Goal 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all

Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being. Billions of people will lack access to these basic services in 2030 unless progress quadruples. Demand for water is rising owing to rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.

The demand for water has outpaced population growth, and half the world’s population is already experiencing severe water scarcity at least one month a year. Water scarcity is projected to increase with the rise of global temperatures as a result of climate change.

Investments in infrastructure and sanitation facilities; protection and restoration of water- related ecosystems; and hygiene education are among the steps necessary to ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030, and improving water-use efficiency is one key to reducing water stress.

There has been positive progress. Between 2015 and 2022, the proportion of the world’s population with access to safely managed drinking water increased from 69 per cent to 73 per cent.

Access to water, sanitation and hygiene is a human right. To get back on track, key strategies include increasing sector-wide investment and capacity-building, promoting innovation and evidence-based action, enhancing cross-sectoral coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders, and adopting a more integrated and holistic approach to water management.

Water is essential not only to health, but also to poverty reduction, food security, peace and human rights, ecosystems and education.

Nevertheless, countries face growing challenges linked to water scarcity, water pollution, degraded water-related ecosystems and cooperation over transboundary water basins.

What are the challenges?

In 2022, 2.2 billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water, including 703 million without a basic water service; 3.5 billion people lacked safely managed sanitation, including 1.5 billion without basic sanitation services; and 2 billion lacked a basic handwashing facility, including 653 million with no handwashing facility at all.

By managing our water sustainably, we are also able to better manage our production of food and energy and contribute to decent work and economic growth. Moreover, we can preserve our water ecosystems, their biodiversity, and take action on climate change.

Are water and climate change linked?

Water availability is becoming less predictable in many places. In some regions, droughts are exacerbating water scarcity and thereby negatively impacting people’s health and productivity and threatening sustainable development and biodiversity worldwide.

Ensuring that everyone has access to sustainable water and sanitation services is a critical climate change mitigation strategy for the years ahead.

Without better infrastructure and management, millions of people will continue to die every year from water-related diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea, and there will be further losses in biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, undermining prosperity and efforts towards a more sustainable

What can we do?

Civil society organizations should work to keep governments accountable, invest in water research and development, and promote the inclusion of women, youth and indigenous communities in water resources governance.

Generating awareness of these roles and turn- ing them into action will lead to win-win results and increased sustainability and integrity for both human and ecological systems.

Almost three-fourth area of the earth is covered by the water and it constitutes around 60-70 % of the living world. It seems that water is endless renewable source on the earth because it is regenerated and redistributed all over the earth through evaporation and rain. It arises a question in our mind that if water is renewable source then why we should worry for water and try to conserve it.

Actually, there is only 1% of the water on the earth which is usable to us. And other water bodies have unusable water to us such as 97% salty sea water, 2% water in the form of glaciers and polar ice caps. Only 1% water is here for us over which a huge population all over the world is depended for the survival. Death is more possible in the lack of water than the lack of food. It again arises a question in our mind that why we are so late in realizing the need of water saving and conservation.

Since the life of each and every living things on the earth depends on water, then scenario will get worse if useful water become dirty or started reducing. A water looking fresh and drinkable from outside can be mixed with the harmful and toxic elements through various sources like industries, factories, sewer, etc and cause illness and death if ingested by animals, plants or human beings. Here are some tips which really will help us to save water:

• Parents should aware their children about the need of water conservation. They should avoid buying recreational water toys (which require constant stream of water) to their children.
• Everyone should be aware of the water shortage rules and restrictions and strictly follow in their own area.
• Every employee should be active for the water conservation at their own work place and encourage their employer to promote water conservation in other effective ways.
• There should be water conservation awareness and tips for every starter in the orientation manual and training program at schools, colleges, work place, offices, institutions, etc.
• Water conservation techniques should be promoted on every news media such as TV, newspaper, radio, FM, community newsletters, bulletin boards, banners, etc.
• People should be more active in their area to report (to their owner, local authorities, water management of district) any problems related to water loss through broken pipes, errant sprinklers, open hydrants, abandoned free-flowing wells, etc.
• Water conservation awareness should be highly developed and promoted especially in the schools to aware children means future of the nation.
• School students should be assigned to prepare projects on water conservation or given this topic during any competition like debate, discussion, essay writing or speech recitation.

A very good morning to the respected teachers, my dear friends and other gathered people here. As we are here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech on the topic of save water. Now-a-days, lack of useful water in our surrounding areas is the most serious topic which needs to be working out urgently. Three-fourth of the earth surface is covered by the water however there is lack of drinking water on the earth (only 1%).

The level of drinking water on the earth is getting down and dirty because of various industrial sources day by day. It is very serious matter that we are losing the useful water on the earth. Each human body consists of 75% water which make clear that how the water is important for us as a prime elements and responsible for life on the earth. Water circulates itself in the universe through the process of evaporation and rain.

A well developed human body contains an average of 42 liters of water however suffers dehydration at a very small loss of 2.7 liters. He/she starts feeling weak, irritable, fatigue, dizziness, nervousness, headaches, etc. We all should improve the habit of water saving and conservation in our home and outside. Here are some points which can help us in save water outside the doors:

• We should use water according to the need and requirement and never over-water our lawn they need watering every 5 to 7 days (summer season), every 10 to 14 days (winter season) and almost not in the rainy season.
• We should water the lawns especially in the early morning or late evening because due to the low temperature and low wind speed it can not be lost through evaporation and totally used by the plants.
• We should not water the streets, driveways or sidewalks, all are wastage of water.
• We should use water-efficient methods of irrigation (micro and drip irrigation, soaker hoses, etc) while sprinkling over plants or other place.
• If a lawn cut higher, it encourages roots of the plants go deeper and holds more soil moisture thus require less water from outside.
• We should never fertilizes (or only sometimes according to need) our lawns because it increases the need of more water.
• Sprinklers or hoses can not be left unattended as they may loss approximately 600 gallons of water in few hours.
• Car washing should be done on the green ground or lawn otherwise prefer commercial car wash as they recycles water.
• We should avoid ornamental water features like fountains in the lawn as show piece.
• There should be filter system in the individual swimming pools.
• Mulching technique also helps plants to retain soil moisture for long time.
• We should try to plant some native and drought resistant plants, grasses, ground covers and shrubs in the lawns as they do not need more water to survive.
• There should not be any leakage in the water pipes in the home and in case of leakage, hose washers can be used between spigots and water hoses.

Good morning to the excellencies, my respected teachers and my dear colleagues. I would like to speech on the topic of save water today while celebrating such a nice occasion. Hope you all would help me and let me fulfill the objectives of my speech. As we all know the importance of water in our life. Water involves in almost all the processes in our body such as digestion, elimination, assimilation, respiration, maintaining body temperature, etc. It is required to remove the thirst of our body.

We can live for days without food however cannot imagine to live without water more than a day. The level of useful drinking water (only 1%) on the earth is very less and other water is salty and not useful to the living beings. Water is required by everything like plants, animals, microorganisms, human being, etc to fulfill the body requirements. Do we imagine that what will happen if the drinking water get finished a day or get polluted. Yes, it is the main question which has opened the eyes of everyone and start saving water at every place we belong like home, surrounding area, office, school, college, etc.

We have to save and conserve our drinking water from extra spend as well as being polluted by following various techniques of water conservation. Now-a-days, in the world of technological improvement and industrialization, the safe water is getting polluted to a huge level on daily basis by getting mixed with hundreds of tons of toxins and impurities (as industrial wastes). There are many water treatments used to make dirty water clean and bacteriologically safe however many times they have been proved ineffective because of the presence of certain pathogenic bacteria (giardia and cryptosporidium) after test.

Sometimes the presence of toxic chemicals and inorganic minerals are also found causing various diseases. In order to be safe from the diseases, a mass of people has started drinking mineral water. If we regularly destroy and soiled our drinking water, surely there would be a day soon when we get pure water (labeled as oxygen enriched, free toxic materials, radioactive and chemical compounds). Here are some points helping how to better save drinking water:

• We should not waste water by draining it without purpose. All the taps should be closed properly to avoid unnecessary water drainage.
• Do not waste water by irrigating lawns unnecessarily. Lawn needs water every 5 to 7 days in the summer whereas every 10 to 14 days in winter.
• People should verify that home is leak-free while buying home.
• All the dripping taps should be repaired soon through replacing washers as they may loss around 2,700 gallons of water per year.
• Toilet tank leaks should be checked time to time by using food coloring to the tank (if there is leakage it would appear within few min).
• Never flush toilet or use showers for long time unnecessarily because there may be huge water loss.
• People should use only required amount of water bathing or washing clothes.
• Do not destroy water while washing hands, brushing teeth or washing face on the basin, it is good to use mug water or keep close the tap while rubbing hands with soap, cleaning teeth or washing face.
• Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be operated only when fully loaded in order to save water.
• Everyone should store drinking water for long time in the big container instead of using tap run every time.

I would like to say thanks to my class teacher to give such a great opportunity at this day to speech over an important topic. Water conservation is the technique to save clean and pure water for the future use by following various effective measures. Managing fresh water as a sustainable resource requires various strategies and activities in order to protect life by meeting all the water demands.

Reducing the level of fresh drinking water is very serious issue for this huge worldwide population and increasing need of people for water especially in the manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. Water conservation is necessary to fulfills the goal of future generations. It reduces the use of energy because water management require around 15% of the total electricity consumption. It also involve in the habitat conservation for the local wildlife and migrating waterfowl. It reduces need of building other dams or water diversion infrastructures.

In order to conserve fresh drinking water we need to reduce water loss, avoid damaging natural water quality and improve water management practices. There are many water conservation programs run by the government in order to solve the social problems related to water at the local level (municipal water utilities or regional governments). Some common strategies are like public outreach campaigns, reduce outdoor water use, etc.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is estimated that if water metering is done to everyone it will reduce water consumption by 20 to 40 %. Water metering is also necessary to raise awareness among public that metering will surely identify and localize the water leakage anywhere. This is the effective using which water department can easily monitor water usage by every family in the society. There should be less water consumed by the people in various water consuming appliances in the home like toilet flush, showers, sprinklers, fountains, washing machine, dish washers, etc.

There should be water-saving technology in the home appliances like low-flow shower heads (also called energy-efficient shower heads), low-flush toilets, composting toilets, dual flush toilets (uses almost 67% less water than the conventional toilets), faucet aerators, raw water flushing (toilets using sea water or non-purified water), water reuse or recycling of water, rainwater harvesting, clothe washers with high-efficiency, weather-based irrigation controllers, garden hose nozzles, low flow taps everywhere, covered swimming pool to reduce water evaporation, automatic faucet, water less urinals, water less car washing, etc reduces water consumption to a great extent and can save more water if used on daily basis in all houses. Agricultural appliances used by the farmers should also be of water-saving technology to reduce water consumption while irrigating crops.

How To Be A Spokesperson: Speaking on Sustainability

Alex Perez is the summer 2023 Program Intern at Minnesota Clean Water Action, and is writing blogs chronicling his time working in various program areas. This is his second installment in the series - view his intro and first blog here .

Clean Water often collaborates together with our close partners for the mutual benefit of our organizations. On June 29th, I had the pleasure of attending a spokesperson training put on by our friend Levi Teitel at partner group Progress Michigan with a primary goal being to teach the importance of staying on message in communications. Levi shared not only a plethora of information on how to improve spokesperson skills but also takeaways for fellow nonprofit champions throughout the advocacy world. Learning these useful skills can aid in improving our ability to share the Clean Water Action mission, helping us to advance clean water for all.

A main point continually emphasized throughout the session was how effective communication is an essential part to advancing our mission of protecting the precious resource of water for future generations. By basing a message on core values and using your narrative as guidelines for how to convey the message, advocacy ideas have a much better chance of becoming absorbed and implemented. Without straying from this framework, spokespeople are continually able to spur initiative in their target audience and virtually guarantee action is taken.

Expanding this concept to the program level, being able to stay on topic and make your point concisely is something I have witnessed being utilized during my time working in our Minnesota program areas. For example, while I was working with our ReThink Disposable organizer Chloe we traveled around the Twin Cities to sign up businesses for the program that works to stop waste before it starts and I saw this concept in action.

After stopping in at a small restaurant in downtown Minneapolis, we started by talking to the manager of the business. We came to learn they were very close to becoming completely reusable, with the only disposable section of their dine-in being small plastic condiment cups served with their entrees. The manager was suspect about “too-good-to-be-true” as Chloe pitched the idea of giving him the funds, researching, and delivering the product, but he ended up following up and agreeing to sign on. This was thanks in a large part to Chloe’s ability to pitch the ReThink Disposable program concisely, showing what the benefit for him would be.

The restaurant is now fully reusable and helping to reduce the plastic waste footprint in the food industry!

Many owners or managers we talked to shared these same suspicions but ended up showing interest as they learned they could be more sustainable by making the subsidized switch with the assistance of Clean Water Action. Chloe’s pitch helped to inspire these feelings by incorporating what the values behind the program were, how it shaped the message, and what we wanted the business in question to do to incorporate a more sustainable strategy into the dine-in segment of their business.

Below is Chloe’s pitch, using the framework discussed and broken down to demonstrate how her work is embodied in a quick statement to a business.

Hi, my name is Chloe Kintop and I’m the organizer of ReThink Disposable from the non-profit Clean Water Fund. I’m talking and connecting with businesses today about our restaurant assistance program. We’re helping businesses switch from single use foodware to reusable for dining in, things like plates, cups, cutlery…

Chloe leads with what Clean Water Fund’s message is and why we would like for them to switch from single use to reusable foodware for their dine-in business.

...to minimize single use disposable packaging in food service to conserve resources, prevent waste and ocean litter pollution. If we don’t end the “throw-away” lifestyle now, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050

With the middle section of her pitch, Chloe shows what the values of ReThink Disposable are: conserving resources and prevent waste.

There is no fee to join as we provide the funding for the reusables and anything else you would need to support the mission like dishwashing and shelving. We know you are extremely busy, so we do all the work for you – researching the products, purchasing, and delivering them to your door. All we ask of you is to commit to using the reusable foodware provided to you and share with us some information so we can measure the impact on your business in areas such as costs and waste creation.

And with the final section of her pitch, Chloe brings the points together with the narrative: as the organizer of ReThink Disposable, she will provide the support, research, and funding if they agree to implement and share information for data purposes.   

Chloe’s ReThink Disposable pitch demonstrates an effective example and serves to show any person can use simple information to create a spark in those you are sharing with and help inspire motivation for their actions. In Chloe’s case, she had multiple callbacks and follow-up conversations with businesses she talked to which resulted in many signing up to rethink their disposable tableware use in their restaurant. In contrast, if the pitch was to drag on, with unclear points and laborious ideas, the success rate would have most likely been negatively affected. Working from a solid foundation of values is best for advocates when hoping to inspire action.

By being able to effectively convey a message, a spokesperson can instill action in their target audience. In using the same framework of basing your message on core values to shape a narrative, any person is able to influence a larger community in the same way spokespeople do every day. As a collective of members collaborating to support Clean Water Action, it is often our goal to educate our friends, family, and acquaintances about the importance of being an advocate for clean water. By speaking out in daily life and taking action, we can continue to be impactful members of our community. Thanks to Levi and Progress Michigan, I was able to see how important it is to be able to talk to others and educate effectively concerning issues which we all care about.

None of our work is able to occur in a vacuum without the help and collaboration of others, especially in learning how to become better advocates. We all must support each other to advance our collective causes, and the continued support of organizations such as Progress Michigan is greatly appreciated and goes to show how undertakings such as this spokesperson training are so beneficial.

This weekend marks one year since the U.S. Supreme Court decided Sackett v. EPA , the worst judicial rollback of environmental protections ever. That ruling said that the federal Clean Water Act does not ordinarily protect wetlands, even though they are critically important by themselves and for the health of all kinds of other waterbodies. The Court also limited the law's ability to protect many other waters. This post checks in on what many of us in the clean water community, as well as key decision-makers, have done to try and pick up the pieces in the year since Sackett . 

Here's the TL;DR: Because clean water and our freshwater ecosystems are too important to give up on, advocates and leaders have spent the last year fighting nationally and at the state level to safeguard wetlands, streams, and other waters, using whatever tools we can to restore protections and defend these waters from further rollbacks. We've had several wins (and some additional losses), as outlined below. One thing is very clear a year after Sackett : Nothing can replace the Clean Water Act, and we need to reinstate the protections that Congress originally enacted if we're going to fulfill the law’s promise to "restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters."

Before I talk about this past year, however, I want to highlight a study that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service did about wetlands in the continental United States during the period from 2009–19. That report revealed that the rate of wetlands loss in the country accelerated in recent years, and that the nation has lost approximately 670,000 acres of vegetated wetlands, mostly by conversion to much less ecologically valuable ponds. Why does that matter? Because it means our wetlands were seriously threatened even before the Court decided Sackett . And because the law before the ruling was not fully protecting critical resources, we must be extra-vigilant in efforts to limit the harm caused by the Court. 

So, what has happened in the last year?

Last October, leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced a bill to restore the protections the Supreme Court took away. The Clean Water Act of 2023 would amend the Clean Water Act to ensure its pollution control and environmental protections apply to the wetlands and other waters that the Supreme Court painted a target on. This bill is a great start but passing federal legislation—especially in a divided Congress—is not a quick and easy process, especially when (as is the case with clean water) there is a well-organized and deep-pocketed gang of industry opponents.

Several states took steps to improve their clean water programs, ranging from new proposed permitting and environmental review requirements in Colorado and Illinois to increased funding for implementation of clean water requirements and wetlands protections. Colorado’s bill recently passed through the state legislature and is expected to be signed very soon. By contrast, a handful of states have introduced (and a couple have enacted) rollbacks of their wetlands protection laws. For a helpful recap, the Clean Water for All coalition, of which NRDC is a member, recently released a wrap-up of post- Sackett activity in the states .

We’ve also focused on pushing federal administrative agencies to identify existing programs and other policy levers to enhance protections for now-vulnerable waters outside the traditional Clean Water Act regulatory requirements. In March, on World Water Day, the White House and several agencies released a fact sheet that highlighted some of these tools. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also put out a memo committing to enhance how it protects and restores wetlands and freshwater ecosystems through its programs. Last month, the White House announced the America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge to protect, restore, and reconnect eight million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of our nation’s rivers and streams by 2030, which NRDC joined, along with more than 100 states, tribes, cities, businesses, and conservation groups. Also in April, the Bureau of Land Management finalized its Public Lands Rule , which modernized the agency’s strategies for conserving and restoring critical lands and waters on the 245 million acres that it oversees. 

Overall, this year has been heartening because it shows that people across the country are not going to take the Supreme Court’s decision lying down. But our experience also tells us that we have a lot of work to do and that it will be tough sledding. One thing’s for sure: NRDC and our partners are not going away. We’re going to fight until the protections we need for our waterways are in place for communities in every corner of the nation.

Models Bella and Gigi Hadid are collectively donating one million dollars (£785,000) to support relief efforts, according to their agent. 

The money will go to Heal Palestine, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

The sisters have frequently been vocal in their support for Gaza, and their father Mohamed Anwar Hadid is himself Palestinian. 

After Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel, Gigi, 29, offered her condolences to those affected.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict - too many of which are children," she wrote on Instagram.

"I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it's a responsibility I hold daily."

She added: "While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person."

Bella, 27, said in May that she was "devastated at the loss of the Palestinian people and the lack of empathy coming from the government systems worldwide".

The United Nations food agency has said it is unable to feed most civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. 

Only 27,000 people in Rafah are currently being reached by the World Food Programme (WFP), according to its local director Matthew Hollingworth. 

Roughly one million Palestinians are living in the area, many of them displaced from other parts of Gaza. 

"The sounds, the smells, the everyday life are horrific and apocalyptic," Mr Hollingworth told journalists. 

"People sleep to the sounds of bombing, they sleep to the sounds of drones, they sleep to the sounds of war, as now tanks roll into parts of central Rafah, which is only kilometers away. And they wake to the same sounds." 

A ceasefire proposal consisting of three phases has been outlined by Joe Biden.

The French president has backed the ceasefire proposal set out by Joe Biden last night. 

Emmanuel Macron said he supported the proposal for "a durable peace" and that the war "must end". 

France is also working with partners in the region on "peace and security for all", he said. 

A high-level official has said Egypt is undertaking "intensive efforts" to "resume negotiations" for a ceasefire and hostage deal, according to a report. 

The official, quoted by Al-Qahera TV, said this was "in light of the recent American proposition". 

Last night, Joe Biden detailed a ceasefire and hostage deal proposal that he said Israel had put to Hamas. 

However, Israeli officials have told our correspondents they were "blindsided" by the announcement. 

If it works, then this will be a smart and cunning diplomatic move.

If it doesn't then President Joe Biden will look foolish.

He knows the huge risk of once again being taken for a ride by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Few knew that he was due to make this announcement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said 33 of its employees have been killed in Gaza since the war began. 

Of those, it said 19 were killed "while performing their humanitarian duties". 

The organisation today buried Mohammed Jihad Abed, an employee in the disaster risk management department. 

He was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in Rafah last night. 

American, Egyptian and Israeli officials will be meeting tomorrow in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing, according to a report. 

Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera TV. 

Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing last month during its offensive in the city of Rafah. 

Earlier this week, a member of Egypt's security forces was killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah crossing.

An Egyptian soldier stationed on a watchtower had reacted to seeing an armoured vehicle carrying Israeli troops cross a boundary line near the border while the soldiers pursued and killed several Palestinians, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters news agency. 

The soldier opened fire and Israeli forces fired back, killing him, the sources said, sparking an exchange of gunfire between the two sides. 

The British prime minister has praised the proposed ceasefire deal set out by Joe Biden, saying it is "welcome news". 

Rishi Sunak said he hopes Hamas "takes this opportunity to take this deal that is on the table, [and] that would ensure hostages can be released and be back with their families". 

He also expressed hopes to "flood Gaza with far more aid than has been getting in" and to "use that pause in the fighting to build a sustainable and lasting peace". 

Mr Sunak joins a growing group of world leaders expressing support for the deal, which will only put more pressure on Israel and Hamas.
