Read: Difference between Thesis, Dissertation, and Research Report.

Introduction

The research proposal provides an indication of what you intend to do for your dissertation, rather than a rigid plan. It is very likely that your final work will vary from your initial proposal in some respects. However, the proposal is the first stage of your project, and an important starting point for your research and for your discussions with your supervisor. It will help you to plan your work and to focus on the purpose and structure of your final project work.

Your college university will provide you with more guidelines on how the proposal will be assessed. usually, a word count is also provided. In most cases, the Word limit is around 1,500 words.

Why is a Research Proposal Required?

Here’s how a research proposal helps students:

  • It offers students you the opportunity to think carefully about the research project (i.e. what, why, how, etc.)
  • You can check for feasibility
  • It forms the basis of your research work/dissertation where you can elaborate further

Things to Keep in Mind

Before you begin on your research, you need to first submit your proposal. Every college has a proposal form, and you have to fill in that format.

Make sure you consider the learning from all your class sessions in the academic year, review the slides, materials, etc; basically, read whatever has been taught to you.

Refer to the example proposals shared, the online Mark Saunders book, and the proposal Marking criteria. Understand how a dissertation proposal looks like.

Make sure you write in an academic, third person, and direct style. Make use of Grammarly if possible.

Use lots of citations integrated throughout all sections with an extensive references list correctly formatted and made up of primarily academic journal articles.

Please note this is just the proposal part, once you have discussed this with your professor, you can proceed with the complete research. You can go through Research report formats & examples here.

Research/Dissertation Proposal Format

Here’s how you should structure a research proposal.

Some colleges ask you to submit this information in a Research/Dissertation Proposal form.

Here, you should present the central idea. Provide reasons for choosing this topic. Why it is worth studying and for whom?

What has been done in the field so far? Is there a gap? What will be your contribution; you need to provide theory to support your arguments.

You need to present the gap (research problem) and the Research Question that derives from it, as well as the Research Objectives.

  • References: Please provide a complete list of all the references you have used in writing your research proposal. It is vital that you list your references correctly. It is recommended that you follow the proper conventions, else you could fail the proposal stage. Refer to English Language and Learning Support website (in case your college has one) for guidance on how to reference your work

How is Proposal Assessed (Assessment / Marking Criteria)?

A proposal is usually assessed based on the following:

Suitability of literature review including identification of research problem/gap. Clarification of research objectives/questions based on the chosen topic.

Selection of research design/method justified Appropriateness and justification of proposed research instrument and data collection procedure, data analysis, and sampling procedures Appropriateness of Ethical and Practical Considerations as well as timetable.

Presentation, report structure, logical sequencing of discussion grammar, and spelling References must be cited and/or listed following the Harvard system.

How to Format a PhD Synopsis (India)

Qamar Mayyasah

PhD_Synopsis_Format_Guidance

Introduction

This article will answer common questions about the PhD synopsis, give guidance on how to write one, and provide my thoughts on samples.

A PhD synopsis is a detailed summary of your proposed research project which justifies the need for your work. It is used to convince academic committees that your project should be approved.

If you are wondering how to write a synopsis for a PhD, then there are several things you must make sure your synopsis includes. Firstly, the reader must be able to read your synopsis and understand what contribution it would make to the research area. You should also explain the research objectives, methodology, data analysation and presentation format. Finally, you should conclude with limitations of your study and how you envisage others building on the findings you make.

PhD Synopsis format for a project

Although the format of a PhD synopsis report may differ between universities, there are many universal recommendations I can give. First, the research project synopsis format must include several fundamental sections which allow you to clearly detail your proposed project.

These sections are outlined below:

Research project title

Clearly define the title of your research project.

Include an introduction which summarises the current knowledge in your research area. This section should explain where gaps in knowledge are, and briefly what your project aims to do to address these gaps.

Literature review

A literature review will be a summary of published literature including journals, papers and other academic documentation which relate to your project. You need to critically appraise these documents: What have others done? What did they find? Where could their work be expanded on?

Aims & Objectives

Clearly define what the purpose of the PhD project is. What questions are you trying to answer? How will you measure success?

Research Methodology

Explain how you will achieve your objectives. Be specific and outline your process; the equipment you will use, data collection strategies, questionnaires you will distribute and data analysation techniques you will employ. This is a critical part of the research synopsis as it demonstrates whether your project is achievable or too ambitious.

You must provide references and citations to any sources you use. Reference materials are needed to acknowledge the original source, allow further reading for those who are interested and avoid claims of plagiarism. A number of different referencing systems exist, so it is important that you use the referencing system outlined in your university guidelines.

Provide a conclusion which should briefly summarise what your PhD research project is and why it is needed. You should also comment on the limitations of your work so that the scope of your study is clear.

In addition to the synopsis format for a PhD, we have outlined the styling rules you should follow:

  • Approximately 1” margins on top, bottom, and right of page.
  • Approximately 1.25” margin on left of page to allow space for binding.
  • Sans serif font (for example Times New Roman).
  • Black colour font.
  • Size 11pt or 12pt font.

It is important to remember this is general advice to assist with PhD synopsis writing. You must check your university guidelines first as they may have particular rules which you should follow.

PhD Synopsis Samples

I would not recommend using a PhD synopsis sample. This is because every research project is different, and the purpose of a synopsis report is to demonstrate the uniqueness of your project. Instead you should use the above format, and ensure you address each of the sections.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope and delimitations of a thesis, dissertation or paper define the topic and boundaries of a research problem – learn how to form them.

Productive working

Behavioral finance is an open-minded finance which includes the study of psychology, sociology, and finance. Behavioral finance micro examines behavior or biases of investors and behavioral finance macro describe anomalies in the efficient market. Nowadays, behavioral finance is not a new concept, the existence, and impact of behavioral biases in investor's behavior and human judgment are huge. In this paper, we will review various studies in this area so as to have a clear understanding of the behavioral finance and its significance in the financial decision making of investors. JEL CLASSIFICATION: G11, G14

The deliberation in theoretical finance among the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) and the subject of the behavioral finance is of immense interest. from the time when its emerge, the EMH has been the most significant theory which describes the behavior of the diverse agents in the financial markets and overlooks more or less any prospective impact of human behavior in the investment method. From the end of 1970s and the commencement of 1980s, a rising number of researchers and scholars showed the irregularity of this theory. The anomalies of the recent portfolio models and theories have provoked the development of behavioral finance. Behavioral finance assimilates psychology and economics in finance theory and has its heredity in theground-breaking work of great psychologists Tversky and Daniel Kahneman (1979). The rationale of this study is to present a synthesis of the behavioral finance literature over the last two decades.

Thomas J Sullivan

"Speculators may do no harm as bubbles on a steady stream of enterprise. But the position is serious when enterprise becomes the bubble on a whirlpool of speculation." —JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES Is investor behavior rational during times of high market volatility, bear, and bull markets? If investors are armed with the knowledge that markets can be vulnerable to irrational exuberance1 And, therefore, causing speculative bubbles, how can they improve their decision-making process during these periods of market change? These questions can begin to be answered by understanding the history and theory of behavioral finance and learning to implement the lessons that it teaches. Given the current academic understanding of behavioral finance theory: how people think and react to market bubbles; the majority of investors, advisors, and institutions do not act rationally during times of changing market conditions. Investors can correct their decision making processes during times of financial bubbles by learning from past market bubbles, understanding behavioral finance theory, learning to implement its concepts through self reflection of one’s rational expectations, recognizing and understanding their mistakes and those of others, and garnering self control of one’s actions and decisions during any type of financial situation.

This research aims to investigate behavioral factors influencing the decisions of individual investors at the Securities Companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Data for this research was collated from 188 responses from individual investors, accounting for the response rate of 63%. There are five behavioral factors of individual investors at the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange: Herding, Market, Prospect, Overconfidence-gamble's fallacy, and Anchoring-ability bias. Securities Companies may also use the findings of this research for better understanding on investors' decision to give better recommendations to them. Stock prices then reflect their true value and Ho Chi Minh stock market becomes the yardstick of the economy's wealth and helps enterprises to raise capital for business activities.

Canadian Institute for Knowledge Development (CIKD)

International Journal of Organizational Leadership (IJOL)

Behavioral finance is precisely non-rational behavior of market investors. Behavioral finance theory shows that investors make investment decisions rationally, by intermittent change from the past and that investment decisions can be taken under the influence of some psychological factors. This theory shows how human behaviors are effective in the functioning of investment decisions and that investment decisions can be made in non-rational behaviors. People are determined to invest under the influence of emotions and personal intuitions with models based on rational behavior and investment behaviors. Whether individuals are rational in the economic decision-making process is one of the key points of debate and it seems quite complex to be able to demonstrate this. This study will focus on individuals (investors), one of the economic decision makers. Socio-economic factors, as well as psychological factors, influence the risk that investors perceive in the decision-making process of individual investors. The purpose of this study is to identify stimuli that affect individual investors' drivers of financial investment decisions and to consider it in terms of behavioral finance. For this purpose, an individual investor questionnaire has been determined in the field which has previously been validated and reliable. This questionnaire was applied to 200 employees working in private and public banks operating in Aksaray and 177 people were provided feedback. In the case of Aksaray, it has been determined which stimulants are under the influence of predictions, estimates, emotions, personal intuitions, psychological and sociological behaviors of investment decision-making individuals.

Muhammad Yasir

The study is based on analyzing Pakistan's individual investor by contrasting their behavior in bull market (2007 & 2010) and bear market (2008-2009).The major objective of study is to examine whether the attitude, perception and preferences towards risk, book to market valuations are different between varying market conditions. Empirical investigation is done by using data of 100 companies of different sectors for four years. Price earnings ratio, Book to market value, systematic risk, volatility and abnormal returns are used as measure of risk in six different regression models along with intercept and interactive dummies. Individual level of ownership is used as attitude towards risk. Due to some behavioral biases, Overall Individual investor attitude towards risk is similar in both market condition except a significant behavioral difference is identified between bull and bear market and such behavior is associated with Book to Market Valuation only.

12 research papers in 9 years: University of Mumbai contribution to UGC’s digital bank

Eight of them have come from one research guide; savitribai phule pune university leads in maharashtra, with 9,706 theses uploaded on portal.

Nine years after the University Grants Commission (UGC) launched Shodhganga, a digital repository of dissertations and theses submitted by research scholars, the University of Mumbai (MU) has contributed only 12 research papers to it, with eight of them from one research guide, Arvind Luhar from Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari.

University of Mumbai.(HT FILE)

Managed by UGC’s Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, Ahmedabad, Shodhganga seeks to provide an open access to the vast body of doctoral research in India while curbing plagiarism and duplication of work. Shodhganga was set up in 2010, but the MU signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with INFLIBNET centre to contribute to the repository in January 2015. However, the university changed its rules to award PhD and MPhil in June last year, announcing that all research work had to be uploaded on the Shodhganga portal. The Mumbai university has awarded more than 1,400 PhDs, MPhils and MSc degrees between 2016 and 2019.

Other universities in the state are among the biggest contributors to the repository, which has so far accumulated 2.11 lakh research papers. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) leads in the state, and ranks second nationally, with 9,706 theses uploaded on the portal, followed by Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU), Aurangabad, which contributed 5,035 papers. “While the university’s thesis section is responsible for submitting soft copies of papers, a proper chain of command is yet to be put in place,” said a professor from MU’s School of Economics and Public Policy. Another teacher from the sociology department said that he has been following up on the issue, to no avail. The university said the papers couldn’t be uploaded so far owing to technical reasons. “We have contacted INFLIBNET centre and will submit soft copies of papers soon,” said an official.

The teachers also pointed out other shortcomings in the research and development work at the 161-year-old university. “The varsity is yet to purchase the anti-plagiarism software which detects duplication in research,” said the sociology professor.

The economics professor said there’s no open-defence viva, where PhD and MPhil candidates are required to defend their work in an open forum.
