DSP MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
DSP is an action comedy film written and directed by Ponram, and produced by Kaarthekeyen Santhanam under the banner Stone Bench Films. The film has Vijay Sethupathi and Anukreethy Vas in the lead roles while Prabhakar, Pugazh, Singam Puli, Ilavarasu and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by D Imman, and the cinematography is handled by Venkatesh S and Dinesh Krishnan.
Vasco Da Gama (Vijay Sethupathi) is the son of a flower seller in Dindigul. He falls in love with Annapoorni (Anukreethy Vas) who runs a sweets and savouries business. On the day of his wedding, he runs into a tiff with local don Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar), which forces him into exile. He returns as a DSP while Mutta Ravi has grown to become the MLA of the constituency. How Vasco Da Gama exacts revenge on Mutta Ravi forms the rest of the plot.
Right from the first frame, DSP is a film that reeks of two things - genericness and cliches. Usually, Ponram's films contain a lot of emotions and thrive on humour and the scenes that show family bonding. DSP is stylishly shot and is technically superior to his previous works, but at what cost? Emotionally, the film doesn't connect anywhere with the audience, and the humour misses the timing more often than not.
The film has plenty of characters, and there are plenty of relationships possible between them. For instance, we are given a lot of scenes between Vasco Da Gama and his father, he has romantic scenes with Annapoorni, there are scenes with his sister, there are scenes with a friend character... and then there is a small romantic track for the sister with his friend. With so many relationships portrayed in the film, you are not able to empathise or root for even a single character among them. The result is that, when a tragic event happens it does not move you even a bit.
It is okay for films to be commercialized or follow specific patterns. But DSP decides to follow the template and never leaves it, and does anything to stay inside it. Vijay Sethupathi gets a slick action block as his opening scene. But the film wants another specific opening song which is preceded by a force-fitted scene that has nothing to do with the film's proceedings. Sample this - Vasco Da Gama randomly goes to a cricket ground to fight with a few players. The village panchayat heads come to question and advise them to leave the ground for the younger generation. Vijay Sethupathi breaks into a monologue, which serves no purpose but a cue for the song "Venam Thalaivaa Advice"
Among performances, Prabhakar looks menacing as the villain Mutta Ravi, and Vijay Sethupathi shines well. In their faceoff scenes, the writing gets marginally better, but still has a lot of flab. A few jokes like Prabhakar imitating Vijay Sethupathi from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Vijay Sethupathi mimicking Prabhakar's Kalakeya character from Baahubali, in between the climax fight does make you laugh. That is the zone DSP should have aimed to hit.
Imman's music and the cinematography provide the basic technical support for the film. Overall, DSP and Vijay Sethupathi deserved much more in the story and screenplay. Without this, the film looks spineless, and wanting for more.

DSP movie review: Vijay Sethupathi’s latest is as generic as it can get
Dsp movie review: vijay sethupathi's collaboration with ponram, who is known for jolly entertainers, has only yielded a bland and middling affair..
A few minutes into DSP, I knew we have all seen this film several times. It is the same old story about a formidable gangster in a small town giving purpose to a directionless protagonist by killing one or two of his beloved friends or family members. Vascodagama (Vijay Sethupathi) is ambitionless like the movie. With his father’s voluntary approval, he wanders around town and has a good time boozing on his uncle’s terrace with friends. Other times, he is seen ragging a neighborhood girl Annapoorni (Anukreethy Vas). It’s alright because she actually enjoys his attention. So, in a way, our villain, Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar) does a favor to the hero by killing his uncle which propels him to become a police officer. That’s why I like villains of such films because they are at least up to something. It’s one thing for the hero to not have a purpose and another for the film. But if it’s going to be just chronicles of this loafer, he better be doing something interesting.
Unfortunately, the film and the hero doesn’t do much till the interval. The conflict arrives only when Vascodagama embarrasses the villain by thrashing him in public. As Mutta Ravi is a formidable force for a middle-class person like our hero, Vascodagama goes into exile only to return as a cop. It’s not a problem if there’s no logic in a commercial entertainer, but here there’s no entertainment as well. The intended comedy sequences draw a blank. There are a few quirks that are interesting like the characterisation of Mutta Ravi for instance. His self-awareness and moral code coupled with an adequate performance from Prabhakar make him a well-rounded character.
On the other hand, Vascodagama doesn’t seem to have a distinguished personality. Like always, Vijay Sethupathi’s presence makes things bearable, but there is no edge to his character. I couldn’t help but compare the film with the actor’s Sethupathi (2016), which was also a cop drama. It was a great example of how a film, despite its generic storyline, can be enjoyable when it has a personality. Sethupathi worked because the protagonist had great character depth and the conflict was well-defined and immediate. In DSP, everything is loosely-written and we don’t invest our emotions. Hence, when the hero takes his revenge, we don’t get that catharsis.
The bigger problem with DSP is it doesn’t warrant the long runtime when Ponram is only repeating himself with some generic stuff like underwhelming songs and comedy sequences. Recently, Hollywood legend James Cameron said it’s okay to take bathroom breaks during his upcoming Avatar 2 as the film is too long. He said, “They can see the scene they missed when they come to see it again.” It applies to DSP as well, because like I said, we have seen this film in the past and we will see it again.

DSP Movie Review: Vijay Sethupathi, Prabhakar anchor Ponram's middling attempt to get back on track
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
When actors and directors with distinct styles collaborate, it is never a perfect balance of worlds. Depending on the stature of either party, the film tends to tilt slightly to one side. Even if director Ponram is in a slump of sorts, the filmmaker has a proven track record with his brand of comedy setpieces. On the other hand, Vijay Sethupathi has an eclectic style that hasn’t yet been perfected for his sojourns as a lead hero in proper masala films. Interestingly, these two worlds collide head on in DSP , and it is almost like both their sensibilities alternate in the narrative. If there is a Vijay Sethupathi-ism thrown in during an important fight, we also have a slapstick Ponram-ism making its way into the same sequence. This oscillation between these two worlds results in a few interesting asides in an otherwise template commercial film.
Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Anukreethy Vas, Ilavarasu, Prabhakar
Director: Ponram
DSP Vascodagama (Vijay Sethupathi) takes on a dreaded Chennai gangster to facilitate a transfer to his home city of Dindigul. Why did he have to do this specific task to get a transfer? We don’t know. Firstly, why is the protagonist named Vascodagama? We don’t know. Also, why does he allow his friends to make fun of a small-built dark-skinned suitor for his sister when she has been rejected by a series of prospective grooms citing her appearance?? We don’t know. Why is a meet-cute between Vascodagama and Annapoorani (Anukreethy Vas) that is both funny and smart soon followed up with straight-up harassment in the name of wooing? We don’t know. There are many more dichotomies in the film that we might not have the answer for, but the film continues to chug along from one scene to another thanks to a strong hero, and an even stronger villain, Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar). The setting up of the conflict isn’t something we haven’t seen before. In fact, some of the pivotal plot points in the film were reminiscent of Vishal films like Sandakozhi or Thimiru. But an effective Vijay Sethupathi and a convincing Prabhakar do their best to drive home DSP to a safe end even if it stumbles and stutters along the way.
The problems in DSP are definitely aplenty, and it starts right from the time Annapoorani is brought into the picture. Even if we first see her as an ambitious woman, she is soon relegated to playing the trope of a feisty village girl. Annapoorani also goes absent for long stretches of time, only to return for a hackneyed sequence with a special cameo. Did I laugh for certain portions in that stretch? Yes. Did it help the film at all? No. Unfortunately, there were more scenes in DSP that elicited similar responses. Entire comedy set-pieces involving a police station and their shenanigans could be construed to be funny, for sure, but they definitely belong to another film altogether.
Glorification of trigger-happy cops notwithstanding, DSP also tries to be a commentary on how many police officers are arm-twisted by the powers that be to do their bidding. While the retaliation by DSP Vasco is anything but novel, brief spurts of ingenuity work in favour of the film. Be it during a chase sequence, or even an interrogation scene, there are certain crowd-pleasing moments injected into the film too keep the film engaging. Another facet that Ponram gets right is definitely the establishment of Vasco’s relationship dynamics. His equation with his father (Ilavarasu), friend (Linga), and friend’s father is beautifully staged. There are very poignant moments involving Vasco and these characters that balance out the cliches of the rest of the film. The same thing holds good with the antagonist’s story too, which is superficially very simple but has a layer or two to pique our interest.
After a rather disappointing outing in his previous film, Ponram manages to get back on track with DSP . It is almost like Vijay Sethupathi’s Sethupathi-styled cop meets the humour levels of a Seema Raja. This might not seem a palatable medley, but it somehow manages to stay afloat as an almost entertaining, but definitely confused film stuck between a template and a good place.

'DSP' review: A revenge drama that fails to impress
The movie is a typical honest cop V/s politician drama devoid of novelty
DSP begins with the introduction of a few cops before we meet Vasco da Gama, played by Vijay Sethupathi. He then introduces the audience to his family in Dindigul, a town in south Tamil Nadu. Vasco da Gama is the obedient son of a flower seller and is in search of a government job. During his job hunt, he comes across ‘Muttai’ Ravi (Prabhakar), the henchman of the local MLA, and locks horns with him. Eventually, Vasco da Gama becomes a cop and returns to his village to take on Ravi. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
DSP is the typical honest cop V/s politician drama which you may have seen several times in the past. Director Ponram does not try to do anything different with DSP . The introduction of Sethupathi as Vasco da Gama did raise expectations, but his character fails to impress as the film unfolds. His romantic scenes with Annapoorni (Anukreethy Vas) are devoid of fun. The character of Annapoorni is uninteresting except in a few comedy scenes when she breaks a beer bottle and when she packs sweets and snacks for the hero.
There are of course a few interesting elements like when Vasco da Gama asks his father, “What if the government sells the organisation I am part of to the private?” Ponram takes a very long time to establish the plot and then the protagonist. By then it is the intermission, and what follows is a cat-and-mouse game between the hero and the villain. Prabhakar's Ravi is the typical villain that you see in Tamil movies and the actor is convincing enough.
The cinematography, editing, and screenplay remind you of many of the old Tamil movies which have the cat-and-mouse game between the hero and the villain as the central plot.
Sethupathi is a crowd-puller who wins the audience with his casual mannerisms and quirky dialogues. In DSP too, Sethupathi does have all these, but fails to impress the audience because of a commonplace plot.
DSP cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Anu Keerthi, Prabhakar, Ilavaraasi
DSP director: Ponram
DSP rating: 2/5
