There are two stages of Jamia entrance result, general/initial result and spot registrations.

JMI general/initial result 2024

The general/ initial JMI result will be released in the form of a selection list. This selection list will be prepared on the basis of the candidate's performance in the JMI entrance exam 2024. The university may publish up to four JMI selection lists. Once the candidate got selected in the general/initial result, he/she has to visit the concerned department head for document verification and submission of required documents. JMI Result 2024 - What is Tie-Breaking Policy?

If two or more candidates obtain the same scores in the JMI entrance exam, then the merit list will be prepared on the basis of the following policy.

Except for BTech, BArch, and BDS, ties are resolved on the basis of date of birth, with the candidates older in age receiving the higher rank.

Candidates who achieve high marks in the entrance exam are given a higher rank for interview programmes. If the marks in the written test are the same, the date of birth criteria is used, which means that candidates who are older are given a higher rank.

The agency administering the test determines the rank for BTech, B.Arch, and BDS programmes.

Students who are not satisfied with the marks obtained in the JMI 2024 results, then they can apply for revaluation. The application forms for revaluation will be made available on JMI's official website. Students will find the revaluation form at the bottom of the results page.

The JMI 2024 selection list includes the category-specific cut-off marks required to pass the examination. The university issues approximately four JMI selection lists. The selected candidates will be called for document verification. Candidates can review the previous year’s JMI selection lists for various UG and PG programmes to get a sense of how the results are announced following the JMI entrance examination.

Bachelor's Degree in school teaching subject with not less than 45% marks and at least 50% marks in Master's Degree Examination in the same school teaching subject in which the candidate has applied.

The main school teaching subject in which the candidate is applying for should have been studied in all years or semesters.

Unfortunately, you cannot apply for B.Ed for history or political science in JMI but you can apply for B.Ed in Mathematics and Economics.

Jmi has released the notification for ph.d admission for acedemic session 2022-2023..

Jamia Millia Islamia has released the notification for Ph.D admissions for academic session 2022-2023. The online application will begin on November 22. Interested candidates will be able to apply online through the official website of jmicoe.in till December 22.

Jamia Millia Islamia will release the detailed notification in due course of time.

“The online application form for admission to Ph.D Programmes for academic session 2022- 2023 will be available on the university examination website i.e. jmicoe.in. The eligible candidates may apply for admission to Ph.D. Programmes w.e.f 22.11.2022 till 22.12.2022” reads the official notification", reads the official notification.

The candidates who have qualified their examination on or before the Academic Session of 2021- 2022 are eligible to apply.

Jamia Millia Islamia PhD Admission 2023-24 Eligibility Criteria

• A candidate seeking admission to the Ph.D. must have obtained a Master’s Degree with not less than 55% of marks in aggregate or its equivalent Grade ‘B’ in the UGC seven point scale (or equivalent CGPA wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a Foreign University/institute or a Degree recognized by the University as its equivalent in the subject/allied subject in which the candidate wishes to pursue a course of research or in a subject allied thereto.
• A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade/CGPA, may be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non- creamy layer)/Differently-abled or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991.
• Candidate possessing an M.Phil. degree with 55% marks from a recognized Indian University/Institute of minimum two semesters or its equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institute (for the direct Ph.D. programme). Provided the candidate has done M.Phil. degree in the same subject as per UGC norms.

Selection procedure.

• All Ph.D. applicants shall be admitted through an Entrance Test conducted at University level followed by Interview at the level of individual Department/Centre/Faculty concerned. The short listed applicants from entrance and exempted categories shall be called for interview.
• Candidates who have qualified UGC/CSIR-NET/AYUSH-NET/JRF examination (in the relevant area of research and it shall be examined by the concerned DRC/CRC) or any other equivalent examination conducted by the recognized Governmental Department/ Institute/ Agency/ SLET/ valid GATE score (with qualifying marks).
• The teacher fellowship holders such as QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) awardees of recognized colleges/ universities/ institutions, provided that the competent authority issues a ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) to the candidate to join the Ph.D. Programme and applicant must pass any type of test to avail the exemption.
• ICCR- Sponsored candidates, DST-INSPIRE or any other equivalent fellowship holder.

Entrance Test Details

(Last Time entrance details)

• The entrance test for admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be in English, except in the language departments, which may set the question paper in the concerned language.
• The entrance test shall be based on two question papers: Paper ‘I’ and ‘II’ of equal weightage and each of two hours duration.
• The Paper ‘I’ shall include 100 multiple choice (objective type) questions of one mark each on research methodology and shall be common to all applicants for admission to the Ph.D. programme at the level of each Faculty and the associated centres.
• The Paper ‘II’ of the entrance test shall deal with the advanced knowledge of the subject concerned. It shall have a weightage of 100 marks out of which 50 marks shall be assigned to 50 multiple choice (objective type) questions of one mark each and a set of subjective type questions having a weightage of another 50 marks.
• Criterion to Qualify the Entrance Test: Only those candidates who obtain at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate shall qualify for the interview
• Shortlisted candidates: The list of qualified candidates to be called for interview shall be prepared by concerned Department/Centre/Faculty, which shall also include the candidates who have been exempted from entrance test.

Interview and Provisional Registration in PhD Programme

• The shortlisted candidates shall be called for interview by the concerned Department/Centre/Faculty. The candidates called for interview have to bring original documents for the verification at the time of interview. They will be required to discuss their broad research interest/area, through a presentation, before the concerned DRC/CRC.
• For selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/viva-voce shall be given.

Two MIT PhD students awarded J-WAFS fellowships for their research on water

Since 2014, the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) has advanced interdisciplinary research aimed at solving the world's most pressing water and food security challenges to meet human needs. In 2017, J-WAFS established the Rasikbhai L. Meswani Water Solutions Fellowship and the J-WAFS Graduate Student Fellowship. These fellowships provide support to outstanding MIT graduate students who are pursuing research that has the potential to improve water and food systems around the world. 

Recently, J-WAFS awarded the 2024-25 fellowships to Jonathan Bessette and Akash Ball, two MIT PhD students dedicated to addressing water scarcity by enhancing desalination and purification processes. This work is of important relevance since the world's freshwater supply has been steadily depleting due to the effects of climate change. In fact, one-third of the global population lacks access to safe drinking water. Bessette and Ball are focused on designing innovative solutions to enhance the resilience and sustainability of global water systems. To support their endeavors, J-WAFS will provide each recipient with funding for one academic semester for continued research and related activities.

“This year, we received many strong fellowship applications,” says J-WAFS executive director Renee J. Robins. “Bessette and Ball both stood out, even in a very competitive pool of candidates. The award of the J-WAFS fellowships to these two students underscores our confidence in their potential to bring transformative solutions to global water challenges.”

2024-25 Rasikbhai L. Meswani Fellowship for Water Solutions

The Rasikbhai L. Meswani Fellowship for Water Solutions is a doctoral fellowship for students pursuing research related to water and water supply at MIT. The fellowship is made possible by Elina and Nikhil Meswani and family. 

Jonathan Bessette is a doctoral student in the Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Center within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, advised by Professor Amos Winter. His research is focused on water treatment systems for the developing world, mainly desalination, or the process in which salts are removed from water. Currently, Bessette is working on designing and constructing a low-cost, deployable, community-scale desalination system for humanitarian crises.

In arid and semi-arid regions, groundwater often serves as the sole water source, despite its common salinity issues. Many remote and developing areas lack reliable centralized power and water systems, making brackish groundwater desalination a vital, sustainable solution for global water scarcity. 

“An overlooked need for desalination is inland groundwater aquifers, rather than in coastal areas,” says Bessette. “This is because much of the population lives far enough from a coast that seawater desalination could never reach them. My work involves designing low-cost, sustainable, renewable-powered desalination technologies for highly constrained situations, such as drinking water for remote communities,” he adds.

To achieve this goal, Bessette developed a batteryless, renewable electrodialysis desalination system. The technology is energy-efficient, conserves water, and is particularly suited for challenging environments, as it is decentralized and sustainable. The system offers significant advantages over the conventional reverse osmosis method, especially in terms of reduced energy consumption for treating brackish water. Highlighting Bessette’s capacity for engineering insight, his advisor noted the “simple and elegant solution” that Bessette and a staff engineer, Shane Pratt, devised that negated the need for the system to have large batteries. Bessette is now focusing on simplifying the system’s architecture to make it more reliable and cost-effective for deployment in remote areas.

Growing up in upstate New York, Bessette completed a bachelor's degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo. As an undergrad, he taught middle and high school students in low-income areas of Buffalo about engineering and sustainability. However, he cited his junior-year travel to India and his experience there measuring water contaminants in rural sites as cementing his dedication to a career addressing food, water, and sanitation challenges. In addition to his doctoral research, his commitment to these goals is further evidenced by another project he is pursuing, funded by a J-WAFS India grant, that uses low-cost, remote sensors to better understand water fetching practices. Bessette is conducting this work with fellow MIT student Gokul Sampath in order to help families in rural India gain access to safe drinking water.

2024-25 J-WAFS Graduate Student Fellowship for Water and Food Solutions

The J-WAFS Graduate Student Fellowship is supported by the J-WAFS Research Affiliate Program , which offers companies the opportunity to engage with MIT on water and food research. Current fellowship support was provided by two J-WAFS Research Affiliates: Xylem , a leading U.S.-based provider of water treatment and infrastructure solutions, and GoAigua , a Spanish company at the forefront of digital transformation in the water industry through innovative solutions. 

Akash Ball is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering, advised by Professor Heather Kulik. His research focuses on the computational discovery of novel functional materials for energy-efficient ion separation membranes with high selectivity. Advanced membranes like these are increasingly needed for applications such as water desalination, battery recycling, and removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater. 

“Climate change, water pollution, and scarce freshwater reserves cause severe water distress for about 4 billion people annually, with 2 billion in India and China’s semiarid regions,” Ball notes. “One potential solution to this global water predicament is the desalination of seawater, since seawater accounts for 97 percent of all water on Earth.”

Although several commercial reverse osmosis membranes are currently available, these membranes suffer several problems, like slow water permeation, permeability-selectivity trade-off, and high fabrication costs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials that are promising candidates for highly selective ion separation with fast water transport due to high surface area, the presence of different pore windows, and the tunability of chemical functionality. In the Kulik lab, Ball is developing a systematic understanding of how MOF chemistry and pore geometry affect water transport and ion rejection rates. By the end of his PhD, Ball plans to identify existing, best-performing MOFs with unparalleled water uptake using machine learning models, propose novel hypothetical MOFs tailored to specific ion separations from water, and discover experimental design rules that enable the synthesis of next-generation membranes.  

Ball’s advisor praised the creativity he brings to his research, and his leadership skills that benefit her whole lab. Before coming to MIT, Ball obtained a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Jadavpur University in India. During a research internship at IIT Bombay in 2018, he worked on developing a technology for in situ arsenic detection in water. Like Bessette, he noted the impact of this prior research experience on his interest in global water challenges, along with his personal experience growing up in an area in India where access to safe drinking water was not guaranteed.

College of Nursing Assistant Professor Anna Krupp , PhD, MSHP, RN and Associate Professor Karen Dunn Lopez , PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN understand that intensive care unit (ICU) patients have a greater chance of developing functional decline, which may include new limitations in walking or a decreased ability to manage basic physical needs after hospital discharge. With funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality , Krupp and Dunn Lopez are proposing to develop a decision support tool in the electronic health record. The goal is to make complex decisions about when it is safe to assist ICU patients out of bed more efficient for nurses. Currently, nurses look in multiple locations in the EHR for this information. The tool will summarize key patient information on one screen.

“ICU nurses make hundreds of decisions during a shift and the decision to assist a patient to sit on the edge of the bed or walk in the room requires that nurses know a lot about the patient and their stability over the previous shift,” said Clinical Assistant Professor and Co-Investigator Heather Dunn , PhD, ACNP-BC, ARNP. “Enhancing mobility in the ICU is crucial for positive patient outcomes. However, assessing readiness for activities like walking is challenging when data needs to be gathered from multiple sections of the medical record.”

The project will be conducted in two phases. First, they’ll develop the decision support tool with input from practicing ICU nurses. Next, the tool will be studied in two environments—a simulated EHR with nurses from across the nation and a real-world trial in the ICU.

Both Krupp and Dunn Lopez bring differing expertise. Dunn Lopez will use her knowledge with usability science and focus her time in a simulated setting identifying the ease, use, and effectiveness of the tool.

“One thing we know is that if something is not easy to use, it isn’t going to get used. But there are methods that can make sure that what you are developing is useful to the people who use it,” Dunn Lopez said.

Krupp will apply her ICU-based clinical expertise with her implementation science training to plan and study how decision support is used in everyday clinical practice.

“The best-designed tool does not guarantee routine use in complex healthcare settings. Implementation science identifies and addresses contextual factors to help promote its use,” said Krupp.

Krupp and Dunn Lopez suspect the results of the study will influence a “pragmatic way of accelerating the use of patient data with guideline recommendations at the point of care to support ICU clinicians in delivering evidence-based care, decreasing the duration of bed rest, and reducing hospital-acquired functional decline.”
