Short Essay on An Accident I Saw ( 100 to 120 words )

Every day I read about accidents in the newspapers. But it was only yesterday that I had the misfortune of witnessing one. It was eight o’clock at night. I was returning home from the office in an auto-rickshaw. As we crossed the Green Park Red Light, a red Swift car speeded past us. It was racing ahead of us. Suddenly a man tried to run across the road. He miscalculated the speed of the red Swift. And before the car could apply breaks, the man was hit and thrown off the road. The car however speeded away. Luckily the man was not badly hurt. He was taken to the nearby doctor. After the first aid, he was sent home.

Essay on An Accident I Have Seen ( 250 to 300 words )

An Accident you have Witnessed Accidents on the roads are a common occurrence these days. Some are killed. Many are injured or maimed. The increase in vehicles, poor condition of the roads, rash driving, and non-observance of traffic rules are responsible for the ever-increasing accidents. So it is important for us to learn to use the roads properly and safely.

Last week I witnessed a horrifying accident near my school . I shall never forget it for a long time. The road in front of my school is very narrow. It is always crowded particularly in the afternoons when school gets over. Sometimes a policeman is there to control the traffic but generally chaos reigns.

It was Monday. The school had just finished. The road was crowded as usual. The students were running across the road to get into buses and cars to go home. Just then I saw a boy run across the road. All of a sudden I heard a loud scream and the screech of brakes. The boy was knocked down by a car. He lost consciousness and there was the blood rushing out from a cut on his head. Soon a large crowd gathered around the boy. Someone in the crowd tied a bandage around the cut. The boy was rushed to a hospital. Many people surrounded the driver of the car and began abusing him. Fortunately, a policeman arrived and calmed things down. A case was registered and the driver was taken to the police station. Slowly the crowd started dispersing. Since that day I am careful in using the roads.

Narrative Essay on Road Accident I Witnessed

Accidents on the road can be life-altering experiences, often leaving a lasting impact on those who witness them. One such incident that I witnessed a few years ago still lingers in my mind, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. This essay recounts the details of that harrowing event, aiming to shed light on the consequences of negligence and the paramount importance of vigilance while on the road.

The Day of the Accident

It was a bright and sunny afternoon in mid-July. The streets were bustling with people, and the air was filled with the usual cacophony of honking cars, chattering pedestrians, and the distant hum of city life. I was on my way home from school, walking along the sidewalk, lost in thoughts of the day’s events and the homework that awaited me.

As I approached a busy intersection, the traffic light turned green, signaling for pedestrians to cross. I waited for a few seconds, allowing a car to pass before stepping onto the zebra crossing. What happened next unfolded in a matter of seconds but felt like an eternity. A speeding motorcycle, attempting to beat the red light, swerved into view. The rider, realizing too late that he couldn’t make it, attempted to brake but lost control.

The motorcycle skidded across the road, heading straight for a pedestrian about to reach the other side. In a desperate attempt to avoid a direct collision, the rider veered to the left but ended up crashing into a nearby car. The impact was so severe that the rider was thrown off his bike, landing several feet away, motionless.

The Immediate Aftermath

The scene that followed was one of chaos and panic. The sound of the crash had drawn the attention of everyone nearby. Pedestrians screamed, and drivers honked, creating a cacophony of noise. I stood frozen, my heart racing, as I processed what I had just witnessed.

Several people rushed towards the injured rider and the occupants of the car, trying to offer assistance. I remember the overwhelming sense of helplessness as I watched them dial emergency numbers, their voices urgent and shaky. The driver of the car, visibly shaken but uninjured, stepped out to check on the rider, who lay still on the pavement.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens filled the air as an ambulance and police cars arrived at the scene. The medical team quickly attended to the rider, who was fortunately still alive but seriously injured. The police cordoned off the area, redirecting traffic and starting their preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.

Reflections on the Incident

As the adrenaline faded and I continued my journey home, the gravity of what I had witnessed began to sink in. It was a sobering reminder of how quickly a normal day could turn tragic due to a moment of carelessness. The rider’s decision to speed and beat the red light had not only endangered his life but also those of others around him.

This incident highlighted the critical importance of road safety measures, such as obeying traffic signals, wearing helmets, and driving within speed limits. It also underscored the unpredictable nature of road accidents and the need for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant at all times.

In the days that followed, I found myself more cautious and aware of my surroundings while walking or riding in a vehicle. The accident served as a powerful lesson on the consequences of negligence on the road and the collective responsibility we share in preventing such tragedies.

The road accident I witnessed was a stark reminder of the thin line between life and death and the impact of our choices behind the wheel. It taught me the importance of road safety, not just as a set of rules to follow, but as a commitment to protecting ourselves and others. As we navigate the roads of life, let us do so with caution and care, mindful of the precious lives that depend on our vigilance and responsibility. This narrative serves as a call to action for all of us to prioritize safety and make our roads safer for everyone.

Short Essay on an Accident I Saw

On a regular day, I was returning from school. It was a hot summer day, and the road was clean and traffic-free. Suddenly, listen to a loud sound: a bike hits an SUV car, and the biker falls onto the road.

Immediately, I ran to the biker. He was without a helmet and heavily injured in the head. Meanwhile, the driver of the car came out and started scolding the biker. I stopped the driver and said, This is the time to help, not fight. I requested that he call an ambulance a few minutes later to the hospital.

This accident experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. This experience taught me the importance of helmets and road safety.

Long Essay on an Accident I Saw

The time was early morning on winter’s foggy day. The road was fully covered by fog, and there was not any traffic on the road.

I woke up early that day for my study. I was studying at my table when I suddenly heard the loud sound of someone shouting. I opened my window and saw that somebody had crashed his car into the wall beside the road.

Immediately I ran to that car, and two of my neighbours reached the car, and we together brought the driver outside of the car. He was bleeding from his head and had several other injuries to his body.

The driver had not worn a seatbelt, and that led to several injuries. I called an ambulance within 5 minutes, and it reached and took him to the hospital. In the evening, the police took his car out.

I remember this terrible experience from that accident. It happened so fast that I just can’t believe it in my eyes. This accident reminds me about road safety and the importance of consciousness when driving.

Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I lye on my side, sandwiched between the cold, soft dirt and the hot, slick metal of the car. The weight of the car pressed down on the lower half of my body with monster force. It did not hurt, my body was numb. All I could feel was the car hood’s mass stamping my body father and farther into the ground. My lungs felt pinched shut and air would neither enter nor escape them. My mind was buzzing. What had just happened? In the distance, on that cursed road, I saw cars driving by completely unaware of what happened, how I felt. I tried to yell but my voice was unheard. All I could do was wait. Wait for someone to help me or wait to die.

The third maddening buzz of my alarm woke me as I groggily slid out of bed to the shower. It was the start of another routine morning, or so I thought. I took a shower, quarreled with my sister over which clothes she should wear for that day and finished getting myself ready. All of this took a little longer than usual, not a surprise, so we were running late. We hopped into the interior of my sleek, white Thunderbird and made our way to school.

With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind hills in the middle of the right lane was a dead deer. Without any thought, purely by instinct I pulled the wheel of the car to the left and back over to the right. No big deal but I was going fast. The car swerved back to the left, to the right, to the left. Each time I could feel the car scratching the earth with its side. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed tight, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.

I opened my eyes to see the black road in the distance above me. I could feel the cold ground on the side of my body. I couldn’t move and couldn’t understand why. It had happened so quickly. I lay there until my mind comprehended what had happened. I was wedged between the hood of the car and the dirt. The car rustled, every movement of the car pierced my body. It was my sister. She was okay. I could see her slowly crawl out of the back seat window then tear away. I opened my mouth to yell her name but air failed to escape my lips. Gasping like a fish out of water, I dreamily lied there until someone would help.

I heard an uneasy voice in the distance, “Betsy! Oh my God! Betsy!” It was my dad. I was disappointed and embarrassed of myself. I had let him down. My voice yelled for help as my heart beat rapidly with fear and relief. The car jiggled. I could feel the weight of the car lift slowly off me. For the first time, intense pain struck my lower half. “Crawl out of there,” someone yelled to me. I pushed against the ground with all my might but I couldn’t move. The pain was excruciating, nevertheless I could not feel the lower half of my body. I felt paralyzed. Still struggling to move, I felt strong arms glide around my shoulders and under my armpits. They drug me out of the way of the falling car. My dad had saved me. As I lye on the weed covered ground, several people surrounded me. I dreamily looked around and saw my sister sitting Indian style next to me, plastered in blood. She had run barefoot to the nearest house to call 911 and my dad. She was my angel. We sat there in shock. Was it just a dream? Everything had happened so fast. Every minute lying on that dirt felt like a lifetime. Strangers kept poking every inch of my body and prodding me with questions that I didn’t have answers to. Finally, the ambulance arrived. They rushed over to my sister and I. They asked me a number of questions that I obliviously answered and started to get me ready to go. With a bright orange brace around my neck they slowly pushed me onto a stiff backboard. Each tiny movement they made pierced my lower half like a knife. We finally made it into the ambulance and made our way to the hospital.

My sister and I were sent to Delta Hospital. My sister was all right. She had stitches in her eye, head and elbow. I was relieved that she was not severely injured. I don’t know what I would have done if something extremely bad had happened to her. I was sent to the Denver Memorial Hospital, where I went under surgery that same night around midnight. A plate was put on my hipbones to help them stay together. I was in the hospital for six days and in a wheel chair for around eight weeks.

I have now realized how precious life really is and that it can be taken away in a single minute. This is even easier when you are driving a car. One little mishap can result in extreme injury or even death. I am lucky that my sister is all right and that I lived. I will never forget that moment when I was lying on the ground, disappointment flooding my mind, waiting.

Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate reality of our lives. The daily news reports generally contain at least one incident of a road accident. Depending on the severity of the accident, the number of casualties and the damage done can be concerning. Road accidents cost a lot of lives and property damage. To avoid accidents, everyone should be more careful and vigilant on the streets. As a driver, one must be extra cautious because one mistake from the driver can cost the lives of innocent others.

The Road Accident That I Experienced

I remember the first road accident I witnessed. It had changed my perspective on life. I still remember the date and the day very intricately. It was the 20th of September 2016. I was returning home from tuition. My mother had come to pick me up. It was around 6 o'clock in the evening. When we reached the bus stand, we saw a huge crowd of people at a few feet of distance from the bus stop. There were men in the crowd who were screaming in the regional language.

At first, we couldn't understand what was going on. After a while of careful overhearing of the conversation of everyone near us, we could understand that there was an accident. So to get to the bottom of it we asked a shopkeeper what had  happened. He told us that indeed an accident took place a while ago. He then went on to give us a detailed event of what happened. According to him, a pedestrian was crossing the road. A passenger's bus had hit him. The man was left bleeding on the street. The people in the area then cornered the bus and assaulted the bus driver. The police were called to the scene. As for the pedestrian, when the police came over, they declared the man dead. However, as a formality, they sent him to the hospital but according to the shopkeeper, there is not much hope for a miracle.

This incident made me realize how fragile life is. It could very well have been me or my loved one instead of that man.  The man was not at fault as he was following the rules, but because of the ignorance of another careless man, he had to lose his life. This incident has left a scar on my mind which still bothers me at times.

Road accidents are a fairly tragic event that has dangerously increased in numbers nowadays. Today, there are more automobiles on the streets than ever. Some say that this increase in the number of automobiles is the reason the number of road accidents is increasing too. Some others say that people nowadays have become more careless, this leads to a higher number of accidents due to carelessness. Another problem that is very prevalent in India is the lack of civic sense in people. People in the cities of India do not strictly adhere to the traffic rules; some people also lack the basic road sense. On top of that, certain parts of the city have narrow roads. All these add up to increase road accidents.

Description of Road Accident:

Road accidents are scary for our lives. In recent times it has increased more. Every morning when you open a newspaper every second or third page will have news related to road accidents. The reason for increasing road accidents is due to the fact that people are buying more automobiles and have also become careless while driving vehicles.

Many a time we have seen that people are just avoiding following traffic rules. Especially in metropolitan cities, people are more careless while driving vehicles which ultimately lead to road accidents.

The foremost causes of road accidents in such metropolitan areas can be narrow roads and roads with potholes.

Thus a road accident damages the lives of life and material. People should be very careful while driving or walking on the road.

It is also seen that walking on the road is also equally dangerous because of heavy traffic it can also be harmful to the people walking on the road. Hence, such people should walk on the side of the road or walk on footpaths.

Road Accident Incident:

Once I was coming back from my office at that time when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my co-worker and it was around 6 o’clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two groups of people but then after reaching the spot, we found that an accident had taken place.

After talking with the people present there, we came to know that a man who was crossing the road met with an accident while crossing the road. A truck passing by hit him leaving him with serious injuries. The man was lying on the ground bleeding and people were calling for an ambulance, plus they also informed the police about the incident.

Subsequently, the police arrived and caught the driver of the truck as people had already taken a hold of the driver. During the investigation with the driver, the cops came to know that the driver was drunk and was driving the vehicle. Later on, cops detained him and took the injured person to the nearest hospital, and took a statement from the injured person. The driver was released later based on the statement given by the person. That incident made me realize how precious our lives are and we must be very careful when we are walking on the road, on foot, or driving a car.

  Prevention from Road Accidents:

There are some most important points that every person should keep in mind while driving or walking or crossing the road. These points are as follows:

Drive within the prescribed speed limit.

Don’t drink or smoke while driving.

Follow all the traffic rules as they are for our safety.

Never use mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Always drive in the proper lane.

While riding a bike always wear a helmet.

I remember the day as if it were yesterday. My mother and I were in the car on our way to a family member’s house- just like any other day. We were driving down the main road in my town when the car was t-boned by another car that had run a red light. Our Honda Accord was smashed to pieces in the middle of the intersection. My mother was bleeding and the front of the car had crashed on top of my legs- I couldn’t feel either leg, but at the same time, tremendous pain shot through my body, not to mention fear. I looked over at the car that hit us and it was just as demolished- the front of the car was smoking; honestly, I feared that one of the vehicles might combust.

I tried to get out of my vehicle, but I could not open the door. The impact from the crash caused too much damage and my injured mother and I had no choice but to wait for the EMTs to arrive to help us get out of the vehicle.

Several cop cars, two ambulances and a fire truck rushed to the scene. The doors to our car were pried open with the jaws of life as the man who hit us was placed onto a gurney and lifted into the ambulance. I don’t know what his condition was, but if it even paled in comparison to the way his car looked after the accident, he was in serious medical condition.

When my mother was removed from our vehicle, she was treated by EMS workers for cuts and scrapes associated with the accident, but the EMS technicians said that she would be fine. I wasn’t as lucky.

When the doors on my side of the car were pried away, it revealed to the medical help that I had broken at least one of my legs, if not both. I was carefully removed from the vehicle and placed in a wheelchair then brought to the ambulance. The EMTs drove me to the local hospital where they took X-rays of both of my legs.

I waited anxiously in my bed for the results of the X-rays as the nurses cleaned up my cuts from the shattered glass. My mother sat by my bedside praying over me, but most of me was just thankful that I was the one in the hospital bed instead of her.

The doctor came into the room with my X-ray results. As an athlete and an overall busy person who relies on my legs heavily, I feared for the worst. Luckily, it could have been worse. The doctor revealed to me that I shattered my right knee but that my left leg did not break in the impact. Although I would have to undergo intense surgery and physical rehabilitation to repair my right knee, the doctor assured me that I would be walking fine again within several months. It wasn’t the greatest news I had ever received, but through my eyes, my mother and I were okay, and I was grateful.

The accident changed me. The surgery was difficult but I got through it with the support of my family. I may have walked out of the hospital with a broken right knee, but I also carried with me a greater appreciation for my family, as well as my life. In the accident I realized the preciousness of every moment and ultimately the car crash changed my life for the better.

Since the accident I have become closer to God, my family and my friends. I understand the importance of what true love is and what it means to savor each moment. My rehabilitation for my knee might have been a physical healing process, but I also went through an emotional rehabilitation, where my spirit healed from the accident.

I could have died that day. Worse, I could have lost my best friend and my mother that day. I carry the accident with me in my mind every day- it is my constant reminder to cherish life and appreciate every moment. I have a set of rosary beads that I know hang off the rear view window of my own car, as my personal reminder of that day. When I look at those beads, I think of my mother, I think of God, and I am truly grateful for being where I am today.

For a long time I struggled to look at my glass as half full after the accident. I wanted reasons for questions that had no answers. Why us? Why me? Why my knee? For months I took those questions and fostered them into hostility.

Today is different though. Today I carry my scars like badges of honor. Yes I did get in a horrible car accident, and here I am today. Clearly I wasn’t meant to die that day- and I know that ultimately I am on this earth to serve a larger purpose. Instead of being ashamed of my scars, today I look at them as markers of strength- proof that I can overcome anything. That accident may have broken my knee but it didn’t break my spirit. If anything, it made my spirit stronger and helped me get to where I am today.

Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

In the IELTS Speaking section, one of the most common question types is the Cue Card Speaking prompt. The IELTS Cue Card topics will prompt you to formulate a response and speak on the given topic. To attempt this question, you must narrow down the essential questions on the given topic to answer within the given time. Consider the sample Cue Card below. Study the types of questions that have been formulated based on the cue card and how to go about with your response:

Describe an accident

You should say:

  • Where did it occur?
  • What harm did it cause?
  • How did you feel about the accident?
  • And explain how dangerous this accident was?

Sample Answer 1

Mishappenings occur, mostly without our influence or knowledge. Sometimes the people involved in accidents are lucky enough to survive the incident with minimal damage. However, in many cases, accidents lead to the loss of property and even human life. Although I have not witnessed many accidents with my own eyes, there was a time when I had seen the aftermath of a terrible road accident. One evening, as I was riding my motorcycle through the busy streets of central Kolkata, I came across a commotion on the road. It was tough to figure out what was going on due to all the hustle and bustle but also due to the constant honking of vehicles. Eventually, I asked a bystander and came to know that there had been an accident at the traffic signal.

[do_widget id=custom_html-22]

Although my parents, especially my father, have always advised me to avoid such disturbances on the road and mind my own business, this time I was more curious than usual to see what had happened as this accident occurred on a route that I take on a regular basis on my way to college. As I overheard people talking about what had happened, I figured out that it was a case of reckless driving. Two bikers were trying to race each other to the signal and had crashed into a car which halted at the red light. Although the accident was not fatal to anyone involved, one of the bikers had a horrifying leg injury. The car and the bikes were absolutely wrecked and there were broken vehicle parts scattered all over the road.

I have always been a responsible driver, especially when riding a motorcycle. There have been many similar motorbike accidents in my locality where people have sustained fatal injuries due to carelessness on the road. I felt terrible for all the people involved in the accident, especially for the car driver since he was not at fault to any degree.

Later on, after I reached home, my mother asked me about the accident since it was covered by a few local news channels. That’s when I came to know that the biker who had suffered the leg injury had to get his leg amputated.

Sample Answer 2

Accidents are unwanted, and it sometimes causes severe damage to people who suffer from it. There was one such severe accident I witnessed a few months back while I was travelling by car from my office to home. The accident occurred when a bike collided with a car, and the bike rider died instantly. I was completely horrified by it.

It was approximately 5 p.m., and I was on my way home from my workplace as though it were any other working day. There were traffic jams on practically every road. I suddenly heard a number of people screaming across the road as I went on the flyover. Slowly, I made my way forward and noticed a huge crowd. I parked my car on the corner of the road out of curiosity to see why there were so many people gathered and screaming. I crossed the road and approached a man who was already there and asked why there were so many people there. He informed me that an accident occurred only 5 minutes ago. An SUV car driver was driving aggressively and, when he lost control of his speed, collided with a bike rider, who died on the spot. The car driver also attempted to flee the scene, but witnesses gathered and summoned the police and ambulance.

I was astonished when I learnt about the accident, and I’ll never forget seeing the motorbike rider’s corpse drenched in blood. I still can’t get that out of my head.

  • Horrified (adj) – filled with horror; extremely shocked. Eg : Diana was horrified by the size of the bill.
  • Astonished (adj) – greatly surprised or amazed.  Eg : Sam was astonished when he saw the news.
  • Drenched (verb) – wet thoroughly. Eg : Hari is drenched in sweat.
  • Collided (verb) – hit by accident when moving. Eg : The bus collided with the truck.
  • Summoned (verb) – ask to be present. Eg : Jiya, after witnessing her father’s deteriorating health, summoned the doctor.

Narrative Essay About Car Accident

Narrative Essay On A Car Accident

Have you ever been in a car accident? Let me tell you, every accident is different. No-body knows how an accident will happen or the outcome of an accident. All accidents are defined by the severity. All accidents impact a person. Nobody understands an impact of an accident on a person until it happens to them. I remember the first time I got in a car accident. I was as scared as a little kid when it happened. I was only a sophomore. I had just got my license two months before my accident. People always joked about me getting in car accidents because everyone thought I was a bad driver. However, this car accident was not my fault. I did not hit anyone. I was not hit with air bags, thankfully. I was not sure if I hit my head or not. I was confused…

The Car Accident

It was one of the most terrifying days of my life, the day of my car accident. Disappointment, disbelief, and fear filled my mind as I was lying on my side. I was sandwiched between the cold dirt and the hot metal of the car. The weight of the car was pressed down on the lower half of my body with monster force. It did not hurt, my body was numb. All I could feel was the hood of the car stamping my body farther and farther into the ground. My lungs felt pinched and air would neither enter nor escape them. My mind was buzzing. Where is my brother? What is my father going to think? In the distance, on that cursed road, I saw cars driving by completely unaware of what had happened, or how I felt. I tried to yell but my voice was unheard. I was waiting, waiting for someone to help me, or waiting to die.…

What to Do If You Witness a Car Accident & How to Help

Updated January 4, 2022 . AmFam Team

If you just saw a car accident, you may be wondering what to do as a witness. If you’re currently next to an accident scene, Googling this article on your phone and wondering how to respond to a car accident — we’ve got you covered. First step, take a deep breath. Witnessing a car accident can be unsettling, so ground yourself before helping others.

Tips for Handling an Accident with an Uninsured Driver

Keep yourself safe if you just saw a car accident.

If you're driving and you witness an accident in front of you, make sure you pull over to a safe area. Try to be far enough away from the accident to leave room for emergency vehicles, and to ensure that you're not in any danger. Next, put on your hazard lights. Only exit your car if it's safe. If you're on a busy highway, it's probably best if you remain in your vehicle. And, if the cars involved are smoking, be sure to mention that when calling emergency services.

a man making a call after a car accident

Consider Calling 911 After You Witnessed an Accident

It’s normal to wonder how to respond to a car accident and if you should call 911. The National Emergency Number Association (Opens in a new tab) recommends that if you are unsure of whether or not the situation you witnessed is an emergency, you should call 911 and let the call taker determine if emergency assistance is needed. If you do call 911, be prepared to describe the scene, and give your location. Again, make sure your car is in park before you use your cell phone.

If You Feel Comfortable, Offer the Accident Victims Support

If you feel it's safe to get closer to the scene of the accident, head over to see how you might be able to help. You may be able to provide aid by:

  • First asking the victim if they are hurt or need assistance
  • Offering your phone so the victims can call relatives or friends
  • Setting up road flares from your car emergency kit to block off the accident area

If you see someone hurt, do not attempt to move them, since that could make their injuries worse. To ensure that those injured receive proper first aid treatment, wait for the authorities to arrive.

a police officer taking a statement

Stay on the Scene and Offer a Statement to Police

You can help the authorities and those involved by giving an account of what you witnessed. Or, if someone is hurt or scared, you can act as a source of comfort until someone else arrives. Keep in mind that once the police arrive you may need to provide your contact details to them in case there’s any follow up questions after the accident.

Be Cautious as a Witness to an Accident

In more tense situations, especially if someone was driving inappropriately or recklessly and caused the accident, the victim will benefit from you giving a statement to the police as a witness.

Your presence might also help to defuse a possible argument between the drivers, or prevent someone from trying to leave the scene. Just be mindful of your own safety, and try to stay calm.

Stay Protected from the Unexpected with Car Insurance

How you act in those pivotal first few minutes after a car accident can have a meaningful impact on both the victims and the emergency response team. You can make a big difference.

Before an accident happens, be sure you’ve got the right coverage in place to protect you, your loved ones and your finances. Our tips on customizing your car insurance can help. Connect with your agent to review your coverage or get a quote today.

How to Describe an Accident in English

describe an accident

Many of us experienced accidents (car, bus, bike, etc.) that probably caused property damage and bodily injuries. Sometimes we are the victims or the witnesses. However, we need to describe the accident to law enforcement agencies, our friends or relatives, or insurance agencies. If you wonder how to do it, this post is for you.

To describe an accident, you must identify the type of accident, such as a collision, head-on collision, car crash, pile-up, etc., as well as the time, place, and reason. To explain how bad the accident was, you can use adjectives such as fatal, severe, frightful, terrible, tragic, sad, dreadful, horrible, etc.

According to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 30 thousand crashes, almost 2 million injuries, and 4 million property damages occur annually in the USA. NHTSA identifies some issues related to risky driving that cause accidents in the USA, and they are:

  • Drunk driving
  • Drug-impaired driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Drowsy driving

I expect all my readers to drive safely and take all safety measures while on the road. Whenever you experience any accident as a driver, passenger, or witness, inform the local authority as early as possible and describe the accident.

If you wonder how to do it, here I present some WH questions that you can consider while describing an accident to someone:

  • Where did the accident happen?
  • When did the accident occur?
  • How did the accident happen?
  • What damages did it cause?

Well! To describe an accident, you must talk about the location, time, reason, and damage it caused. Let’s see how to talk about them.

describe an accident

It’s crucial to talk about the location of the incident while describing an accident. You must identify and describe the specific location precisely. You can mention some landmarks to help someone easily understand the place you are talking about.

Here are some sentences that you can use to describe where the accident occurred:

  • The accident took place near the national park.
  • The mishap happened in front of the grocery shop in our neighborhood.
  • The accident occurred right before my school.
  • The collision occurred on my way to work near Walmart.
  • I witnessed a car crash yesterday on my way to my uncle’s house in Atlanta city.
  • The accident I saw yesterday in the intersection was terrible.

While describing an accident, mentioning the time is as important as the place. No matter who you share the experience with, i.e., police, insurance agent, friends, or family, you must identify the time. You can use the following expressions to describe the time of an accident.

  • The accident took place in the afternoon. I was coming back from the office then.
  •  It was around 5 a.m. I witnessed the most tragic car crash while driving from New Jersey to New York.
  • A terrible accident occurred last Friday at noon in front of my shop. I was so frightened seeing that.

describe an accident

Explaining the reason behind any accident is very important, especially when describing an accident to the law enforcement or insurance company. It would help if you honestly told them how the accident happened. Give them accurate information so that the wrongdoer gets punished and the victim gets compensated.

Here are some expressions to help you explain the reasons behind the accident.

  • While rounding the corner , the driver drove straight into another car.
  • I lost control while turning and crashed.
  • There was a head-on collision since the other car was coming from the opposite direction .
  • I couldn’t notice the other car on the wrong side, and we collided.
  • I saw him driving at 80mph in a 40mph area and colliding with another while turning.
  • He suddenly pushed the brake , and there was a pile-up.
  • He was running so recklessly that it seemed he was drunk driving.
  • A pedestrian suddenly started running to cross the road and went under my car.
  • I was rolling through the intersection , and the bus hit the side of my car.

describe an accident

Any accident, big or small, leaves some damage. Sometimes there are fatalities, injuries, or property damages. While describing an accident, you must talk about the consequences of the accident. Let’s see some example sentences that well describe the effects of an accident.

  • The driver was utterly shaken, but thank God! He was unhurt.
  • There were no fatalities, but a few passengers were taken to the hospital with major injuries.
  • The driver was rescued alive from the bus with some minor injuries.
  • The truck ran over the car.
  • We are fortunate that there were no injuries even after such a horrible accident.
  • It was a fatal bus accident. Many students died on the spot.

We care about the life of our near ones as much as we do about ours. Hence, you need to be able to suggest people maintain safety measures in English.

Here are some general safety tips you can give to someone in English:

  • Always wear seat belts and other safety gear. Who knows! It can save you from injuries.
  • Don’t break traffic rules. Following rules is crucial to avoiding accidents.
  • Drive with complete attention to your action and your surroundings.
  • Never assume about any vehicle’s move or driver’s action.
  • Ensure the best use of your indicator lights, follow the indicators of other vehicles, and communicate with the other drivers with them.
  • Don’t use your cell phone while driving. If needed, stop the vehicle somewhere safe and do what you want to.
  • Never rush or surprise the drivers around you with sudden moves.
  • Check your vehicle’s condition before you start driving.
  • Don’t drive drunk and tired, no matter what hurry you are in. Life is more valuable than time.
  • Avoid aggressive driving, unnecessary overtaking, and speeding.

Well! You can also check some essential tips on how to share the road safely from Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Situation: John is recounting a minor car accident he witnessed while on his way to work to his colleague, Lisa.

John: Lisa, you won’t believe what I saw on my way here. There was a car accident right in front of me.

Lisa: Oh no! That sounds scary. What happened?

John: A blue sedan was trying to make a left turn, but it didn’t notice an oncoming motorcycle. They collided, but thankfully, it wasn’t at a very high speed.

Lisa: That’s alarming. Were they okay?

John: Yes, both drivers seemed shaken but not injured. They got out of their vehicles and checked on each other. The front bumper of the sedan was damaged, and the motorcycle had fallen over.

Lisa: Did anyone call the police or an ambulance?

John: A few bystanders immediately called the emergency services. They arrived quickly to assess the situation and direct the traffic.

Remember! Regardless of their roles, everyone on the road is equally responsible for road safety. No one wants to be a victim of an accident. We all should develop safe driving practices and help others on the road.

However, if any accident occurs, we should immediately inform the concerned authority and describe the accident if we have witnessed it.

Happy learning!

Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville police and handcuffed by officers outside Valhalla Golf Club on Friday ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident.

Darlington said the scene involving Scheffler and the police unfolded “very quickly, very rapidly and very aggressively” on the ESPN broadcast.

Scheffler, 27, was booked before 7:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections.

Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville police and handcuffed by officers outside of Valhalla Golf Club on Friday

The situation, which occurred around 5:45 a.m. in the pitch dark, was all due to a misunderstanding over traffic flow.

Scheffler was trying to get around traffic caused by a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus near the course.

As Scheffler was pulling into the course, the police officer started banging on the side of the car to get him to stop.

“When he didn’t stop, the police officer attached himself to the vehicle, Scheffler then traveled another 10 yards before stopping the car. The police officer then grabbed at his arm, attempting to pull him out of the car before Scheffler eventually opened the door, at which point the police officer then pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs,” Darlington said on “SportsCenter.”

Darlington noted that Scheffler’s car was a player courtesy vehicle and the standard one players use to access the course.

A police officer told Darlington that Scheffler “is going to jail” and PGA security was not allowed access to Scheffler as he was being taken away.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back in handcuffs. Very stunned about what was happening. Looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me.’ He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation — it moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively,” Darlington said.

“He was detained in that police vehicle for approximately 20 minutes. The police officers at that point did not understand that Scottie Scheffler was a golfer in the tournament nor, of course, that he is the No. 1 player in the world.”

Scheffler, who was initially scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m., was trying to get to the course for Friday’s second round, which has been delayed by an hour and a half.

Scheffler shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday to put him five shots behind leader Xander Schauffele .

He amazingly started his round by holing out for an eagle from the fairway.

Scheffler was making his anticipated return to the circuit Thursday following the birth of his first child with wife Meredith, a baby boy named Bennett.

The two-time Masters winner missed the Wells Fargo Championship last week, with Rory McIlroy taking the top prize.

Ahead of the opening round of the PGA Championship, Scheffler spoke about the early moments of parenthood .

“At home it was a nice time to reflect a little bit on my career so far and where my life has gone. I married my high school sweetheart and I always wanted to play professional golf, and now I’m here. I was sitting there with a newborn in my arms and the green jacket in the closet. A pretty insane feeling,” he said.

Scheffler, who married Meredith in 2020, shared the first image of his newborn son Monday on social media.

“Welcome to the world little one,” Scheffler gushed on Instagram. “Your mom & dad love you so much.”

Louisville Officer Bryan Gillis Says He Was ‘Dragged,’ Injured by Scottie Scheffler

D etective Bryan Gillis is the Louisville, Kentucky, police officer who says he was “dragged” and injured by a car being driven by the world’s number 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, outside Valhalla Golf Course on May 17.

That’s according to a citation filed against Scheffler.

The citation accuses Scheffler of assault, second-degree of a police officer; criminal mischief third-degree; reckless driving; and disregard signals from officers directing traffic. It lists the witness’s name as Detective Bryan Gillis, LMPD. The citation’s narrative says that Gillis accused Scheffler of dragging him with his vehicle, causing him injuries.

Video showed the arrest.

Scheffler was released in time to play in the second round of the PGA Championship, according to USA Today. Earlier in the morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus, USA Today reported. According to CBS Sports, the person killed was a tournament worker.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Arrest Citation Accused Scottie Scheffler of Accelerating Forward, ‘Dragging Detective Gillis to the Ground,’ & Causing Injuries

The citation accusing Scheffler of felony assault says Detective Gillis “was directing traffic into Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Course due to the road being closed in both directions from an earlier fatal collision. Listed subject was driving eastbound to gain access to the course.”

The citation continues, “Subject pulled into the westbound lanes, where outbound traffic was flowing and to avoid backed up traffic. Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lanes, in full LMPD uniform, and a hi-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket.”

Detective Gillis “stopped subject and attempted to give instructions. Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee. He was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment by emergency medical personnel. Detective Gill’s uniform pants, valued at approximately $80 were damaged beyond repair,” the citation says.

Scheffler released a statement after he was released from jail.

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today,” Scheffler wrote in his Instagram story.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective,” he wrote.

2. Detective Bryan Gillis, Who Previously Worked for the New Orleans Police Department, Owns a Collision Investigation Company

According to his LinkedIn page, Gillis is the owner of “ACIS Advanced Collision Investigation Services LLC.” He has owned the company for more than six years, his LinkedIn page says.

“Reconstruct vehicle collisions and download CDR modules,” the page says.

He also writes that he has been a “traffic officer” with the Louisville Metro Police Department from September 2014 to present.

Gillis also worked as a patrol officer with the Louisville Police Department from 2007 to present.

Before that, he worked as a patrol officer with the New Orleans Police Department from 2004 to 2007.

On May 9, the Louisville Metro Police Department posted a traffic enforcement warning on its Facebook page. “The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club will tee off starting on Monday 5-13-24 with practice rounds and the event itself starts on Thursday 5-16-24 and continuing on into the weekend. Parking and traffic are important as you make your way to the venue,” the post says.

3. Bryan Gillis, Who Received a Governor’s Award for ‘Impaired Driving Enforcement,’ Was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army

Louisville PD Detective Bryan Gillis

According to his LinkedIn page, Gillis was an infantry soldier in the U.S. Army. He worked as a staff sergeant in a “mechanized unit,” his LinkedIn page says, listing his service as running from 1997 through 2004.

His education was listed as a bachelor of science degree in business administration and management from the University of Phoenix, and credits in business completed through Delgado Community College.

Gillis was the recipient of the “governor’s award for impaired driving enforcement” in 2012, his LinkedIn page says. “For outstanding achievement in the apprehension of impaired drivers,” he wrote.

The department’s Facebook page posted a photo showing Gillis helping fix a baby stroller.

4. Bryan Gillis Once Investigated a Case of 2 Men ‘T-Boned’ While on a Golf Cart

Louisville PD Bryan Gillis.

Court TV posted a video of Gillis testifying in a case against a man named Pozo Illas in 2021. “Officer Bryan Gillis, who performed crash data retrieval and collision analysis of defendant’s vehicle, takes the stand,” the caption reads.

According to court records in that case, in 2019, two men, Chris Shultz and Brian Hovekamp, went golfing together at Seneca Golf Course in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

In order to get from the front nine to the back nine, golfers must cross Pee Wee Reese Road, a marked golf cart path, the records say. As they were crossing, their golf cart was “T-boned” by a 2006 Ford Mustang that was driven by Pozo Illas, the court records say.

The driver was severely injured but survived. Schultz, the passenger, died “due to multiple blunt force injuries,” the court records say. The suspect’s blood alcohol content was .0161, the records say.

The court records say that Gillis testified that “a crash data retrieval report from the Mustang recorded that for the 20 seconds that preceded the collision, the vehicle speed steadily remained between 50 and 60 miles per hour.”

5. An ESPN Reporter Accused Bryan Gillis of Grabbing at Scottie Scheffler’s Arm

An ESPN reporter named Jeff Darlington says he witnessed the incident.

“Entering Valhalla Golf Club this morning, we witnessed a car pull around us that was – Scottie Scheffler was in the car to be very clear about the details here,” Darlington said in an ESPN broadcast.

“Scottie Scheffler has been detained by police officers. placed in the back of a police vehicle in handcuffs after he tried to pull around what he believed to be security, ended up being police officers,” he said.

“They told him to stop. When he didn’t stop, the police officer attached himself to the vehicle. Scheffler then traveled another 10 yards before stopping the car,” continued Darlington. “The police officer then grabbed at his arm, attempting to pull him out of the car before Scheffler eventually opened the door. At which point the police officer pulled Scheffler out of the car. pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.”

Scheffler was “walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs. Very stunned about what was happening. Looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’” Darlington said on ESPN. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively. He was detained in that police vehicle for approximately 20 minutes. The police officers at that point did not understand that Scottie Scheffler was a golfer in the tournament nor, of course, that he is the number one player in the world.”

Scottie Scheffler arrested for allegedly assaulting officer near fatal crash while on way to PGA Championship

Updated on: May 17, 2024 / 8:45 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler  was arrested by police in Louisville on Friday morning on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was led to a police car and charged with assaulting an officer after allegedly attempting to drive around traffic backed up from a pedestrian fatality investigation. Scheffler was released later in the morning and continued competing in the tournament.

Police said Scheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. In a statement to CBS News, Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines said the golfer "never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle" and added that "we will litigate this matter as needed."

In a statement posted to Instagram , Scheffler said he was in a "very chaotic situation."

"There was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," Scheffler said. "I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic. Police said the man died at the scene, CBS affiliate WLKY  reported . Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla Golf Club, with dozens of police cars flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, later started the second round shortly after 10 a.m. EDT. After finishing Friday's round, Scheffler told reporters he wouldn't discuss specific details about the incident, but he said he didn't know at the time that the accident ahead of him in traffic was fatal.

"I feel like my head's still spinning," Scheffler said. "I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell — that was a first for me."

Scheffler expressed confidence that the charges would "get resolved, I think, fairly quickly."

Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

According to a police report, Scheffler was in an eastbound lane and pulled into the westbound lanes, where a uniformed detective was standing. The detective stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward," according to the report.

The detective, identified as Det. Gillis, was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist," according to the report.

The detective was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Louisville Metro Police Department said that all lanes were closed during the traffic fatality investigation.

"While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested," the police said in a statement. "We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating."

Romines said Scheffler was driving a marked player's vehicle and proceeding as he'd been instructed.

"I think the officer that was directing traffic was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that's where the miscommunication arose, and that's why we're here," Romines told WLKY.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said he watched this unfold with Scheffler driving past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV. He said police pulled Scheffler out of the vehicle, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

In this still image made from video provided by ESPN, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is escorted to a police car after being handcuffed near Valhalla Golf Club, the site of the PGA Championship golf tournament, early May 17, 2024.

"Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, 'Please help me,'" Darlington said. "He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively."

Darlington said whole the incident started with a "misunderstanding with traffic flow."

With cars backed up in the morning darkness, other PGA-marked vehicles tried to move slowly toward the entrance. Traffic finally began to move slowly a little before 7 a.m.

A spokesperson for the PGA of America identified the man who was struck by the shuttle bus as John Mills. In a statement, the PGA's Greg Dillard said Mills, a worker with one of the group's vendors, was going to work when he was hit.

"This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship," the PGA said in a statement. "We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear conveyed his condolences on social media , saying, "Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family."

"The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution," Beshear said.

Scheffler also expressed his sympathies for the man who died.

"It truly puts everything in perspective," Scheffler said on social media.

The website for the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections briefly showed a booking photo of Scheffler before the photo was removed. According to the website, Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m.

Scottie Scheffler is seen in a police booking photo May 17, 2024.

Did Scottie Scheffler play today?

Scheffler returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted "free Scottie!"

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range. Then he went out and made a birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to three feet. Scheffler finished Friday's round two strokes behind leader Collin Morikawa at nine strokes under par for the tournament, CBS Sports reports .

It was a surreal start to what already has been a wild week of weather — the Masters champion and top-ranked in the world, dressed in workout clothes with his hands in cuffs behind his back amid flashing flights.

Darlington said police were not sure who he was. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, "There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail."

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays his shot from the 12th tee during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments. He was home in Dallas for the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son who was born on May 8.

"I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning," Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 Friday that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship. He is seeking to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Last month, Scheffler won his second  Masters Tournament  victory in three years, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.

  • Witnesses describe scene as 2 adults, 1 child killed in train-to-vehicle crash in North Tonawanda

Motorist Chrissy Galla Reid witnessed a Dodge pickup truck get trapped between a pair of railroad gates and struck by a northbound Amtrak train Friday night while at the stoplight at River Road and Felton Street in North Tonawanda.

The impact “folded the car in half,” Reid told The Buffalo News Saturday morning.

The train’s momentum dragged it almost to the next stoplight at Ward and River roads, Reid and North Tonawanda firefighters said.

North Tonawanda Police Department Capt. Daryl Truty said early Saturday afternoon that a 69-year-old male, 66-year-old female and 6-year-old boy were killed in the crash. The deceased were not identified by name, and the investigation is ongoing, Truty said. An Amtrak spokesperson confirmed that Amtrak Train 281 was involved in the crash, adding that none of the 21 passengers were injured. Amtrak is involved in the investigation, the spokesperson said.

Reid, a Kenmore resident, and Francisco Dejesus, a 27-year-old also from Erie County, described their firsthand accounts of events preceding the crash on the tracks just a few steps from River Road. They explained that several vehicles from an earlier police traffic stop on the east side of the tracks on Felton Street ultimately prevented the pickup truck from passing. Before the truck could turn around, it was sandwiched between the railroad gates, they said independently.

“I think it could have been handled differently,” Dejesus said regarding law enforcement’s response. “They should have never stopped so dangerously close to train tracks.”

Dejesus’ Jeep had broken down at about 7 p.m., and he pulled into an empty lot away from the railroad tracks, on the south side of Felton Street. He called his brother to pick him up. When his brother arrived a half hour later, he was pulled over by police officers for not having a front license plate or insurance, Dejesus said.

Over a period of 25 minutes, Dejesus said a towing company arrived to remove his brother’s vehicle – and traffic was still moving down one lane of Felton Street – but a law enforcement vehicle was parked very close to the tracks. As the “ding, ding, ding” of the rail warning sounded, Dejesus said an officer moved his vehicle away from the tracks.

River Road, left, runs north and south in North Tonawanda. Pictured, via Google Maps StreetView, is the intersection with Felton Street where officials said an Amtrak train struck a pickup truck Friday night, resulting in the deaths of three people in the pickup.

From River Road, Reid said she watched the driver of a blue pickup turn right from River onto Felton, attempting to maneuver around the law enforcement vehicles and tow truck. The driver of the pickup could not navigate around them and ended up on the railroad tracks, she said.

“Very suddenly,” within 20 seconds, red railroad signal lights flashed and the railroad gates came down, trapping the vehicle on the tracks, Reid said. The approaching train blew its horn continuously.

Reid remembered shaking as the events unfolded.

She blocked traffic from River Road to prevent any vehicles from hindering the pickup’s escape, she said. She noticed the window of the pickup was open, she said, so she screamed, “Oh my God, move, move, get out of the way.”

Wheatfield woman killed after car-train crash in North Tonawanda

  • Aaron Besecker ,  Ben Tsujimoto

The driver of the pickup backed up, but not with enough force to break the railroad gates, she said.

“It happened in a split second,” Dejesus said.

According to the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC), River Road between Ward Road and Wheatfield Street was closed to traffic until about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Friday’s incident was the second fatal crash involving a train and vehicle near River Road this year. Around 7 a.m. Jan. 16, a 29-year-old Wheatfield woman in a Hyundai Elantra was struck by an Amtrak train at River and Whitmer roads in North Tonawanda and died hours later at ECMC. River’s intersection with Witmer is less than a mile from the Felton Street rail crossing.
