Profile image of IJARW Research Publication

2020, IJARW

Students' academic performance embodies an essential part of the constellation of factors determinant of student success. Also, it plays a very significant role in education, primarily as a concrete tool to assess the student's learning process. Psychologists and researchers have attempted to comprehend how students vary in processing, retaining, and retrieving learning information and have used various personality, attitudinal, cognitive styles, and ability measures. Thus, this study's primary purpose was to determine the students' study attitudes, study habits, and academic performance. Further, this examined the influence of study attitudes and study habits on their academic performance. The study respondents were the senior high school students in a Catholic School in Bulacan, Philippines. The Descriptive-correlation research method was utilized to describe the respondents' profile in terms of their study attitudes, study habits, and academic performance. A total of one hundred thirty (130) senior high school students participated in this study. The null hypothesis at .05 alpha level of significance was tested to determine the influence of study attitudes and study habits on the students' academic performance. The computed multiple regression analysis results revealed that study attitudes and study habits do not significantly affect senior high school students' academic performance.

Decolonising education has and is still an uphill task for many African countries especially those that have scars of a gruesome colonial past such as South Africa, among others. It is against this background that I argue in this paper that the language of instruction imposed through Language in Education policy has and is perpetuating the colonial legacy and bottle necking impacting negatively on cognitive and academic development of learners. Consequently, there are loud calls from various stakeholders and student bodies to decolonise education in South Africa to change the status quo. Since 1976 and later on 2015, South African youth in higher education institutions have intensified the call to decolonise education. One of the major areas of concern towards decolonisation is language of learning and teaching (LoLT) and the language of learning materials. This call comes because even though South Africa is now a democracy that gives official status to its indigenous languages, English still enjoys hegemony in all areas including and especially in education as the LoLT from grade 4 up to tertiary education. This translates to a betrayal of the constitutional prerogative of inclusive education for all. Teacher narratives and questionnaire were data generation tools from teachers in South Africa. They articulated their experiences and their recommendations to improve the system. The data generated was processed and presented into themes. Keyword: language in education policy, language of learning, decolonisation, indigenous language, hegemony

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of unqualified teachers on their students’ academic performance in Rusoro secondary school of Gakenke district in Rwanda. The teacher is considered as the most crucial factor in implementing all instructional reforms at the grassroots level. It is a fact that the academic qualifications, knowledge of the subject matter, competence and skills of teaching and the commitment of the teacher have effective impact on the teaching and learning process. By the way, the quality of education depends on the ability, hard work and dedication of the teacher. The study was conducted under three guiding research objectives which are to analyse the effect of unqualified teachers on their students’ academic performances, to examine the characteristics of qualified teachers and to determine the major causes of poor students’ academic performance in their national examination results. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approach. Data were collected from Rusoro secondary school of Gakenke district in Rwanda. Purposive sampling procedures was adopted to sample 113 respondents including head teacher, deputy head teacher, accountant, 8 teachers and 102 students. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, documentary review and observation. The study revealed that unqualified teachers affect negatively their students’ academic performance. Hence, the need to recruit and utilize professionally qualified teachers in enhancing students’ academic performance. The study suggests that Ministry of education in collaboration with Rwanda Education Board should find proper monitoring and recruitment technique of qualified teachers in order to improve the students’ academic performances. The graduates in disciplines other than education intending to make career in teaching are required to obtain a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in addition to their existing major subjects.

This study investigated the experiences of principals, teachers, and parents about the school support for inclusive education to cater the needs of the students who have different abilities and with special education needs of the government schools in Sri Lanka. The main research methodology used in this study is Mixed methods. A survey approach and a case study approach were employed. Questionnaires, document surveys, and interviews were administered to gather information. The participants of this study represented 1AB and 1C schools in the Colombo and Gampaha districts. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistical strategies were used to analysis data. It was revealed that there is no very good attitude on inclusive education in the Sri Lankan school culture so far. The knowledge and skills of the regular teachers on inclusive education is poor. The schools have a very big responsibility to cover a very heavy curriculum during the academic year, and they are not provided sufficient funds and resources by the government for implementing inclusive education. The lack of time and resources, poor training and traditional culture hinder the proper functioning of inclusive education in the schools. Small number of regular teachers pay their attention to the students who have special needs. The students who have special needs are not well treated by the teachers as well as the school management. The schools need to be provided with sufficient resources to treat the students who have special needs. A very good culture should be developed on inclusive education in the school sector. The teachers and school management must be well trained in inclusive education.

The study suggested that the Ministry of Education should allocate sufficient budget line for community outreach as well as research and innovation in Higher Learning Institutions. The Higher Education Council (HEC), Rwanda Polytechnic (RP) and Workforce Development Authority (WDA) should consider effective teaching and learning, research and innovation, accountability in leadership thereby focusing on community outreach as the major criteria of any best higher learning institution thus reinforcing them to put more effort in the above-mentioned roles.

The role of well designed and prepared instructional materials in teaching sciences is imperative in view of the complex and abstract nature of some science subjects. It is argued that for science teachers to be more successful in their teachings, thus alleviating the unclear perception of the scientific concepts and theories. This study investigated the effectiveness of locally made instructional materials on students' academic performance and retention in science education in the eastern province of Rwanda. Two research questions were formulated, and the research design is known as a quasi-experimental research design, specifically the pretest post-test non-randomized control group design was used. The study was carried out among students of Senior Two A and B (SS2A and SS2B) in secondary schools located in the eastern province of Rwanda. Senior Two A (SS2A) students were treated as the control group, and senior two B (SS2B) were treated as the experimental group. Both groups were taught the same topic using standard instructional materials and assessed to measure their academic performance. Another topic was taught to both classes Senior Two A with standard instructional materials and Senior Two B With locally made materials. Again both groups were assessed to measure their academic performance. The sample of the study consisted of eighty-two students, forty two teachers, and four headteachers. Research instruments used in this study were observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests to provide scores. The results showed that students in the control group failed compared to students in the experimental group taught by using locally made materials. It is authoritative that course instructors should be encouraged to admire the effectiveness of locally made instructional materials so as to motivate, encourage active participation thereby improving science students' overall academic performance.

Academic performance among South African learners at any grade is worrisome to the extent that everyday academics and stakeholders are in search of answers to the scourge. Learners in the majority of the grades where reading for meaning is a prerequisite are found wanting. It has become a well-known fact that whenever, South Africa participates in international assessments, South African learners occupy the last bar of the ladder whether it is literacy or numeracy. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to examine how Reading to Learn pedagogy (RtL) can positively impact learners’ literacy development in a South African grade 8 class in a rural school. The pre-test indicated that learners had weak reading skills and after the intervention significant progress was noted in their reading abilities. Learner interviews and journal reflections and learners’ work were data generation tools. Findings were processed and analysed according to themes. Based on the findings, RtL pedagogy posits itself as a worthy intervention for reading problems in the classroom. Key words: Reading to Learn, pedagogy, literacy, reading for meaning, assessment

Learning to read is a basic skill and right that each child must be endowed with in school. Reading enables active, civic, social and economic participation. This is made possible through reading to learn. However, South Africa is faced with a daunting task to improve literacy development. From the assessments done South African learners are ranked the worst performers compared to worse off countries. Despite all, there is minimal investment in emergent literacy directed towards grade R to develop literacy behaviours. Grade R is the backbone of all the basic literacy skills that are employed in the future grades. It appears access for this cohort is only physical, past the school gate, but not epistemological. It is at the backdrop of the above that this study focused on creating opportunities for and developing Grade R learners' emergent literacy skills. As interventionist pedagogy, RtL within an interpretivist approach was applied to weave through the learning experiences of Grade R learners with story books as learning tools; and explore the extent scaffolding in RtL affects their development of emergent literacy skills. Observations and learner work samples are used as data generation tools. Basing on the emerging post intervention data, I argue that the use of RtL pedagogy develop emergent literacy skills in Grade R learners.

The study involved 36 participants who were drawn from the MVP program community since they were direct beneficiaries of the system at the time. Participatory action research (PAR) was employed and data were obtained from work processes analysis, future workshops, and observation. However, the findings for this qualitative research found-out that despite the MVP program's proclamation that it had fully-fledged computer laboratory; yet continued to register low Kyambogo University E-learning Management System (KELMS) use. The paper argues that laxity by MVP administration to follow-up KELMS use, negative attitude and digital illiteracy were factors that contributed to a low level of KELMS use. Strategies implemented were compulsory practical tasks are set for the system users, Uploading and downloading of all class activities into or from the system, involvement of KELMS administrator as KELMS usage trainer, provide new laptops to equip cohort Six MVP students, and lastly improve KELMS platform outlook by KELMS administrator for easy accessibility, flexibility, and scalability of the system.
