The “Biography of the Millennium,” a four-volume set unveiling the 100 most influential people of the last 1,000 years, according to A&E; Network, is available on home video.

The winner: Johann Gutenberg (1400-1468), the first European printer to use movable type.

Rounding out the Top 10: 2, Isaac Newton; 3, Martin Luther; 4, Charles Darwin; 5, William Shakespeare; 6, Christopher Columbus; 7, Karl Marx; 8, Albert Einstein; 9, Nicolaus Copernicus; 10, Galileo Galilei.

The countdown begins with Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent at 100.

The boxed set of videos lists for $39.95 and can be ordered at (800) 423-1212.

The four-hour program was seen on A&E; Oct. 19 and again on Nov. 27. It is scheduled for a double showing on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m. and midnight.

Choosing the most influential people of the last 1,000 years was an ambitious undertaking that met with agreement in some camps and ample second-guessing in others. A&E; polled more than 360 journalists, scholars and political leaders, asking them to vote for the men and women who they felt had done the most to shape the world today. The network also took into account the views of viewers who cast votes on the “Biography” Web site.

The final list, which includes a fascinating mixture of the good, the bad, the brilliant and the diabolical, has sparked debate. Of course, total agreement of the final choices of the A&E; Editorial Board was not a possibility.

The program is hosted by Harry Smith, with observations from a panel that includes Hillary Rodham Clinton, Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, Henry Kissinger, Newt Gingrich, Richard Holbrooke, C. Everett Koop, Itzhak Perlman, Norman Schwarzkopf, Wendy Wasserstein, David Remnick of the New Yorker, Walter Isaacson of Time and Harold Evans of U.S. News and World Report.

The Joy of Lists, eh? Entering the millennium listmaking fray (prematurely, as Stephen Jay Gould might point out), A&E presents 100 people for 1000 years, in this rapid-fire Biography -lite series comprised of 1-4 minute mediabites. Featuring input and commentary from editors at Time , Newsweek , and U.S. News & World Report , as well as various scientists, political leaders, and entertainers, the 4-volume compilation (from 100 to 1) is a combination of shrewd choices (even though it is more symbolic than anything else, the top slot going to Johann Gutenberg, father of the printing press, seemed very fitting to me) and notable omissions (not one single sports figure made the cut, although Princess Di weighed in at number 73, placing her well above--to cite a few memorable authors--Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, and Emily Brontë, none of whom appear on the list at all). In addition, the pairings of "experts" and honorees is, occasionally, downright weird: Norman Schwarzkopf on Isaac Newton? Newt Gingrich on Christopher Columbus? Robin Williams on William Shakespeare ? (At least Williams has the excuse of being characteristically hilarious--not so Norm and Newt.) Finally, libraries would have to create labels for the boxes listing the actual people covered on each tape for this set to have any reference value whatsoever. With individual Biography episodes now reduced to $14.95, we would recommend investing in the full-length biographies of these chosen 100 over this meager boxed set. Optional. Aud: J, H, C, P. ( R. LIST OF MILLENNIUM’S 100 TOP INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE SPARKS DISCUSSION

It’s understandable then that as the millennium draws to a close, the country looks back over its shoulder in an attempt to list the great ones of the past.

Recently, the cable network A&E; announced its list of the 100 most influential people who have graced the stage of history over the past 1,000 years. The special program of “Biography” will be rebroadcast on Dec. 31, New Years Eve.

No. 1 on A&E;’s list is Johann Gutenberg, the German printer reputedly the first European to print with movable type. He is followed by English scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton, who first devised the laws of gravity, motion and differential calculus. They are followed by Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant Reformation; naturalist Charles Darwin, creator of the theory of evolution; and playwright William Shakespeare.

A&E; spokeswomanKathie Gorden explains how the selections were made: “A process was developed that sent a ballot to 360 experts in their fields. It covered a wide variety of people, from politicians and journalists to people in the arts.”

According to Gordon, there was a great deal of discussion before the final decisions were made, but some choices seemed obvious. “There was a surprising amount of consensus on the first 50,” says Gordon. “Many people felt that it was important to look to the impact that their lives had as their influence rippled through time.”

To those who observe that the list is dominated by white European males Gordon says: “We had broad number of experts that ranged from a Harvard physicist to an Asian expert at Stanford. We feel the list reflects the sociopolitical realities of the centuries.”

Local historians have their own perspectives on the A&E; list.

Professor Edwin Baldridge, former chairman of Muhlenberg College’s history department, thinks Gutenberg was an excellent choice for No. 1. “I would pick up Gutenberg as having the most total impact across all generations,” he says. “Back when I was in college 50 years ago, the professors used to say that no one equals Gutenberg in his impact on the world, and I still think that holds true.”

Baldridge is also comfortable with the selection of Christopher Columbus, who occupies place No. 8 on the A&E; list. But he would elevate Benjamin Franklin, who made No. 68. “He was a outstanding man of the 18th century in both Europe and America,” Baldridge says.

One figure who did not make the list that Baldridge would include is American jurist and early 19th-century U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.” He shaped the legal system and gave us the principles on which this country was built,” says Baldridge. “And some of those same principles have been used by other nations to shape their judicial systems.”

Baldridge also thinks President Harry Truman belongs on the list, which includes presidents Washington, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and Reagan. “(Reagan’s) role in light of the Cold War has raised his status as president in recent years,” Baldridge says.

Professor Donald Miller of Lafayette College says that although he thinks the ideas of lists of influential people are fun “in many ways they are basically meaningless.” According to Miller, historians today tend to look more at impersonal historical forces than at the roles of individual people.

Still, Miller notes that he might have reversed the first two notables on A&E;’s list, giving Isaac Newton the top place and Gutenberg No. 2. “I think Newton, in terms of real science, had more of an impact,” says Miller. “It is true that without him we might have come up with those concepts anyway, but it probably would have been 100 years later, which would have had a profoundly different impact on the world in which we live.”

Columbus is also on Miller’s personal list of influential people of the millennium. “It is true his discovery was based on a gigantic mistake,” says Miller. “He thought Europe and Asia were much closer than they were. If there had been no American continent in his way, he and his men would have died horrible deaths in the middle of the ocean. But remember, before his discovery the Irish had never seen a white potato and the Italians had never seen a tomato. His voyage changed the world on many levels.”

Muhlenberg College professor of Russian history Robert Croskey says that from his point of view the founder of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin (No. 35), had the most impact on the world in this century and a played significant role in the millennium.

“Russia was not crucial for the world until the late 19th and 20th century,” he says. “Lenin and the creation of the Communist state had a profound impact on our time. Even the Nazi episode in Germany, which certainly cannot be overlooked, grew out of the West’s reaction to the rise of Communism, and the geographic development of Russian Communism had a global impact.”

Croskey approves of the inclusion of Genghis Khan on the A&E; list at No. 22. He has his doubts however about No. 83, Czar Peter the Great. “There is a lot of changing opinion on Peter and his role,” says Croskey. “Today he is seen as a part of an historical process of cultural and political change that began before he came along and continued after his passing.”

Lehigh County Historical Society Executive Director Bernard Fishman disagrees with several of A&E;’s experts’ choices. On Leonardo da Vinci he says, “clearly a significant figure of the time but in terms of influence on art not anywhere near Rembrandt.” Rembrandt is not on the list

Fishman calls Sigmund Freud, No. 12, “a fascinating theorist of now discredited theories.” He says No. 18, Adolf Hitler, “clearly changed the world for the worse, no doubt about it.” But Fishman would also like to see Gavrilo Princip, the assassin of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, whose death sparked World War I, included. “The world we know would surely have been different without World War I,” he says.

Fishman is also surprised that the list contains no Native Americans or architects. “Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Crazy Horse all shaped certain aspects of American culture,” he notes. “And where are the architects? Isn’t Frank Lloyd Wright, although I personally prefer Stanford White, at least equal to Elvis Presley?” No. 57.

Fishman reacts in horror to the inclusion of Princess Diana on the list. “No! No!” he says, “Her life was unfortunate and tragic, but it seems to me whatever influence she had is passing fast.”

Fishman wonders why England’s Queen Victoria; the founder of the modern German state, Otto von Bismarck; and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher are not included. But he notes that his training as an Egyptologist has taught him to take the long view. “We know nothing significant has really happened since 1200 …,” he pauses, “… B.C.”

New York, NY – May 7, 2024  – A&E offers viewers a backstage pass to the celebrated careers of some of hard rock’s greatest legends with new specials celebrating rock icons  Bret Michaels , Twisted Sister’s  Dee Snider ,  Alice Cooper ,  Sammy  Hagar,  and  Sebastian Bach . Produced by Banger Films in association with A+E Factual Studios™ group under the award-winning “ Biography ® ” banner, the specials will feature exclusive interviews with each of the artists and those closest to them. Beginning  Sunday, June 16 at 9pm ET,  the nostalgia inducing specials will go behind-the-scenes to the artists’ journeys to fame, legendary careers, and iconic music that defined the genre then and now.

“Biography: Dee Snider” Premiering Sunday, June 23 at 9pm ET, “Biography: Dee Snider”  shares the untold story of how Snider went from a high school choir boy to one of the most recognized faces in hard rock. The special depicts the disappointment of record label rejection and how this rejection ultimately led him to write the hit song, “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”   Viewers are taken on a whirlwind adventure as they find out just how far success would fuel Snider’s ego before things started to go wrong.

“Biography: Alice Cooper” Premiering Sunday, June 23 at 10pm ET, “Biography: Alice Cooper”  explores the highs and lows of an incredible journey and genre defining artist. Shock rock, hard rock, amazing rock—Alice Cooper and his pioneering group have been described as the founders of it all. From a kid with asthma in Detroit who had an obsession with art and performance to one of the most celebrated characters in music history as the frontman of the groundbreaking Alice Cooper Group to the challenges of addiction that turned the man into a character with the desire to offend, the special delves into the incredible career and legacy of a rock icon and his legendary band.

“Biography: Sammy Hagar” Premiering Sunday, June 30 at 9pm ET, “Biography: Sammy Hagar”  traces Hagar’s path to fame, beginning as a poverty-stricken child, to the lead singer of the band Montrose, to  launching a successful solo career, and ultimately  joining Van Halen. The special explores how Hagar helped Van Halen get their first ever number one hit, uncovers what led a band that was on the top of world to suddenly split apart, and how Hagar has continued to leave his mark on the hard rock genre.

“Biography Sebastian Bach” Premiering Sunday, June 30 at 10pm ET,  “Biography: Sebastian Bach”  outlines how a small-town kid from Canada became the ultimate bad boy of hard rock. From a job offer as a rock front man at age 14 to a last-minute wedding invitation that led to him meeting the Bon Jovi family and joining Skid Row ,  the special explores the highs and lows of Bach’s incredible career.

Attorney Johnnie Cochran took on highly publicized police brutality cases and defended such celebrity clients as Michael Jackson and O. J. Simpson.

Johnnie Cochran established himself as a sought after attorney dealing with high-profile police brutality cases involving the African American community. He attracted famous clients like Michael Jackson and led O. J. Simpson 's defense team in the 1995 murder trial. Amidst much debate over the case, Cochran entered the national spotlight and became a celebrity himself, making screen appearances and writing his memoirs.

Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. was born on October 2, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Hattie and Johnnie L. Cochran Sr. The family moved to California in 1943, where the younger Cochran eventually excelled as a student in what was becoming a more racially integrated environment. In 1959, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and later attended Loyola Marymount University Law School, graduating in 1962. Upon passing the bar, Cochran worked as a deputy criminal prosecutor in Los Angeles. By mid-decade, he’d entered private practice with Gerald Lenoir and soon launched a firm of his own, Cochran, Atkins & Evans.

Around this time, Cochran began to build a reputation for taking on cases involving questionable police actions against African Americans. In 1966, a Black motorist named Leonard Deadwyler, while attempting to get his pregnant wife to a hospital, was killed by police officer Jerold Bova. Cochran filed a civil suit on behalf of Deadwyler's family; though he lost, the attorney was nonetheless inspired to take on police abuse cases over the ensuing years. During the early 1980s, he oversaw a settlement for the family of African American football player Ron Settles, who died in a police cell under questionable circumstances. The following decade, Cochran won a huge, unprecedented court payment for a 13-year-old molested by an officer.

In the early 1970s, Cochran also went to court in defense of Geronimo Pratt, a former Black Panther accused of murder. Pratt was convicted and imprisoned, while Cochran maintained that the activist was railroaded by authorities, pushing for a retrial. (The conviction was eventually overturned after more than two decades. Pratt was released, with Cochran also overseeing a wrongful imprisonment suit.) In 1978, Cochran once again became part of the city’s legal force when he joined the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, although he eventually returned to private practice.

Over the years, Cochran's roster included famous entertainers like actor Todd Bridges, who was charged with attempted murder, and pop icon Michael Jackson, with Cochran arranging an out-of-court settlement for the singer in relation to child molestation charges.

In 1994, Cochran joined Alan Dershowitz, F. Lee Bailey, Robert Shapiro, Barry Scheck and Robert Kardashian to form the core of the so-called “dream team” of lawyers hired to defend athlete/actor O.J. Simpson in his trial for the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman . The “trial of the century,” as it was dubbed, began in January 1995 and was among the most publicized in history, followed by millions around the world.

Cochran, displaying his trademark style, came to lead the team, with some conflict rising among the attorneys amidst sensational proceedings. Upon Simpson trying on bloodied gloves that prosecutors alleged were used during the murder, Cochran came up with a phrase that would become famous: “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Under the auspices of Bailey, who had a private investigator background, the team also discovered that detective Mark Fuhrman had made racist, highly incendiary remarks about African-American citizens. Cochran thus made controversial closing statements in which he compared the detective’s philosophy to that of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler .

Simpson was found not guilty in his murder trial, yet nonetheless faced civil litigation, with millions in damages awarded to the Brown and Goldman families.

Because of widespread coverage of the Simpson trial, Cochran entered the superstar realm of celebrity, reportedly receiving a $2.5 million advance to write his memoirs. Yet more controversy followed the lawyer when items from his personal life were publicly revealed. His first wife, Barbara Cochran Berry, wrote her own memoir — Life After Johnnie Cochran: Why I Left the Sweetest Talking, Most Successful Black Lawyer in L.A. — accusing her ex-husband of cruel behaviors that included physical and emotional abuse. Cochran's longtime mistress, Patricia Sikora, also spoke out against the attorney.

Cochran penned the books Journey to Justice (1996) and A Lawyer's Life (2002). He appeared on Court TV’s Inside America’s Courts and was also featured on a number of TV programs, including Jimmy Kimmel Live , The Chris Rock Show and The Roseanne Show as well as the Spike Lee film Bamboozled (2000). Cochran continued to take on new cases into the new millennium, ranging from work for clients like Abner Louima, who was tortured while in New York City police custody, and rapper/music mogul Sean "Puffy" Combs , to an anti-trust litigation issued against racing giant NASCAR.

In 2004, Cochran’s associates revealed that he was suffering from an undisclosed illness. He died from a brain tumor on March 29, 2005, at the age of 67.
