12 Best Places to Listen to Free Music Online

Stream all kinds of music on free sites like Mixcloud, Jango, SoundCloud, YouTube, and more

websites for free music

  • Emporia State University
  • Payment Services

Below is a list of the best free music websites based on my experience using them. I refresh this list each month if any of the websites are no longer free or change their features, and I'm always watching out for other awesome music sites to include.

For YouTube Fans: YouTube Music

Lots of ways to find music.

Works in several countries.

Stream your own music files.

Build custom playlists.

Subscriptions are available for more features.

No account necessary.

YouTube Music is a version of normal YouTube dedicated to streaming songs and music videos. It works like the regular website, but excludes all the non-music content. It's easy to search for music, create playlists, and subscribe to channels for updates when a new song drops.

You can find playlists for specific genres, decades, activities, or moods, and categories for kids. YouTube Music also lets you upload your music to listen from anywhere. The site's home page has personal mixes and handy categories; I've seen Mindful instrumentals, Dance Moods, The Holiday Season, All-time essentials, and International Women's Day.

I like that I can hide the video; it's a great way to listen without distractions. I'm also a huge fan of the lyrics that I can read for some songs — they even show up in line with the music for some tracks. This works from the TV app, too.

This site is especially useful if you use it often. I have found so much new music here because I get recommendations based on my playlists and listening history.

With a paid subscription, you can listen ad-free, offline, and with your screen off (on mobile). There are individual and family plans.

Unlimited, Super Customized Radio: Jango

Lots of customization options.

Listen without creating a user account.

Available as a mobile app.

No skip limit.

Can't share your custom stations.

Jango is another free streaming radio service that makes it easy to listen to free music online from a computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Beyond the unlimited listening and minimum commercials, what makes this service great is that you can build custom radio stations by simply picking your favorite band or singer. There are also hundreds of pre-made stations you can look through by genre.

One neat feature I enjoy using is the variety setting. While playing from any station, adjust the variety meter to teach the site what it should play for you. There's also an edit button where you can choose other artists to add to the station; Jango will play songs by them and other related artists.

Visit the trending section to jump to the most popular radio stations like Viral Global Hits, Dance Virality, Indie Life , and The Millennium Bug.

A Mix of New and Old Music: Spotify

Includes modern and older music.

Create unlimited playlists.

Works on a variety of devices.

Great for recommendations.

More features if you pay.

Can't stream songs on-demand.

Must make a user account.

Limits the number of songs you can skip every hour.

Some features only work if you pay.

Spotify is one of the first apps I reach for when I want to stream music because I like the way it works and that it includes tens of millions of songs.

Once you're set up, search and listen to your favorite music, create playlists, and share music with your friends. You can also access curated playlists. There are plenty of free tools for creating a Spotify playlist online.

Premium plans let you download Spotify music, listen without ads, stream higher-quality audio, play songs on demand, read song lyrics, and skip songs as often as you like. There's one for individuals, families, and students, and all are usually free for the first few months.

The free music through Spotify plays through a web browser, mobile device, or desktop manager that you can download to your computer. Grab the Spotify app , or visit the link below to stream the free music from a browser.

Find Up-and-Coming Artists: SoundCloud

Constantly updated with new content.

One of the best ways to find new artists and bands.

Listen to any song on demand.

No need to log in.

Doesn't include many of the songs found on other music streaming services.

SoundCloud is a long-time favorite of mine that I return to when I want to hear something new. It lets people upload music for free, so it's a great place to find up-and-coming artists.

You can see what's trending on SoundCloud and browse genres like disco, electronic, country, ambient, and more. There's also a search tool, so you can quickly find tracks, bands, and podcasts. Follow artists to stay on top of their new releases, and like tracks and playlists to store music in your personal music collection.

SoundCloud Go+  lets you listen without an internet connection, removes ads, and offers higher quality audio. You also get access to premium tracks. A free 30-day trial is available, and it's half off for students. Free SoundCloud mobile apps are also available.

Professional DJ Mixes: Mixcloud

Multiple ways to find radio stations.

The music is handpicked by real people.

Apps let you listen from a phone or tablet.

A user account isn't required for the web version.

Supported by ads.

Can't listen to specific songs on demand.

Songs can't be skipped.

Mixcloud asks you to re-think radio. The music here is put together by DJs and radio presenters from around the world, making for a different listening experience than what you may be used to. Sort these mixes, radio shows, and music podcasts by mood or genre as well as searchable tags.

For example, if I open the classical music show, I can add ambient and chillout tags to get a highly customized stations that will play that type of music.

There are Mixcloud apps available for iPhone, iPad, and Android if you want to listen on your phone or tablet. It's also available for Apple TV. You can pay for more features like zero ads, the ability to rewind, and early access to new features.

Create Custom Radio Stations: Pandora

Works on many devices.

All the music is free to listen to.

Unlimited skips if you watch ads.

Pay for more features.

Several helpful browsing methods.

Can't choose specific tracks to listen to (unless you watch a video ad).

Includes ads.

Pandora is a great place to find tracks from your favorite artists, and it's a great place to discover new music. When you search for an artist, genre, or composer, the service creates an online streaming radio station based on what you like.

What I appreciate most about using Pandora is that as I listen to custom stations, I'll hear songs and artists similar to those I've already liked. I can then tell Pandora to play more tracks like what I've listening to or to move in a different direction.

It lets you make dozens of unique custom stations that contain music that you love. But if you're not even sure where to start, I recommend the Top Stations  and Genres page.

Premium and Plus are the ad-free, paid versions of Pandora that include features like a desktop program, higher audio quality, offline listening, and more. You can also get the family plan for six people. There may be discounts if you're a student or in the military.

See everywhere you can stream Pandora for links to app downloads.

Listen to Live Radio From Around the World: TuneIn

Includes thousands of live radio stations.

Stations can be favorited for easy access.

Don't have to make a user account to use the website.

Doesn't let you choose which specific songs to listen to.

TuneIn is probably the best place to listen to live radio stations over the internet. It's possible to  find local stations in your area , but you can also search over 100,000 stations from around the world.

Sort radio stations by genre to find anything from rock, ambient, and religious music to sports stations, business news, and travel podcasts. I like to look through the trending radio stations to see what other users are listening to.

TuneIn works from a web browser or desktop program on a computer and through mobile apps. Your favorite stations can be stored in your account to have access from all your devices. For more features like fewer ads, you can try TuneIn Premium for 30 days.

Stream Music Ad-Free Every Day: AccuRadio

Skip songs an unlimited number of times.

A different genre has commercial-free music every day.

A user account isn't required.

Unique genres.

Supported by advertisements on most days.

AccuRadio is like other online radio services on this list. Browse for a station by genre, or have them pick a random one if you're not sure what you want to listen to. You can also view the most popular music for inspiration. There are a handful of mobile apps so that you can listen on multiple devices.

Sign up for a free user account to hear fewer commercials, customize your channel to suit your tastes, and save channels as favorites. You can also "ban" an artist or song to stop hearing that music.

I love that, on certain days, you can listen with zero commercials without a paid account! This is awesome, and very different from most of the music sites I've used.

Some of the interesting genres available here include beautiful music, Canadian, love songs, opera, movie & TV music, and Nordic folk songs. If you make a free account, you can even blend channels together for a unique mix.

Live Local Radio: iHeartRadio

Thousands of local and international radio stations.

Make custom radio stations.

Don't need to create a user account.

Can't play songs on-demand.

The service contains advertisements.

Only a specific number of songs can be skipped per day.

iHeartRadio combines live radio and custom music streaming into one awesome website and app. You can listen to live radio stations on iHeartRadio by selecting the city and genre that you like, and it displays the stations that match your search criteria. You can also build custom stations around the songs and artists you like.

I've had a good time using the iHeartRadio mobile app because it supports a sleep timer and has an alarm to automatically play my favorite stations in the morning.

To play specific songs, replay music from the radio, listen offline, build an unlimited number of playlists, and skip more songs, you have to pay for Plus or All Access .

No-Commercial Radio: LITT Live

Premium radio with no commercials.

Stream radio stations online.

Mobile apps to listen to the radio on the go.

Clean and clutter-free website design.

Multiple ways to find new radio stations.

A limited selection of genres.

Some genres have only a couple stations.

LITT Live (formerly Dash Radio) is another internet radio website where you can stream free music. I like it because there aren't commercials, there's a link to read lyrics, and you can browse for songs by decade.

Some of the other genres include jazz, classical, world, hip-hop, pop, Latin, and country.

Apps are available on dozens of platforms, including Android and iOS.

A Different Way to Find YouTube Music: Freefy

Plays songs from YouTube.

Unlimited skips.

Lyrics for some songs.

Occasionally has trouble streaming.

Freefy is another free music streaming service you can use without making a user account. What makes this website different from the others is that it plays audio from YouTube, so it's similar to YouTube Music, detailed above, but it provides some different ways to find stuff to listen to.

For example, you can use Freefy to search through your recently played songs. YouTube provides a list, but it's not searchable. Freefy can also play all the items in your listening history.

Like YouTube Music, this service separates music by new releases and what's popular right now. There are also featured playlists and genres. Another thing I like are the playlists, which I can make public and even open up for collaboration if I want someone else to help me build a collection of songs.

The mobile app works on Android and iOS.

Music With Relevant News: LiveOne

Listen to stations made by others.

The website is easy to navigate.

The music is 100 percent free.

Subscriptions give access to additional features.

Doesn't let you choose which songs to play.

Has audio and video ads.

Can't skip an unlimited number of songs.

With LiveOne, you can create custom radio stations built around the songs, genres, and artists you enjoy. After choosing the type of music you like to listen to, this website streams similar music mixed in with the songs you suggested.

In addition to browsing through radio-like stations, which is a great way to discover new music, are all kinds of music-related news, performances, interviews, and more.

There's a Plus version with no ads, unlimited skips (free users get six per day), and maximum audio quality. The Premium version includes those features, as well as offline listening, fast-forward abilities, and the ability to play any music on demand.

LiveOne was previously called LiveXLive, and Slacker Radio before that.

Free Music Archive

The internet archive, reverbnation, the 7 best sites you can use to download free music.

  • You can find free music downloads on the internet without relying on a streaming subscription.
  • Sites like Free Music Archive, SoundCloud, and BandCamp make it easy to legally download music for free.
  •  Here are seven of the best sites to download original music from.

Subscribing to a service like Spotify , Tidal , or Apple Music means you get unlimited access to millions of songs — in many ways, it's like owning every song on Earth. But that illusion only lasts as long as you make monthly payments. If you end your subscription, you abruptly lose access to all of that music.

For a more permanent solution, you can download tracks that are yours to keep forever. And you don't have to spend a lot of money to get those tracks, because there are websites that let you legally download music for free. Here are the best free music download websites.

Founded by East Coast radio station WFMU in 2009, Free Music Archive is a clearinghouse for free original music uploaded by independent artists. It has a clean and simple interface that's easily browsable by a dozen genres and countless sub-genres. The site has its own player where you can make playlists, or you can download tracks and reuse them via a Creative Commons license.

SoundCloud is a music streaming and sharing platform that allows artists to connect with listeners and offer tracks directly to fans. While SoundCloud has paid subscription plans, you can listen to tracks on the site for free with a basic account. Moreover, artists have the option to make their tracks available for download for free, so it's possible to download some music in a variety of formats. To download a track, hover over it in the player and then click the three-dot More button. If it's downloadable, you'll see a Download file menu option.

Bandcamp has been around since 2008, serving as an online storefront for independent artists who can sell their music directly to fans. If you're a music lover, Bandcamp is like a musical candy store with content in dozens of categories from rock to reggae plus music for kids and even audiobooks. Unfortunately, Bandcamp doesn't have a way to browse for free music baked into its navigation, but it's still simple to do. To find free music at Bandcamp, search for "free downloads" and you can then browse tracks you can either simply download for free or name your own price (and you can name zero dollars).

The Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library that is on a mission to curate and catalog millions of books, music, software, websites, and more. It operates the Wayback Machine, for example, which you can use to see websites as they were at various times in the past. It also has a vast library of songs, concerts, audio books, podcasts, 78 rpm records, and more in the site's Audio Archive , where you can browse by countless filtering criteria including musical genres. Not everything here is available to download, but when music is downloadable, you have numerous file format options.

NoiseTrade is one of the unusual free music download sites you'll encounter. A subset of the Paste Magazine website, it connects artists directly to fans by letting you stream music and, in most cases, download tracks for free. And you don't get to choose individual tracks — if you want to download music, you get all the tracks in the collection from a particular artist in a single zip file. NoiseTrade features some mainstream artists in a wide range of genres, and the only thing you need to do to download tracks is provide your email address so artists can connect with you.

ReverbNation was launched in 2006 as a central hub for musicians, producers, venues and others in the music industry to collaborate and communicate. It's also a venue for music fans to discover and connect with news artists. To that end, you can browse and search for music, use the built-in player, and download tracks as well. To find music that artists have designated as free to download, use the site's search page and click the Free MP3s Required checkbox on the left. All search results will feature tracks you can download for free.

Last.fm was once a popular destination for streaming music for free in the early days of the internet, but the site discontinued its streaming services in 2014 and now serves primarily as a destination for making music recommendations based on users' listening habits. Even so, there is still a small catalog of free music here that you can legally download for free. The Download Free Music page at Last.fm has a simple, unsearchable list of 227 songs you can play and download in MP3 format. There's no indication of style or genre, so making use of this library requires some exploration.

The 9 Best Free Music Download Sites to Legally Download Music for Free

Here are several sites where you can download free music without resorting to digital piracy. Grow your digital music collection legally.

Quick Links

  • YouTube Audio Library
  • Free Music Archive
  • The Internet Archive
  • ReverbNation
  • Audio Library

Key Takeaways

  • Download free music legally from several online sources.
  • Audio Library, Free Music Archive, and YouTube Audio Library are three places you can download songs for free.
  • Many songs you download for free will come from up-and-coming or largely undiscovered artists.

Whether you need beats for a creative project or you simply want to have music files rather than streaming, you'll find plenty of websites to download music legally and for free.

1. YouTube Audio Library

The YouTube Audio Library is where you'll find lots of aesthetic music you've mostly heard in vlogs. It's mainly aimed at people who need royalty-free music for YouTube videos . With a YouTube account, you can access the library via YouTube Studio and download as many songs as you wish.

According to its terms and conditions, you can use the tracks in any YouTube video you create, including monetized ones. Besides free music tracks, the YouTube Audio Library also includes sound effects.

Hit the small Play icon to listen to each song sample. If you like what you hear, click the adjacent Download button. Attribution is not required unless the track carries a Creative Commons license.

2. Free Music Archive

The Free Music Archive has been around for many years but remains as popular as ever. Most of the free song downloads are from lesser-known artists, but occasionally, you will see a famous name pop up. Regardless, it's a great site that's similar to apps that help you discover new music .

All the tracks on the site are perfectly free to download and listen to. However, if you intend to alter the songs or use them commercially, you need to check the license associated with each recording and follow the correct attribution format.

3. Bensound

Bensound is another good place to get music. You can filter the tracks by genre and mood, such as cinematic, ambient, rock, hip-hop, and more. You can even filter the music by instrument.

As a free user, you have access to more than 80 copyright-safe tracks. The site is particularly suitable if you're looking for music for your social media videos. Just make sure you provide the attribution correctly.

If you don't like pop, rock, and other mainstream genres, you can download classical music for free at Musopen.

Musopen has recordings from some of the most famous musicians of all time. You'll find everything from Bach and Beethoven to Tchaikovsky and Holst. You can search by composer, instrument, period, and mood to locate the content you want.

The site extends beyond music downloads; it's also an online source for free sheet music and educational resources.

5. The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is useful for much more than just laughing at how bad the web looked in 1999. You can also download music for free.

The best part of the site is the Live Music Archive. It was built in partnership with etree.org and features shows and concerts from a range of leading artists. All the bands in the collection are "trade-friendly," meaning they've granted fans the right to freely trade some of their music for non-commercial means.

The library doesn't just cover music; it's also one of the best websites to download audiobooks . You'll also find public affairs talks, radio shows, and poetry readings.

6. ReverbNation

If you're an up-and-coming band, ReverbNation is a great site to sell music online . Since the site is primarily aimed at new bands, you won't find tracks from the current chart-toppers. Don't let that put you off, though.

ReverbNation has launched the careers of many top bands, including the Alabama Shakes and Imagine Dragons. That means you can be the coolest kid at school by downloading music from tomorrow's hippest artists before they become famous.

To download an artist's music, you need to create an account on the site first, head to the artist's profile, and tap the Become A Fan button. The Download icon will then appear next to the selected songs available for users to download.

Owned by Paramount Global, Last.fm is a large music website that tracks your music and recommends new songs accordingly. The site also offers a list of free music downloads. Just tap the Download icon next to the track to save it.

While you can download the music for free, it's best to only play them for your enjoyment because Last.fm's free songs cannot be used for commercial projects. They're for personal use only.

CCTrax offers free music downloads that are covered by a Creative Commons license. It specializes in electronica, dub, techno, and ambient tunes.

You can download every song on the site, and no payments are involved anywhere. However, you need to read about the Creative Commons license . You can filter the music by license type on the main page so that the tracks from the resulting list can be utilized without legal repercussions.

9. Audio Library

Audio Library is a comprehensive website to download free music from, and you can use all the tracks you find on the website in various projects. You can also download these songs for free if you only want to listen to them privately. If you use the songs elsewhere, you just need to credit the author (you'll see a prompt to do this when you download a song).

Audio Library covers music across several genres, including cinematic, dance, hip-hop, and more. You can also browse based on mood and artists. The website is very user-friendly, and you can choose to either download from the artist's website or direct from Audio Library instead.

The sites above mostly specialize in helping you download music from unknown and upcoming artists rather than current stars. It's largely inevitable, as the biggest names in music generally don't distribute music for free. If a site offers a free download of Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift's latest album, it's probably illegal.

If you want to legally download the latest mainstream singles, you still need to use paid services like Spotify. But if your goal is to discover gems by independent artists or get free songs for your YouTube videos, these free music sites will meet your needs well.

12 Legal and Free Music Download Sites

' src=

1. SoundCloud

Best Free Music Download Sites (2022)

In my experience, some artists offer you to download the MP3 track , but some redirect you to stream the music from one of the many music streaming apps. Just go ahead and search for your favorite songs, and a “Download” or “Free Download” button will appear next to the song. All in all, to legally download free music, you can surely give a shot at SoundCloud.

2. Bandcamp

Best Free Music Download Sites (2022)

Jamendo surely ranks among the best free sites to download songs legally in 2023. It’s a hub for new and independent artists , where you can stream songs and download MP3 tracks entirely for free. There is one catch, though. You need to create a free Jamendo account to download the music which is a fair ask, I would say. Apart from that, it also provides royalty-free music for commercial use, again for free. You can download royalty-free music and background tracks for your Instagram reels , YouTube Shorts , and other short videos.

Or try imagining Safiya Nygaard’s lifestyle videos without her tongue-in-cheek classical music and characterful jazzy jingles. Great music goes a long way, which is why creators want to know where they can download awesome copyright-free music for YouTube.

While you can’t just take a Bad Bunny banger and stick it in your edit, there are hundreds of websites that offer great free music to elevate your content. To save you having to search through them all, we’ve done the hard work to reveal the best free music websites for creators and YouTubers.

2024's best free music websites for creators

Finding free music has been a thorn in the side of creators since the early days of YouTube. There are loads of different music libraries and resources for content creators out there, each one offering free tracks that are safe to use across YouTube and social media.

Some have been around for ages, while other newcomers like Uppbeat are genuinely changing the game. To save you going through them all yourself, we’ve uncovered the nine best free music websites and given you all the reasons why you might (and might not!) use them to soundtrack your YouTube videos.

The Uppbeat royalty-free music website homepage

The free music platform built for creators, by creators. You bet we’re proud to shout about Uppbeat being one of the best places to find free music for your YouTube videos and social media content!

Pros: Head over to Uppbeat and you can browse a hand-picked catalog of the best free music from artists all over the world.

Better still, the platform is designed to help you find your perfect sound in seconds thanks to playlists that are based on the kind of content you create and inspired by the vibe of your videos.

Plus, Uppbeat allows you to avoid copyright issues! Anytime you download a track, you’ll receive a unique Uppbeat Credit that you can drop into your video description to guarantee you won’t have any problems, even if you monetize your videos.

So you can earn from your content, and Uppbeat’s artists also earn from their music each time their tracks are downloaded too. It’s all thanks to the platform’s ethical business model that pays artists fairly for free music.

Cons: Signing up for a free Uppbeat account allows you to download 10 free tracks every single month, which for many creators will be more than enough to soundtrack their videos, but some creators may want more.

If you upload to your channel more often and want to unlock unlimited downloads, premium tracks, Uppbeat’s exclusive sound effects library, and the ability to whitelist your YouTube channel, you’ll want to sign up to Uppbeat Premium for just $6.99 a month.

Uppbeat is completely geared towards creators. When you download a track, the Uppbeat license covers all creator platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok, including sponsored and affiliated content. But if you’re looking for music to use in larger productions and paid advertising, you’ll have to sign up to Uppbeat Business .

The Bensound royalty-free music website homepage

One of the OG royalty-free music sites! Bensound is the work of French musician Benjamin Tissot, who has spent the last decade creating tracks to share with the creator community through his basic music website.

Pros: Bensound allows you to download some tracks for free and use them in your videos or live streams. All you need to do is find the track you want, follow the licensing terms and credit Bensound in the video description.

Cons: While Bensound has a variety of different genres and moods to choose from, the catalog of less than 500 tracks is significantly smaller than Uppbeat and many of the other websites on this list. If you don’t find what you’re looking for straight away, you may have to look elsewhere!

The Incompetech royalty-free music website homepage

Chances are you’ve already heard some of Incompetech’s small but mighty catalog! American composer Kevin MacLeod has been helping the creator community for years by making his music available for free through Creative Commons licenses .

Pros: You can download and use some of the most recognisable tracks across platforms like YouTube and TikTok, for no cost whatsoever. Music is listed by genre and all you need to do is credit MacLeod in your video’s description.

Cons: Many of Kevin MacLeod’s best tracks are already available on Uppbeat alongside a full catalog of amazing artists and different genres. You can save some time by using Uppbeat’s super slick navigation to find the perfect sounds for your project, instead of searching across two sites.

The YouTube Audio Library homepage

The YouTube Audio Library is YouTube’s very own catalog of free stock music for creators to use in their videos. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with being able to download your favorite songs from YouTube Music free of charge!

Pros: All you need to do is head to the extensive library of over 150,000 tracks within your YouTube Studio to start picking out free music for your videos. Talk about convenience!

Cons: The flipside of having such a wide variety to choose from is that it can take time to find that perfect song, especially with YouTube Audio Library’s fiddly navigation and no-frills layout. Even if you persevere and find a track to use, you’ve also got to be mindful of whether you need to attribute the artist in your video description too. Use the wrong attribution and you could still get copyright strikes!

The Free Music Archive royalty-free music website homepage

Free Music Archive was founded in 2009 by independent radio station WFMU to give creators like you access to original music that its artists have made available using Creative Commons licenses .

Pros: As a champion of independent artists, Free Music Archive have a wide range of music styles to choose from. You’ll also need to sift through loads of tracks to find the right one for you though, thanks to Free Music Archive’s simplistic search options.

Cons: Make sure you check what type of Creative Commons license applies to each track you download. Some music might not be available to use in videos or commercial projects!

Examples of public domain music available on YouTube

If you’ve searched for free tracks on YouTube, you’ve more than likely come across channels offering ‘public domain’ music. This is when musicians give up the rights to their intellectual property, meaning you’re free to use their tunes in your videos.

Pros: The great thing about public domain music is that there are absolutely no restrictions to how you can use it! Plus, you can find some pretty iconic works from old masters like Beethoven and Mozart in the public domain, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Cons: If that sounds too good to be true, finding specific recordings that are in the public domain can be tricky. There are often newer versions that are protected by copyright, and some of the more well-known tracks can also be targeted by fraudsters, resulting in bogus copyright claims.

Search results for royalty-free music on Soundcloud

As well as finding copyright-free music on YouTube, popular music platform Soundcloud can also be a great source of free music from starting-out artists and established beatmakers.

Pros: Lots of artists upload their tracks directly to Soundcloud with Creative Commons licenses allowing you to use their music. Simply search for ‘ royalty-free music ’ on Soundcloud to start exploring.

Cons: Creative Commons licenses can range from giving you complete freedom to use a track right through to very specific restrictions, such as not being able to monetize your videos. It’s also worth paying attention to how each track needs to be credited in your video description so that you avoid getting any copyright strikes.

Lots of artists get started on Soundcloud, but they could later be signed up by a label or register their music with Content ID at some point in the future. If this happens, you could end up receiving copyright claims on any of your videos that use their music.

The NoCopyrightSounds channel on YouTube

Millions of creators turn to YouTube to try and find free music for their videos. Search and you’ll see there are several big channels offering copyright-free music that you can download straight from their video descriptions. The most popular of them all is NoCopyrightSounds (NCS) with over 30 million subscribers!

Pros: You can explore their roster of high-quality independent artists by checking out different genre-specific playlists. Simply find the track you want and click the link in the video description to download.

Cons: NCS often only uploads one track per YouTube video, so browsing their music can be time consuming as you have to load each track one-by-one - not to mention having to sit through YouTube ads!

It’s also worth noting that the NCS catalog only focuses on electronic music, so if you’re looking for cinematic soundscapes, acoustic tracks, or basically any other genre, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

9. Chillhop Music

The Chillhop Music homepage

You may well have found yourself listening to one of Chillhop Music’s hugely successful YouTube streams. Did you know you can also download their tracks to use in your videos?

Pros: Sign up for Chillhop’s Creator’s Program to connect your YouTube channel and you can download tracks to use in your content by putting a simple credit link in the video description.

Cons: While Chillhop does work with some talented artists, you can probably guess that their tracks are limited to, well, chillhop music. Another thing to factor in is that you can only use their tracks on YouTube and Twitch, meaning that if you want to share your latest video on other channels, such as Instagram, TikTok, or in your podcasts, you’ll need to use a different service.

Downloading free music for videos: Your FAQs answered

Uppbeat's free music website for creators.

Why can’t I use any music on YouTube?

If you want to use music in your YouTube videos, you’ll need to get permission from the artist first. Chances are you don’t have The Weeknd or Miley Cyrus on speed dial and, without their permission, you won’t be able to use their tracks.

All copyrighted music is registered with YouTube. It uses a clever fingerprinting system called Content ID to flag when videos contain copyrighted music. So it can tell if you use Miley’s music to soundtrack your video and, if you don’t have permission, you’ll get a copyright claim.

What are YouTube copyright claims?

If you use copyrighted music or video without permission in your content, YouTube’s Content ID system will automatically flag your video and send you a Content ID claim.

There are a few things that might happen if you get a Content ID claim and it all depends on the copyright owner. They might allow you to use their content in exchange for running ads on your video. Or the other extreme is that they could ask YouTube to take down your video.

It goes without saying that you want to avoid having your videos taken down from YouTube! The last thing you want is to receive a copyright strike or demonetization because you’ve used the wrong track, which is why finding copyright-free music is so important.

What is copyright-free music?

In a nutshell, copyright-free music is music that is not protected by copyright. But the term is more widely used in the creator space to describe tracks that can be used without the threat of copyright issues on YouTube.

You can check out our ultimate guide to find out more about copyright-free music , royalty-free music and music licensing .

7 of the best sites for royalty-free, public domain music

Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones next to a laptop, mouse, and coffee cup.

Music is copyrighted until it isn’t. Eventually, titles enter the public domain, which means they are free to use and download for any purpose.

There are a lot of websites that showcase and provide access to public domain music, but to be clear, they differ from free music streaming services like SoundCloud , ReverbNation, and Free Music Archive, which offer music that is owned my artists, but offered up for your listening pleasure for free.

As for public domain music sites, we have a few favorites that we’re going to get into below, but first we’re going to give you a bit of context into what public domain music is. The distinction lies in that public domain music is yours to keep and use as you wish.

When does music become public domain?

In the U.S., most music created before January 1, 1978, has copyright protection for 95 years from the date of first publication . For music created after that date, the copyright exists for the songwriter’s life, plus 70 years. In simpler terms, music copyrights can last a very long time, but eventually, they expire, and the music enters the public domain. Here, then,  are seven public domain music sites .

Open Music Archive

The Open Music Archive is a resource for musicians, researchers, and music enthusiasts. This initiative focuses on facilitating the sharing and liberation of music while navigating copyright regulations to breathe life into forgotten or lesser-known works.

At its essence, the Open Music Archive strives to gather, preserve, and openly distribute music recordings in the public domain. Beyond being a collection, this digital repository makes a statement about the accessibility of cultural treasures and advocates for the idea that music, a universal language, should be freely accessible to all.

Established by artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White, the Open Music Archive is a passion project for its creators. Their goal is to reintroduce the public to the sounds of yesteryear by creating an asset for learning, artistic expression, and progress. The Open Music Archive challenges views on ownership and copyright within the music realm by digitizing and providing music that no longer carries copyright constraints.

The Open Music Archive, a living entity in evolution, continues to grow each year as more recordings join the public domain. Visitors can delve into an array of genres, each one a testament to the rich history of music. The archive offers a unique opportunity for music enthusiasts to connect with the past via everything from jazz and blues melodies full of emotion to classical masterpieces that transcend time.

The assortment consists of more than songs; it also encompasses a range of recordings that provide a distinct glimpse into the sounds of bygone eras.

Users can explore this collection by filtering their searches based on composer names, time periods, genres, or nationalities, among other criteria.

In addition to sheet music collections, IMSLP has diversified its content to include recordings. This feature allows users to listen to performances of pieces while navigating through the scores. We're willing to bet that one of the best features for sports fans and the most innovative is the multi-feed viewing function that allows you to watch up to four games on a single screen. Forget trying to buy and install a ton of TVs in your game room or living room. Now, you only need one. The only equipment you need to make it happen is from Dish TV, which will install for free, either same-day or next-day at the latest after you subscribe. As for what games and networks are available, all your favorites are here, like NBA TV, ESPN, NBC Sports, ABC, and TNT. You can even watch college basketball games when the season is going. Don't dribble endlessly in the backcourt; subscribe and get your equipment installed today so you can watch all the big games.

Why's Dish TV so great for basketball and sports fans?

If you’ve been waiting to buy a 75-inch TV for less, check out the TV deals that Best Buy has to offer at the moment. Today, you can buy a Samsung 75-inch DU7200 4K TV for $700 instead of $750. It may only be a modest $50 discount but that’s mostly because $750 for a 75-inch TV from a reputable brand was already great value. Being able to go even further and save $50 on it simply sweetens the deal. If you’re keen to upgrade to a delightfully huge 75-inch TV, this is a good opportunity to do so. Here’s what to expect from the TV.

Why you should buy the Samsung 75-inch DU7200 4K TV One of the best TV brands you can buy from, Samsung makes sure that all its TVs are packed with the best features possible for the price. With the Samsung 75-inch DU7200 4K TV, you get PurColor which provides you with a wider spectrum of colors than traditional RGB models. It also has Mega Contrast which automatically adjusts the brightness and contrast as you watch, reducing the difference between light and dark scenes so that objects on screen stand out more.

Just days after Spotify CEO Daniel Ek referred to "the cost of creating content being close to zero," the company he leads is increasing prices. Again. Spotify today announced that it's going to be more expensive — "adjusting Premium prices" is the official line — in the U.S. so "that we can continue to invest in and innovate on our product features and bring users the best experience."

Here's the bottom line on the new Spotify cost:

The 6 Best Free Ringtone Apps and Websites for iPhone

Quick links, ringtones for iphone: music, melofania.club.

Tired of hearing the monotonous Marimba ringtone every time you get a phone call? Fortunately, there are several apps and websites where you can find a variety of new ringtones for your iPhone without needing to purchase them.

If you're looking for an app that only features free ringtones, the Ringtones for iPhone: Music app, developed by Jerome Melis, is your best bet! While the app being completely free to use is certainly impressive, it features more than eight hundred popular ringtones and has an incredibly easy-to-use interface.

Upon launching the app, you'll see ringtones classified as Most Popular . When you dig deeper, you'll find ringtones divided into various categories like Funny Ringtones, Summer Selection, Christmas, Old phone ringtones, and much more. Unfortunately, to access these ringtones, you need to watch an ad or rate the app on the App Store, but it's certainly better than paying money!

Once you find a ringtone you like, the app allows you to install it using GarageBand or iTunes (for which you'll need a computer). If you find a ringtone that you like that you'd like to save to view later, simply tap the Heart icon next to it to save it to your favorites.

Download: Ringtones for iPhone: Music (Free)

With over ten thousand licensed ringtones to choose from, the Tuunes app, developed by WhitePoint GmbH, is a worthwhile option. The app sorts available ringtones into various categories, like Latest Chart Remixes, Around The World, and TikTok Classics.

You can also view ringtones and alarms sorted into genres by tapping the Genre button below the search bar. You'll now see different genres, like Alternative, Blues, Children's Music, Comedy, and more. Similarly, if you'd like to view free ringtones, tap the Free button below the search bar.

Tuunes allows you to create ringtones without needing iTunes or your computer. Once you download a ringtone, all you need to do now is follow the on-screen instructions to set it as your iPhone's ringtone using GarageBand . If you'd like to recognize who's calling simply by hearing the ringtone, the app also lets you assign unique ringtones to each of your contacts.

While Tuunes has a decent collection of ringtones that you may download for free, you'll unfortunately need to collect coins to purchase the more popular ones. When you download the app initially, you're granted 75 coins. You can win 15 coins daily by watching an ad and win 30 coins by playing a quiz. If you'd like more, you'll unfortunately need to pay.

Download: Tuunes (Free, subscription available)

While Tuunes has an easy-to-use interface, the amount of free ringtones available is unfortunately limited. The Ringtones app is a great alternative if you're looking for a wider selection of ringtones for free. Ringtones are categorized into various sections, like Christmas, ASMR, Alerts, Animals, Asian, and more.

The Ringtones app also shows the most popular ringtones in a separate section called Hottest Ringtones . The app also allows you to make and set a custom ringtone on your iPhone for free. You can do so by tapping the Editor tab at the bottom of the screen.

If you want to set an audio recording as your ringtone, simply tap Recorder . Otherwise, you can use the Ringtone Maker to import an audio file from iCloud, your device's gallery, or the app's list of ringtones. Once you import audio, you can tweak its pitch and tempo, use the app's built-in equalizer to edit the audio, trim it, and more.

Once you're satisfied, you can simply export it to GarageBand and set it as your ringtone. Like Ringtone Maker, you can also assign separate ringtones to individual contacts.

Download: Ringtones (Free, subscription available)

You've probably heard of Zedge if you've searched the web for good ringtones. From Bollywood to Hip-Hop ringtones, finding a ringtone that you vibe with using the Zedge app is no difficult task.

While the app has a wide collection of free ringtones available for download, you may need to watch an ad to unlock some of them. Similarly, you may need to purchase Zedge Credits to download exclusive ringtones.

You can use the app to set any sound you like as your notification tone or a ringtone. Once you find a tone you like, you just need to tap the Download icon and choose Set on Device . You can then use GarageBand to set the tone as your ringtone.

If you don't want to use the app, you can use Zedge's web app in any browser. Similar to the app, you can download any tone you like by simply hitting the Download button. However, you'll need to transfer the ringtone to your iPhone if you're accessing the site on a computer.

Download: Zedge (Free, subscription available)

MeloFania is another website with a great selection of trending songs you can use as ringtones for your iPhone. However, what makes the website stand out is that it lets you extract audio from YouTube besides uploading a song of your choice.

Unlike the sites and apps listed above, the ringtones on MeloFania aren't sorted by categories. So, you'll have to rely on the search bar and dig around to find a ringtone you like. If you want to download a ringtone from a certain artist, there's also an option to browse artists by alphabet.

If you decide to create your own ringtone by uploading a tune or extracting one from a YouTube video, the platform allows you to clip the desired part, adjust the volume, and add fade-in or fade-out effects. Once you're satisfied, you can download the ringtone as an M4R file.

While Zedge and Melofania both have a great collection of ringtones, I noticed that neither website is updated as frequently as I'd like. As a result, I couldn't find trending songs to set as my ringtone. If you're someone who likes to have viral songs as your ringtone, Audiko will undeniably be your best friend. Like most other sites, Audiko categorizes its tunes into sections like Country, Pop, K Pop, Jazz, and more.

If you want a song by a particular artist, type the artist's name in the search bar. To find trending songs, click the three horizontal lines and select Collections from the dropdown menu. Here, you'll not only find trending songs but also various alterations of them to set as your ringtone. For instance, you may find the TikTok version of the original song, the sped-up version, etc.

While Audiko has an app on the Google Play Store, iPhone users need to rely on the website in Safari or any other popular iOS browser they prefer. Once you find your desired ringtone, you can download it to your computer as a M4R file and export it to your iPhone.

Whether you're looking for a fun tune to set as a ringtone to make sure you never miss a call or are looking for more subtle ringtone options than what Apple offers, I'm sure you'll be able to find your next ringtone easily using the apps and sites above!

Spotify is raising prices for the second time in two years, upping the monthly rate for its ad-free premium plan by $1 starting in July.

When the new price of $11.99 takes effect, it will be 20% higher than it was in 2022. In a blog post , the Sweden-based streaming audio company said it is making the move in order to “continue to invest in and innovate on our product features and bring users the best experience.”

Taylor Swift Does It Again, Tops Billboard 200 Album Chart With New Record

Taylor swift breaks yet another record in the uk, after a historical week on spotify.

The previous round of price increases was introduced last July .

Over the past couple of years, Spotify has been leveraging its market position by raising prices while also streamlining its operations, trimming expenses and undergoing layoffs. It has also stepped back from a range of pricey investments in podcast talent, shifting to a more creator-focused model and sharing certain rights to previously exclusive hosts like Joe Rogan.

In the first quarter, the company’s premium subscriber tally jumped 14% over the prior-year period to reach 239 million. There are nearly twice as many monthly users of the company’s free, ad-supported service.

As the news of the price increase was breaking, a new report from research firm Antenna also found that Spotify’s churn rate remains strikingly low at around 2%. Streaming companies all prize low churn given the cost of acquiring and keeping customers. The 2% churn rate is comparable with that of Netflix, the standard-bearer in streaming.

Investors responded favorably to the latest hikes, boosting Spotify shares 5% in pre-market trading Monday.

Recent Music Theory grad wins award for analysis of CBS 'Survivor' theme songs

Micah roberts' paper analysis won the 2024 patricia carpenter emerging scholar award from mtsnys.

headshot of Rebecca Butts

Recent CCM alum Micah Roberts (MM Music Theory, '24) won the 2024 Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award from the Music Theory Society of New York State (MTSNYS) for his paper analysis of the theme songs to seasons of CBS' Survivor . The award comes with a cash prize and promise of publication in the Society’s journal,  Theory and Practice.

Micah Roberts. Photo provided by MTSNYS.

Titled  "Ancient Voices”: A Hypermetrical and Orchestrational Analysis of the Theme Songs to Seasons of CBS’s Survivor , Roberts' paper explores the reality TV show's attempt at authentically replicating the diverse musical traditions of the regions featured in the first 26 seasons:

"In the worst case, some later themes merely imitate a stereotypical 'island' sound, having no connection to the musical styles of the filming area at all. This homogenization, whether intentional or not, based on where each season is filmed, questions the entire 'authenticity' of the music being presented. The American viewership will likely assume the music heard is an authentic cultural representation, so a discrepancy here is particularly harmful. This issue with  Survivor ’s music also reflects broader issues in media representation, where complex cultural identities are often distilled into simplistic, familiar tropes."

Roberts presented his paper during CCM Music Theory and Musicology Society's Graduate Student Research Conference, held on March 1-2, 2024.  Read the full abstract listed in the 2024 conference schedule . Roberts served as the secretary on the Executive Board of MTMS at CCM.

The Music Theory Society of New York State both supports and encourages pre-professionals in their pursuit of a career in music theory with an Emerging Scholar Award for the best student paper at the Annual Meeting. The award, which was renamed the Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award in 2004, carries a cash prize and promise of publication in the Society’s journal,  Theory and Practice . Both the oral and written version of the paper are taken into consideration. Members of the 2024 Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award committee included Alex Reed, (chair, Ithaca College); Kofi Agawu (CUNY Graduate Center); Tomoko Deguchi (Winthrop University); Kristi Hardman (UNCC); Kyle Hutchinson (Colgate University), Philip Stoecker ( ex officio , Hofstra University).

Previous winners of the award are listed on the MTSNYS website:  https://mtsnys.org/patricia-carpenter-emerging-scholar-award/ .
