Narrative Essay on Road Accident I Witnessed

Narrative essay generator.

Accidents on the road can be life-altering experiences, often leaving a lasting impact on those who witness them. One such incident that I witnessed a few years ago still lingers in my mind, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. This essay recounts the details of that harrowing event, aiming to shed light on the consequences of negligence and the paramount importance of vigilance while on the road.

The Day of the Accident

It was a bright and sunny afternoon in mid-July. The streets were bustling with people, and the air was filled with the usual cacophony of honking cars, chattering pedestrians, and the distant hum of city life. I was on my way home from school, walking along the sidewalk, lost in thoughts of the day’s events and the homework that awaited me.

As I approached a busy intersection, the traffic light turned green, signaling for pedestrians to cross. I waited for a few seconds, allowing a car to pass before stepping onto the zebra crossing. What happened next unfolded in a matter of seconds but felt like an eternity. A speeding motorcycle, attempting to beat the red light, swerved into view. The rider, realizing too late that he couldn’t make it, attempted to brake but lost control.

The motorcycle skidded across the road, heading straight for a pedestrian about to reach the other side. In a desperate attempt to avoid a direct collision, the rider veered to the left but ended up crashing into a nearby car. The impact was so severe that the rider was thrown off his bike, landing several feet away, motionless.

The Immediate Aftermath

The scene that followed was one of chaos and panic. The sound of the crash had drawn the attention of everyone nearby. Pedestrians screamed, and drivers honked, creating a cacophony of noise. I stood frozen, my heart racing, as I processed what I had just witnessed.

Several people rushed towards the injured rider and the occupants of the car, trying to offer assistance. I remember the overwhelming sense of helplessness as I watched them dial emergency numbers, their voices urgent and shaky. The driver of the car, visibly shaken but uninjured, stepped out to check on the rider, who lay still on the pavement.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens filled the air as an ambulance and police cars arrived at the scene. The medical team quickly attended to the rider, who was fortunately still alive but seriously injured. The police cordoned off the area, redirecting traffic and starting their preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.

Reflections on the Incident

As the adrenaline faded and I continued my journey home, the gravity of what I had witnessed began to sink in. It was a sobering reminder of how quickly a normal day could turn tragic due to a moment of carelessness. The rider’s decision to speed and beat the red light had not only endangered his life but also those of others around him.

This incident highlighted the critical importance of road safety measures, such as obeying traffic signals, wearing helmets, and driving within speed limits. It also underscored the unpredictable nature of road accidents and the need for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant at all times.

In the days that followed, I found myself more cautious and aware of my surroundings while walking or riding in a vehicle. The accident served as a powerful lesson on the consequences of negligence on the road and the collective responsibility we share in preventing such tragedies.

The road accident I witnessed was a stark reminder of the thin line between life and death and the impact of our choices behind the wheel. It taught me the importance of road safety, not just as a set of rules to follow, but as a commitment to protecting ourselves and others. As we navigate the roads of life, let us do so with caution and care, mindful of the precious lives that depend on our vigilance and responsibility. This narrative serves as a call to action for all of us to prioritize safety and make our roads safer for everyone.

Short Essay on an Accident I Saw

On a regular day, I was returning from school. It was a hot summer day, and the road was clean and traffic-free. Suddenly, listen to a loud sound: a bike hits an SUV car, and the biker falls onto the road.

Immediately, I ran to the biker. He was without a helmet and heavily injured in the head. Meanwhile, the driver of the car came out and started scolding the biker. I stopped the driver and said, This is the time to help, not fight. I requested that he call an ambulance a few minutes later to the hospital.

This accident experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. This experience taught me the importance of helmets and road safety.

Long Essay on an Accident I Saw

The time was early morning on winter’s foggy day. The road was fully covered by fog, and there was not any traffic on the road.

I woke up early that day for my study. I was studying at my table when I suddenly heard the loud sound of someone shouting. I opened my window and saw that somebody had crashed his car into the wall beside the road.

Immediately I ran to that car, and two of my neighbours reached the car, and we together brought the driver outside of the car. He was bleeding from his head and had several other injuries to his body.

The driver had not worn a seatbelt, and that led to several injuries. I called an ambulance within 5 minutes, and it reached and took him to the hospital. In the evening, the police took his car out.

I remember this terrible experience from that accident. It happened so fast that I just can’t believe it in my eyes. This accident reminds me about road safety and the importance of consciousness when driving.

I was returning home from the office in an auto-rickshaw. As we crossed the Green Park Red Light, a red Swift car speeded past us. It was racing ahead of us. Suddenly a man tried to run across the road. He miscalculated the speed of the red Swift. And before the car could apply breaks, the man was hit and thrown off the road. The car however speeded away. Luckily the man was not badly hurt. He was taken to the nearby doctor. After the first aid, he was sent home.

Essay on An Accident I Have Seen ( 250 to 300 words )

An Accident you have Witnessed Accidents on the roads are a common occurrence these days. Some are killed. Many are injured or maimed. The increase in vehicles, poor condition of the roads, rash driving, and non-observance of traffic rules are responsible for the ever-increasing accidents. So it is important for us to learn to use the roads properly and safely.

Last week I witnessed a horrifying accident near my school . I shall never forget it for a long time. The road in front of my school is very narrow. It is always crowded particularly in the afternoons when school gets over. Sometimes a policeman is there to control the traffic but generally chaos reigns.

It was Monday. The school had just finished. The road was crowded as usual. The students were running across the road to get into buses and cars to go home. Just then I saw a boy run across the road. All of a sudden I heard a loud scream and the screech of brakes. The boy was knocked down by a car. He lost consciousness and there was the blood rushing out from a cut on his head. Soon a large crowd gathered around the boy. Someone in the crowd tied a bandage around the cut. The boy was rushed to a hospital. Many people surrounded the driver of the car and began abusing him. Fortunately, a policeman arrived and calmed things down. A case was registered and the driver was taken to the police station. Slowly the crowd started dispersing. Since that day I am careful in using the roads.

Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate reality of our lives. The daily news reports generally contain at least one incident of a road accident. Depending on the severity of the accident, the number of casualties and the damage done can be concerning. Road accidents cost a lot of lives and property damage. To avoid accidents, everyone should be more careful and vigilant on the streets. As a driver, one must be extra cautious because one mistake from the driver can cost the lives of innocent others.

The Road Accident That I Experienced

I remember the first road accident I witnessed. It had changed my perspective on life. I still remember the date and the day very intricately. It was the 20th of September 2016. I was returning home from tuition. My mother had come to pick me up. It was around 6 o'clock in the evening. When we reached the bus stand, we saw a huge crowd of people at a few feet of distance from the bus stop. There were men in the crowd who were screaming in the regional language.

At first, we couldn't understand what was going on. After a while of careful overhearing of the conversation of everyone near us, we could understand that there was an accident. So to get to the bottom of it we asked a shopkeeper what had  happened. He told us that indeed an accident took place a while ago. He then went on to give us a detailed event of what happened. According to him, a pedestrian was crossing the road. A passenger's bus had hit him. The man was left bleeding on the street. The people in the area then cornered the bus and assaulted the bus driver. The police were called to the scene. As for the pedestrian, when the police came over, they declared the man dead. However, as a formality, they sent him to the hospital but according to the shopkeeper, there is not much hope for a miracle.

This incident made me realize how fragile life is. It could very well have been me or my loved one instead of that man.  The man was not at fault as he was following the rules, but because of the ignorance of another careless man, he had to lose his life. This incident has left a scar on my mind which still bothers me at times.

Road accidents are a fairly tragic event that has dangerously increased in numbers nowadays. Today, there are more automobiles on the streets than ever. Some say that this increase in the number of automobiles is the reason the number of road accidents is increasing too. Some others say that people nowadays have become more careless, this leads to a higher number of accidents due to carelessness. Another problem that is very prevalent in India is the lack of civic sense in people. People in the cities of India do not strictly adhere to the traffic rules; some people also lack the basic road sense. On top of that, certain parts of the city have narrow roads. All these add up to increase road accidents.

Description of Road Accident:

Road accidents are scary for our lives. In recent times it has increased more. Every morning when you open a newspaper every second or third page will have news related to road accidents. The reason for increasing road accidents is due to the fact that people are buying more automobiles and have also become careless while driving vehicles.

Many a time we have seen that people are just avoiding following traffic rules. Especially in metropolitan cities, people are more careless while driving vehicles which ultimately lead to road accidents.

The foremost causes of road accidents in such metropolitan areas can be narrow roads and roads with potholes.

Thus a road accident damages the lives of life and material. People should be very careful while driving or walking on the road.

It is also seen that walking on the road is also equally dangerous because of heavy traffic it can also be harmful to the people walking on the road. Hence, such people should walk on the side of the road or walk on footpaths.

Road Accident Incident:

Once I was coming back from my office at that time when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my co-worker and it was around 6 o’clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two groups of people but then after reaching the spot, we found that an accident had taken place.

After talking with the people present there, we came to know that a man who was crossing the road met with an accident while crossing the road. A truck passing by hit him leaving him with serious injuries. The man was lying on the ground bleeding and people were calling for an ambulance, plus they also informed the police about the incident.

Subsequently, the police arrived and caught the driver of the truck as people had already taken a hold of the driver. During the investigation with the driver, the cops came to know that the driver was drunk and was driving the vehicle. Later on, cops detained him and took the injured person to the nearest hospital, and took a statement from the injured person. The driver was released later based on the statement given by the person. That incident made me realize how precious our lives are and we must be very careful when we are walking on the road, on foot, or driving a car.

  Prevention from Road Accidents:

There are some most important points that every person should keep in mind while driving or walking or crossing the road. These points are as follows:

Drive within the prescribed speed limit.

Don’t drink or smoke while driving.

Follow all the traffic rules as they are for our safety.

Never use mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Always drive in the proper lane.

While riding a bike always wear a helmet.

IELTS Cue Card Sample 6 – An accident you saw

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe an accident you saw.

You should say:

  • where the accident occurred
  • where you were then
  • when it was

and explain how you felt about it.

Follow-up Questions:

  • What should be done to reduce road accidents?
  • Who should be responsible for the accidents?
  • What damages do you think occurs when an accident takes place?

Model Answer 1: Nobody really likes “accidents”, but still, they take place and affect our lives significantly when it is least expected. Today, I would like to talk about one such accident which took place at one of the major and busiest intersections of my hometown.

If I remember correctly, I was coming back from my office on a public bus on a Friday late afternoon a couple of months ago, the road was a bit more busy and congested than usual perhaps because of the rush to return home quickly from work. The traffics of both small and big vehicles were flowing from all directions through 6 major roads with at least 2 roads curving down slightly while approaching the intersection. On a regular day with regular traffic flow and regular traffic speed, of course, this slight road “anomaly” wouldn’t exactly pose much of a problem or risk unless a significant number of new drivers/people out of the town, who are unfamiliar with this road “anomaly”, was driving in those roads and trying to take over each other in hurry.

But, unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened on that “fateful” Friday afternoon, and the result was a sudden and unavoidable “accident” between a 12-wheel truck and a private car as the big truck was trying to overtake the car at a dangerous speed in order to avoid the “red” traffic signal while hitting the car, leaving at least one car passenger seriously injured. The accident happened so fast that I just stared at the accident site in “shock and fear” with a “numb” feeling on my whole body for a while.

Anyway, after witnessing the accident, I initially felt very shocked and scared. Then, after recollecting myself, I felt a sense of real anger and rage in me as if I was going to “hurt” the truck driver because of his senseless and totally irresponsible acts. I also felt that I needed to take up the issue to the road authority so that they could immediate steps to “fix” the roads as soon as possible in the greater interest of public safety.

Sample Answer 2: The most mortifying accident that I have ever witnessed is the one that I saw near (…say the name of the place…) while a train smashed a passenger bus near an intersection. I saw the accident almost 4 years ago and I can remember the event vividly even today, and the experience still traumatises me.

I was on my way to my hometown on a vacation from the capital city where I’m currently residing in. There is a train pass/cross on the road and our bus stopped at the signal. I was busy reading a magazine and all of a sudden, I heard a loud crashing sound and I looked through the window. What I saw was unimaginable – the fast passing train had hit a bus that was trying to pass the intersection. The bus flew away like a toy and we could hear the unbearable screaming of victims. Lots of people had gathered there and the train was passing slowly. People became speechless on the effect of the devastating accident. I could see people trying to help the wounded sufferers and 2-3 ambulances reached there after 15 minutes or so. The bus driver was blamed for the incident and I heard that he was dead too. Our bus could not move forward as traffic broke down. The wounded people were taken to nearby hospitals and the dead bodies were placed in a nearby field. The entire place became a dismal area and people mourned on the event. I started feeling sick and tried to help the wounded people.

I have witnessed more than 30 people lying dead and their relatives were crying and mourning ruefully. I left the place after 4/5 hours and could not think of anything else. The whole event occurred in a few minutes and the effect was devastating. I had spent nearly 2 weeks in a hallucination and thought a lot about the people who died there and about their grieving relatives. It came to my mind that, our life is hanging on the cliffs and we are sometimes so helpless.

Describe an accident you saw (funny).

Model Answer 3:  The idea of an accident sounds like it should be bad. But sometimes accidents are quite comical to watch and if nobody is hurt then I think it is OK to laugh.

I’m going to tell you a story about an accident I saw a very, very long time ago, but I can remember it really well, you’ll find out why in a bit… I’ll explain where the accident took place, where I was, a bit of detail about the incident and how it affected me.

The accident took place in a large old house that was in very poor repair. I was unemployed at the time and was sharing the house with a few friends who were also job-seeking as we had all just finished at university. It was in the 1980s and it was very difficult to get work in the UK at that time. We had chosen the house because it was really cheap. The way it was set out wasn’t very safe, there was a tiny kitchen on a stairwell that we all had to share, and this meant that many of our communal chats took place sitting on the stairs gathered around the landing.

On this particular day, it was the first thing in the morning. We were all half asleep and stumbling around just in our dressing gowns or nightwear. I was sat at the top of the stairs (near to the kitchen) waiting to use the kitchen as one of my friends, Gill, had got in their first and there wasn’t room for both of us. Another of our housemates appeared at the bottom of the stairs and sat there looking tearful and crestfallen. She had had a terrible argument with her boyfriend and was very upset. Gill, who was already in the kitchen, kindly offered to make her a cup of tea – but as she was putting the kettle on she was distracted by the tears of our upset mutual friend. Gill turned to talk to her just as she was lighting the gas – catastrophe! The flame caught her dressing gown and the next moment the whole garment seemed on fire. I gasped, my tea-making friend thought quickly, she ripped off her clothes, and rolled on the floor, tumbling down the stairs ending up in a naked heap at the feet of our crying companion. The shock of this sight caused the sobs to stop. ‘Why are you at the bottom of the stairs and why have you got no clothes on?’ queried our now no-longer crying friend. I and my friend Gill just laughed uproariously, partly with relief (it could have been a lot worse) and partly with disbelief.  Our upset friend had been so preoccupied with her own worries she’d missed the entire thing. We couldn’t believe it when it was all so dramatic.

How did the accident affect me? It just made me laugh a lot at the time, and even now when I remember it I do so with a smile. It was such a ridiculous thing to happen, and it certainly broke the rather serious mood the morning had started with. I also think we were very lucky, it might not have ended that way. There is a saying that ‘all’s well that ends well’ – that was certainly the case here.

Perhaps it isn’t true to say that no-one was hurt in this story, I think that maybe pride was hurt quite a bit, but it was a long time ago and the main ‘victim’ of this story, Gill, still laughs about it with me now!

Describe an accident you saw (serious).

Model Answer 4:  Wow, talking about an accident I saw is quite challenging! I can think an example, but it wasn’t nice to witness. I’ll tell you where the accident occurred and where I was at the time, a bit of extra detail about what happened, and then finally I’ll tell you what happened. That seems a logical way to explain it.

The accident took place in the outdoor arena of a large horse riding school, where I was sharing a jumping lesson with a friend. The backdrop to where it took place is really beautiful, as the equestrian centre is set in a rural location in the picturesque countryside of Glossop, which is within an area known as the High Peaks in the county of Derbyshire, England.

My friend and I both wanted to improve our technique of jumping. I’m quite an experienced rider, but not very confident jumping – I prefer flat work, my friend is a great athlete, but new to horse riding, she was very confident, but not very experienced. We had warmed up already, riding our horses around under the guidance of an instructor at walk, trot and canter. We’d taken the horses over some low cross-poles, which are small jumps you commonly use when you are teaching either a horse or rider to jump so they can gain confidence. About 15 minutes into the lesson, we started to take it in turns to try slightly bigger fences, but nothing too challenging. I’d already taken my horse over, and it was my friend’s turn to try. So I was sat on my horse watching her as she rode towards the fence. The instructor and I were both very calm, as was my friend, it was a small cross pole, and nothing she and the horse hadn’t done before.

She trotted her pony to the jump, but then at the last minute, her mount just stumbled, literally tripping over the poles. Perhaps because my friend was a bit inexperienced, it caused her to lose her balance, the teacher and I both gasped, and then laughed as she seemed to recover herself and ended up back in the saddle…

Unfortunately, we relaxed too soon, the horse seemed to still have her feet in a knot and so tripped again, this time the forward momentum catapulted my friend into the air. We watched in slow motion as she went up in a huge arc, and then fell towards the ground. Unfortunately, her instinct was to put her hand out to break her fall, this meant her arm was completely extended and she took the full weight of her body onto just one hand. We heard a sickening split as the bones in her lower arm broke, and it was very obvious that she had a serious injury. She was still conscious but in an awful lot of pain.

You never quite know how you will behave in an accident. I went into a very calm mode, I quickly dismounted and caught the loose horse, who was a bit confused about what had happened. The instructor called an ambulance, and I took the horses back to the yard, explained what had happened, and arranged for people to stand at various points on the property to help direct the ambulance to where it was needed before going back to the school. Unfortunately, the instructor was rather squeamish, she couldn’t bear the sight of blood and so although she was handling the situation well, she couldn’t really look at my friend. So I sat near her and tried to keep her talking while we all waited for the ambulance. We knew it was very important she didn’t move in case she had broken her back as well, and we were trying to keep her conscious so it would be possible for the paramedics to assess her more easily when they came.

The ambulance took a very, very long time to arrive because of our remote location. However, when they came they were fantastic.  They gave my friend a lot of morphine – which is a very powerful painkiller – and were incredibly calm. I had to help roll her onto the stretcher, but we were very relieved when she went off to the hospital safely. Her arm was very badly damaged. She has had lots of operations and I’m not sure if she will be riding again!

The accident affected me quite a lot because I was astounded that she was so unlucky in how she fell. The horse just tripped, it wasn’t being naughty or difficult, and it all happened in slow motion so right up until the last minute I thought she might be alright. I was pleased how well I and the instructor worked together to get help, and that I’d been able to stay calm and focused at the time. Since then I have jumped again, but really I think I’ve decided to stick to flatwork (dressage) from now on. Watching an accident makes you realise how fragile life can be and how easily and quickly you can be hurt, not through being stupid, but just through being unlucky.

Tips for answering this cue card topic:

Watching an accident and its effect is a devastating experience. So, describe how dangerous the accident was, how awfully you felt about it. Even if you have not seen any major accident, you should talk about one. Pick some of the points from the below list to describe an accident:

1. It was a car accident/ bus accident/ train accident. 2. You were just passing by/ were in another transport while the accident occurred. 3. Everything happened all of a sudden and you were devastated to watch it. 4. You can also talk about a plane crash but for that mention that you watched it on TV. 5. If you live in a country where water transportations are available, you can talk about the boat accident due to the storm as well. 6. Describe how severely the accident caused damage. 7. Mention that due to the accident you were stuck there for a long and that you lent a helping hand. 8. Tell how bad you felt and what steps should be taken to prevent such unexpected and unbearable accidents. 9. If you were the victim of the accident, give details on how the accident occurred and how you were safe. 10. Tell that you had a hard time forgetting this mournful experience. 11. Regarding the part ‘how the accident affected you’ say about your feeling of the unsafety of the road, how uncertain our lives are, what changes occurred to your life after the accident.

Part 3: Details Discussion:

Q. What should be done to reduce road accidents? Answer: In my opinion, awareness and responsibility are the two important elements to tackle this crucial matter. In particular, by raising awareness people will become well-informed and it might lead to the decline of road accidents. This could occur with the intervention by governing bodies, family, school and even campaigners. Accountability is also an essential characteristic. There are many cases, especially in Europe, when people go out and drink and after that, they drive back home on their own. Terrible accidents can happen under the influence of alcohol and we should underline that most of the time not only drunk drivers are getting killed but also sober drivers and innocent people are becoming victims who are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Apart from that, the traffic system should be improved and the accident-prone roads should be reconstructed. Driving offences should be taken seriously and rigid tests and checking should be in place before giving someone a driving license.

Q. Who should be responsible for the accidents? Answer: First and foremost, drivers have a great responsibility for any accident. Many factors such as alcohol, fake driving license, excessive speed, and lack of road safety contribute to the dramatic increase in road accidents. However, drivers are aware of these considerations so there is a matter of irresponsibility and whoever drives a car should be more responsible. In addition, parents play an important role as well, because they allow their children to drive despite the fact that they’re underage and incapable of driving safely and consciously. Furthermore, there are some cases where accidents are caused by a faulty mechanism of cars. These cases aren’t that common, but when it happens, the fatal is inevitable. So car manufacturers and distributors in some cases should be responsible as well.

Q. What damages do you think occurs when an accident takes place? Answer: The most dangerous thing that happens in an accident is the loss of human lives. Due to unpleasant and unexpected accidents, many people pass away and this is the most terrible thing that could happen. Going further, the victims of road accidents often suffer minor or heavy injuries and the latter entails a long time of hospitalisation, with potential permanent damages. Vehicle damage is a further loss, as in most cases cars, motorcycles and all the other vehicles involved, end up completely mangled. Furthermore, the family members of the victims suffer from unbearable losses and the outcome often brings catastrophe to those family members.

Narrative Essay - An Accident

A Green Light Signal’s - Everyone Must Leave...

I still possess a picture of my grandma on the beach at Phuket, Thailand, dressed in her grey kuftan and white dupatta and the wind blowing against her and she, opening out her hands as if waiting to embrace it. Every time I take a look at this picture it reminds me of the horrific incident that followed it. Thinking of that incident I feel my pulse race up and a rage of fury in my heart but before any more of these emotions, water starts to runs down my cheek.

After leaving from Phuket my grandma took my sister and me to her brother’s house in Kolkata. My parents on the other hand went back to Mumbai. We spent two wonderful weeks with my grandma’s brother (who is just a year older to my dad) and his two sons (both of them were around my age), Varun and Vaibhav.

My sister and me had to depart as our vacation had finally come to an end and our new school year was about to start. My grandma, who only met her brother once a year, wanted to spend more time with them so my sister and I were to travel back alone.

I have a distinct image of the accident. My sister and I were on the way to the airport to catch our flight. My grandma, her brother and her aunt were coming along see us off. We were all seated in a navy blue Maruti 800. My uncle driving and my grandma on the front seat with my sister. My grandma’s aunt seated beside me alongside the luggage at the rear of the car. In comparison to the size of the car, it cannot hold 5 people and luggage. The car was purring along at a slow but steady speed. We were fortunate not to encounter any signals as we were in a hurry. The tables seemed to have turned and we stopped at a four way junction. We were waiting at a signal besides a carrier truck approximately 5 times the size of a delusion of a car. No other vehicle or person was present at 5 o’ clock in the morning. Then time seized to stop. I seemed like eternity. The signal turned green signalling the cars to go. To me suggesting that “all people must leave”. This incident reminded me of this very thought. We moved ahead. Everything appeared moved at the speed of the snail. Adrenaline released from my adrenal glands, making my sensory organs alert as though a fire alarm had gone off. At that very moment the truck took a sharp turn. Then as though someone had pressed the fast-forward button on a DVD player, from the right window I saw, the truck, coming onto us, with tremendous velocity, like a large wave approaching and engulfing a helpless child. I could only momentarily hear the shatter of windows pains and a shrieking cry of a child and before comprehending what had taken place, before I could recount what happened one of the luggage pieces knocked me out unconscious.

Join now!

I was woken by the sounds of loud calls and shrieking cries. Initially my vision was hazy and found myself looking out of a smashed car through a broken door - there was a huge gathering of people and a girl in the middle, in a pool of blood, whaling her lungs out., a person, eyes shut, precautiously but hurriedly being put into an ambulance and a her clothes stained. My head bulged at the sight and my I felt my heartbeat throbbing against my chest. I faintly remember a man approaching me but nothing beyond that.

This is a preview of the whole essay

The next thing that comes to my mind is waking up in a hospital bed besides my sister. To my horror, her head wrapped in bandages and she, fast asleep or, that is what I thought. My mother walked in, I still remember the worried look on her face but then suddenly she burst into tears and rushed out to embrace me. I wasn’t aware of the reason for such sudden emotions my mother was experiencing but welcomed the warm motherly hug and felt something was wrong.

I later found out that the windows had shattered and had gone into my sister forehead, missing her eyes my a few millimetres (0.7mm, I measured it). Whereas for my grandma her thigh bone had to be removed as it had been crushed into fine pieces and had to get a metal one surgically inserted and my uncle had fractured his hand. As for me, I had no mark on my body to truly show that this accident had happened.

I spent another two weeks in Kolkata until the bandages were removed, from both my grandma and sister.

This incident left my grandma crippled for the rest of her life. Though she leads as normal a life as possible, in her eyes you can see the pain she suffers with every step she takes. My sister was left with a 5 cm scar on the right side of her face, an ugly site on otherwise a very beautiful face. I am glad that I survived unhurt and further more that I didn’t loose any of my dear ones. As for the truck driver, he was never to be seen again. This incident almost envisaged my thoughts I experience every time I wait for a signal - a green light signal’s that everyone leaves.

Every time I am at the beach, I hear the waves crashing against the shore, I look back to see my grandma sitting on the beach chair unable to enjoy the activities she would have enjoyed doing, my eyes fill up with tears and my heart with anger. It feels as if she has lost half her soul in the accident and the other is crippled. If I were to find the person who did this I would never leave him. Whenever I think of him my heart beats against my chest as though a caged animal waiting to be released. This incident has had a drastic impact on my life and even more on others but has taught me a valuable lesson – “life’s too short, enjoy it to the fullest”.

How to write a car accident witness statement.

  • November 4, 2021

Witnesses to motor vehicle collisions can clear up issues of liability, establish the chain of events leading to a crash, and provide crucial details.

If you saw an accident, learning how to write a car accident witness statement can help you recognize what is and isn’t important to include in your write-up.

The Basics of Your Witness Statement

When you agree to go on the record about a crash, you need to provide your contact information. This includes your:

  • Phone number

If there are issues with an insurance claim or a victim files a lawsuit, a Long Island Personal Injury Lawyer or insurance adjuster may need to contact you for more information following your statement.

Describing the Accident

Car crashes are chaotic, and you may feel overwhelmed even as a witness. To start, focus on the basics like:

If you glanced at your phone or watch when the crash occurred, note the time. Describe the street or intersection where the accident happened, including if it was busy or deserted, whether there was construction, and if it was raining, sunny, or icy.

You may not know what will be important, so include what you can remember. Any details could be pivotal to understanding the accident’s cause. For instance, that large pothole that caused one car to blow a tire and strike another vehicle could be grounds for a lawsuit against the city ( GMU § 50-E ).

Questions That May Jog Your Memory of what Happened

You can sort through the rest of the crash by answering questions like:

  • Where were you in relation to the collision?
  • What first got your attention?
  • Who was moving where?
  • How did the drivers act and react?
  • Were there other witnesses?

You don’t have to worry about knowing the underlying reasons for the accident. Instead, focus on what you know happened. If there are gaps because you couldn’t see or don’t remember, that’s okay; don’t try to fill them in with your imagination.

Don’t Forget to Include What Happened After the Crash

Describing the aftermath of an accident is just as important as describing the collision itself when writing a car accident witness statement. Mention any of the following details if you noticed:

  • Behavior as people exited their vehicles
  • Appearance of injuries
  • Any property damage
  • Comments made by people involved

Maybe one of the drivers apologized for a specific action that caused the accident. Perhaps you saw someone limping. If you saw damage to vehicles or other property, try to be as specific as possible when describing it, such as angles or type of damage (broken glass, dents, jagged pieces, etc.).

Don’t try to fill in the blanks if you didn’t hear the full conversation. Don’t assume someone was hurt based on the damage to the vehicles. Focus on what you directly saw and heard.

What You don’t Say Is Also Important

If you’ve ever given a statement to an insurance company for an accident you were in, a lawyer may have advised you not to deviate much from basic facts. The same is true in how you write a statement after witnessing a car accident. Avoid including:

  • Assumptions

For example, if you saw a car swerve and hit another vehicle, you may assume the swerving car was 100% at fault. However, maybe you didn’t see the swerving car trying to avoid another negligent driver, or that it had a tire failure due to a manufacturing error that caused them to lose control.

Car accident lawyers , like the ones on our team at the Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP evaluate statements like yours alongside photographs, vehicle damage, medical records, police reports, and accident reconstruction. Leave the deductions to us.

Why Witness Statements Matter

In insurance claims and lawsuits, what you say in a car accident witness statement can help with:

  • Identifying liable parties
  • Determining if negligence was involved
  • Understanding contributing factors
  • Supporting a victim’s version of events
  • Fighting back against insurance companies

As an unbiased observer with no stake in the proceedings, you can report facts that could be essential to resolving a dispute. For example, an insurance company may argue that someone is not as injured as they claim. Your statement could be used in conjunction with other evidence to argue otherwise.

Holding Negligent Drivers Responsible

You can help uphold the law by being a witness. It is a crime in New York for someone to flee the scene of an accident that caused damage or injuries, per NY VAT § 600 .

If you saw that happen, you can provide evidence that could help track down a negligent driver who broke the law.

Study the types of questions that have been formulated based on the cue card and how to go about with your response:

Describe an accident

You should say:

  • Where did it occur?
  • What harm did it cause?
  • How did you feel about the accident?
  • And explain how dangerous this accident was?

Mishappenings occur, mostly without our influence or knowledge. Sometimes the people involved in accidents are lucky enough to survive the incident with minimal damage. However, in many cases, accidents lead to the loss of property and even human life. Although I have not witnessed many accidents with my own eyes, there was a time when I had seen the aftermath of a terrible road accident. One evening, as I was riding my motorcycle through the busy streets of central Kolkata, I came across a commotion on the road. It was tough to figure out what was going on due to all the hustle and bustle but also due to the constant honking of vehicles. Eventually, I asked a bystander and came to know that there had been an accident at the traffic signal.

[do_widget id=custom_html-22]

Although my parents, especially my father, have always advised me to avoid such disturbances on the road and mind my own business, this time I was more curious than usual to see what had happened as this accident occurred on a route that I take on a regular basis on my way to college. As I overheard people talking about what had happened, I figured out that it was a case of reckless driving. Two bikers were trying to race each other to the signal and had crashed into a car which halted at the red light. Although the accident was not fatal to anyone involved, one of the bikers had a horrifying leg injury. The car and the bikes were absolutely wrecked and there were broken vehicle parts scattered all over the road.

I have always been a responsible driver, especially when riding a motorcycle. There have been many similar motorbike accidents in my locality where people have sustained fatal injuries due to carelessness on the road. I felt terrible for all the people involved in the accident, especially for the car driver since he was not at fault to any degree.

Later on, after I reached home, my mother asked me about the accident since it was covered by a few local news channels. That’s when I came to know that the biker who had suffered the leg injury had to get his leg amputated.

Accidents are unwanted, and it sometimes causes severe damage to people who suffer from it. There was one such severe accident I witnessed a few months back while I was travelling by car from my office to home. The accident occurred when a bike collided with a car, and the bike rider died instantly. I was completely horrified by it.

It was approximately 5 p.m., and I was on my way home from my workplace as though it were any other working day. There were traffic jams on practically every road. I suddenly heard a number of people screaming across the road as I went on the flyover. Slowly, I made my way forward and noticed a huge crowd. I parked my car on the corner of the road out of curiosity to see why there were so many people gathered and screaming. I crossed the road and approached a man who was already there and asked why there were so many people there. He informed me that an accident occurred only 5 minutes ago. An SUV car driver was driving aggressively and, when he lost control of his speed, collided with a bike rider, who died on the spot. The car driver also attempted to flee the scene, but witnesses gathered and summoned the police and ambulance.

I was astonished when I learnt about the accident, and I’ll never forget seeing the motorbike rider’s corpse drenched in blood. I still can’t get that out of my head.

  • Horrified (adj) – filled with horror; extremely shocked. Eg : Diana was horrified by the size of the bill.
  • Astonished (adj) – greatly surprised or amazed.  Eg : Sam was astonished when he saw the news.
  • Drenched (verb) – wet thoroughly. Eg : Hari is drenched in sweat.
  • Collided (verb) – hit by accident when moving. Eg : The bus collided with the truck.
  • Summoned (verb) – ask to be present. Eg : Jiya, after witnessing her father’s deteriorating health, summoned the doctor.

Cue Card # 43: An accident you saw or witnessed

Ielts cue card/ candidate task card # 43, describe an accident you saw or witnessed..

You should say:

  • where the accident occurred
  • where you were then
  • who were affected by the accident

and explain how you felt about it.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

An accident is, well, is just an “accident’, and it can happen anytime and anywhere no matter how hard we try to avoid them. Of course, that’s easy to say but, watching an accident from close proximity or becoming a “helpless and unwilling” witness to it is totally different. But, that’s exactly what happened to me when I had to witness such a horrific and sad incident in my home city.

It was one rainy morning about 5 years ago when I was driving back to my own place after dropping my friend at a local airport. By the way, it was a two-lane highway with slow access roads connecting the highway from both sides of the highway. The road was busy as usual with a lot of traffics, but most of the vehicles were running slowly due to the unexpected heavy rain.

So, everything was going fine on the road until, suddenly, a fast-approaching 8-wheeled large truck tried to access the highway from my left side. I got a little scared just for a moment, but, I thought that the driver would come back to his sense and slow down his vehicle in order to avoid a terrible accident.

But, I am afraid that it was only wishful thinking as, unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened as I feared. The driver had to finally press his break really hard because that’s all he could do at that crunch moment (either because he was a new driver or just underestimated the risk or the speed) forcing his vehicle to “skid” from the access road and then eventually hitting few cars on the highway real badly, not only wrecking the cars but also injuring a couple of people seriously in the process.

I never really saw such an accident from such a close distance until that incident, and I felt really sad and scared after that for a while. I felt like it was bad enough to witness or learn about an accident when you were far away from it, but it was even worse when you knew that accident was about to take place, and yet, you just couldn’t do anything to stop it ahead of the time.

Legal Strategies for Handling Hit-and-Run Car Accident Cases in Carmel, Indiana

a car accident i witnessed essay

In Carmel, Indiana, unfortunately, cases of hit-and-run car accidents are all too prevalent. The possibility of such an incident can never be overlooked, and being prepared beforehand can make all the difference. Either way, taking legal action is par for the course, meaning hiring a legal professional after an auto accident in Carmel, Indiana, is a great idea.

Hit-and-run accidents can be incredibly frustrating and distressing for victims and their families. Dealing with the aftermath of a hit-and-run car accident raises various legal challenges that require careful consideration. This article will explore effective strategies for handling hit-and-run car crash claims in Carmel, Indiana , from a legal standpoint, providing guidance and support during this difficult time.

The Importance of Evidence After a Hit-and-Run in Carmel, Indiana

Gathering evidence is crucial in any car accident case to determine liability and seek compensation. However, the absence of a responsible party in hit-and-run cases makes this step particularly challenging. To increase the chances of identifying the perpetrator, victims or witnesses should immediately document all available details. These may include license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, eyewitness accounts, photos of the accident scene, and any other relevant information.

Witness Collaboration in Carmel, Indiana

Cooperating with witnesses could significantly impact an investigation’s outcome. Immediately after an accident, victims should attempt to gather contact information from any eyewitnesses present at the scene. Witness statements can strengthen your case by providing crucial details or observations that may assist law enforcement in locating the driver who fled.

Reporting to Indiana Law Enforcement

Promptly reporting a hit-and-run incident to law enforcement is essential to initiating an investigation. Even if limited information about the responsible party is available at the time of filing a report, it establishes an official record of the incident. Often, law enforcement agencies may request additional evidence or witness statements as they pursue leads.

Engaging an Experienced Attorney in Indiana

Due to its complexities and potential hurdles, seek help from a skilled attorney familiar with hit-and-run cases. Their expertise can provide invaluable guidance throughout the whole legal process, from filing insurance claims to pursuing civil action against unidentified drivers. Experienced attorneys understand how statutes of limitations apply in such cases and will ensure timely filings to protect victims’ rights.

Insurance Considerations

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) or Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) may prove vital in hit-and-run incidents. These types of coverage can help compensate victims by filling the gap left by the fleeing driver’s absence or insufficient insurance. Discuss the details with your attorney and insurance company to better understand how these policies apply to your case.

Social Media and Public Appeal

Leveraging social media platforms and public appeals has proven successful in identifying hit-and-run drivers in some cases. Victims or their families often take to social media, sharing details of the incident and requesting public support to locate the responsible party. Civilians that may have witnessed or captured evidence via dashcams or security cameras might come forward due to increased community awareness.

Civil Action

When law enforcement fails to identify or apprehend the responsible party, victims can still pursue civil action against unidentified drivers. While this process varies from one jurisdiction to another, it could involve filing a lawsuit against “John Doe” defendants, making claims against victims’ UM/UIM coverage, or pursuing claims through an accident compensation fund if available.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies

Building a relationship between attorneys representing hit-and-run victims and law enforcement agencies is vital for fostering effective cooperation. Attorneys often share any additional evidence they come across during their investigations with law enforcement authorities, who then build on it further. This partnership helps forensic experts analyze vehicles involved in an accident more scientifically.

Supporting Legislative Efforts

Another strategy employed by legal professionals in this area is advocating for enhanced legislation focused on reducing hit-and-run incidents. This involves supporting campaigns for stricter penalties, improved surveillance systems, and greater awareness about the consequences of leaving the scene of an accident.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in Carmel, Indiana, Can Be Challenging

While resolving hit-and-run auto accident cases in Carmel, Indiana, can seem daunting, there are strategic steps victims can take to pursue justice and compensation within the bounds of the law. Gathering evidence promptly, engaging an experienced attorney with knowledge of hit-and-run cases, and reporting the incident to law enforcement are crucial initial steps. Collaborating with witnesses, leveraging social media and public appeals, and understanding insurance coverage options can also strengthen your case.

In instances where the responsible party cannot be identified or apprehended, pursuing civil action against unidentified drivers is a viable option. Building a strong partnership between victims’ attorneys and law enforcement agencies facilitates cooperation in investigations. Additionally, supporting legislative efforts for stricter penalties and increased awareness about the consequences of leaving the scene of an accident enhances the fight against hit-and-run incidents.

Unexpected Witness Comes Forward after 2008 Iowa Car Crash Becomes Homicide Investigation

A father and son were questioned after 41-year-old mother Michele Davis left the marital home in search of a new chapter in life.

a car accident i witnessed essay

In 2008, detectives with the Des Moines Police Department (D.M.P.D.) in Iowa were called to what was initially believed to be a fatal car accident along an off-ramp on Interstate 235. However, a post-mortem examination would determine that the car’s sole occupant,  41-year-old mother Michele Davis, actually had injuries consistent with a homicide, a revelation explored in Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins .

Who was Michele Davis?

How to watch.

Watch  Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins  on Oxygen Saturdays at 8/7c and next day on Peacock . Catch up on the Oxygen app.

Des Moines-raised Michele Davis was the older sister of Todd and Rod Cosner, both of whom spoke to Killer Relationship. Rod Davis said Michele Davis was “definitely a free spirit” who loved mopeds and was fiercely protective of her two younger brothers.

“People wanted to be around her,” Michele Davis’ sister-in-law, Wendy Cosner, said . “She liked being the life of the party.”

The magnetic student married her high school sweetheart, Bill McClain, and by 1986, the young pair had a son, Bill McClain Jr. Although the new mother and father seemed to love one another, they separated before the child turned 2.

“They were most definitely like two kids playing house,” said Todd Cosner. “They struggled financially, not making a lot of money, the expense of having a baby, the stress of all of that took its toll.”

According to Bill McClain Jr., the divorce was amicable, and still in her early 20s, Michele Davis entered the dating scene. That’s when she met Randy Davis, a U.S. Marine who owned his own construction business. Between his two children — including a son, Josh Davis — the single parents moved in together as a blended family and married in 1991.

Michele Davis featured on Killer Relationship Episode 302

Michele Davis worked as a homemaker, and when a drunk driver killed the biological mother of Randy Davis’ children, she stepped in as a mother-like figure to her husband’s children and raised them like they were her own.

Things, however, weren’t always easy with the new family unit, especially between Michele Davis and her stepson and stepdaughter. “I just know that they tussled a few times over rules, over things that Michele didn’t want them to do,” according to Wendy Cosner.

A Marriage in Trouble

Stressors between the married couple peaked in 2001 in what Todd Cosner called “a housing crunch,” which forced Randy Davis to sell his construction business. It also prompted Michele Davis to enter the workforce, and she soon took a job with TMC Transportation in Des Moines and worked in the payroll department.

With Michele Davis bringing in money and Randy Davis’ career floundering, the tension between husband and wife escalated.

“More and more, everything had to be Randy’s way,” Rod Cosner told Killer Relationship . “There was no in-between.”

Michele Davis attempted to leave Randy Davis for the first time in 2004. However, according to loved ones, she was only away for a matter of days before the husband convinced her to return home. She stayed until after the kids were mostly out of the house, and in April 2008, she left once and for all.

Within hours, she’d moved into her own apartment.

“I think she did love him, but she just knew that she couldn’t stay there anymore,” said Bill McClain Jr.

Things between Michele Davis and her stepchildren only worsened when she filed for divorce and took some belongings and money, according to her brother.

“Her stepkids were upset with her,” said Todd Cosner. “They felt she had stolen from their father.”

Did Michele Davis die in a car accident?

On September 11, 2008, five months after moving out, Michele Davis was pronounced dead on the scene after her vehicle suddenly veered off-track along the interstate at 4:48 p.m., hitting multiple cars before flipping over on an off-ramp. But investigators, including Eric Hartman of the D.M.P.D.’s Traffic Unit, didn’t think the impact would have killed Michele Davis as it had.

“I’ve worked lots of fatals over the years,” Hartman told Killer Relationship . “I felt something was off.”

D.M.P.D. detectives Mike McTaggart, Dennis O’Donnell, and David Seybert were on the case, which became even more suspicious after the victim’s body was sent to the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office. The following day, experts found Michele Davis sustained a single, fatal gunshot wound from a small-caliber firearm that entered just behind her ear, turning the case into a homicide investigation.

At this point, investigators were unsure whether Michele Davis’ death was the result of road rage, a sniper, a stray bullet, or something else. They hoped to glean new clues when requesting potential video footage from the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Inside the vehicle were documents pertaining to the pending divorce, and according to Det. McTaggart, Michele Davis had a no-contact order against her estranged husband.

The Investigation

a car accident i witnessed essay

Relatives admitted that Randy Davis was “dragging his feet” with the divorce, but while the husband was thought to be controlling in the marriage, there was no evidence he was ever physically abusive toward his wife, or even owned a firearm.

Investigators soon turned their attention toward the victim’s stepson, Josh Davis, who admitted to being "upset" about Michele Davis not leaving quietly.

“Josh had recently got out of the Marine Corps, [and] at that point, lived with his father,” according to Det. McTaggart, who claimed that the son’s military background piqued detectives’ interest.

Josh Davis said that on the day of the homicide, he went to the mall with his sister before returning home at around 3:30 p.m. to watch T.V., according to an audio-taped interview between Josh Davis and Det. Seybert. He said his father came home at around 5:30 p.m.

The stepson admitted he “didn’t like” some of Michele Davis’ requests in light of the couple’s ongoing divorce proceedings. According to those close to the case, Michele Davis sought half of everything, including the house and pension funds.

For his part, Randy Davis said he was on the phone with his divorce attorney at 3:15 p.m. and returned home at around 3:45 p.m. He claimed Josh Davis came home around 5:00 p.m. before cooking. Soon, Randy Davis, whose interview was video-recorded and published by Killer Relationship — put an end to the interrogation and lawyered up.

“At that point, it’s trying to figure out who’s telling the truth and who’s not telling the truth,” said Det. Seybert.

Detectives narrow in on a killer

On Sept. 12, 2008, authorities obtained a search warrant for Randy and Josh Davis’ home. While there were no signs of a gun, detectives were struck by a cleaning kit for a .22-caliber rifle, a weapon that could have easily matched the one used to kill Michele Davis. They also searched Randy Davis’ red Ford F-150 pickup truck, which matched a vehicle witnesses said they saw driving “erratically” on the interstate just before the crash.

Despite the damning discoveries, at the time, there wasn’t enough for authorities to press charges.

The Iowa Department of Transportation handed over traffic images, and while there was no video, they revealed grainy still shots taken every few seconds, capturing a red Ford F-150 speeding on the highway and eventually catching up to Michele Davis’ vehicle.

Finer details, including the driver’s identification and license plate number, could not be determined.

Retracing the victim’s movements from when she left her job at 4:30 p.m., detectives also found video footage from a local car wash.

“We see Michele Davis’ vehicle, and several cars later, we see the red pickup truck,” said Det. Seybert. “It’s amazing.”

Cell phone data placed Randy Davis’ cell phone near his estranged wife’s place of employment at the time she left work, contradicting his previous statements to the police when he said he was at home.

An unexpected witness comes forward

Michele and Randy Davis featured on Killer Relationship Episode 302

On Sept. 19, 2008 — more than a week after Michele Davis’ death — Det. McTaggart said he had an unexpected call from his sergeant., stating that Josh Davis planned to come into the police station with his attorney for a new interview. In his videotaped interview with detectives, Josh Davis confessed he knew more about his stepmother’s death than what he’d previously stated, as obtained by Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins .

“When I came home from my sister’s, my dad’s truck was in the driveway,” said Josh Davis. “When I came in, he come down and he said, ‘I wish that you didn’t come home.’”

The son said he came home shortly before the shooting and tried to stop his father from leaving the house with a .22-caliber rifle.

“He said he couldn’t take it anymore because he was gonna have nothing,” Josh Davis told authorities. “I held him up against the wall and told him he didn’t want to do anything stupid. And then he got in his truck and left.”

The son said there was no sign of the gun when Randy Davis returned home at around 5:30 p.m.

The weapon used to kill Michele Davis was never recovered.

“That’s when he told me he did it,” Josh Davis continued to investigators. “He didn’t tell me how, just that he did it.”

Detectives were inclined to believe the son, especially since he seemed sincere, and because Randy Davis had already lied to authorities about his whereabouts, as proven by cell phone data. It was enough for authorities to charge Randy Davis with first-degree murder.

Det. Seybert called Josh Davis’ willingness to come forward an “act of courage.”

In 2010, Randy Davis eventually pleaded down to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years behind bars. According to records reviewed by Oxygen.com , he will be eligible for parole in 2043.
