Computer science personal statement example 5.

Most users see a computer at the front and use the graphical user interfaces. The first time I used a computer, it intrigued me to know how these interfaces work, the theory behind computers and the methodology of how they work. I am a keen to further my Computer Science knowledge.

Studying Computing, ICT and Maths at A-Level has increased my desire to want to know more about this subject.

Furthermore I believe that my two week work experience placement, based in IT support at ARM Holdings, gave me a great insight into how an international Computing business works and confirmed that I wanted to go into computing.

I am familiar with Python, which I have learnt to use for programming and have learnt about the theory behind Stored Program Concept, Fetch-Execute Cycle and also the Internet along with the legal aspects behind Computing.

I have advanced my programing skills using PyQt to develop my own user interfaces and further programming techniques including Object and Event orientated programming.

With this knowledge I feel that my problem solving has developed culminating in my project, which I am currently in the process of completing. I am enjoying the experience of the project, not only with the programming but the process of the project - from the analysis to the testing.

I feel to study Computer Science you would need to be more scientific in your thinking as arguments need supporting evidence before they are proved.

To be a successful student you need to be organised, able to communicate and capable of independent research as an individual to expand your knowledge.

In using my computing A-Level skills, I have gained a significant level of knowledge of how computers work; the theory behind them and also why we need computer scientists in the world of work. It is important to be able to analyse problems and work out solutions, as well as to program the solutions and ensure that if there is a gap in the market you develop these ideas.

Computer scientists' work ensures that current computing programs and processes are maintained and updated if appropriate.

I am always searching for programs or websites to help me with my studies and programs, such as using GitHub as a version control system for my project.

I am currently Chair of the Student Committee at Long Road Sixth Form College; I was elected by the committee to sit on the Board of Governors for the College to represent student views, values and opinions.

I also oversee and plan the entertainments and charitable events, which has given me the opportunity to develop my teamwork and people skills.

I am committed to the charity BeatBullying; which involves taking on the responsibility of Young and Media Ambassador. I also am a mentor for both BeatBullying and its sister charity MindFull helping young people suffering from bullying and mental health issues. This has helped me understand complex personal issues and to further enhance my communication skills.

Since July 2013, I have worked part-time at both Cambridge University Hospitals as a Customer Service Administrator, which has strengthened me as an individual and I had the responsibility of helping others to ensure patient safety and confidentiality.

At Linton Village College I was awarded the Enterprise Honour for being the Manager of the Technical Team and a Student Leader of the Library, which involved organising the day to day running of the Library.

At the same time I was nominated for the Business Studies Linton Honour.

The projects will enable me to draw on all my previous knowledge and experience to enhance at university and further it independently to create a substantial finished product for an external client. I am looking forward to the excitement and challenge that studying science will bring at a higher level.

My future aspirations are to leave the university to enter into the world of work to pursue a career in Computer Science and ultimately, to start my own business in Computer Science.

I am a firm believer that the world will be overtaken by machines in the future. Maybe, we will be able to live the real-life Terminator scenarios. But, the overarching fact is that the world is true, being taken over by the machines and new technologies. Slowly, we have been more and more inclined to depend on technology than we used to. With a good fascination with computers, I was always aware of this as I always wanted to know more about how the technology worked. So, as a self-proclaimed technology enthusiast, I have been studying Computer Science at the college.

I was never sure what I was going to do after completing my degree and had to research about the job opportunities I would supposedly get after finishing my studies. After making a long list of job options, I was pretty sure that every one of them was as complicated as the job title they had. I will tell you, it was 2 years ago that I made the list, but now it is clear to me that it is as hard to complete the degree in the first place. So, I can imagine that the work I must put up with the jobs ranging from an IT manager to web designer will be hectic. However, there are so many things you could do with the degree that I am still not sure what kind of job I will be doing 10 years from now.

It is believed that technical skills will be high on demand in the near future. The ability to manage and discern a massive amount of data will be of high value. Software related jobs will grow by 18.8% in 2024. But it is just the tip of the iceberg. With the rise of machines and technological advancement in the work field; it is evident that the rise of jobs relating to the servicing, repairing, programming, and other software and hardware related jobs will be on the rise. It has been estimated that about 5 million jobs will be lost to automation by 2020. Therefore, I am convinced that with the background of Computer Science. I will be doing a boring job like programming software for an application or a machine for different companies. But the most fun thing I could be doing 10 years from now would be developing games. Gaming is also one of the rising industry and programming games, for me, has a nice ring to it. To my dismay, being a game developer is harder than it sounds and as the gaming industry is still evolving; they are trying to make genres that are more appealing to the buyers which make the future it holds for game dev, ambiguous.

Being a programmer is hard, and you must be a quick learner to understand what has gotten into while studying Computer Science. This holds true even after you finish your studies, as the programming languages being used for applications and software are always being updated; and you never know when a better programming language pops up out of nowhere and you have to learn it from the scratch. This is one of the never-ending battles a programmer must face. To my dismay, it is very possible that many new programming languages will rise up and I will have to learn the languages from the very start just to keep my job. This is a very evident scenario and it is possible that computer scientists will have to learn new languages throughout their lives just to keep their job.

With some astounding space exploration companies coming to surface, it is evident that computer science has offered many avenues in the field of space exploration too. By applying robotics and software enterprise, computer engineers have been building robots, gadgets, and spaceships to help explore the space. In the near future, space exploration may turn out to be a norm and it is very possible that a surge of increase in demand for computer programmers will be created. Developing software and application for space programs could be a possible job for me after all.

No one can precisely foretell the future. 2025 A.D. could be the year that the world will end, you never know. As far as I know, my job, as a computer scientist can very sure be writing codes; a lot of codes for businesses, managing websites, programming and maintaining automation, accidentally building a killer defense system AI that will try to annihilate humans. I cannot predict what I will be doing then but I can surely tell that it will be very hard to get and keep a job by then. The competition has been rising and every passing day, it is getting harder and harder for people to get a job that they were hoping to get from their degree. The rise in computer-automated “workers” doesn’t help either, as it is helping considerably to increase the numbers of jobless bums. In the year 2025, maybe you won’t have to work, and the government will give you a steady amount of money; who knows? But, what If by 2025 there will be machines and robots built, that can repair and update themselves rendering the need of programmers and repairmen obsolete? With the rise in technological advancement, in the near future, this can hold true. Although it might take more than 20 years of technological advancement for that to happen, people might find themselves jobless because of the rise of automated machines in job culture. If these kinds of events unfold and I was to be jobless, I always imagined I would be a beet farmer.

College Essay Tips for Software Engineering Programs

This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Hale Jaeger in a CollegeVine livestream. You can watch the full livestream for more info.

What’s Covered:

“why this . . .” essays for software engineering, writing your essay.

For many college applications, you’ll write essays in addition to the Common App personal statement . These prompts will often ask you about what you’re planning on pursuing at the college. This article will give you practical advice for explaining your interest in software engineering.

Many supplemental essay prompts are quite common, such as “ Why this major? ” and “ Why this school? ” If you’re sure about pursuing software engineering and know which college you want to kick off your career at, you should already know the answers to these questions.

Certain schools have strong software engineering and computer science programs. If this is the case for your chosen college, it should be easy for you to say that you can identify with their program. You can add that you’re excited to use the specific resources there and how they will help you reach your goal of becoming a software engineer.

When talking about your major, bring up what attracts you to the field. Your eventual salary and career prospects are incentives, but you want to explain what specifically about the study of computer science and engineering makes you excited. Why do you like to learn about it? Maybe you’re fascinated by the inner workings of technology. Perhaps you’re interested in how specific tools on certain websites work. It’s also possible that you want to improve user experience and innovate existing software.

These reasons are a bit less shallow than money. They also get to the heart of why you want to pursue software engineering: you like to build things and solve problems.

From Abstract to Specific

In general, when writing your essays, you should work on funneling these types of ideas about your major from the abstract to the specific. You can open with a particular anecdote or story to catch the reader’s attention, of course, but try to start with high-level interests. Fundamental things like identifying the inner workings of a website can lead to more niche topics.

Personal Experiences

When writing your essays, make sure you touch on any personal experiences that can help show why this subject is your passion. It can all add to the personal narrative that you’ve been building in your entire application and help make the admissions officers understand you better.

If you had an experience with technology that fascinated you, drew you into the subject, and made you want to learn more, then include that. Be sure to add the important details so the reader can get a good sense of the scene. Another way to go is if you had the opposite experience: you encountered a frustrating piece of technology and were desperate to figure out how to get it working. You realized that you wanted to go into the field to improve software and make people’s lives easier. You can try writing about your interests that way.

Another way to write your essay is to back up an explanation of your passions with a personal story that will make your essay compelling. Try to draw on an anecdote, and if possible, explain what you’ve accomplished after your initial interest was sparked.

How did you get involved in coding? If you found technology that was glitching all the time or something that excited you, did this inspire you to figure out how it all worked? Write about how you’ve developed your skills in coding and science and how much you’ve learned about good systems and malfunctioning systems. Then, write about what you want to accomplish and innovate in the field.

Plans for the Future

When you’ve discussed the past and present, you can begin to probe the future. For the sake of narrative, try to include how you’ve grown and what your ultimate ambitions are. If you’re not sure exactly what branch of software engineering you want to go into, that’s fine. You can name a few options, such as game design or mobile design, or you can just talk about how you want to build things and make better technology to improve people’s lives.

When you’re talking about personal things, you should aim to be specific. Draw on stories when you can, and be honest about what interests you about this subject and what you want to do in the field. This is your chance to explore why you’re looking to go into software engineering, so you should come away from these essays feeling much more confident about your planned course of study.
