Case Competition Team Names

How To Choose A Good Case Competition Team Name

1. reflect your values.

Consider what your team stands for and try to convey that in the name. If your team prides itself on creativity, think of a name that shows that off. For example, “The Innovators” or “Creative Pioneers” puts the focus on your team’s inventive nature. The name you choose tells others what you’re all about, so choose something that represents your core values.

If your team is all about speed and efficiency, a name like “The Swift Solvers” could do the trick. It’s a clear signal to competitors that you’re fast thinkers and won’t waste time getting to the heart of a case.

2. Keep It Memorable

A catchy name will stick in people’s minds. If your team name is easy to remember, it’ll be easier for everyone to recall your performance and for your name to come up in casual conversations. Think “The Brainy Bunch” or “Case Crusaders” — these names have a ring to them and create a strong impression.

But remember, a memorable name shouldn’t be complicated. “Quizzical Questers” might be a mouthful, even if it’s catchy. Aim for simplicity with a twist; that’s the sweet spot for memorability.

3. Short and Sweet

Long names can be a turnoff. They’re hard to remember and can be confusing. Stick to something short, with no more than three or four words. “The Analysts” is simple and to the point, whereas “The Super Intelligent Case Solving Squad” might be overdoing it.

In the world of case competitions, time is of the essence, not just for solving cases but also for making a lasting impression. A succinct name like “Data Drivers” can pack a punch in just two words.

4. Easy to Pronounce

If people struggle to say your team’s name, they’ll likely struggle to remember it. Say the names out loud to see how they roll off the tongue. A name like “EcoMinders” is smooth and highlights a focus on sustainability without the tongue-twisting.

Imagine your team name being announced in a crowded room – if there’s any chance it could be butchered or misunderstood, it might need tweaking. “Numeral Ninjas” is straightforward and leaves no room for mispronunciation.

5. Be Professional

While fun names are great, you also want to choose something that sounds professional and respectable. Steer clear of names that might be deemed childish or inappropriate. “The Executives” exudes professionalism, while “The Lazy Logicians” does not give off a serious vibe.

Remember that you might be putting this name on your resume or talking about it in job interviews. It’s important that the name stands the test of future professional scrutiny. “Market Mavericks” strikes a good balance between fun and professionalism.

6. Avoid Inside Jokes

An inside joke might be funny to your team, but to everyone else, it’s just confusing. A name that’s too personal or cryptic, such as “The 4th Floor Funnies,” may not resonate with judges or other competitors who don’t have the context.

A good team name should have a universal appeal that doesn’t exclude those on the outside. “The Strategists” is universally understood and leaves no room for confusion.

7. Use Word Play Wisely

A pun or wordplay can make your team name stand out, as long as it relates to the competition or your team’s strategy. “Cash Flow Pros” is an excellent example if you’re dealing with finance cases, offering a witty twist while keeping the name relevant.

Remember not to force puns, as they can become cringeworthy or overly complex. Your pun should flow naturally, making sense within the context of a case competition.

8. Avoid Overused Words

Words like “elite,” “synergy,” and “brainstormers” are overdone in the corporate world. Be creative and aim for less common terms. “The Concept Crew” or “Paradigm Pioneers” offer a fresh twist on the usual vocabulary.

You want your team name to stand out, not blend into a sea of clichés. Choosing less common words can help to give your team an edgier and more distinct identity.

9. Consider Your Audience

Know who will be hearing or seeing your team name. If it’s a competition with a focus on technology, a name like “The Code Crunchers” might be right on target. It directly speaks to tech-savvy judges and competitors.

Always tailor the team name to resonate with the specific audience of your case competition. If it’s a general business competition, broader names like “The Enterprise Enthusiasts” could work better.

10. Research Existing Names

Do a bit of research to ensure that your name is unique. Google it, check social media, and look at past competition winners. If you choose a name like “Analytical Avengers,” and it’s already in use, it could cause confusion or even legal issues.

The last thing you want is to face a trademark issue with another team, so be sure your chosen name hasn’t been trademarked by another group.

11. Think Long-term

Opt for a name that could endure beyond just one competition. If your team decides to stick together for future cases, a name like “Winning Wave 2024” would quickly become outdated. Instead, something timeless like “The Resolute Researchers” would still work years from now.

The name should not only reflect the current competition but also leave room for the team’s growth and evolution in the field.

12. Get Team Input

Lastly, make sure everyone on the team has a say. Collective brainstorming can lead to more ideas and a name that everyone feels connected to. You might run a survey or hold a vote to pick the best suggestion.

The chosen name should generate a sense of pride and belonging for the entire team. After all, it’s a title that will represent each member’s efforts and achievements.

What are some key factors to consider when choosing a name for a case competition team?

Choosing a name for a case competition team requires consideration of several key factors. It is important that the team name reflects the group’s spirit, strengths, and analytical skills. The name should be catchy, memorable, and to some extent, give insight into the team’s strategy or intensity.

Simplicity is also vital, as a shorter, punchier name is more likely to stick in people’s minds versus a long or complex one. Additionally, ensure the team name is appropriate and aligns with the competition’s guidelines and audience expectations.

How can a case competition team name contribute to the team’s identity?

A case competition team’s name is often the first impression that judges and competitors have of the team itself. It can set the team’s tone, indicate a level of professionalism or creativity, and help in building a cohesive identity that the team can rally behind.

A well-chosen name can also instill confidence within the team and project an image of unity and competence to those evaluating the team’s performance.

What are some creative approaches to naming a case competition team?

Creative approaches to naming a case competition team can include puns relating to the industry or the nature of case competitions, wordplay incorporating business terminology, or acronyms that spell out values or traits the team stands for.

Another tactic is to choose a name that reflects a theme, such as a historical figure known for strategic intelligence, or an innovative concept tied to the industry the case study is based on.

Can the name of a case competition team impact its performance or perception by judges?

The name of a case competition team can have an impact on how judges perceive the team, even though the main evaluation is based on the quality of their analysis and presentation.

A name that is professional, creative, and relevant can make a team stand out and be more memorable. However, it is ultimately the substance and depth of the case resolution that will drive performance judgment.

Are there any resources or strategies available to help brainstorm case competition team names?

To brainstorm case competition team names, it’s helpful to use online name generators for initial ideas, look at the names of past winning teams for inspiration, or conduct a brainstorming session with your team to tap into collective creativity.

Team members might consider what makes their team unique, any inside jokes, or relevant industry terms. Using mind maps or association techniques can also help in recognizing patterns or themes that resonate with the team’s identity.

In conclusion, selecting a case competition team name is more than just a creative exercise; it’s an opportunity to define and distinguish your group.

Prioritize clarity, relevance, and appeal in your choice. Ensure the name resonates with your values, is easy to remember, and sounds professional.

By involving the entire team in the decision-making process and doing thorough research to ensure originality, you’ll end up with a name that’s not only unique but also capable of carrying your team’s legacy in competitions to come.

With the right name, your team can confidently make its mark in the case competition circuit.

Understanding Your Team and Competition

Before you name your team, know your team.

Are you a band of weekend warriors dominating local soccer leagues? Or perhaps a group of coding ninjas set to conquer hackathons? The context is crucial.

A name that wows in an esports tournament might not resonate in a corporate challenge.

Tap into your team’s vibe. Are you the underdogs, the seasoned pros, or the wildcard entrants?

Your name should embody your essence, your mission. And don’t forget to scope out the competition.

Stand out, don’t blend in. Avoid names too close to rivals, or you risk being the echo, not the voice.

Brainstorming Techniques

Let’s get those creative juices flowing! Brainstorming is your secret weapon, your path to that one name that clicks. Try these techniques:

  • Wordplay Wonders : Puns, rhymes, and alliterations make names catchy. Think “Swift Scribblers” or “Buzzer Beaters.”
  • Personal Touch : Incorporate team member names or quirks. “Jenny’s Juggernauts” has a ring to it, right?
  • Cultural Cues : Inside jokes or competition-specific references can be gold. “The Java Jugglers” for a programming face-off, anyone?

300 Cool Hackathon Team Names That’ll Get You Noticed In 2022

Hackathons have become increasingly popular in the tech industry. You may be wondering why this is and what they can offer your team. Hackathons are a great way to get teams working on something new, innovative, or creative for a set amount of time with some type of reward at the end. This challenge-driven approach often leads to an abundance of ideas that could otherwise not have been thought up without this incentive.

Of course, the hackathon competition itself is great and all, but have you ever paid attention to the hackathon team names? They are typically creative and unique, leaving almost everyone wondering, "who are they and how did they come up with that?"

The most memorable names feature inside jokes, technological puns, and pop culture references. Something like "Code of Duty". Many of us know where it comes from, and we know what it means. But that doesn't make it any less creative.

We also know better than to judge anything by its cover, but if I came across two teams, one with a creative name like "Code of Duty" or "Trojan Horses", and the other with a low-effort name like "Great Achievers", I would look up to see who the creatives behind the first name are – and I would expect them to perform much better.

Even though the goal of hackathon events is to bring the tech community together to showcase their skills, connect, and collaborate with and learn from other participants, there is still an innovative and competitive spirit. So you need the right name for your team to stand out.

Organizing A Hackathon And Looking For The Right Name?

There are many advantages to organizing a hackathon. They include shorter innovation cycles, reduced risk of product development, finding excellent talent, and increased employee engagement among others. In order to enjoy these advantages, you need to carefully decide all aspects of the hackathon to avoid preventable errors.

One such aspect that you should carefully look into is the name of the hackathon. The name you choose should match the purpose, outline the nature of it, and set the tone for the entire duration of the hackathon.

The following few steps will help you come up with the right name for your hackathon.

  • Decide the reason for organizing the hackathon.
  • Define the problem statement - what you are trying to solve or what opportunities you are trying to explore.
  • Set the theme - determine the exact theme that you want the participants to work with based on the problem you are trying to solve and why.

If you are wondering how to organize a hackathon , or are struggling with any aspect(s) such as the right name for it, just reach out and we will help you and your organization reap all the benefits of a well organized hackathon.

5 Tips On How To Brainstorm Cool Hackathon Team Names

In order to come up with a good name, you need input from all team members. Not only will this ensure that each of you is happy with the name settled upon, but it also makes sure that you pick the overall best from the individual selections.

Although throwing around names is fine for an okay name. If you want an amazing name, you need to use a step-by-step approach as follows.

Step 1: Come Up with Team Names

Each member of your team is tasked with coming up with 5 of the best team names they can come up with. Each of these names should come from a list of 5 topics such as cool, catchy, unique, funny, and cute. There should be no more rules to this, and everyone can be as creative as they can be. In this way, you will end up with a huge number of personalized team names.

Step 2: Create a List of the Best Team Names

From each of the five topics, select two of the best and create a list. In this five-member-team example, the list will contain 10 names. While filtering out the rest, here are a few things you need to keep in mind.

  • It should be simple to read and pronounce
  • Make it memorable
  • It should be unique
  • Should be meaningful
  • It should be short.
  • Avoid abusive names

In addition to the above, an ideal name should represent a common theme. If you have anything in common amongst yourselves, you can find a way to incorporate it in the team name. For instance, all of you are beginners, or veterans, all females, or all males.

Lastly, your team name should convey the purpose of the team. This means that the names you set aside should clearly describe what your team is all about. It is not as difficult as it sounds. You only need to put together one descriptive noun or adjective with a word that is related to the hackathon. For example, Data Dudes.

Step 3: Do a Majority Count

Once you have agreed on which category you want your team name to be, select it from the 10-name list. This means you have two names, which you need to do a majority count. Once you do this, you will arrive at a name that each of the group members can agree with.

Step 4: Get Feedback

Once you have your name, you can ask your friends and family what they think of it. If you have negative feedback, you can backtrack and use one of the alternatives that you filtered out in its place. If they honestly agree on its brilliance, you can rest assured that you will get noticed in the up-and-coming hackathon.

Step 5: Make Sure Everyone on the Team is On Board

If there is even a single person in the team that is not satisfied with the choice that everyone has agreed on, it could be detrimental to the morale and even performance of the team.

If that is the case, the group leader needs to carefully explain why they made that choice and how the others pale in comparison to it. If the need arises, they could come up with an entirely new name that everyone will agree on.

Other tips that will help you come up with a good name include:

- Using a creative reference such as a movie, book, or music character or lyric will make your team stand out. It doesn't have to be related to technology, although you can add a descriptive noun to personalize it.

- To sound even more unique, you could decide to instead use an obscure technology-related term. Using a name that most people don't understand will not only set an air of uniqueness and mysticism around your team, it will also give other participants a chance to learn a new word as well.

- Check the acronym of your name to make sure it does not pronounce or spell something offensive or a swear word.

- The name shouldn't be the name of a domain or trademarked, or the name of either of the group member's social media handles.

Table of Contents

The Importance of Trivia Games in an Organization

In the modern workplace, where teamwork, collaboration, and employee engagement are paramount, incorporating trivia games can offer numerous benefits beyond just entertainment.

Trivia games might seem like mere diversions, but they can serve as powerful tools for fostering a positive and productive work environment. Let’s delve into why trivia games are important in an organization:

Knowledge Enhancement

Trivia games provide an engaging platform for employees to expand their knowledge base. The questions cover a wide array of topics, ranging from history and pop culture to science and current events. Encouraging employees to participate in trivia games can expose them to information they might not come across during their regular work tasks. This continuous learning can contribute to their personal and professional growth.

Team Building

“Nearly 75% of employees see teamwork and collaboration as essential.” – Source

Team cohesion is essential for a well-functioning organization. Trivia games encourage employees to collaborate, communicate, and work together in a non-stressful setting. By forming teams and brainstorming answers collectively, employees learn to appreciate each other’s strengths and develop a sense of camaraderie that transcends the confines of their job roles.

Stress Relief

Work-related stress is a common challenge in many organizations. Trivia games offer a brief respite from the pressures of daily tasks. Engaging in a lighthearted and enjoyable activity can significantly reduce stress levels and help employees recharge, ultimately boosting their overall well-being and productivity . And giving team names for games can enhance the entire experience.

Cognitive Stimulation

Trivia games stimulate critical thinking, problem-solving, and quick decision-making. The rapid-fire nature of answering trivia questions under a time constraint hones employees’ cognitive abilities, which can positively influence their performance in complex work scenarios that require quick thinking.

Icebreaking and Networking

For new employees or in situations where diverse teams collaborate, trivia games can serve as icebreakers. Participating in such games helps individuals break down initial barriers, initiate conversations, and establish connections. As employees get to know each other’s personalities and interests, collaboration becomes more seamless.

Celebration and Recognition

Organizations often hold trivia game sessions during celebrations, team-building events , or employee recognition gatherings. Trivia games offer an entertaining way to celebrate milestones, achievements, or special occasions. This recognition creates a sense of belonging and motivation among employees, enhancing their loyalty to the organization.

Now that the theoretical part is done, let’s move on to the fun part with some funny team names.

Wharton Stories

How these wharton undergrads won the “world championship” of case competitions.

Competing against 11 of the strongest undergraduate case competition winners across the globe, a team of four Wharton seniors came out on top at the 2018 Champions Trophy Case Competition in Auckland, New Zealand.

Case competitions give business students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they’re learning in the classroom to real-world industry challenges. Last month, four Wharton seniors had the chance to do that at the highest level and won.

Ellen Naruse , W’18, Brandy Sun , W’18, Joseph Robillard , W’18, and Brandon Saw , W’18, earned the top spot at the 2018 Champions Trophy Case Competition . Founded in 2008 and hosted by the University of Auckland in New Zealand, Champions Trophy is a four-day case competition open only to winners of other global case competitions.

“It’s the best of the best, and it’s regarded by a lot of people as the world championship,” said Prof. Keith Niedermeier , the team’s mentor and Director of the Undergraduate Marketing Program.

After Wharton won the Sauder Summit Global Case Competition at the University of British Columbia in 2017, the School was invited to compete in Auckland — as one of just two teams from the U.S.

During the contest, undergraduate students from around the world spend several days formulating innovative business solutions for four different companies: a nonprofit, a small-and medium-sized enterprise, a public limited company, and a software company. These real-world case studies are designed to highlight some of the strategic challenges and managerial dilemmas that global business leaders face working in a fast-paced environment.

And the students have to face these challenges without the help of computers or other electronics — each team is only given access to two scientific calculators. “They couldn’t even make PowerPoint slides. So they had to do financials with a calculator, and they had to rely only on their knowledge base,” explained Niedermeier.

This technological restriction was an interesting challenge for the team. “It was definitely a learning curve,” Joseph said. “We had to be confident in things that we had no data to back up whatsoever. You couldn’t go up there, give a recommendation, and fall back on it in the ‘Q and A’ section. You really had to be gung ho confident and think things out carefully.”

Time restrictions placed on teams made the competition even harder. “Because we were in such a time crunch — we only had five hours for the whole thing — it was important that we stick to what we decided and move forward, but at the same time remain very flexible,” Brandy said.

How the Team Became Trophy Champions

Becoming the “champion of champions” wasn’t easy. Niedermeier, who selects and mentors all teams for international case competitions, said that 25 candidate teams auditioned to attend one of four international case competitions. The selected teams went through a rigorous training process.

“We actually run mock case competitions as practice — the team creates the solutions, and presents them to other students and me. We push them, we practice Q&A, and I give them a lot of harsh feedback,” he explained.

Prof. Keith Niedermeier meeting with his case team at the competition.

Dubbed by her teammates as the resident “finance whiz”, Brandy was a first-time case competitor. She credits some of her success to classes she took at Wharton. “Our last case was actually a sports case. I took a Sports Business Management class that just happened to be relevant,” she said. “Marketing 101 also provided us with a lot of basic fundamentals and frameworks from which to approach a problem.”

Other team members a much earlier start in the case competition world. Ellen’s triumph has been a long time coming. “Sophomore year, when Joseph and I met in our business fraternity, we tried a random case competition and it did not go well,” she admitted, but it piqued her interest. “I was weirdly intrigued by the process of doing a case competition.”

Joseph, Brandon, and Ellen joined Penn MUSE (Marketing Undergraduate Student Establishment), the 2016 Platinum chapter of the American Marketing Association at the University of Pennsylvania. “That’s where I learned the majority of what we use now,” he said.

Ellen agreed. “We have this storyline that works — we set up the objectives and key insights from the given case background and then strategize for the company’s position. We tend to use this structure a lot, just adjusting it for each case’s specific context,” she said. “So, outside the classroom, club practice helped us gain a lot of experience.”

A Winning Strategy

The team organized itself into two pairs for each case they analyzed and presented. Joseph and Ellen presented the situational analysis and strategy, then handed it off to Brandon and Brandy to address tactics, execution, and impact.

One of the team’s secrets to success was their “opportunistic” way of handling the Q and A section. “We chose the tactics that were most feasible and most impactful, but at the same time we acknowledged that there were other options — they just weren’t the best,” said Ellen.

A sheet from one of the slide decks the team put together.

Joseph added, “Professor Niedermeier calls it ‘inoculating the judges to other people’s solutions,’ because you also want to think about what other teams could potentially pitch as more low-hanging-fruit tactics.”

The team used their individual strengths and positive group dynamic to devise a time-efficient approach. They had a good understanding of how much time they needed to read the case, discuss it, and build their slide deck. “Joseph, Brandon, and I have worked on several case competitions together, so we really understood our strengths, and obviously, Brandy fit super well into that picture,” Ellen said. “In New Zealand, we didn’t waste any time — we knew our roles, we set an agenda, and that made us really efficient.”

In particular, they emphasized that their personal relationships were just as important as their professionalism. “It can be a very high-pressure environment, but we didn’t let our personal feelings get in the way of voicing concerns or disagreeing,” Ellen explained. “When we got out of the room, we’d laugh about the stress we’d been through, and we would be absolutely fine.”

The team’s skill and cohesion were evident to others at the competition as well. In addition to winning the Champions Trophy, Brandy, Brandon, Ellen, and Joseph were also named the ‘People’s Choice’ by other advisors, participants, and attendees.

“This is the first time I have seen both awards go to the same team at this competition, largely because the level of competition is so high,” Niedermeier said. “They were incredibly diligent in their preparation and consistently excellent across four days of competition.”

Selecting the Case Competition

The strategy, in my opinion, to participate in case competitions should be based on what is the domain of the challenge, which firm is organizing it, how many slides/video submission is required at different stages, what is the prize money/ PPI offerings on clearing different rounds, how many teams are going to be shortlisted at campus / national level, etc.

These factors become important because there are numerous case competitions that will come your way and it may not be possible to attempt all of them. Clearly, you would want to put your efforts into the ones where your interests lie and where the chances of success are high.

Wish you all the best in your journey of cracking the case competitions!

Metrics details

The Midwest Healthcare Case Competition lets graduate trainees gain practical experience and exposure to alternative careers in a condensed time frame without taking away from research commitments.

You have full access to this article via your institution.

Graduate trainees in biomedical fields (and more broadly STEM fields) are increasingly dissatisfied with their educational experience and question their degree’s worth 1 , 2 , 3 , in part due to limited numbers of available tenure-track positions 4 , 5 . This is evidenced by a nearly 20-point decline in academic job placements within 1 year after graduation over the past 30 years (from 41.4% in 1992 to 22.4% in 2022), which was coupled with a surge in STEM doctorates awarded over much of that period (exemplified by an increase of 47% from 2004 to 2014) 4 , 6 , 7 , 8 . Beyond limited faculty opportunities, graduate trainees have also cited the poor funding landscape and strained work-life balance as key reasons for dissatisfaction 2 , 3 , 9 . Consequently, more graduate trainees are being driven to pursue alternative and non-academic career opportunities. Although graduate training hones technical skills for academia, less than one-third of Nature ’s 2022 graduate trainee survey respondents felt that they were gaining sufficient transferable skills, including management of people and finances and business plan development, to successfully pursue their chosen careers, academic or otherwise 2 , 10 . Such transferable skills and exposure to non-academic roles are paramount to improving the graduate trainee experience and eventually supporting career placement 11 .

To bridge these skill gaps, many trainees are charting their own career development paths by partnering with non-academic entities and co-creating experiences aimed at cultivating marketable skills 10 . Select examples of such activities include case/pitch competitions, hackathons, self-designed industry internships and entrepreneurship/start-up involvement. To this end, 2 years in a row, in 2022 and 2023, we (a group of biomedical graduate trainees) envisioned and successfully hosted a global, virtual, biomedical- and healthcare-oriented case competition geared toward graduate trainees (titled the Midwest Healthcare Case Competition, MHCC). Through partnership with life sciences consulting firms and large pharmaceutical companies, the goals of MHCC were to foster innovative thinking and collaboration amongst trainees and the broader biomedical community. To achieve these goals, we sought to boost graduate trainees’ business acumen, provide opportunities to explore alternative career paths and offer networking with target industry firms that represent attractive career placements. MHCC has since become an annual event and is entering its third year in 2024.

Here, we describe our strategies for organizing and implementing a virtual case competition from the idea-inception phase through the live event while also highlighting its successes and impact from both a trainee and broader biomedical community standpoint. We aim for this approach to serve as a playbook and model for other graduate trainee groups to follow and ultimately expand offerings to further their own professional development journeys.

Ideation phase

Mission and operating principles.

The mission of MHCC was to equip graduate trainees with complementary skills to those developed in the research setting in a short time frame, as well as to empower trainees to take command of their professional development and career exploration efforts. We were inspired by the case competition model prevalent in business school environments for several decades 12 , which engages students in team-based sprint challenges to solve a business problem. Not only does the opportunity offer business school students practical experience in a short time frame, it also maximizes potential return on investment through connections with company sponsors. Unlike lengthy internships, which are inaccessible to a wide portion of biomedical graduate students 2 , a brief week-long case competition offers accessibility without greatly disrupting academic activities.

Our operating principles included being inclusive to those with little to no case competition or business experience, a virtual format to enhance accessibility and a focus on healthcare. With the proliferation of virtual events in recent years, MHCC was held in an entirely virtual format, allowing cross-institutional team formation and global participation. Moreover, in appealing directly to biomedical graduate trainees, MHCC focused on healthcare topics to emphasize the wide-ranging applicability of biomedical graduate training in healthcare business settings. In line with our operating principles, we specifically designed a user-friendly website, hosted information sessions to educate potential applicants on case competitions and facilitated team building across students from a broad geographical range. Additionally, we featured several healthcare-focused keynote talks from senior leaders at sponsoring companies and a networking session with judges and keynote speakers to enrich the participant experience.

Organizing team

We, the organizing team, are biomedical graduate trainees from three Midwestern universities in the United States: the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (UM), Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) and the University of Wisconsin in Madison (UW). Concurrent with our graduate education, we are members of three graduate trainee-run consulting groups at our respective universities: the miLEAD Consulting Group ( https://www.milead.org ), The BALSA Group ( https://www.balsa.org ) and the WiSolve Consulting Group ( https://www.wisolve.org ). These three groups have similar activities, mainly (i) to provide high-quality, affordable business consulting services to companies located within their respective communities and (ii) to serve as a professional development opportunity for graduate-level trainees to enhance career prospects in non-academic job markets 10 , 13 . As a natural extension to our commitment to professional development activities listed in (ii), the three groups came together in 2022 to drive the planning and execution of MHCC.

Event design

Logistics and structure.

The main event of MHCC in both 2022 and 2023 consisted of three primary stages: the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (Fig. 1 ). Note that this description of the main event does not include details of 7 months of preparation by the organizing team beforehand, which is described later in this article. In 2022, the quarterfinalist teams were chosen based on an initial resume and cover letter scoring rubric that evaluated leadership, entrepreneurial drive, motivation for solving healthcare challenges, team dynamics and presentation skills. In 2023, the assessment rubric was refined to reflect our dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I). Through this change, we deliberately expanded the scope of trainee experiences considered within the leadership category to mitigate bias.

figure 1

a , MHCC applicants were scored on resumes and cover letters, and the highest-scoring teams were selected to participate in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals based on composite scores. b , The live event featured semifinal presentations, keynote addresses, final presentations that were open to the public and a networking session for all participants who advanced to the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinalist teams were then presented with a case prompt and had 1 week to research and develop a cohesive and innovative proposal in the form of a 15-min presentation. Scoring was based on proposal impact, feasibility and innovation, as well as the depth and comprehensiveness of the research findings and the overall quality of the presentation and deliverables. Internal organizing members evaluated and selected semifinalist teams, which subsequently competed in the live event. Here, teams presented their business proposals to a panel of judges from sponsoring companies and were judged with the same criteria.

In addition to the experiential learning gained by proposing solutions to the given case, both MHCC 2022 and 2023 offered immersive networking opportunities with industry professionals from top companies. The main event featured keynote addresses from industry representatives, outlining their career paths and current roles, followed by Q&A sessions that allowed trainees to actively participate and gain valuable insights. Trainee engagement with industry professionals was further enhanced through a dedicated networking session, in which trainees had the opportunity to interact with sponsor representatives in small groups. This exposure not only expanded participants’ awareness of their career prospects but also created pathways to potential internships, research collaborations and full-time positions.

Securing sponsorship

Securing sponsorship was crucial to MHCC as that provided both financial support and increased prize appeal to prospective applicants. However, it is important to note that such funding is not essential for a successful event, and many case competitions succeed without raising such funds. To connect with potential sponsors for MHCC funding, we used both external connections (via LinkedIn) and internal alumni databases of our respective graduate trainee consulting groups, miLEAD, BALSA and WiSolve. We engaged with both generalist and life-science-focused consulting firms across the United States through these networks, and further expanded to connecting with pharmaceutical companies in 2023. To attract sponsors, we created a compelling sponsorship pitch deck that highlighted the event’s objectives, format and benefits and the value of support. Sponsorships were categorized into three tiers (Gold, Silver and Bronze) to accommodate different budgets and objectives. In addition to financial contributions, sponsors were also actively involved in the main event, specifically by providing keynote speakers and/or judges and preparing the case prompt, depending on sponsorship tier. Furthermore, a partnership with an educational sponsor was formed to connect participants with job interview resources. This approach benefited participants by providing special insights into target firms and guidance from personnel at these firms to expand their professional networks.

Advertising

The organizing team conducted advertising through various social media platforms as well as through personal emails to various consulting clubs and organizations globally. MHCC predominantly used LinkedIn to spark interest, share important logistical information pertaining to applications, highlight the competition process and spread the announcement of winning teams. Through LinkedIn (Midwest Healthcare Case Competition), MHCC posted over 15 times for 2022 (232 reactions) and over 45 times for 2023 (694 reactions). Additionally, the MHCC 2022 organizing team leads (M.S.M. and I.M.) were invited to appear as guests on Management Consulted’s Strategy Simplified podcast 14 (rated among the top strategy podcasts in the United States 15 ) to share their journeys from academia to non-academic careers in consulting, highlight the role case competitions played in their professional development and overall career trajectories, and promote the unique opportunities afforded by MHCC. Aside from spreading awareness about the competition on social media, the 2022 MHCC team identified and sent emails to 66 graduate consulting clubs both nationally and internationally to personally invite their members to apply to the competition. With each email, the team shared a flier detailing event information and team-building sessions that each group could distribute to their respective networks. The MHCC 2023 organizing team was intentional about expanding both the number and demographics of institutions represented, reaching out to 105 graduate consulting groups. Internal marketing further supplemented these efforts and was executed by taking advantage of the strong marketing platforms already in place through miLEAD, BALSA and WiSolve, along with their respective institutions.

Event outcomes

Key performance indicators.

Several key performance indicators (KPIs) were set forth during the ideation phase of MHCC 2022, including (i) a minimum of 200 individual graduate applicants, (ii) diverse academic representation from universities across the globe while maintaining participation from the host institutions of the organizing teams (that is, UM, WUSTL and UW) and (iii) $10,000 raised in external sponsorship. All of these 2022 KPIs were not only met but exceeded in 2022, with MHCC receiving 209 applicants from 55 different institutions across the globe. During MHCC 2023, the original 2022 KPIs were maintained while KPIs were added for bolstering DE&I by reaching students who encounter systemic disadvantages, including those from resource-limited institutions or without prior exposure to business and consulting. This was achieved via (i) expanding outreach beyond top-tier institutions to minority-serving (as defined by the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions, https://cmsi.gse.rutgers.edu/content/what-are-msis , and The Hundred-Seven’s list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, http://www.thehundred-seven.org/hbculist.html ) and non-R1 institutions (as identified by ref. 16 ) and to those institutions with no graduate consulting club affiliation and (ii) securing pharmaceutical company sponsors in addition to consulting firms to diversify the sponsor list and broaden the networking opportunities for candidates. All of these 2023 KPIs were also successfully achieved — MHCC received 229 applicants in 2023 (a 9.5% increase from 2022) from 61 different institutions (an 11% increase). Figure 2 shows outcomes of boosting DE&I outreach in MHCC 2023.

figure 2

MHCC worked to strategically broaden the applicant pool in 2023. Metrics for assessing this included affiliations with non-R1 research institutions, minority-serving institutions and consulting clubs. In a testament to event success, there were more applicants from minority-serving institutions in 2023, as well as more teams without a consulting club affiliation, indicative of MHCC’s accessibility and intention to serve as a professional development opportunity.

Participant feedback

Upon conclusion of MHCC 2022, the organizing team surveyed participants ( n = 33 responses) to gauge their perspectives on how the event had gone, as well as what they took away from it (Fig. 3a ). To better assess the long-term benefits of MHCC, finalist teams ( n = 10 responses) were also surveyed 9 months after the competition to determine the role MHCC played in their career development (Fig. 3b–f ). (Of note, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at WUSTL classified the surveys as a quality improvement project and thus not requiring IRB approval.) Both surveys served to provide key insights in planning for MHCC 2023. Importantly, 100% of respondents to the follow-up survey indicated that MHCC did not affect their graduation timeline, which is critical in gaining institutional support for graduate trainees to participate in such events. Further, relative to other non-academic business training opportunities such as consulting groups/clubs and/or entrepreneurship courses, 100% of respondents believed that MHCC provided comparable or greater value to their career development. This is key in demonstrating that the return on investment for a 1-week case competition is at least equal to, if not greater than, activities requiring a commitment of 10–15 weeks or more. Importantly, the condensed time frame of a case competition opens the door to even more biomedical graduate trainees who have limited flexibility to introduce time-intensive extracurriculars into their lab schedules. From qualitative responses, finalists reported experiencing tremendous positive impact from this event, stating that MHCC was instrumental in forming professional relationships with judges, enabled the application of “structural thinking and [the] hypothesis driven process” outside the lab and was “key in verifying that [a non-academic business career] is what I wanted to pursue in the long-term.”

figure 3

a , In an online survey immediately following MHCC, a majority of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the case prompt was intellectually and professionally challenging, the event broadened their business acumen and consulting skills, and they improved both teamwork and presentation skills. b , A long-term follow-up survey sent to MHCC 2022 finalists also indicated that MHCC aided their job marketability, added value to their resumes and/or cover letters and contributed to a perceived increase in job interviews. Further, most respondents also reported that they specifically referred to their MHCC experience in job interviews. c , MHCC finalists also saw success in receiving interview invitations in a competitive consulting job market for the 2023 cycle. d , e , From a networking perspective, a majority of survey respondents reported forming both peer ( d ) and non-peer connections ( e ) that extended beyond LinkedIn invitations. f , The vast majority of respondents further indicated that they benefited significantly from these peer and non-peer connections.

Relationships with sponsors

MHCC’s success was largely due to the monetary and educational support from its sponsors. Not only did these sponsors’ financial and personnel contributions enable MHCC to run smoothly, but their impact has extended far beyond the weeklong competition. Since MHCC 2022, four of the sponsors have hosted information sessions and coffee chats for miLEAD, BALSA and WiSolve, along with their broader university communities, reaching a few hundred trainees. The various sponsors also recognized the value of this access to high-caliber MHCC applicants: several of the sponsoring organizations reached out to the MHCC organizing team expressing interest in sponsoring future competitions and continuing to advertise and recruit from the partnering organizations and universities. In 2023, there were four returning sponsors and three new sponsors, with two of those returning matching their 2022 financial commitments and two doubling it. The returning sponsorships demonstrate these industry firms’ strong commitment to and belief in MHCC. Additionally, the 2022 educational sponsor also returned in 2023. MHCC has offered significant mutual benefits for trainees and sponsors as a means to enhance trainee satisfaction and enable sponsors to recruit high-caliber graduate trainees.

Conclusions and recommendations

After the success of the inaugural 2022 MHCC, the partnering organizations collectively decided to continue our collaboration and make MHCC an annual event. As further evidence of MHCC’s success, the second annual MHCC in 2023 was fully funded through sponsorship agreements with a mix of both repeat and new sponsors and saw growth in applicant turnout and diversity of institutions represented. Through achieving or exceeding predetermined KPIs formed by each organizing committee from 2022 to 2023, MHCC has generated significant positive impact in the graduate trainee community around the globe.

Case competitions such as MHCC offer great professional development opportunities to biomedical graduate trainees, and certainly have impacts on both the recruiting and interview process (Fig. 3 ). Two of the primary goals of MHCC were to provide opportunities for collaboration amongst biomedical graduate trainees and industry firms and to enhance the business acumen of trainees. MHCC undoubtedly achieved this through facilitating meaningful peer and non-peer connections, boosting trainees’ confidence in tackling the non-academic job market and contributing to the interview preparation process. Recognizing the importance of such experiences, Maggie Gardner, senior program manager for STEM professional development at the University of Michigan, who was not involved in MHCC, stated that through this opportunity, “You are developing skills beyond the technical expertise required for your degree, such as leadership, collaboration and project management, skills employers are keenly looking for.” In her role, Gardner works to develop, deliver and support professional development programming focused on career exploration for the nearly 7,100 STEM graduate trainees at the University of Michigan. Commenting on the networking benefits of MHCC, Gardner stated, “Meeting and networking with like-minded peers from top institutions with similar career aspirations will massively help with the direction of one’s career no matter what area of industry they end up going into. Your peers are valuable resources.” MHCC and similar initiatives do more than just offer a competition — they pave the way for holistic professional growth, offer vital networking opportunities and provide a smoother transition into diverse post-graduate roles, underscoring the importance of integrating practical experiences into graduate training.

As demonstrated through MHCC’s success and growth in its first 2 years, we know that there is a need for future short-term non-academic opportunities, whether it be case competitions or events of a similar format, to target biomedical graduate trainees. In laying out the playbook for executing such an event, critical components include the core organizing team, sponsor support and an established structure for the various competition rounds. Specifically, MHCC organizing team members were engaged in regular planning meetings for 7 months leading up to the events in 2022 and 2023, respectively, to secure funding and sponsorship, detail and plan event logistics, conduct advertising to ensure maximal participation, and create and manage applications. Sponsorship is also a key element to the success of such events as it can serve to expand both geographic and academic reach. Looking forward, we know that MHCC, along with similar short-term opportunities, will continue to be a valuable resource for biomedical graduate trainees as they explore the multitude of career paths available to them, academic and otherwise 10 , 17 . We encourage more trainees to take advantage of such opportunities to supplement their graduate training.
