Essay on Make in India

Make in India means to encourage foreign investment that brings the latest technology, broadens the realm of knowledge, and infuses research and development within the country.

In 2013, India was in a severe economic crisis when the emerging market had crashed and the growth rate had fallen drastically. The global investors were contemplating their investment in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Make in India’ program amidst the crisis situation on 25 th September 2014, which aimed at attracting foreign companies to set up factories in India and invest in the country’s infrastructure.

The ‘Make in India’ campaign aims at promoting India as a destination of foreign investments and a pivot for manufacturing, design, and innovation globally. The ‘Make in India’ initiative does not only target the manufacturing Sector but also aims at promoting entrepreneurship in the country.

This initiative further aims at creating a favorable environment for investment, modern infrastructure, opening up new sectors for foreign investment, and establishing a partnership between government and industry through a broader outlook.

The manufacturing sector currently contributes to 15% of the country’s GDP. The action plan of the mission is to raise the contribution to 25% of the GDP by 2020.

A lion with a body made up of clogs inspired from the Ashoka Chakra Symbolizes the mission. The lion on the prowl in the logo stands for strength and power and the wheels on the body of the lion signify development and progress. Through this mission, the government took a big step to reduce the level of unemployment faced by the youth of the country.

This campaign was launched a day after the Mars Mission when the PM had to go on his first visit to the USA. The aim of launching this campaign was to raise the level of the manufacturing sector in India, which will definitely boost the Indian economy.

Guidelines and Policy for Make in India

The government laid new Guidelines to start the mission successfully. The main objective of the Guidelines was to sanction the projects that are approved by state governments. Some Guidelines are like:

Reduce paperwork required for establishing companies.

Minimize the time required for government approvals.

Abolish the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from the project cost.

Policies have been made for convenient transfer of funds while switching jobs anywhere in the country. A cell was dedicated to responding to the queries for business entities through a web portal.

Sectors That Were Identified Under The ‘Make In India’ Mission:

There are twenty-five Sectors that were identified under this mission. It includes Automobile, automobile parts, aviation, biotechnology, chemicals, construction, defense production, electrical machinery, electronic systems, food process, IT and BPM, leather, entertainment and media, mining, oil and gas, pharmaceutical industry, shipping, railways, renewable energy, roads and highways, space, textiles and garments, thermal power, tourism and hospitality, wellness.

Benefits and Criticism

Labor and natural resources are available in plenty in India and that Makes it a preferred manufacturing destination. More job opportunities can be provided for the huge population.

The manufacturing Sectors will not only boost the trading Sector but also increase the GDP of the Indian economy. The opening of factories will contribute to the development of the rural sector.

This highly beneficiary initiative faces several challenges like rigid labor laws, red tape at providing environmental clearance for big projects, poor technology, and transportation system.

The increase in production leads to the growth in the economy of any country. Make in India campaign will provide a platform for many small entrepreneurs to grow and employment to a huge population. The investments coming from foreign companies and growth in the manufacturing sector can raise the bar of the Indian economy.

Is There Any Disadvantage Associated with the Concept of Make in India?

Every concept has some advantages and disadvantages associated with it. The Make in India concept is no exception as well. Since the campaign of Make in India demands a lot of industrial sectors and the development of technologies, the agricultural sector will be neglected because most of the Indian population earns their livelihoods through it. The development of industrial Sectors demands a lot of plots, water, and other natural resources. Currently, India is not in the position to allow the unnecessary depletion of natural resources in order to develop industrial Sectors.

Since plots are highly required in order to establish a particular industrial Sector, the industrialists will use the lands that are available for agricultural purposes. Moreover, the journey of the common business people and entrepreneurs will be halted.

With the development of industrial Sectors, the necessity to seek help from franchisees will also increase due to the requirement of funds. Only international private Sectors can arrange for a huge amount of funds to invest in and it will contradict the goals of the campaign itself. Also, there is a chance of increased pollution due to the development of industrial Sectors.

What is the Primary Importance of the Make in India Campaign?

The campaign can prove to be highly important for the growth of India as a country. To cope up with work pressure, the various industrial Sectors recruit young aspirants who are talented and in need of urgent jobs. The campaign will help India to build a strong reputation all over the world as a manufacturing hub and a lot of international private Sectors will show their interest to manufacture their own products in India. A lot of people will get the opportunity to develop their skills depending on the market trends as well.

But, to make the campaign even more successful, the government needs to take special care of the other Sectors apart from chemicals and aviation. A lot of research projects are undertaken by researchers in the field of chemistry and aviation. But the Make in India campaign is not particularly successful in terms of building the reputation of an efficient manufacturing hub.

What are the Major Challenges that should be Taken Care of in order to Make the Campaign Successful?

In order to Make a particular campaign successful, a lot of difficulties and issues should be addressed at the same time. India is a country where various political debates take place at times and this usually impacts the Industrial Sectors. A lot of people in India do not have the basic education that is needed to develop their skills and contribute to various kinds of industrial Sectors.

The people of India often face difficulties to carry out their tasks properly due to insufficient power supply. The infrastructure of various Industrial Sectors in India is not really developed and this hampers the workflow. The people of India often face other challenges as well like poor drainage systems in order to flush out the toxins of the factories. To Make any particular campaign successful in India, the government must take remedial steps at once.

What is the Importance of Having Knowledge of the Make in India Campaign?

It is highly important for the students and the common people to remain updated about the latest occurrences that are taking place and are considered highly important in terms of the growth and development of the nation. The students who are appearing for their class examinations may need to answer some questions regarding this topic.

The students are often asked to deliver a speech on one of the important topics like this. They are often asked to write essays. In order to write a particular essay, the students need to have at least some basic information on the topic. To know more about such campaigns, the students should build the habit of reading newspapers and following the latest blogs and articles published on the websites.

There are various articles published on the website of Vedantu that deal with different topics and social awareness movements. Introduction to Make In India

Make in India is an initiative by the Government of India to encourage companies to manufacture their products in India. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014. The initiative also aims to attract foreign investors to invest in India.

The Make in India initiative has three key pillars: # Creating a favorable environment for investment # Encouraging innovation # Building world-class infrastructure

The Make in India initiative is expected to boost the economy of India and create jobs. The government has also set up a website, makeinindia.com, which provides information about the investment opportunities and policies in India.

Benefits of Make In India

There are many reasons to support the Make in India initiative. Perhaps the most compelling reason is that it can help to create jobs and spur economic growth. When businesses set up shop in India, they need workers to staff their operations. This can lead to more job opportunities for Indian citizens, which can in turn help to boost the economy.

Make in India can also help to improve infrastructure. When businesses invest in India, they often do so with the intention of improving roads, railways, and other forms of transportation. This can make it easier for people to get around, which can be a huge benefit for those who live in rural areas. Additionally, better infrastructure can lead to increased trade and investment, which can further stimulate economic growth.

Finally, Make in India can help to promote foreign investment. By making it easier for businesses to set up operations in India, the initiative can attract companies from all over the world. This foreign investment can bring much-needed capital into the country, which can be used to finance development projects or expand existing businesses.

Challenges Faced by Make In India

There are various challenges faced by the Make in India initiative. Firstly, the cost of setting up manufacturing units in India is high as compared to other Asian countries. This is due to the lack of infrastructure and skilled labor. Secondly, the Indian government has not been able to provide sufficient incentives to attract foreign investors. As a result, many multinational companies are reluctant to set up their manufacturing units in India.

Thirdly, the bureaucratic hurdles and red tape involved in setting up a business in India are a major deterrent for foreign investors. Fourthly, the inconsistency in policies and regulations from one state to another makes it difficult for businesses to operate smoothly across different states in India. Lastly, the social unrest and law and order situation in some parts of the country make it unsafe for businesses to operate there.

Solutions to Overcome the Challenges

There are numerous solutions that can be implemented in order to overcome the challenges faced by the Make in India campaign. Some of these solutions are listed below:

1. The government should focus on providing more incentives and subsidies to businesses who are willing to set up manufacturing units in India.

2. The infrastructure needs to be improved in order to make India a more attractive destination for foreign investors.

3. There is a need to develop a skilled workforce which can man the various manufacturing units that will come up as a part of the Make in India campaign.

4. The bureaucracy needs to be streamlined so as to make it easier for businesses to operate in India.

5. Corruption needs to be tackled at all levels so as to ensure a level playing field for all businesses operating in India.

Growth Strategies for Make In India

Make in India is an ambitious initiative launched by the Indian government in September 2014 to encourage companies to manufacture their products in India and thereby boost the country’s economy. The goal of Make in India is to increase the manufacturing sector’s share of the Indian economy from its current 15% to 25% by the year 2025. In order to achieve this, the government has implemented a number of policies and initiatives, including providing financial incentives, simplifying regulations, and improving infrastructure.

One of the key growth strategies for Make in India is to attract foreign investment. To this end, the Indian government has streamlined the process for setting up businesses in India and has relaxed some FDI restrictions. Additionally, a number of industrial corridors are being developed across the country with the aim of making it easier for companies to set up manufacturing facilities.

Another key strategy for driving growth under Make in India is to promote entrepreneurship and support small businesses. The government has launched a number of programs such as startup incubators and venture capital funds to provide funding and mentorship to entrepreneurs. Additionally, tax breaks and other incentives are being provided to encourage people to set up new businesses.

The Make in India initiative also aims to improve infrastructure so that companies can more easily set up manufacturing facilities in India. A number of industrial parks are being developed with world-class infrastructure, while plans are also underway to upgrade existing airports, seaports, and roads. All of these efforts should make it easier for companies to do business in India.

Finally, the Make in India initiative also seeks to increase the availability of skilled labor in the country. This is being achieved through investment in vocational education and training, as well as encouraging greater participation of women in the workforce. These efforts should help ensure that India has a large pool of skilled workers that companies can tap into for their manufacturing needs.

Impact of Make In India on Economy

Make in India is an initiative by the Government of India to encourage companies to manufacture their products in India. The initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014.

The Make in India initiative aims to increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP from 15% to 25% by 2025. It also aims to create 100 million jobs in the next five years.

The initiative has been successful in attracting investment from various companies. As a result, the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP has increased from 15% in 2014-15 to 18% in 2017-18. This has led to an increase in employment opportunities in the country.

In conclusion, Make in India is an ambitious initiative with the potential to transform India’s economy and bring it up to world class standards. The government has taken a number of steps to make this happen, including providing incentives and creating favorable conditions for businesses. It is now up to all stakeholders – companies, industry associations and citizens – to do their part by contributing towards making this campaign successful. With sustained effort from all sides, Make in India can be the platform that catapults India into a global superpower.

The mission had its origin in the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech, inviting global companies to pick India to locate factories, promising to replace hurdles with red-carpet welcomes. Make in India, an international marketing campaigning slogan was officially launched on 25 September 2014.

The push for manufacturing could not have come at a better time as today, India needs to grow faster to increase the income level. It will create jobs for over a million people who join the workforce every year. “We at the Tata Group welcome PM Modi’s INJake in India program. It’s an opportunity to make India truly and globally competitive,” was related by Tata group CEO Cyrus Mistry. The perfect logo of the mission is personified by a lion with a mechanical body. Modi exclaimed that the logo is derived from Ashoka Chakra.

The lion in the logo stands for strength and power while the wheels are a sign of development and progress. He further said: “My definition of FDI for the people of India is First Develop India.” While inviting world-class companies to India, Narendra Modi also requested Indian manufacturers not to leave the country and supported that Indian companies too should shine as multinational companies.

On this ITC chairman, YC Deveshwar said: “The boldness of your vision and the simplicity with which you have communicated it is inspiring.” For a fruitful start, the new government has laid guidelines for the progress of the project. Some examples are: reducing the paperwork required for establishing companies and minimising the time required for government approvals, abolishing the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from the project cost. Guidelines have been issued for quickening clearances to projects that are approved by state governments.

Policies have been made for the easy transfer of funds while switching jobs anywhere in the country. A dedicated cell has been created to answer queries from business entities through a newly created web portal. These are some mere steps taken while the government, with the help of experts, is trying hard to improve every bit.

Make In India Essay

Short Essay on Make in India 200 Words in English

Below we have given a short essay on Make in India For Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. This short essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 6 and below.

Analysts give the reason as to why the mission could prove beneficial for India: contrasting to farming, which employs nearly 50% of population, but contributes just 1 4% to GDP. The services sector contributes nearly 60% to the economy, but employs just around 27% of workforce. Indian manufacturers are becoming more competitive with respect to their product designs, manufacturing and testing facilities. Additionally, India is the third largest producer of chemicals in Asia and sixth by output, in the world. Through the last four decades, India’s space programme has attracted global attention for its accelerated rate of development.

These few examples support the fact that India has every potential to compete with developed nations. However as a flip side of a coin, there are some challenges too. India’s poor infrastructure and logistics shortfall with inefficient transport networks makes it tough for manufacturing companies to achieve just-in-time production. “The combination of improved transport connectivity and simplified, one point collection of taxation will go a long way in implementing the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India’,” Deutsche Bank says.

A lot of sectors have been included in the mission some of which are as automobiles, chemicals, construction, ports, railways, space etc. Make in India’s success relies a lot on the fate of the newer companies. But, since its inception, a lot of reputed multinational companies have re-analysed their expansion plans. Narendra Modi is about to give the source, the tool to improve the purchasing power of the common man. The coming together of smart entrepreneurs, employees, infrastructure and know-how could over time become a durable advantage, as had happened in China’s case.

As part of India’s industrial renaissance, critical sectors -- from traditional industries like toy manufacturing to cutting-edge fields like semiconductor fabrication and defence production -- are seeing an incredible surge

India is witnessing a remarkable industrial surge, fuelled by the central government’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative. A decade after its launch in 2014, it aims to transform India into a global manufacturing powerhouse and the impact is evident. From traditional industries like toy manufacturing to cutting-edge fields like semiconductor fabrication and defence production, sectors are seeing an incredible surge.

Let us take a deep dive.

Strategic shift: India’s defence sector embraces self-reliance

The defence sector is undergoing a significant and deliberate transformation. Moving away from its historical reliance on imports, the country is embracing a future defined by self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

This strategic shift, spearheaded by the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, is reshaping India’s defence landscape and positioning the country as a potential global force in defence production. At the heart of this transformation is a series of concrete policy measures designed to incentivise domestic production and reduce import dependency.

The Interim Budget 2024-25 allocated a substantial Rs 1.72 lakh crore for modernisation and infrastructure development within the defence sector, a clear indication of the government’s commitment. This represents a 9.4 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Further, the ministry of defence has set a bold target of achieving a Rs 1.75 lakh crore turnover in aerospace and defence manufacturing by 2025. This vision includes a notable export target of Rs 35,000 crore, highlighting the Centre’s ambition to establish India as a major player in the global defence market.

Several initiatives form the backbone of this ambitious self-reliance strategy. The Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 stands as a cornerstone, prioritising indigenous design and development of defence equipment while simultaneously encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI) to establish manufacturing hubs within India.

A crucial element of DAP 2020 is the implementation of positive indigenisation lists, which encompass more than 5,000 items. These act as a roadmap for domestic production, clearly identifying the defence items that will be manufactured in India and, hence, gradually decreasing reliance on foreign suppliers.

The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrably evident in the explosive growth of India’s defence exports, which have experienced a remarkable 21-fold rise in the last decade, surging from Rs 4,312 crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14 to a substantial Rs 88,319 crore from 2014-15 to 2023-24, as per government data.

The tangible outcomes of this strategic shift are already taking shape, exemplified by the case of Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jets. While India initially acquired 36 Rafale fighters, the country’s aspirations extend beyond mere procurement.

Dassault Aviation is now in the process of acquiring land near Jewar International Airport to establish a dedicated maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility for India’s existing Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighters. The move paves the way for local production of the latest Rafale versions in India, aligning with the core principles of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The long-term requirement of the Indian Air Force for approximately 100 twin-engine multirole fighters over the next two decades, coupled with Dassault’s backlog of 300 fighter orders from other countries, presents a compelling opportunity.

Defence exports have continued their upward climb, reaching a record Rs 21,083 crore (approximately $2.63 billion) in the financial year 2023-24. This represents a healthy 32.5 percent growth over the previous fiscal, showcasing the sustained momentum of India’s indigenous defence production.

The remarkable growth in defence manufacturing and exports has generated a ripple effect, propelling the stock prices of many public sector units (PSU) involved in defence production to new heights. Adding to this positive trend is the noteworthy rise in the number of export authorisations issued to defence exporters in 2023-24, jumping from 1,414 in 2022-23 to 1,507, demonstrating the expanding reach of India’s defence products in the international market.

India’s defence sector is demonstrably at an inflection point.

Toys: From net importer to global contender

India’s toy industry has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a net importer to a global exporter. This turnaround is largely attributed to a series of strategic government policies designed to stimulate domestic production and curb imports.

A key policy intervention was the significant increase in import duty on toys, rising from 20 percent in 2019 to a substantial 70 percent in 2023. This effectively made imported toys, predominantly from China, significantly more expensive, establishing a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.

The consequence was a sharp decline in imports, shrinking by a substantial 79 percent between FY19 and FY24, as reported by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). Simultaneously, the government implemented a quality control order (QCO) in January 2021. This mandated that all toys sold in India, regardless of origin, adhere to the Indian Standards on Toys, ensuring children’s safety from substandard or unsafe products and bolstering the ecosystem for quality toy manufacturing within India.

The impact of these policies is reflected in the impressive 40 percent surge in toy exports between FY19 and FY24, showcasing the industry’s newfound global competitiveness.

Semiconductors: Attracting global giants, fostering domestic innovation

India’s semiconductor sector is experiencing a period of rapid growth, attracting significant investments from international giants like Micron Technology while simultaneously fostering the emergence of promising domestic startups. The cornerstone has been a substantial Rs 760 billion (over US$10 billion) package, announced in December 2021, aimed at stimulating both semiconductor and display manufacturing.

The package is designed to incentivise companies operating across the entire semiconductor value chain, from the complex process of fabrication to the crucial stage of assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP/OSAT). It seeks to position India as a global hub for electronics manufacturing, offering incentives of an impressive Rs 2.3 trillion (approximately US$30.16 billion) to attract investors.

Micron Technology, the world’s fifth-largest semiconductor company, has responded to this attractive proposition. The company announced a US$2.75 billion investment to establish an ATMP facility in Gujarat, a project projected to create 5,000 new jobs. This significant investment, which received approval from the Union Cabinet in June 2023, serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to drawing in major global players.

The government is concurrently focused on nurturing domestic startups through initiatives like the design linked incentive (DLI) scheme, which provides vital financial incentives and much-needed infrastructure support to Indian companies engaged in semiconductor design. The ultimate goal is to stimulate the creation of valuable domestic intellectual property and enhance indigenous chip design capabilities. It is a dual strategy of attracting global expertise and simultaneously cultivating homegrown talent.

According to a PIB update, the construction of four previously approved semiconductor units is rapidly progressing, contributing to the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem. These units, encompassing a Tata-PSMC commercial fab plant and three ATMP/OSAT plants, are attracting nearly Rs 1.5 trillion (US$18.15 billion) in investment. These projects are collectively expected to have a combined production capacity of approximately 70 million chips per day, signifying a substantial increase in India’s chipmaking capacity.

The success stories across these diverse sectors demonstrate the ‘Make in India’ initiative’s impact in stimulating industrial growth, enhancing economic resilience, and promoting global integration. By creating a conducive business environment, incentivising investments, and making domestic manufacturing a priority, the government is laying the foundation for a more competitive and self-reliant economy. It is poised to play a significant role in the intricate network of global supply chains and, while challenges remain, the progress made across these critical sectors suggests that the ‘Make in India’ initiative is delivering on its promise of transforming India into a global manufacturing powerhouse.

Why Make in India?

There are multiple reasons why the government has chosen to focus on manufacturing. The key ones are discussed below:

  • For the past two decades, India’s growth story seems to have been led by the services sector. This approach paid off in the short-run, and India’s IT and BPO sector saw a huge leap, and India was often dubbed the ‘back office of the world’. However, even though the share of the services sector in the Indian economy rose to 57% in 2013, it contributed to only 28% in the share of employment. So, the manufacturing sector needed to be augmented to boost employment. This is because the services sector currently has low absorption potential considering the demographic dividend in the country.
  • Another reason to launch the campaign is the poor condition of manufacturing in India. The share of manufacturing in the overall Indian economy is only about 15%. This is way lower than our neighbours in East Asia. There is an overall trade deficit when it comes to goods. The trade surplus in services hardly covers one-fifth of India’s trade deficit in goods. The services sector alone cannot hope to answer this trade deficit. Manufacturing will have to chip in. The government is hoping to encourage businesses, both Indian and foreign to invest in manufacturing in India, which will help this sector and also generate employment in both skilled and unskilled levels.
  • To focus on manufacturing is that no other sector seems to have such a huge multiplier effect on economic growth in a country, according to various studies. The manufacturing sector has larger backward linkages and hence, growth in demand in manufacturing spurs growth in other sectors as well. This generates more jobs, investments, and innovation, and generally leads to a higher standard of living in an economy.

Make in India – Initiatives

  • For the first time, the sectors of railways, insurance, defense, and medical devices have been opened up for more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
  • The maximum limit in FDI in the defense sector under the automatic route has been raised from 49% to 74%. This increase in FDI was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman on May 16, 2020.
  • In construction and specified rail infrastructure projects, 100% FDI under the automatic route has been permitted.
  • There is an Investor Facilitation Cell that assists investors from the time of their arrival in India to their departure from the country. This was created in 2014 to give services to investors in all phases such as the pre-investment phase, execution, and also after delivery services.
  • The government has taken steps to improve India’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ rank. India climbed 23 points in the Ease of Doing Business index to 77th place in 2019, becoming the highest-ranked in South Asia in this index.
  • The Shram Suvidha Portal, eBiz portal, etc. have been launched. The eBiz portal offers single-window access to eleven government services connected with starting a business in India.
  • Other permits and licenses required to start a business have also been relaxed. Reforms are being undertaken in areas like property registration, payment of taxes, getting power connection, enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency.
  • Other reforms include licensing process, time-bound clearances for applications of foreign investors, automation of processes for registration with the Employees State Insurance Corporation and the Employees Provident Fund Organization, adoption of best practices by states in granting clearances, decreasing the number of documents for exports, and ensuring compliance through peer evaluation, self-certification, etc.
  • The government hopes to improve physical infrastructure chiefly through the PPP mode of investment. Ports and airports have seen increased investment. Dedicated freight corridors are also being developed.

The government has launched plans to create 5 industrial corridors. They are underway. These corridors are spread across the length and breadth of India, with a strategic focus on inclusive development which will augment industrialization and urbanization in a planned manner. The corridors are:

  • Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
  • Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC)
  • Bengaluru-Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC)
  • Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC)
  • Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC)

Several schemes were launched to support the Make in India programme. These schemes are discussed below:

AGNII or Accelerating Growth of New India’s Innovation was launched to push the innovation ecosystem in the country by connecting people and assisting in commercializing innovations.

Make in India – Objectives

There are several targets aimed by the Make in India mission. They are:

  • Raise in manufacturing sector growth to 12-14% per year.
  • Create 100 million additional jobs in the manufacturing sector by 2022.
  • Increase in the manufacturing sector’s share in the GDP to 25% by 2022.
  • Creating required skill sets among the urban poor and the rural migrants to foster inclusive growth.
  • A rise in the domestic value addition and technological depth in the manufacturing sector.
  • Having an environmentally sustainable growth.
  • Augmenting the global competitiveness of the Indian manufacturing sector.

Make in India – Progress

There have been several milestones attributed to the Make in India scheme. Some of the prominent ones are listed below:

  • The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has eased the tax procedural system for businesses. The GST has been a fillip to the Make in India campaign.
  • Digitization in the country has gained momentum. Taxation, company incorporation, and many other processes have been made online easing the overall process and improving efficiency. This has upped India’s rank in the EoDB index.
  • The new insolvency code namely, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016 integrated all laws and rules relating to insolvency into a single legislation. This has taken the bankruptcy code of India on par with global standards.
  • Due to schemes of financial inclusion such as the PMJDY, as of May 2019, 356 million new bank accounts were opened.
  • FDI liberalization has helped India’s EoDB index to be favourable. Larger FDI inflows will create jobs, income, and investments.
  • Infrastructure and connectivity have received major push-through schemes like Bharatmala and Sagarmala, as well as various railway infrastructure development schemes.
  • BharatNet – this is a telecom infrastructure provider set up by the GOI to enhance digital networks in the rural areas of the country. This is perhaps the world’s largest rural broadband project.
  • India is ranked fourth in the world in terms of its capacity to harness power from winds and ranked number 6 in the world in harnessing solar power. Overall, India is ranked fifth in the world in installed renewable energy capacity.

Make in India – Advantages

The Make in India campaign has had several positive developments for the country. Below are some more benefits that have been derived from this mission.

  • Generating employment opportunities.
  • Increasing the GDP by expanding economic growth.
  • When FDI inflows become more, the rupee will be strengthened.
  • Small manufacturers will get a thrust, particularly when investors from abroad invest in them.
  • When countries invest in India, they will also bring with them the latest technologies in various fields.
  • Due to the various initiatives taken under the Mission, India has moved up the ranks in the EoDB index.
  • Setting up manufacturing centres and factories in rural areas will foster the development of these areas as well.

Make in India – Challenges

Even though the campaign has seen success in some quarters, there have been criticisms as well. There are also many challenges facing the country if she is to achieve the lofty targets set by the establishment. Some of the criticisms are laid out below.

  • India has about 60% of cultivable land. The thrust on manufacturing is said to affect agriculture negatively. It can even cause a permanent disruption of arable land.
  • It is also believed that rapid industrialization (even with the thrust on “going green”) can lead to a depletion of natural resources.
  • A fallout of inviting large-scale FDI is that local farmers and small entrepreneurs may not be able to face the competition from international players.
  • The campaign, with all its focus on manufacturing, can cause pollution and environmental side effects.
  • There are serious lacunae in the physical infrastructure facilities in the country. For the campaign to be successful, it is necessary to build up the infrastructure available in the country and also reduce problems like corruption at the lowest levels. Here, India can take lessons from China, which has dramatically improved its share of global manufacturing from 2.6% in the 1990s to 24.9% in 2013. China rapidly developed its physical infrastructure like railways, roadways, power, airports, etc.

The world wants to Make in India

Decisive leadership, a large market, a young workforce, and a vibrant democracy make india an attractive proposition for investors.

India’s transformation from an economy weakened by a decade of mismanagement under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to a rare, sought-after bright spot in today’s tumultuous world is a result of various effective policies, including the flagship Make in India initiative. It was launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi 10 years ago to reinvigorate job creation and stimulate economic growth.

The Make in India mission has delivered results that make the country a favoured investment destination. As PM Modi said, it is a roaring success that has made India the focus of global attention and curiosity. It has empowered businesses, especially MSMEs, to produce high-quality goods and transformed several sectors from being importers of sub-standard products to exporters of high-quality goods.

An example of this transformation is toy manufacturing, which has seen a 239% jump in exports while imports have halved. This has helped local manufacturers and sellers, and of course, the children, who were earlier exposed to hazardous, low-quality toys that were imported.

India’s journey has been exciting, and the future looks even more promising. The wide array of policies initiated by the Modi government to encourage investments and provide high-quality goods and services is now bearing fruit.

This exciting journey began from a precarious position. The scam-scarred UPA government had inherited a robust economy with strong macroeconomic fundamentals, but it left behind a mess that made citizens anxious and businesses pessimistic. The economy was in a state of disarray, plagued by high inflation, slow growth, an unstable rupee, vulnerable banking system and a neglected manufacturing sector. On top of that, the UPA government faced a series of corruption scandals involving mind-boggling sums of money.

However, after a decade of PM Modi’s visionary leadership, India has maintained manufacturing momentum despite formidable challenges like two wars and the devastating global pandemic. As the PM rightly said, “Make in India initiative illustrates the collective resolve of 140 crore Indians to make our nation a powerhouse of manufacturing and innovation. It’s noteworthy how exports have risen in various sectors, capacities have been built, and thus, the economy has been strengthened.”

In contrast to the UPA era, which was plagued by scandals, the Modi government has overseen a surge of innovation, with the Startup India initiative leading to the creation of about 15 lakh jobs. These startups are not just creating jobs; they are also providing solutions to reduce food wastage, provide better health care, empower women, help farmers, and improve sanitation. The government is also supporting manufacturing through initiatives like the development of 11 industrial corridors and 20 smart cities, attracting investments of ₹ 1.7 lakh crore and generating direct and indirect employment for thousands.

Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are transforming the country’s manufacturing sector. These schemes focus on critical sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and textiles to create ecosystems for sustained growth and ensure global competitiveness. These schemes have attracted ₹ 1.32 lakh crore in investments to significantly boost manufacturing output. More than 8.5 lakh jobs have been created directly and indirectly through this initiative.

India is now recognised as a key partner in high-tech and emerging technologies. Global companies are eager to invest in India, benefiting from the country’s manpower, management expertise, and improved infrastructure, which allows for efficient operations and competitive pricing in the global market.

Modernising infrastructure has been a key priority, with substantial investments leading to the development of modern highways, expressways, and world-class railway stations. India’s infrastructure spending has increased substantially. This year’s Union Budget allocated a record ₹ 11,11,111 crore capital expenditure that will have a multiplier effect on the economy and manufacturing.

Investor confidence in India is growing, with foreign CEOs and industry bodies regularly visiting, eager to participate in India’s growth story. For them, India offers the advantage of four Ds: Decisive leadership, demand from a 140 crore population, demographic dividend of a young workforce, and a vibrant democracy.

To support MSMEs, the government has taken numerous steps to improve the ease of doing business, including eliminating 42,000 compliance requirements and removing criminal penalties for minor offences. India has significantly improved its rank in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business report, rising from 142nd in 2014 to 63rd in 2019.

The Modi government remains committed to improving the ease of doing business, regularly consulting stakeholders to introduce new, innovative reforms. PM Modi is determined to promote investment, support businesses, and secure a bright future for India’s youth. The Make in India initiative is a major step toward achieving these goals.

But did we really ‘Make in India’?

But did we really ‘Make in India’?

On the 10th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ scheme (launched in September 2014), it is time to reflect on whether the scheme achieved the objectives it set out to achieve. Under the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the scheme aimed to boost India’s manufacturing sector to make it globally competitive.

In 1950, the primary sector contributed to 59 per cent of the GDP; by 2011, the tertiary sector contributed to 59 per cent of the GDP. As is evident, India’s economy seemingly skipped the secondary sector.

Economists argued that leapfrogging the secondary sector hindered the country’s economic growth, given its high multiplier effect and the high employment opportunities it generates. As a result, the government has invested heavily in growing the manufacturing sector over the past decade. Most notable of their efforts have been the ‘Make in India’ scheme.

One of the key objectives of the ‘Make in India’ scheme was to increase the share of the manufacturing sector in the GDP to 25 per cent from 16 per cent by 2025 (the target was supposed to be achieved by 2022 but was later revised and extended to 2025). Was this objective achieved?

The manufacturing sector contributed to 16-17 per cent of the GDP in the 1990s. And years later, despite the elaborate and expensive ‘Make in India’ scheme, the sector’s contribution was still stagnant at 17.7 per cent in 2023. This brings into question whether it is even reasonable to expect that we will reach the 25 per cent target by 2025 in just one year.

Since the launch of the scheme nearly 10 years ago, the contribution of manufacturing increased by only 2.7 percentage points. To achieve the remaining 7 per cent in just one year seems highly unlikely. Perhaps we need to be more realistic and revise this timeline — again, for the second time?

Contribution of the Manufacturing Sector to GDP since the Launch of ‘Make in India’

Another key objective of the scheme was to create 100 million new jobs in the manufacturing sector by 2022. This, however, has also not been achieved.

Employment in the manufacturing sector has shown little growth over the past decade. The manufacturing sector employed 30.3 million people in 2013-14, according to the 6th Economic Census. Various sources such as Statista and Business Standard estimate that although employment had increased to 51.3 million in 2017, it decreased to 35.7 million in 2023 and that this decrease, although exacerbated by the pandemic, had started even before 2020.

This showed that an entire decade later, the increase in employment in the manufacturing sector has been infinitesimal. However, government sources claimed that employment is increasing and had reached 62.4 million jobs in 2019. While it is unclear whether employment in the sector has increased or decreased and by how much, what is clear is that the goal of creating 100 million has not been achieved.

Employment in the Manufacturing Sector (in crores)

Even the highly celebrated announcements of multinational corporations, expanding manufacturing operations in India do not create enough jobs to achieve the 100 million new job objective. For instance, the Rs 3,000 crore Coca-Cola investment in Gujarat is expected to generate only 1,400 jobs or Nestle’s Rs 900 crore investment in Odisha is expected to generate over only 800 jobs.

While these investments are certainly crucial, the number of jobs created is not as high as the enthusiasm with which we celebrate the news and nowhere near enough to reach the ten crore new jobs goal.

India is aggressively pushing to establish itself as an electronic and semiconductor manufacturing hub, as seen by the enormous budget allocated to these sectors. In this year’s interim budget, Rs 13,104.5 crore was allocated to electronic and chip manufacturing. The problem with this is that is a capital-intensive, high-skilled manufacturing industry.

For a country like India with a high number of low-skilled labour, investments in labour-intensive manufacturing industries like textile and footwear are needed for the manufacturing sector to generate significant employment and absorb these numbers.

The Union minister for commerce and industry, Piyush Goyal, stressed that “we can create not lakhs but crores of jobs in the textiles sector, plastics, footwear, auto components, sports goods, agri / food processing, there are so many sectors where labour is an important element of cost, that’s our competitive or comparative advantage that we should leverage.”

However, the budget for these industries is much lower. In 2022-23, although Rs 11,059.81 crore was allocated to the Union Ministry of Textiles, the revised budget estimate cut the budget by 71 per cent to Rs 3,579 crore. This concentration of investment in capital-intensive manufacturing has resulted in the sluggish growth of labour-intensive manufacturing.

That is not to say that the scheme did not bring any advancements in the manufacturing sector. Due to governmental intervention, primarily to cut down red-tapes, India’s ranking in the ‘Ease of Doing Business Index’ by the World Bank improved to 63rd in 2020 from 134th in 2014. Furthermore, India’s manufacturing sector has grown in vaccine and electronic production areas.

However, these efforts and achievements fall short when the fundamental indicators of the manufacturing sector show lacklustre growth, and the core objectives of the ‘Make in India’ scheme, even a decade later, are nowhere near being achieved.

  • Team India comprising of center and the states should break the political barriers and support a program of uniform development throughout the country, policy of favoritism should be ruled out.
  • Focus should be on the development of sectors that are seen as drivers of growth in the economy and then pass on the dividends to other sectors.
  • Increased FDI inflows
  • Projected India as an optimal investment destination - UNCTAD World Investment Report (WIR) 2015 ranked India as the third top prospective host economies for 2015-2017
  • Infrastructure development - Development of Industrial Zone, Indsutrial Corridors

  • Creation of jobs has been slow as most investment lies in services sector which require skilled professionals
  • Regulatory and labor reforms are yet to take place which has constricted the space for investment

Changes done in the approval of FDI investments from FIPB towards automatic route in majority of the sectors like retail, pharm, insurance, aviation etc. leaving only a few strategic departments has created a positive scenario among international communities.
  • Technological sector reforms: The government has eased the norms for startup breaking the logjams in registration processes, relaxations in the local content outsourcing for the highly specialized firms like Apple etc.
  • Aviation sector de-regulations: FDI limits in the aviation sector have been increased which has helped in performance and profitability in our domestic airlines. Recent being the selling of stake in our dying state owned airline to international investor arena.
  • Deceleration in world growth: The economy of the major developed economies like USA, Japan, Russia and China has been experiencing low inflation and GDP growth due to which investors have been reluctant to spend rather extravagantly.
  • Wait and watch policies of nations: Major economies like USA has imbibed policies of import restrictions and stricter VISA reforms and IPR policies in order to develop its ailing domestic sectors to help create local employment.
  • Policy actions opposite to Make in India reforms: There have been various actions of the government which inculcates hindrance in the thoughts of Make in India reforms. E.g., major procurements in the defense sector from USA and France, Nuclear agreements for development of reactors with Russia and USA etc. Such actions have lessened the opportunities in growth of indigenous firms.
  • Political instability and state factors: Apart from delaying of reforms in the parliament, there has been a growth in communal tensions in the regions and boundary disputes along our borders. These factors create a negative sentiment among the potential investor nations and their respective governments.
  • Collaborations among domestic venture firms and experienced investing MNC’s in order to reap both the benefits of employment generation and technology sharing.
  • Effective placement and implementation of the taxation and investor reforms like GST, Real estate amendments, Banking regulation reforms, etc.
  • Developments in domestic arbitration laws and faster resolution mechanisms can help in settlement of disputes and hence retaining country’s image as an investment destination

History of Make in India

Make in India is a concept that isn’t new to our country. It had been in practice since the time of the existence of our father of nation Mahatma Gandhi. During the era of revolution, where our entire country was fighting for its freedom from Britishers the same movement was started all over the country initiated by Mahatma Gandhi called as “SWADESHI” movement where he asked our countrymen to boycott can and everything of Britishers and use our own products and goods.

The same Swadeshi was the need of the hour in present situation and hence was brought back in power by our prime minister. Make in India program supports 25 sectors of Economy of our country. The idea behind the “Make in India” program was to make our country self dependent and self reliant. The prime minister refused the idea of importing goods. He wished that we should be independent enough to make and produce enough for ourselves. To make India a self manufacturing hub this idea came into existence and was promoted with great enthusiasm. It also gave job opportunities to various unemployed. The impact of the success of the program could be seen when Indian economy shifted a step ahead at became 5 th largest economy of the world overtaking the economy of France.

Though we have seen Make in India program has been launched yet it hasn’t yet covered all the sectors. A few sectors that had been overtaken by it are:

  • Automobiles
  • Automobile components
  • Construction
  • Biotechnology
  • Defence exports
  • Defence manufacturing
  • Electronic systems
  • Electronic machinery
  • Food processing
  • Oil and gas
  • Entertainment and media
  • Pharmaceuticals etc.

Make in India Vision & Objective

Make in India was also brought in with a vision of development of skills and built up the best and classy infrastructure for our country. The aim was to see India as one of the developed and not as a developing in the near future. Availability of modern and facilitating infrastructure is one of the most important requirements for the development and growth of industry as well as our country. Keeping this in mind Smart cities was to be built to enhance our nation.

What is Smart Cities?

Now arises the question of what a smart city exactly is?

Well there is no standard of a smart city which could be given or understood. It depends on the understanding and perception of the people and varies from city to city and country to country. The only need of a city to be smart is that its people should be willing to change and reform. They should be eager to resort to something that’s better leaving behind their norms and stereotypes. A smart city would be termed as one if it has amazing people with best of understanding, best infrastructure, best management resources, solution to all problems be it medical or relating to pollution, people adhering to network for their work, a digitalized form of anything and everything. An automation of all kinds in a city makes it smart.

Features of smart cities

Some typical features that a government is willing to see in a city to term it as smart are:

  • Smart agriculture- mixed use of land that is useful land could be used for cultivation whereas unused for industry development. Not giving the useful land for development and establishment of industries. Promoting afforestation seeing it as the need of the hour alongside avoiding deforestation.
  • Creation of localities those are walk able- eliminating pollution to the greatest extent possible, reduce congestion, creating parks and open spaces.
  • Governing should become people friendly. People should rely on network for every service provided to them it should as well be cost effective.
  • The plans are to avoid personal cars till we reach 2022 and major part of the population to travel through the cars connecting networks, it being both secure and cost effective.

Smart cities is a smart idea of the government still it has to face a lot of challenges before it gets accomplished in its truest sense. The biggest of which would be our people. The audience needs to shaken out of their revives and need to accept the idea of evolution and redevelopment. To accomplish this program government needs people who actively participate and help accomplish it.

Short Essay on Make in India Campaign

The idea was also supported by a thought of investing in technology. The entire nation is moving towards the technologies like Artificial intelligence and Internet of things. In such scenarios the government needs young and talented mind which would help us upgrade and adapt those changes and government in turn can provide employment to those youngsters. It’s a basic notion of the people to move abroad if they need growth in their career. To remove the same from the minds of the people and helping those growing in their career this idea has been brought in.

The government has introduced the programme “Make in India” with a hope to provide employment to millions of unemployed in India. The programme may play a major role in “domestic creation”. We all know how things in India instead of being made are imported and used at a very high rate. People prefer things imported to things made here in their own country. This preference has been a reason why rate of production in India has decreased over the years.

Best Books for SSC CGL Exam

The programme aims to make India a leading manufacturer in various fields among different countries. The programme not only promises growth in employment but also in the economy of the country. The programme covers almost all the sectors from construction to pottery. One such example was seen during the festival of Diwali when Prime Minister Mr.Modi requested the people of India to give up on China lights that they used to decorate their houses and use Diyas made by the potters. The idea gave an opportunity to the potters to earn.  The other biggest example of swadeshi is Patanjali. Patanjali in India is no more a brand; it’s a symbol of the country. The economic growth of clearly showcases how people have readily accepted the idea of boycotting goods of foreign and resorting to Indian based products. There are hardly a few areas that patanjali hasn’t covered in its product manufacturing among which are automobiles and apparels. The products that patanjali manufactures are:

  • Food (wheat, rice, snacks, noodles etc.)

And it is said in the recent news that it’s going to launch the range of apparels really soon.

Make in India isn’t just a program it’s a dream, dream to make India not less than abroad. But a few things that need to change to begin with are:

  • People should follow traffic rules: if people are able to follow something as small as traffic rules, following even bigger rules would be much easier. Also it would clearly avoid the problem of traffic jams.
  • People need to stop spitting anywhere on the roadsides: this simple step from the people would greatly help the government in its “Swach bharat abhyaan” which is a very much part of “make in India” program.
  • Corruption should be stopped: people blaming the government for corruption should stop right there because that isn’t in the hands of government. It’s them who are the sole owner of this problem. They need to stop heeding to such horrendous requests of officers and not give donations and money for illegal reasons.

Examples of Make in India

Make in India can be seen at various places. Some of the facts pertaining to the same are:

  • According to the news 160 airports are being renovated and operationalized altogether. The Air traffic inhouse has increased by 18% which has lead to an economic growth of 17.5%
  • Exports in aerospace and defence have increased significantly from 298 million USD to 720 million USD.
  • Manufacture all over the country has significantly risen along with the demand for the products that are made inside the country.

  • Develops job opportunities. • Increasing the value of Rupee in the international market. When India would become a hub of manufacturing products it will give a rise to the country’s economy which in turn would automatically strength the Rupee against the dollar that prevails as a master in the international market.
  • Development of India’s rural areas. A development of factory or a industry would surely result in development of the locals of the area. The quality of peoples will enhance along with the growing employment. The area would be well-flourished with basic amenities like schools, hospitals etc.

Disadvantages of Make in India Campaign

But as it is a well-known fact that everything has its pros and cons, to achieve something one needs to loose other things, similarly besides the advantages “Make in India” also has its own disadvantages.

Some of them are:

  • Depletion of natural resources: setting up of industries and factories require a lot of land area due to which cutting down of tress takes place. This leads to depletion of natural resources. There may also be projects which may require water or other natural resources on a very large scale this leads to exploitation of natural resources.
  • Negligence of Agriculture: Agriculture that has been a source of income to million since millions of years would be neglected. Introduction of industries and requirement of land would lead to shortage of cultivable land in India and would have the most negative impact on agriculture.
  • Pollution: the first and foremost problem that needs to be dealt with is pollution. India is already a polluted country and establishment of factories would only result in increase of pollution which would only make India more polluted and a country not worth living. Thus a cure for pollution needs to be found out before taking a step ahead on “make in India” programme.

Essay on Made in India

Essay on Make in India | Mission Objectives, Purpose & Importance

Make in India is a campaign launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014. The goal of the initiative, which was officially announced by the prime minister during his speech at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi is to encourage businesses in India, especially manufacturers, to manufacture or produce their goods and services in the country, as well as boost India’s economy.

Essay on Make in India | Objectives, Purpose, Importance

Essay on Made in India

The government has created a list of products which are in high demand in India. They want these to be manufactured in the country. The Ministry of Commerce has shortlisted 34 different industries.

Objectives of Make in India

The government of India is focusing on ten key areas where they want to encourage investment. They include:

  • Ease of Doing Business
  • Infrastructure
  • Energy and environment

Need of Make in India

India has too much unemployment. There are about 12 million people who enter the job market every year, but there only around 4 million jobs available. The main reason for this is that economic growth does not lead to fast job creation. The Indian government hopes Make in India will change the situation. They think foreign companies will create lots of jobs when they build factories in India.

Working Methods

Make in India is a government driven program. It means the government has created (and will continue to create) policies which they hope will encourage foreign companies to make products in India. The Indian government has already started implementing their policies. For example, they have cut down the number of permissions one must get to start a company in India.

The government has also changed rules for when roads and railways must be used to transport goods. These changes, among others, will allow foreign companies to transport goods from ports to factories faster and cheaper.

Contribution of Make in India Plan

The government expects it to create 25 million new jobs, 16% more than in the year before. This is a huge increase and will help reduce high unemployment in India.

How will Make in India help foreign companies?

The government is focusing on a few areas. They want to make it easier for foreign companies, to get permission to do business in India. They are also making it easier for companies to pay taxes in India.

Make in India will also give foreign companies access to international markets. For example, a foreign smartphone company can sell in India and also in Bangladesh and Nepal which have a combined population of 300 million people!

Benefits of Make in India

Foreign companies will save money . They won’t need to build factories in countries such as China and Bangladesh, where labour costs are higher than in India. While this will benefit foreign companies, it will also benefit Indians. These companies can employ more people and pay them relatively higher wages than many Indians earn now.

The government is hoping that Make in India will grow the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 25%. This means the economy will be larger and have more jobs.

There is lots of interest in Make in India. The Indian government said it has received investment proposals worth about $280 billion since 2014, when the program was announced. The government expects this to increase once they have finished making policies which make it easier for foreign companies. Companies like Fiat Chrysler, Cipla and Airbus have already started working in India . These companies have foreign capital and produce a large number of products for the Indian market.

Make in India (MII) is a government initiative to encourage companies worldwide to manufacture their products in India. The initiative was launched with an aim to build a strong manufacturing sector in India. It aims to transform the country into one of the leading manufacturing destinations across the world.  There are various benefits that MII offers to both the companies and the nations.

Essay on make in india : big boost to industry and employment.

We are providing many paragraphs, long essay in very simple language with the boundaries of different words here.  Here you can find Essay on Make In India : Big Boost to Industry and Employment in English language for students in 1000 words. In this article cover Topic : The background to launch 'Make in India' programme, The programme was a initiative of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), The Public Private Partnership as the hallmark of the programme, The aim of the programme, The 25 key sectors indentified under it, The role played by NSDA. Number of challenges faced by this programme, Same programme launched by China and Results of this programme in Indian industry.

The government will have to encourage high-tech imports, invest in the research and development sector so that its knowledge base can expand. Research and development will go a long way in boosting India's economy. The government neds to motivate the people to contribute their share to the 'Make in India' campaign. It is only with the collaborative efforts of the ,people and government that India can secure the title of a global manufacturing hub.

In 2013, the much hyped emerging market bubble had burst and the growth rate had fallen to its lowest in the decade. The promise of the BRICS nation had faded and India was tagged as one of the 'fragile five'. At that time, India was in a severe economic crisis. The global investors were debating whether the investment in India was an opportunity or a risk The 'Make in India' programme was launched amidst this crisis situation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th September, 2014, with an aim to transform India into a global •design and manufacturing hub.

The initiative was simultaneously launched in all state capitals and in several Indian Embassies. It is a part of a wider set of nation building initiatives and aims to attract the top investors across the world to invest in India The 'Make in India' programme was a result of initiatives of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and is a collaborative effort of different departments and ministries. To begin with, DIPP invited participation from Union ministries, secretaries to the Government of India, State Governments, industry leaders and various knowledge patterns to discuss the severe economic crisis India was going through. This was followed by national level workshops on sector specific industries in December 2014.

These workshops brought secretaries to Government of India and industry leaders together in order to draw for an action plan that aimed at raising the contribution of manufacturing sector to 25% of the GDP by 2020. The resultant plan was presented to the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, industry leaders, and associations. The Public Private Partnership is the hallmark of the 'Make in India' campaign.

'Make in India' programme aimed at a campaign different from the obsolete statistics-laden newspaper advertisements. The logo of the programme is a striding lion made of cogs which symbolise manufacturing, strength and national pride. The programme wanted to infuse confidence among the global investors, citizens and potential investors in India's capabilities. A framework for the vast amount of technical information on 25 sectors of industry was created The government wanted to keep the local and global investor community updated about the latest developments, opportunities and reforms etc via use of social media.

DIPP worked with highly specialised agencies to build new infrastructure which included a help desk and a mobile-first website that packed a wide array of information into a simple and sleek menu. The mobile website ensured that all the details to be furnished to the users were presented in a well-organised pattern on the website. The facts, figures, policies, initiatives and sector-specific contact details related to all the 25 sectors were made available on the website. This effort ensured transparency on•the part of the government. It was aimed to instil public faith in the 'Make in India' initiative.

An eight member team dedicated to handle the investors' queries will be formed. The response time of this team will be 48 hours and it will address all the key issues including labour, skill development and infrascture.

The 25 key sectors identified under the 'Make in India' initiative include automobile, automobile components, aviation, biotechnology, chemicals, construction , defence manufacturing , electrical machinery, electronic systems, food processing, IT and BPM, leather, media and entertainment, mining, . oil and gas, pharmaceuticals , ports and shipping, railways, renewable energy, roads and highways, space, textiles and garments, thermal power, tourism and hospitality, wellness.

Although India boasts of rich natural resources, plenty of skilled labour, it still low on the ease of doing business. The 'Make in India' programme aims at doing away with the delayed regulatory and procedural clearances. The government plans to give time bound clearances to the project through a single online portal. The time bound clearances from all the regulatory authorities will create a conducive environment for the business. Besides, the government is taking into consideration the skill mapping and manpower demand for specific sectors. This will ensure that right kind of training is given to people across the sectors in order to boost their employability.

The National Skill Development Authority (NSDA) is working on creating a Labour Market Information System. This will be helpful for the industry to source its manpower requirement. The validity of the industrial license under the programme will be extended beyond three years. The campaign aims at parting with the archaic laws, which have become synonymous with the country's business enviroD.ment.

The FDI caps will be raised in a controlled manner and the red tape restrictions in the decision-making process will be done away with. The government also intends the develop industrial corridors and smart cities, create world class infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology and high-speed communication. Better infrastructure will give a major push to the 'Make in India' initiative. Industry experts and analysts have given a thumbs up to the 'Make in India' campaign. But there are a number of challenges that the government needs to overcome in order to make this programme a success in real terms. India needs to be ready in real terms to tackle elements that adversely affect the competiveness of manufacturing. Special tax concessions needed to be given to the organisations and countries which are ready to set their establishments within the country. Although this will reduce the government's income earned through taxes, it will contribute a great deal in enhancing the ease of doing businesses in India.

China's 'Made in China' programme was launched the same day when India's 'Make in India' programme was launched. This was done by China to retain its manufacturing prowess.

This means that India's 'Make in India' campaign will be under a constant comparison with China's 'Made in China' campaign. India will have to continuously evolve itself in order to outpace China's supremacy. Besides, the country will have to address the issue of skill deficit by bridging the gap between the theoretical education and practical industry knowledge.

The Government of India celebrated the first 'Make in India' week starting from 13th February, 2016 in Mumbai. The 'Make in India' week was attended by 2500 international and 800 domestic, foreign and government delegations from 68 countries and business teams from 72 countries. Seventeen Indian states have also exhibited their stalls at the Expo. DIPP has announced that it has received 15.2 lakh crore worth of investment commitments and investment inquiries of worth 1.5 lakh crore 30% of the investment commitments and inquiries came from foreign players. Maharashtra state bagged the maximum number of investment commitments worth Rs.8 lakh crores.

According to financial analysts, India's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has increased by 40% since the announcement of the programme. Companies like Xiaomi, Huawei and FOXCONN (manufacturer of i-Phones) are all set to open their manufacturing units in India Lenovo has recently announced that it has started manufacturing of Motorola smart phone in its manufacturing plant in Chennai. Oppo, Fiat, Airbus and Hitachi are some other countries that have actively, showed interest in the 'Make in India' initiative.

Make in India focuses on 25 sectors of the economy like automobile, mining, electronics etc. This emphasis on manufacturing will serve several objectives. First, it will provide employment to more than 10 million people. Second, it will boost foreign direct investment (FDI) thereby bringing development. Third, it will minimise the imports of various products so it will mitigate the pressure on our trade deficit. Fourth, it will augment our exports and lastly, it will help in bringing the latest technologies into the country.

This highly beneficiary programme faces several challenges like prevalent labour laws of India, red-tapism, providing environmental clearance for the big project, low technology and poor transportation system.

The government has taken a number of steps to improve the ease of doing business in the country. Rules and procedures are being simplified single window clearance have been created to guide the first time investors. Besides these, these initiatives must have great linkage with other initiatives of the government like skill India, startup India, digital India etc.

Make in India Essay in English

The “Make in India” campaign was started by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on September 25, 2014 for the recognition of India as a special identity in the field of economy and development of the country. The symbol of this campaign is a lion with many mechanical wheels. Moving with the help of these wheels, this lion displays perseverance and intelligence.

The aim of the Make in India campaign is to promote the development of new technologies in India and to promote products made in India. The biggest principle of Make in India campaign is to encourage foreign companies to invest in India and encourage them to make products in India.

The Make in India campaign will help in the production of many commodities in the country, along with the unprecedented potential of employment, level of property in the country will also be greatly reduced. 25 areas for investment have been selected, under which national and international investors will be to invest.

Due to decreasing employment opportunities in the country, the problem of unemployment has increased in the country. Also, due to the complexity of business and investment, the big investors and businessmen of the country have also been forced to leave the country. In such a way, the Make in India campaign has proved to be a milestone.

Growing production in any country is a symbol of its economic prosperity. If, by that, the country is also able to increase exports, then it will be the happiest place for the economy of that country. Make in India campaign in India is inspired by this. If the investment comes in the country, new factories will be opened in the country, people will get jobs, production will increase, affordable goods will be available and at the same time, India will emerge as a major exporting country.
