Qualitative Research Interviewing

Qualitative Research Interviewing Biographic Narrative and Semi-Structured Methods

  • Tom Wengraf - Middlesex University, UK
  • Description

Qualitative Research Interviewing is unique in its conceptual coherence and the level of practical detail that it offers to the beginning social researcher. It provides a comprehensive resource for those concerned with the practice of semi-structured interviewing, the most commonly used interview approach in social research, and in particular for depth, biographic narrative interviewing, the interview methods of choice in qualitative research. It covers the full range of practices from the identification of topics through to strategies for writing up research findings in diverse ways.

The first part describes a coherent conceptual framework for understanding semi-structured and biographic narrative interviewing. It uses examples of good and bad practice from both published research and work by students and field researchers to clarify the following issues:

- The purpose of research

- The development of research questions

- The initial design of interview questions for differently-constructed interview sessions, including follow-up questions

- Generating narrative questions and note-taking

- Choices of random or theory-driven 'samples' of informants

- Managing contact during, and after interviews.

The second part deals with data analysis and writing up. The philosophy and politics of transcribing, coding and interpretation are dealt with in a highly practical way and the complex procedure of biographic-narrative interpretation -distinguishing lived life from told story - is described and illustrated in an accessible way.

The final sections deal with theorising and the writing up of a range of interview reports using a variety of textual strategies. Examples of good and bad practice from student and published research are included throughout.

Qualitative Research Interviewing is a unique and indispensable resource for learning the art and craft of a wide spectrum of methods and approaches in interview based research.

Very well written and easy to navigate and follow. Will highly recommend to professionals and students as an important resource for qualitative research

This book was accessible and really informative for students selecting this approach.

In-depth study of qualitative research interviewing with advice beyond the BNIM method. There is a wealth of guidance offered that stems from real research experience.

A practical and useful text from designing biographic narrative research projects, to interviewing and analysing data. Good examples to support a greater understanding of the method.

This offers very useful material for thinking through the process of doing interviews in qualitative research.

Very Good book for anybody looking to perform Interviews

Our Program has chosen instead to focus our training of students on quantitative methods.

Excellent practical and comprehensive book on in-depth semi structured interviewing.

I believe this text is the strongest on interviews I have read. It is ideal for PhD students as well as masters students. It is very practical and thorough and covers all aspects of the process. Any student considering qualitative research and more specifically questionnaires really need to use this text

Methods of Research into the Unconscious

Kalina Stamenova

The psychoanalytic unconscious is a slippery set of phenomena to pin down. There is not an accepted standard form of research, outside of the clinical practice of psychoanalysis. In this book a number of non-clinical methods for collecting data and analysing it are described. It represents the current situation on the way to an established methodology. The book provides a survey of methods in contemporary use and development. As well as the introductory survey, chapters have been written by researchers who have pioneered recent and effective methods and have extensive experience of those methods. It will serve as a gallery of illustrations from which to make the appropriate choice for a future research project. Methods of Research into the Unconscious: Applying Psychoanalytic Ideas to Social Science will be of great use for those aiming to start projects in the general area of psychoanalytic studies and for those in the human/social sciences who wish to include the unconscious as well as conscious functioning of their subjects. Kalina Stamenova, PhD, FHEA, is a research fellow and a lecturer at the University of Essex. Her research interests involve psychoanalytic research methods, psychoanalysis and education, and psychoanalysis and organisations. R. D. Hinshelwood is a British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who has always had a part-time commitment to the public service (NHS and universities) and to teaching psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. He has written on Kleinian psychoanalysis and on the application of psychoanalysis to social science and political themes. He has taken an interest in and published on the problems of making evidenced comparisons between different schools of psychoanalysis.

From the Rainbow Nation to the Land of the Long White Cloud: Migration, Gender and Biography

Carina Meares

This thesis contributes to and extends two well-established traditions in sociology: firstly, it uses a biographical approach to study the experience of international migration; and secondly, it generates theory from the lived texture of individual lives. Specifically, the research uses the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) to describe, analyse and theorise the gendered experience of migration from ‘the rainbow nation’ of South Africa, to New Zealand, ‘the land of the long white cloud’. The thesis follows and further develops BNIM’s sociobiographic approach, integrating a stronger sociological focus, and emphasising the feminist values of transparency, reflexivity and an attention to power differences between the researcher and her interviewees. In-depth interviews based on a single narrative-seeking question are conducted with South African migrants from several divergent groups, and are then used as the foundation for a process of intensive researcher-led group analysis. From this meticulous analytical process the researcher produces three detailed individual case studies. It is argued that in order to comprehend the significance of broad social phenomena such as migration and gender, it is imperative to have an appreciation of their meaning in the context of individual lives. Noting the occurrence of migration-related disruption across each of the case studies, the thesis uses the concept of biographical disruption to generate an innovative analytic vocabulary and a model that together describe and represent the gendered biographical experience of international migration. The research also uses the analytic language and the model to illustrate the impact of migration on the gender dynamics of migrants’ intimate relationships. It does this by considering one of the pivotal tensions through which gender dynamics are reconstructed in the context of migration, the tension between migrants’ productive and reproductive responsibilities. The language and the model theorise the resolution of this tension in a number of ways, thus extending the terms of the debate about the impact of migration on gender dynamics beyond the current binary conceptualisation of emancipation or subjugation. The utility of the language and the model in their depiction of the overall biographical experience of migration, and the illustration of the effect of migration on gender dynamics is demonstrated in the thesis through their application to each of the individual case studies.

The Interview: An Ethnographic Approach

Maruska Svasek , Markieta Domecka

This chapter critically explores the autobiographical narrative method developed by the German sociologist Fritz Schütze. We shall argue that the methodology can help to uncover domains of psycho-social experience that may be hard to reveal using other interviewing techniques. The method includes a close analysis of interview transcriptions, distinguishing particular textual, performative and affective dimensions of self narration. It can provide valuable insights into the ways in which personal experiences and emotional trajectories, partially shaped by kinship dynamics, socio-economic and political processes, can influence identity development and the formation of life attitudes. As will become clear in this chapter, the method also frequently generates a useful reflective space for interviewees, allowing them to express, communicate and work through painful or confusing past experiences. This is less likely to happen using structured and semi-structured interview techniques, where frequent questions by the interviewer can hamper a process of deep inner reflection.

Dr Karen Jones

This paper explores the lived experience of leadership learning and development in a single case study of an entrepreneur participating in a major leadership development programme for owner–managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Based on autobiographical research, it provides a rich contextual account of the nature and underlying influences of leadership learning throughout the life-course and as a consequence of participation in the programme. Whilst the paper should interest scholars, policy makers and those concerned with programme development, it may also resonate with entrepreneurs and help them make sense of their experience of leadership development.

This paper outlines the epistemological and methodological specificities of the Biographic-Narrative Interpretive Method, developed in Britain (under the name 'BNIM') and Germany (where it is known as 'Interpretative Biografieforschung'). Based on phenomenology and hermeneutics, this method seeks to express subjects' past and present frames of meaning through the use of a non-directive interview. This interview is analysed by a reconstructive process that differentiates between the 'lived life' and the 'told story', and subsequently connects both dimensions. The main steps for the application of the method are explained through the case study of Adriana, taken from a R&D&i research project on immigration and the labour market.

Qualitative Research Interviewing

Qualitative Research Interviewing Biographic Narrative and Semi-Structured Methods

  • Tom Wengraf - Middlesex University, UK
  • Description

Unique in its conceptual coherence and the level of practical detail, this book provides a comprehensive resource for those concerned with the practice of semi-structured interviewing, the most commonly used interview approach in social research, and in particular for in-depth, biographic narrative interviewing. It covers the full range of practices from the identification of topics through to strategies for writing up research findings in diverse ways.   PART ONE: CONCEPTS AND APPROACHES TO DEPTH INTERVIEWING   Interview `Facts' as Evidence to Support Inferences to Eventual Theorization/Representation Models   Conceptual Frameworks for Studying and Inferring from (Research) Interview Interaction Practice   Models of Research Design and Their Application to Semi-Structured Depth Interviewing   Lightly and Heavily-Structured Depth Interviewing Theory-Questions and Interviewer-Questions

`Wengraf provides a comprehensive theoretical and practical guide to the planning, conduct, and interpretative analysis of data by semi-structured interviewing methods. Forthright and frank in his comments about the limitations and practical implications of varying choices which investigators have to make in designing their research projects. Reading this text is like having a tough but expert and caring mentor who wants you to do the best research possible, but will not hesitate to tell you when your ideology and assumptions skew that possibility' - Vincent W Hevern, Le Moyne College, USA

Doing Interviews

SAGE Research Methods is a research methods tool created to help researchers, faculty and students with their research projects. SAGE Research Methods links over 175,000 pages of SAGE’s renowned book, journal and reference content with truly advanced search and discovery tools. Researchers can explore methods concepts to help them design research projects, understand particular methods or identify a new method, conduct their research, and write up their findings. Since SAGE Research Methods focuses on methodology rather than disciplines, it can be used across the social sciences, health sciences, and more.

With SAGE Research Methods, researchers can explore their chosen method across the depth and breadth of content, expanding or refining their search as needed; read online, print, or email full-text content; utilize suggested related methods and links to related authors from SAGE Research Methods' robust library and unique features; and even share their own collections of content through Methods Lists. SAGE Research Methods contains content from over 720 books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks, the entire “Little Green Book,” and "Little Blue Book” series, two Major Works collating a selection of journal articles, and specially commissioned videos.

This paper presents thoughts on the use of online semi-structured interviews in a participatory format. On one hand, in the process of interviewing and on the other by using complementary methods such as media diaries and its associated online ethnography techniques. One of the challenges of audience research is the capture of the “audiencing” [ 1 ] process, in this paper we rely on two research projects to better discuss and consider forms of doing it, in arid research contexts, such as online and with a (inter)generational dimension.

Q-methodology is a quantitative/qualitative social science method [ 27 ] considered well-suited for media reception and use [ 26 ]. It allows us to analyze individuals’ subjective perceptions of an area of experience and aggregate these perceptions through a factor analysis. As a result, the Q-methodology provides both qualitative and quantitative findings, creating a typological pattern of differences and similarities between the participants’ perceptions [ 27 ]. Q-methodology is applied in a card-sorting activity with a think-out-loud protocol structured based on the research questions. Participants have to place and rank these cards in a pyramid according to their daily use or importance in their lives. On each card is a statement or the particular sociocultural phenomenon being investigated [ 27 ], usually defined in a previous stage of the research. This activity has a dialogical potential and allows participants to reflect on their choices during the process. “When informants have completed the card placing process, accompanied by dialogical negotiation, they have self-analyzed their subjective news consumption universe, whose internal architecture is moreover relational” argues Schrøder [ 27 ].
