Amazing GCSE results for pupil living with long covid - who also raised £8,000 for charity

birmingham case study geography aqa

Inspiring pupil Libby Parker achieved four GCSEs at Grade 9 while facing the challenges of Long Covid. Her illness meant the RGS Worcester pupil only had limited time she could spend in school each week.

Not only did Libby smash her GCSEs, she's also raised over £8000 along the way with her ‘Big Push’, fundraising for children affected by long covid. She is looking forward to studying her A Level studies, supported by RGS.

Well done Libby!

GCSE success runs in Yardley family as dad says 'I'm really proud'

birmingham case study geography aqa

A proud dad from Yardley has been in touch to tell us his twin boys have aced their GCSE's today. Alisher Muhammad and Alimusa Muhammad, pupils at KESH Academy, Sheldon Heath, achieved Grade 9 - 7 in most subjects today. Alisher wants to be a barrister in the future, while Alimusa wants to study cyber security at university.

And it seems academic success is something of a tradition in the family as their older sister, Mahnoor Shafquat, also did exceptionally well in her exams a few years ago - she was even featured on our GCSE liveblog in 2017! "I am really proud of my twin boys for their excellent grades and wish them all the best for the future," said dad Shafquat Mehmood.

Clearly, this family has a knack for success. Congratulations to the entire family - your hard work and determination has paid off! Want to share your story? Get in touch at [email protected]

'More and more young people' opting for apprenticeships over A levels

There are many pathways for students on the road to their dream jobs. While A levels are a good fit for some, others might be keen to explore other options like a pprenticeships and more technical qualifications.

Jennifer Coupland, chief executive of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), has issued the following advice to GCSE students: “I want to say huge congratulations to all the students getting their GCSE results today. They are a massive credit to their schools and parents.

"A Levels will be an excellent next step for many of them, but continuing full-time academic learning doesn’t work for everybody. There are now over 700 apprenticeships and 20 T Levels, which all involve substantial on-the-job training. More and more young people are choosing this route into exciting careers every year.”

Cyber-security expert warns proud parents 'do not to overshare on the internet'

If your child has done well in their GCSEs, it is only natural to want share their achievements online. While this might seem harmless, it is important that parents and family members are cautious when posting online.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L says: "Whilst sharing results alone is ok, sharing them alongside an image of your child in their school uniform or tagging the college they’re heading could be risky. Sharing information or photos of their children on any social media platform, even if their account is private, ultimately leaves a digital footprint. “Firstly, this can lead to future problems such as university decisions or job applications. What the internet says about your child, this can impact these outcomes. Also, if any shared images of personal information, get into the wrong hands of a cybercriminal- such as a child’s full name, birthdates and approximate school and address- this can have serious repercussions, from cyberbullying to identity theft. “Putting personal information online for the world to see is risky for anybody, especially children under 18. It’s important for parents to think twice about what they share publicly.”

"And yet they have stepped up to the challenges laid before them and taken every opportunity to ensure that period in time did not define them or their educational achievements."

Gap in GCSE results between private and state schools widens at highest level

The gap in GCSE results between private and state schools has widened at the highest grades, PA is reporting. Almost half of entries from private schools scored at least a grade 7 this year, compared to around a fifth of those from both comprehensive schools and academies.

The figures, published by England’s exams regulator Ofqual, will spark fresh concerns among experts about inequalities in the education system and widening attainment gaps between rich and poor youngsters.

CEO of automotive giant says 'getting youth into the industry is the way forward'

While heading to college or sixth form to take A levels might be the natural choice for many students getting their GCSE results today, there are plenty of other career pathways available. Steve Horne is the CEO of GSF Car Parts , the UK’s leading distributor of car parts.

He has commented on the need for more youth in the automotive industry. He said: "As students across the UK receive their exam results, it’s crucial to highlight the expanding skills gap in the automotive sector - an issue that is becoming increasingly critical and continues to widen.

“Despite GSF Car Parts actively recruiting and creating a multitude of skilled positions, the difficulty in finding suitable candidates persists with no end in sight - and getting youth into the industry is the way forward.

“We urgently need to address this shortage by encouraging the new generation of students to view the automotive industry as a promising career path. There are thousands of extensive apprenticeship roles that provide practical experience and a gateway into this dynamic field."

'I don’t care about your GCSE results', says hiring manager

birmingham case study geography aqa

Didn't get the results you wanted in your GCSEs? Fear not, because Gareth Hoyle, Founder of Marketing Signals , says GCSE are never something he looks for when hiring. He says job experience and other qualifications are more important to any employer.

He said: "I run a digital marketing agency and have interviewed hundreds of candidates with various skills and experiences. One thing is certain: their GCSE grades have never been a deciding factor. Sure, I might glance at them if I’m interviewing a school leaver with little other qualifications or experience. But, if their results were low, I’d still consider them for the job. Their work ethic, practical skills, and ability to fit in the team matter most."

GCSE results gap between London and the north-east narrows, but 'significant differences' remain

The GCSE results gap between London and the north-east of England has narrowed for the first time in nearly a decade - but 'significant differences' still remain. Both regions continue to have the highest and lowest proportion of GCSE entries awarded grade 7/A or above respectively, though this has fallen to 10.7 percentage points from 10.8 points in 2023.

It is the first time this gap has narrowed year-on-year since 2016, when it fell from 7.7 points to 7.5 points. Pepe Di’Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said the results show “significant differences” in regional outcomes for GCSEs in England.

He said: “This suggests that relative levels of prosperity and socioeconomic disadvantage continue to play a huge part in educational outcomes, and addressing these gaps must be a key priority for the new government working alongside the education sector. “We have to do more to support our schools and colleges. Funding and teacher shortages, combined with post-pandemic issues around mental health, behaviour and attendance, have made circumstances particularly challenging.”

Lisa Mason, Principal at Ormiston Forge Academy, said: "Our students' GCSE results are a testament to their hard work and perseverance over the past few years. I am so pleased to join them today in celebrating their achievements.

“We can’t wait to see what they accomplish in their next chapter of education; I know they all have incredibly bright futures ahead of them.”

At Ninestiles, an Academy, head girl and award-winning public speaker Marigold Adu received three grade 9s and all other subjects at grade 7 or above.

OCR grade boundaries released - here's what you need to pass

OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA) has released its grade boundaries for the 2024 GCSE exams. All GCSEs in England are marked on a 1 to 9 numerical scale, with 9 being the highest. Grades 7 to 9 are equivalent to the old A and A* grades.

Take a look at what marks you need for each grade for OCR exams here .

Top GCSE grades fall but remain above pre-pandemic levels, figures show

The proportion of GCSE students awarded top grades has fallen from last year, but is still higher than before the Covid-19 pandemic, national figures show. The figures, published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), cover GCSE entries from students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

More than a fifth (21.8%) of UK GCSE entries were awarded the top grades – at least a 7 or an A grade – this year, down 0.2 percentage points on last year when 22.0% of entries achieved the top grades. According to figures from Ofqual, the number of 16-year-old students in England who received a 9 – the highest grade under the numerical grading system – in all their subjects has risen on last year. But there are also nearly 5% more GCSE entries this year compared to last.

Margaret Farragher, chief executive of the JCQ, said: “These achievements are hard-earned and students should feel justly proud to have reached this important milestone in their educational journey.”

HMRC Child Benefit warning ahead of GCSE results day

Expert advice for parents on dealing with disappointing GCSE results

Gareth Greenwood, education expert for High Speed Training has shared the following advice to parents on how to support their child if they don't get the GCSEs they hoped for.

1) Celebrate achievements

Gareth comments: Whatever results students are faced with, remembering that each individual has experienced their own, personal journey to get there is vital. Remind them of the obstacles they’ve overcome to get to this point - it’s a credit to their work ethic in such challenging times.

“For students who haven’t done as well as expected, they’re going to be feeling a whole mixture of emotions, including disappointment and panic. It’s important to remind them that they did their best, which is only something to be proud of - these results won’t be the sole determinant of their future success."

2) Consider getting their exams re-marked

Gareth shares: “Students are required to get a minimum of a 4 in maths and either English literature or language to avoid having to retake them at A level. So the first step for students who have scored a high 3 in these subjects is to ask for a re-mark. It’s not a certainty that re-marking their paper will increase their grade, and in some cases the grade can be lowered, but it’s definitely a step that’s worth considering if the result is close to a 4.

“There is a charge for getting the exams re-marked, but in many cases this is something that the school will cover. It should also be said that if the grade is less than a 3, there’s very little chance of it increasing to a 4, so in this case it’s not worth asking for a re-mark.”

3) Contact the college or sixth form

Gareth explains: “Many colleges will do what they can to accept your child, even if they underperformed in their GCSEs, so it’s vital that you speak to them about what options your child has. It’s possible that they will offer your child a place on their chosen course, with conditions relating to performance or retaking key GCSEs. They may also offer them a place on a similar course.

4) Consider the career path your child wants to take

Gareth says: “Many students will be under the impression that not receiving their desired results means they can’t pursue the career path they had in mind - it’s important to reassess and rationalise these thoughts. It’s possible that your child can still get into their chosen career path by going straight into employment, or by taking qualifications that aren’t A-levels, so it’s important that you evaluate whether college is a necessity or a bonus when it comes to entering their career of choice."

5) Don’t rush into decision making; seek further support and advice

Gareth comments: “In the unfortunate case that your child doesn’t receive the results they need, take time to let feelings and emotions die down so that you’re both able to see the bigger picture. There’s no immediate rush to make a decision, regardless of the outcome you’ve been faced with."
