Your resume's education section should include:
- The name of your school
- The date you graduated ( Month, Year or Year are both appropriate)
- The name of your degree
If you graduated more than 15 years ago, you should consider dropping your graduation date to avoid age discrimination.
Optional subsections for your education section include:
- Academic awards (Dean's List, Latin honors, etc. )
- GPA (if you're a recent graduate and your GPA was 3.5+)
- Extra certifications
- Academic projects (thesis, dissertation, etc. )
Other tips to consider when writing your education section include:
- If you're a recent graduate, you might opt to place your education section above your experience section
- The more work experience you get, the shorter your education section should be
- List your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent and high-ranking degrees first
- If you haven't graduated yet, you can include "Expected graduation date" to the entry for that school

High School Diploma 2009 - 2011
Seaman Resume Relevant Education Example # 2

3. Next, create a seaman skills section on your resume
Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:
- Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
- List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
- Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job
Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.
Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.
Example of skills to include on an seaman resume
A coast guard is a maritime defence organization of a nation. The duties that a coast guard embraces may vary from one nation to the other. They are a strongly armed military establishment with customs and duties. A coast guard's tasks are different from the navy and the transit police. They are generally having the duty to carry search and rescue but without law enforcement authority.
Law enforcement is the task of certain members of the community who work together to uphold the law by identifying, preventing, rehabilitating, or prosecuting others who break society's laws and norms. The phrase refers to the police, the judiciary, and the correctional system.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is a medical procedure that involves chest compression to help a patient breathe. This artificial ventilation helps in keeping the brain function in place and regulates blood throughout the body. CPR is a lifesaving procedure that is used in emergencies.
General maintenance is the regular check-up and repairs of machinery, buildings, and other mechanical equipment. General maintenance is performed by repair workers who are skilled to handle the day-to-day defects produced in the machinery. General maintenance aims to make sure the items remain in the best operational conditions. Usually, a set of planned activities are performed regularly by an expert to monitor the maintenance.
Sailors primarily work at watercrafts such as commercial or private boats, naval, and crew ships.
A telephone system is a technology that enables wired or wireless telecommunication services. It is used for enabling electronic transmission of voice or data between distant parties. Landlines, mobile phones, smartphones, voice calling apps and software, all are examples of modern telephone systems.
Top Skills for a Seaman
- Safety Equipment , 22.8%
- Navigational Aids , 10.0%
- Coast Guard , 9.2%
- Law Enforcement , 9.2%
- Other Skills , 48.8%
4. List your seaman experience
The most important part of any resume for a seaman is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.
Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.
It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of seamen" and "Managed a team of 6 seamen over a 9-month project. "
Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Specific seaman certifications can be a powerful tool to show employers you've developed the appropriate skills.
If you have any of these certifications, make sure to put them on your seaman resume:
- First Aid, CPR and AED Instructor
- First Aid Certification
6. Finally, add an seaman resume summary or objective statement
A resume summary statement consists of 1-3 sentences at the top of your seaman resume that quickly summarizes who you are and what you have to offer. The summary statement should include your job title, years of experience (if it's 3+), and an impressive accomplishment, if you have space for it.
Remember to emphasize skills and experiences that feature in the job description.

Job description
As a quick source of information, the Internet is full of stereotypes about sailors' work; there may be the impression that this is a complex profession, which is extremely difficult, and seafarers have to work around the clock. Is that true? The industry is large; like the ocean, there are many ships. As in any profession, you can achieve various successes, bigger and smaller. Few people know that sailing from port to port is one of the possibilities. Today, there are different types of ships: dry cargo ships, tankers, container ships, and many other different types of ships. Studying at a marine academy or other marine school is a mandatory requirement for a future sailor. There is also a need for a series of specialized pieces of training that allow the operation of separate devices that allow seamen not to go to the boat at all. Like a doctor, a sailor must constantly study and expand his qualifications because this profession is a great responsibility.
Smart job rules
One mistake on board and the ship may crash, and in the depths, there is no chance of survival. This is just a small part of this work. Examples of seamen's work can be multiplied and multiplied. The positions are also very different. You can work in a car, on a bridge, on a board. This is a typical sailor's job. But more often, seafarers work at sea to handle different equipment. They leave the sea in the same way, leaving their families. The ship also has doctors , cooks , and stewards. It is not so easy to compare positions between sailors today.
Each type of ship, even with officers, chiefs, captains, and mechanics, has its position requirements. For example, on one ship, for example, a captain must necessarily be on board. The most important thing here is the concrete experience. Another issue for sailors is their earnings. As a rule, wages are calculated from the number of months spent at sea outside the home.
In some cases, the salary received by sailors is often paid only for a pre-contracted contract and not for the time spent on the ship. In general, this is a rather interesting topic. It requires a lot of financial self-discipline from seafarers. Also, it concerns thinking and investing in your retirement.
Today the sailor will not have to swim on annual cruises. He concludes the appropriate (desired) contract from 3 to 6 months of his stay at sea. There are longer contracts, usually 9 or 10 months at sea. It depends on the company, ship or position, or sea (in the North Sea, there are very short contracts that are concluded with seafarers due to their short duration are difficult to weather conditions). All the necessary skills can be obtained at the Naval Academy during the training; the experience can be obtained directly from the ship during long sea voyages. An important problem is alcohol and drugs.
Control is constantly carried out on ships by the controlling bodies. This is possible by carefully examining their presence in the blood of sailors. On ships, there is no place for alcoholism and irresponsibility. There are work, procedures, and specific requirements that the seafarer must meet. These are world standards. Not everyone can work in this area. These people have a huge amount of knowledge that is inaccessible to the average person.

Then, make sure to mention them in your CV profile and throughout the rest of your application.
- Don’t add an objective: Leave your career objectives or goals out of your profile. You only have limited space to work with, so they’re best suited to your cover letter .
