Many job seekers already know that a large percentage of jobs aren't advertised. In fact, only about one-third of available positions are even advertised, according to Business Insider. So, it is possible that your open cover letter might land on the hiring manager's desk at a time when he just happens to be looking for someone with your talents and qualifications. An open application cover letter – sometimes called a cold cover letter – may be just what you need to launch a successful job search before you even submit an online application for employment.

Body of Cover Letter

In the body of your open application cover letter, highlight a few of your major achievements. Use bullet points to make your special achievements stand out from the rest of your text. Don't include an exhaustive list of accomplishments – you might be that good, but you want to leave something to talk about during the interview.

Tie in your achievements to benefits for the organization. Remember, you're trying to convince the reader to schedule a meeting with you, despite there not being a published job opening. You needn't tell him everything he wants to know about you or there wouldn't be a need for an interview.

Closing Paragraph

In your final paragraph, ask the reader for an informational interview. It's less presumptuous than asking to be interviewed for a job that may not yet exist. An informational interview can lead to an actual job, but the point is that it gets you in front of someone who can tell you more about the company and it gives you a chance to sell your qualifications.

Tell the reader that you'll follow up in the next few days. Use a professional-sounding closing salutation, such as "Kind regards," "Sincerely," or "Yours truly," followed by your signature or typewritten name. Open application means that you do not respond to a job opening, but that you write a letter on your own initiative. That is the way to go if you really want to work at a specific organisation. Or if you have set your eyes on a specific job, without there being a job opening.

Are you ambivalent about the usefulness of an open application? You shouldn’t be! There are a couple of benefits for both the organisation and you:

  • No application rounds: the organisation does not have to pay money for advertising job openings and planning application interviews.
  • No competition: if there are no job openings, fewer people will apply for this function/at this organisation. So your chances increase.
  • You stand out: you are not one of the many application letters. With an open application, you stand out.

Canada announces new pilot programs to support caregivers and Canadian families, intends to make the caregivers program permanent

Caregivers from abroad are invaluable to Canadian families. Their hard work makes a difference in the lives of those they care for, including children, seniors and persons with disabilities.

June 3, 2024—Toronto— Caregivers from abroad are invaluable to Canadian families. Their hard work makes a difference in the lives of those they care for, including children, seniors and persons with disabilities.

As the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot come to a close later this month, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced new, enhanced caregiver pilots. This will allow caregivers to continue to come to Canada, as we work toward making the caregiver pilot programs permanent.

The new pilot programs will provide home care workers with permanent residence (PR) on arrival in Canada. They will also be allowed to work for organizations that provide temporary or part­time care for people who are semi-independent or recovering from an injury or illness. This new pathway means that caregivers can more easily find proper work with reliable employers and have clear, straightforward access to permanent resident status as soon as they arrive in Canada.

Through these new pilot programs, candidates interested in working in Canada’s home care sector will be eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • attain a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
  • hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma
  • have recent and relevant work experience
  • receive an offer for a full-time home care job

These new PR on arrival pilot programs mark an important step forward in Canada’s efforts to meet the evolving home care needs of its diverse population. More information will be available before the full launch of the pilots, including full eligibility criteria and details on how to apply.

Quick facts

In June 2014, there was an inventory of over 60,000 persons for the Live-in Caregiver Program. Today, less than 1% of that Live-in Caregiver Program inventory remains.

As part of the 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada will admit over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents.

As of April 30, 2024, nearly 5,700  caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents since the launch of the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot in 2019.

OpenAI employees' open letter can't slow AI's juggernaut

The latest open letter seeking to slow the runaway train of AI development is likely to prove as ineffectual as the last one.

Why it matters: The argument over AI's long-term dangers has largely lost the interest of tech companies hell-bent on dominating what they see as their industry's next big platform.

  • The leading AI makers have raised enormous war chests to fund building AI faster, bigger and (fingers crossed) better — and it will take more than a list of signatures to change their course.

Driving the news: OpenAI employees and ex-employees Tuesday posted a new public call for whistleblower protections at leading AI firms.

  • The letter, titled "A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence," followed high-profile departures of safety leaders from OpenAI and controversies over exit letters the firm required employees to sign.

Flashback: In March 2023, just four months after OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT sparked an AI frenzy, prominent AI researchers and leaders signed a letter seeking a six-month "pause" in advanced AI development, citing existential risks to human survival posed by the technology.

  • The letter won wide news coverage, but there was no pause . In fact, ChatGPT's success kicked off an accelerating arms race — initially between OpenAI (along with its partner Microsoft) and Google, and eventually joined by every major tech company.
  • The same month that letter was posted, Elon Musk, its most famous signatory, incorporated his own AI company — causing cynics to suggest he wanted competitors to pause so his startup could catch up.

Yes, but: The persistence of employee dissent within OpenAI suggests the company might be less united than it appeared in the aftermath of its boardroom drama last fall.

  • After the firm's board fired CEO Sam Altman, virtually every employee of the company signed yet another open letter, demanding his return .
  • That letter did get results.

The big picture: Tens of billions of dollars are already committed to accelerating AI development.

  • The resources come from tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Meta. They come from the venture capital firms, which are betting on a vast new wave of startup growth.
  • And they come from the toolmakers — most notably, chipmakers led by Nvidia and TSMC — building products to speed the AI-makers' work.

This kind of investment tidal wave comes once every 15 years or so in Silicon Valley — most recently with the mass embrace of the smartphone around 2010; before that, with the rise of the internet starting in 1995; and before that, with the arrival of personal computing around 1980.

  • These waves have their own booms and busts, but none of them has ever been stymied.
  • Once companies find themselves in a race, they always seem to move faster than regulators, whistleblowers , dissenters and anyone else who wants to say "Hey, wait a minute, think about the consequences."

Case in point: Google, which long led the world in AI research, was moving more cautiously in the pre-ChatGPT era. OpenAI's success led Google's leaders and investors to feel they had no choice but to move faster .

The other side: The AI boom is the first new tech wave to arrive after the era of the techlash, when political leaders and much of the public lost faith in tech firms.

  • The failures of the social media era could leave the public more ready to question AI firms' intentions and less eager to buy their promises.
  • Ultimately, tech companies must persuade businesses and individuals that AI is worth paying for . Otherwise, they'll find themselves with a lot of very expensive equipment and a lot fewer customers than they expect.

What is informed delivery.

Informed Delivery is a free service from USPS that shows you preview images of incoming mail, as well as status updates about your incoming and outbound packages. You can see those notifications in a morning Daily Digest email, or at any time via the dashboard from your phone, computer, or the USPS Mobile ® app. Informed Delivery also has other features that make tracking and receiving your packages easier and more convenient.

How does Informed Delivery work?

As mailpieces travel through the USPS ® network, they go through high-speed sorting machines, which take a picture of the front (the side with the address). Informed Delivery shows you grayscale images of those mailpieces arriving soon to your address. (You’ll also see color images of some things, like catalogs or magazines.) Informed Delivery will also show you the status of incoming and outbound packages.

How much does Informed Delivery cost?

Nothing: Informed Delivery is free to customers.

Who is eligible for Informed Delivery?

  • If you have a residential, business, or PO Box ™ address in an eligible ZIP Code ™ (most ZIP Codes ™ are), you may be eligible for Informed Delivery. To enroll in Informed Delivery with a business street or PO Box address, you need a USPS.com business account.
  • You must have a "uniquely coded" mailbox, and some apartment buildings or condos may not have uniquely coded addresses. Check to see if your address is eligible for Informed Delivery .
  • If your address isn't yet eligible, please check back later.

How do I sign up for Informed Delivery?

Activation time may vary, but you will typically start getting notifications within 3 business days.

You'll only get mail preview notifications on days that you're getting mail. (You won't get them on Sundays or federal holidays, either.) Also, check your Email Opt-In settings to make sure your email notifications are turned on and are using the right email address. If you still aren't seeing any emails, please check your spam filter settings and make sure that you add the Informed Delivery email address to your email contacts: [email protected]
