting in January could list January through December as the column headers. This would be 13 columns total — 12 for the months and 1 for the row headers.
  • The rows will represent different teams (or individuals) that are responsible for different key tasks. For example, you might have 3 teams: Design, Analytics, and Marketing. This would be 4 rows total — 3 for the teams and 1 for the column headers.

Step 4 Select Insert Table in the drop-down menu.

  • Click OK to confirm your settings and make the table. It will appear on your slide.
  • Resize the table to fill the slide. Click and drag the 8 nodes until your table fills most or all of the slide.

Step 5 Type the timeline column headers in row 1.

  • Click and drag to select the cells you want to edit.
  • Navigate to the Home tab to choose a new font size, color, and alignment so that the text is easy to read and matches the style you're going for.

Step 8 Navigate to the Insert tab.

  • Arrange the text boxes as needed. Click and drag the edges of the text boxes to move them. Place each key task in the column and row that corresponds with the time and team for the task respectively.

Expert Q&A

  • If you’re having trouble finding or selecting a specific text box or shape, open the Selection Pane. This will show a list of every object on your slide. Click the object’s name in the list to select it. The Selection Pane can be opened by going to the Home tab, clicking Select in the Editing Section, and choosing Selection Pane . Table of contents

What is a roadmap slide, best practice roadmap slides, examples and templates.

Roadmap slides are found in almost every strategy and consultation presentation , but they can have very different layouts and levels of detail. In this short post, we will explore various roadmap slides and offer a few tips and tricks for building your own.

Roadmap slides are visual representations of a strategic plan, typically used in presentations by consultants, businesses, and project managers. They function like a map, laying out the key milestones, goals, activities, and timelines for achieving a particular objective.

Common elements of roadmap slides:

  • Timeline:  A visual representation of the time frame involved, often using a horizontal line, graph, or columns.
  • Milestones:  Key achievements or deliverables that mark significant progress towards the goal. Milestones are typically represented with markers or icons along the timeline.
  • Activities:  The specific tasks or initiatives that contribute to achieving the milestones.
  • Goals:  The ultimate objectives the roadmap aims to achieve.

Roadmap slides vs. Gantt charts

While both roadmap slides and Gantt charts are commonly used visual representations of a plan, they typically serve different purposes.

A Gantt chart is a project management tool that assists in planning and scheduling projects of all sizes. It shows project timelines, tasks, and dependencies, making it ideal for detailed planning and visualization of complex projects. Gantt charts often serve as a shared blueprint for various departments, keeping everyone aligned and focused on their roles and overall goals.

Conversely, a strategy roadmap typically presents a broader, less granular plan focused on visualizing the steps toward a vision or goal. It helps clarify the "how" and "when" of achieving strategic objectives. Unlike Gantt charts, which follow a number of fixed design principles, there is a large degree of freedom regarding what a Strategy roadmap can look like (as seen in the examples below).

Utilize these three tips to ensure your roadmap slides are clear and engaging:

  • Find the right level of detail:  Tailor the roadmap's complexity and details to suit your audience. The more details you provide, the less likely people are to expect changes. Communicate detailed roadmaps with implementation teams, while broader timeframes and high-level activities might be more suitable for executives or shareholders.
  • Group activities:  Enhance understanding by color-coding similar features or related activities. For detailed roadmaps, consider grouping activities into 'workstreams".
  • Highlight Key Milestones: Mark significant milestones and achievements along the roadmap. Provide context by highlighting your current position on the roadmap. Illustrate completed items and remaining ones, painting a clear picture of progress and upcoming goals.

Crafting detailed roadmap slides takes time. Having a library of robust and flexible templates can speed up the process.

A Manager's Guide to Roadmaps Creation and Presentation

When you have a new project underway, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the overall scope of planning and the optimal execution sequence. Where should you begin? What timelines are realistic? How can I break down my vision for the team? These are the common questions managers have, and a roadmap is a tool many choose to turn the project pre-planning chaos into clarity.

Traditionally a road map is a navigational tool, showcasing all the roads in the area for motorists. But more recently, the “roadmap” term found a footing in the business world — specifically, in project management and software product design.

Thus, here’s a more business-oriented roadmap definition:

A roadmap is a high-level document, outlining the overarching direction of a planned initiative. Placed on a timeline, a roadmap specifies the main goals, steps, and milestones of the project.

Unlike more rigid strategic plans , a roadmap is an evolving document. It should be revised, updated, and improved as you move ahead with the execution or obtain new market data.

The underlying purpose of any type of project roadmap is threefold:

  • Serve as a reference point for main goals and objectives
  • Inform all project stakeholders about the important milestones
  • Communicate how short-term efforts align with long-term business objectives

However, you should remember that business roadmaps are more than project trackers or visual to-do lists . It’s a higher-level document acting as “a single source of truth” when it comes to making day-to-day lower-level decisions and determining the priority of various tasks and activities.

Ideally, a roadmap has to count on the following elements to achieve its functional purpose:

  • Strategic Alignment : The roadmap has to reflect initiatives, their why and how they were conceived, and how do those initiatives align with the product or business strategies for the organization.
  • Schedule: A group of goals without time estimation is just a dream in the air. Due dates for deliverables have to be listed, as well as contingency plans when a key deliverable does not meet the deadline.
  • Required Resources: This comprehends both human capital involved in the project, and physical and technical resources that help the organization fulfill its aspirations.

Remember, as a tool, roadmaps have to highlight graphic values. It is not enough to use words and, preferably, avoid their usage to not overpopulate the diagram itself.

Types of Roadmaps

Roadmap planning is a highly versatile planning technique, applicable across different industries and functions. Below are several common types of roadmaps, plus examples.

Product roadmap

A product roadmap is a reference document for the team, specifying product vision, direction, priorities, and development vector over time.  It is a key document for product managers and helps to understand where an organization wishes to be and the steps to complete that vision.

Product roadmaps are used in conjunction with marketing plans and business plans since they track the development of a product milestone by milestone.

As an example, we can check this video presentation by Airbnb of their product roadmap .

Technology Roadmap

A technology roadmap is a document or diagram showing the technology adoption, investment, and upgrades plan for a company.

Their implementation is meant to help organization leaders to plan when, which and why technologies will be onboarded into the company, preventing costly mistakes. Another application of the technology roadmap is to define when a certain piece of technology becomes obsolete and is due to be replaced.

Technology roadmaps can become immensely useful for companies transitioning into Industry 4.0 smart factory models.

A program roadmap is a visual reference showcasing the main planned activities for a specific corporate or public program. Unlike the earlier two examples, a program roadmap has a wider scope and can include several sub-roadmaps, pertaining to specific processes such as technology adoption, product development, marketing, etc.

High-Level Roadmap Project Timeline

In general terms, a Project Roadmap is a simple visual representation of the elements bound to happen during a project, with their own deadlines listed. The purpose of this type of roadmap is to keep project stakeholders aware of what’s going on at each stage of a project. It serves as an strategic overview for all the major elements that take part in the project.

Unlike a Project Plan, the project roadmap doesn’t go into such detail as in day-to-day task. Instead, it only highlights critical dates that are required for the project completiton.

To successfully create a project roadmap, we must include:

  • The milestones and the key objectives each one targets.
  • Deliverables and their relationship with the milestones.
  • Potential threats to the project, such as delays due to production shortage, a rival company releasing a similar product, etc.

The Agile Roadmap serves as an strategic planning tool, outlining the main elements to work, which and when deliverables are expected. Following the pillars of the Agile methodology , this tool brings transparency to the organization, for both teammates and stakeholders.

Aesthetics depend mostly on the team’s preferences, but overall they do resemble a Gantt Chart. These agile roadmaps help organizations to work effectively, creating task priorization and improving speed. Above all things, it is essential to determine which tasks have hierarchy rank over others in order to avoid unclear deadlines.

There are different types of Agile Roadmaps:

  • Theme-based agile roadmaps: In which tasks are grouped by theme.
  • Time-based agile roadmaps: It sorts tasks in swimlane diagram format within a date range. Particularly effective for measuring efficiency in sprints.
  • Progress-based agile roadmaps: Their structure resemble Trello boards with a correlation to a timeline. They work in coordination with kanban boards or similar models.

Must-known tips for creating an agile roadmap:

  • Build a reasonable narrative around your strategy. It helps so anyone can understand the purpose of your strategy and why your team selected the goals you track.
  • Be certain to set measurable goals. What can be measured can be analyzed later on for constant-improvement strategies.
  • Watch out for deadlines. Not every task requires a strict due date, so decide with your team which tasks can have a reduced pressure so the effort is placed on critical ones.

This particular kind of roadmap has gained relevance in the last decade as HR teams and career coaches use them to help people advance in their professional goals.

Unlike other formats, career roadmaps don’t have to be strictly formal in their graphics. Metaphors such as mountain roadmaps and lane roadmaps are often used to express that career development is a process that involves different stages, with individual challenges per phase. Ideally, they serve professionals to track the steps and deadlines required to take their career to a dreamed level. As a plus, a career roadmap can help students to attend admission interviews for colleges, exposing their views and ambitions in which they include the education degree they are currently applying for as part of that roadmap.

A career roadmap has to include your start point, your destination, and the steps required to meet that deadline. You can list alternate routes if you feel unsure of which career path to take in careers with multiple prospective paths (i.e.: graphic designers who can specialize in packaging design vs graphic designers who are generalists).

Strategic roadmap

We can create a stellar strategy for our company to increase its sales, but without an implementation plan, that hard effort is futile. This is where Strategic Roadmaps come into play.

Think of an strategic roadmap as the link between a strategy and its execution phase. Unlike other models, it doesn’t involve just a Gantt Chart model. The strategy roadmap exposes the what and the why for each action taken, so tasks must be listed according to their role in the overall plan.

Regarding marketing, it is vital to acknowledge the gap between a strategy tool – such as a marketing map – and its subsequent execution. For that very reason, marketing teams opt to incorporate Marketing Roadmaps as mediums to communicate the overall direction the team shall follow. These roadmaps for marketing are aligned with the company’s vision, and generally, they integrate groups from different disciplines.

To start creating your company’s marketing roadmap, you have to identify the audience that’s going to target. Understand their consumer behaviors, and the service they crave in terms of customer support, and then, group the objectives of these different parties:

  • IT department
  • Customer support
  • Marketing team
  • Product development team

Therefore, what should you include in a marketing roadmap? Start by laying out the goals and their respective timeframe. Any goal must be measurable. Initiatives from any department ought to take place, as they display key opportunities for growth. As a reference, make sure each initiative, task, or goal has a status next to it, so it is possible to measure its advancement as a sole element.

Go-to-Market Roadmap Template for PowerPoint

Roadmaps are a common output of broader strategic planning sessions. A solid roadmap is illustrative and action-oriented, breaking down the overall project vision into specific goals, steps, and checkpoints. All the subsequent project planning activities have to align with these.

A business roadmap typically includes:

  • Summary of vision — a succinct statement, summarizing the direction of the initiative.
  • Strategy summary — the actions you plan to take to achieve the set vision.
  • Goals — time-bound, scoped objectives you can measure with a metric.
  • Planned features or planned action — a deliverable-based step you plan to complete or a product feature you commit to launching.
  • Time frames — the timeline of when all planned actions must be completed. These can be an approximation.
  • Status markers — indicators of the progress made.
  • Metrics — measures you use to quantify the progress and determine if you meet the set goals.

Certainly, your roadmap planning template can have somewhat different elements, especially if it’s a field roadmap, created for a specific business process or sub-area. Likewise, technology and software roadmaps typically include more elements related to software development statuses, risk management, release plans, etc.

How to Create a Roadmap in 5 Steps

Building a roadmap requires some preliminary thinking. Do you already have a clear project vision and execution strategy? Did you collect market and custom data to prove or disprove your assumptions?

Then, how to create a roadmap for a presentation? You should begin developing a roadmap when you understand your market trajectory, pre-existing business constraints, expected end value, and ultimate company goals. If these are at check, you can then follow these step-by-step instructions.

1. Roadmap Planning: Think Needs, Over Steps

A roadmap is a condensed version of wider planning activities. It sets the vector and provides directions for people, responsible for execution. Thus, before you dive into the making, you should formalize your goals.

Forrester recommends:

“Your product roadmap should communicate what needs your customers face, the impact and value of addressing those needs, and what will be done to address those needs – not the technical details of how those needs will be addressed.”

If you lack the above customer knowledge or doubt its accuracy, be sure to:

  • Conduct a new market research
  • Collect and analyze the voice of customer (VOC) data
  • Talk to other team members and business stakeholders

Then use the obtained insights to create a list of SMART goals — specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound objectives for your project.

Example SMART Goals Slide design by SlideModel

2. Prioritize Your Goals

You know, have a list of goals. The next step is to prioritize and place them on a timeline roadmap. Most roadmaps cover a quartal or a year. Few go further than that since the market landscape changes fast and corporate goals evolve in tune with that change.

Thus, as you look at your list, try to organize all the goals into:

  • Short-term (weekly/monthly)
  • Long-term (quarterly/annual)

Then place all of them on a visual roadmap. Does your canvas look too crowded with many overlaps? Then you might need to group some goals into themes and prioritize them by strategic importance. Because as Karen Martin , author of “Value Stream Mapping,” says:

“When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.”

So pick your battles. The best way to prioritize goals on your roadmap is to revisit your project vision and think about which steps will take you the closest to meeting them. Also, if you are working on a product roadmap, consider the value different goals will create for current and potential users. Prioritize more customer-centric items.

3. Select a Business Roadmap Template Type

Because road mapping can be applied to a gazillion of different projects, there’s no universal blueprint for roadmap creation. This means you can experiment with different approaches and techniques, such as:

Gantt charts

Many managers like using Gantt charts templates (or lookalike roadmap slide templates) to create action-oriented roadmaps.

Product Roadmap Gantt chart PowerPoint presentation slide created by SlideModel

The definite appeal here is that your team can see all the planned activities, requirements, and timelines in one place. Plus, such charts make progress tracking easier.  Here is a list of Gantt Chart templates for PowerPoint & Google Slides presentations that you can download from SlideModel.

Timeline Roadmaps

If you need to create a high-level external roadmap for informing project stakeholders, a simple timeline usually does the job well. Essentially, such a timeline template informs about the planned activities, plus key time-frames.

Upswing arrows roadmap slide concept for presentations

Metrics-based Roadmaps

Many technology teams who need a greater level of granularity prefer using roadmap tools from popular PM tools such as Confluence. This is a good option when you need to pull off specific details from planned Sprints or software development backlog. Likewise, road mapping also comes in handy when you need to create a work breakdown structure (WBS) for your project.

Example Work breakdown structure slide design for PowerPoint roadmaps

Remember: You should always tailor the format, content, and presentation of your roadmap to your audience. A software development team may be fine with deciphering your release terms and metrics abbreviations in a product roadmap presentation. But the line of business leaders will be far more interested in timelines and concrete outcomes.

4. Set Success Criteria

Roadmaps feature important milestones and checkpoints which help ensure successful initiative progression. But to be effective, a roadmap (and its users) must have a clear definition of success and how it will be measured.

There are several types of metrics worth using for product roadmaps. Here is a short list of sales and marketing metrics that can help inform your product roadmaps.

  • Customer acquisition costs (CAC)
  • The average revenue per user
  • Customer lifetime value (CLV)
  • Customer satisfaction score (CSAT)

And for technology roadmaps, you may also want to track:

  • Number of features shipped
  • Team velocity
  • Work-in-progress
  • Sprint burndown rates

By using the right metrics, you can holistically assess if the progress is happening at the desired pace. If not, you can always tweak your timelines to make more realistic prognoses, plus identify potential blockers.

5. Stay Open to Changes

Roadmaps are never rigid. They will evolve depending on the market conditions, internal organizational changes, etc. So you must stay open to adjusting your roadmap based on the new information.

As part of wider change management activities, be sure to tweak all dependent processes and tasks on the roadmap, plus adjust the timelines. Then verify that all the proposed changes are aligned with the original project vision.

Alternatively, check our tutorial on how to create a roadmap in PowerPoint .

Teams and managers must be aware of the different requirements per project when it comes to selecting a roadmap tool. Since every tool is different, there are a number of options to check to create a professional-quality roadmap in no-time.

  • Microsoft Project: For those who require the typical Gantt Chart but do not need fancy graphics, Microsoft Project is a classic tool that can help presenters. Keep in mind you won’t be able to work with shapes and other formats as you would do with PowerPoint.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: This is a no-brainer. PowerPoint has in-built templates that lend a hand in creating different types of roadmaps. You can browse for more options by accessing the store available for Microsoft 365 Subscribers.
  • Google Slides: If you prefer to work in the cloud, or your budget is restricted, Google Slides is a free tool powered by Google. It works as an alternative to PowerPoint, from whom you can import Google Slides templates and docs, and make them work as if they were native Google Slides files.
  • SlideModel: But what if your work requires a creative flair? Many times, we’re rushing against a deadline, and this is where SlideModel’s roadmap templates can save the day. Choose from a broad range of solutions, tailored to the needs of presenters, and edit as required. You can change themes, colors, typefaces, icons, and the contents in placeholder areas. What would usually take a week of work designing elements is as simple as picking a template and editing it.

In case you want to avoid the hassle of going through a ton of presentation templates to create your roadmap slide deck, get to know a faster alternative thanks to the SlideModel’s AI Presentation Maker .

Presenting a Roadmap

A roadmap typically requires buy-in from two groups — stakeholders and executioners.

The first is interested in outcomes. This means you’d have to convince the stakeholders of your vision and show how your proposed roadmap fits into the company’s goals. The second group (executioners) wants to get a clear picture of the project direction and specific actions they’ll need to complete.

To satisfy the needs of both, you may need to first create and present a general strategic roadmap template and then move on to discussing lower-level field roadmaps.

In any case, to deliver a coherent roadmap presentation, be sure to:

  • Explain the general context (the why behind the initiative) first.
  • Remove jargon and buzzwords from slides, designed for business users.
  • Focus on substance and concrete outcomes at each stage of the roadmap.
  • Err on the side of pessimism, and over-optimism when showcasing timelines.
  • Clarify the business impact of completing the initiative
  • Stay honest about your assumptions. Don’t make promises unless you are 100% sure about delivering on them.

To Conclude

The purpose of a roadmap is to provide guidance. It’s not a detailed plan for execution, but your strategic vision, presented through a series of steps and milestones. PowerPoint Roadmap Template

Roadmaps are important tools in business communications. They’re ideal for keeping large and small teams on track. That’s why the lack of built-in PowerPoint roadmap templates can make it a challenge to create effective and engaging roadmaps.

While it’s possible to use templates designed for other types of charts, the best way to ensure you can build a product, strategy or project roadmap for your team is to use a tool like Venngage for Business and our Roadmap Maker .

We offer hundreds of professional, fully customizable roadmap templates that you can easily create and use in a PowerPoint presentation, with no design skills required.

Let’s look at some inspirational roadmap templates to get you started and share some of our favorite tips and tricks for effective business communication with roadmaps.

24 PowerPoint roadmap templates to keep track of tasks

Vertical PowerPoint roadmap templates

PowerPoint roadmap templates should include your company, product or project name at the top. Beyond that, the purpose of the roadmap should guide the rest of your decisions. Use icons, colors and fonts to create a logical flow of information.

roadmap in presentation

This roadmap slide template, for example, was created to organize and track the release of an app. Work is organized by version, and each version has its own color palette.

Pro tip: Breaking down huge tasks into smaller bits is a clever way to make projects manageable. There are 18 individual tasks needed to complete this product launch, but by sorting them into three release points, the goal becomes achievable.

roadmap in presentation

This marketing roadmap template organizes tasks using several methods, including dates, icons and colors. While this version is geared toward high-level communications, consider adding specific tasks depending on the audience.

roadmap in presentation

Roadmaps should be introduced at every step of the process, even during planning. That’s why a simple roadmap template PPT like this one is useful. The roadmap is broken down into phases, but the structure is loose enough to allow for change.

There’s no one way to create a roadmap, and PowerPoint roadmap slides can take many shapes and forms.

Don’t fear creativity; as long as your communications are organized, your product roadmaps will be useful rather than being confusing.

Here are a couple of versions that break the standard format.

roadmap in presentation

This simple PowerPoint roadmap slide takes a unique approach to explore strategy development. Colors and numbers keep the information organized.

roadmap in presentation

Incorporating interesting shapes into your roadmaps can help keep your team engaged. This half-circle roadmap template is a good example of how easy it is to dress up otherwise dry information using Venngage’s Roadmap Maker .

For any company, launching a new product or service is a stressful but exciting time. PowerPoint product roadmap templates can help keep large and small teams on track by making sure everyone is working from the same playbook.

roadmap in presentation

This product roadmap template was designed for a short product sprint, but it’s easy to customize it and extend the timeframe or add multiple teams. Note how it’s easy to see at a glance which tasks should be completed by month.

roadmap in presentation

A similar approach to the previous example, this product roadmap template organizes tasks across three teams over a six-month period. Color coding and icons are used to separate teams, tasks and time.

Pro tip: Be intentional with color choice. Consider different shades of the same color to group related items, teams or tasks.

roadmap in presentation

Even before you have an idea for a new product, you can use roadmaps to guide the development process. Customize this roadmap template so it applies to the goods and services your company sells. Creating a tried-and-true process for launching new products can make everyone’s lives less stressful.

Not every project your company has involves creating something new from the ground up. Roadmaps are important for projects of all sizes.

roadmap in presentation

Keep regular projects on time and within budget with a project roadmap template. Depending on how many teams are involved, consider keeping tasks high level instead of being overly specific. In this example, the marketing team doesn’t need to know all the steps involved in code review for the web team.

roadmap in presentation

Organize your workflows and projects with roadmap templates. This example could be easily customized to fit your needs, and icons can help signify what’s going to happen at each step.

PowerPoint strategy roadmap templates

Strategic discussions are also ideal matches for PowerPoint roadmaps. Roadmaps are effective organizational tools throughout the entire strategy development process.

roadmap in presentation

This strategic roadmap template PPT can guide your team meeting about the coming year’s growth strategy, or you can break down strategic discussions by quarter, as this example does.

Pro tip: When putting together a strategy presentation, consider adding charts and graphs. Data visualization is an ideal way to engage your audience and boost information retention.

Growth Goals Roadmap

Strategy PPT presentations don’t have to focus only on the short-term future. While you can assume every member of the team will be with you in 10 years, it’s a good exercise to build a 10-year strategy plan like this.

roadmap in presentation

Consider going literal with your strategic roadmap. Using visual metaphors related to travel like roads, cars or signs can inject energy into your PowerPoint roadmaps.

roadmap in presentation

Similarly, shapes like curves or circles are naturally enticing to the human eye. While this strategy roadmap could easily be organized into a straight line, adding the semi-circle shapes makes it that much more interesting, and unique visuals aid information retention.

PowerPoint technology roadmap templates

Roadmap presentations are standard in the tech industry, as team members must consistently work to create new products and support existing ones.

That’s why any tech company or other organization that works in the space should have several technology roadmap templates they can work with.

roadmap in presentation

Tech companies face constant pressure to launch something new while keeping existing products functioning perfectly. It’s often helpful for these organizations to separate the development of product features and updates well into the future.

roadmap in presentation

Creating an idea-development process is also critical for tech companies. In a saturated industry, it’s important to be sure the product pipeline is full of interesting new releases. Consider creating a roadmap for product or feature development.

PowerPoint agile roadmap templates

Agile is the project management technique preferred by businesses across many different industries. While it has its roots in software development, it’s been quickly embraced outside those confines.

roadmap in presentation

The agile method is renowned for providing maximum collaboration throughout a project. When creating an agile roadmap template, be sure all teams are represented. That will make it easy to see at a glance how teams might interact and overlap.

roadmap in presentation

Your agile roadmap slides should always match your company’s brand identity. This example may be more applicable than the previous one for organizations with a broader color palette.

Downloadable roadmap PowerPoint templates

With Venngage for Business , you can work on a roadmap design and collaborate with your team in real time or download them as PPT or PDF files. Once you find some roadmap templates you like, you can easily organize them for quick access later on.

roadmap in presentation

Many roadmap PPT templates focus only on the tasks that are needed, but in some cases, it’s helpful to keep specific goals top of mind for your team. In this example, revenue and sales goals are included alongside the steps needed to get there.

Release and Results Roadmap

Keep all members of the staff accountable and share victories by including names or photographs of individuals or team leaders responsible for each task.

So far, we’ve focused on PowerPoint roadmap templates that are horizontally oriented. But a vertical approach may be more applicable for your purposes. If so, keep in mind that the default settings in your PPT presentations may need to be changed to portrait .

Product Release Roadmap

Vertical free PowerPoint roadmap templates can help keep track not only of what tasks need to be done but which ones have been completed. Consider updating your roadmap weekly or monthly to be sure your team is well-informed.

roadmap in presentation

In the previous example, the events were all organized to one side. But depending on how many individual tasks you have, it may be better to place the timeline down the center and the content on either side of that.

Pro tip: If you’re organizing your roadmap with content that’s meant to be read from side to side, be sure it’s clear how the roadmap is meant to be read. Use numbers, large text, icons or other tools to avoid any confusion.

roadmap in presentation

Vertical product roadmaps don’t have to be long to be effective. This example could probably be condensed to fit within a horizontal layout, but by adding space between items, it’s easier to read and may feel less intimidating to team members.

roadmap in presentation

Here’s a different take on the same information. It’s easy to see how a few tweaks can really change the look and feel of a vertical roadmap template.

Additionally, in this example, the project phases are given names, which can help team members as they collaborate by giving them more clear language.

How do you create a roadmap in PowerPoint?

As we mentioned, PowerPoint’s SmartArt tools don’t include any graphics that are specifically for roadmaps. The platform does offer two stock timelines , and it may be possible to hack other process graphics into roadmaps.

The steps to create a roadmap in PowerPoint vary depending on the type you choose , but once you’ve decided on a basic structure, you can add dates or timeframes, modify colors or add icons to make sure the roadmap is organized and clear.

But Venngage’s Roadmap Maker offers much more robust tools to let you build creative and engaging roadmaps that keep your whole team on task. (Learn more about creating a product roadmap.)

Creating an efficient team means making sure everyone is working off the same playbook. Roadmaps for new product launches, projects or strategy development can engage teams and inspire collaboration.

How to Create a Professional Roadmap in PowerPoint

roadmap in presentation

A roadmap is a strategic planning tool that outlines the vision, goals, priorities, and major steps needed to reach a desired end state. Roadmaps are commonly used in business settings to visualize plans over time.

Creating a clear and professional-looking roadmap in PowerPoint requires some strategic planning and design skills. Follow these best practices to develop a roadmap that effectively communicates your plans to key stakeholders.

Gather Key Roadmapping Information

Start by gathering the following information that you’ll need for your roadmap:

  • Vision statement : What is the long-term goal or objective you want to ultimately achieve? Summarize it in 1-2 sentences.
  • Timeframe : What is the total timeframe for your roadmap? Typical strategic roadmaps span 3-5 years.
  • Milestones : What are the major milestones or achievement markers along the timeline? These are major accomplishments.
  • Goals/priorities : What are the strategic goals and priorities you want to accomplish in specific periods?
  • Major activities/steps : What initiatives, projects, and major activities need to happen to reach the goals?

Structure Your Roadmap

With your information gathered, think through the logical flow and layout of your roadmap across a multi-year timeline.

  • The vision statement normally sits at the top. This reminds people of the purpose of the roadmap.
  • Map goals and priorities to relevant time periods on the timeline. Group together initiatives contributing to common goals.
  • Sequence major activities and projects chronologically leading up to each milestone and goal.

Design Your Roadmap in PowerPoint

Now you’re ready to create the visual roadmap in PowerPoint. Follow these tips:

Choose a template

  • Start with a PowerPoint roadmap template or timeline layout to save design time. This gives you predefined placeholders for the key roadmap elements.

Set the timeline

  • Place a horizontal timeline across the middle to span the timeframe of your roadmap.
  • Mark periodic intervals on the timeline (e.g. fiscal quarters, years, etc.).

Add vision and goals

  • Insert the vision statement in a text box at the top. Format it in a larger bold font.
  • Place goals and priorities for relevant time periods in text boxes above the timeline.

Plot milestones

  • Mark major milestone dates and descriptions in icon circular shapes along the timeline.
  • Format milestones with icons and bold text for emphasis.

Show major activities

  • To indicate work needed to reach milestones, place rectangular shapes below the timeline.
  • Order activity boxes chronologically and connect with arrows following the sequence.

Apply styling

  • Use color coding to categorize goals, milestones and activities. This connects common elements.
  • Add stylistic elements like icons, borders, backgrounds and text formatting for visual appeal.

Finalize Your Roadmap

With your PowerPoint roadmap designed, follow these final steps:

Check alignment

  • Review the logic flow from activities to milestones to goals. Ensure alignment to the vision.

Simplify complexity

  • If needed, break the roadmap into multiple standalone slides for specific periods to reduce complexity.

Present roadmap context

  • On a separate slide, present the strategic context, drivers and assumptions behind the roadmap.

Add interactivity

  • Use PowerPoint hyperlinks from activity boxes to link to relevant documents or project plans for more detail.

Test and refine

  • Show the roadmap to stakeholders and implement feedback to improve clarity. Refine as plans evolve.

PowerPoint Roadmap Design Tips

Follow these best practices when designing your PowerPoint roadmap for maximum clarity and alignment:

  • Maintain clean layout : Use minimal text, align elements, and avoid clutter. Leave ample white space.
  • Emphasize importance : Make vision and milestones prominent with size, color, bolding and icons.
  • Use color strategically : Limit colors and use smartly to link common elements like goals and activities.
  • Write clear concise text : Craft short, descriptive headings for goals and milestones. Use verbs for activities.
  • Show progression : Sequence elements logically across timeline and connect with arrows to show progression.
  • Segment complexity : Break into multiple simple slides rather than one overly complex chart.
  • Update periodically : Review and update your roadmap as strategy and plans progress over time.

How to Create the Perfect Roadmap Slide (with Examples)

Table of contents, what is a roadmap slide.

A roadmap slide is used to illustrate the timeline for when you will deliver product features. They are typically used to answer the question “what will your product look like in the future?”.

Roadmap slides can have different levels of detail. Some roadmap slides group features into high-level phases (e.g., now/soon/later or now/within 1 year/after 1 year), whereas others will put specific release dates on product features.

Best practices and key characteristics

Roadmap slides are often very important slides, so ensure that they are clear and compelling with the following:

  • Select the level of detail based on the audience: The level of detail that your audience needs should guide whether you communicate specific release dates or group features into time-period “buckets”. Also remember, the more detail you give your audience, the less they will expect the information to change.
  • Communicate outcomes:  Instead of only talking about features or functionality, communicate the outcomes that those features will drive. For example, instead of “accounts receivable automation”, you could say “automatically flag when an invoice has been paid”.
  • Group features into themes: Make your roadmap easier to understand by grouping similar features into themes or categories (e.g. with the same color or icon).
  • Show where you are today:  Don’t forget to put your roadmap in context by clearly showing where you are today; in other words, what has been done and what is still left to do.

FAQs About Roadmap Presentation Templates

What is a roadmap presentation template.

A roadmap presentation template is a visual tool often utilized in project management and business strategy planning. This tool can outline timeline, strategy or a chronological order of activities and is often used to communicate the strategic direction of the business, or the planned steps to achieve a specific goal or complete a project.

These templates are designed with graphics or diagrams that outline a detailed path from the start of the project to its completion. They make it easier to illustrate and communicate complex information, project timelines, product development stages and other strategic planning details in a simplified and easy-to-understand manner.

What should I include in a roadmap presentation template?

A well-structured roadmap presentation template should include a timeline, which could be yearly, quarterly, or monthly depending on the project duration. It should also have a clear indication of key milestones, major tasks, and main objectives. Other items that could be included are resource allocation, potential risks, the scope of work and strategic initiatives of the project.

Remember your audience when designing your roadmap presentation. Make sure it's appropriate for its intended audience, which could range from project team members to stakeholders or clients. Provide enough detail for your audience to understand the project's progression, but not so much that it becomes confusing or overwhelming.

Why is using a roadmap presentation template important?

Using a roadmap presentation template is crucial as it helps to showcase the project’s objectives, priorities, respective timelines, and deliverables in a clear and precise manner. It promotes clear communication, keeping everyone — from team members to stakeholders — aligned on what the plan is and how it will be executed. This can help ensure all parties stay on the same page and foster better project management.

Another key to using a roadmap is in its visuals. Visualizing these aspects makes it more engaging and easily understandable as compared to text-heavy documents. This can lead to better comprehension, improved collaboration, and more efficient progression throughout the project's duration.

Are roadmap presentation templates customizable?

Yes, roadmap presentation templates are customizable and flexible to suit specific project needs. Templates are usually designed to be adaptable to a broad range of project types and timelines. Templates can be altered in terms of colours, layout, graphics and text to meet particular needs and to adequately reflect the nature and intricacy of any project or plan.

By customizing a roadmap template, a project manager or team can ensure it accurately represents their project's timeline, milestones and objectives. However, always remember to maintain the simplicity and clarity of the roadmap for seamless comprehension by all involved parties.

Where can I find reliable roadmap presentation templates?

Roadmap presentation templates are available from a number of sources. Software programs like Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and online platforms like Canva, Slidesgo, Venngage and more, offer a wide variety of customizable roadmap presentation templates. Choose one that fits your project's needs and is easy to edit according to your specifications.

When choosing a template, consider factors such as the duration of your project, the number of tasks, and the level of detail necessary in your roadmap. Make sure the structure and design of the selected template meet your needs and are easily understandable to your audience.

How to ace your roadmap presentation

  • Resources /
Roadmapping doesn’t end once you’ve built your roadmap. The purpose of your roadmap is to visualize a transparent plan across your organization .

To ensure your roadmap is effective (and actually, you know, executed), you’ll need to align each team in a roadmap presentation.

Basically, your roadmap is just words on a page (or screen or whiteboard or wall) until it’s been validated in some form of roadmap presentation or meeting. During a well-executed roadmap presentation, you have the chance to show stakeholders that you understand their motivations — and they have a chance to publicly affirm their alignment. But if your presentation flops, so might your product or marketing strategy.

Wanna learn about the entire roadmapping process from beginning to end? Check out our roadmap guide here to learn the definition, why roadmaps are important and how you can use them to ✨shine in front of your decision-makers

What is a roadmap presentation.

The most important point to remember before your roadmap presentation: this is not the place to get buy-in for your plans. That might seem contradictory. (After all, we just described roadmap presentations as an opportunity for stakeholders to “publicly affirm their alignment.”) But it should be just that: an affirmation of alignment that was already established prior to the meeting.

(If you’re butting heads over the alignment process itself, we’ve written about how to get roadmap buy-in from each department in our product roadmapping guide. And, more specifically, how to get buy-in from executives .)

A roadmap presentation is far more than the words you actually say. Think of it as an alignment exercise whose success depends on what happens before, during and after you take the stage.

This is an essential chance to understand stakeholder motivations and forge consensus before moving forward with your plans.

To get nuts-and-bolts-y, we’ve found that roadmap presentations generally fall into one of two categories:

Short-term updates

Taking place weekly or biweekly, these frequent syncs tend to get in the weeds, covering the particularities of what’s getting built and how that affects other departments. This type of sit-down would be more common on smaller teams. And because these catch-ups happen regularly, formal buy-in before the presentation is not imperative. But the roadmap still needs to be communicated prior to the meeting to avoid any major surprises or backlash.

Long-term updates

For bigger organizations and teams, the roadmap presentation will likely happen monthly, bimonthly or even quarterly. For these conversations, buy-in before the meeting is critical. These meetings can often involve high-stakes projects that rely on massive alignment and dependencies . Show up to your presentation without everyone on board, and you’ll probably leave feeling pretty beat-up.

Before your roadmap presentation: How to prepare

When it comes to roadmap presentations, the pre-game is just as important as the main event. There are three areas you should learn inside-out to ensure a productive meeting:

Know the high-level strategy

Let’s use a product roadmap as an example. You’re going to build feature X, Y and Z — but what’s the big-picture goal those features address? Without being able to speak to the high-level strategy — and the tradeoffs that must be made to prioritize within that strategy — everyone will just start asking for whatever is most advantageous to them. Be able to speak to product vision and company vision — and how your roadmap aligns with both targets.

Check out Roadmunk's free, ready-to-use product roadmap template and make it your own.

Know the stakeholders

We mean actually get to know them: their motivations, their deadlines, their pressures, what’s keeping them up at night. Again, trust is crucial . For example, marketing and sales needs to feel that product decisions are sound — otherwise they might go rogue. This won’t happen overnight. But it’s important to invest the time.

Know the resource constraints

One of the most common (inevitable?) pushbacks you’re going to get is related to time. “Why can’t we move faster?” To counter this complaint, it’s absolutely crucial that you have an inside-out knowledge of your resources at any given time. You must be able to clearly articulate the resources required to execute a given task — and the tradeoffs that will be made if you swap in something else. It can also be useful to discuss historical timelines, reminding the room of how long things have taken in the past.

During your roadmap presentation: What to actually present

There’s no one way to slice your roadmap. So what should you actually show during your roadmap presentation? We can’t tell you exactly how to build a roadmap that suits your particular organization ( that’s where our template library comes in handy ), but we do recommend that you aim to meet at least a few of the following criteria:

1. Flexibility: Does your roadmap distinguish between what’s planned and what’s still TBD?

2. Personalization: Does it address the individual needs of each department and/or stakeholder?

3. Collaboration: Can you iterate on the roadmap during the presentation itself?

4. Clarity + Attractiveness: Does it look good? Is the plan visualized in a clear manner? Don’t underestimate the power of good design .

Below, we’ve included some options for structuring your roadmap for your presentation. With a dedicated roadmapping tool like Roadmunk , you can easily create and present multiple pivots of the same data.

1. Flexibility

It’s helpful to communicate which initiatives are actually in the pipeline, and which are still subject to change. One of our favourite ways to structure a roadmap is to organize items by In Progress , Scheduled and Proposed . If your organization works on a timeline, you can simply colour code the items on your roadmap.

If your organization prefers to avoid timelines, you could also create a Swimlane View with the headers In Progress, Scheduled or Proposed.

Like the way this roadmap looks? It's a Roadmunk template. Check our library of 25+ templates .

We’ve found this roadmap structure very effective for reducing backlash during a roadmap presentation. Stakeholders get a clear and immediate visual indication of which features are actually committed, and which are still being decided. Overall, it means you’re less likely to hear knee-jerk peanut gallery protestations.

2. Personalization

As we mentioned above, it can also be effective to visualize ownership during your roadmap presentation. A great way to do this is to organize your roadmap by department or even by the individual responsible for each task.

The roadmap below includes the same data as the roadmaps above, but we’ve included subheaders indicating individual ownership over each project.

If you really want to get granular with ownership, you could create a Swimlane View roadmap that highlights department , resource or individual owner . This puts the focus on who’s doing what for which department — not the timeline.

3. Collaboration

There’s a reason why the sticky-notes-on-a-wall method is such an enduring way to make a roadmap: it’s easy to change things up on the fly. Although you’d ideally have buy-in for your roadmap before the presentation, your meeting will go much smoother if you are also able to update your roadmap during the conversation.

With a tool like Roadmunk, you can easily add comments or adjust your roadmap directly within the app during the meeting. This makes for a much more dynamic and participatory presentation.

4. Clarity + Attractiveness

The core purpose of your roadmap is to visualize your strategy and make it crystal-clear to everyone in your organization. “Make something pretty!” may sound trite, but you’ll undermine your end-goal if your roadmap is unattractive or unclear.

Obviously, the content of your roadmap is more important than the appearance of your roadmap. But it will be a lot easier to highlight key information — no matter how complicated — if your visualization is easy on the eyes. Also recommended: custom branding .

What pushback should you prep for?

No matter how much you prepare, there are some common points of friction that come up again and again in roadmap meetings. A great way to ace your presentation: prepare for the pushback before it starts pushing. Here are some common questions to expect.

Are you actually going to achieve this timeline?

You’ll most frequently hear this from sales or execs. They want to confirm that your roadmap is realistic so they can plan accordingly. If you have a history of late delivery, be prepared to address why this time will be different. (Then make sure you deliver.)

How can we scope this down?

Just because stakeholders are skeptical that you can hit your deadlines doesn’t mean they don’t want things to go faster. One way to ship features quicker: scope them down. Especially at startups, executives might push the “M” in MSP when they see scope creep getting out of hand. Be prepared to answer why you’ve scoped each feature to its current specs — and be flexible when it’s possible to scope things down.

What’s the value of this roadmap?

Don’t just speak to the qualitative value of each new feature. Be prepared with hard numbers. How will this roadmap help achieve your revenue targets? What specific clients or market segment does it address? You should be able to tie items on your roadmap to specific dollar-sign potential, and articulate value vs. effort.

What are the maintenance costs going to be?

The cost of maintenance is one of the things most commonly neglected on the roadmap — even though it’s one of the most important and resource-draining aspects of any organization. Expect more technically inclined team members to pipe up with maintenance questions, or simply visualize maintenance initiatives directly on your roadmap.

Where are the risks or dependencies?

Sure, the roadmap looks great. But what factors could derail its execution? What risks does each stakeholder need to be aware of, and how will that affect their department’s ability to reach their targets? Also, what steps can stakeholders take to pitch in and mitigate those dangers? The more honest you are about the realities facing your roadmap, the more likely you’ll build trust — and get buy-in for your plan.

What happens after the presentation?

Alignment is a continuous process . It doesn’t just end when your meeting is finished. Make sure you follow up your roadmap presentation with thorough meeting notes and the updated roadmap. Create a concrete space — whether it’s within an email, a shared document, or your roadmap itself — where stakeholders can share feedback.

Reminder! The Number 1 way to fail your roadmap presentation is to not talk to anyone beforehand. Your presentation is all about alignment. Set the tone before your presentation by talking to — and, more importantly listening to — each stakeholder.

With Roadmunk, you can centralize customer feedback, prioritize what to build next and build beautiful customer-driven roadmaps. Signup for a free trial here .

10 ways to succeed with a product roadmap presentation

How to influence and inspire teams with your product roadmap presentation.

Martin Suntinger

Browse topics

The product roadmap presentation can be nail biting for both developers and product managers; one party has worked hard to come up with a vision while the other party waits to see the unknown that is going to affect their work.

I felt this tension when I worked as a developer and I often found myself unsatisfied with the roadmaps product management put together. I didn't fully buy into the decisions, and I'd often walk out of a planning meeting with the sentiment of "Well, this doesn't make sense to me, but if they think so...", or even worse, a "We'll have to figure out things ourselves and make it look like what we do fits this roadmap.

You might argue the problem was likely me suffering from NIH (Not Invented Here syndrome) and you might be right. As a developer, I had a very strong opinion on what was the right thing to do. But now as a product manager, I see what caused this disconnect, and what general knowledge product managers can draw from this disconnect to hit a home run with a roadmap presentation. After all, if the technical team agrees with and understands the big picture, day-to-day design and implementation decisions will be made with the right context, and you’ll get the product you envisioned.

The following are my top ten ways to win over teams with a product roadmap presentation.

1. Choose substance over buzzwords

While buzzwords like “big data analytics”, "machine learning," or “an Internet of Things initiative (IoT)” might resonate with business stakeholders as high-level anchor points, they aren't helpful and actionable items for technical teams. Engineering needs to know exactly what it is they're building, how it relates to current products, how it should be delivered, and who will use it in the end, and for what purpose.

Setting high-level themes is great for structuring the roadmap and context, but make sure you don’t stop there and have good answers for what is behind each high-level item. For example, if you've called a theme "intelligent services," make sure to break this down into  key initiatives and epics  that are needed in order to deliver this theme.

2. Set the right context

Technical teams need context for why you are building something on a roadmap. No technical team is going to say, "Just tell me what you want and I’ll build it." On the contrary, engineers need to see evidence for why you see demand for a feature. Let data speak, but also tell a powerful story from the perspective of your users. Use personas, and talk about some alternatives that you've excluded, and why. To help the entire team understand the roadmap the "why" matters as much as the "what."

3. Consider commitments carefully

If a feature doesn't seem well thought through or realistic, yet it is still on the roadmap, this should scream red flag. You don't want the technical team getting the impression that they have to build stuff just because you promised it to someone. This could be a commitment to a customer or because because "management wants it." So be wise about making commitments. Even if you have a forcing function behind yourself that requires a particular change, make sure you understand and pass on the rationale to the team, and stand behind it yourself.

4. Make realistic plans

A vision is good, but it’s even better if everyone feels confident that it can be achieved. The plan doesn't need to be precise, but if the first thing your development manager sees when looking at a roadmap is a huge bottleneck – for example, if the roadmap looks design heavy and frontend centered, but the team only has one designer and has struggled with frontend topics in the last few months – then you'll have he or she struggling with the roadmap throughout the rest of your presentation.

Make sure you do a reality check upfront with the team and play with what-if scenarios. You need to have answers, a clear plan of action, and concise consideration about the "how it can be done" before asking for everyone's commitment.

5. Think big, start small

You need to be aware of where a product and team skills are today versus where you want them to be. It's great to advance into new fields, which might require new skills in the team or moving away from existing technology, but don’t just write down dreams of where you’d like to be in a year. Instead, think about how to get there realistically. Acquiring talent takes time, adopting new technologies takes time, and abandoning existing products requires clear commitments and a transition plan.

6. Build a business case

Business case? Yes. Technical teams care about businesses cases. Maybe not to the same extent as senior management, but an entire development team cares about why something is relevant to the business, if it produces real results, and how this will be measured. Tap into the business-street-smarts of your technical team. Everyone has a vested interest in the business succeeding as a whole, and it can be great source of feedback or additional ideas.

Also, full clarity on the business impact and seeing it happen can be a great motivator; driving results is satisfying beyond just having built and shipped a feature.

7. Balance mundane with motivating

Engineers want to build unique, innovative products that they can take pride in. If it's just the same old story others have told before, it can be demotivating. Make sure you do research to confirm that your story is as innovative as you think. Aside from demotivated developers, the business impact of the lack of innovation is even worse.

With this said, even roadmaps will always be a balancing act between exciting new features, and technically not too interesting must-haves that just have to be done. Try to make sure that even the mundane is motivating on your roadmap.

8. Think beyond MVP and v1

Creating a minimum viable product, and then a version 1 is one thing, but there’s also everything that happens post-launch: operations, maintenance, feature requests from users, continuous improvements, and new versions of other products and/or platforms that are integrated. A quick think on what the challenges and obstacles might be after a launch will bring these to light without much effort, and engineers will be thankful that you didn't ignore these realities. Rough estimates suggest that the initial effort of building a new feature is often only a third to one half of the total effort spent on it over its entire lifetime. In other words: the aftermath is more costly then the initial build, and some "quick small things" become very costly in the long run.

9. Roll with the punches

Estimates are a good thing. They give you guidance, and are created to the best of a product manager's knowledge at each given point in time. However, many assumptions made for estimates turn out very wrong once you go into implementation or refine a design. Make sure you prepare and present the roadmap so that it’s flexible to changes.

10. Be open and honest

A roadmap is there to provide guidance. It’s not a detailed plan for execution and everyone on a software team knows that. There's no need to sell it as something different than it is. So if you don’t have all the details on a topic yet, be open about it. Share what you have, what the intention is, what the open questions are and highest risks that still need to be addressed. Point out areas that require experimentation and more research to nail down the "what." Just remember to account for this experimentation time in planning.

The bottom line?

Your team deserves a roadmap that clearly paints the big picture, but doesn't neglect realities. Your team also deserves a roadmap that is motivating, exciting, and has enough details so the entire software team knows what to do in the next 1-2 sprints with a feeling of confidence that they'll achieve great results with material impact for the business.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly: Copilot will soon make a PDF from a PowerPoint file and more.

John Callaham Neowin @JCalNEO · Jun 2, 2024 06:28 EDT with 0 comments

Microsoft 365 app icon with Office apps arranged on the sides

Welcome back to our weekly roundup of what's been added to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website . The company didn't add too many new entries on the site this week, but there was still enough of them that might be of interest to many people who use the online productivity apps.

If you use PowerPoint a lot but want an easier way to convert your presentation to another format, the Microsoft 365 Roadmap added a new entry this week that might be of interest. Due out later in June , the web and desktop versions of PowerPoint will add a new Copilot-based feature:

Copilot in PowerPoint will now be able to support automatically generating a presentation based on a PDF file. This is in addition to the existing support for automatically generating a presentation based on a Word document.

In July, Microsoft Teams will get a number of new features. One of them that's coming to the desktop, Mac, and web versions will automatically hide inactive Teams channels;

Easily keep your channels list relevant. Teams will automatically detect inactive channels you haven’t interacted with in a while, and automatically hide them for you. You have the option to review the list of channels and unhide some or all of them, opt out of automatic hiding from settings, or initiate this process on demand.

The desktop version of Teams will also add new sound notification options in July .

You can change the sound of your notifications to help you stay focused, prioritize quickly and avoid distractions. You can as well make urgent notifications and priority contact notifications more prominent. You can also mute notification sounds when you are busy or in a meeting.

All versions of Teams will get a new Copilot feature in July :

You can now ask Copilot in chat and channels to respond to questions regarding a conversation in a specific time period, for example: last month.

Finally, users of the new Outlook for Windows app, and the web version of Outlook, are getting a Copilot-based rewriting feature in July :

Similar to Microsoft Word, highlight and rewrite capabilities will allow users to select specific sentences in their email draft and have them rewritten by Copilot. Using highlight and rewrite when drafting with Copilot in Outlook, users will be able to give detailed instructions on how to rewrite and be able to modify tone and length.

That is our look back at the last seven days on the Microsoft 366 roadmap. Come back again in a week as we do this again and check out what's new on the site.

All the datacenter roadmap updates Intel, AMD, Nvidia teased at Computex

We sifted through hours of presentations so you don't have to.

Computex At the annual Computex conference in Taipei this week Intel, AMD, and Nvidia showed off their latest datacenter and AI kit, and offered a tantalizing glimpse of what's coming next on their respective roadmaps.

One of the most surprising updates came from Nvidia. Last year, we learned the GPU designer was accelerating its development cycle to support a yearly release cadence. On stage in Taipei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang gave us the best picture yet of the chip maker's plans, including the name of its next-gen GPU and systems architecture - Rubin.

Nvidia's roadmap now extends to 2027 and includes an all new Rubin GPU and Vera CPU coming in 2026

Nvidia's roadmap now extends to 2027 and includes an all-new Rubin GPU and Vera CPU coming in 2026 ... Click to enlarge

While we often get caught up in the specifications and features of the chips themselves, whether they be the H100, GB200 Superchip, or its Blackwell Ultra sibling, it's important to remember these components aren't really standalone parts you can pick off a shelf. Nvidia's highest-end accelerators aren't PCIe cards; they're entire platforms.

You can't just buy a B100 or B200; they come in packs of eight as part of Nvidia's DGX or HGX platform. And so, Nvidia's roadmap encompasses not only the CPUs and GPUs, but also the system and cluster networking necessary to support deployment at scale.

Looking closer at Nvidia's roadmap, there aren't too many surprises. Nvidia announced everything coming in 2024 back at GTC in March. What is new to the Blackwell line is the Ultra GPU and Spectrum Ultra Ethernet switches due in 2025. We don't know much about this Blackwell Ultra at this point other than it'll feature — if we're reading this right — eight stacks of 12-high HBM3e memory, which should bring with it a sizable bump in bandwidth and capacity over previous incarnations.

The next evolution of Nvidia's GPU architecture won't come until 2026 with the debut of Rubin, which will apparently use HBM4 memory. 2026 will also see Nvidia retire its Grace CPU architecture in favor of a new one codenamed Vera.

roadmap in presentation

Along with the new compute architectures, Nvidia plans to roll out 1.6 Tbps InfiniBand and Ethernet Switches alongside matching ConnectX-9 SuperNICs. Meanwhile, its NVLink 6 switches will see their bandwidth double from 1.8 TBps today to 3.6 TBps.

We'll note that the roadmap Nvidia showed off during its Computex keynote is actually less aggressive than the one pitched to investors last year. That roadmap had 1.6 Tbps networking slated for release in 2025. As we reported at the time, there were a number of not inconsiderable challenges with pulling this off. Most notably, the PCIe bandwidth required to support networking that fast wouldn't be ready in time.

However, that isn't the end of Nvidia's roadmap, which now extends into 2027 with - you guessed it - a Rubin Ultra GPU which looks like it'll have a whopping 12 stacks of HBM4 memory. The Next Platform has more on Rubin and Nv's plans here .

AMD punches the accelerator on its AI roadmap

As we said, Nvidia intends to put out new GPUs each year. While it's not planning to unleash a new architecture every 12 months, AMD is going to try.

During her Computex keynote, CEO Lisa Su revealed AMD was moving to a yearly release cadence as the House of Zen looks to catch up with rival Nvidia.

Its Instinct MI300-series accelerators, based on its CDNA 3 graphics architecture, launched late last year and boast a not inconsiderable advantage over Nvidia's H100 and H200-series accelerators in floating-point performance, memory bandwidth, and capacity.

AMD intends to extend that lead with the introduction of the MI325X in Q4, which from all appearances is a HBM3e-boosted version of the regular MI300X but with 50 percent more capacity. You can find our deep dive on the memory-optimized accelerator here .

However it won't be long before AMD's CDNA 3 architecture is supplanted. The chip designer intends to bring more capable Instinct accelerators to market in 2025 with the launch of its CDNA 4 compute architecture.

There's a lot we still don't know about the upcoming CDNA 4 Instinct MI350 accelerator, though AMD has told us that chips based on CDNA 4 will feature 288 GB of HBM3e and move to a 3nm process node. The architecture will also add support for lower-precision 4-bit and 6-bit floating-point data types, bringing it into parity with Nvidia's Blackwell.

AMD's "CNDA next" architecture will follow a year later and bring with it "significant architectural upgrades," according to execs. However, beyond this, details are rather sparse.

Alongside AMD's more aggressive GPU roadmap, it also teased its 5th-gen Epyc CPU family, codenamed Turin. Due out later this year, AMD boasted the server processor will pack up to 192 cores, twice that of its 4th-gen Genoa parts and 50 percent more than its cloud-optimized Bergamo SKUs.

An image showing AMD's roadmap for its Zen architecture through 2024.

AMD's latest Zen architecture roadmap ... Click to enlarge

Based on the fact that AMD proceeded to show performance figures for a 128-core part, we're going to go out on a limb and say the 192-core variant is probably a Bergamo successor.

As a reminder, this is the most recent roadmap we have for AMD's Epyc lineup. We expect we'll get more details on its 6th-gen parts closer to Turin's release later this year.

Intel's phased Xeon 6 roll out while Gaudi3 remains on track

On the topic of CPUs, at Computex this week Intel unveiled a 144 e-core datacenter CPU, the first of several Xeon 6 products it plans to roll out over the next few quarters.

Intel has been hyping its Sierra Forrest e-core and Granite Rapids p-core Xeons going back to early 2023, and as it turns out the parts actually span two platforms: A smaller, lower power 6700-series platform and a larger, 500W 6900-series platform.

The two platforms will roll out over the next few quarters.

Intel's two platforms will roll out over the next few quarters ... Click to enlarge

The first of these arrived at Computex in the form of Intel's Xeon 6 6700E processors, which offer 64 to 144 of its power sipping efficiency cores; employ a heterogenous die architecture that splits off I/O functionality and compute; and are its first to use its in-house Intel 3 process tech.

That chip will be followed in Q3 by Intel's Xeon 6 6900P processor series, which will carry up to 128 performance cores and will boost its memory and PCIe capacity to 12 channels at up to 8,800 MT/s using MCR DIMMs, and 96 lanes of PCIe 5.0.

Finally, the remaining Xeon 6 processors in Intel's line up are slated for release sometime in Q1 of 2025. These chips will include Intel's four and eight socket p-core parts, as well as its monster 288 e-core 6900E SKU, first touted at Intel Innovation last September.

And while not shown in the graphic, Intel is already working on its next-gen e-core Xeon, codenamed Clearwater Forest, which will be one of its first based on its much anticipated 18A process tech.

You can find a full breakdown on everything we know about Intel's Xeon 6 processors here .

Intel also took the time to talk up its latest AI accelerator, announced back at Vision back in April. On stage, Gelsinger revealed that baseboards with eight of its Gaudi3 chips would cost you $125,000. You can find our coverage of Gelsinger’s Computex keynote here .

As a reminder, Gaudi3 is already sampling to Intel's partners, with volume production expected to ramp in Q3 for air-cooled units and Q4 for liquid-cooled variants. However it's worth noting that Intel's flagship AI accelerator is also the last of its kind.

Intel has already started sampling Gaudi 3 accelerators to OEM/ODM customers with the chip expected to ramp beginning in Q3.

Its replacement, codenamed Falcon Shores, is due out next year. For those who don't recall, Falcon Shores' development has been a bit of a roller coaster. The chip was originally envisioned as APU, or as Intel prefers XPU, which would combine CPUs and GPUs on a single package, similar to AMD's MI300A.

However, those plans were scrapped with Falcon Shores being recast as a GPU that would combine Intel's Xe graphics tech with the Intel Habana Team's AI chemistry. ®

PS: Oh look, it's the Nvidia CEO signing a woman's top with his autograph at Computex amid a throng of fans. Yup!

Using less power and rack space, Xeon 6 processors free up compute capacity and infrastructure for innovative new AI projects.

Fact Sheet: Intel Xeon 6 Processors

Providing High Performance GenAI at Significantly Lower Total Cost with Intel Gaudi AI Accelerators

Today, harnessing the power of generative AI becomes faster and less expensive. As the dominant infrastructure choice, x86 operates at scale in nearly all data center environments, serving as the foundation for integrating the power of AI while ensuring cost-effective interoperability and the tremendous benefits of an open ecosystem of developers and customers.

Intel Xeon processors are the ideal CPU head node for AI workloads and operate in a system with Intel Gaudi AI accelerators, which are purposely designed for AI workloads. Together, these two offer a powerful solution that seamlessly integrates into existing infrastructure.

As the only MLPerf-benchmarked alternative to Nvidia H100 for training and inference of large language models (LLM), the Gaudi architecture gives customers the GenAI performance they seek with a price-performance advantage that provides choice and fast deployment time at lower total cost of operating.

A standard AI kit including eight Intel Gaudi 2 accelerators with a universal baseboard (UBB) offered to system providers at $65,000 is estimated to be one-third the cost of comparable competitive platforms. A kit including eight Intel Gaudi 3 accelerators with a UBB will list at $125,000, estimated to be two-thirds the cost of comparable competitive platforms 4 .

Intel Gaudi 3 accelerators will deliver significant performance improvements for training and inference tasks on leading GenAI models, helping enterprises unlock the value in their proprietary data. Intel Gaudi 3 in an 8,192-accelerator cluster is projected to offer up to 40% faster time-to-train 5 versus the equivalent size Nvidia H100 GPU cluster and up to 15% faster training 6 throughput for a 64-accelerator cluster versus Nvidia H100 on the Llama2-70B model. In addition, Intel Gaudi 3 is projected to offer an average of up to 2x faster inferencing 7 versus Nvidia H100, running popular LLMs such as Llama-70B and Mistral-7B.

To make these AI systems broadly available, Intel is collaborating with at least 10 top global system providers, including six new providers who announced they’re bringing Intel Gaudi 3 to market. Today’s new collaborators include Asus, Foxconn, Gigabyte, Inventec, Quanta and Wistron, expanding the production offerings from leading system providers Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and Supermicro.

Accelerating On-Device AI for laptop PCs; New Architecture Delivers 3x AI Compute and Incredible Power-Efficiency

Beyond the data center, Intel is scaling its AI footprint at the edge and in the PC. With more than 90,000 edge deployments and 200 million CPUs delivered to the ecosystem, Intel has enabled enterprise choice for decades.

Today the AI PC category is transforming every aspect of the compute experience, and Intel is at the forefront of this category-creating moment. It’s no longer just about faster processing speeds or sleeker designs, but rather creating edge devices that learn and evolve in real time – anticipating user needs, adapting to their preferences, and heralding an entirely new era of productivity, efficiency and creativity.

AI PCs are projected to make up 80% of the PC market by 2028, according to Boston Consulting Group.
