Why the Verto Prague abroad experience?

The Prague abroad experience is a great fit for young adults who are excited by…

City Life with Nature All Around

Prague is a city where medieval meets modern, and city meets nature. If you enjoy exploring city streets and never being bored thanks to the endless museums, art, theater, music, nightlife, and food that a city has to offer– but also need your “green and peace”– Prague is a perfect city for you. Full of large green parks and beautiful lakes, with the Vtlava River running through its middle, and hiking opportunities even within the city limits at Petrin Hill, there’s tons of nature to explore!

Cafe Culture and Great Eats

Are you a coffee lover?! There’s no shortage of cafes in Prague ! As part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Prague was influenced by the coffee-crazy city of Vienna and has a long cafe culture tradition. Historically cafes were not just places to have coffee and cake – they were the headquarters of culture and society, where actors, poets, writers, politicians, and more gathered together. The gorgeous interiors of Prague’s traditional coffee houses are sure to inspire your next novel!

The city also has food for everyone, ranging from traditional to modern Czech dishes, international cuisines, and even vegan and vegetarian options.

Have a sweet tooth?! So do the Czech! Prague is full of traditional Czech pastries and deserts and you’ll be able to find cute bakeries and patisseries all over the city.

Residence/Apartment Housing

With almost 40 universities, Prague is a major student city and if you put yourself out there, you can befriend local and international students, both in your housing complex or out and about!

You’ll live in either a residence or shared apartment-style housing, rooming with other Vertoans. There may be other university students living in the building. You can expect to share a bedroom with other Vertoans. You’ll also get to flex (or acquire) your culinary skills as you’ll be responsible for your own meals. Don’t worry – basic kitchen tools are provided! Great for participants who have eating preferences that can be difficult to accommodate in larger group settings.

Art & Architecture

Walking around Prague is like jumping into an Architecture textbook. Prague has an eclectic mix of old and new architectural styles and is famous for well-preserved castles, Baroque and Gothic cathedrals, cobblestone streets, medieval squares, dreamy bridges, and a lively arts scene.

You’ll pass UNESCO World Heritage sites on your walk to class, and enjoy excursions to incredible palaces!

History & Culture

Do the names Einstein or Mozart ring a bell?! World-famous artists, writers, historians, and academics have lived in Prague, so there’s no shortage of history and culture to explore!

The medieval heart of Europe can be felt in Prague’s cobblestone streets, where as early as the Middle Ages, it became one of the leading cultural centres of Christian Europe. That tradition lives on today as Prague is full of lively arts and academics scenes and rich historical sites.

Prague stands out from other European cities because it experienced relatively less damage during both World Wars. As such, it has even more well-preserved architecture and relics than other places in Europe!

A More Affordable City in Europe

Prague is a great choice for young adults who want to experience the glamour of Europe on a tighter budget. The public transportation system is excellent, so you can always catch an affordable ride, and prices at grocery stores, shops, and local restaurants often beat those of major cities in the U.S.!

Safety & COVID-19

The health and safety of our participants is always our top priority. We’ve developed stages of planning to address the specific concern of COVID-19.

Best 10 International Schools in Prague

International education in prague.

⇩ Scroll directly to the list of top 10 best schools in Prague ⇩

Situated right in the centre of Europe, with one of the continent’s highest economic growth rates and affordable costs of living, Czech Republic appeals to many expats. Travel to its bordering countries is easy and efficient, it has a temperate climate with warm summers and snowy winters, and the capital, Prague, is brimming with culture, history, beauty and much more.

While the education system in Czech Republic is excellent and free, the language of tuition is of course Czech. English and German are usually taught as second languages in public schools. Fortunately, Prague is home to the majority of the country’s international schools , making the capital city a very worthy option for expat families with school-age children.

Outside of Prague you’ll find a selection of international schools in Czech Republic’s other big cities, like Brno and Ostrava. But for the biggest choice of schools with the most school places available for your child, the capital city reigns supreme.

International schools in Prague fall into a few broad categories. The most popular type is the traditional international school you’ll find all over the world. Classes are taught through English, the curriculum is usually the International Baccalaureate (although the British curriculum is also very common), and the student body is made up of mostly expat children from a multitude of countries.

Prague also has a selection of international schools who focus more on the language of the school’s affiliated country, like French or German (or even Czech). Classes are taught through this language and the school curriculum and culture usually matches what you would find in the affiliated country too.

Although not as widespread as in other parts of the world, Prague has a small number of international schools that follow the American or Canadian curriculum. There are also some boarding schools, but these are located outside of the city.

You won’t find international schools in Prague’s Stare Mesto (Old Town). Instead they’re located in the capital’s residential and business areas, east of the old town and across the river in various districts across the city.

For international schools within reach of all Prague has to offer, check out districts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Almost any region in the north, centre or south east of the city will have an international school somewhere.

As far as school fees are concerned, Prague’s international schools inch towards the lower end of the European scale. You can expect to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $20,00 per year, but the exact figure can and will vary greatly depending on which school you choose, the age of your child(ren), and many other factors. Even so, international schools in Prague still offer competitive costs compared to elsewhere on the continent .

Below, we have compiled the top 10 international schools in Prague according to our users. However, there are another 11 schools to choose from in the city. You can find the best international school for your child by personalising your results . Just fill in your search criteria, and we will calculate a personal score for every international school in Prague based on your requirements .

Education and schools in Prague

prague education centre

Education in the Czech Republic is excellent, and this is reflected by the standard of education and schools in Prague. Even better news for expat parents is that their children can attend public school at no cost, provided they are EU nationals or legal residents.

This is the case from pre-primary school up to and including university. But, seeing as the language of instruction in public schools is Czech, most expat parents choose to enrol their children in private or international schools instead.

Public schools in Prague

Classes in public schools are taught entirely in Czech, with either English or German taught as a second language. Some expat parents are discouraged by this, but there are advantages to expat children being taught in Czech, the biggest of which is that it's a good way for them to learn the language and subsequently assimilate into the culture and make local friends.

Some schools take difficulties with the language into account when assessing students in subjects such as the Czech language and literature. There are also a few public schools in Prague that have programmes for bilingual or foreign language students, which assist them when first starting out in school.

It is always a good idea for parents to visit schools of interest before enrolling their children. This can be done on official open days or may be arranged by request. Conditions in public schools may vary widely, and some are more amenable to and equipped for having international students than others.

Read more about Education and Schools in the Czech Republic .

Private schools in Prague

Private schools in Prague are partly funded by the state and partly by tuition, and they teach the Czech Republic's national curriculum. Some of these schools are bilingual, teaching in both Czech and English or sometimes Czech and German. Expat parents who can't quite fit international school fees into their budget but are still concerned about their children having difficulties with the Czech language may find these schools to be an ideal solution.

International schools in Prague

Equation written on chalkboard by JE Shoots from Unsplash.

Most international schools teach in English and are perhaps most useful for expats planning to reside in the city for a relatively short period of time, as the continuity in curriculum minimises disruption in the child's education. Common curricula offered by international schools include the International Baccalaureate (IB), the American Curriculum and the British National Curriculum. Prague, in particular, has a high concentration of international schools.

International schools can be expensive, so if moving to Prague as part of an international relocation package, it is worth negotiating for school fees to be included as part of the relocation contract.

International schools can vary widely in ethos, curriculum, quality and size. Although there are a number of schools to choose from, space may be limited, and parents are advised to start the application process as soon as possible.

Special-needs education in Prague

The Czech government implemented a system of inclusion for children with special needs. This means that all children can be educated in mainstream schools, no matter the level of their learning difficulties. This is the case unless a parent specifically wants their child to be educated at a special-needs school. In some mainstream schools, there are also classes for special needs children if they would like to be taught separately.

All schools have the necessary facilities, staff and support provisions available to assist children with disabilities, and a counselling system has been developed to help with the integration process into mainstream schools. The different needs of all children have also been regarded, and individualised forms of education have been designed to meet these needs.

Tutors in Prague

Tutors are extremely helpful in assisting expat children to adjust to their new school and curriculum, as well as the language of instruction, if different from home. Both Czech and English tutors are widely available, as well as those for other subjects, such as maths, and can provide school support where needed.

There are websites and tutor companies that advertise at-home or online private tutoring services, which include companies such as Apprentus and Tutoroo. There are also many language schools in Prague that assist expats and expat children to learn Czech.

What do expats say about schools in Prague?  " At the moment our son is homeschooling, and we are also sending him to the forest schools in summer, which are definitely better than standard classroom schools. It’s definitely better to choose schools with mixed classrooms of foreign kids and Czechs so your child can blend in easier."  Read about Juris and his experiences of expat life , moving from Latvia to Czech Republic.

Education Center of Prague City Gallery Contact and booking T (+420) 606 612 987 E [email protected]

is according to the valid price list of exhibitions and educational programs

The GHMP Education Center on the ground floor of the Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace is open for children, all types of schools (preschool, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, after-school art courses), families, adults, senior citizens, visitors with special needs, and other groups or individuals. The studio’s main focus is on educational activities through which the gallery introduces visitors to its exhibitions, collections, and buildings. Its goal is to be an open and welcoming venue for interacting and actively communicating with art. The center’s creative workshops for schools, families, children, adults, and senior citizens explore the subjects of the gallery’s current exhibitions as well as a diverse range of other topics such as animated film, graphic design, costumes and masks, lighting design, new media, and street art. The studio’s facilities allow participants to experiment with a variety of techniques from various fields of fine art (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, three-dimensional art, intermedia art, action art, conceptual art, and more). In this way, our facilities are like a creative art laboratory. The workshops and courses are led by qualified internal and external instructors and educators with a wide variety of specializations. We also work directly with the artists represented in our exhibitions and collections. The education program makes use of various interdisciplinary approaches (involving, for instance, photography, film, theater, new media, literature, writing and text, and ecology and the environment). We also work together with experts from Czech and foreign institutions. The Education Center also acts as a venue for specialized events (organized, for instance, in cooperation with the Chamber of Education Workers of the Czech Council of Galleries, the Association of Art Teachers, and the Czech National Institute of Pedagogy) and offers internships and professional training for students from secondary schools and universities (specifically, students from various faculties of education, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design). The education center is roughly 180 m² in size and consists of a main studio (interactive zone) and a reading room with specialized literature (a relaxation “chill-out” zone), plus a photography studio with a darkroom and a reference library featuring publications about Czech and foreign photography, film, theater, and new media. Other facilities include a painting studio and a printmaking workshop with a printing press. The education center, designed by artist Tomáš Svoboda, is barrier-free.   Photogallery from educational programs   Leaflet to download in Czech in English in Ukrainian in Vietnamese in Spanish in Russian

I can highly recommend PCU. I specialised in pedagogy and English as a foreign language in combined study. I passed my state exams and was completely prepared for teaching. After obtaining my Bachelor’s degree I pursued my Master’s at UJEP. While studying I started teaching at a grammar school in my home town where I still teach. The School of Education uses new, modern and truly motivating methods. The semesters of didactics were very time consuming, but I used all the materials in class and these methods were extremely useful to me in my follow-up studies at UJEP. I can say with a clear conscience that the School of Education has advanced my teaching skills the most during my career. It was a challenging programme, but incredibly practical and I still remember the content that I studied.

I spent time in the UK and USA as an au-pair and when I returned to the Czech Republic I began teaching English at a private language school which I didn’t feel properly qualified for. I chose to study English as a foreign language at PCU which hugely advanced my skills and professional career. I was really "forced" to work on my knowledge of English, and on the other subjects connected to language teaching. It wasn’t easy but it definitely improved my abilities not only with speaking and writing but especially in language teaching, which was something that I’ve always dreamed of. Classes take place in a real language school under the guidance of experts and are run in smaller groups which allowed for "closer" contact between the lecturers and students. Now I work as an English teacher at local primary school.

Civic Education Centre

COV-new_2014-color-poz-en_web.png

The Civic Education Centre's mission is to strengthen democracy. Since the Centre's founding, we have been addressing the issue of long term development of civic education in the Czech Republic. We've been doing this at all levels: from working with our target groups on the ground, research and methodological work, to the interconnecting of key actors and conceptual work at the systemic level.

Through our work we contribute towards the target group's development of key competencies which allow them to effectively participate in a democratic society. Besides the development of knowledge (such as in the areas of the state and its legal system) and skills (such as critical thinking, cooperation and dialogue), we put emphasis on the development of key attitudes and values as anchored in the Constitution.

Civic Education Centre (COV) was established in 2009 under the auspices of Masaryk University in Brno. In 2014 the Centre moved to Charles University in Prague. In 2020, its core members launched synergistic activities as part of a newly established NGO. Since then, activities aimed at the development of democratic culture in schools have been implemented under its auspices.

Civic Education Centre is a non-partisan institution founded to help build long-term concepts and strategies for civic education in the Czech Republic.

Since the Velvet revolution in 1989, civic education has not been considered important and barely existed, largely a consequence of the ruling party’s antidemocratic policies during the Cold War. One legacy of that regime is a deep-rooted scepticism of the public against education in political issues. However, a functioning democracy needs its citizens to be educated in the mechanics of democratic process and the workings of democratic institutions.

A host of non-profit organisations and remarkable projects are already actively promoting civic education in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, many of them only address specific issues and have little prospects for long-term sustainability. It is the Centre’s task to assume a coordinating role and actively support the introduction of a comprehensive civic education concept in the Czech Republic. To achieve this, the Centre closely cooperates with already involved actors – NGOs, government institutions, universities. The Centre publishes analyses and reports on civic education and sets benchmarks and standards for evaluation. Where needed, the Centre realises its own projects.

The Centre is building a network of partners in the Czech Republic, mostly NGOs and think-tanks, and is open to cooperation with international partners. International collaboration should provide a platform for a fruitful exchange of experiences as well as adoption of interesting projects from abroad.

In the long-term plan we focuse on conceptual development of civic education on three levels of project cycle:

  • At the level of IDENTIFICATION we are providing analysis of the educational needs in long-life development of the civic skills.
  • At the level of IMPLEMENTATION  we are providing training courses, seminars, conferences etc. All formal, non-formal and informal types of civic education. Courses offered through our own services or through certified partner organizations.
  • At the level of EVALUATION  we are offering a complete evaluation of educational programs for schools, educational institutions and public authority.

What we are offering

  • We provide methodological materials for teaching civic issues in schools.
  • We translate methodological guides of the Council of Europe concerning civic education.
  • We organize courses and conferences for schools and the public on issues of civic education.
  • We provide specialized analysis and research on issues of citizenship, civic education and social literacy.
  • We focuse on advocacy of conceptual support for the development of civic education on the political level.
  • We provide methodological support for schools and educational institutions in the development of civic skills.

Cross-cutting issues which we focus:

  • Decentralization of civic education activities.
  • Support to community-based initiatives and non-governmental organizations.
  • Increasing radicalization and extremism in society.
  • Civic education at formal education.
  • Fighting with corruption.
  • Searching positive role models in society.

Current projects running in 2014:

  • Evening with Ombudsman - Empowering rural communities through knowledge on fundamental rights.
  • EDC/HRE training programme for teachers and local education authorities
  • Citizen in Europe: future and challenges
  • Beyond voting - Participatory methods of public engagement
  • Public libraries: traditional sites of civic education

Research and analysis

In an analysis of civic education for adults, Civic education centre defined civic education in the context of Czech Republic and identified programs aimed at adult population. The analysis revealed that programs aimed directly at developing civic competences among adults are virtually absent. Most programs fall into the category of the vocational or leisure education. But a democratic society needs a long term strategy of civic education at all levels, and the Czech Republic is no exception. The study proposes a list of policies to support and develop civil society, including adequate and sustained financial support for civic education programs.

Researchers at the Civic Education Centre are conducting a similar analysis of civic education in primary and secondary schools. The study will define key concepts, identify current activities and programs, introduce key actors, and propose a strategy for future development of this area. Apart from that, the study will provide a strong theoretical insight into forming and realizing civic competences. Among the primary sources are experiences and learning outcomes of a two-year project in teacher training.

A daption of foreign publications

The Centre has partnered with the Centre for Democratic Education (CEDU) to produce publications inspired by the International Framework for Education in Democracy Res Publica, published by Center for Civic Education in CA, USA. The Centre is also translating and adapting core materials on civic education, including the Education for Democratic Citizenship and Living Democracy packs published by the Council of Europe. The translations are supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Embassy of the United States, Czech Republic.

Educating Future Citizens

The Centre is developing a comprehensive training program in civic education for teachers of primary schools, high schools and vocational schools. A cohort of 78 teachers from 39 schools from all regions of the Czech Republic, will graduate from the program and apply their new knowledge in their classes and further cooperate with the Centre in transferring lessons learned. The teachers will also share their experiences using a unique web-based information exchange platform.

The creation of this program is a collaborative endeavour involving the entire civic education network, which comprises of 12 coordinators covering all regions of the Czech Republic and 5 core staff of the Centre. The creation of this network and the project itself were made possible through funding from the European Union Social Fund, Operational Programme ‘Education for Competitiveness’.
