Entry criteria

In order to be considered for entry, you must have completed:

a bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, or a two-year masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study with a minimum weighted average of 80% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent across all first and second year subjects. Or a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent.

English language requirements:

IELTS (academic English Only): Overall 7.0 (with written 7.0 and no band less than 6.0) TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 + ; Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13; Pearson Test of English Academic: 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50 Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill

Your supervisors’ role

Your supervision team will:.

  • Guide and support you through all stages of your candidature and ensure you have access to necessary  resources and facilities to complete your research project.
  • Assist you to develop your research topic, questions, methodology and milestones for successful completion.
  • Provide constructive feedback on your written work and oral presentations within a reasonable agreed timeframe and provide detailed, specific and constructive feedback on thesis drafts.
  • Mentor you through the research process, providing support as you undertake new  tasks, and ensure that administrative work like ethics applications are completed or responded to in a timely way.
  • Maintain an agreed schedule of regular individual meetings with you.
  • Help you identify appropriate skills training and  professional development opportunities , including academic skills, external engagement (internships, industry mentoring programs), sessional teaching and PhD Program participation.
  • Help you  grow your professional networks by encouraging and supporting you to engage with the research community, both locally and internationally.
  • Be accessible to a reasonable extent via email, online or in person, should support be needed outside of the agreed meeting schedule.
  • Promptly attend to administrative tasks like progress reviews, requests for leave of absence or candidature variations.
  • Be familiar with, introduce you to and provide advice on all relevant University policies, including the  Graduate Research Training Policy and those on the conduct of research, ethical requirements, safe working practices, intellectual property and authorship.
  • Adhere to the  Principles of Respectful Supervisory Relationships , be considerate of wellbeing and, where appropriate, alert you to wellbeing services.
  • Advise on where to seek confidential advice and explain the process of making a formal complaint if difficult situations cannot be resolved, understanding that you may consult other individuals, including the Advisory Committee chair or confidential advisors, if you wish to raise any concerns.
  • Different members of your supervision team will contribute to your supervision in different ways but should work as a team to support you.

Advisory committee

Your supervision team is supported by your Advisory Committee , which should comprise of at least three people, including the advisory committee chair and your supervisors, which will be established at commencement.

The committee has a formal role in monitoring the progress of your research project and an informal role in providing you with support and advice.

If you are experiencing issues or have matters you feel you cannot raise with your supervisors, you should consult an advisory committee member in the first instance.The roles and responsibilities of supervisors and advisory committee members are also outlined in the Graduate Research Training Policy .

The University at Albany Libraries are seeking a graduate student to assist with a student outreach initiative: Library Ambassadors. Library Ambassadors are undergraduate and graduate students who engage in conversations on the UAlbany Libraries and promote library resources, services, and events to the campus community. 

The Outreach and Marketing Graduate Assistant will support the execution of a strategic marketing plan for recruiting students for this volunteer program and aid in the training program for new recruits. Learning how to successfully manage and create engaging content for library social media accounts, with a primary focus on Instagram, will also be a responsibility. The successful candidate for this position may also be assigned additional small projects as they relate to student outreach. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the execution of cohesive marketing, recruitment, and training of students for the University Libraries’ Library Ambassador program. 
  • Assist in the management and creation of content for the libraries’ social media accounts with a focus on Instagram. 
  • Help create and assist with library outreach activities. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements: 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be enrolled in a University at Albany graduate degree program on a full-time basis during each semester of work. 
  • A friendly public service-oriented attitude is a must. 
  • Self-motivated: able to complete tasks in a timely manner and make significant progress with minimal supervision. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability in using social media platforms to communicate or market to diverse populations, or a strong interest in learning this skill. 
  • Strong computer skills, especially as they relate to the creation of multimedia items and content. 
  • Flexibility in adjusting to new outreach-related assignments as needs arise. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with customer service atmosphere and a diverse population. 
  • Interest in working in libraries or information science field, particularly in relation to library outreach and marketing.  
  • Experience with creating and editing both short and long format videos. 

Hours/Compensation: 

20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Most work will be performed during the traditional workweek (Monday-Friday, 9:00 A.M.- 5:00 P.M.). Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required. Student may work during semester breaks and intersession hours, though this must be discussed with the supervisor beforehand.  

Stipend of $10,779 for the 2024-2025 academic year and a tuition scholarship for nine (9) graduate credits per semester at the in-state rate. 

The work of this position is intended to be performed in-person and on-site at the University Library on the uptown campus.

This program is ideal for students holding undergraduate degrees in areas outside of business/commerce whose goal may be to assume a managerial position in the marketing and communications field.

The program is also offered as a 1.5 year full time option (part-time equivalent available for domestic students) if you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in business, commerce or a related discipline.
