The main issue is that some of the spelling is different and this site uses US spelling.

Year 3 is generally equivalent to 2nd Grade in the US.

year 3 length homework

Sort the units and identify which units should be used in context.

Note: volume refers to how much space an object takes up, and capacity refers to how much you can fit inside an object. These are often similar but they are nonetheless different measures.

3. Round shopping

When you are out shopping for a few items, why not ask your child to estimate the total cost of the items in your basket? They will need to use their rounding skills to do this. When the items have gone through the till, compare the actual cost to your child’s estimate.

If you are paying with a note, you could ask your child to work out how much change you will receive. This will give them experience using money and will also practise their subtraction skills.

4. Play ‘what do I have in my purse?’

This game can help your child practise adding up different amounts of money. Take a purse and put five different coins in it. Ask your child to find the total, and then swap in some different coins and try again. For example:

You have a 1p coin, two 5p coins, a 50p coin, and a £2 coin. What does it make added together? (£2.61)   What if the 5p coins were replaced with 20p coins? (£2.91)

Activity: Shopping problems

year 3 length homework

Practise money skills and calculations.

5. Make a timetable

Make a timetable with your child including the time they get up, the time school begins, and the time they go to bed. They could record these times in four different ways:

  • in analogue clock form
  • in digital clock form using the 12-hour clock (remember to use am or pm )
  • in digital clock form using the 24-hour clock

Help your child understand how different units of time (seconds, minutes, hours, and so on) relate to each other. For example, they should know that there are 60 seconds in a minute, 24 hours in a day, and 12 months in a year.

How to teach perimeter in year 3 (FREE worksheets)!

year 3 length homework

Hi everyone, today we are going to learn perimeter in Year 3.  So let’s get started.

What is perimeter

The perimeter is the distance around a 2D shape… You can imagine it as an ant crawling around the shape, so the area the ant will cover is the perimeter of that shape. The perimeter is normally measured in cm but can also be measured in mm and meters

perimeter in year 3

you can calculate perimeter by adding the length of all the sides of the shape

Let’s calculate the perimeter of this shape. There are two ways to do it.

perimeter

  • Adding all the sides: 4+4+4+4=16
  • Multiplying: instead of adding all the sides you can do it as 4×4=16 which is quite simple and quick.

3 steps to teach perimeter to kids

  • First, show this video to your kids. Once it’s done ask kids what they think the perimeter is.

  • To get a better picture if your kids have understood the idea give them these worksheets to work on. It will help them gain more confidence in this topic. So grab your rulers and start solving the problem

A view of a female anglerfish, with wide jaws lined with very sharp teeth and a lure sticking out of her forehead in the dark sea depths.

Unconventional Sex Let Anglerfish Conquer the Deep Ocean

During a chaotic period some 50 million years ago, the strange deep-sea creatures left the ocean bottom and thrived by clamping onto their mates.

How did the ghoulish creatures known as anglerfish pull off the evolutionary feat that let them essentially take over the ocean’s sunless depths?

It took peculiar sex — extremely peculiar sex.

Scientists at Yale University have discovered that a burst of anglerfish diversification began some 50 million years ago as the ancestral line developed a bizarre strategy to ensure successful reproduction in the dark wilderness.

To mate, tiny males would clamp with sharp teeth onto the bellies of much larger females. Some males would let go after mating while others would permanently fuse into the females. The males that stayed attached became permanent organs for sperm production.

“We found that a cascade of traits, including those required for sexual parasitism, allowed anglerfishes to invade the deep sea,” Chase D. Brownstein , a graduate student in the ecology and evolutionary biology department at Yale who was the study’s lead author, said in a news release.

Today, there are more than 300 species of anglerfish, which makes them the most varied family of vertebrates in the ocean’s lightless zone. The region starts about 1,000 feet down — just beneath the photic zone, which gets enough sunlight to support photosynthesis and most of the sea’s plants — and descends for miles. The team’s study was published last week in the journal Current Biology.

Finding a mate in the deep sea can be extremely difficult because of the environment’s incomprehensibly vast size. By some estimates, the dark zone amounts to more than 97 percent of the planetary space inhabited by living things, mainly because the ocean plunges to a maximum depth of nearly seven miles. In contrast, land habitats make up less than 1 percent of the planet’s biosphere because the band of life is so narrow, making its volume quite small.

A single male anglerfish, which has a small translucent body with its organs visible, in the blackness of the deep sea.

The anglerfish’s bizarre mating routine is seen as counteracting the otherwise slim chances of finding a mate in the world’s largest ecosystem. It is the only known vertebrate that employs sexual parasitism, and that gave it an evolutionary edge.

Over time, the male can physically fuse with the female, connecting to her skin and bloodstream. Eventually, he loses his eyes and all internal organs except for his testes. A female can carry several males on her body.

The Yale team documented how immune systems that attack foreign threats changed over time so the female hosts would not reject the parasitic males.

Anglerfish get their name from how females use rodlike appendages with glowing tips to lure prey into their needlelike teeth. They’re fish that fish . Their mouths are so large and their bodies so flexible that they can swallow prey up to twice their size.

The Yale team used fossils and genetic data from more than 100 living anglerfish species to determine that the burst of diversification came during a major global heat spike between 50 million and 35 million years ago. The world’s oceans were thrown into turmoil, and the bottom-walking ancestors of the anglerfish began to explore the wider oceanic world.

“It happened in the blink of an evolutionary eye about 50 million years ago,” Mr. Brownstein said in an interview. “It was like whales going back into the ocean. It was amazing.”

The team found that, simultaneously, the fish developed their unusual reproductive skills. It was unable to determine which came first — temporary or permanent attachment.

Some female anglerfish can grow quite large, reaching more than three feet in length, but most are smaller. The free-swimming males typically are a few inches long.

How do they find the females in the perpetual darkness of the deep sea?

Mr. Brownstein said the males have enlarged nasal organs that are thought to let them follow faint trails of female pheromones through the darkness in order to find their partner.

“You sniff out your mate, literally,” he said.

National Weather Service confirms four tornadoes following strong storms this week

(Editor's note: This story has been updated as of 8 a.m. Friday, June 7 to reflect the latest tornado confirmations)

The National Weather Service has confirmed four tornadoes touched down in Ohio following severe weather from Wednesday into Thursday .

Here's the latest.

National Weather Service confirms EF2 tornado in Frazeysburg, Muskingum County

The NWS Pittsburgh office, which covers a portion of Eastern Ohio, confirmed an EF2 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 130 mph touched down in Frazeysburg, about an hour east of Columbus.

Survey crews continue to investigate potential tornado damage in far Coshocton County, to Muskingum's north, according to the NWS.

Additional details, such as the length and width of the path, are expected later today.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the storm that spawned the tornadoes in Frazeysburg struck at about 1 a.m. Thursday. On Facebook,  Frazeysburg police said  the storms struck after the expiration of a NWS tornado warning and caused some injuries, but none were considered serious.

Brief, weak tornado confirmed in Delaware County

According to the NWS Wilmington office, which covers Central and Southwest Ohio, a "brief and weak" tornado touched down in extreme northeast Delaware County.

The twister was rated EF0, with a maximum wind speed of 65 mph. It was on the ground for a quarter-mile with a maximum path width of 50 yards.

Video taken near the intersection of Olive Green and Fredricks roads shows a brief tornado developing and then dissipating quickly as it moves through a wooded area along Porter Central Road, according to the NWS. The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency reported minor tree damage in the area, supporting the maximum wind speed rating.

The Wilmington office said the Delaware EMA offered "considerable assistance" in confirming this tornado.

NWS confirms EF0 tornado in Knox County

On X , formerly Twitter, the NWS Cleveland office confirmed an EF0 tornado hit the community of Brandon in Knox County. The twister had a peak wind speed of 85 mph, and the path of damage was more than 3 miles long and 80 yards wide, at its maximum.

According to the NWS report , the tornado touched down at 8:44 p.m. June 5 and was on the ground for 12 minutes. It caused sporadic tree damage and tore the siding and shingles off some homes. The tornado also partially tore the roof off a garage, and threw it into the woods about 100 yards away.

Brief tornado confirmed in Licking County

The NWS, with "considerable assistance" from the Licking County Emergency Management Agency, has confirmed a brief tornado southwest of Hanover, according to the Wilmington office . From the damage along Leslie and Claylick roads, the NWS has ruled it an EF0 tornado, with peak wind speeds of 80 mph.

A number of trees were uprooted or snapped, and a few buildings sustained minor roof damage.

A full report was expected to be issued Friday, according to the NWS.

Ohio ties state record for tornadoes

These four confirmations bring Ohio's tornado total for the year to 62, tying the state record.

The previous worst year for tornadoes in Ohio was 1992, when 62 twisters touched down, according to Brandon Peloquin, warning coordination meteorologist for NWS Wilmington office.

The strongest that year was an  EF4 tornado  that hit Van Wert County in Western Ohio on Feb. 18. With wind speeds of 166 to 200 mph, the tornado was on the ground for 2.8 miles and caused six injuries but no fatalities. It destroyed a house, a mobile home and two cars, and damaged nine homes,  according to Tornado Talk .

How are tornadoes confirmed?

After suspected tornadoes are spotted, crews from the National Weather Service survey possible tornado damage in person.

The pattern of damage, not how much damage was caused, determines whether it was a tornado,  according to the weather service . For tornadoes, with their  violently rotating columns of air , damage often has a chaotic appearance, with larger uprooted trees often crossing each other. Weather service surveyors often look at larger uproots of trees to get a true idea of where the wind was blowing from.

How are tornadoes rated?

The  Enhanced Fujita Scale  classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

  • EF0:  Weak, with wind speeds of 65 to 85 mph
  • EF1:  Weak, 86 to 110 mph
  • EF2:  Strong, 111 to 135 mph
  • EF3:  Strong, 136 to 165 mph
  • EF4:  Violent, 166 to 200 mph
  • EF5:  Violent, greater than 200 mph

Thank you very much. I have just adapted it a little to add an estimation column and measuring the length of their hand. Great to do at home for maths in lockdown and easier than teaching in school with a whole class.
