Describe your favourite sport

9IELTS

Describe your favourite sport.

You should say:

  • what sport it is
  • how often you play it or watch it
  • how you play it

and explain why this is your favourite sport.

Model Answer 1: This is one of my most favourite subjects to talk, so thank you very much for this nice cue card topic. Anyway, different people choose different sports as their favourite while I have chosen my own. My favourite sport is football, and I will tell you why in a minute.

But, football or soccer wasn’t really my favourite game all the time because I liked to play cricket and considered as my favourite sport up and until my senior high school years. In fact, I was so passionate about playing cricket that at one point I was even made the captain of my high school cricket team. But, when my parents noticed that my academic performance was getting poor, they suggested me (more like a “warning”) to play some other kinds of sports which could be played within a shorter period of time than cricket.

By the way, cricket usually takes about 8 to 9 hours of time finish a match if we play a limited over cricket, such as 50 overs match, but it could take even much longer if we play the test match. But, on the other hands, playing a soccer match would take only about 90 minutes or so. Therefore, I started to play football with my friends at school.

Initially, I was playing only a few times a month, but now, I play it at least a few times a week. Anyway, football is all about scoring goals, and that is to send the “ball” inside the goalpost of the opponent team.  In a professional soccer match, which is played between two teams, consisting of 11 players each, whichever team scores more goals, they win.

Well, soccer is my favourite sport now for me, primarily because the speed, at which this sport is played, thrills me and excite me like nothing else in this world. It is my favourite sport also because of its unpredictable nature. After all, the winner is not decided in this sport until the very last moment.

Model Answer 2: Sports is one of my loves in my life. I like almost all major sports and can play football, cricket and badminton very well. Among all these sports that I often enjoy on TV or play with my friends, “football” is my favourite one.

I have been playing football since childhood, but I am not a professional footballer. I have almost made it a hobby. In my school age, I used to play football three days a week, but these days, I have entered into professional life and can not play it as often as I would like. I do follow almost all major European football leagues such as EPL, La Liga and Bundesliga. The Bayern Munich from German Bundesliga is my all-time favourite among the EU football clubs. Among the national teams, Germany is my favourite team and the German striker Marco Reus is my favourite footballer.

Football as a sport is very famous all over the world. To play football, we need a large green playground with two goalposts on opposite sides. The rules are very simple but everyone has to abide by the rules. The number of players needed for this game is twenty-two and they are divided into two teams. Each team has eleven players, and among them, one is the goalkeeper who safeguards the goalposts. There is a centre where the play starts with the whistle blow sound of the referee. The referee has the power to comment on right or wrong and dictate the games. Two other referees help the main referee from the sideline of the ground. The players have to maintain the rules constantly and if any player violates them, he or she is shown a red card which means he/she can no longer continue to play. The main objective of each team is to score as many goals as possible. The team with the higher number of goals wins the match.

Football was invented in England and is one of the hugely popular sports all around the world. It has spread almost every nook and corner of the world and is enjoyed by millions of fans. I am passionate about this sport so much and it can give me a thrilling experience in and off the field. It’s in my blood and I love it so much – be it watching a football competition or playing with my friends.

Sample Answer 3: Cricket is my favourite sport and I love to play it more than any other sport. I used to play it every day in my childhood and adolescent period but nowadays I play this sport once in a week, mostly on my days off. However, I often watch international cricket tournaments on TV and never miss the event when my country plays cricket in an international tournament.

There are basically three different formats of this sport which are widely popular. They are ‘test matches’ one day cricket’ and ‘T20’. The rules of the game slightly change based on the format of the cricket. One day cricket tournament is the most popular format and two teams, each with eleven cricket players, fight each other to win the match. The captain who wins the toss decides either to bat or bowl first. Each team play for 50 overs, each over consists of six bowls, and the team that bats first sets a run target for the opponent. If the first team can restrict the second team not to collect as many runs as they have scored, then the first team will win the match. On the contrary, if the second team can cross the run their opposite team has accumulated, they will be declared as the winner. A tie is very unlikely, though not impossible! When two teams’ scores stand as exactly the same, it is a tie. Two umpires in the field and another one in front of computer devices monitor the game and decide the rules. The test format and T20 have their own sets of rules but the fundamentals remain almost the same –score runs and restrict the opponent from reaching this run, or accumulate more runs than the opponent has collected.

I have started playing cricket from a very early stage of my life. I have practised a lot and I had been a member of our local cricket team. I would say I am an all-rounder in cricket and I love to score runs. This is the most popular sport in our country and I have an acute enthusiasm for playing and watching this sport. This sport requires fitness, practice, use of techniques, muscle-power, strategy, teamwork, and inherent abilities which are quite exciting to have in a single game. The thrill and excitement the sports offers are the main reason I like this sport. In fact, most of the people in my country would say that cricket is their favourite sport. We play cricket at the international level and that makes this sport very popular among our countrymen.

Sample Answer 4: I love to take part in outdoor sports and football is my favourite one. In fact, it helps me to get entertained and at the same time, I remain healthy. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to let me talk about my favourite sports.   Football is a popular form of sport. Besides, this is a great way to develop good health and mental stability. When the players take part in the sport, they are to run after the ball for a certain period of time. Thus, they have their physical exercise and at the same time enjoy the game. It also helps to increase focus on any issues and the most important issue is that it builds the capacity to play in a team. Actually, without teamwork, it is not possible to win a football match. Further, a football game is also a great source of entertainment for the spectators. They also derive much pleasure in watching the games.

Before joining the college, I had plenty of leisure hours to spend with football. But now due to my academic pressure, I hardly can manage times for practising and participating in matches. Now I play once or twice in a week based on my leisure. I used to join the practice matches every day in the local club. But now I am unable to practice once in a week. If there are any matches available, I practice on that day only. As a result, my performance is decreasing gradually. But if I get a chance, I usually do not miss the football matches on television. Most of the times the matches are held at night and I watch them before going to bed. This is the most impressive sport I have ever experienced, I think.

Playing football is easy. It requires two teams of players and each of the team will consist of 11 players. Besides, there are some specific positions in the team. Not everyone is allowed to play with the ball always. The team division helps to decide priority with the ball. Some of the players are to attack with the ball while there are some other players to prevent the attack from the opposition attackers. Besides, there are two goalkeepers who try to prevent football to enter the net. The game runs for 90 minutes and there is a break after 45 minutes. All the players take the break to energise themselves. The team which can score more goals becomes the winner.

This is my favourite sport for some reasons. First of all, it is able to remove tiredness from the body and helps to concentrate on a specific issue. Besides, football players are able to endure a huge amount of physical labour. They are to run for over one hour and thus they become flexible with physical labour. Further, I like the sport as this is a great one that helps to reduce stress. On the other side, it improves cardiovascular functions and bone strengths. If someone wants to reduce body fat, this is a great source for them. Continuous running helps to burn unwanted fat from the body. Another important aspect of the sport is it helps to enhance the confidence level. This game requires fewer costs. Considering all the issues, I like this game very much.

1. Participation in basketball is my favourite form of sport. I frequently take part in the sport at my college in Adelaide. Playing the game requires a ball, several players (5 in a team) and two sets of baskets. Free movement is a must in the game. I love basketball as it is helpful for having a fit body. It also needs to run across the court and thus the players get benefits of running. Moreover, it also teaches teamwork and other issues which are applicable in real-life as well.

2. Field hockey appears an interesting sport to me. This is a special type of competition and not everyone is able to play it. I play it twice in a week in my college playground. In fact, it requires lots of preparations and fitness. The sport needs hockey and a ball. The players try to score goals by pushing the ball on the opponent’s net. This is my favourite sport because it gives me immense pleasure. Moreover, it also helps me keep fit and relaxed. I do not need to have some extra exercises as I regularly;y play this sport.

3. At present, skateboarding is not considered as a popular form of sport but I love skateboarding. I usually take part in the sport almost every day in the week. Actually, I have my own skateboard and I use it whenever I need it. Riding a skateboard needs some special set of balancing skills. Losing balance will result in the downfall of the rider. I love skateboarding because it helps me to move to places easily and avoid traffic congestions. I do not need to ride on external transports here in New York as I am a skateboarder.

4. From my childhood, I have a dream to be a boxer. Unluckily, I failed to make the dream come true but still, boxing is my favourite sport. I take part in the sport occasionally. Boxing needs regular practice or there are chances to get hurt. This is my favourite sport because it helps me learn to protect myself. In fact, it has some real-life applications. You can save yourself from untoward events. So, I like it.

5. Undoubtedly badminton is a great form of sport. I play it once a week. Playing badminton requires badminton racquets and shuttles. It is played in singles or doubles. When played double, two teams compete with each other to defeat by making higher scores. This is my favourite sport as it helps to build muscles. Besides, it is an exciting game as well both for the audience and the players.

Sports are an important part of our life, especially during our childhood. Playing sports with friends was the most popular leisure during childhood. Cricket and football were the most popular sports we played as children and into our teens. However, basketball is the one sport that I enjoy playing more than others.

How did you first know about it?

I first learned about basketball when I was in school. Our school had a small basketball court in the playground. During recess, we would often see our seniors playing. The game looked exciting, with players dribbling the ball, passing it to their teammates, and trying to score baskets. The sound of the ball bouncing on the court and the cheers from the players drew my attention, and I became curious about the sport.

How often do you practice?

I do not play basketball frequently, but practice whenever possible. Back then during school and college, I used to play basketball with friends twice a week. But now due to work and other commitments, I take time to play at least once a week.

Explain why it is your favorite sport.

Basketball is my favorite sport for several reasons. I love the fast-paced nature of the game. The constant movement, passing, and scoring opportunities keep me engaged and energized throughout the game. It's a sport that demands quick reflexes, agility, and strategic thinking, which makes it mentally and physically challenging.

Describe Your Favorite Sport: Sample Answer 2

Football, also known as soccer, has been my passion since childhood. In India, where cricket is often the main sport, football has gained a special place among the youth, with millions of enthusiasts participating daily, driven by their love for the game.

I was first introduced to football when I was 13 years old. My school had a large sports stadium where various activities were offered, including cricket, basketball, volleyball, and, football. While I had an interest in other sports, there was something about football that captivated me from the very beginning.

During my school days, I always wait for the class to end to join my friends for football. Nowadays, with the demands of work and studies, I don't play as often as I once did. However, whenever time permits, I make it a point to organize a casual match with my old classmates, rekindling the joy we shared on the pitch.

Football offers a unique blend of physical and mental benefits. The game demands stamina, agility, and strategic thinking, helping me stay fit while sharpening my problem-solving skills. Moreover, football has taught me the invaluable lesson of teamwork, a skill that has proven invaluable in various aspects of my life.

Cue Card # 54: Describe your favourite sport

Ielts cue card/ candidate task card # 54, describe your favourite sport..

You should say:

  • how often you play it or watch it
  • how you play it

and explain why this is your favourite sport.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer 1:

Not sure when or under which circumstances, the French word “love” was started to be used in tennis in order to describe “zero”, according to the Oxford dictionary though, “love” really means love. Anyway, call it for the “love of the game” or “love of the French word”, I like watching long tennis, and I also like to play it at least once a week.

Tennis is a game played on a rectangular court by either two players (singles) or four (doubles). Players stand on opposite sides of a net and use a “stringed” racket to hit a tennis ball back and forth to each other in order to win enough points to win a game and enough games to win a set and enough sets to win a match. Each tennis match is made up of three to five sets at max (3 sets for women and 5 sets for men). To win a set, you must win at least six games. The games are scored starting at “love” (or zero) and go up to 40, but that’s actually just four points. From love, the first point is 15, then 30, then 40, then the game point, which wins the game. One of the most unique aspects of tennis sport is it can last for long, long hours, sometimes, even days!

I like Tennis because it seems to be a very “gentleman’s” game where one doesn’t have to get any physical contact with his/her opponents. Besides, it is a game that I can play most of my life, even when I am “old”, as it is really refreshing to see people in their 80s and 90s playing this great sport! Another unique aspect of this sport is that men and women can actually play together and compete together which rarely happens in any other sports. It is great for families just as it is good for my physical fitness as well.

Model Answer 2:

Cricket is insanely popular in our country, and I love it more than any other outdoor game or sport I know about. Introduced by the British during the colonial era, it has become so popular in our country that people are crazy about this sport. I’d like to thank you for letting me talk about this sport, which happens to be my favourite sport as well.

Cricket is played between two teams, and each team has eleven players on their side. It has three different formats namely “One Day Internationals”, “Test matches”, and “Twenty20 Internationals”. Usually, the first team scores run by hitting the ball while the fielding side tries to get them out. The first batting team scores a total run on the scoreboard and then the second team tries to beat it. If they succeed, they are declared the winner; otherwise, the first team wins. The game is played in an open and plain playground and batting and bowling are done in a 22-yard pitch.

Cricket is a healthy game that improves the player’s limbs and muscles. I have been playing it since early childhood and this game is in my blood. However, due to my busy and tight schedule, these days, I can’t play it as often as I would like to. Let’s say, I play cricket once or twice a month. But I never forget to follow international cricket events when big teams compete.

Cricket is my favourite sport because I know how to play this sport and every rule that governs this game. I’ve spent a significant amount of time both playing and watching this game, and it is only natural that I would like it than other games or sports that I’ve not watched or played that much. But perhaps the most prominent reason why it is my favourite sport is that we are a cricket-loving nation and we fanatically support our national team both from passion and patriotism whenever they play.

What is your favourite sport?

What is your favourite sport?

When the examiner asks you about sports

by Kasra Sharifan | Jul 19, 2019 | Speaking

The IELTS speaking test consists of three parts and the examiner will ask you questions on a variety of topics. But in this lesson, we are going to focus on sports and all the questions will be only about this topic.

What sports are popular in your country? [why?]

Well, in Iran people are crazy about football and wrestling. These two sports are really exciting and the national teams have been quite successful in both. That’s why we never want to miss their competitions.

Do you play any sports? [why/why not?]

Truth be told, I only ‘watch’ sports; I barely play any sports as I am rather lazy not to mention busy with my job. I play football with my friends in the park once or twice a year.

How do people learn to play this sport in your country?

Hmmm, football is an easy sport. Most people learn to play it as a child because all you need is a cheap ball and a quiet street or even a yard. You may learn it by yourself or by watching matches on TV, but still some children from wealthy families sign up for training courses at local sports centres.

Do you think it’s important for people to play sports? [Why/Why not?]

Absolutely! It really doesn’t matter what sport you choose as long as it keeps you physically active. You know, athletic people tend to live longer, healthier and happier lives.

You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help if you wish.

IELTS speaking part 2 cue card

Model answer :

The sport I would love to learn is Ping-Pong or as some may call it “table tennis”. It requires a Ping-Pong table equipped with a net, a Ping-pong ball and 2 rackets. This sport is famous for its need for agility, rapid movements, precise maneuvers around the table and above all being able to make quick and at the same time correct decisions on where to stand and how to hit the ball including the angle and the force.

Although mastering these techniques is difficult, the most problematic thing would be how to find a partner who can spend time practicing with you.

I suppose there are few ways you can actually learn how to play Ping-Pong, first of which is through using simulations, and sometimes computer games, which assist you to fully know the rules around the game. Besides, some enrol in the nearest sports complex. One advantage of this method is that you will follow standard procedures and you will become a professional player. And last but not least you may learn it the old-fashioned way by hiring a personal trainer to work with you individually. Of course considering the huge costs of this, not so many people would prefer this way as the outcome is not guaranteed.

Basically, this is a fantastic sport and if someone can really spend enough time and a small amount of money, not only will they enjoy the game, but they also take a step forward toward better health.

Sports and international competitions

What are some of the most popular international sporting events?

Well, I think the World Cup and the Olympics are two major global competitions. While the World Cup is only a football event, the Olympics include a variety of sports even football! They are both held every four years and teams from all over the world participate in them.

How can host countries benefit from international competitions such as the football world cup?

Obviously, it is a great privilege to be hosting the World Cup. Not only does it improve the country’s economy, but the government can buy antibiotics at mckesson pharmacy also take advantage of the global recognition to establish even better relationships with other countries. As far as the country’s economy is concerned, many new jobs are created and their tourism flourishes beyond measure.

If you could change one thing about the way international sport competitions are run what would it be?

Well, let me think…. hmm, perhaps it would be better to hold such events in developing countries too so that they can have the chance to come under the spotlight and attract tourists and more. I don’t know really, but maybe organisations like FIFA could provide them with financial aid to construct sports complexes and accommodation facilities.

Describe a Sport you Enjoy Playing

You should say:

  • what kind of sport that is;
  • who you play it with;
  •  where you play it;
  • and explain why you think doing this is healthy.

Sports are a vital part of our lives, especially during our childhood. As a result, participating in sports with friends was the most common pastime. Cricket and football were the most popular sports we played as children and even during our teenage years. However, there is one sport that I enjoy playing more than others, which is basketball.

I was introduced to basketball when I was in middle school. Although I did not have many friends interested in the game, I used to watch the games during recess every day to learn more about the sport. Then, as we reached high school, more and more people started to play basketball and I began to play basketball with my friends every day, either during recess or after school hours.

The basketball court at my school is where I played basketball the most. Consequently, I have also played for my school basketball team in various tournaments and inter-school sports events. Besides, I have played at a local basketball court a few kilometres from my residence during the weekends.

Basketball is one of my favourite sports due to various reasons. One of the major benefits of playing basketball is that it helps us do a full-body workout. Playing basketball helps us stay fit and agile. Basketball is also a great way to develop one’s body, especially during the growing stages of a person. Apart from enhancing physical fitness, playing basketball develops skills such as teamwork, strategy, effective communication and various other skills.

I’m not a great swimmer in any sense, but swimming is like my religion. It is truly refreshing and literally , washes away every disturbing thought I have whenever I dive into cold water. No matter how tight my schedule may get, I usually pay at least one visit to a local swimming pool to work myself up and get rejuvenated .

Sometimes, I have a partner or two who have been my best friends since high school. We live in the same neighbourhood, so it’s not too stressful when we have to set a schedule for our swimming session. We carpool more often than not, and it takes us roughly 15 minutes to get to the local recreation center where it provides the locals with a variety of facilities for training purpose such as gym class, stadium, swimming pool, tennis court and so on, which is extremely convenient for those who practice more than one activity. The only thing better than swimming itself is swimming with your besties, which is one of the hundreds of things I love about my weekly ritual . Hardly do we have time to meet each other during weekdays as we’re all up to our neck at work and totally stressed out. Therefore, having such a healthy way to catch up with my friends and recharge battery after an exhausting week never sounds better. Just like any other sports, swimming helps maintain your health , keep you fit as well as build your endurance . However, unlike others, it’s a very relaxing and peaceful form of exercise, you don’t even sweat for hours – a supreme advantage. Therefore, if you’re looking for a kind of sport that brings you comfort and relaxation , swimming should be your first choice.

Describe a sportsperson you admire - IELTS speaking cue card

1 April, 2024

Describe a sportsperson you admire

The IELTS cue card component is one of the exam's speaking components, where you will be asked to explain your point of view on a specific issue. The IELTS speaking exam consists of three portions. The first component will need you to define yourself, while the second will contain the IELTS cue card. The third portion should provide responses to the follow-up questions about the topic matter covered in Part 2.

"Describe a sportsperson you admire" is a popular speaking cue card question on the IELTS exam. In this blog, we'll look at how to reply to the IELTS speaking cue card question, "Describe a sportsperson you admire". So, let’s get started.

Engaging in sports and physical activities has many benefits both for the body and mind. We all have our favourite athletes and sports stars, and one of the most legendary figures in sports history, in my opinion, is Michael Jordan.

Who the person is?

Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. He's not just an American icon; his fame extends worldwide due to his incredible skills on the basketball court.  Michael Jordan started his NBA (National Basketball Association – USA) career as a 15-year-old rookie in 1984. He won multiple NBA championships, became a marketing sensation, and was known for his unstoppable scoring abilities. His success inspired millions of young people to aspire to "be like Mike."

What sport does he or she play?

Even though Michael Jordan hasn't played an NBA game in fifteen years, players and fans still consider him to have an unmatched aura. He's not just a basketball player; he's a cultural icon. Jordan's influence extends beyond the court and into modern advertising and sneaker culture. In addition, according to a 1996 study, Michael Jordan was previously ranked among the top three most famous people in the world.

When did you first hear about this person?

To be quite honest, I had no idea this athlete was truly a legend until I started getting involved in my school’s basketball team in 6th standard. My coach spoke about Jordan's legendary skills and accomplishments during a training session. Learning about Jordan opened my eyes to the rich history of basketball, making me appreciate the sport even more.

Why do you admire him or her?

Jordan became a great source of inspiration for me. I watched him play every day, trying to mimic his moves and strategies on the court. His dedication to his sport and his relentless pursuit of excellence motivated me to work harder and improve my skills.

Conclusion

I admire his dedication, loyalty, and desire to continue improving himself. He embodies the true spirit of sportsmanship, both on and off the court. Watching him play live is a dream of mine, and his impact on the world of sports will never be forgotten.

When it comes to sports, there's someone who shines super bright, especially in football. That someone is Cristiano Ronaldo. He is an exception in the game of football. Therefore, I would like to discuss Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most people agree that one of the greatest football players of all time is Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a professional player from Portugal.

Ronaldo isn't just good at football; he's legendary. He's won five Ballon d'Or trophies, like gold medals for being the best in the world at football. He has also represented Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, three of the biggest football teams in the world, on the field.

I became aware of Cristiano Ronaldo through various sports networks, social media platforms, and news websites. In addition to his great abilities on the football field, he’s got fans from all over because of how hard he works and how much he cares about helping others.

Why do you admire him or her?

Ronaldo's like a role model for never giving up. He's always pushing himself to be better, not just in football but also in helping people. He has engaged in several charitable endeavours, giving substantial amounts to organisations and using his position to spread awareness of many causes. During the tough times of COVID-19, he didn't just sit around; instead, he jumped into action, organising campaigns and even turning his fancy hotel into a hospital to help out.

So, Ronaldo isn't just a football star; he's a hero in real life, too! He's known not only for his amazing skills on the field but also for his big heart and helping hands. That's why people all around the world love him so much!

I'm a huge fan of cricket, just like many other people in India. Each of us has our favourite athletes whom we admire a lot. Personally, I'm deeply inspired by the journey and achievements of a certain cricketer.

Who the person is?

The cricketer I admire the most is MS Dhoni from India. He's famous worldwide for his incredible leadership skills and batting prowess. Dhoni has achieved numerous milestones throughout his career, making him one of the most renowned cricketers globally.

MS Dhoni is a great Indian cricketer. While he excels in multiple aspects of the game, he's best known for his batting skills. Additionally, he's a superb left-arm spinner known for his high wicket-taking ability and an exceptional wicketkeeper. He tries to catch the ball really well, and because of this, opposing batters are afraid to face him.

I first became aware of MS Dhoni during the 2011 World Cup. While watching cricket with my grandfather, I witnessed Dhoni's brilliant and strategic captaincy, which led India to win that match.  So, after that match, he became my favourite player.

In addition to his skill on the field, MS Dhoni has an admirable off-field manner. His dedication to the game, unwavering work ethic, and remarkable ability to perform under pressure are truly inspiring. He has brought numerous trophies to Team India through sheer determination, hard work, and fitness. I also respect him because he came from a modest background and was raised in a tiny family. Despite facing financial challenges, he pursued his cricketing dreams relentlessly, even while juggling a demanding government job.

In conclusion, MS Dhoni is an outstanding cricketer and an inspirational figure. His journey, achievements, and character inspire aspiring athletes and cricket enthusiasts worldwide. Dhoni's legacy will undoubtedly motivate future generations, and his contributions to Indian cricket are immense.

Question: How important do you see physical education classes will be? Why?

Answer: Yes, physical education is essential for maintaining our health and fitness. It also imparts valuable knowledge on various sports and diets. With physical education, we can learn the proper technique for exercising so that we do not hurt ourselves while exercising.

Question: Do young people in your nation like physical activity?

Answer: Teenagers in India have wildly differing levels of enthusiasm for physical activity. Due to the increased awareness of fitness and health, they are becoming increasingly involved in sports, dance, yoga, gym exercises, and other physical activities. However, a sizable percentage of young people are also less likely to exercise regularly due to stress from school, a lack of facilities, or the growing appeal of digital entertainment.

Question: How often do Indians exercise, and what kinds of activities do they enjoy?

Answer: Indians are interested in a wide range of sports. Traditional activities such as yoga and meditation have become extremely popular due to their holistic health advantages. Those who enjoy more strenuous physical activities are likely to jog, walk, or work out at the gym. Football, badminton, and cricket are among the most popular sports. In recent years, there has been an increase in interest in fitness regimens like Pilates, Zumba, and aerobics, particularly in cities.

Question: How do you think physical education classes affect children’s development?

Answer: These lessons change children's thinking because they gain clarity on how to be fit. They learn about what they should preserve and what they should discard, which has positive long- and short-term effects.

Question: What is the reason behind the scarcity of great athletes?

Answer: Since being a great athlete is a difficult path, many people have the physical ability to reach that level but lack the mental fortitude to continue. Many intelligent people are fired halfway through their careers because they can't cope with the demands and stress of daily life.

The most important thing to understand is how to respond to the examiner's inquiry properly. When you communicate, you need to come across as confident and prepared.

Give it as little time as you can to understand. You've got one minute to prepare for the topic. Be genuine and self-assured when facing the test-taker.

You must be prepared for the question so that you can answer it in less than a minute after the examiner poses it.

You'll be able to finish this on time once you figure out exactly what you want to say and how to articulate everything on your mind.

If required, you should include comparable phrases and quotations. This will undoubtedly help you speak English more fluently.

By considering your questions, you will easily get past the speaking cue card question on the IELTS. You can enhance your abilities and boost your overall IELTS Speaking section score by taking practice exams or mock exams.

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 22, 2016 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 8

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

In today’s lesson, we are going to look at a question from IELTS speaking part 2 that asks you to describe a sportsperson . I will help you analyze the question, make notes, give some useful language, and then I will give you a helpful sample answer.

Note: I have updated this post since it was originally written to include a video lesson. You can find that at the bottom of this page.

Cue Card: Describe a Sportsperson

Here’s a common question from IELTS Speaking Part 2:

Describe a sportsperson you admire. You should say: who the person is what sport he or she does when did you first hear about this person and why you admire him or her.

Hopefully, everyone reading this is at least familiar with some famous sports stars. You don’t need to be a fanatic to answer this question well… but it might help! You just need to be able to think of a person, describe what he or she does, when and where you first encountered this person, and give some reasons why you admire them.

describe a sportsperson: american football

As always, you should be writing some short notes in preparation, rather than any sentences. Remember that you really don’t have enough time to write more than a few words.

Note down any vocabulary that comes to mind and which you think will help. But mostly write down words that will help you to structure your speech – this makes your words sound more natural.

See our article on how to improve your IELTS speaking .

Here are my notes:

describe a sportsperson - Leo Messi

Leo Messi Argentina-> Barcelona Disability Awards 10 years ago Perseverance

These are obviously very basic, but by looking at them I can speak confidently without missing any of the points from the cue card. There are two useful words of vocabulary – disability and perseverance . These words, if properly used, sound impressive and add meaningfully to the speaking task. They are examples of “less common vocabulary” and can help improve your score.

It is helpful to have an idea about this cue card in your head before the exam. Certain topics often appear in IELTS speaking part 2 and you should be quite familiar with them before you sit the IELTS. Here are some guides to common topics:

Sample answer

I have highlighted some useful constructions for describing a famous person. These are useful for describing Leo Messi but of course can be adapted to other people. Some are quite basic – like “some would say” – while others are more complex, such as “his inspiring story of perseverance.”

Remember: you should never memorize answers for IELTS, but it is helpful to remember collocations – that means groups of words that are commonly used together.

So here is my answer to the cue card above:

My favourite sports person is Leo Messi. He’s a famous football player, and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Argentina, where he was born, but moved to Barcelona, in Spain, when he was a teenager. He had a disability, for which the Spanish team agreed to pay his medical bills. Despite his health problems, Messi developed into a modern legend . He has won numerous trophies over the course of his career , including five “world footballer of the year” awards – which is a world record. I remember first hearing about him about ten years ago, when he was first making headlines .  His life story caught my attention just as much as his incredible skills. I admire him because of his triumph over adversity . I think that his inspiring story of perseverance is a lesson for us all.

The phrases “making headlines” and “modern legend” are really useful for talking about famous people. You can incorporate these into your IELTS speaking part 2 answer like this.

Lebron James is a modern legend in the field of basketball. He has been making headlines for more than a decade.

More Sports Vocabulary

Sports is a common IELTS topic and it may occur in other parts of the exam, so make sure you know some basic vocabulary. If there is a sport that you really care about, learn some of the words that are commonly used to describe it. Here is a great collection of sports words to study.

One of the tricky things about sports in English is that there are some very subtle differences in language from sport to sport and between cultures. Here are some examples:

Basketball is played on a basketball court . Football is played on a football pitch . Baseball is played on a baseball field .

And so on. Knowing these slight differences can really help elevate your IELTS speaking score. Also, keep in mind that you are not describing a sport. Instead, you have been asked to describe a sportsperson. This means that you should be good with vocabulary for describing people .

YouTube Video

I have converted this lesson into a video format. If you want to hear me giving my sample answer in an audio recording, you can watch this video. You might find it useful to repeat my sentences to improve your pronunciation .

Ok, folks. That’s all for today’s lesson. I hope you are now able to describe a sportsperson. You can put your own ideas into the comment section below and I will give you some feedback.

I would like ti talk a bout Mohammed Shalah who is one of the most famous football player and some would say he’s the best football player in the world, he started his career in Egypt ,where he was born but moved to a lot of sports clubs in Europe until transported to Liverpool football club in England. There are several reasons but for me, I mention specifically him because I’m big fan of his play and performance . I have seen almost all of his matches with Liverpool club and consider him to one of the world’s most player also he is a source of motivation and inspiration after he has been a wared BBC prize for the best football player in England not only but also candidate from France football journal to win Africa Prize for the best football player in Africa. In the future, if I have a chance to meet him, I would definitely ask him for signature , take photos with and post on my Facebook wall,it will be a golden opportunity for me to talk with him, learn from and be inspired by this man.

Hi Adel. I have corrected this for you:

I would like to talk about Mohammed Shalah, who is one of the most famous football players and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Egypt, where he was born, but moved to a lot of sports clubs around Europe until he transferred to Liverpool football club in England. There are several reasons why I admire him but for me, the most important factor is that I’m big fan of his play and performance. I have seen almost all of his matches with Liverpool and consider him to one of the world’s best players. Also, he is a source of motivation and inspiration after he was been awarded BBC prize for the best football player in England. He was not only but also candidate from the French football journal to win the African Prize for the best football player in Africa but also… [I don’t know what you want to say here]. In the future, if I had a chance to meet him, I would definitely ask him for his autograph, take photos with him, and post them on my Facebook wall. It would be a golden opportunity for me to talk with him, learn from him, and be inspired by this man.
