10 recommended home-based e-learning apps for primary school students.

The invisibly deadly and contagious Coronavirus (Covid-19) has sent shockwaves throughout the world and caused massive disruption to our daily lives. The alarming rate that the number of infected cases is rising does not indicate that the spread will slow down anytime soon in the foreseeable future.

On 3 April 2020, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced a series of circuit breaker measures that will be applied in Singapore to minimise further spread of Covid-19. One of the measures includes the fact that from 8 April to 4 May 2020, schools and institutes of higher learning will shift to home-based learning while preschool and student care services will be suspended.

home based e-learning apps

With the implementation of these measures, many parents have expressed their concerns about having to support their children’s home-learning activities while having to work from home at the same time as most workplaces would have to close and implement telecommuting practices. And then there’s the issue of keeping our kids occupied throughout the day so that we are able to be productive with our work tasks.

We understand your worries and totally get how you feel about the current situation. With that, our team – who are parents ourselves – has compiled a list of online learning apps to keep your children occupied in a more interactive and interesting way.

Homework apps for Singapore students

December 8, 2016 by Maths Statistics Science Tutor

08 December 2016

Homework help apps entered the Singapore market in the past year. These include services such as 24/7 homework assistance, automated learning tools or administrative support for private tutors.

At least three involve students taking pictures of the questions they need help on with their apps, which then source answers from tutors or other users, with different revenue models.

For example, Snapask sells monthly packages to student users, based on the number of questions they can ask. Tutors earn a fee per question answered.

They Are Subtracting Tricky Maths Sums From Our Lives – Just Take A Photo For A Free Answer

Samantha Tay

In this article

In 1992 , 33% of Primary to Pre-U students were taking tuition, and parents were paying $150 every month.

Fast forward to 2016, and monthly fees for a child can now cost over $2,000.

What began as help for weaker students has now become a necessity. It’s not about who needs it but rather, who can afford it – an veritable arms race.

Seeing this, innovators have also started devising ways of tapping onto this demand with EdTech, and one of them is Miao Academy.

Miao For Math

Founded by Betty and Ze Xuan, this startup has created a solution to DIY Math help.

Their app can help you solve questions and suggest similar questions for reinforcement learning. Students don’t have to type questions in either – simply snap a photo and the app will do the rest.

The app supports the K7-12 Mathematics syllabus (Primary 6 to JC year 1), as well as materials from MOOCs (online courses).

The entire platform is also free to use as “it doesn’t make sense for them to charge for content MOOCs have uploaded for free”.

homework apps singapore

3 months since their October 2016 launch, Miao Academy was downloaded over 4,500 times and their success isn’t limited to Singapore.

“We have over 22,000 sign-ups globally today and only 33% is from Singapore.”

Miao Academy is popular in US and UK, Betty says.

Although the Singapore curriculum is used as the base, it also cover elements from international curricula like the IGCSE .

Head Cats Betty And Ze Xuan

homework apps singapore

Betty has always been involved in education, with past stints at the Australian Academy of Science and private tuition. He was the same, Ze Xuan says, with previous non-profit startup OpenLectures for A-Level students.

While in NS, he met his now co-founder, who shared the idea for a platform where students could “search and access education”.

“As the more technical person, I was convinced by its potential and immediately joined the bandwagon.”

“Machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) is widely used [but] the EdTech market remains untouched. We think it’s because K-12 education contains too much specialised information and requires a lot of contextual understanding.”

“It was a problem we were keen on challenging,” Betty says.

Nowadays, students turn to Google with academic problems.

But it’s very difficult to navigate the flood of information, and things like equations and long texts are not easily available.

“We sought to fill the gap with a tool that connects content providers and student.”

Teaching: Never Easy

“We had a chicken-and-egg problem right at the start,” she says.

Without question data from users, they couldn’t train the machine to recommend content. But without a machine, neither were they able to obtain user data.

“So we improvised a rudimentary model that worked only 60% of the time.”

homework apps singapore

They searched online forums and pored over past notes and worksheets.

This helped them discover what questions students found tricky, and allowed them to build a model capable of understanding questions and recommending similar ones.

“Accuracy in recommendation is key,” she emphasises. “In e-commerce, recommendations expose you to a huge variety. But if we apply the same approach, we might scare students away with too much content!”

“Students use Miao to get help, not learn the history of geometry,” she exclaims.

An Idea In Incubation

Miao Academy is currently incubated in National University of Singapore (NUS)’s Furnace program. In addition, they are part of Microsoft’s Bizspark and SGInnovate’s TAG.PASS programs.

And for all the support they’ve received, the pair feels extremely fortunate.

“Microsoft has helped us in so many ways, not just in cloud services and a co-working space,” Ze Xuan says. “With them, we were able to organise an exclusive business marketing talk, and connect with key stakeholders in education and technology.”

Furthermore, they also received prescient advice in business and technical development, he adds gratefully.

The Cat’s Meow In EdTech

homework apps singapore

Although the app only supports Mathematics now, the team is en route to adding Physics, Chemistry and Biology – subjects universally in demand.

Others like literature however, are unlikely.

“We don’t think that is a task machines can or should do,” Betty explains. “If humans cannot agree on how we should interpret a piece of text, what makes us think a machine can do it better?”

They don’t intend to replace teachers either, she says.

“A machine is good at repetitive activities like recommending content and grading, but a human is able to adapt lessons to suit students’.

The machine might be able to do that as well after a few hundred questions, but by then the exam would be over.

Miao Academy is now in beta on the Apple Store  but the Android version will be up by September as well.

Seeing how the exams are approaching, why not try it out for yourself?

Here are 11 Online Math Tuition Platform Options in Singapore

Here are 11 Online Math Tuition Platform Options in Singapore

News of Singapore losing the top spot to China in an international student assessment has made its rounds recently on the Internet and on social media. The Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA , a worldwide benchmarking study that measures the performance of 15-year-old students from all around the globe in the following categories: reading, science, and arithmetic, has reported its latest findings, concluding that former consistent top-placer Singapore has been pushed back to second in all three categories and is now trailing behind China—a country that hasn’t even been in the top five for years.

Image from  https://www.oecd.org/pisa/PISA-results_ENGLISH.png

Despite Singapore slipping into second place, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development or OECD—the organization that conducts the study every three years to serve as an indicator of students abilities from all around the world—reports that Singapore students still “significantly outperform” their peers from 79 other countries, with the average scores of Singapore students going up. In fact, Singapore boasts of a high percentage of top performers, especially in mathematics, wherein 37 percent of Singaporean students scored high compared to the 26 percent in reading and 21 percent in science. Ultimately, Singapore students are still far more knowledgeable in all three categories as results show that the number of low-performing Singapore students has dropped.

Overall, Singapore students continue to be a global force amongst same-aged teens from other parts of the world, what with Singapore’s comprehensive and effective education system, especially in the field of mathematics.

Turning to online Maths tuition

Despite the education system’s focus on mathematics in its curricula, traditional classroom settings do not always guarantee student’s knowledge and mastery in mathematics. In fact, recent years have seen a rise in Singapore’s tuition industry, which at present is declared as a billion-dollar-industry— S$1.4 B, to be exact —as a result of Singapore’s competitive education system that ultimately is a cause and effect of its competitive economy. As average household incomes rise due in part to Singapore’s modern dual-income families, couples invest in some form of tuition for their children to avoid “losing out” to their peers and to ensure a bright future for them.

Come 2020 and it will already be a decade of trustful reliance on tuition and its benefits. Be it traditional group tuition, one-to-one private tuition, or the more technologically-advanced live online tuition for either class or individual sessions, tutoring still remains as relevant and useful as when it first started. Up to this day, countless parents continue to turn to tuition for their children, and so we have summed up in this article a comprehensive list of online maths tuition platform in the country.

Homework In Singapore - Culture or Necessity

Homework In Singapore Culture or Necessity

Homework – A Common Conversational Starter

“Did the teacher give any homework today?”

“Take out your Student Handbook and check if there is any homework.”

“Got e-learning assignment for this weekend?”

Homework is easily one of the most common topics in daily conversations between parents and their children in primary school nowadays. Ironically, more often than not, the above questions come before questions such as “ How’s your day? ” or “ What did you have for recess this morning? ”

The School Homework Policy

There is actually a set of guidelines governing the topic of homework in all schools on our lovely little red dot. It is named the School Homework Policy. It defines homework as “any learning activity” that each school requires their students to complete after school hours. The rationale for homework serves to allow educators to address learning gaps, if any, among the students in their respective subject classes. At the same time, it enables parents to gain a more accurate picture of their children’s learning progress.

What do Teachers and Parents feel about Homework?

Nonetheless, there seem to be a growing divergence in the mindsets of both educators and parents towards the concept of homework. One of the key reasons educators give homework is actually to show parents what is being covered in school. This is often communicated through instructions posted on different mediums such as the common student handbook and mobile apps like ClassDojo. In fact, ClassDojo is fast gaining popularity as the app where parents access daily to check what homework there is and to communicate with teachers any concerns they might have.

At the same time, there are increasingly more parents who feel homework takes away time from their children for leisure activities such as sports or even running about with their friends in the safety of their neighbourhood. On a more serious note, there also appear to be parents who seem to be overly involved in their children’s homework. You can probably identify them by the way they try to get their children to follow instructional techniques that differ greatly from what their teachers had used or the manner in which they give a fixed duration for their children to complete all their homework.

Is Homework Beneficial?

In Singapore, the general guideline for time spent on homework is about 30 minutes to an hour for Primary 1-2 students, 1-1.5 hour for Primary 3 and 4 students and 1.5-2 hours for Primary 5 and 6 students. Nevertheless, each school will tell you that it varies from student to student and that the above applies to the average student. So, the key question is What is an average student?

There is clearly no definitive answer to the above question. Numerous educational studies have established a positive correlation between homework and academic achievement. Hence, there appears to be proven value in the completion of homework. Nonetheless, many experienced teachers will share with you that on many an occasion, they will find, to their disbelief, that some students who steadfastly complete their homework, actually lag behind some peers who may be late or forget to complete their homework.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, educators should take into account the unique needs and circumstances of their students and families with regards to homework.

E.g. 1 - A teacher gives an extra day to a particular student for homework submission as the child is required by his parents to help out at their food stall till evening.

E.g. 2 – A student who is still mastering the foundational concepts of a topic is instructed to complete only the knowledge and comprehension-based questions rather than the application-based questions.

It's great for helping math students who fall behind.

The built-in calculator allows for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting.

It's somewhat limited depth. Wrong answers don't provide much room for learning why an answer is incorrect.

Mathematics can be one of the most challenging courses for students, with complicated steps that are quickly forgotten after a long school day. Especially challenging is that many parents struggle to help their children with subject matter that they haven't been acquainted with for years. Photomath is an excellent solution for struggling mathematicians.

Children can scan complex or simple math problems, learning how to solve them with step-by-step instructions. A built-in calculator improves the experience, allowing for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting abilities. Linear equations, logarithms, trigonometry, functions, and basic algebraic expressions are only a few of Photomath's vast capabilities.

Great music learning app with tools for learning and practicing guitar, bass, piano, and more.

Voice-overs and instructional design lack the human touch that helps when learning an instrument.

One school subject that is sadly overlooked is music. Music is an area of study that has been proven to increase a child's language and reasoning skills, fine-tune their motor skills, and decrease stress levels. So, if your child is trying to learn a musical instrument and struggling, consider investing in Yousician. This app allows students to practice guitar, bass, piano, or ukulele.

Students can practice their instruments along with the charts and diagrams that display on the screen. They'll receive real-time feedback when they miss a note or fall out of tune. Included step-by-step video tutorials are available to show your child how to be proficient in a specific skill set. Practicing an instrument has never seemed so natural. With different genres of music available, your child can quickly sort out their favorites.

Khan Academy offers solutions for all ages and skill ranges.

Quizlet Flashcards

A digital flashcard mobile platform that's suitable for all ages.

The focus on memorization is ideal for studying.

The ad-supported platform may be distracting.

User-generated content means some content may be inaccurate.

While flashcards can be an excellent method for analyzing new material, they use a large amount of paper that is eventually thrown in the trash. Learn new topics while also saving trees with the Quizlet Flashcards application. Study from existing flashcard sets or create your own.

Quizlet digital flashcards allow students of all ages to practice and excel at various topics using their smartphones. In addition to basic flashcards, Quizlet offers multiple modes to encourage different methods of memorization. If your child attends the same class as another student using Quizlet, the two can share flashcards. Those who use the app to study foreign languages can hear keywords spoken to them in over 18 languages.

PowerSchool

Allows parents and guardians to keep tabs on their child's education.

Access classroom handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

The complicated interface makes for a rather steep learning curve.

Here's an app that both children and parents can enjoy: PowerSchool Mobile. Many school districts use the PowerSchool system to manage grades and reports. If your child's school is a participant, you can use the mobile app to keep a close eye on your child's educational progress. Depending on how a teacher chooses to use the tool in their classroom, you may also have access to handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

While not every school offers support for the PowerSchool Mobile application, it is worth checking with your child's teacher to see if the option is available. Sorry kids, but it isn't possible to hide report cards with the PowerSchool app. Parents can manage what push and email notifications they receive from the child's school. You'll become more involved and aware of your child's school performance with this simple mobile app.

  • The five best apps for homework help

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

body-magic-wand-cc0

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

body-red-x-false-stop

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

Mathematics and Science Guidebooks

homework.sg  is a publishing house based in Singapore, specialising in the development of educational resources, including guidebooks and assessment books. Our journey began in 2009, when we published our first series of academic books – pocket-sized guides that help students study better for tests and examinations. Following the success of this series, we have written and published several high-quality titles that have benefitted countless students over the years.

Today, our publications cover subjects such as mathematics and the sciences for the primary, secondary and junior college ( pre-university ) levels. We work closely with our team of experienced authors, editors and illustrators. This ensures that all of our books are designed with students and educators in mind. Our publications are constantly refreshed to ensure that they remain relevant and in line with the latest examination syllabuses.

We also collaborate closely with other publishing companies in Singapore and the Southeast Asian region. That’s how we continually improve ourselves and get better at the things we do. In addition to joint publications, our in-house team has also provided high-quality publishing services to these companies, including editing, proofreading, layout and illustration.

In 2016, we have set up an online bookstore at  homework.sg . This allows students, parents and teachers from around the world to have greater access to educational resources published in Singapore. In recent years, our books have received strong attention from international students who are preparing to study in Singapore. We will continue to develop high-quality educational resources that will benefit generations of students and educators for years to come.

Publish with Us

We are always on the lookout to expand our list of titles. If you would like to publish with us, please get in touch with us by sending an email to [email protected] . We also provide publishing consultancy services to independent authors and publishing companies.

Singapore ranks third globally in time spent on homework

15-year-olds here devote 9.4 hours weekly, above global average of 5 hours: oecd study.

Students in Singapore are among the world's most hard- working at home, clocking the third-longest time spent on homework, a report released this month has found.

The country's 15-year-olds said that they devoted 9.4 hours to homework a week, in the study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

They came in behind students in Shanghai, who spend 13.8 hours a week on homework, and those in Russia, who take 9.7 hours.

Students in Finland and South Korea spent fewer than three hours - the least among the 65 countries and regions surveyed - on homework each week.

The global average was about five hours' worth of homework each week.

The report was based on results from a questionnaire in 2012 for the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), a test to measure academic achievement for 15-year-olds.

Around 510,000 students took part in the test. They were asked questions about their school environment, families and attitudes towards subjects and school.

The study found that students who did more homework scored higher in Pisa. For instance, Shanghai and Singapore, where students spent much of their time on homework, came in first and second respectively in the Pisa mathematics test in 2012.

Across the countries and regions surveyed, students who came from socio-economically advantaged backgrounds tended to devote more hours to homework.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Singapore's weekly average of 9.4 hours on homework is "fairly reasonable for upper-secondary students, who would be preparing for the national examinations".

She said: "Homework, when used appropriately, can reinforce students' learning, contribute to their progress and cultivate a healthy disposition towards learning."

But in response to parents' concerns about excessive homework in recent years, schools have adopted policies to monitor and coordinate the homework load across subjects and departments.

The MOE spokesman said: "Some teachers may get their students to complete their assignments in class or after school, rather than at home."

Swiss Cottage Secondary School student Nurul Amirah, 15, said her daily routine of homework and revision starts at 9pm and ends around midnight.

"I spend more than 10 hours on homework every week. If exams are coming, I spend at least 15 hours. But I benefit from assignments that make me think more," she said.

She added that teachers and students list homework assignments on their classroom boards, so students do not get assigned too much work at any one time.

Associate Professor Jason Tan, an education policy expert at the National Institute of Education, said: "The 9.4 hours do not seem that overwhelming, when students are taking six to nine subjects in Secondary 3.

"But (the report) also doesn't give any indication of the subjects the time is spent on, or the nature of homework, so it's hard to draw any conclusions from this."

Prof Tan added that although students in South Korea and Japan were ranked low in the number of homework hours in this survey, they were not "learning any less".

"Their students spend long hours after school in cram schools similar to tuition centres, called juku in Japan and hagwon in Korea," he said.

It is difficult to set a "right" amount of homework for everyone, said Prof Tan.

"Every student is different in terms of learning styles and interests, and each may need a different amount of time for practice."

Track and share your activities like an absolute boss with this free app

Homescreen heroes: The Relive App enables you to make the most of your adventures and share the memories you make

Relive App

If there’s one thing common to humankind—a truth that unites us all—surely it’s the power of stories. We love the experience of getting so completely lost in a book or film that we don't notice the time flying by. The retelling of events that have happened to us or others taps into something fundamental about who we are. They enable us to explore and connect with something bigger than ourselves.

And yet somehow, a story, whether lived or written, isn’t complete until it is shared. Recounting a story to a friend or family member helps cement it into our lived experience. It brings the memory to life and increases the enjoyment of it. Social media has gripped our attention and given us a way to share our daily activities with those around us. But if we want to share anything beyond the static photos or video clips we’ve taken with our phones, things become a little trickier.

That’s where this brilliant little app, Relive , comes to the rescue. With the ability to track and document journeys, the app makes it possible to turn them into engaging videos you can share with your friends. So, whether it’s a quick run, insane bike ride, or sunny hike, whatever the adventure, Relive makes it possible to record that memory in new and exciting ways.

This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps that we couldn't live without. Read them all here .

The experience of sharing your daily adventures begins with tracking your movements. Relive makes it possible to preview and navigate pre-existing routes and create your own using GPS tracking. Routes uploaded by other users could benefit from a better naming and categorizing system but if you use the map feature, everything becomes a lot clearer.

Relive App

if you’re interested in exploring a particular area, simply zoom into that part of the map and quickly see what options are available. These routes can be downloaded for offline navigation, offering an intuitive and fun way to get out into the world. I discovered some routes around my local area that I never even knew existed. I only wish that routes could be filtered by ‘circular,’ as I always prefer such journeys. Somehow, they seem more interesting.

After choosing a route or planning one myself, it was time to get my shoes on and get on the road. I used the app for walking and cycling and each activity was captured accurately. A key part of the overall process is capturing photos and videos along the way. It’s much easier to pull out your phone mid-walk than during a bike ride but forcing myself to stop at a nice view helped me take stock and be more in the present.

Relive App

I particularly felt this when using the app on my daily commute. My route goes over a beautiful bridge with a gorgeous view of a mill but I usually swiftly cycle on by with my head down, focused on getting to the office. For the first time, though, I decided to hop off the bike and enjoy the moment before recording it in the Relive app. Brilliant.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

For those already completely wedded to a tracking device with like Apple , Garmin , or Runkeeper, you can easily connect Relive so the two work seamlessly together.

Now let’s get to why I fell in love with the Relive app. When I was younger and had fewer responsibilities in life, I used to edit family videos together. They were great for collecting memories and creating something that everyone could enjoy time and again. Unfortunately, over time, because of the busyness of life, I haven’t done it in a while, which is a real shame.

Relive App

The Relive app has reinvigorated my desire, mainly because it does for you. After capturing media along the way and finishing the activity, Relive automatically creates a video for you. The default settings rarely create what I want but jumping into the ‘Customize video’ section makes it super easy to change the orientation of the video and add music. Some of these features are only available with Relive Plus, an additional #38.99/£38.99 per year, although there is a 7-day free trial.

With the generated video, all that’s left to complete the memory is to share it with the family and friends you love the most. It might be sharing your latest bike ride with your cycling buddies or the walk to your favorite coffee shop with your hipster friends. Either way, Relive will help you enjoy your adventures and give you everything you need to share them with those around you.

Download the Relive app on iOS or on Android
