malignant movie review in tamil

Now streaming on:

There’s a dopey twist at the end of and a lot of dead air throughout “Malignant,” a 111-minute long possession thriller about a woman who’s haunted by a vindictive killer who may or may not be her imaginary childhood friend. Admittedly, the movie’s twist could have been the basis for something lurid and fun instead of over-produced and underdone. But “Malignant,” the latest horror movie directed by James Wan (“ The Conjuring ”), hangs around whenever it most needs to push its pokey plot along. Prioritizing atmosphere over plot development is one thing, but loitering about such a visually uninspired space (sorry, Seattle) can be pretty frustrating, especially in a psychodrama built around an underdeveloped heroine and her mostly implied backstory.

What’s it like to be stuck inside the head of Madison ( Annabelle Wallis ), a tortured murder suspect who can’t remember how she’s related to Gabriel (Ray Chase), a feature-less silhouette with long black hair and a bad habit of killing people? “Malignant” doesn’t provide any satisfying answers because Madison’s creators treat her like an opportunity for obnoxious shock scares instead of a fully realized character or, better yet, the emotional anchor for a feature-length horror movie.

Madison’s consistently presented as an opportunity for tacky effects-driven violence, as in her first scene, where she’s thrown head-first against a wall by her abusive husband Derek ( Jake Abel ). Madison’s pregnant at the time, and Derek, who’s obviously not long for this world, blames her for previous miscarriages, which are otherwise not visualized, or built up to in a meaningful way beyond thin expository dialogue. Stuff like “How many times do I have to watch my children die inside of you” and “maybe you need to stop getting pregnant.”

Derek soon gets got: he dies by Gabriel’s wispy hands, and in a scene that looks suspiciously like a cut scene from Wan’s “ Insidious ” movies. Wan seems to love this style of strawman drama. First, he presents us with the canned set-up for a confrontation, then we watch him slowly resolve tension through scare tactics that make the American-produced J-horror remakes of the mid-'00s seem cutting edge. Flickering television and phone screens, unexpected faces reflected in glass surfaces, and gaunt wraiths who all seem to shop at Hot Topic. These are fine enough elements for a horror movie, but not when they’re built up to such a laughable degree, and without much visual flair or distinction. Almost every set piece or kill scene feels anticlimactic.

Madison’s friends and family members are also used as props to set up more clammy scare scenes. It’s almost as if Wan, who shares a story credit with Ingrid Bisu , and screenwriter Akela Cooper , don’t trust their audience enough to know or care about anything beyond Powerpoint-style bullet point dialogue, like when dreamboat policeman Kekoa Shaw ( George Young ) tells Madison’s suspicious sibling Sydney ( Maddie Hasson ) that “the doctor said your sister had three miscarriages in the last two years.”

Sydney doesn’t have much of a personality, but that’s presumably so that Madison can later describe her sister as the sort of “blood connection” that she’s always “yearned for,” but took for granted, despite being “right in front of me all along.” And Kekoa’s supposed to be cute, I guess, so fellow cop Winnie (Bisu) can awkwardly swoon over him: “we need to find that missing half” he says, speaking about Gabriel’s half-missing murder weapon, to which she says, “Yeah, don’t we all?” There's no follow-up to that tossed-off line, because these characters don’t seem to matter to each other beyond setting up the next shock scare.

Wan’s never been the most technically adept or sophisticated storyteller, but his weaknesses as a filmmaker are especially apparent throughout. In one especially embarrassing scene, Wan cross-cuts between Madison and Kekoa, who’s seated next to his lollipop-sucking partner Regina ( Michole Briana White ), as Madison tells the cops who’s responsible for all the murders.

It’s Gabriel, of course, and we know that already, so it’s hard not to laugh when the camera pushes in on Young and White as Madison explains that “the killer said he was Gabriel.” Back to them, waiting with baited death. “My Gabriel.” The strings section goes crazy on the soundtrack. Regina pauses, and shakes her head. Still in the extreme foreground: Young, now looking down and off-camera. His head takes up a third of the screen and is out of focus. “Wait, you’re saying that the killer is…your imaginary friend?” The answer to that question, and a few others await you in “Malignant,” a horror movie that is as long as it is underwhelming.

What to Know

Although Malignant isn't particularly scary, director James Wan's return to horror contains plenty of gory thrills -- and a memorably bonkers twist.

Love it or hate it -- and there isn't much in between -- Malignant is one horror movie that takes risks and is willing to get weird.

Andhagan Review :

Prasanth Starrer Andhagan Movie Review gan

Prasanth Starrer Andhagan Movie Review gan

‘Andhagan’ movie review: Prashanth makes a splendid comeback with this imperfect yet satisfactory remake

Prashanth and simran carry ‘andhagan’, a faithful remake of ‘andhadhun’ on their able shoulders, making sriram raghavan’s brilliant source material the perfect comeback vehicle for the duo.

Top Star Prashanth is back! After headlining Johnny , the Tamil remake of Sriram Raghavan’s Bollywood film Johnny Gaddaar , it’s Andhadhun’s remake this time and Prashanth makes a brilliant comeback with Andhagan , helmed by his father and filmmaker Thiagarajan.

Prashanth isn’t particularly reknowned for his acting prowess; he peaked during the era when ‘the chocolate boy’ was a category of protagonists and known for his charming screen presence, he banked on the bandwagon of films that relied on his other talents like action and dancing. Hence, it’s no wonder Andhagan will be his best performance in probably decades thanks to the excellent source material.

As a pianist, pretending to be visually impaired in the name of an “experiment”, Andhagan’s Krish gives Prashanth the perfect space to showcase his talents and the experienced actor laps it up. Be it the scenes where he witnesses the murder of actor Karthik (Karthik) that’s orchestrated by the star’s second wife Simi (Simran) and her paramour Manohar (Samuthirakani), or the comparatively casual sequences where he falls in love with Julie (Priya Anand), Prashanth does a great job as a man putting on a show to deceive everyone only to be caught in his own web of lies. The film gives several opportunities for the character to indulge in moral ambiguity and as a man who barely wants to survive for a better tomorrow, Prashanth sells the character’s vulnerability and emotions well.

Andhagan (Tamil)

If you have watched Andhadhun , it might feel strange to see that the Tamil version to have even copied the “What is life? It depends on the liver” opening slide from the original film. But quick flashbacks of the tweaks Johnny had compared to Johnny Gaddaar reassured me that only a scene-by-scene remake would make this film work... and it does. So much so that it wouldn’t be an overstatement to call it a far better iteration than the Telugu and Malayalam remakes, Maestro   and Bhramam .

What makes the Tamil version stand apart predominantly, is its fantastic star cast. Inarguably, the crux of Andhadhun is Tabu’s character and with big shoes to fill, Simran had her work cut out for her. Prashanth and Simran’s characters are the living embodiment of how the duality of human nature works when stuck in a tight spot; while one tries to wiggle away to save themselves, the other would not think twice about bringing down the wall to make for a grand escape. Simran, in a powerful role after a long time in Tamil cinema, pulls it off so effortlessly that we almost forget that the duo fighting tooth and nail in Andhagan used to be one of the best onscreen couples in films like Kannedhirey Thondrinal, Parthen Rasithen, Thamizh and Jodi .

What comes as a pleasant surprise is Karthik, playing the role of the yesteryear hero trying to spice things up in life with a new wife. Be it the shot of him watching Mouna Ragam , or listening to ‘Panivizhum Malarvanam’ and ‘Kadhal Kavithaigal Padithidum’, and the music of ‘Keeravani’ playing while his character getting killed or the rendition of ‘Chandirane Suriyane’ and ‘Nenjukulle Innarunnu’, the film doubles as an homage to the thespian.

Prashanth and Karthik in a still from ‘Andhagan’

The rest of the cast do a decent job and while the recreation of the final showdown between the cheating cop and his wife might be a hit or a miss in the Tamil version, the roles played by Urvashi and Yogi Babu as the organ harvesters miss the mark by a mile. The film also lacks the zaniness of Andhadhun and some of the scenes fall flat but it’s the primary cast’s sheer performance that keeps the film in check. While the film’s songs don’t manage to stay put in our memory, the fantastic piano compositions stand apart.

Apart from turning out to be a satisfactory watch for those who have not caught Andhadhun , the film makes for a befitting comeback to Prashanth, one of Tamil cinema’s finest talents who hasn’t gotten their due. Here’s to hoping Andhagan turns out to be the rabbit’s foot for Prashanth!

'Andhagan' Review: Prashanth, Simran headline a faithful remake of 'Andhadhun'

'andhagan' review: directed by thiagarajan, the film starring prashanth and simran, stands true to its original, 'andhadhun'. the film's casting is its biggest strength..

Listen to Story

A still from 'Andhagan'

  • 'Andhagan' released in theatres on August 9
  • The film remains faithful to 'Andhadhun' and entertains for the major part
  • Directed by Thiagarajan, the film features Prashanth, Simran and Priya Anand

Release Date: 9 Aug, 2024

In 2018, director Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Andhadhun’ managed to cut across languages and won laurels. Soon, its remake rights were up for grabs. Director and actor Thiagarajan grabbed the Tamil remake rights and five years later, ‘Andhagan’, the Tamil remake, finally hit theatres. The film is quite special as it also marks Top Star Prashanth’s comeback in Tamil cinema.

Pianist Krish (Prashanth) goes about his daily work despite being blind. His brilliance at piano gets him work. One day, he gets invited to actor Karthik’s (Karthik) home for a private concert for his wife Simi (Simran) on their wedding anniversary. However, Krish witnesses Karthik’s murder, which is committed by Simi and her paramour, Inspector Mano (Samuthirakani).

Simi and Mano attempt to cover up the murder but become entangled in a web of problems that also involves Krish. What unfolds next constitutes the remainder of the story in ‘Andhagan’.

Remaking a highly successful film is no easy task. Comparisons are inevitable, and it’s a tough job to create the same magic as the original. ‘Andhadhun’ is one such film that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. In 2021, the Telugu remake, ‘Maestro’ was released and received a good response. ‘Andhagan’ took too long a time to arrive, but it is still a faithful remake that gets most things right.

Director Thiagarajan has retained the essence of ‘Andhadhun’ and scored brownie points with the terrific cast. His creative decision to include yesteryear's hits of Karthik, Prashanth and Ilaiyaraaja makes 'Andhagan' rooted.

His son and actor Prashanth (fondly called Top Star by his fans) delivers a well-executed portrayal of Krish, evoking nostalgia. The actor has been away from Tamil cinema for a while and ‘Andhagan’ is truly a comeback he deserved. From being one of the top heroes in Tamil cinema to fading out due to multiple issues, Prashanth’s career was full of ups and downs. In ‘Andhagan’, he has redeemed himself.

‘Andhagan’ is largely a scene-for-scene remake, which is why it remains effective. Casting Simran to reprise Tabu’s role is a perfect choice. Her performance lives up to the dark nature of the role and makes it compelling. Priya Anand is ideally cast in Radhika Apte’s role, and her effervescent character is tailor-made for her.

Despite being in the making for several years, ‘Andhagan’ feels fresh, thanks to the performance and the production values. For those who haven’t seen ‘Andhadhun’, the Tamil remake serves as a perfect whodunnit thriller with plenty of twists and turns. However, the graphics are somewhat tacky and could have been improved.

Veteran actor Karthik, in his over-the-top role, reminds us of his films from the 90s. Samuthirakani’s Mano was quite enjoyable, and it’s great to see him in a different role. Vanitha Vijayakumar, however, oversells her performance. Yogi Babu, Urvashi and KS Ravikumar make their characters enjoyable with their performances.

‘Andhagan’ is one of the few remakes which managed to stand up to its original. With a few flaws, such as blaming the women for infidelity and shaming them, the film turned out to be an enjoyable affair. 3 out of 5 stars for ‘Andhagan’. Andhagan movie review: Prashanth and Simran's film is faithful but unengaging remake of Andhadhun

Andhagan movie review: prashanth’s film tries desperately to match andhadhun, which was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller, and falls short..

When Hindi film Andhadhun (The Blind Man) came out in 2018, it was hailed for its intricate screenplay and inspiring performances of Ayushman Khurana, Tabu and Radhika Apte. Tamil actor Prashanth’s father, actor-producer-director Thiagarajan bought the remake rights and had made it as Andhagan. While the movie was complete in 2022, it has taken two years for it to hit theatres. (Also Read: Santhosh Narayanan distances himself from Prashanth’s The Andhagan Anthem: ‘Audio label is also playing blind’ )

Andhagan movie review: Simran, Prashanth, Samuthirakani in a still.

Prashanth essays the role of Krish, a blind piano player, in Andhagan. He lives alone with his cat and plays at a resto bar in the evenings to make his living. It is here that he meets Julie (Priya Anand) and the two become close. Yesteryear actor Karthick (who essays a similar role) is an also a frequent visitor to the bar and he falls in love with Krish’s music. Karthick invites Krish to his place for a private concert for his wedding anniversary to surprise his wife Simi (Simran). Landing up at the actor’s place, Krish finds he is not home and he receives a shock instead. There is a murder that is committed and Krish turns witness. What happens next?

The performances and more

Andhagan is a faithful remake of Andhadhun and director Thiagarajan has followed the script to a T. But having enjoyed the original Hindi film and the performances, the Tamil remake definitely falls short in numerous aspects including the casting and music.

Andhagan was a comeback vehicle for actor Prashanth who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for six years now. The 51-year-old actor who had some good films in his career, like Shankar’s Jeans, hasn’t had any big hits to speak of in the last two decades. In Andhagan, the actor looks jaded and not fresh and youthful which is imperative for the character of a charming piano player. This role was perhaps not what he should have chosen for a comeback though the movie has a good script.

Simran , on the other hand, is perfect as Simi, which was essayed by Tabu in the Hindi version. Priya Anand too is decent as Julie and numerous other characters, like Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Leela Samson and Vanitha Vijayakumar, have been thrown to add weight and comic value to the film but this doesn’t do much for it. Yesteryear Tamil star Karthick is a misfit as Simi’s husband and moreover, his dubbing doesn’t match what he’s mouthing on screen which is very distracting. Again, Samuthirakani steps in as a cop - for the umpteenth time in Tamil cinema - and obviously it’s a cakewalk for him.

Music director Santhosh Narayanan is known for his spectacular songs and BGM but in Andhagan the songs are just terrible. Krish is a talented musician and plays at a bar for his livelihood but the songs he sings are tacky to say the least. This was quite unexpected from this talented music director who just gave us the massive Kalki 2898 AD .

Thiagarajan had to turn director for Andhagan after two directors walked out of the project. Having had a template already, it would have been easy to helm this film but Andhagan hasn’t been made exciting for the audience. The Tamil narrative is flat and the twists that come don’t pop on screen but play out very matter-of-fact for the audience. Had the director taken the script and made some changes to make it more engaging in Tamil it would have helped. The dialogues by Pattukotai Prabhakar also don’t evoke any emotions in the audience as they watch Krish’s character go through an emotional roller coaster from happiness to shock to fear.

Andhadhun was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller by Sriram Raghavan that kept you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Prashanth’s Andhagan tries desperately to match the original but falls short.
