There's a reason 75 million people visit Orlando annually, and it isn't just the mouse. Don't get us wrong. Disney World is incredible and deserves a place on any theme park lover’s bucket list, but Orlando is so much more than its theme parks. It’s an ever-evolving city with vibrant parks, public art and award-winning restaurants. And that’s before you get to amazing day trips to the Kennedy Space Center or New Smyrna Beach . 

I have family near Orlando and I’ve visited dozens of times through the years, usually for a week at a time. I’ve come to love this special place. Whether it’s your first trip to Orlando or you’re looking for something to do outside the theme parks, our expert guide to Orlando will help you make the most of your trip. 

When should I go to Orlando? 

There’s no wrong time to visit Orlando , but here are a few facts to inform your decision. First, no matter the time of year, holidays are crowded and expensive (this includes the days framing the actual holiday). There’s also the rainy season from May to October. Luckily, in a place as lovely as Florida, the rainfall is intense but mercifully brief. 

Hurricane season is from June through November. In recent years, weather systems like Hurricane Ian have caused theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios to close for multiple days. If you’re visiting Orlando during hurricane season, it’s best to book flexible airfare, lodging, rental car reservations, etc.  

The high tourist season in Orlando is from March to April and June to August. Kids are typically out of school for spring and summer breaks, so the big attractions like theme parks are often crowded. Humidity is high, and temperatures are often in the 90s. 

The shoulder season in Orlando is in May and September through November. In May, temperatures reach the mid to high 80s, and after the sweltering summer, they drop to the upper 70s in November. During the shoulder season, you’ll usually find better deals on lodging. 

December is usually the low season (excluding Christmas through early January when the kids are on holiday break). The temperatures are cooler but exceedingly pleasant, with averages in the middle 70s. This is the time of year when you’ll usually get the best pricing as long you avoid school breaks and holidays.

How many days do you need to see Orlando? 

Although you can easily spend longer and not regret it, the average visitor to Orlando spends 5-7 nights. A stay of this length ensures you’ll have time to visit the theme parks (if that’s on your itinerary), plus explore downtown Orlando and some Florida beaches. 

Is it easy to get around in Orlando? 

Most long-distance travelers fly into Orlando International Airport. If you’re staying at a Disney area hotel and don’t plan on spending much time outside the resort, you might find it cheaper to take the Mears Connect shuttle over an Uber or rental car, although this largely depends on your group size. The shuttle operates 24/7. 

If you’re a Florida local, the recently debuted Brightline offers fast train service connecting Orlando to cities like Palm Beach , Fort Lauderdale and Miami . Alternatively, the Sun Rail offers train service with stops in Poinciana (about half an hour from Disney World), downtown Orlando, Kissimmee and DeBary. 

Downtown Orlando has an excellent public transportation system. LYMMO provides free Bus Rapid Transit service seven days a week to major downtown destinations like Lake Eola Park or the Bob Carr Theater . The Lymmo does not provide service to the airport or theme parks. Or, enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and utilize Orlando’s bike and scooter share program .

What are the top things to do in Orlando? 

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Orlando has theme parks. Walt Disney World , Universal Studios , Legoland , etc, are all in the area. If these attractions are the reason for your visit, that’s wonderful. However, there are a lot of things to do in Orlando outside the theme parks. 

Embrace downtown Orlando 

Don’t make the mistake of skipping downtown Orlando on your visit to the Sunshine State. Lake Eola Park is the heart of the city, with a paved, wheelchair-accessible walking trail circling the lake. Colorful gardens blossom against the backdrop of the Orlando skyline while swan boats (and real swans) swim in the water. A wheelchair lift was recently installed to make it easier for people with disabilities to enter the ADA-accessible swan boats. If you’re at Lake Eloa on a Sunday, check out the Orlando Farmer’s Market, where local vendors showcase seasonal produce, arts and crafts, plants and even homemade dog treats.

A whopping 48 Orlando restaurants were honored by the Michelin Guide in 2024, so be sure to arrive hungry. For a bucket list dining experience, the intimate Natsu Omakase has just two seatings per night and flies most of its seafood in from Japan. For a casual meal, it’s hard to beat Super Rico , with Columbian dishes like Churrasco or fried green plantains topped with steak, chicken and mushrooms. 

While you’re walking around downtown, keep your eye open for public art. Orlando boasts over 900 paintings, sculptures, tapestries and mixed media displayed in its city hall, neighborhood centers, public buildings and parks. 

Visit the Harry P. Leu Gardens 

The Harry P. Leu Gardens is a 50-acre plant-life paradise. Since this is Florida, there is always something in bloom, and each trip to the gardens is different than the last. Throughout the year, roses, hibiscus, bananas, tree orchids and citrus trees fill the grounds with perfume and color. This is also home to the Historic Leu House Museum, which was originally built in 1888. Today, the mansion has been restored to offer visitors a glimpse back at the past.

Take in a Performance at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts 

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has been recognized as one of the world's most acoustically sound arts venues. The building takes up two city blocks, offering multiple performance spaces, a school of the arts, event rooms and an outdoor plaza with a welcoming lawn. An ever-changing calendar of performances includes family-friendly programming, Broadway touring productions and local theater groups. 

Geek out at Kennedy Space Center

Orlando is only 50 miles from the Kennedy Space Center , and it’s worth a side trip. You can easily spend the entire day there, so don’t short yourself on time. Attractions include encounters with real astronauts, hands-on activities like astronaut training simulators, and virtual reality experiences. Kids love it, and so do adults.

Explore New Smyrna Beach 

Drive an hour to New Smyrna Beach, where you’ll find 17 miles of sugar sand beaches, some of Florida’s best surfing waves, and a cute, walk-around-able downtown brimming with boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Nearby Blue Springs State Park is a designated manatee refuge with hundreds of manatees from mid-November through mid-March that visitors can see via a wheelchair-accessible path and viewing platform.

My favorite thing to do in Orlando might seem a little cheesy if you’ve never been inside, but I always recommend Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition . Yes, there are Titanic museums elsewhere, but that doesn’t make this one any less worthwhile since each exhibition holds different artifacts. This one has more than 300 artifacts recovered from the wreckage and 500 personal items from passengers. Costumed actors wander through full-scale room recreations of the Titanic’s interior, pulling you into an eerie, immersive experience. A regular roster of programs includes dinner galas, formal teas and guide tours with rotating themes.

I have visited London several times, and yet it is amazing how I find something new to explore every time I visit the capital city. My visit last autumn too did not fail to surprise me. With the hustle and bustle and the rich royal history, London city has a lot to offer. Since I just had a few days to spare, I wanted to make the best out of this trip.

Although vast and sprawling, I decided to visit most of the city on foot this time. Now since in my previous visits I had seen most of the tourist-y attractions already, I wanted to take the path less travelled this time to discover the hidden gems of the city. The last time I had been to London, I had missed out on the chance to visit the chock full of literature and history that awaited me in the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. Being a student of literature, visiting the place where the Bard of Avon once enacted the plays he wrote was a spellbinding moment. And guess what? I also caught a staging of the Macbeth before I left the place. Before heading towards the Hyde Park tube station, I grabbed some of London’s famous Fish ‘n’ Chips from the oldest food market of the city, the Borough Market. From Hyde Park to Tower Hill in under fifteen minutes by Tube, I began exploring the Tower of London. It was there that I heard a guard speaking about where he hailed from. A quick conversation with Peter, I had gotten intrigued to know more about his village – Suffolk in Lavenham. I asked him how to get there and Peter, being the quintessential helping guide that Londoners are known to be, told me that I could either take a car from central London. Or I could wait for the next day and take the train from Liverpool to Sudbury and then take the bus route 753 and reach in around two hours. Having nothing to do, I spent that day in the British Museum and walking on Oxford Street.

The next morning, I started my journey to the quaint village of Suffolk. I had picked up a book about the village where I learned that the village had once housed Henry III in 1257. And a bonus for all the Harry Potter fans – the village also starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ as Godric’s Hollow where Hermoine and Harry are seen to be visiting Bathilda Bagshot. On reaching the village, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the picture-perfect silhouette of prosperous medieval England with all the half-timbered houses. The lime-washed and brightly coloured buildings added an idyllic element to the village with the De Vere House standing out from the rest. Adding to the rustic touch was the fifteenth-century St Peter Church with its soaring height of a 141ft tower. The autumn breeze welcomed me as I walked on the leaf-covered high streets. I saw some young guns cycling around in a park and called out to them for directions. My stay for the trip was an Air BnB home-stay where I had to put up with an elderly couple – the Havishams. I still remember how on reaching the gate of the house, I had caught a waft of crumpets and hot scones. After an exchange of banalities followed by me gorging on the scones, I had found out about the hidden gems from Mr Havisham who happened to be quite a cheerful talker. He told me what a must-visit Hadley’s was when in Suffolk. I had then set out with a local map to find the hidden gem. On reaching I had found that Hadley’s was a cutesy ice cream shop, almost run down, run by an old lady. Here Rebecca told me how the ice cream parlour was opened back in the 1850s and was still known for their hand-made sorbets.

Like the sorbet, my stay in Suffolk had been a sweet experience – a trip of revelation. The tour – with all the lonely walks – had in an inexplicable way helped me to get my perspectives right. It isn’t the exotic locales and the flight above the clouds that make travelling my drug. Rather, it is little but beautiful discoveries like Suffolk that feed my wanderlust. Thank you, London. Thank you for being a wonderful experience, once again.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

A VISIT TO AN AMUSEMENT PARK

It was one boring Saturday, just a few days after my summer holidays began. I had travelled to Toronto to stay with my mum. She is an artist and she wanted me to help her develop a collection for her next art exhibition. As always, if I wasn’t reading a novel, I would be busy painting or drawing. But that day was kind of different. I sat on the couch at corner, held my laptop, read several art blogs and posted comments. I tried social media, even funny posts could not move me. I was just so uneasy and bored. Was it the heat or what? I couldn’t really figure it out.

“Paulette and I are going to the amusement park at Vaughan. Want to come?” mum asked. She stood leaning against the wall, dressed in denim jeans and a loose white chiffon top. She loved heels but that day she was in oxfords. Her hair was loosely held in a bun and her beautiful watery hazel eyes looked directly at me, behind sunglasses though. She was just like a model awaiting a photo shoot. “You look great ma!” I could not help but comment with an awe expression on my face “and yes, I am going with you guys.” I replied.

Canada’s Wonderland Amusement Park was our destination. At first I felt like amusement parks were for kids but that day I got the best shock of my life. Trust me it is fun and adventurous. It feels like going to the moon and back. Paulette, my mother’s best friend, was particularly out of control. All she did was take photos, run around the vast parking lot and shout, “Oh girls, I am so excited!” We finally bought tickets, got a map and went in.

There were too many rides in the park. We started with the Flight Deck. For a moment, I felt my heart throb hard against my chest at an increasing pace as if it wanted to come out. Cold sweat trickled slowly down my spine. The palm of my hands got wetter as seconds passed as I clung tightly to the rail. I could feel a great gush of adrenaline in my system and I did not even notice when and how I started to scream so loud like a banshee. What an experience that was! Time Warp was not so different. We just had to lie on our bellies instead of sitting. All I could do was close my eyes, hold my teeth together and pray that the whole affair ends so quickly. I could not handle any more circular movements. The little strength I had left was preserved for the Leviathan, the longest roller coaster in the park. That was the climax, the mother of all rides. I left that place momentarily deaf, because tears blocked my ears and my eyes were slightly watery and my throat was sore from all the screaming.

A ride on the bumper cars made me feel 15 years younger. Mum opted to take photos of us as we (Paulette and I) bumped into each other’s rides. We made a lot of noise. I felt like a kid once again. After all the fun, we were really tired. It was getting late already. We had to go back home. I really had lots of fun. If being a child could give one such pleasure and happiness, I would not really wish to grow up any time soon. I promised myself to go back and cover the places I did not go to. I could not wait to brag to my friends about my experience.

Our trip started with hiking through a dense forest. The forest was full of tall trees, colorful flowers, and chirping birds. The trail was steep and rocky, and we had to be careful while walking. The forest was so dense that we could hardly see the sun, and the air was full of freshness. We had to take breaks in between to catch our breath and hydrate ourselves. As we walked, we could hear the sound of a river, and after a few hours of hiking, we finally reached the river. The river was wide and had a strong current, and we had to cross it to continue our journey. We had to be careful while crossing the river, and we held hands to maintain our balance. My family decided to go for a picnic in an amusement park. Such family events happened often but due to the pandemic situation, things changed. So I was very excited to go on a picnic after so long. WonderLaa is a well-known amusement park all over India. The theme park has a lot of thrill-seeking rides, like the Maverick, Roller Coaster, Dungeon ride among many others. 

As I lay eyes on these towering rides, I was really excited to join in the fun. The ride I found most memorable was the Recoil. India’s first reverse looping roller coaster was a thrill to ride. Dear diary, I am really happy to have experienced such an amazing time with my parents and I hope to visit again soon.

I am really glad to pen down the fun day I had today.

I was really excited to visit this famous amusement park with my friends. It was a short trip to WonderLa, the biggest, most thrilling amusement park in the city. The first look into the amusement park with those towering rides was a site to remember. My friends and I had the most fun in the Flash Tower, a 40-meter free-fall ride. As the shuttle was let go from the 40 meters height, all of us screamed out in fear and excitement. 

I spent the rest of the day ride-hoping with my friends. It was a day filled with fun and laughter. So the memories I had there are something I will always cherish and I pray that such days will always return and I get to have as much fun when I go back there.

My friend’s birthday was splendid, and I can’t wait to share the story with you.

Raj invited me over to his birthday party held at WonderLa amusement park. I was greeted by my friend in the banquet hall. After the cake cutting ceremony all of us headed to a day filled with unlimited rides for as long as we wanted. Recoil, Flash tower, The Maverick and other such rides were full of thrill. I would definitely ride the Recoil on my next visit.

The party ended with a small magic show. The magician performed many outstanding tricks that left us all spellbound and curious. After the show ended I knew it was time to get back home, I thanked my friend for the wonderful time I had and I wished to come back here to experience such a thrilling day again.

I had an amazing visit to this amusement park with all my classmates.

My class was informed that we were going to visit WonderLa, which is one of the most well known amusement parks in the city. It was a wish come true. The rides there were amazing with kids my age playing all around. All of my classmates joined in the fun as well. My most memorable ride there was the Equinox. This daredevil ride at its peak position traveled upside down from a height of 16 meters from the ground, and everyone should at least experience this thrill once. 

There were also rides like crazy cars, where we bummed against each other in our cars and all I saw was my friends laughing and enjoying together. Such rides made my school visit to this amusement park very memorable and I wish to visit as soon as I can.

See inside the first ultra-accessible theme park 'for everybody': Morgan’s Wonderland

It takes more than guts to ride a zip line. 

It also takes things many people take for granted, like bodily control and the ability to breathe independently.

But not at Morgan’s Wonderland , the world’s first “ultra-accessible, fully inclusive” theme park, in San Antonio, Texas.

Its new Rocket’s Sky Flight Adventure features a semi-private loading area for guests who need to transfer out of wheelchairs, specially designed seats and harnesses that can support guests lacking upper body control, a place to hang oxygen tanks right on the ride vehicle, and two operating speeds with extra smooth braking available for guests who may be more fragile. 

“We made sure that (the park) was built for everyone, but with a thought process to ensure that they could enjoy it just like anybody else. That's the key," Morgan’s Wonderland founder Gordon Hartman told USA TODAY.

More than one in four U.S. adults have some disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Morgan’s Wonderland is setting the bar for the entire attractions industry on inclusion and accessibility.

What is the story behind Morgan's Wonderland?

Morgan’s Wonderland was inspired by an experience its founder witnessed on a family vacation in 2006.

Hartman's daughter Morgan has a rare condition called Tatton-Brown-Rahman syndrome , which the National Institutes of Health describes as an overgrowth and intellectual disability syndrome. “ One of the effects of it in her particular case is her cognitive level is that of about a 4- or 5-year-old,” Hartman explained. 

They were hanging out by a pool when Morgan, then 12, noticed some kids playing with a ball nearby.

“After kind of looking at it for a while, she hit the ball. And when she hit the ball, those children – very nice children – grabbed their ball and got out of the pool real quick,” Hartman recalled. “They were scared. The reason I’m going to use the word scared is because they didn't know why Morgan was reacting or came to them the way she did versus saying, ‘Hey, guys, I just want to play.’ She couldn't verbalize that … That was her way to say, ‘Can I be included?’ “

The interaction stuck with Hartman, who a year earlier had sold his successful real estate empire and decided to spend the second part of his career serving people with disabilities. 

“I started thinking, ‘Well why couldn't we develop a place where those with and without special needs could come together and play in an atmosphere that everybody feels comfortable?’ ” Hartman said. 

Morgan’s Wonderland was created to be that place.

Is Morgan's Wonderland only for people with disabilities?

No. Only about 20% of guests have disabilities, like Emma Rodriguez’s daughter Melanie.

“Our 6-year-old has a lot of sensory issues because of her autism, and she's scared of a lot of things, and they pretty much customize this place to fit the entire family.” Rodriguez said on a field trip with her 4-year-old, while Melanie was in school. “The littlest things were so well thought out that it fits everybody.”

Everyone has the same access, but there is one added benefit for guests who aren’t disabled. “It’s a learning opportunity,” Hartman said. 

“I think that's amazing because people usually don't understand , especially with autism, you know the meltdowns,” Rodriguez said. “They'll take it as the kid is being bratty, the kid is just not being parented correctly, the kid just needs to get over it. But here, you’re able to see from Down syndrome to physical disabilities to all kinds of disabilities, and you're able to see how well each kid does in every single ride because there's something for everybody.”

Selya Santillan-Masse brought her 2-year-old, Petra, to Morgan’s Wonderland partly for that very reason. “For her to get that experience with other people with special needs and getting her to ask questions respectfully and to not ignore or to point and think like, ‘They're different. That's bad. That's weird.’ but ‘They're different, and I'm different, and here we are having fun.’ ”

“I actually used to be an assistant teacher in a special needs high school classroom, and this is just groundbreaking,” she added. “It's so needed.”

How much does it cost to get into Morgan's Wonderland?

Single-day admission to Morgan’s Wonderland costs $24 for most guests ages 14 to 61. It’s $16 for kids ages 3 to 13 and adults over age 61.

There’s also a bundled rate available for access to both Morgan’s Wonderland and its equally accessible neighboring water park, Morgan’s Inspiration Island , which opens for the season on Friday.

Admission to both is free for guests with disabilities. 

“It's been our policy from the beginning, and part of the reason for that is because we don't want that to be an economic barrier,” Hartman said, aware of all the expenses that come along with medical complexities. 

“Morgan is one of the lucky ones because she has the doctors. She has a therapist. She has an incredible caregiver. She has a home that she can live in. She has two loving parents. She has all those different things. That's really truly more of an exception than the rule when it comes to individuals with special needs,” he said. “Morgan shouldn't have those things just because we have means and we have access. Everybody ought to have that.”

How many rides are at Morgan's Wonderland?

Morgan’s Wonderland spans 25 acres of San Antonio and features “more than 25 ultra-accessible accessible rides, playscapes, and interactive elements,” according to the park. Only a portion of those are rides, four of which are new this year.

The zip line is the only ride that requires guests to transfer from wheelchairs. Guests can roll right onto other rides like the ferris wheel, train and new 4-D theater. Hartman noted the company that made the 4-D theater had never been asked to make wheelchair accessible motion-simulated platforms before. 

“Before, when someone was in a wheelchair, they just sat and watched,” he said. “We asked them to actually work with us to where we could put a wheelchair on a platform to where those people would have the same feeling. They had been around 30 years and no one had ever asked them to do it. Now they're doing it, they're saying, ‘Hey, we want to do this in other places now.’ That's how it will start to really move forward.”

What’s next for Morgan’s? 

Many other ride manufacturers, theme parks and others have turned to Morgan’s Wonderland for guidance on accessibility and inclusion since the park’s opening in 2010. Just this year Hartman, his wife Maggie, and daughter Morgan were inducted into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame. 

But Morgan’s, the nonprofit organization behind the Morgan’s Wonderland, is looking at an even bigger picture. In addition to the park and water park, it’s started a camp , sports complex , and Multi-Assistance Center , which helps people with disabilities with a variety of needs. It’s working on opening an ambulatory surgical center, a care facility for kids with acute needs, a fitness center, and an institute to teach outside groups how to become more accessible.

In years to come, it’s planning to open the first of what it hopes will be a series of fully “accessorized” hotels that are open to all but specifically designed to accommodate access needs in every room. It’s also in talks to open a second Morgan’s Wonderland, which would be built by Morgan’s but operated by another company.

“We don't think of this only as a moment,” Hartman said. “We think of this almost as a movement now.”
