Family Essay Titles

IELTS Essay Questions for the topic of Family. All essay questions below are reported by IELTS candidates and most have been repeated over the years. Regardless of the year reported, you could get any question below in your test. You should, therefore, prepare ideas for all questions given below. The topics below could appear in both GT and Academic IELTS Writing Task 2.

Family Essay Questions for IELTS Writing Task 2

Note that IELTS may paraphrase the question or change the task so don’t expect questions to appear the same. In other words, topics are repeated, but questions or tasks are often altered.

Nowadays parents put too much pressure on their children to succeed. What is the reason for doing this? Is this a negative or positive development? (Reported 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021)

Some people think it is better for children to grow up in the city, while others think that life in the countryside is more suitable. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both places? (frequent question)

In many modern societies, grandchildren rarely spend any quality time with their grandparents. What do you think are the consequences of this? (2019, 2021, 2022 – intergenerational topics are common many topics in IELTS)

Nowadays, it seems that different generations within the family spend less time doing activities together. Why is that? Is it a positive or negative development? (2023)

Children can learn effectively by watching television. Therefore they should be encouraged to watch television regularly at home and at school. To what extend do you agree or disagree? (Reported 2017, 2020, 2022, 2023 – the question could also ask about how to control the time children spend watching TV)

Some people think that the role of parents is to discipline their children and teach them about right and wrong. Other people consider that the main responsibility of parents is to nurture their children and provide them with a safe environment to grow up in. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. (2020, 2022 – discipline questions could also be about corporal punishment as a means of discipline, such as hitting children)

Most modern families have both parents working and as a result children spend less and less time with their parents. What is the reason for this? What problems can this cause? (2020)

The nuclear family is well adapted to move geographically due to its size. Do you think children benefit in any way from moving? Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? (2019)

In the past, the older generation were a source of knowledge and experience. Nowadays, the older generation have little understanding or experience of the modern world.

Has this had any negative impact on the way the elderly are treated by society and the family? What could be done to solve this situation? (2020)

In many western countries there is an increasing number of couples choosing to have no children. What are the advantages and disadvantages to couples having no children? (2018, 2020, 2021)

These days people are living into their 90’s and beyond. As a result, there is increasing concern about care for the elderly. Do you think it is the responsibility of the family to care for their elderly members or should the government be held responsible? (frequent question)

Children these days have more freedom than in pervious generations. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? (2021, 2023)

The values we gain from our parents and family have more influence over our future success than any skills or knowledge learned in school. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2023)

Reported essay questions are from students who have taken their IELTS test. That means questions may have appeared more frequently than have been reported. These questions may vary slightly in wording and focus from the original question. Family Values Essay

This is an IELTS family values essay, centered around the belief that families are not as close as in the past.

If you look at the question carefully, you will see that there are two tasks. Firstly, you have to explain why (give reasons ) families are not so close. The second task is to state whether you think this more of a negative or positive trend.

Take a look at the question:

Nowadays, families are not as close as in the past and a lot of people have become used to this.

Why is this happening?

Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the drawbacks?

So this essay is a mix of causes, advantages and disadvantages .

Be careful in noting that it is partly an opinion essay as you have to give your opinion as to whether the advantages outweigh (i.e. more advantages) the disadvantages.

Take a look at the question and the model answer:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Family Values Essay Model Answer

There has been a trend over recent decades for families to become less close than they were in the past and this situation is largely accepted in society. This essay will discuss the reasons for this and examine the benefits and drawbacks of this development.

One of the first reasons for a decline in the closeness of families is connected to the busy lifestyles that we now lead. Most people are having to work longer hours and often both parents work, so they simply do not have as much time to spend with each other as they did in the past. Another factor is the materialistic and consumer driven culture we now live in, which has led to less value being placed on family relationships. Modern technology also means that people are more interested in their online life than interacting with their family in their free time.

It could be argued that this has benefits. If people are not so close with their family, they are free to pursue their own dreams and aspirations, and to focus on improving their own lifestyle. However, I believe that there are far more negative outcomes. The most important factors leading to a fulfilled and happy life are emotional security and comfort. Without these we are in danger of feeling lost. It is a difficult world we live in and we need the support of people close to us to cope with modern life. We are seeing a rise in mental health problems in many countries and this may well be a factor in this.

To conclude, busy modern lifestyles, changing cultural values and modern technology are causing families to become less close. We should try to halt this trend as it has more negative than positive outcomes.

This family values essay would merit a high IELTS score.

The essay is organized clearly . The introduction introduces the topic and the thesis clearly sets out the contents of the essay.

Each body paragraph has a clear central idea - the first paragraph is about the reasons and the second paragraph examines the advantages and disadvantages . This paragraph also makes it clear that the writer believes the drawbacks outweigh the benefits .

It would also be possible to have presented a separate body paragraph, each with the advantages and disadvantages, but you would need to be careful not to write too much and possibly run out of time.

The conclusion then summarises the main points made in the essay and again clarifies the opinion .

My family is my biggest pride and joy. We are a family of six living in a spacious and sparsely furnished apartment with three rooms. Our family comprises my paternal grandparents, my parents, a younger sister, and yours truly. I believe that we are fortunate to live with our grandparents since the love and care that we get from them are unparalleled. My parents are also supportive of our dreams and aspirations while giving us the space that we require to lead our own lives.

My grandfather retired from service as the General Manager at a nationalized bank. He has had a long and illustrious career. My grandmother taught mathematics at a leading Government school. She also retired from service some years back. My father is a chartered accountant, running his practice and consulting with several MNCs and corporate biggies. He has been a good student from childhood, just like my grandparents. All three of them also share another passion, namely running and athletics. Both my grandparents were into marathon running in their younger years. They still go for jogs and walks each morning. My father runs at least ten kilometers each day without fail.

My mother runs her salon; she has always been passionate about beauty and wellness. She also loves cooking delicious dishes that we love feasting on. My sister studies English in the first year of college. She is good at creative writing and debate; she wishes to study media, journalism, and communications in the future. I am currently working as a data science specialist at one of India’s biggest technology firms. I also pursue clay modeling in my spare time. We are an eclectic family with diverse tastes, and that lends a special dimension to our life and time together.

I happen to live in a family of 32 members, which is surprising, considering today’s nuclear-family explosion and the dismantling of the joint-family structure. Yet, I feel blessed and grateful to reside in a home where there is unbridled love and unquestioned support at all times. Our family comprises my grandfather, grandmother, father, and his four brothers (my uncles). All five brothers are married and have two children each. This makes it 22 members in all. I have a younger sister, while my uncles all have two daughters each.

My family also comprises my grandfather’s brother and his wife. They have two children (two uncles) who are both married and have two children each (all sisters). The best part is that I am the only brother in a team of 14 siblings. You can imagine the kind of love and pampering that I get, along with unconditional support. Food at home is still cooked in the same kitchen, and every family gets to decide the menu for a particular day. Every family equally contributes towards the household expenditure, which is now digitally created and shared among everyone.

We have always grown up having a blast together. Every day is like a special occasion at home. For us, it is not only about having our parents to fall back on; we have two sets of grandparents and multiple sets of parents in the form of my uncles and aunts. Another interesting aspect is that we take a family vacation once every year, all 32 of us. This is usually an elaborate affair, with travel plans being chalked out well in advance. Needless to say, we always have a blast on your vacations together. I am proud of the values of togetherness and sharing inculcated in us through our family dynamics.

How do I write an essay about my family?

There are several ways that you can write an essay about your family. You have to follow this pattern-

Talk about your family structure in general and the number of members.
Give an introduction to yourself first.
Then mention the people in your family, their profession/passions, and your relationship with them in a nutshell.

You can also talk about extended members of your family who stay in your house along with mentioning any special traits/attributes of your family, things you like to do together, etc.

Advocates for increased reliance on others point to the web of economic and social ties that bind us. For instance, the present-day economy is a tapestry of collaborative projects that involve people working together in physical spaces as well as remotely online. Moreover, social media platforms have created communities that transcend geographical boundaries, fostering relationships and support networks that hinge on collective participation. For example, crowd-funding and online activism are clear indicators of people pooling their resources and efforts for common goals.

Conversely, there is an argument to be made for the growing autonomy of individuals. This is mainly spurred by technological advances that independence. To illustrate, there is a wealth of information available online that allows people to learn and solve problems autonomously. From self-help tutorials to online courses, individuals can acquire skills and knowledge independently. Furthermore, people can make a living without the need for employers or colleagues. The gig economy also embodies this trend, with more people becoming self-employed, setting their schedules, and relying on only their own skillset to complete their work.

In conclusion, I believe both sides of the argument have merits. However, I think the argument for interdependence is stronger. While technology has undoubtedly provided avenues for individual autonomy, our daily lives are intricately connected to the actions and contributions of others. Even in scenarios where individuals pursue independent endeavours, they remain embedded within a network of relationships and support systems.

Model Answer 1: Thank you for the opportunity you gave me to talk about my family. To begin with, my family has got 6 members including me. My father, mother, elder brother and two younger sisters are the roots of my existence and I love them very much.

To start with my mother , she is the sweetest person and the kindest hearted woman I have ever seen. She is creative, helpful and loving in nature. She used to work as a teacher in a college but left it when my elder brother came to this world. She still runs a small boutique business besides taking great care of her family.

My father is the cornerstone of our family and works hard to win the bread for our family. He is a great mentor for all of us. He works in a large private company as a Vice President and he is a super dad, our inspiration and guide. He cares and loves all of us and holds himself responsible for our family’s well-being. He loves travelling and that’s why we have travelled a lot with him. He is our hero, friend and mentor.

My elder brother (John) is an exemplary young person and a son every parent would dream to have. He is very talented and works in a Bank as a System Analyst. He has a creative soul and art is his passion despite his academic background in computer engineering. He is one of the best friends I have and he is my protector.

My younger sister (Kathy) is two years junior to me and she is my soul mate. She often rivals me but more often inspires me. She is my co-worker in everything unusual or out-of-the-routine thing I do. Sibling rivalry is something I have learned from her in a positive way. She would sometimes act as if she is my mother!

The little angel and the only mischievous family member is my youngest sister Poly . She is only 9 years old and she fills our home with her angelic smile. She is sometimes annoying and argues a lot but I can’t live without her. Toys, computer games and her pot plants hold her attention for the major part of the entire day. She loves to grab attention and complains about everyone just to grab some extra attention and affection.

The famous saying ‘Blood’s thicker than water’ is quite true as I feel most comfortable and blessed being with my family members. I am sure I am lucky to have such a happy family where everyone has great contributions to help me become the person I am.

Sample Answer 2: Living without a family is really difficult. On the other sides, if there are more family members, it is also irritating as well, at least in my opinion. Hence, people often develop the idea that having a moderate family member is the best way to live happily in a family. They are correct in some senses. The family is the most fundamental concept of the human race and we are very closely connected with our family members.

I live with my parents in Naples in Italy. I have four other family members. My dad, mum and two younger brothers and a sister. We are six altogether. This is a recent trend in Italy. But earlier, the trend of a family was completely different. People used to live in a joint family. At the same time, they had strong bonding with the other family members. A similar thing is also found in the present days, but not frequently. My paternal and maternal uncles also share a solid bond with my family and often they visit us regardless of occasions.

My dad has his own business of clothing. He owns a store in the local market. This is a moderate size shop and five employees work with him. On the other side, my mum is a school teacher. She is a teacher of Social Science in the school. She is one of the most popular teachers in her school and spends half of the day at the school. In fact, my mum is busier than my dad is. She is to take care of her school duties and at the same time, she is to care for the domestic chores. I am a university student and a graduating in History while my younger sister is in her secondary level and my brothers are in his ninth and seventh grade. We are a happy family but sometimes I have trouble with the youngers on some petty issues. Then my mum resolves them and has words with us all.

My family members look like similar but they are a bit different in nature. My dad is a sincere person. He loves to take care for each of the family members. My mum is also similar to dad. She takes care of all the family members even in her busiest time of the day. I have seen that my dad does not respond to my emergencies always and remain busy with his works. While it is my mum who is always there for me whatever the emergencies are. My younger sister is careful about everything except her studies. She loves to spend time with her friends and continue chatting with them using the social media platforms. This is also the case for my brothers. But they are a bit addicted to video games. So, they mostly spend the time of the day with the Xbox.

The overall relationship with my family members is excellent. I love my family than any other thing in the world. My dad takes care of the entire family and bears almost all the expenses. In fact, he is the key wage earner for the family. My mum also earns but the amount is insignificant comparing to dad’s income. But both of them tries to keep us happy. I am trying to support to the family income and working as a part-timer at my dad’s business. Often my youngers demand some of their stuff to me and I try to buy the things for them with my earnings. As a result, the relations have become deeper with my youngers and me. I am proud of my happy family.

Answer: Thank you a lot for this wonderful topic. I would be very much delighted to talk about my family. We have got a nuclear family and this is quite common for the people in the city areas to have the nuclear family. Rural areas still have many joint families but unfortunately, the tradition is changing rapidly.

Our family has five members including me. My father works as a production manager (PM) in a car manufacturing company and my mum teaches English literature in a girl’s school in our area. Both of them are very caring and sincere and they are quite friendly to us. I am the eldest son (…say, daughter, if you are a girl…) of my parents and I have got a sister who is 19 years old and a brother who has turned to 12 recently.

My sister’s name is Jill and she is a very talented and inventive individual. She is the top scorer in her class and a creative artist. She can also dance and have won many local and national prizes for her outstanding performance in dance, debate, and art competitions. I love her very much and she is very fond of me. My younger brother, Kyle, is a very good soccer player and he likes to spend time with me. He often says that I am his best buddy and this is something I am really proud of. Since my parents had always been caring and friendly to us, I also wanted to be like them to my siblings. When Kyle is not at his school, he either plays soccer or hand out with his friends. At home, he mostly watches TV programmes, which we often do together, plays computer games or read books.

I am 27 and I work in a private company for the last 3 years and a junior executive. I have now planned to continue my higher studies in a renowned foreign university.

We live in (… say the city and area name…) . We have got a duplex villa and we love our house. We often have guests at our home and my mother cooks special menu whenever we have guests at our home. We eat our dinner together as a family and share our stories and events with our parents. My father often takes us outside to enjoy movies or to eat at a good restaurant. We enjoy this outing a lot and we look forward to going outside together. Usually, we do it twice in a month. I must say that I am very lucky and happy to have such a great family. I wish we live happily forever and our family tie always remains as intact as it is now.

To answer the question ‘how important my family is to me’- I would say my family is the whole world to me. I love my parents and my siblings more than anything in this world. They have done (and still doing) a lot for me. My mother is the kindest person I have ever met and her sacrifices for us are unparalleled. As I have grown up now, I know how much it means to a father or a mother to have a child. As the firstborn among our siblings, I was my parent’s whole world and the centre of their universe. Similarly, my family is the root of my very existence. I love them and would be ready to do anything and everything for them.

The topic of family and friends is a common one in the IELTS exam. It can arise in any section, but it’s probably most common in the speaking test. Being able to talk fluently about your family and friends is therefore important. In today’s article, I will show you how to boost your IELTS score by mastering this topic.

Family and Friends Vocabulary

There are certain words I’m going to assume that all my readers already know:

Best friend

These are the basics and you should be confident enough to talk simply about your family or friends with this vocabulary. However, there are some words that are a bit more advanced and may make your English sound more fluent.

Speaking Test

In the speaking exam, the topic of family or friends could come up at any time. In parts one and two you might be asked to talk about:

Your experiences as a child
Things you do with your friends

Your best friend and how you met

In part three the questions would of course get more abstract and challenging , and require more complex answers:

The best age to get married
Gender roles at home
Personality traits and relationship success
Discipline and children
The role of elderly people in society

Let’s tackle some of these questions using vocabulary from the PPT above.

Q: Do you live with your parents? A: No, I moved out of my parents’ house last year. Now I’m living with a few of my BFFs in an apartment near my university. Q: What do you do with your friends on the weekend? A: My besties and I go into town and hang out at the mall. Sometimes we catch a movie at the cinema.

Describe a family, other than your own, that you know well.

You should say:

How you know this family
Who the members of the family are
What they do and what they’re interested in

And explain how you feel about the family

There’s a family I knew growing up who stayed across the street from me. They were very different to my family because the mother and father were very strict with their daughters. While I was allowed to go out with my friends and come home late, they were usually made to stay at home and study all the time. There were two daughters and they were twins, although you would hardly know it because their personalities were so different. I wish I’d known them better because they seemed pretty nice, but their parents scared me a little. The girls were quite shy but sometimes they’d play tennis in the front garden. Their parents did allow them to go and play tennis with other kids, which was a shame. I don’t really know what happened to them because my family moved away when I was eleven and I never saw those people again. I always felt sorry for the girls because they had so little freedom, but I could tell that their parents really cared for them and just tried to protect them.

You might also be asked about your friends, in which case you could answer with information like this:

Q: Is it wrong for parents to hit their children? A: I think that’s probably never acceptable for a parent to hit a child because there are so many other better ways to instill discipline. When a child gets hit by their mum or dad – even just a light smack – it scares them and probably does psychological damage.

Writing Test

The topic of family and friends may also appear in the IELTS writing exam . In this case it would come up in Task 2 and probably relate to a discussion about the role of parents and the protection of children. Often you will be asked about your opinion relating to gender roles in a marriage. Here are some examples of questions that might appear in the IELTS writing task 2:

Some people believe that children should be allowed to stay at home and play until they are six or seven years old. Others believe that it is important for young children to go to school as soon as possible. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Some people think that mothers should spend most of their time raising their children, and therefore the government should support them financially. Do you agree or disagree? It is generally acknowledged that families are now not as close as they used to be. Give some reasons why this change has happened and suggest how families could be brought closer together. Include any relevant examples from your experience. These days more fathers stay at home and take care of their children while mothers go out to work. What could be the reasons for this? Do you think it is a positive or a negative development?

As these sorts of questions are very common, you should try to prepare by writing practice essays often in your spare time. Pay attention to the time when you are practising. It is easy to write a good essay in 90 minutes, but can you do it in 40 minutes?

It is important for this section of the exam that you can adequately structure your essay . Also make sure to read the question fully and answer it precisely. Don’t just write an essay about the topic of family or else you may end up being penalized for failing to address the actual question.

Listening Test

Well, I’ve always looked up to my grandfather, so I can tell you about him.

My grandfather is a retired engineer and worked his entire life in the oil industry. He was one of the chief engineers on many important projects and was known for being conscientious, reliable and hard-working.

Despite his busy work schedule, my grandfather was always able to spend quality time with me and my brothers and sisters when we were growing up. He would take us on picnics, play chess with me, and tell us stories about his travels and adventures. He has always been very supportive , and I have learned a lot from him about the importance of hard work, perseverance, and providing for your family. I’d like to think that I take after him to some degree.

Nowadays, my grandfather is retired, but he still keeps himself busy with hobbies and interests. He has a passion for woodwork, and he spends many hours in his workshop creating quite impressive pieces of furniture and crafts. Like me, he also really enjoys reading, so you’ll often find him absorbed in a book. Actually, we like to read similar books so we’ll often share recommendations, especially for books about history or biographies.

I look up to my grandfather for his achievements, his intelligence and for the importance he puts on family bonds . He’s always been a role model for me and I think he’s set a good example, not just for me, but for my siblings too. I’m really grateful to still have him in my life.

I think that being brought up in a big nuclear family with brothers and sisters is generally positive. It helps children develop important social skills, such as cooperation and communication. Siblings provide companionship too, so you won’t get lonely, and later in life brothers and sisters can be supportive when you have a problem. Having said that, brothers and sisters don’t always see eye to eye, and sibling rivalry can sometimes be a problem.

2. Is it good to have a large extended family?

Generally speaking, I think having lots of relatives is a good thing as it really helps to have a close-knit group of supportive family members in your life. It’s also great if you have kids as they will have lots of cousins to play with, and family members can help you with childcare too. However, unfortunately, it can also create conflicts and rivalries , especially over issues like inheritance, and I know several cases of rifts that have developed in families, with siblings who refuse to talk to each other.

3. What role should grandparents play in bringing up children?

For me, grandparents should play an important role in raising children. They’re usually retired so they have the chance to spend quality time with kids when the parents are busy with work. They also have a lot of life experience and can be a role model that their grandkids can look up to . I think it’s also good for the elderly to have the companionship from spending time with their grandchildren. Sometimes elderly people without children and grandkids can get quite lonely.

4. How has the size of families changed in your country in the last 20 years?

In my country, the size of families has changed significantly in the last 20 years. With changes in the economy and society, nuclear families have become much smaller. These days a lot of couples don’t have children until they’re in their 30’s and often only have one child. I think that in the future, extended families are going to be really small, and kids may not have any aunts, uncles or cousins.

5. What is more important, family or friends?

I think that both family and friends are important, and that it is possible to have a good balance between the two. Both family and friends can be supportive , but I’d say you should be able to rely on family members for help and support when you really need it. I think although having a good circle of friends is nice, having a close-knit family and strong bonds with your brothers, sisters and cousins is key to having a happy life. Only family can offer unconditional love , so ultimately, they are most important.

6. What do you think about single parent families?

I think that single parent families aren't ideal, and can face many challenges, but they can still offer the unconditional love kids really need when they’re growing up. Single parents often have to play many roles and take on many responsibilities, so this can be a struggle, both emotionally and financially. However, single parent families can also be very close-knit and strong, and they can still provide a loving and supportive environment for children.

How are you and the family? I wanted to let you know about a party I’m organising for Grandma. We’re going to hold the party on the 5th at my house seeing as we have a big place and there will be plenty of room for everyone. We’re going to start early, at 11am, as Grandma usually likes to have a nap around 3pm. As you’ve been to my house before, you know the best way to get here is by car. I’ll send you an email with the address and directions later in case you've forgotten the route to get here.

I really hope you can come as I know Grandma will be thrilled to see you and your kids. You know how important family bonds are to her. It’ll be a great chance to catch up with everyone and spend some quality time together too. On top of that, Uncle James and Aunt Jane are coming over from Canada and I’m sure they’d love to see you.

It is commonly thought that families are not as close-knit as they were previously. In my opinion this could be the result of changes in society that have made it harder for people to spend quality time with family members. In order to address this problem, it’s important that people make more effort to stay in touch with family, and they can leverage modern communication devices and applications to do this.

As a result of various changes in society it is much harder for people to maintain close ties with their families than previously. For one, in the past, people tended to live very near relatives during their whole lives, whereas in today’s world this is not the case. These days, people are more mobile and regularly move to different cities or even countries in order to find a better job, take advantage of better education or for some other opportunity. This makes it more difficult to socialise with relatives and therefore more difficult to maintain close relationships. Furthermore, people’s lives are busier today than they were in the past. We have a plethora of work and personal responsibilities, not to mention all of the recreational and personal development opportunities now available. This means that it is even harder to find time for family. People are often only able to focus on providing for their nuclear family , at the expense of bonds with siblings , cousins and other members of our extended families .

One solution to the problems causing weakening family relationships is for people to prioritise their family members and make more effort to foster family relationships. People should get together with relatives more frequently and spend more quality time together. For example, they could organise a weekly meal together, or a regular family day out. As a consequence of these activities, family members would likely become closer. Moreover, even if a person lives far away from their relatives, in the modern world we have a myriad of technologies which enable us to stay in touch. Be it on Skype, Messenger, or any similar application, people can message and speak to their siblings , parents or others quickly and cheaply. By doing this, people who live far apart from their family members would still be able to remain close with them.

In conclusion, changes in society have made it harder for people to maintain strong family bonds . However, if we make a little more effort, and take advantage of the communication technologies now available, there’s no reason why we can’t sustain close relationships no matter where we live or how hectic our lives are.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is like a strong pillar for me, on which I can rely blindly anytime I require support. From my family, I have learned the social graces of loyalty & cooperation.

A person without family and its love never becomes completely happy in his/her life. I am complete and happy with my family that includes five members. Growing under the supervision of a caring and loving family will increase our social values and overall well-being. Each member of my family carries out equal responsibility in sculpting the strong bonding needed for a better future and develop moral importance in each other.

My father owns a successful business of office stationery store. He uses the money to cover all our expenses and give a better lifestyle to the family. He works hard day and night to get us better education, food, home, etc. He hides all his tiredness when he comes home after a long day to spend quality time with us.

My mother is a talented homemaker who also does a part-time tailoring at home. She does all her duties with at most interest, from taking care of us to all the household chores and finds time to pursue her passion as well. She is a multi-tasker and does all the tasks from helping us in our studies to preparing delicious healthy foods to sculpt us into a better human being.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Whatever be the situation we are facing, our family will never leave us alone. My family is a blessing for me and I value everyone in my family with equal respect and love.

Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. Every family has those things, acts and values that they hold in high esteem and they cherish so much. These vales have become a part of them: most times, it is what distinguishes the traits in each family and in some ways it makes or mars the future of the family members. 1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

The prevalence and accessibility of such events explains why family meals are now uncommon.

This phenomenon is negative for families but positive for society overall. Reduced time with one’s family can lead to psychological problems as a person must feel loved by family members to maximize healthy growth. One method of achieving this unconditional sense of security is through family meals. However, there are other ways for a family to be close and the opening up of society beyond the household is a massive boon for individuals. People who were stuck at home and bored now have a variety of entertainment options and live overall more fulfilling and richer lives. For example, a person who often goes to concerts will likely make friends from various backgrounds and form lasting memories with them.

If you were to score this essay, how much would you give it? *Today, family members eat fewer meals together. Why is this? Is this a positive or negative trend? There has been a noticeable escalating trend of family members eating fewer meals together in recent times. This predicament, in my point of view, is and should be considered a devastating societal emergency. I believe that this problem is mainly caused by the lack of proper communication between the adults and the kids and despite what merits technology has brought to the table, it too has a hand in causing this predicament.

Commencing with the first cause of this situation, the lack of proper communication skills between the adults and the younglings. To demonstrate the affect of this cause, consider a family where the grownups haven’t really formed a great bond with their kids or younger siblings. This indirectly causes the phenomenon where everyone feels separated from each other and cause them to lack an interest in having good together time with the family. Which then directly correlate to them not insisting or caring about having meals together.

Moving on to my second point. As stated in the begging, while the advancement in technology has brought many advantages, it unfortunately has caused a lot of people to disconnect from reality and submerge themselves in the never-ending world of the internet. This disconnection from reality causes a lot of family problems, where everyone in the house is too busy talking too friends or scrolling through social media. So, this trivially leads to the problem at hand, having fewer meals together as a family because they’d rather continue what they are doing instead of enjoying a happy family time together at the dinner table.

To recapitulate, unquestionably, this problem today’s society is very damaging to the building blocks of society. People not focusing on enjoying the good times with their family is concerning and should be taken seriously.

The questions relate to the Speaking test because this part of the exam offers the broadest range of possible questions on this topic. They give the best opportunity for me to demonstrate the vocabulary and for you to practise using it.

I’ve included IELTS-style questions and answers for all three parts of the Speaking test. I've highlighted keywords and phrases in bold .

IELTS-Style Speaking Test Questions and Answers

Common family vocabulary is highlighted in bold .

1) How many people are there in your immediate family?

Four people make up my immediate family – my dad, my sister and my two bothers . They all live close to me except for my youngest brother who moved away because of his work.

2) Do you get along well with your family?

Most definitely. I used to argue with my brothers and sister a lot when we were. It was sibling rivalry I guess but we get on really well now.

3) Which member of your family are you closest to?

I’d have to say my sister but we’re a close-knit family and we all get along just great.

4) How much time do you spend with your family?

We used to go to my parent’s house for Sunday tea every few weeks but since my mother died, my oldest brother , my sister and I take turns to spend time supporting our father . This means that we don’t all get together so often. However, we still have family gatherings on special occasions.

5) When did you last have a family party?

Just a few weeks ago. It was for my father’s birthday. We had a get-together at his house and we all took along cakes and snacks to share.

Describe a family celebration that you attended.

You should say:

where this celebration was held
why it was held
what you did at the event

and explain what you enjoyed about the celebration.

One of the most memorable family events of recent years was my father’s 80 th birthday. We wanted to have a special celebration for him but decided to keep it a secret so as to surprise him on the day.

My youngest brother , who lives two and a half hours drive away from the rest of my immediate family , told Dad that he’d come down with his family so we could all go out for a meal together. What we actually did was to invite members of our extended family to come as well without my father knowing. Most of them live a long way away, like in London or Scotland, so we don’t see them very often. They came down the day before and stayed in local hotels.

There was a lot to arrange and it was difficult to sort everything without Dad guessing what we were up to. There were several times when I thought he must know something was going on but was just playing along and pretending he didn’t.

We booked a table at a local restaurant and on the day, my sister decorated it with balloons and other party bits and pieces. It looked amazing. It was a very long table as in the end there were more than twenty family members at the meal. So, as well as my parents and my siblings , there were also nieces , nephews , aunts , uncles and cousins . I think it was probably the biggest family gathering we’d ever had.

We arranged for Dad and Mum to be the last to arrive so that everyone else could be seated at the table waiting for them. I’ll never forget Dad’s face when he walked into the restaurant. He hadn’t guessed what we were arranging and it was a real surprise to him to see everyone there.

We had a lovely meal together but the best thing was spending time with all our relatives . It made me realize what a close-knit family we are even though we don’t see each other very often. I think that Dad enjoyed it too and I hope it showed him how much he means to our whole family .

1) In what ways can people in a family be similar to each other?

Both immediate and extended family members often have a lot of similarities. For example, they can look alike . My brother Steve is the spitting image of our cousin Peter, while my sister takes after our mother in the way she both looks and talks.

Also, relatives may be good at the same things or do similar types of work. Most of my extended family are either teachers or scientists.

Specific interests often run in the family . In my family , we all love the outdoors and nature, particularly the older generation . Younger family members do like to go out walking as well but now that my nieces and nephews are all teenagers , they spend a lot of time on their electronic gadgets.

The final way that people in a family can be alike is in their personality, and especially in their sense of humour.

2) In terms of personality, are people influenced more by their family or by their friends?

In my opinion, personality is mostly hereditary . I think that the main traits of a person’s character are passed down from parents to their offspring . Some people are more like their father , others more like their mother but most of us can recognise characteristics of both parents in our own personality. For example, I’m quiet like my dad and have my mum’s creativity.

How children are raised also affects the way they think, feel and behave as they grow up. Kids from a happy, stable family background generally have a normal personality. However, an unhappy childhood , which may include some form of abuse, will definitely affect a child’s mental development and their character later in life.

This suggests that personality can change so it’s probably true that the people we spend time with as friends and colleagues also influence the way we think, feel and behave. However, I don’t think that they alter our deepest character.

So in conclusion, I’d say that an understanding of personality is quite complex and involves both hereditary and social factors.

3) How has the role of elderly people in the family changed in recent times?

In the past, the older generation was highly respected in most cultures. They were considered to be wise because of all the things they’d learnt in their long lives. Elderly family members would have been family leaders, teachers and spiritual guides to the younger generation . They helped to maintain the structure and stability of the family .

One of their most important roles was to pass on the old traditions and to maintain traditional culture. The other vital job they did, especially the grandmothers , was to provide childcare for their grandchildren . They would certainly have played an important role in their upbringing .

In my country, most of this changed when it became normal for adult children to move away to study and get better jobs. Family ties are no longer so strong and elderly people aren’t respected as they once were. Grandparents aren’t the people we usually go to for advice these days. To be honest, many elderly people don’t have a significant role in most families any more. However, many do still look after the grandchildren if they live close to them.

Family Vocabulary Set 1: Types of Family

family – a group of people who are related to each other

- Mohit was very nervous when he met his girlfriend’s family for the first time.

immediate family – your closest relations, such as your parents, children, husband or wife

- My immediate family are my dad, mum and two sisters.

nuclear family – parents and their children

- The average nuclear family in the US is made up of parents and two children.

extended family – a family unit that includes grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, and uncles, etc. in addition to parents and children

- I have a large extended family with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

dysfunctional family – a family that is not behaving or working normally, where there is conflict, misbehaviour, etc.

- Cynthia came from a dysfunctional family and could often be seen wandering the street on her own when she was young.

Family Vocabulary Set 2: Family Members - General Terms

family member – someone who belongs to a specific family

- I have family members living all over the world.

to be related to – to belong to the same family as

- I’m related to many people in my village as my family has lived here for generations.

a relative – someone who is part of your family

- We are going to visit relatives who live on the coast for our holiday this year.

blood relative – someone you are related to through birth rather than marriage

- Aunty Sylvia is my blood relative but Uncle George, her husband, is only related to me by marriage.

distant relative – generally, a relative who is a third cousin or greater, or a great aunt or uncle, especially when you have little or no involvement with him or her.

- A member of my family died last week but they were a distant relative and I didn’t know them very well.

next of kin – the person or group of people you are most closely related to

- When you apply for a passport, you have to name your next of kin in case there is an emergency while you are away travelling.

descendants – a person who is related to you and who lives after you, such as your child or grandchild, and all future generations

ancestors – family members from past generations

- I’m writing my autobiography so that my descendants will know what life was like for one of their ancestors .

household – all the people who live in one house

- There are now only three people in my household as my older brother has gone away to university.

Family Vocabulary Set 3: Immediate family

father – a man in relation to his child or children

mother – a woman in relation to her child or children

parent – father or mother

husband – the male partner in a marriage; a married man

wife – the female partner in a marriage; a married woman

spouse – a husband or wife

son – a person’s boy child

daughter – a person’s girl child

brother – a male who has the same parents as another person

sister – a female who has the same parents as another person

big brother / older brother (or sister) – older than you

little sister / younger sister (or brother) – younger than you

- I have two younger sisters but I do wish I had an older brother .

sibling – a brother or sister

- I have three siblings , two brothers and a sister.

twin – either of two children born to the same mother on the same occasion

- My sister has just given birth to twins , a boy and a girl.

identical twins – twins who look exactly the same

- I have an identical twin brother and even our parents find it difficult to tell us apart.

an only child – a child who doesn’t have any brothers or sisters

- It can be lonely being an only child as you don’t have siblings to play with.

Family Vocabulary Set 4: Extended family

uncle – the brother of your mother or father

aunt – the sister of your mother or father

nephew – the male child of your brother or sister

niece – the female child of your brother or sister

cousin – a child of your uncle or aunt

grandparents – the parents of your parents

grandfather – the father of your mother or father

grandmother – the mother of your father or mother

grandchildren – the children of your children

grandson – the son of your son or daughter

granddaughter – the daughter of your son or daughter

Family Vocabulary Set 5: In-laws

in-laws – the relatives of your husband or wife

- When we were first married, we couldn’t afford a place of our own so lived with the in-laws .

mother-in-law – mother of your spouse

- Many people don’t get on with their mother-in-law but mine is really nice.

father-in-law – father of your spouse

- My father-in-law offered me a job in the family business so he is also my boss.

son-in-law – the husband of your daughter

- I didn’t like Amir when I first met him but he’s a great son-in-law and helps me out whenever I need it.

daughter-in-law – the wife of your son

- We are very happy that our son has decided to marry Zehra and look forward to her becoming our daughter-in-law .

brother-in-law – the husband of your sister

- My brother-in-law is lazy and not a very good husband to my sister.

sister-in-law – the wife of your brother

- I often help my sister-in-law to look after my baby niece.

Family Vocabulary Set 6: Stepfamilies

step – in the context of family relationships, ‘step’ means that you are related to the person because of one of your parents marries one of their parents

stepmother – the wife of your father, but not your biological mother

stepfather – the husband of your mother, but not your biological father

stepson – the son of your new wife or husband, but not your biological son

stepdaughter – the daughter of your new wife or husband, but not your biological daughter

stepsister – the daughter of your stepmother or stepfather

stepbrother – t he son of your stepmother or stepfather

half-brother – a brother you have only one parent in common with

half-sister – a sister you have only one parent in common with

Family Vocabulary Set 7: Parenting

parent – a person's father or mother

- I’m glad that my parents live close by as it’s easy to visit them.

motherhood – the state of being a mother

- I’d like to have children one day but I’m not ready for motherhood yet.

fatherhood – the state of being a father

- Sakda is taking the responsibilities of fatherhood seriously and now only goes out drinking with his friends once a month.

to start a family – to have children

- Billy and I are planning to start a family as soon as we get married.

to give birth – to have a baby

- It was a special moment in Cesar’s life when he saw his wife giving birth to their first child.

offspring – a person's child or children

- My two sisters are coming over later with their offspring so the house is going to be very noisy.

family man – a man who enjoys being at home with his wife and children

- Deepak used to love partying but now that he has kids he’s become a real family man .

family life – the kind of life a person normally leads when they are married and have children

- My husband and I enjoy doing lots of activities with our children and we all have a great family life together.

to raise (a child) – to take care of a child until they become an adult

- It’s a big responsibility raising children but I love being a parent.

to bring up (a child) – to raise a child

- When Jae-min’s husband died, she was left to bring up the children on her own.

upbringing – the way in which you are treated and educated when young, especially by your parents

- I was fortunate to have a good upbringing but not all children have caring parents who look after them well and teach them the right way to behave.

to support (a family) – to have enough money to be able to look after a family

- Egor earned very low wages and had to work two jobs to support his family.

breadwinner – the member of a family who earns most of the money that the family needs

- In many countries, men are expected to be the breadwinner in a family.

dependant – someone who depends on you for financial support, such as a child or family member who does not work

- I‘m working hard to get a promotion and earn more money now that I’m a husband and a father and have dependants who rely on me.

to adopt – to legally take another person's child into your own family and take care of them as your own child

- Paul and Siri were unable to have children of their own and decided to adopt a baby.

to foster – to take care of someone else’s child, usually for a limited time, without becoming the child's legal parent

- Even though I’m an only child, I always had other boy’s and girl’s to play with when I was growing up as mum and dad often used to foster other children.

over-protective parents – a parent who protect their child too much

- Overprotective parents can prevent their children from building confidence and independence.

spoilt child – a child who shows bad behaviour because they have been allowed to do or have anything they want

- I don’t like playing with the girl next door because she’s a spoilt child and gets in a temper if I don’t let her win all the games.

single parent – a person bringing up a child or children without a partner

- My sister is a single parent now that her husband has left her.

stay at home parent / stay at home mum – a parent who stays at home to take care of their children rather than going out to work

- These days, it’s far more usual for men to be a stay-at-home parent than when I was young when it was always the mother who looked after the kids.

to look after – to take care of

- I’m going to look after my daughter’s children on Saturday while she has a day out with her friends.

childcare – the care of children, especially by a crèche, nursery or childminder while parents are working

- Childcare is a big problem for many working parents and they are lucky if their own parents can help out.

strict – strongly limiting someone's freedom to behave as they wish, or likely to severely punish someone if they do not obey

- My parents are very strict with me and I have to finish all my homework before I’m allowed to play or watch TV.

authoritarian – demanding that people obey completely and refusing to allow them the freedom to act as they wish

- My father was very authoritarian when I was growing up and I was terrified of him.

Family Vocabulary Set 8: The Generations

generation – all the people of about the same age within a society or within a particular family

- It’s hard to believe how much everyday life has changed for my grandparent’s generation .

older generation – people of middle-age and older

younger generation – young adults, teenagers and children

- The older generation are often stuck in their ways, while the younger generation welcome change.

generation gap – a difference of opinions between one generation and another regarding beliefs and attitudes, often leading to a lack of understanding between them

- It’s a skilled politician who can bridge the generation gap .

teenager – a person aged between 13 and 19 years

- My lovely little boy turned into a rebellious monster when he was a teenager but now he’s a lovely young man.

adolescent – a young person who is developing into an adult

- Many adolescents develop emotional problems as they try to find their place in the world.

Family Vocabulary Set 9: Other vocabulary

sibling rivalry – the feeling of competitiveness that often exists between brothers and sisters

- There was huge sibling rivalry between my two brothers and they were always fighting but they are the best of friends now that they’re adults.

run in the family – a common feature in a family; something which is passed from parents to children

- Artistic ability seems to run in the family .

hereditary – passed from the genes of a parent to a child

- Diabetes is hereditary in our family so I make sure that I eat healthily and keep fit to lessen my chances of getting it.

childhood – the time when someone is a child

- Many children in the world do not have a happy childhood .

family background – the details of a person's family regarding education, social status, etc.

- We want our son to marry a girl from a good family background .

family gathering / family get-together – an informal event where family members meet up

- We’re having a family get-together to celebrate my mother’s birthday.

close-knit – involving groups of people in which everyone supports each other

- We’re a close-knit family and know that we can rely on each other when one of us needs help.

family ties – the sense of connection between family members

- Family ties aren’t as strong as they used to be in my country because relatives often live many miles apart and even in different countries.

to care for – to provide the things someone needs, especially someone who is young, old, or ill

- In my country, sons and daughters are expected to care for their elderly parents.

a widow – a woman whose husband has died

- Her husband died young and she has been a widow for almost thirty years now.

a widower – a man whose wife has died

- My mother died last year so my father is now a widower .

to desert – to leave someone without help or in a difficult situation and not come back

- My father deserted us when I was young and my mother has brought me up on her own.

Family Vocabulary Set 10: Idioms

There are many idioms about the family but I’ve chosen just a few that might prove a useful addition to your family vocabulary. Pick only one or two to learn and make sure that you know how to use them 100% or they won’t make sense.

If you’re unsure about them, give them a miss rather than risking sounding silly.

get on with / get along with – to like someone and have a friendly relationship with them

- I used to fight with my siblings when we were young but I get on with them really well now that we’re adults.

to fall out with / to have a falling out – to have a disagreement which ruins a relationship with that person

- I fell out with my sister when she started dating my boyfriend.

- The two brothers had a falling out over the broken toy.

on speaking terms – friendly enough to talk

- My parents had a big argument and are not on speaking terms at the moment.

to look alike – to look very similar to someone else

- My twin sister and I look alike and people often call us by each other’s names.

to take after (someone) – to be very similar to an older family member

- Mila was excellent at drawing. She took after her mother who was a famous artist.

a chip off the old block – the person is very similar (in character and personality) to one of their parents

- Sanjay is always cracking jokes, just like his father. He’s a real chip off the old block .

to follow in someone’s footsteps – to do the same thing as someone else did previously, especially someone in your family

- I want to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor like he is.

spitting image – to look extremely similar to someone

- Cher is the spitting image of her mother.

wears the trousers – to be the person in a family who holds the authorit y and makes decisions

- My dad likes to thinks that he’s in charge but it’s my mother who wears the trousers in our house.

black sheep (of the family) – someone who brings shame to their family by being different or doing something wrong

- My brother first started getting into trouble with the police when he was a teenager and he’s become the black sheep of the family.

My father is a government employee. He has been doing his job for 20 years. He is a hard worker and honest person. My mother is a housewife with a very compassionate heart and workaholic mind. My sister is studying in 12 th standard.

No, I wish they would live with me. However, they prefer noise free and serene environment of village. So, they live in my hometown. But I visit them whenever I get time in the vacation. Sometimes they come to our place to give us some time. We enjoy their company a lot especially my grandfather.

Yes, definitely. We are very much close to each other. We care for each other. There is a respect for elders and love for Youngers in my family. My father always respects my grandfather and mother and so do I.

We are emotionally attached to each other. There is a strong sense of responsibility in my family. I feel privileged to have such a family.

Do you think family’s support is important for getting ahead in life?

Certainly, family support is the first thing required in getting ahead in life. Family helps in taking good decision either for study or business. It also fulfills the financial requirements. The most important thing which family gives us the moral support. We never get tired of fighting the world if our family is in support.

Well, all members of my family are close to my heart. But I feel my mom has same mindset and personality as I. in that sense I am having more conversation and spending more time with my mom as compared to any other members of my family.

Of course, living in joint families is far better than living in a nuclear family . There are numerous reasons. Usually there is more emotional support in a joint family. We can share our problems with other family members. By that way we can feel relaxed, and our problems will also get sorted out.

Well according to me, one should not live in a nuclear family unless and until some circumstances arise. But that’s what I believe. There are myriad people who are in favor of living in a nuclear family.

There are some benefits of living in a nuclear family. First of which is a privacy. Some people give utmost importance to privacy specifically the people of today’s generation. One more benefit we can enlist here is the less conflict between members. As there are fewer members in nuclear family. The chances of dispute are also less.

It is actually debatable whether the families in the past were closer or todays. As far as I believe families in the past were closer than today’s families. The very first reason I see is the overuse of technology in today’s generation.

Nowadays, every family member is bust in his mobile. He does not get time even to look from his mobile. It is actually an addiction. In the past mobiles were not there so families had plenty of times together. They talked frequently.
