Everything to Know About Lori Loughlin’s ‘Fall Into Winter’ Movie: Details About Her 1st Great American Family Film

New year, new Lori! Fall Into Winter marks Lori Loughlin ’s TV movie comeback — and her first film as a lead for Great American Family. “Lori is a genre-defining star that I have had the honor to call a close friend and collaborator for more than 15 years,” president and CEO of Great American Media Bill Abbott said in a September 2022 press release. “We have a shared vision for creating meaningful and memorable movies that resonate with our passionate fans, and I look forward to welcoming her back to Great American Family to anchor our 2023 winter programming slate.” Loughlin, 58, was a major star on the Hallmark Channel for more than six years before the network cut ties with her in 2019 amid the college admissions scandal. (Abbott, 60, was the channel’s CEO from 2009 to 2020.) The Full House alum made headlines in March 2019 after she and husband Mossimo Giannulli were accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters, Bella, now 24, and Olivia Jade, now 23, into college. The couple pleaded guilty to fraud charges in May 2020. Loughlin served two months in prison, while her husband, 59, served five months. The Garage Sale Mysteries star and the designer also completed their required community service hours upon their respective releases. The Homegrown Christmas actress joined forces with Great American Media, which Abbott founded in 2021, for her acting return in December 2021. She reprised her Hallmark role as Abigail Stanton in the two-episode holiday special, When Hope Calls: A Country Christmas. Loughlin’s attachment to the project inspired her former When Calls the Heart costar Daniel Lissing to return as Jack Thornton in the special. “We stayed in touch through a pretty trying time, and it was a really nice moment to come back to work together and just connect with my friend in that way, reprising these characters again that both of us weren’t sure that we’d ever be able to play again,” Lissing, 41, exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2021, referring to his 2018 exit from the drama series. “The fact that we got that opportunity was a really special moment for both of us. We had good connection over that and a lot of gratitude to be on set just one more time.” The Summerland alum’s acting resurgence will continue with Great American Family’s Fall Into Winter, which premieres on Saturday, January 28, at 8 p.m. ET. Scroll down to learn more about Loughlin’s new movie:

Fall Into Winter (2023)

When Kerrie’s brother sells his half of their family-owned, upscale candy shop to his high school friend (and her once nemesis), Brooks, she is aghast! The two must find a way to set aside their differences and work together as business partners. They slowly begin to fall for each other, ultimately making this year’s Winterfest the sweetest day ever!

Dove Review

**This review is contributed by Super Channel—a channel dedicated to providing integrity and accountability in today’s entertainment.

This heartfelt romantic comedy highlights forgiveness and second chances when misunderstandings cloud life’s path. Lori Loughlin and James Tupper are a super match for a love story that will provide an enjoyable movie night at home for your entire family. Dove approved for all ages!

Kerrie (Lori Loughlin) is shocked when her brother and business partner, Jake (Darrin Baker), announces he and his wife are moving to London. But the good news is, Jake is selling his half of the candy shop to Brooks McLeod (James Tupper), his best friend who is competent and trustworthy, and his businesses continually increase profits, so Kerrie will not be alone. Kerrie is mortified! Brooks was her high school nemesis!

Their first meeting takes on a rocky start as Brooks pries into how Kerrie operates the business in a somewhat gruff manner and hits some sore spots by questioning her decisions. He is all over expanding the shop, changing the logo, redoing the website, adding a Wi-Fi service, a coffee bar, and making Kerrie’s head spin! Kerrie believes he is as presumptuous and as arrogant as he was in high school.

As Kerrie and Brooks work on meshing their opposing ideas, they are reluctantly impressed with what each is bringing to the partnership. But running into Erin Smythe (Janaya Stephens), the high school cheer leader, now a headhunter for exclusive worldwide companies and who Brooks took to the school dance over Kerrie, brings back unpleasant memories. And Erin is out to head hunt Brooks in more ways than one!

As Kerrie teaches Brooks about candy-making, they are having fun . . . until Erin pops by for that late dinner he promised. When Brooks talks about Erin as a good friend, but not what he is looking for, Kerrie quickly asks him what he IS looking for. This small exchange starts a few little sparks, and they both are seeing each other in a different light.

As Brooks and Kerrie enjoy reminiscing, Brooks sincerely apologizes for his bad behavior in high school, and they decide on a fresh start. Tomorrow is the Winterfest celebration, and they are more than ready!

But when Brooks overhears a private conversation between Kerrie and her lawyer, and a late-night call from Jake turns Kerrie’s world upside down, both are confused and hurt. Are they destined to go their separate ways and back to their former lives, or can honest conversation and forgiveness lead them to forever happiness of the heart?

The Dove Take:  “You won’t regret the chances you took for love, only the ones that passed you by.” Believe in yourself, listen to, and trust your heart, recognize forgiveness, and honor second chances. It will lead to a good life and is worth the journey.

Dove Rating Details

Brooks is reliable and trustworthy; Kerrie has high morals and principles and fiercely protects her family legacy; Kerrie admits she was too critical; both Brooks and Kerrie find a way to be respectful of each together.

‘Fall Into Winter’ Netflix Movie Review - A Wholesome Rom-Com with a Touch of Holiday Charm

fall into winter movie reviews

Fall Into Winter, a delightful Hallmark-style romantic comedy, whisks you away to the enchanting town of Hollybrook, where the air is crisp, the snow softly falls, and love is just around the corner. At the heart of the story lies Kerry, the passionate owner of a beloved family candy shop, who finds herself unexpectedly partnered with her high school nemesis, Brooks, after he acquires a share of the business. As these two contrasting personalities navigate their newfound working relationship, sparks begin to fly, and old grudges thaw amidst the sweet aroma of holiday cheer.

Kerry, the spirited and dedicated owner of Hollybrook's beloved Jingle Bell Sweets, pours her heart and soul into her family's candy shop, preserving traditions and delighting customers with her delectable creations. However, her world is turned upside down when Brooks, her high school nemesis and former friend of her brother, acquires a share of the business. Memories of past conflicts resurface, and Kerry finds herself reluctantly collaborating with Brooks, a man she once considered her rival.

As they work side by side, Kerry and Brooks discover that their initial perceptions of each other are far from the truth. Brooks, once known for his carefree attitude, reveals a hidden depth and sensitivity, while Kerry's strong-willed nature softens under Brooks's charm. Amidst the chaos of the holiday season, they find themselves drawn to each other, their differences becoming the very foundation of their growing connection.

Fall Into Winter is a heartwarming and charming romantic comedy that captures the essence of the holiday season with its themes of love, forgiveness, and second chances. The film's strength lies in its relatable characters, played with endearing charisma by Lori Loughlin and Chad Michael Murray. Loughlin's portrayal of Kerry exudes warmth and determination, while Murray's Brooks brings a refreshing blend of humor and vulnerability.

The film’s visual charm is undeniable, thanks to the picturesque cinematography that captures the essence of Hollybrook, a town transformed into a winter wonderland. The snow-dusted landscapes, charming storefronts, and cozy interiors provide a perfect backdrop for the unfolding love story, instilling a sense of warmth and nostalgia.

The film's plot unfolds with a predictable trajectory, following the familiar beats of a classic rom-com. However, the predictability is balanced by the film's genuine charm and its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia for the simple joys of the holiday season. The supporting cast, including Jennifer Robertson and June Squibb, adds layers of humor and warmth to the story.

While the film's dialogue can occasionally feel clichéd, it is redeemed by the undeniable chemistry between Loughlin and Murray. Their on-screen banter and gradual shift from animosity to affection are a delight to watch. The film's lighthearted tone and heartwarming message make it an ideal choice for a cozy night in, especially during the festive season. Another area for consideration is the film's resolution, which might feel somewhat rushed in comparison to the story's overall pacing. The characters' transformation and reconciliation occur relatively quickly, leaving some viewers wishing for a more nuanced and gradual progression of their relationship.

At its core, Fall Into Winter delivers a poignant message about the power of second chances and the importance of letting go of past grudges. This theme resonates with viewers, reminding them that forgiveness and open-mindedness can lead to unexpected connections and personal growth.

Fall into winter (2023) - great american family movie review.

Fall Into Winter Movie Review

It didn't really happen overnight, but it sure felt like it!  I keep wondering, where did our fall season go?

The second thing that drew me to the movie, "Fall Into Winter", was the actress, Lori Loughlin.  I have always liked her and her characters.  Thanks to her role as Abigail Stanton in When Calls the Heart , I'm used to seeing her in the kitchen, which is the setting for "Fall Into Winter".  She co-owns a candy shop and makes all of the candy.

Last but by no means least, I wanted to watch this movie because it is a Great American Family Movie.  I have come to rely on the Great American Family Channel to provide me with wonderful movies that do not include explicit content, violent or gory scenes, or foul language.  I find them quite uplifting, peaceful and easy to watch.

Fall Into Winter Synopsis

Fall Into Winter

Kerry isn't as much interested in profit as she is in the community.  She has "lived in the same house, in the same town, and had the same job" her whole life.  She doesn't want to make drastic changes, raise prices, or view people as just customers.  She enjoys treating everyone like family.

Brooks and Kerry clash now as much as they did in high school, although Brooks doesn't really understand why Kerry has always had a problem with him.  As business partners, it is necessary for them to work out their problems, past and present, to have a successful partnership.

Fall Into Winter is predictable, but still a fun movie to watch.  Even though they had differences of opinion, they both worked toward finding areas of agreement and understanding for one another.

Sounds delightful. Of course the plot is predictable, but that's what makes it fun. Naturally, Brooks and Kerry's relationship will change as they work together. :) Thanks for telling me about a fun wintertime movie, Sylvestermouse.

This sounds like a delightful movie with excellent acting. I’ve always liked Lori Loughlin, too, and I think this would be a lovely movie to relax with for a couple of pleasantly escapist hours. Thanks for the recommendation!

We will have to find this, sounds like perfect movie for movie night. I always hoped that Lori Loughlin would return to "When Calls the Heart but I guess that isn't going to happen. Thanks for this movie recommendation.

Sometimes a predictable movie is needed; something calming, easy, and like you said family friendly. This sounds like a good choice for the whole family to enjoy.

What You Need To Know:

Miscellaneous Immorality: Some characters hold grudges and act unkindly to one another.

More Detail:

FALL INTO WINTER is a winter romantic comedy on the Great American Family Channel.

Lori Loughlin makes her network debut as Kari, a candy store owner who’s busy prepping for the store’s busiest time of the year, Winterfest. However, her brother and part owner of the store, tells her that he and his wife are moving to London. He says he must sell his half of the company but reassures Kari he has a trusted buyer lined up to buy.

Kari’s sadness turns to frustration when she learns that the new business partner is a man named Brooks, a former high school classmate she didn’t like. Despite her reluctance, she agrees to Brooks becoming her business partner, but they get off to a rocky start.

Kari feels as if Brooks has no regard for her family’s legacy with the store, which was started by her grandparents. Meanwhile, Brooks believes Kari’s unwilling to make any changes to keep the business alive and thriving.

At first, Kari wants Brooks gone. However, after he finally shows genuine care for her and her family’s business, she starts to fall for Brooks. She forgets about her plan to replace him as a business partner and instead helps show him the ins and outs of owning a family business in a small town.

Meanwhile, Brooks is offered a top executive job in California and must decide between the prestigious position and Kari’s shop. In his short time as Kari’s business partner, Brooks has grown fond of the town, the candy store and Kari, but he admits to his father he’s tempted to take the higher-paying job. Another complication arises when there’s a miscommunication between Kari and Brooks about how they feel about one another.

FALL INTO WINTER is a wholesome romantic comedy with themes of forgiveness and giving people a second chance. While the production values falter a few times, the movie tells a heartfelt, cozy, holiday story that’s safe for the whole family. Also, FALL INTO WINTER is Lori Loughlin’s debut movie with Great American Family, and she delivers a great performance as the lead character.

Candy, good candy, makes people happy.

Jalapeno hot sauce jellybean, London, Ohio, Happy Winterfest?, color blue overload, Belgian candy making secrets, Adam's Eatery, and a woman's experimental jelly bean phase; For a film that deals with making candies, Fall into Winter is ironically sweetless as it falls flat on its face, plunged down and drowned into Willy Wonka's chocolate river in this overwhelmingly blue-powered (Christmas??) winter romance with a disprited Lori Loughlin and a capitalist James Tupper at the centre of it.

Written by Cara J. Russell as a part of her three consecutive Christmas romcom collaboration with director T.W. Peacocke for Great American Family, consisting of Catering Christmas , Twas the Text Before Christmas (arguably the best of the three),…

Lori Loughlin to Star in Great American Family Movie ‘Fall Into Winter’

Lori Loughlin

Lori Loughlin is set for her first romantic comedy for Great American Family, as the When Hope Calls alum will star in Fall Into Winter , premiering in January 2023.

It’s the actress’ first major role since playing the part of Abigail Stanton in When Hope Calls Christmas last year, which marked her first acting role since the 2019 college admissions scandal. In August 2020, Loughlin was fined and sentenced to two months in prison after she and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud.

“Lori is a genre-defining star that I have had the honor to call a close friend and collaborator for more than 15 years,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO of Great American Media. “We have a shared vision for creating meaningful and memorable movies that resonate with our passionate fans, and I look forward to welcoming her back to Great American Family to anchor our 2023 winter programming slate.”

Fall Into Winter , which begins production on October 23, follows Keely (Loughlin), who is aghast when her brother sells his half of their family-owned candy shop to Brooks, his former high school best friend and Keely’s arch-nemesis. This forces a sudden urgency to find connection and common ground, but Keely has been hurt before and finds it hard to change.

Over the course of the film, fate brings Keely and Brooks together. And it turns out that Brooks’ past is a mirror of Keely’s, as he, too, has a fortress around his heart. But perhaps this new beginning is an opportunity for them both to learn and grow.

Lori Loughlin is GAC Family ‘s newest star. Christmas Time Is Here! A Must-Have Guide to 150+ Original Holiday Movies on Netflix, Hallmark, Lifetime and More View List

The Hallmark competitor announced Thursday that Loughlin will star in her first romantic comedy for the network, titled Fall Into Winter . The TV-movie will air in January 2023 (exact date TBD) as part of GAC’s winter programming slate.

“Lori is a genre-defining star that I have had the honor to call a close friend and collaborator for more than 15 years,” Great American Media CEO Bill Abbott said in a statement. “We have a shared vision for creating meaningful and memorable movies that resonate with our passionate fans, and I look forward to welcoming her back to Great American Family to anchor our 2023 winter programming slate.”

In a previous interview with Variety , Abbott referred to Loughlin — who was implicated in the infamous 2019 college admissions scandal , resulting in a two-month prison sentence, a $150,000 fine and 100 hours of mandated community service — as “America’s sweetheart, regardless of whatever happened. At the end of the day, she represents all that is positive about entertainment, and has had a stellar career,” he said. “Not only on screen, but also the way she’s conducted herself personally, in terms of being someone who has a track record of doing the right thing in the world at large, aside from whatever happened. I don’t know the details. She’s beloved and for good reason.”

Fall Into Winter marks Loughlin’s first TV-movie since 2018. In the rom-com, Loughlin’s Keely is “aghast when her brother sells his half of their family-owned, upscale candy shop to his best friend from high school (and her nemesis, Brooks), forcing a sudden urgency to find connection and common ground,” according to the official logline. “Keely has been hurt before; change is her new nemesis. Brooks’ past is a mirror of Keely’s. He, too, has a fortress around his heart. Fate brings the pair together. Might it also offer new beginnings?”

Abbott — who previously ran Hallmark Channel and left following the network’s mishandling of a commercial featuring a same-sex wedding — has helped facilitate Loughlin’s comeback, which began with a role in 2021’s When Hope Calls Christmas special . He’s also in business with fellow Full House vet Candace Cameron Bure, who departed her longtime home at Hallmark earlier this year for an exclusive pact with GAC. The network has already announced two projects with Bure, including starring vehicle A Christmas… Present and the Andrea Barber-led Christmas on Candy Cane Lane .

Seriously of all the crimes you could commit, hers seems so unimportant. Rich people have been donating to colleges/universities for special favors for their kids for as long as colleges and universities have existed. I’m not a major supporter or anything but she seems a generally well-liked person, and not malicious in any way. Let her get back to her life and career.

Exactly right! For those reasons, there was no reason to indict or jail her! Welcome back, Lori!

She didn’t get indicted by the FBI for “donating”. She plead guilty to fraud. She paid $500,000 in bribes to arrange to have their two daughters accepted into USC as members of the rowing team, although neither girl had participated in the sport. They faked pictures of their daughters’ rowing to help with the fraudulent resumes that claimed they won gold medals in rowing (they didn’t row at all and had no plans to join the team). Her daughter stated on Youtube she didn’t care about school, just the social aspect. Meanwhile kids who had the desire and grades and don’t resort to committing crimes, didn’t get in because her 2 undeserving kids took spots. To me that isn’t someone who “someone who has a track record of doing the right thing” That is someone who is entitled and only does the right thing when it is convenient. But otherwise, she will be unethical and resort to crimes if it gets her what she wants.

^ All of this. Her kids got offers through fraud, thus depriving kids who were perhaps *honestly* more worthy from getting admitted. I’ve got no sympathy. . Hope she enjoys her sub-Hallmark career.

Were you on the jury? Or are you just repeating what you’ve read on the news media? There is always more to the story. Isn’t it possible she simply paid and donated a lot of money and someone else did the grunt work as part of his scam telling rich celebrities he can get their dumb kids into good colleges? She pleaded guilty to the fraud. She and her husband did their time. She’s had time to reflect. She needs to make a living somehow. I don’t see what she did as anything different than that NBA player who donated millions of dollars to the University that later admitted his daughter.

jfc what an astoundingly moronic take

lol what does it matter? paying off people to get kids into college. i’m sure you will say “oh poeple have done that for ages.” does that make it right? “oh it’s not harming anyone.” really?

YES, Allison! 👏🏻

PREACH, Allison!!!

I will not be tuning in. She is a convicted criminal that deserved to be in jail.

RIGHT O. Our family refuse to watch, much less pay to watch Lori Loughlin pretend is she nothing more than a FELON!

Say that to the families that actually worked hard to get into USC but lost out to Lori’s daughter – who didn’t even want to go to school.

While I don’t think her crimes are as bad as the people that have assaulted others etc. she did act wrongly and deserved to be punished but… she served her time so let her get back to her little cable movies. Let the audiences decide if they want to watch her or not. That said, what she did was different from what most rich people do….she didn’t donate to the school, she paid bribes to individuals which only benefitted the individual’s bank accounts. Donations at least make it so students at the school get a new building or something similiar that benefits others on campus.

Good for GAC. She did wrong, and paid the price. Had she been other than rich and white she would have received no jail time at all.

LOL that’s hilarious

Yes, because only rich, white people go to jail? What planet are you on?

It’s surprising that she got jail time despite being Rich and White.

Dude, get serious man

What kind of drugs get you to this level of delusion?

GAC is so WHITE, like really really WHITE

And BET is so black, what’s your point?

BET doesn’t pretend it’s not mostly for black audiences, while GAC pretends that it’s not mostly or white audiences?

GAC doesn’t pretend anything. They know who their audience is. Suburban women in the age range of 35 and up who enjoy cheesy rom-coms. There is no race needed for this group. Meanwhile, BET knows their audience, which is predominately African-American. Two cable networks with a niche audience. That’s what cable is for…to connect with a group of people to make money off of them. If viewers think GAC is too white or too cheery, then there is always Univision or BET or Bravo or Chill TV (does that still exist). Every network on cable has a niche audience, unless they’re a big network like HBO that has the money to pay for niche content and for content for wider audiences.

I’m glad to see she’s back on TV. Maybe they could do more garage sale mysteries. I loved them

Same here! I loved those shows!

Once a entitled crook always one. I will never watch anything she is in on GAC or any other show. So sad that GAC likes criminals and promotes them being in movies and shows. I will never watch that channel again.

Look in the mirror leftie nut! You are spouting some very disturbing words. Contact your local healthcare you need to check in there. Please don`t get off from medics as you go lunatic mode always.

What on earth gave you the impression that they are a “leftie”?

She’s a woman who is a criminal yes she went to boot camp jail she should have stayed off tv as a favor to the decent actresses

Why the need to comment on it? Just don’t watch.

I loved those movies also.

I believe that movie series is owned by Hallmark. Not sure if GAC will be able or want to buy the rights to the movies from Hallmark.

GAC really seems to have no interest in establishing their own brand, they just want to take people who worked at Hallmark and rely on being a cheater brand? Pretty pathetic.

You realize the guy who runs GAC was the guy who built the Hallmark Channel into what it is today, right? Yeah, I’m sure he does feel cheated. He’s the one who brought Candace Cameron and Lori Loughlin to Hallmark. They were the first two actresses he hired to start-up the cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie programming. He brought in other 80s icons too, like Danica Mckellar. All these actresses recognize this and they feel a need to help him succeed at his new network after the way Hallmark after he helped them revive their careers.

Yes I am very aware. But that doesnt answer the question – why is GAC trying to be Hallmark reborn instead of trying to be something unique? Its like a network starting up as AABC, then hiring anyone who ABC fires and trying to emulate everything they do.

GAC is trying to stay the same way Hallmark was run while he was the president there. Hallmark is becoming more inclusive while GAC is staying traditional, at least that’s the way I understand things.

So against the LGBTQ community?

Good. Looking forward to seeing it. :)

GAC is the sound my cat makes when she’s throwing up.

You owe me a new keyboard! 😂

It must be nice to be rich and ignorant. She’s about as “American Sweetheart” as Trump is. She should attempt to be more humble.

You can be a criminal and America’s sweetheart? Good to know. (But honestly when was she ever America’s sweetheart? I’ve never heard her referred to as that)

I mean, aside from having a childhood crush her (despite her literally being 24 years older than me haha), I don’t give a crap. Her Hallmark etc flicks aren’t my cup of tea.

That being said, I think its good she is working. Unless you’re a murderer, rapist, or pedophile, I believe in second chances. Otherwise, there is no motivation to atone.

Another fake Hollywood-ite. But i’m sure other celebs have done worse than what she did.

Lori Loughlin deserves a second chance, Bill Abbott calling her “America’s sweetheart regardless of what happened” when what happened proved Loughlin is in fact not, that I have a problem with.

“Someone who has a track record of doing the right thing…” 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Good for GAC! I was so angry when Hallmark Canned her because of An accusation not even giving her a chance even if it did turn out to be true it’s ridiculous they didn’t give her the benefit of the doubt. I hated Hallmark since!

She was indicted by the FBI. They don’t just indict white-collar criminals without strong evidence. She then plead guilty to fraud and went to prison. It was way more than an accusation.

Hallmark would have looked far worse if they defended her actions.

GAC has nothing to lose so they seem like they’re hiring people that can grab headlines just as long as they aren’t LGBTQ or non-white.

Lmao gagged at the truth in ur last sentence .

She was convicted. Find a better soap box Deborah.

I doubt that Canada would have allowed her into the country on a work permit once she was indicted. Hallmark made the right decision about her employment.

She’s done her time. GAC Family’s Abbott is right about hiring her. She has a lot of fans that want to see her working.

Politics aside, she’s too old to “star” in a romantic comedy. She’s pushing 60! Who’s going to watch that?

60 year old women aren’t allowed to have romances?

Nope, time for a chapter of Little Women, then in bed by 8:30

Sure they are, but how many viewers would they draw?

WHO SAYS. I AM 61 AND HAVE BEEN IN A ROMANCE FOR 48 YEARS.

Me too.. 66 yrs here. Loved Lori since her early years. Married for 46 yrs. Love RomComs. It’s just refreshing to watch a good storyline with great acting. No sex. No cursing. No violence. Just a hug and a kiss. Yeah. My cup of tea.. or coffee. Lol

If GAC wants to give her work then good for her. She should be able to attempt a living. On one hand, I say she did her time and restitution (hopefully with a lesson learned) so it’s time to move on. On the other, It’s one’s actions when no one is watching which is the test of character.

It will be up to the audience if she can restore her ‘public’ image. If people are craving to have her on their tv screens again then she is getting that chance to be accepted with open arms. If people have a bad taste in their mouth over her actions then they can skip the movie(s).

If more people are in the second group, then she’ll have some work to do if she wants to continue playing in the same genre . Not insurmountable by any means.

Count me as someone who will skip her return, in fact GAC in general is off my viewing preferences.

the fact that she and her husband were one of the only people fighting the charges instead of just owning up to it tells me they still wanted to use their privilege to get away with their crimes. I don’t think they learned any lesson. they did all this for a daughter who dropped out cause she wanted to be a youtube star. that was their real punishment. committing a crime for nothing.

That’s an excellent point – the two of them fighting the charges for so long made matters worse. Felicity Huffman owned up, served her time & was out of jail while Lori Loughlin & Mossimo Giannulli were still battling in court. Refusing to accept responsibility for so long only prolonged the inevitable – for themselves & their daughters.

While I absolutely agree she could have made things easier on herself by just owning up to the charges, She might have been following her lawyers advice to plead not guilty going in. Because then it’s on the state’s burden to prove guilt. Then during discovery is when you find out what proof they have. My totally ‘non legal’ background has me thinking when they knew what the state had is when they changed their plea. Pure speculation on my part. But to your point this didn’t work out for her at all – her family was exposed for their selfishness and they didn’t even have to work so hard to get the kid into college.

They have a right to plead not guilty and then lose-fair or square. Well, you are free to assume they did not learn their lesson and not want to see her in anything but they also have a right to move on with their lives, with or without your forgiveness or audience.

Hallmark has not been the same without Lori. I have always loved her and will continue. Welcome back Lori ♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

She’s not a sweetheart. She’s a criminal who raised entitled children and they got caught.

Well, here’s to second chances.

Yes welcome back Lori. I have missed your Garage Sale mysteries. You got a really bad deal from Hallmark. Are the Garage Sale movies for sale on DVD?

That’s fine with me. I enjoy her. She paid her time.

Go ahead and cast her in whatever you want, that’s fine. She’s allowed to still work. But I’d probably stop short of calling her America’s sweetheart.

I think anyone who has paid their debt to society should be able t move on in whatever way is safe for everyone. I’m not really speaking about Lori Loughlin right now, because she’s very rich, but the way ex-convicts are basically blackballed from ever having a decent paying job ever again is a travesty.

a fraud is america’s sweetheart? What an apt indictment of american values today. glad I don’t have GAC

I’m pretty sure she was their second choice, because Meryl Streep was busy.

Everything to Know About Lori Loughlin’s ‘Fall Into Winter’ Movie: Details About Her 1st Great American Family Film camel color coat

New year, new Lori! Fall Into Winter marks Lori Loughlin ’s TV movie comeback — and her first film as a lead for Great American Family.

“Lori is a genre-defining star that I have had the honor to call a close friend and collaborator for more than 15 years,” president and CEO of Great American Media Bill Abbott   said in a September 2022 press release . “We have a shared vision for creating meaningful and memorable movies that resonate with our passionate fans, and I look forward to welcoming her back to Great American Family to anchor our 2023 winter programming slate.”

Loughlin, 58, was a major star on the Hallmark Channel for more than six years before the network cut ties with her in 2019 amid the college admissions scandal. (Abbott, 60, was the channel’s CEO from 2009 to 2020.)

The Full House alum made headlines in March 2019 after she and husband Mossimo Giannulli were accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters, Bella , now 24, and Olivia Jade , now 23, into college.

The couple pleaded guilty to fraud charges in May 2020. Loughlin served two months in prison , while her husband, 59, served five months. The Garage Sale Mysteries star and the designer also completed their required community service hours upon their respective releases.

The Homegrown Christmas actress joined forces with Great American Media , which Abbott founded in 2021 , for her acting return in December 2021. She reprised her Hallmark role as Abigail Stanton in the two-episode holiday special, When Hope Calls: A Country Christmas .

We had good connection over that and a lot of gratitude to be on set just one more time.”

The Summerland alum’s acting resurgence will continue with Great American Family ’s Fall Into Winter , which premieres on Saturday, January 28, at 8 p.m. ET.

One of the worst movie sins is when a comedy fails to at least match the natural charisma of its stars. Not all actors are capable of being effortlessly witty without a tightly crafted script and some excellent direction and editing. But Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt seem, at least from afar, adept at that game. Just look at their charming press tour for “The Fall Guy.” Theirs is the kind of fun banter that can be a little worrisome — what if their riffing is better than the movie?

It comes as a great relief, then, that “The Fall Guy” lives up to its promise. Here is a delightful blend of action, comedy and romance that will make the audience feel like a Hollywood insider for a few hours (although there are perhaps one too many jokes about Comic-Con and Hall H).

Loosely based on the 1980s Lee Majors television series about a stuntman who made some extra cash on the side bounty hunting, Gosling takes up the mantle of said stunt guy, Colt Seavers.

Colt is a workaday stunt performer and longtime go-to for a major movie star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Tom is the kind of deeply egotistical and self-conscious A-lister who tells everyone he does his own stunts and worries out loud about Colt’s jawline being distractingly softer than his. I think the word “potato” is thrown around as a descriptor. Taylor-Johnson has quite a bit of fun playing up all his eccentricities that you hope, and fear, are at least somewhat inspired by real horror stories of stars behaving badly.

The film comes from director David Leitch, the Brad Pitt stuntman and stunt coordinator who helped bring “John Wick” to the world and directed “Atomic Blonde” and “Bullet Train.” He’s a guy who not only has the vision and know-how to bring the best in stunts to films and make them pop, but also has a vested interest in putting them in the spotlight. Forget the Oscar, how about just any acknowledgement? Perhaps “The Fall Guy” is just one tiny step on the path to making audiences more aware of some of the behind-the-scenes people who really make movies better and risk it all to do so.

It’s revealing that the movie starts with Colt suffering a terrible injury on a set. The stunt that goes wrong is one he’s just done and doesn’t seem remotely nervous about. The film cuts to his recovery and semi-reclusive retirement until he gets a call from Tom’s producer Gail (a delightfully over-the-top Hannah Waddingham) begging Colt to come back for a new film. They need him, she pleads, as does his longtime crush Jody (Blunt), who is making her directorial debut. She waits to inform him that Tom is missing and he’s the one who has to find him. On the quest, Colt encounters tough-guy goons, enablers, a sword-wielding actress, and a dead body on ice that all lead up to something big and rotten. And like a selfless stunt guy, he does it all out of sight of Jody — trying his best to save her movie without giving her something extra to worry about. Nothing about it is particularly plausible, but it’s not hard to get on board for the ride, and much of that is because of Gosling.

While he’s not quite underappreciated for his comedic timing, especially after “Barbie,” it’s fun to get to see him really embrace and lean into the goofiness — whether it’s crying and singing along to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” or quoting movie lines to his stunt coordinator pal (Winston Duke, always a good addition) in the midst of an actual fight.

There is something very juvenile and sweet about Jody and Colt’s will-they-won’t-they romance, with its mix of attraction, banter, misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It was a genius stroke to cast these two opposite each other and it leaves you wanting more scenes with the two.

Working with a script from Drew Pearce (“Hobbs & Shaw”), Leitch packs the film with wall-to-wall action, in both the film’s movie sets and its real world. And with the self-referential humor, the industry jokes and the promise of a little romance, it feels like one of those movies we all complain they don’t make anymore.

“The Fall Guy,” a Universal Picture release in theaters Friday, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “action and violence, drug content and some strong language.” Running time: 126 minutes. Three stars out of four.

‘The Fall Guy’ Review – Action-Heavy, Stunt-Loving Absurdity

Loosely based on the 1981 TV series of the same name, which ran for five seasons and 113 episodes and starred Lee Majors and Heather Thomas, The Fall Guy has been in development since 2010.

In The Fall Guy , Colt Seavers (Gosling) has a reputation as one of, if not, the best stunt performers in the business. He is dating a camera operator named Jody Moreno (Blunt), and everything seems to be going well until a freak accident leaves Colt with a broken back. Colt disappears from the industry for 18 months and ghosts Jody at the height of their relationship.

L to R: Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in THE FALL GUY, directed by David Leitch. Image property of Universal Pictures.

Colt has seemingly moved on from the business until producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) convinces him that Jody has asked for Colt specifically to work on her directorial debut. However, once Colt arrives on set, it’s revealed that he’s brought in to help locate missing action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Initially, The Fall Guy begins as a behind-the-scenes look at action blockbusters, where there’s this close-knit crew that finds work on the same films. In particular, Jody’s film Metalstorm has a gag where pyro is being set off too early, and the writing of her third act is having trouble coming to fruition.

The film’s secondary storyline sees Colt investigating Tom’s disappearance, which is essentially another movie in itself with all of its twists and turns and crazy action pieces that no one seems to see but the audience.

The Fall Guy works best during its action sequences, followed somewhat closely by its comedy, with romance being its weakest link. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have good chemistry together as Colt Seavers and Jody Moreno, but they’re more believable as friends than as lovers.

Penned by Drew Pearce ( Hobbs & Shaw , Hotel Artemis ), The Fall Guy has a bumbling sense of humor that needs about five or six of its world record-breaking 8.5 cannon rolls before it starts being funny.

Most of the humor can be found in long-winded rambles and the cringe-induced discomfort that comes with something dragging on much longer than it should. One example is Colt and Jody airing their issues over a bullhorn amongst the entire Metalstorm crew.

While the comedic back-and-forth banter between Gosling and Blunt feels genuine, albeit likely improvised, any sequence involving the two of them being intimate feels forced. Since there’s conflict and a disconnect between them throughout most of the film, this may have been done on purpose, but it’s also unequivocally the least enjoyable aspect of the film.

In contrast, take Dan Tucker (Winston Duke) for example, who is the stunt coordinator on Metalstorm and Colt’s best friend. In the film, Dan constantly references and quotes movies, while Winston Duke’s bromance with Ryan Gosling is arguably more entertaining than Gosling’s with Blunt in the film.

L to R: Winston Duke is Dan Tucker and Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers in THE FALL GUY, directed by David Leitch.

The writing in The Fall Guy is ridiculous, but it finds a stride of brilliance in its second half. Jodie’s film Metalstorm, for example. is a not-so-subtle metaphor for her broken relationship with Colt, but it’s injected into this sci-fi actioner with cowboys and aliens.

Director David Leitch ( Bullet Train , Deadpool 2 ) was a stuntman for 20 years before directing Atomic Blonde in 2017. Leitch knows how to create memorable action sequences, and The Fall Guy has several. The club scene with blacklight lighting feels like an homage to Sin City , and the garbage truck chase through the streets of Sidney is wild and glorious.

The Fall Guy tries to be the biggest action film imaginable. It is like The Other Guys if it leaned heavier into action than comedy. It has the rambling dialogue of Anchorman and the amusing behind-the-scenes mayhem of Tropic Thunder .

Ryan Gosling continues to dominate Hollywood by adding believable action stars to his already impressive resume, even if he did have four stunt doubles for this film. Stunts have gone underappreciated for a long time, and The Fall Guy gives stuntmen a monster-truck-sized tribute that crashes and smashes its way into our hearts before lighting it on fire and doing it all over again.

'The Iron Claw' Review: Zac Efron Delivers a Knockout Performance

Writer-director Sean Durkin has created a truly haunting film.

The Big Picture

  • Wrestling is a lot of smoke and mirrors in The Iron Claw , but it doesn't mean the pain and consequences aren't real.
  • The film explores how the Von Erich family's toxic dynamics and abusive parenting led to tragedy and turmoil.
  • It portrays the Von Erichs as multidimensional characters, experiencing both everyday joys and incomprehensible sorrow.

Wrestling is a façade. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, innately a lesser art form, or that the participants don’t put a lot of effort into those matches. It’s just that wrestling is, like so much entertainment, a lot of smoke and mirrors. What seems spontaneous in the ring is often rehearsed heavily beforehand. Adversaries in public can be best buddies in the locker room. Given that the Von Erich family (the central subjects of the new Sean Durkin film The Iron Claw ) are so entrenched in the world of wrestling, it's no wonder that their entire rapport is one big masquerade . In the ring, they were unstoppable wrestling machines. In their private lives, they were tormented by toxic family dynamics and harmful approaches to masculinity .

The Iron Claw (2023)

The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.

Wrestling may be a façade, but that doesn’t mean the punches and bruises you get in the ring don’t hurt. Similarly, all that concealing of actual feelings and desires had very real consequences on the various members of the Von Erich family, particularly the sons of this household who were all expected to be wrestling legends. Durkin’s depiction of this rocky familial dynamic benefits greatly both from his clear passion for the family and his experience handling movies like Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Nest that chronicled similar dynamics. Even if the proceedings sometimes lapse into familiar biopic movie territory, Durkin injects a sense of emotional reality into The Iron Claw that ensures it packs a wallop.

What Is 'The Iron Claw' About?

One of the biggest names in the world of wrestling was the Texas-residing Von Erich family. Led by father Fritz Von Erich ( Holt McCallany ) and Mother Doris Von Erich ( Maura Tierney ), brothers Kevin ( Zac Efron ), Kerry ( Jeremy Allen White ), and David ( Harris Dickinson ) helped lead the family into the history books when it came to wrestling. Younger son Mike ( Stanley Simons ), meanwhile, has his sights on musical ambitions beyond the ring. Though the Von Erichs were household names, they also lived with the idea of some sort of fabled "curse" lingering over them. Preordained supernatural forces are less to blame for the family’s woes, though, than the abusive parenting style of Fritz, who treats his sons like objects meant to secure the family's glory rather than actual human beings. Being wrapped up in that dynamic and so much toxic masculinity cannot just result in good times eternal. Soon, the Von Erichs find themselves plagued by endless turmoil more devastating than any blow in the ring.

Durkin's screenplay is trying to cover a lot of ground in The Iron Claw , not just in terms of years but also the number of characters. Inevitably, it succumbs to the classic biopic flaw of sometimes feeling like all narrative and visual impulses are being bent to the will of historical comprehensiveness. Some key events that should be seismic breeze right by thanks to how much material this script must cram in. Most disappointingly, Lily James as Pam Adkisson (the eventual wife of Kevin Von Erich) is around to play the standard "biopic wife" archetype despite this performer bringing lots of charisma to the role. Wrestling is often so entertaining because of its unexpected twists on expectations. The weakest element of The Iron Claw , by contrast, is how much it fits the mold of a standard biopic movie.

'The Iron Claw' Juggles Everyday Joys With Trauma

While Durkin’s screenplay wobbles with realizing its most expansive ambitions, it does prove quite compelling in its structure. Specifically, The Iron Claw is a movie that divides itself into two halves. In the first half, the camera lingers on the Von Erich boys just being humans. They drink beer on rafts on a nearby river, cheer on Mike at his band practice, and stumble their way through reciting lines in promotional ads. There’s a sense of naturalism rather than hagiography in the way they’re framed in these early stretches. They’re allowed to exist as fully dimensional human beings with flaws, joy, and everything in between beyond the tragedies that will come to define their legacy in the real world. There’s also an incredibly believable and oddly sweet rapport actors Dickson, Efron, and Simons have in those nonchalant sequences. That kind of dynamic helps sell the idea that these guys are brothers who’ve known each other for decades. However, Durkin also injects a quietly bittersweet quality into even the most triumphant experiences thanks to the looming presence of Fritz Von Erich. His attitude and constant influence over the behavior of these wrestlers make it clear this tranquility can’t last. Viewers are conscious that the joys we’re witnessing are temporary rather than permanent.

This narrative route ensures the second half, which focuses on the spiraling series of tragedies that plagued the Von Erich family, hits like a ton of bricks. Fritz’s parenting tactics make the idea of horrors befalling these people far from a shock. However, it’s still deeply heartbreaking to watch characters we’ve enjoyed seeing navigate the little joys of everyday existence grappling with incomprehensible sorrow. The power of that anguish is enhanced by this filmmaker’s clever use of restraint in depicting the most harrowing moments in the lives of these Von Erich sons . A fateful motorcycle accident involving Kerry, for instance, doesn’t see this wrestler collide with a car or stumble off the road. We just see him speeding down the road, trying to outrun the internal problems he doesn’t want to confront.

That subdued quality is also interestingly captured in the performers. Actors like Efron, White, and Dickinson are especially fascinating in this regard, as they must portray wrestlers with believably outsized public personas who quietly communicate bottled-up internal pain in their interactions behind closed doors. They're very much up to this daunting task, with Efron especially impressing in a role that other actors could’ve sleepwalked through. In playing Kevin, Efron must portray a husk of a man who doesn’t realize he’s a husk. Living with a father who forbids any displays of emotion or autonomy, there’s an emptiness in Kevin. He’s a vessel for his dad’s wishes, not an independent human. Efron heartbreakingly captures this quality in starkly realistic terms, like his initial quiet confusion over Adkisson hugging him for the first time in public. This comedy and musical movie veteran reminds viewers of the long-term impact of generational trauma within Kevin’s void, which registers as one of the most impressive feats within The Iron Claw .

'The Iron Claw' Is a Haunting Drama

The entire rock-solid cast (Tierney especially crushes any material she gets, including one unforgettable pre-funeral scene) is captured within a visual style often emphasizing lingering single-takes and wider shots. These choices create an often haunting quality to the images in The Iron Claw , particularly one dimly lit nighttime conversation between Kerry and Kevin after a seemingly triumphant day in the ring for the family. A big victory and a shiny belt haven’t eased their emotional woes, a quandary nicely reflected in the precise lighting and camerawork of this scene. These kinds of visually intimate sequences also make for a fitting contrast to any time the camera is filming the Von Erichs in the ring in front of a roaring crowd. There’s a frenzied energy to these sequences that makes for great opposition to the hauntingly quiet scenes of domestic struggles between these wrestlers.

The façade of the ring cannot keep the darkness within the Von Erich’s at bay for long . The Iron Claw succumbs to the powerful blows of biopic movie standards, there’s no denying it. But its most insightful qualities rooted in the dissonance between the persona of the Von Erichs and their psychological struggles ensure it scores plenty of cinematic KO’s.

The Iron Claw is a haunting drama with a knockout perfromance by Zac Efron.

  • Beyond Efron, all of the cast are pitch-perfect.
  • The film successfully juggles everyday joys with trauma.
  • There is a visual intimacy to the smaller scenes just as there is a frenzied energy to the wrestling.
  • The film can sometimes lapse into familiar biopic movie territory.

The Iron Claw is now available to stream on Max in the U.S.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Review: Hail, Caesar

The latest installment in an excellent series finds mythology turning into power.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ | Anatomy of a Scene

The director wes ball narrates a sequence from his film..

I’m Wes Ball, director of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” This is a little sequence in the very beginning of the movie after our trio of apes here, Noa, Soona and Anaya, have just had a little adventure and they’re on their way back to their village, where we get to meet the life of Eagle Clan and where Noa and his family reside, this little isolated existence. And we get to see the way the apes live in this world with their eagles. And and how this ritual of collecting their egg, which they’re going to raise as companions, which is part of the way the Eagle Clan kind of works in their culture. And the goal was really just to set up a world that was wonderful, that was ultimately going to be forever changed when the course of events leads to Noa’s village being attacked for the most part, everything you see here was actually shot with the actors. We shoot it twice, we shoot it once with the actors and all of their little performance things and the camera movement and everything. So we are shooting a regular movie. It just happens to be that these guys are wearing these kind of strange suits along with the cameras and the dots on their face that captures all the performance. And then I have to go in and then re- duplicate those shots without the apes, which is where I choose. Whatever performance I choose now gets dropped into the scene itself. So this isn’t something where we just kind of animate the characters after the fact. We’re actually on location and they’re there in their digital costumes, essentially, acting out everything you see on camera, with the exception of, say, background action, there’s a group of apes in the background playing what we called monkey ball, and just we did that all on stage. So that’s kind of the beauty of the power of this process, is that we can populate this whole scene with hundreds of apes. But we only needed a handful of apes on set. This is Dar, Noa’s mother, who’s a fantastic character, played by Sara Wiseman, who did a great job. “I knew you would climb well.” “He waits.” And this character of Noa here, you kind start to see this relationship that he has with his father, which is an interesting kind of relationship that I imagine a lot of people could relate to. They don’t know quite how to communicate with each other, but there’s obviously still love there. It’s an interesting process where I can take all these different little elements and layer them all together and stack them into this — what you see is the end result here, this little idyllic community.

For a series with a goofy premise — what if talking apes overthrew humanity — the “Planet of the Apes” universe is uncommonly thoughtful, even insightful. If science fiction situates us in a universe that’s just different enough to slip daring questions past our mental barriers, then the “Apes” movies are among the best examples. That very premise, launched with talking actors in ape costumes in the 1968 film, has given storytellers a lot to chew on, contemplating racism, authoritarianism, police brutality and, in later installments, the upending of human society by a brutal, fast-moving virus. (Oops.)

Those later virus-ridden installments, a trilogy released between 2011 and 2017, are among the series’ best, and well worth revisiting. The newest film, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” picks up exactly where that trilogy left off: with the death of Caesar, the ultrasmart chimpanzee who has led the apes away from what’s left of humanity and into a paradise. (The scene was a direct quotation of the story of Moses leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, but dying before he could set foot there.) The apes honor his memory and vow to keep his teachings, especially the first dictum — “ape not kill ape.” Caesar preached a gospel of peacefulness, loyalty, generosity, nonaggression and care for the earth; unlike the humans, they intend to live in harmony.

The teachings of peaceful prophets, however, tend to be twisted by power-seekers, and apparently this isn’t just a human problem. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, leaps forward almost immediately by “many generations” (years matter less in this post-human world), and the inevitable has happened. The apes have fractured into tribes, while Caesar has passed from historical figure to mythic one, a figure venerated by some and forgotten by most.

That there even was a Caesar is unknown to Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee whose father, Koro (Neil Sandilands) is leader of his clan and an avid breeder of birds. That clan has its own laws, mostly having to do with how to treat birds’ nests, and that’s all that Noa and his friends Anaya (Travis Jeffery) and Soona (Lydia Peckham) have known.

But then one day tragedy strikes, in the form of an attack on the clan by the soldiers of Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), the leader of a clan of coastal apes. Noa finds himself alone, searching for his clan, who have been carted away. On his journey Noa meets a human (Freya Allen) who, like the other humans, doesn’t speak.

At this point in the evolution of the virus, mutations have rendered any surviving humanity speechless and dull-witted, living in roving bands and running from predators; to the apes it’s as preposterous to imagine a talking human as a talking ape is to us. But he also meets Raka (Peter Macon), who believes himself to be the last of the faithful followers of Caesar’s peaceful teachings, even wearing Caesar’s diamond-shaped symbol around his neck. (Eagle-eyed viewers will recall that the symbol echoes the shape of the window in the room in which Caesar was raised as a baby.) Noa learns from Raka. And when he finds what he’s looking for, he realizes he has an important job to do.

Two apes and a woman with serious looks stand near a body of water.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is not quite as transporting as the previous trilogy, perhaps because the apes now act so much like humans that the fruitful dissonance in our minds has mostly been mitigated. It’s simpler to imagine the apes as just stand-in humans when they’re all talking, and thus easier to just imagine you’re watching, say, “The Lion King” or something.

But there’s still a tremendous amount to mull over here, like Proximus Caesar, who borrows the idea of Caesar to prop up his own version of leadership. The real Caesar was undoubtedly strong and brave, but Proximus Caesar has mutated this into swagger and shows of force, an aggression designed to keep his apes in line. He is not brutal, exactly; He is simply insistently powerful and more than a bit of a fascist. Every morning, he greets his subjects by proclaiming that it is a “wonderful day,” and that he is Caesar’s rightful heir, and that they must all work together as one to build their civilization ever stronger.

Visual cues indicate that Proximus Caesar’s kingdom is modeled partly on the Roman Empire, with its colonizing influence and its intention to sweep the riches of the ancient human world — its history, its labor, its technology — into its own coffers. By telling his version of Caesar’s legacy, Proximus Caesar makes the apes believe they are part of some mighty, unstoppable force of history.

But of course, history has a habit of repeating itself, whether it’s ancient Rome or Egypt, and in Proximus Caesar’s proclamations one detects a bit of Ozymandias : Look on his works, ye mighty, and despair! “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is set in the future, but like a lot of science fiction — “Dune,” for instance, or “Battlestar Galactica,” or Walter Miller’s “A Canticle for Leibowitz” — there’s a knowing sense that all this has happened before, and all this will happen again.

That’s what makes “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” powerful, in the end. It probes how the act of co-opting idealisms and converting them to dogmas has occurred many times over. What’s more, it points directly at the immense danger of romanticizing the past, imagining that if we could only reclaim and reframe and resurrect history, our present problems would be solved. Golden ages were rarely actually golden, but history is littered with leaders who tried to make people believe they were anyhow. It’s a great way to make people do their bidding.

There are some hints near the end of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” of what might be next for the franchise, should it be fated to continue. But the uneasy fun of the series is we already know what happens, eventually; it was right there in the first movie, and the warning it poses remains bleak.

At the start of the 1968 film, the star Charlton Heston explains, “I can’t help thinking somewhere in the universe there has to be something better than man.” You might have expected, from a movie like this, that “better” species would be these apes. But it turns out we might have to keep looking.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Rated PG-13, for scenes of peril and woe and a couple of funny, mild swear words. Running time: 2 hours 25 minutes. In theaters.
