A paper is bad enough, but presentations are even more nerve-wracking. You've got the writing down, but how do you turn it into a dynamic, informative, enjoyable presentation? Why, here's how!

Guidelines and Audience

Step 1 Know the requirements.

  • Know how long the speech must be.
  • Know how many points you're required to cover.
  • Know if you must include sources or visuals.

Step 2 Know your audience.

  • If you're presenting to people you know, it'll be easy to know what to break down and what to gloss over. But if you're presenting to unknown stockholders or faculty, for instance, you need to know about them and their knowledge levels, too. You may have to break your paper down into its most basic concepts. Find out what you can about their backgrounds.

Step 3 Know your resources.

  • Does the facility have a computer and projector screen?
  • Is there a working WiFi connection?
  • Is there a microphone? A podium?
  • Is there someone who can assist you in working the equipment before your presentation?

Script and Visuals

Step 1 Create a script for your presentation.

  • Only have one point per notecard -- that way you won't end up searching the notecard for your information. And don't forget to number the cards in case you get mixed up! And the points on your cards shouldn't match your paper; instead of regurgitating information, discuss why the key points of your paper are important or the different points of view on this topic within the field.

Step 2 Decide on a limited number of ideas you want your audience to comprehend and remember.

  • As you go through this outline, remove any jargon if it may not be understood.

Step 3 Design visual aids to make your presentation even better.

  • If you won't have access to the proper technology, print visual aids on poster board or foam-core board.
  • If using presentation software, use words sparingly, but enough to get your point across. Think in phrases (and pictures!), not sentences. Acronyms and abbreviations are okay on the screen, but when you talk, address them fully. And remember to use large fonts -- not everyone's vision is fantastic. [7] X Research source

Step 4 Think in terms of conversation.

  • It's okay to be a bit repetitive. Emphasizing important ideas will enhance comprehension and recall. When you've gone full circle, cycle back to a previous point to lead your audience to the right conclusion.
  • Minimize the unnecessary details (the procedure you had to go through, etc.) when highlighting the main ideas you want to relay. You don't want to overload your audience with fluff, forcing them to miss the important stuff.
  • Show enthusiasm! A very boring topic can be made interesting if there is passion behind it.

Practice, Practice, and More Practice

Step 1 Practice your presentation in front of friends and family members.

  • If you can grab a friend who you think has a similar knowledge level to your audience, all the better. They'll help you see what points are foggier to minds with less expertise on the topic.

Step 2 Tape record yourself.

  • It'll also help you with volume. Some people get rather timid when in the spotlight. You may not be aware that you're not loud enough!

Step 3 Be warm.

  • Do the same with your conclusion. Thank everyone for their time and open the floor for any questions, if allowed.
  • Make eye contact with people in the audience to help build your connection with them.

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

So, you’re about to present your first academic paper? You are preparing to defend your thesis? You are about to present your research to a bunch of experts?

But, you don’t know where to start? or, how to start?

That’s ok, you are in the right place.

In this short post, I’m going to show you how to do a good academic research presentation so that your audience actually understands and appreciates it.

The main goal of an academic research presentation — like any other type of presentation — is to carry your audience through a story and grab their attention during the whole story. But no matter how good a story is, if it’s not told properly it’ll lose its audience at the very first words.

And every good story needs a good structure, otherwise, your audience will get lost in a dead-end.

To avoid getting into that dead-end and losing your audience, you should structure your presentation around 5 main questions:

  • Who are you and what’s your story about?
  • Why should your audience — or anyone — care about your story, and why is it relevant to tell that story now?
  • How did you get to write your story? Who are the main characters?
  • What happens in the story? What happens to the characters?
  • So, What? Why this ending is better? Why should I wait for a new episode?

The order in which these questions are answered throughout your presentation can vary. Good stories might also start at the end and crawl back to its beginnings. Play with the order and see what suits best your story, only you know better what works for your research.

So let’s go now through each of the questions, shall we?

Who are you and what’s your research about?

Introduce yourself — unless you have already been introduced. Sometimes we are so impatience to give our presentation that we forget the basics.

Many times when we choose a book to read we ask ourselves about the human that wrote the book. And, as any writer researchers should include a short biography of themselves in the presentation.

And this is not to brag about yourself or your experience, but to give a human touch to the research itself. Before anyone wants to hear your story — your research — you need to tell them why they should be listening to you.

A short introduction of 30 seconds will do, your name, your background, why you are here in this room presenting and anything else that might be relevant to the research you are doing.

Give a context to your story, a kind of foreword to your research. State your thesis clearly and tell your audience why the topic you are going to address is relevant. And why they should care.

Give a hook. Start with a kind of provocation to instill curiosity and need. Try to think out of the box and talk about something your audience will found interesting. Use analogies too much known or simpler things that everyone in the room would be able to understand. Don’t talk to the experts, they already know it.

To give you an example, this is how I started one of my papers on overconfidence and innovation:

If you had to choose between The Joker and Batman, who would you want to be?

My paper was nothing to do with superheroes — at least not in a common way — but I wanted to talk about the dual personality innovators have, thus The Joker vs Batman analogy.

Once you have given your hook and presented yourself, give your audience an idea of what you are going to talk about and what awaits them during the following minutes.

Give them a roadmap of the talk, even if it seems redundant to you. This doesn’t mean you have to list your table of contents, just a prelude of your story.

In total, one minute and one slide are enough.

Why should your audience care about your Research, and why is it relevant now?

The next 2 or 3 slides should introduce the subject to the audience. Very briefly. Usually, research presentations last between 10 to 15 minutes, but many are shifting to the startup pitch format of 3 to 5 minutes. So being concise and direct to point is quite important.

Telling your audience why the topic you are researching about is important and relevant it’s essential, but should not take all time. This is just the introduction, you need to save time for the main story.

There are mainly 6 elements that make a good introduction:

  • Define the Problem:  Many speakers forget this simple point. No matter how difficult and technical the problem you are addressing is there is certainly a way to explain it concisely and clearly in less than one minute. Explain your problem as if your audience were 5 years old children, not because they are not smart or respectable, but because the simpler you get to explain a complex problem the more it shows your mastery and preparation. If the audience doesn’t understand the problem being attacked, then they won’t understand the rest of your talk, and you’ll lose them before you get to your great solution. For your slides, condense the problem into a very few carefully chosen words.  An example here again from my research: Is being extremely confident in ourselves good or bad for innovation?
  • Motivate the Audience:  Explain why the problem is so important. How does the problem fit into the larger picture(e.g. entrepreneurship ecosystem, neuroscience,…)? What are its applications? What makes the problem nontrivial? If no one has done this research, why is it relevant now to do it? What are the circumstances that make it relevant now more than ever? Avoid broad statements such as  “Innovation is what drives economic growth, but there are few innovative individuals, so how can we encourage people to become innovators?”  Rather, focus on what really matters: “ universities are investing millions to develop entrepreneurship education program, still students graduating from these programs aren’t starting any venture.”
  • Introduce Terminology:  scientific jargon is boring and complex, it should be kept to a minimum. However, sometimes is almost impossible not to refer to specific scientific terms. Any complex jargon should be introduced at the beginning of the presentation or when each term is introduced for the first time during the presentation. To avoid losing time tot his, you can prepare a short document with all the terms and definitions to hand out to the participants in the audience.
  • Discuss Earlier Work: Do your research, you are not reinventing the wheel.  There is nothing more frustrating than listening to a talk that covers something that has already been published without making reference tot hose studies. It not only shows that you didn’t do your research and that you are underprepared, but it shows you don’t know how to conduct research. This doesn’t mean that you should have read and cited ALL the works and papers that talk about the topic of your research. This is only useful if you are doing a systematic review. But you have to be sure that you know, read and cite those that really matter. You have to explain why this work is different from past wor, or how you are improving or continuing the research.
  • Emphasize the Contributions of the Paper:  Make sure that you explicitly and succinctly state the contributions made by your paper. That is the so what?. Give just a quick glimpse of your contributions and implications for the research and the practice. The audience wants to know this. Often it is the only thing that they carry away from the talk.
  • Consider putting your Conclusion in the Introduction : Be bold. Let everyone know from the start where you are headed so that the audience can focus on what matters.

How did you get to your results? How did you conduct your study?

There should be 1 or 2 methods slides that allow the audience to understand how the research was conducted. You might include a flow chart describing the main ingredients of the methods used. Do not put too many details, just what it’s needed to understand the study. Many of the details are appropriate for the manuscript but not for the presentation. If the audience wants to have more details on the methods they can always read your full paper, or you can prepare backup slides with this information to share during the Q&As session. For example, you could just say:  “During 4 weeks we conducted semi-structured interviews with top managers and employees from different organizations. Our final sample was composed of 30 individuals, from which 10 were top managers and 15 were female and aged between 25 and 60 years.”  Further details are presented in backup slides or in the manuscript.

What did you find, what happened?

The next 3 slides should show the main results obtained with your research. If appropriate, it is nice to start with a slide showing the basic phenomena being studied (e.G. the process of innovation and how). It reminds your audience about the variables used and manipulated and the role they have in the situation being studied.

Next, show figures, pictures, or graphs that clearly illustrate the main results. Do not show charts and tables of raw data. No one is able to read an excel table on a presentation, if only it gives the creeps. So instead of putting large and ugly tables, no one is going to read, use beautiful and meaningful graphs and figures.

You can use free infographic apps to build awesome visual representations of your data. Apps like  Canva ,  Venngage , or  Piktochart  work great.

All figures should be clearly labeled. When showing figures, be sure to explain the figure axes before you talk about the data (e.g., “the X-axis shows time. The Y-axis shows economic profit).

When presenting the data try to be as simple as possible, this is the most complex part of your research. You might be an expert, but your audience probably is not and they need to understand your results if you want to convenience them with your research.

So, What? What are the outcomes, implications and future steps?

The last 2 slides are probably the most important section of your presentation. It’s the denouement of your story, and it should be good.

Nothing is more frustrating than reading or listening to a good story to arrive to a disappointing end. All the effort you did to tell the good story is lost if you don’t curate appropriately the ending.

Some people be distracted during the whole presentation and would only pay attention to your conclusions, so those conclusions better are good.

Before getting to your end, sum up what your study was about, your research questions and objectives, and then go to the conclusion. In this way, the lousy distracted audience will also get most of your research.

List the conclusions in clear, easy to understand language. You can read them to the audience. Also give one or two sentences about what this likely means — your interpretation — for the big picture, go back to the context and motives of your research. Explain how your results improve our understanding and contribute to theory and practice.

Don’t be afraid to talk about the flaws and limitations of your study. Not only this shows you are humble but that you are prepared enough and that you are aware that things can be improved. Remember that having contradictory results to what you expected is not a bad thing, they are still results, you need to find an explanation to this.

Once you know your limitations, tell your audience how can this be improved in future research. How can other scholars address the problems and flaws, what are the next steps, and what future research should focus on?

Your job as a presenter is to not only present the paper but also lead a discussion with your audience about your research. Talk about its strengths, weaknesses, and broader implications. To help focus the class discussion, end your presentation with a list of approximately three major questions/issues worthy of further discussion.

Please finalize your presentation with at least two or three major things that should be discussed. Discussion with the audience should be especially encouraged at this point, but you should be prepared to foster this by raising these issues.

So, when preparing your presentation think like one of the people in your audience. Think about what they would ask? What would they like to discuss further? What are the points that might trigger confusion or disagreement?

If you have these questions in mind you can prepare to give appropriate answers and be less stressed out by the uncertainty of your audience reaction. You can then prepare a couple of backup slides that will help you give responses to the questions being asked and that will help you make your point.

Final thoughts

Reading and understanding academic research papers can be a tough assignment, especially because it can be very specific and you might not know or understand many terms, methodologies, or even statistical models and analysis. So preparing a presentation of an academic paper, whether is yours or others’ work, takes time and must be taken seriously.

When you are preparing your draft for the presentation, keep in mind that your audience will rely on listening comprehension, not reading comprehension. That means that your ideas need to be clear and to the point, and organized in a way that makes it possible for your audience to follow you.

And since understanding was difficult for you who had the time to read and discuss the paper with your team, you can imagine how difficult it might be for an audience that hasn’t read the paper and moreover has no expertise (or not much) on the research topic you are presenting.

So you have to be very careful about how you present your article so that your audience understands what you are saying, feel involved and curious, and off course don’t sleep while you talk.

Scientific oral presentations are not simply readings of scientific manuscripts, so being in front of an audience reading scientific terms and statistical models and equations is out of the picture. You need to provoke curiosity and engagement so that at the end of your presentation people want to know more about your research.

Don’t forget that time is precious, and not everyone is ready to give their time to listen to things they don’t find amusing or intriguing. Being concise and simple is not an easy exercise, but is crucial for passing by a message.

Follow simple presentation rules:

  • 1 slide takes 1 minute to present, so if you have 10 minutes to present don’t do more than 10 slides.
  • Don’t use small size fonts, the minimum readable size is 20pt.
  • Don’t use text when you don’t need it, the text should be only be used to highlight things that you want your audience to remember
  • Use pictures whenever you can but don’t overuse them. Pictures have to be relevant to your speech.
  • Be careful with grammar and errors. Read your slides thoroughly a couple of times before submitting them for a presentation. And ask someone else to read them also, they are more likely to find mistakes than you are as they are less biased and less attached to your topic.
  • Finally, prepare, prepare, and prepare. Mastery is only possible through training. No matter how good you are at improvising, preparing for a presentation is key for succeeding at it.

Whether you're presenting a technical paper you wrote in an educational environment or one about how to improve efficiency in the workplace to your upper management, preparing the presentation includes the same basic steps. You've already written the paper, which means you've completed the research on the material you're presenting; you're the expert. That doesn't mean you can breeze through the presentation without any preparation, but it should help calm your nerves.

Know Your Audience

You might be presenting to people you know in your office, or you could be presenting to unknown stockholders or faculty. Either way, you should know more about their background and their potential knowledge of the subject of your paper. If you wrote about a new marketing plan, you don't have to break it down to its most basic concepts if your manager has a marketing degree, for example.

Basic Paper Presentation Preparation

It is vital to be able to identify the most important points in your paper. Although the goal is to have the audience members read the paper themselves, the purpose of a presentation is to highlight the key points for the audience. You can even make an outline of the highlights to help you prepare your presentation.

Your highlights can help you create a script for your presentation. Although this could be a word-for-word script, it's best to use notes to jog your memory during a presentation to make it more personable. For example, put one key point per notecard and number the cards in case you drop them. Don't regurgitate the same information in your paper. Instead, prepare your presentation to discuss why the key points are important or the differences between your point of view and a well-known paper in the same field.

Visual Pizzazz for a Paper Presentation

According to Duke University , visual aids help keep your audience engaged and interested during your presentation. You might use presentation software to create slides that include graphics, charts and bullet points to help your audience follow your talk. This information can enhance the information in your paper.

For example, if your paper mentions how 30 percent of the population performs a certain activity, you could create a bar graph showing 30 percent and 70 percent to give the audience a picture of the discrepancy between the two numbers. Presentation software can also serve as your notecards, outlining the bullet points of what you want to discuss without requiring you to read your presentation word for word. If you won't have access to the proper projection equipment, print visual aids on large paper or foam-core board.

Practice Makes Confidence

To grow in confidence, consider practicing your presentation in front of friends and family members and ask for constructive criticism. This helps you know whether you can stay within the allotted time constraints with your current script or if you need to tweak it. It can also alleviate any nervousness by helping you feel prepared.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology advises people to be prepared to answer questions and outline the details of their work. Think through what questions your audience might have for you and create visual aids to help address those questions. After your presentation, your audience might want clarifications about what you have presented. Although you aren't expected to have all the answers, you can feel more prepared if you think through possible questions or ask your friends and family for their questions before you give the presentation.

  • Create visual aids to help address likely questions as well. After your presentation, your audience might have questions or want clarifications about your paper. How to Make a Successful Research Presentation

Turning a research paper into a visual presentation is difficult; there are pitfalls, and navigating the path to a brief, informative presentation takes time and practice. As a TA for  GEO/WRI 201: Methods in Data Analysis & Scientific Writing this past fall, I saw how this process works from an instructor’s standpoint. In general, your presentation will always benefit from more practice, more feedback, and more revision. By practicing in front of friends, you can get comfortable with presenting your work while receiving feedback. It is hard to know how to revise your presentation if you never practice. If you are presenting to a general audience, getting feedback from someone outside of your discipline is crucial. Terms and ideas that seem intuitive to you may be completely foreign to someone else, and your well-crafted presentation could fall flat.

Less is more

Limit the scope of your presentation, the number of slides, and the text on each slide. In my experience, text works well for organizing slides, orienting the audience to key terms, and annotating important figures–not for explaining complex ideas. Having fewer slides is usually better as well. In general, about one slide per minute of presentation is an appropriate budget. Too many slides is usually a sign that your topic is too broad.

Don’t present your paper. Presentations are usually around 10 min long. You will not have time to explain all of the research you did in a semester (or a year!) in such a short span of time. Instead, focus on the highlight(s). Identify a single compelling research question which your work addressed, and craft a succinct but complete narrative around it.

Craft a compelling research narrative

After identifying the focused research question, walk your audience through your research as if it were a story. Presentations with strong narrative arcs are clear, captivating, and compelling.

  • Introduction (exposition — rising action)

Orient the audience and draw them in by demonstrating the relevance and importance of your research story with strong global motive. Provide them with the necessary vocabulary and background knowledge to understand the plot of your story. Introduce the key studies (characters) relevant in your story and build tension and conflict with scholarly and data motive. By the end of your introduction, your audience should clearly understand your research question and be dying to know how you resolve the tension built through motive.

  • Methods (rising action)

The methods section should transition smoothly and logically from the introduction. Beware of presenting your methods in a boring, arc-killing, ‘this is what I did.’ Focus on the details that set your story apart from the stories other people have already told. Keep the audience interested by clearly motivating your decisions based on your original research question or the tension built in your introduction.

  • Results (climax)

Less is usually more here. Only present results which are clearly related to the focused research question you are presenting. Make sure you explain the results clearly so that your audience understands what your research found. This is the peak of tension in your narrative arc, so don’t undercut it by quickly clicking through to your discussion.

  • Discussion (falling action)

By now your audience should be dying for a satisfying resolution. Here is where you contextualize your results and begin resolving the tension between past research. Be thorough. If you have too many conflicts left unresolved, or you don’t have enough time to present all of the resolutions, you probably need to further narrow the scope of your presentation.

  • Conclusion (denouement)

Return back to your initial research question and motive, resolving any final conflicts and tying up loose ends. Leave the audience with a clear resolution of your focus research question, and use unresolved tension to set up potential sequels (i.e. further research).

Use your medium to enhance the narrative

Visual presentations should be dominated by clear, intentional graphics. Subtle animation in key moments (usually during the results or discussion) can add drama to the narrative arc and make conflict resolutions more satisfying. You are narrating a story written in images, videos, cartoons, and graphs. While your paper is mostly text, with graphics to highlight crucial points, your slides should be the opposite. Adapting to the new medium may require you to create or acquire far more graphics than you included in your paper, but it is necessary to create an engaging presentation.

The most important thing you can do for your presentation is to practice and revise. Bother your friends, your roommates, TAs–anybody who will sit down and listen to your work. Beyond that, think about presentations you have found compelling and try to incorporate some of those elements into your own. Remember you want your work to be comprehensible; you aren’t creating experts in 10 minutes. Above all, try to stay passionate about what you did and why. You put the time in, so show your audience that it’s worth it.

How to Structure your Presentation, with Examples

For many people the thought of delivering a presentation is a daunting task and brings about a  great deal of nerves . However, if you take some time to understand how effective presentations are structured and then apply this structure to your own presentation, you’ll appear much more confident and relaxed.

Here is our complete guide for structuring your presentation, with examples at the end of the article to demonstrate these points.

Why is structuring a presentation so important?

If you’ve ever sat through a great presentation, you’ll have left feeling either inspired or informed on a given topic. This isn’t because the speaker was the most knowledgeable or motivating person in the world. Instead, it’s because they know how to structure presentations – they have crafted their message in a logical and simple way that has allowed the audience can keep up with them and take away key messages.

Research has supported this, with studies showing that audiences retain structured information  40% more accurately  than unstructured information.

In fact, not only is structuring a presentation important for the benefit of the audience’s understanding, it’s also important for you as the speaker. A good structure helps you remain calm, stay on topic, and avoid any awkward silences.

What will affect your presentation structure?

Generally speaking, there is a natural flow that any decent presentation will follow which we will go into shortly. However, you should be aware that all presentation structures will be different in their own unique way and this will be due to a number of factors, including:

  • Whether you need to deliver any demonstrations
  • How  knowledgeable the audience  already is on the given subject
  • How much interaction you want from the audience
  • Any time constraints there are for your talk
  • What setting you are in
  • Your ability to use any kinds of visual assistance

Before choosing the presentation’s structure answer these questions first:

  • What is your presentation’s aim?
  • Who are the audience?
  • What are the main points your audience should remember afterwards?

When reading the points below, think critically about what things may cause your presentation structure to be slightly different. You can add in certain elements and add more focus to certain moments if that works better for your speech.

What is the typical presentation structure?

This is the usual flow of a presentation, which covers all the vital sections and is a good starting point for yours. It allows your audience to easily follow along and sets out a solid structure you can add your content to.

1. Greet the audience and introduce yourself

Before you start delivering your talk, introduce yourself to the audience and clarify who you are and your relevant expertise. This does not need to be long or incredibly detailed, but will help build an immediate relationship between you and the audience. It gives you the chance to briefly clarify your expertise and why you are worth listening to. This will help establish your ethos so the audience will trust you more and think you’re credible.

2. Introduction

In the introduction you need to explain the subject and purpose of your presentation whilst gaining the audience’s interest and confidence. It’s sometimes helpful to think of your introduction as funnel-shaped to help filter down your topic:

  • Introduce your general topic
  • Explain your topic area
  • State the issues/challenges in this area you will be exploring
  • State your presentation’s purpose – this is the basis of your presentation so ensure that you provide a statement explaining how the topic will be treated, for example, “I will argue that…” or maybe you will “compare”, “analyse”, “evaluate”, “describe” etc.
  • Provide a statement of what you’re hoping the outcome of the presentation will be, for example, “I’m hoping this will be provide you with…”
  • Show a preview of the organisation of your presentation

In this section also explain:

  • The length of the talk.
  • Signal whether you want audience interaction – some presenters prefer the audience to ask questions throughout whereas others allocate a specific section for this.
  • If it applies, inform the audience whether to take notes or whether you will be providing handouts.

The way you structure your introduction can depend on the amount of time you have been given to present: a  sales pitch  may consist of a quick presentation so you may begin with your conclusion and then provide the evidence. Conversely, a speaker presenting their idea for change in the world would be better suited to start with the evidence and then conclude what this means for the audience.

Keep in mind that the main aim of the introduction is to grab the audience’s attention and connect with them.

3. The main body of your talk

The main body of your talk needs to meet the promises you made in the introduction. Depending on the nature of your presentation, clearly segment the different topics you will be discussing, and then work your way through them one at a time – it’s important for everything to be organised logically for the audience to fully understand. There are many different ways to organise your main points, such as, by priority, theme, chronologically etc.

  • Main points should be addressed one by one with supporting evidence and examples.
  • Before moving on to the next point you should provide a mini-summary.
  • Links should be clearly stated between ideas and you must make it clear when you’re moving onto the next point.
  • Allow time for people to take relevant notes and stick to the topics you have prepared beforehand rather than straying too far off topic.

When planning your presentation write a list of main points you want to make and ask yourself “What I am telling the audience? What should they understand from this?” refining your answers this way will help you produce clear messages.

4. Conclusion

In presentations the conclusion is frequently underdeveloped and lacks purpose which is a shame as it’s the best place to reinforce your messages. Typically, your presentation has a specific goal – that could be to convert a number of the audience members into customers, lead to a certain number of enquiries to make people knowledgeable on specific key points, or to motivate them towards a shared goal.

Regardless of what that goal is, be sure to summarise your main points and their implications. This clarifies the overall purpose of your talk and reinforces your reason for being there.

Follow these steps:

  • Signal that it’s nearly the end of your presentation, for example, “As we wrap up/as we wind down the talk…”
  • Restate the topic and purpose of your presentation – “In this speech I wanted to compare…”
  • Summarise the main points, including their implications and conclusions
  • Indicate what is next/a call to action/a thought-provoking takeaway
  • Move on to the last section

5. Thank the audience and invite questions

Conclude your talk by thanking the audience for their time and invite them to  ask any questions  they may have. As mentioned earlier, personal circumstances will affect the structure of your presentation.

Many presenters prefer to make the Q&A session the key part of their talk and try to speed through the main body of the presentation. This is totally fine, but it is still best to focus on delivering some sort of initial presentation to set the tone and topics for discussion in the Q&A.

Demonstration

Use the demonstration structure when you have something useful to show. This is usually used when you want to show how a product works. Steve Jobs frequently used this technique in his presentations.

  • Explain why the product is valuable.
  • Describe why the product is necessary.
  • Explain what problems it can solve for the audience.
  • Demonstrate the product  to support what you’ve been saying.
  • Make suggestions of other things it can do to make the audience curious.

Problem-solution

This structure is particularly useful in persuading the audience.

  • Briefly frame the issue.
  • Go into the issue in detail showing why it ‘s such a problem. Use logos and pathos for this – the logical and emotional appeals.
  • Provide the solution and explain why this would also help the audience.
  • Call to action – something you want the audience to do which is straightforward and pertinent to the solution.

Storytelling

As well as incorporating  stories in your presentation , you can organise your whole presentation as a story. There are lots of different type of story structures you can use – a popular choice is the monomyth – the hero’s journey. In a monomyth, a hero goes on a difficult journey or takes on a challenge – they move from the familiar into the unknown. After facing obstacles and ultimately succeeding the hero returns home, transformed and with newfound wisdom.

Another popular choice for using a story to structure your presentation is in media ras (in the middle of thing). In this type of story you launch right into the action by providing a snippet/teaser of what’s happening and then you start explaining the events that led to that event. This is engaging because you’re starting your story at the most exciting part which will make the audience curious – they’ll want to know how you got there.

Remaining method

The remaining method structure is good for situations where you’re presenting your perspective on a controversial topic which has split people’s opinions.

  • Go into the issue in detail showing why it’s such a problem – use logos and pathos.
  • Rebut your opponents’ solutions  – explain why their solutions could be useful because the audience will see this as fair and will therefore think you’re trustworthy, and then explain why you think these solutions are not valid.
  • After you’ve presented all the alternatives provide your solution, the remaining solution. This is very persuasive because it looks like the winning idea, especially with the audience believing that you’re fair and trustworthy.

Transitions

When delivering presentations it’s important for your words and ideas to flow so your audience can understand how everything links together and why it’s all relevant. This can be done  using speech transitions  which are words and phrases that allow you to smoothly move from one point to another so that your speech flows and your presentation is unified.

Transitions can be one word, a phrase or a full sentence – there are many different forms, here are some examples:

Moving from the introduction to the first point

Signify to the audience that you will now begin discussing the first main point:

  • Now that you’re aware of the overview, let’s begin with…
  • First, let’s begin with…
  • I will first cover…
  • My first point covers…
  • To get started, let’s look at…

Shifting between similar points

Move from one point to a similar one:

  • In the same way…
  • Likewise…
  • Equally…
  • This is similar to…
  • Similarly…

Internal summaries

Internal summarising consists of summarising before moving on to the next point. You must inform the audience:

  • What part of the presentation you covered – “In the first part of this speech we’ve covered…”
  • What the key points were – “Precisely how…”
  • How this links in with the overall presentation – “So that’s the context…”
  • What you’re moving on to – “Now I’d like to move on to the second part of presentation which looks at…”

Physical movement

You can move your body and your standing location when you transition to another point. The audience find it easier to follow your presentation and movement will increase their interest.

A common technique for incorporating movement into your presentation is to:

  • Start your introduction by standing in the centre of the stage.
  • For your first point you stand on the left side of the stage.
  • You discuss your second point from the centre again.
  • You stand on the right side of the stage for your third point.
  • The conclusion occurs in the centre.

Key slides for your presentation

Slides are a useful tool for most presentations: they can greatly assist in the delivery of your message and help the audience follow along with what you are saying. Key slides include:

  • An intro slide outlining your ideas
  • A  summary slide  with core points to remember
  • High quality image slides to supplement what you are saying

There are some presenters who choose not to use slides at all, though this is more of a rarity. Slides can be a powerful tool if used properly, but the problem is that many fail to do just that. Here are some golden rules to follow when using slides in a presentation:

  • Don’t over fill them  – your slides are there to assist your speech, rather than be the focal point. They should have as little information as possible, to avoid distracting people from your talk.
  • A picture says a thousand words  – instead of filling a slide with text, instead, focus on one or two images or diagrams to help support and explain the point you are discussing at that time.
  • Make them readable  – depending on the size of your audience, some may not be able to see small text or images, so make everything large enough to fill the space.
  • Don’t rush through slides  – give the audience enough time to digest each slide.

Guy Kawasaki, an entrepreneur and author, suggests that slideshows should follow a  10-20-30 rule :

  • There should be a maximum of 10 slides – people rarely remember more than one concept afterwards so there’s no point overwhelming them with unnecessary information.
  • The presentation should last no longer than 20 minutes as this will leave time for questions and discussion.
  • The font size should be a minimum of 30pt because the audience reads faster than you talk so less information on the slides means that there is less chance of the audience being distracted.

Group Presentations

Group presentations are structured in the same way as presentations with one speaker but usually require more rehearsal and practices.  Clean transitioning between speakers  is very important in producing a presentation that flows well. One way of doing this consists of:

  • Briefly recap on what you covered in your section: “So that was a brief introduction on what health anxiety is and how it can affect somebody”
  • Introduce the next speaker in the team and explain what they will discuss: “Now Elnaz will talk about the prevalence of health anxiety.”
  • Then end by looking at the next speaker, gesturing towards them and saying their name: “Elnaz”.
  • The next speaker should acknowledge this with a quick: “Thank you Joe.”

From this example you can see how the different sections of the presentations link which makes it easier for the audience to follow and remain engaged.

This presentation by ex-Google CEO  Eric Schmidt  demonstrates some of the most important lessons he and his team have learnt with regards to working with some of the most talented individuals they hired. The simplistic yet cohesive style of all of the slides is something to be appreciated. They are relatively straightforward, yet add power and clarity to the narrative of the presentation.

Start with why – by Simon Sinek

Since being released in 2009, this presentation has been viewed almost four million times all around the world. The message itself is very powerful, however, it’s not an idea that hasn’t been heard before. What makes this presentation so powerful is the simple message he is getting across, and the straightforward and understandable manner in which he delivers it. Also note that he doesn’t use any slides, just a whiteboard where he creates a simple diagram of his opinion.

The Wisdom of a Third Grade Dropout – by Rick Rigsby

Here’s an example of a presentation given by a relatively unknown individual looking to inspire the next generation of graduates. Rick’s presentation is unique in many ways compared to the two above. Notably, he uses no visual prompts and includes a great deal of humour.

However, what is similar is the structure he uses. He first introduces his message that the wisest man he knew was a third-grade dropout. He then proceeds to deliver his main body of argument, and in the end, concludes with his message. This powerful speech keeps the viewer engaged throughout, through a mixture of heart-warming sentiment, powerful life advice and engaging humour.

As you can see from the examples above, and as it has been expressed throughout, a great presentation structure means analysing the core message of your presentation. Decide on a key message you want to impart the audience with, and then craft an engaging way of delivering it.

By preparing a solid structure, and  practising your talk  beforehand, you can walk into the presentation with confidence and deliver a meaningful message to an interested audience.

How to Prepare for a Paper Presentation at an Academic Conference

 In my previous post, I laid out a timeline for choosing an academic conference.  This post will lay out four steps to help you successfully prepare for a paper presentation at an academic conference.

Pay attention to the deadline for proposals . 

Your proposal outlines the paper you are going to write, not a paper you have written . You may treat your proposal as a commitment device to “force” you to write the paper, but the final paper may well differ from your original intention.

Write a winning abstract to get your paper accepted into the conference. 

Abstracts are an afterthought to many graduate students, but they are the what the reviewer looks at first. To get your paper accepted to a conference, you’ll need to write an abstract of 200 to 500 words .

The emphasis should be on brevity and clarity. It should tell the reader what your paper is about, why the reader should be interested, and why the paper should be accepted.

Additionally, it should:

  • Specify your thesis
  • Identify your paper fills a gap in the current literature.
  • Outline what you actually do in the paper.
  • Point out your original contribution.
  • Include a concluding sentence.

Academic Conferences and Publishing International offers some additional advice on writing a conference abstract  as you prepare for your paper presentation at an academic conference.

Pay attention to your presentation itself.

In order to convey excitement about your paper, you need to think about your presentation as well as the findings you are communicating.

Note the conference time limit and stick to it. Practice while timing yourself, and do it in front of a mirror. I also recommend practicing in front of your peers; organizing a departmental brown bag lunch could be a great way to do this. As you are preparing, keep in mind that reading from notes is better than reading directly from your paper.

Once you arrive at the conference, check the location of the room as soon as you can before the event. Arrive early to make sure any audiovisual equipment you plan to use is working, and be ready to present without it in case it is not.

Always stand when giving your paper presentation at an academic conference. Begin by stating your name and institution. Establish eye contact across the room, and speak slowly and clearly to your audience. Explain the structure of your presentation. End with your contribution to your discipline. Finally, be polite (not defensive) when engaging in discussion and answering questions about your research.

By focusing on (a) making sure your work contributes something to your field (b) adhering to deadlines and convincing conference organizers that your paper is worth presenting and (c) creating a compelling presentation that aptly highlights the content of your research, you’ll make the most of your time at the conference.

Every research endeavor ends up with the communication of its findings. Graduate-level research culminates in a thesis defense , while many academic and scientific disciplines are published in peer-reviewed journals. In a business context, PowerPoint research presentation is the default format for reporting the findings to stakeholders.

Condensing months of work into a few slides can prove to be challenging. It requires particular skills to create and deliver a research presentation that promotes informed decisions and drives long-term projects forward.

A research presentation is the communication of research findings, typically delivered to an audience of peers, colleagues, students, or professionals. In the academe, it is meant to showcase the importance of the research paper , state the findings and the analysis of those findings, and seek feedback that could further the research.

The presentation of research becomes even more critical in the business world as the insights derived from it are the basis of strategic decisions of organizations. Information from this type of report can aid companies in maximizing the sales and profit of their business. Major projects such as research and development (R&D) in a new field, the launch of a new product or service, or even corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives will require the presentation of research findings to prove their feasibility.

Market research and technical research are examples of business-type research presentations you will commonly encounter.

In this article, we’ve compiled all the essential tips, including some examples and templates, to get you started with creating and delivering a stellar research presentation tailored specifically for the business context.

Various research suggests that the average attention span of adults during presentations is around 20 minutes, with a notable drop in an engagement at the 10-minute mark . Beyond that, you might see your audience doing other things.

How can you avoid such a mistake? The answer lies in the adage “keep it simple, stupid” or KISS. We don’t mean dumbing down your content but rather presenting it in a way that is easily digestible and accessible to your audience. One way you can do this is by organizing your research presentation using a clear structure.

Here are the slides you should prioritize when creating your research presentation PowerPoint.

1.  Title Page

The title page is the first thing your audience will see during your presentation, so put extra effort into it to make an impression. Of course, writing presentation titles and title pages will vary depending on the type of presentation you are to deliver. In the case of a research presentation, you want a formal and academic-sounding one. It should include:

  • The full title of the report
  • The date of the report
  • The name of the researchers or department in charge of the report
  • The name of the organization for which the presentation is intended

When writing the title of your research presentation, it should reflect the topic and objective of the report. Focus only on the subject and avoid adding redundant phrases like “A research on” or “A study on.” However, you may use phrases like “Market Analysis” or “Feasibility Study” because they help identify the purpose of the presentation. Doing so also serves a long-term purpose for the filing and later retrieving of the document.

2. Executive Summary Slide

The executive summary marks the beginning of the body of the presentation, briefly summarizing the key discussion points of the research. Specifically, the summary may state the following:

  • The purpose of the investigation and its significance within the organization’s goals
  • The methods used for the investigation
  • The major findings of the investigation
  • The conclusions and recommendations after the investigation

Although the executive summary encompasses the entry of the research presentation, it should not dive into all the details of the work on which the findings, conclusions, and recommendations were based. Creating the executive summary requires a focus on clarity and brevity, especially when translating it to a PowerPoint document where space is limited.

Each point should be presented in a clear and visually engaging manner to capture the audience’s attention and set the stage for the rest of the presentation. Use visuals, bullet points, and minimal text to convey information efficiently.

3. Introduction/ Project Description Slides

In this section, your goal is to provide your audience with the information that will help them understand the details of the presentation. Provide a detailed description of the project, including its goals, objectives, scope, and methods for gathering and analyzing data.

You want to answer these fundamental questions:

  • What specific questions are you trying to answer, problems you aim to solve, or opportunities you seek to explore?
  • Why is this project important, and what prompted it?
  • What are the boundaries of your research or initiative? 
  • How were the data gathered?

Important: The introduction should exclude specific findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

4. Data Presentation and Analyses Slides

This is the longest section of a research presentation, as you’ll present the data you’ve gathered and provide a thorough analysis of that data to draw meaningful conclusions. The format and components of this section can vary widely, tailored to the specific nature of your research.

For example, if you are doing market research, you may include the market potential estimate, competitor analysis, and pricing analysis. These elements will help your organization determine the actual viability of a market opportunity.

Visual aids like charts, graphs, tables, and diagrams are potent tools to convey your key findings effectively. These materials may be numbered and sequenced (Figure 1, Figure 2, and so forth), accompanied by text to make sense of the insights.

5. Conclusions

The conclusion of a research presentation is where you pull together the ideas derived from your data presentation and analyses in light of the purpose of the research. For example, if the objective is to assess the market of a new product, the conclusion should determine the requirements of the market in question and tell whether there is a product-market fit.

Designing your conclusion slide should be straightforward and focused on conveying the key takeaways from your research. Keep the text concise and to the point. Present it in bullet points or numbered lists to make the content easily scannable.

6. Recommendations

The findings of your research might reveal elements that may not align with your initial vision or expectations. These deviations are addressed in the recommendations section of your presentation, which outlines the best course of action based on the result of the research.

What emerging markets should we target next? Do we need to rethink our pricing strategies? Which professionals should we hire for this special project? — these are some of the questions that may arise when coming up with this part of the research.

Recommendations may be combined with the conclusion, but presenting them separately to reinforce their urgency. In the end, the decision-makers in the organization or your clients will make the final call on whether to accept or decline the recommendations.

7. Questions Slide

Members of your audience are not involved in carrying out your research activity, which means there’s a lot they don’t know about its details. By offering an opportunity for questions, you can invite them to bridge that gap, seek clarification, and engage in a dialogue that enhances their understanding.

If your research is more business-oriented, facilitating a question and answer after your presentation becomes imperative as it’s your final appeal to encourage buy-in for your recommendations.

A simple “Ask us anything” slide can indicate that you are ready to accept questions.

1. Focus on the Most Important Findings

The truth about presenting research findings is that your audience doesn’t need to know everything. Instead, they should receive a distilled, clear, and meaningful overview that focuses on the most critical aspects.

You will likely have to squeeze in the oral presentation of your research into a 10 to 20-minute presentation, so you have to make the most out of the time given to you. In the presentation, don’t soak in the less important elements like historical backgrounds. Decision-makers might even ask you to skip these portions and focus on sharing the findings.

2. Do Not Read Word-per-word

Reading word-for-word from your presentation slides intensifies the danger of losing your audience’s interest. Its effect can be detrimental, especially if the purpose of your research presentation is to gain approval from the audience. So, how can you avoid this mistake?

  • Make a conscious design decision to keep the text on your slides minimal. Your slides should serve as visual cues to guide your presentation.
  • Structure your presentation as a narrative or story. Stories are more engaging and memorable than dry, factual information.
  • Prepare speaker notes with the key points of your research. Glance at it when needed.
  • Engage with the audience by maintaining eye contact and asking rhetorical questions.

3. Don’t Go Without Handouts

Handouts are paper copies of your presentation slides that you distribute to your audience. They typically contain the summary of your key points, but they may also provide supplementary information supporting data presented through tables and graphs.

The purpose of distributing presentation handouts is to easily retain the key points you presented as they become good references in the future. Distributing handouts in advance allows your audience to review the material and come prepared with questions or points for discussion during the presentation.

4. Actively Listen

An equally important skill that a presenter must possess aside from speaking is the ability to listen. We are not just talking about listening to what the audience is saying but also considering their reactions and nonverbal cues. If you sense disinterest or confusion, you can adapt your approach on the fly to re-engage them.

For example, if some members of your audience are exchanging glances, they may be skeptical of the research findings you are presenting. This is the best time to reassure them of the validity of your data and provide a concise overview of how it came to be. You may also encourage them to seek clarification.

5. Be Confident

Anxiety can strike before a presentation – it’s a common reaction whenever someone has to speak in front of others. If you can’t eliminate your stress, try to manage it.

People hate public speaking not because they simply hate it. Most of the time, it arises from one’s belief in themselves. You don’t have to take our word for it. Take Maslow’s theory that says a threat to one’s self-esteem is a source of distress among an individual.

Now, how can you master this feeling? You’ve spent a lot of time on your research, so there is no question about your topic knowledge. Perhaps you just need to rehearse your research presentation. If you know what you will say and how to say it, you will gain confidence in presenting your work.

All sources you use in creating your research presentation should be given proper credit. The APA Style is the most widely used citation style in formal research.

Add references within the text of your presentation slide by giving the author’s last name, year of publication, and page number (if applicable) in parentheses after direct quotations or paraphrased materials. As in:

The alarming rate at which global temperatures rise directly impacts biodiversity (Smith, 2020, p. 27).

If the author’s name and year of publication are mentioned in the text, add only the page number in parentheses after the quotations or paraphrased materials. As in:

According to Smith (2020), the alarming rate at which global temperatures rise directly impacts biodiversity (p. 27).

Image citation

All images from the web, including photos, graphs, and tables, used in your slides should be credited using the format below.

Creator’s Last Name, First Name. “Title of Image.” Website Name, Day Mo. Year, URL. Accessed Day Mo. Year.

Work cited page

A work cited page or reference list should follow after the last slide of your presentation. The list should be alphabetized by the author’s last name and initials followed by the year of publication, the title of the book or article, the place of publication, and the publisher. As in:

Smith, J. A. (2020). Climate Change and Biodiversity: A Comprehensive Study. New York, NY: ABC Publications.

When citing a document from a website, add the source URL after the title of the book or article instead of the place of publication and the publisher. As in:

Smith, J. A. (2020). Climate Change and Biodiversity: A Comprehensive Study. Retrieved from https://www.smith.com/climate-change-and-biodiversity.

Oral presentations usually introduce a discussion of a topic or research paper. A good oral presentation is focused, concise, and interesting in order to trigger a discussion.

  • Be well prepared; write a detailed outline.
  • Introduce the subject.
  • Talk about the sources and the method.
  • Indicate if there are conflicting views about the subject (conflicting views trigger discussion).
  • Make a statement about your new results (if this is your research paper).
  • Use visual aids or handouts if appropriate.

  • Be brief and concise.

A research paper presentation is often used at conferences and in other settings where you have an opportunity to share your research, and get feedback from your colleagues. Although it may seem as simple as summarizing your research and sharing your knowledge, successful research paper PowerPoint presentation examples show us that there’s a little bit more than that involved.

In this article, we’ll highlight how to make a PowerPoint presentation from a research paper, and what to include (as well as what NOT to include). We’ll also touch on how to present a research paper at a conference.

Purpose of a Research Paper Presentation

The purpose of presenting your paper at a conference or forum is different from the purpose of conducting your research and writing up your paper. In this setting, you want to highlight your work instead of including every detail of your research. Likewise, a presentation is an excellent opportunity to get direct feedback from your colleagues in the field. But, perhaps the main reason for presenting your research is to spark interest in your work, and entice the audience to read your research paper.

So, yes, your presentation should summarize your work, but it needs to do so in a way that encourages your audience to seek out your work, and share their interest in your work with others. It’s not enough just to present your research dryly, to get information out there. More important is to encourage engagement with you, your research, and your work.

Tips for Creating Your Research Paper Presentation

In addition to basic PowerPoint presentation recommendations, which we’ll cover later in this article, think about the following when you’re putting together your research paper presentation:

  • Know your audience : First and foremost, who are you presenting to? Students? Experts in your field? Potential funders? Non-experts? The truth is that your audience will probably have a bit of a mix of all of the above. So, make sure you keep that in mind as you prepare your presentation.

  • Your audience is human : In other words, they may be tired, they might be wondering why they’re there, and they will, at some point, be tuning out. So, take steps to help them stay interested in your presentation. You can do that by utilizing effective visuals, summarize your conclusions early, and keep your research easy to understand.
  • Running outline : It’s not IF your audience will drift off, or get lost…it’s WHEN. Keep a running outline, either within the presentation or via a handout. Use visual and verbal clues to highlight where you are in the presentation.
  • Where does your research fit in? You should know of work related to your research, but you don’t have to cite every example. In addition, keep references in your presentation to the end, or in the handout. Your audience is there to hear about your work.
  • Plan B : Anticipate possible questions for your presentation, and prepare slides that answer those specific questions in more detail, but have them at the END of your presentation. You can then jump to them, IF needed.

What Makes a PowerPoint Presentation Effective?

You’ve probably attended a presentation where the presenter reads off of their PowerPoint outline, word for word. Or where the presentation is busy, disorganized, or includes too much information. Here are some simple tips for creating an effective PowerPoint Presentation.

  • Less is more: You want to give enough information to make your audience want to read your paper. So include details, but not too many, and avoid too many formulas and technical jargon.
  • Clean and professional : Avoid excessive colors, distracting backgrounds, font changes, animations, and too many words. Instead of whole paragraphs, bullet points with just a few words to summarize and highlight are best.
  • Know your real-estate : Each slide has a limited amount of space. Use it wisely. Typically one, no more than two points per slide. Balance each slide visually. Utilize illustrations when needed; not extraneously.
  • Keep things visual : Remember, a PowerPoint presentation is a powerful tool to present things visually. Use visual graphs over tables and scientific illustrations over long text. Keep your visuals clean and professional, just like any text you include in your presentation.

Another key to an effective presentation is to practice, practice, and then practice some more. When you’re done with your PowerPoint, go through it with friends and colleagues to see if you need to add (or delete excessive) information. Double and triple check for typos and errors. Know the presentation inside and out, so when you’re in front of your audience, you’ll feel confident and comfortable.

How to Present a Research Paper

If your PowerPoint presentation is solid, and you’ve practiced your presentation, that’s half the battle. Follow the basic advice to keep your audience engaged and interested by making eye contact, encouraging questions, and presenting your information with enthusiasm.

But giving that first page of your deck a little more love can actually go a long way towards grabbing your audience's attention early on and setting the tone for the rest of your presentation.

A stunning presentation cover page can intrigue your audience into wanting to know more and increase engagement with the information you’re presenting. On the other hand, a lackluster slide, or even the lack of one, can dampen audience enthusiasm for your presentation, and maybe even your own.

What's included in a presentation cover page?

A good presentation cover page accomplishes three simple things:

  • It introduces the topic with a straightforward title.
  • It introduces you (and your organization, if applicable)
  • It sets the tone of your presentation.

We probably don't need to tell you this one, but your presentation cover page should be centered around a title. And ideally, a title that's straightforward, descriptive, and simple. If you're finding it hard to keep your title short, add a subtitle (in smaller print) to clarify what you'll be speaking about.

Next, identify the person (or group) who will be giving the presentation. In some cases, this will be as simple as including your own name, and in others, you'll want to include your company name, logo, department, or other identifying information. As a general guideline, you'll need less identifying information if you're giving an internal presentation.

If your audience is mainly folks outside of your company (or there are plans to distribute your deck externally) you'll typically want to include more information to identify your company clearly.

A successful cover page sets the "tone" of your deck -- but what does that really mean? The colors, imagery, fonts, and placements of different elements on your cover page all create a specific visual style that the rest of your deck should follow.

A well-designed page conveys a sense of professionalism and preparedness that a simple monochrome text slide simply cannot. Even if you're not a design expert, you need to pay attention to the aesthetics of your cover page. Fortunately, it's easier than ever to find free, professional-looking presentation templates without needing a degree in graphic design. Whatever you choose, it's important to remain relevant to your presentation (and, if applicable, your company's branding).

You don't need to overcomplicate the format of your cover page, especially if you have a great photo to use as a full background image. Leading With Your Brand

Even if you're the central speaker for a presentation, it might make more sense to highlight your team or brand on your cover page, instead of including your own personal information (you can always include your own contact info at the end of your deck for follow-up questions). Context (if you're speaking at a particular event or annual meeting) can be important to highlight as well on your cover page.

There's a big difference between a cover slide you didn't put much thought into and a slide that makes good use of whitespace and leans on strong copy. Sometimes, the best way to lead an audience into your presentation is to create space for a little mystery.

If you're giving a more casual presentation or a pitch that doesn't need to follow a particular format, consider going the minimal route and opening with a simple cover page slide that asks your audience a question (one that you of course plan to answer).

Many presentations include an agenda slide directly after your cover slide, but that doesn't mean you can use your cover slide to set a clear purpose upfront. Consider using your subtitle to explain a more robust (but still simple!) description of what you'll cover.

Insert a form or quiz into PowerPoint

Tip:  Learn more  about Microsoft Forms or get started  right away and create a survey , quiz, or poll. Want more advanced branding, question types, and data analysis? Try Dynamics 365 Customer Voice .

You can create a new form or quiz in Microsoft Forms and insert it into your PowerPoint presentation.

Inserting a form is only available to Office 365 Education and Microsoft 365 Apps for business customers with version 1807 (Build 16.0.10711.20012) or later of PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on a PC.

People responding to a form or quiz can use PowerPoint on a PC, macOS, or the web.

Create a new form or quiz

Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your school or work credentials.

Open your PowerPoint presentation and choose the slide in which you want to insert a form or quiz.

On the Insert tab, select Forms .

If you don't see Forms  on the Insert tab, your administrator may have turned this feature off for your organization. Contact your admin to turn on the Forms feature in PowerPoint for your organization.

Note for admins : If you haven't deployed Office add-ins  for your organization, you can still enable usage of the Forms feature in PowerPoint. Learn more .

Important:  If you're unable to insert a form, make sure your web add-ins aren't disabled. In PowerPoint, select Files > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings . In the Trust Center dialog box, choose Trusted Add-in Catalogs . Under Use these settings to manage your web add-in catalogs , uncheck both, Don't allow any web add-ins to start and Don't allow web add-ins from the Office Store to start .

A Forms panel will open and dock on the right side of your PowerPoint presentation.

Under My forms, click +New Form or +New Quiz to begin creating a form or quiz.

When you're done creating your form or quiz, it will be embedded in your PowerPoint slide and appear at the top of your My forms list under the +New Form and +New Quiz buttons.

We prove a chain lemma for inner product spaces over commutative local rings R with residue field other than \(\mathbb {F}_2\) and use this to show that the usual presentation of the Grothendieck–Witt group of symmetric bilinear forms over R as the zeroth Milnor–Witt K -group holds provided the residue field of R is not \(\mathbb {F}_2\) .

1 Introduction

Extending work of Witt [ 12 ] to include the case of characteristic 2 fields, Milnor–Husemoller prove in [ 6 , Lemma IV.1.1] that the Witt group W ( F ) of inner product spaces, aka non-degenerate symmetric bilinear forms, of a field F is additively generated by elements \(\langle a \rangle \) , with \(a\in F^*\) , subject to the following three relations.

For all \(a,b\in F^*\) we have \(\langle a^2b \rangle =\langle b \rangle \) .

For all \(a\in F^*\) we have \(\langle a \rangle + \langle -a \rangle = 0\) .

For all \(a,b, a+b\in F^*\) we have \(\langle a \rangle + \langle b \rangle = \langle a+b\rangle + \langle (a+b)ab\rangle \) .

From this, one readily obtains a presentation of the Grothendieck-Witt group GW ( F ) of F with the same generators and relations (1), (2’), (3) where:

For all \(a\in F^*\) we have \(\langle a \rangle + \langle -a \rangle = \langle 1 \rangle + \langle -1\rangle \) .

The abelian group with generators \(\langle a\rangle \) , \(a\in R^*\) , and relations (1), (2’), (3) (and R in place of F ) is also known as the zero-th Milnor-Witt K -group \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) of R [ 3 , 8 , 11 ]. The presentation of GW ( R ) as the zeroth Milnor-Witt K -group has become important in applications of \(\mathbb {A}^1\) -homotopy theory [ 1 , 8 ] and the homology of classical groups [ 11 ] where the sheaf of Milnor-Witt K -groups plays a paramount role. To date, the lack of understanding of the relation between Milnor-Witt K -theory and Grothendieck-Witt groups when \({\text {char}}(F)=2\) is the reason that many results are only known away from characteristic 2. This paper therefore is part of the effort to establish these applications also in characteristic 2 and in mixed characteristic.

1.1 Statement of results

Theorem 1.2.

Of course, this is vacuous if V has no orthogonal basis. Theorem 1.2 was previously known when R is a field of characteristic not 2 [ 12 , Satz 7], [ 5 , Theorem I.5.2], and the local case easily reduces to the field case; see Lemma 2.4 . The Theorem does not hold when \(F=\mathbb {F}_2\) ; see Remark 2.11 and Lemma 2.4 . The proof of Theorem 1.2 is given in Sect.  2 .

which sends \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle _{\mathbb {Z}}\) and \(h_{\mathbb {Z}}\) to \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle \) and h . Our main result is the following which asserts that this ring homomorphism is surjective with kernel the ideal generated by three types of relations.

Theorem 1.3

For all \(a\in R^*\) we have \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a^2 \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle =0\) .

For all \(a\in R^*\) we have \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle \cdot h = 0\) .

(Steinberg relation) For all \(a,1-a\in R^*\) we have \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle \cdot \langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle 1-a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle =0\) .

In the context of Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups, the Steinberg relation is also called Witt relation.

If the residue field F of R satisfies \(F\ne \mathbb {F}_2,\mathbb {F}_3\) and we impose only the Steinberg relation (3) in Theorem 1.3 , then imposing relation (1) is equivalent to imposing relation (2); see Lemma 3.6 (2) below. In particular, if the residue field is not \(\mathbb {F}_2,\mathbb {F}_3\) , then GW ( R ) is the ring quotient of the group ring \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*/(R^*)^2]\) of the group of unit square classes modulo the Steinberg relation (3). When \(R=F\) is any field, including \(F=\mathbb {F}_2, \mathbb {F}_3\) , we can dispense with the relation (2) as well and obtain the presentation of GW ( F ) as the quotient of the group ring \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*/(R^*)^2]\) modulo the Steinberg relations. Indeed, if \(R=\mathbb {F}_3\) , relations (1) and (2) are vacuous and if \(R=\mathbb {F}_2\) , all three relations (1), (2) and (3) are vacuous but the map \(\pi :\mathbb {Z}=\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\rightarrow GW(R)\) in ( 1.1 ) is already an isomorphism.

Theorem 1.3 was previously known for R a field (including \(\mathbb {F}_2\) ) [ 6 ], and for commutative local rings with residue field F of characteristic not two as long as \(F\ne \mathbb {F}_3\) [ 2 , Theorem 2.2]. The theorem does not hold for local rings with residue field \(\mathbb {F}_2\) , in general; see Proposition 4.1 . The proof of Theorem 1.3 is in Sect.  3 , Corollary 3.5 .

Since the Witt ring W ( R ) is the quotient of the Grothendieck-Witt ring GW ( R ) modulo the ideal generated by \(h=1+\langle -1\rangle \) , we obtain the following from Theorem 1.3 generalising the presentation [ 6 , Lemma IV.1.1] from fields to commutative local rings.

Corollary 1.5

For all \(a,b\in R^*\) we have \(\langle a^2b \rangle =\langle b \rangle \) .

For all \(a\in R^*\) we have \(\langle a \rangle + \langle -a \rangle = 0\) .

For all \(a,b, a+b\in R^*\) we have \(\langle a \rangle + \langle b \rangle = \langle a+b\rangle + \langle (a+b)ab\rangle \) .

2 The chain lemma

Our first goal is to show in Lemma 2.4 below that the Chain Lemma (Theorem 1.2 ) for a local ring is equivalent to the Chain Lemma for its residue field.

Choose any lift \(u_1\) of \(\bar{u}_1\) inside V , then any lift \(u_2\) of \(\bar{u}_2\) inside \(u_1^{\perp }\subset V\) , then any lift \(u_3\) of \(\bar{u}_3\) inside \(\{u_1,u_2\}^{\perp }\subset V\) ... This yields a lift u of \(\bar{u}\) . Assume \(\bar{u}=(\bar{u}_1,\bar{u}_2, \bar{u}_3,...,\bar{u}_n)\) and \(\bar{v}=(\bar{v}_1,\bar{v}_2, \bar{u}_3,...,\bar{u}_n)\) . Let \(u=(u_1,...,u_n)\) be a lift of \(\bar{u}\) . Let \((v_1,v_2)\) be a lift of \((\bar{v}_1,\bar{v}_2)\) inside \(\{u_3,...,u_n\}^{\perp }\) . Then we can choose \(v=(v_1,v_2,u_3,...,u_n)\) as lift of \(\bar{v}\) . \(\square \)

Choose a sequence \(\bar{B}_i\) , \(i=0,...,r\) of orthogonal bases of \(V_F\) such that \(\bar{B}_0\) and \(\bar{B}_r\) are the images of B and C in \(V_F\) and \(\bar{B}_i\) differs from \(\bar{B}_{i+1}\) in at most two places, \(i=0,...,r-1\) . By Lemma 2.3 , for \(i=0,...,r-1\) we can choose lifts \(B_i\) , \(C_{i+1}\) of \(\bar{B}_i\) and \(\bar{B}_{i+1}\) such that \(B_i\) and \(C_{i+1}\) differ in at most two places. By Lemma 2.2 , we have \(B\approx _R B_0\) , \(B_i\approx _RC_i\) for \(i=1,...,r-1\) and \(C_r\approx _RC\) . Hence,

Our next goal is to prove in Theorem 2.6 the Chain Lemma (Theorem 1.2 ) for infinite fields of characteristic 2. We will make frequent use of the following.

Let \(n\ge 2\) be an integer, and let \(u=(u_1,...,u_n)\) be an orthogonal basis of an inner product space V of rank n over a field F . Let \(v_1=a_1u_1+ \cdots +a_nu_n\) , where \(a_1,...,a_n\in F\) . If for all \(2\le r \le n\) , the partial linear combination \(v_1^{(r)} = a_1u_1+\cdots +a_ru_r\) is anisotropic, then \(v_1=v_1^{(n)}\) can be extended to an orthogonal basis \(v=(v_1,...,v_n)\) of V such that \(u\approx _F v\) .

Choose \(v_2\) to be a generator of the orthogonal of \(v_1^{(2)}\) inside \(Fu_1\perp Fu_2\) . Then \(u \approx (v_1^{(2)},v_2,u_3,...,u_n)\) . For an integer r with \(2 \le r <n\) , assume we have constructed elements \(v_2,...,v_{r}\in V\) such that \((v_1^{(r)}, v_2,...,v_{r}, u_{r+1},...,u_n)\) is an orthogonal basis of V that is chain equivalent to u . Note that \(v_1^{(r+1)}\) is an anisotropic vector in \(Fv_1^{(r)}\perp Fu_{r+1}\) . Choose \(v_{r+1}\) to be a generator of the orthogonal complement \((v_1^{(r+1)})^{\perp }\) of \(Fv_1^{(r+1)}\) inside \(Fv_1^{(r)}\perp Fu_{r+1}\) . Then

By induction on r , we obtain the case \(r=n\) which is the statement of the lemma. \(\square \)

Theorem 2.6

Let F be a field of characteristic 2, and let V be an inner product space over F . If F is finite, assume that \(\dim _FV=3\) . Then any two orthogonal bases of V are chain equivalent.

Assume first that \(F\ne \mathbb {F}_2\) . We proceed by induction on \(n=\dim _F V\ge 0\) . For \(n=0,1,2\) , there is nothing to prove. If F is finite, assume \(n=3\) , otherwise let \(n\ge 3\) . For an orthogonal basis \(u=(u_1,u_2,...,u_n)\) of V , let \(C(u)\subset V\) be the set of all vectors \(\alpha _1 u_1 + \alpha _2 u_2 + \cdots + \alpha _n u_n \in V\) , with \(\alpha _i\in F\) , such that

Let \(v=(v_1,v_2,...,v_n)\) be another orthogonal basis of V and consider the corresponding set C ( v ). By Lemma 2.7 below, the intersection \(C(u)\cap C(v)\) is non-empty. Thus, we can choose a vector \(u'_1=v'_1\in C(u)\cap C(v)\) . By Lemma 2.5 we can extend \(u'_1=v'_1\) to orthogonal bases \(u'=(u'_1,u'_2,...,u'_n)\) and \(v'=(v'_1,v'_2,...,v'_n)\) of V such that \(u\approx u'\) and \(v\approx v'\) . Now \((u'_2,...,u'_n)\) and \((v'_2,...,v'_n)\) are orthogonal bases of \((u'_1)^{\perp } = (v'_1)^{\perp }\) and thus \((u'_2,...,u'_n)\approx (v'_2,...,v'_n)\) by the induction hypothesis. In particular, \(u'\approx v'\) since \(u'_1=v'_1\) , and we have proved \(u\approx u'\approx v' \approx v.\)

For \(F=\mathbb {F}_2\) there is only one inner product space V of dimension 3, namely \(\langle 1,1,1\rangle \) ; see for instance Proposition 3.1 below. The only anisotropic vectors of V are the vectors of the standard orthonormal basis \(e_1\) , \(e_2\) , \(e_3\) , and \(e=e_1+e_2+e_3\) . The vector e cannot be extended to an orthogonal basis since every vector in its orthogonal complement \(e^{\perp } \subset V\) is isotropic. Thus, the only orthogonal basis of V is \(e_1,e_2,e_3\) and the theorem trivially holds. \(\square \)

In order to prove Theorem 1.2 for finite fields of characteristic 2 other than \(\mathbb {F}_2\) we need the following lemma.

Let \(F\ne \mathbb {F}_2\) be a finite field of characteristic 2, and let \(n\ge 4\) be an even integer. Assume that any two orthogonal bases of an inner product space over F of dimension smaller than n are chain equivalent. Then the standard orthonormal basis e and the orthogonal basis \(\hat{e}\) of \(\langle 1,1,...,1\rangle = \langle 1 \rangle ^{\oplus n}\) below are chain equivalent:

where \(\hat{e}_r = \sum _{1 \le i \ne r \le n }e_i\) .

The orthogonal basis \(e=(e_1,e_2,...,e_n)\) is chain equivalent to an orthogonal basis \(u=(u_1,...,u_n)\) with \(u_1=a_1e_1+ \cdots +a_ne_n\) if for \(r=1,...,n\) we have \(\sum _{1 \le i \le r }a_i \ne 0\) ; see Lemma 2.5 . Similarly, \(\hat{e}=(\hat{e}_1, \hat{e}_2,...,\hat{e}_n)\) is chain equivalent to an orthogonal basis \(v=(v_1,...,v_n)\) with \(v_1=b_1\hat{e}_1+ \cdots +b_n\hat{e}_n\) if for \(r=1,...,n\) we have \(\sum _{1 \le i \le r }b_i \ne 0\) . Note that

where \(\hat{b}_r = \sum _{1 \le i \ne r \le n }b_i\) . Choose elements \(b_1,b_n\in F\) such that \(b_1,b_n,b_1+b_n\ne 0\) . This is possible since F has more than 2 elements. Set \(b_i=0\) for \(1<i<n\) and \(a_i=\hat{b}_i\) . Then

and therefore, for \(r=1,...,n\) , we have

In particular, the last two sums are non-zero for \(r=1,...,n\) . Hence, there are orthogonal bases u and v as above with \(e \approx u\) , \(\hat{e}\approx v\) and \(u_1=v_1\) . By assumption applied to the inner product space \(u_1^{\perp }=v_1^{\perp }\) of dimension \(n-1\) , we have \((u_2,...,u_n) \approx (v_2,...,v_n)\) . Therefore,

Example 2.9

As an illustration of Lemma 2.8 , the following explicitly shows that \((e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4) \approx (\hat{e}_1, \hat{e}_2,\hat{e}_3,\hat{e}_4) \ {\in \langle 1,1,1,1\rangle }\) over \(\mathbb {F}_4=\mathbb {F}_2[\alpha ]/(\alpha ^2+\alpha +1)\) where we set \(\beta =1+\alpha \) and note that \(\alpha \beta =1\) , \(\alpha +\beta =1\) , \(\alpha ^2=\beta \) , \(\beta ^2=\alpha \) :

In contrast, over \(\mathbb {F}_2\) we have \((e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4) \not \approx (\hat{e}_1, \hat{e}_2,\hat{e}_3,\hat{e}_4)\) ; see Remark 2.11 .

Theorem 2.10

Let F be a finite field of characteristic 2 such that \(F\ne \mathbb {F}_2\) . Let V be an inner product space over F . Then any two orthogonal bases of V are chain equivalent.

since \((u'_2,u'_3,...,u'_{r+1},u_{r+2},...,u_n) \approx (w_2,w_3,...,w_n)\) , by the induction hypothesis applied to \(w_1^{\perp }\) inside V . Finally, the case \(r=n\) is impossible. Indeed, if \(r=n\) , then every vector in \(w_1^{\perp }\subset V\) is isotropic contradicting the the assumption that \((w_2,...,w_n)\) is an orthogonal basis of \(w_1^{\perp }\) . \(\square \)

Proof of Theorem 1.2

The analog of Theorem 2.6 for fields F of characteristic not 2 is classical [ 12 , Satz 7] and holds without restriction on the size of F ; see for instance [ 5 , Theorem I.5.2]. Together with Theorems 2.6 and 2.10 , this implies Theorem 1.2 in view of Lemma 2.4 . \(\square \)

Remark 2.11

The Chain Lemma does not hold for \(R=F=\mathbb {F}_2\) and \(V=\mathbb {F}_2^4\) equipped with the form \(\langle 1,1,1,1 \rangle \) . The orthogonal basis \(e = \{e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4\}\) is only chain equivalent to itself since \(\langle 1 \rangle \perp \langle 1 \rangle \) has unique orthogonal basis \(\{e_1,e_2\}\) . But V has also orthogonal basis \(\hat{e}=\{\hat{e}_1,\hat{e}_2,\hat{e}_3,\hat{e}_4\}\) where \(\hat{e}_i = e_1+e_2+e_3 +e_4 -e_i\) for \(i=1,...,4\) . In particular, the two orthogonal basis e and \(\hat{e}\) of V are not chain equivalent.

3 Presentation of GW ( R )

Proposition 3.1.

For any inner product space V over R there is an isometry

For any inner product space V over R , there is an inner product space W with orthogonal basis such that \(V\perp W\) has an orthogonal basis. In particular, the Grothendieck-Witt group GW ( R ) of inner product spaces is additively generated by one-dimensional spaces \(\langle u \rangle \) , \(u \in R^*\) .

Part (2) follows from the equation in \(M_3(R)\)

Finally, (3) follows from (1) and (2). \(\square \)

By definition, an element \(\sum _{i=1}^n \langle a_{i} \rangle - \sum _{j=1}^m \langle b_{j} \rangle \) of \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) with \(a_{i},b_{j} \in R^*\) is in \(\ker (\pi ) \subset \mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) if and only if there is an inner product space K and an isometry of inner product spaces

By Theorem 1.2 , we can choose a chain of orthogonal bases, \(C_{0}, C_{1},..., C_{N-1}, C_{N}\) such that \(C_i\) and \(C_{i+1}\) differ in at most 2 elements, \(i=0,...,N-1\) , and \(C_0=A\) , \(C_N=B\) . Let R be a commutative ring. Assume we have an isometry of inner product spaces \(\langle a,b\rangle \cong \langle c,d\rangle \) over R where \(a,b,c,d\in R^*\) with \(d=abc\) and \(c = ax^2+by^2\) , \(x,y\in R\) . If in R , we have \(f=as^2 +bt^2\) , then the following equation holds in R

For a commutative local ring R , let \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) be the quotient ring of \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) modulo the ideal generated by the relations (1), (2) and (3) of Theorem 1.3 where \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle a \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle = 1- \langle a \rangle \) , and \(\langle a \rangle \in \mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) is the element corresponding to \(a\in R^*\) .

The isometry \(\langle a,b\rangle \cong \langle c,d\rangle \) implies \(c = ax^2+by^2 \in R\) for some \(x,y\in R\) and \(d=abc\in {R^*/(R^*)^2}\) . Since \(\langle r^2d\rangle = \langle d\rangle \in K_0^{MW}(R)\) , we can assume \(d=abc\in R^*\) . If \(x,y\in R^*\) , we say that c is regularly represented by \(\langle a,b\rangle \) . In this case

in \(K_0^{MW}(R)\) where we used the Steinberg relation for the third equality.

Corollary 3.5

Let \(J \subset \mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) be the ideal generated by the relations (1), (2) and (3) of Theorem 1.3 , that is, J is the kernel of the ring homomorphism \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\rightarrow K^{MW}_0(R)\) . As before, let \(\pi : \mathbb {Z}[R^*] \rightarrow GW(R)\) , \(\langle a \rangle \mapsto \langle a \rangle \) be the canonical ring homomorphism ( 1.1 ). It is well known that \(J \subset \ker \pi \) . Indeed, the first relation is the isometry \(\langle u\rangle \cong \langle a^2u\rangle \) given by the multiplication with \(a\in R^*\) , the second relation follows from the equation in \(M_2(R)\)

that is, \(\left\langle \left( {\begin{matrix}0&{}1\\ 1&{}0\end{matrix}}\right) \right\rangle \cong \langle u \rangle \cdot \left\langle \left( {\begin{matrix}0&{}1\\ 1&{}0\end{matrix}}\right) \right\rangle \) , and the equality \(\left\langle \left( {\begin{matrix}0&{}1\\ 1&{}0\end{matrix}}\right) \right\rangle = h \in GW(R)\) in view of Proposition 3.1 (2) with \(a=b=0\) . The last relation is a consequence of the equality in \(M_2(R)\)

Lemma 3.2 gives us additive generators of \(\ker (\pi )\) . By definition of \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) and Lemma 3.4 , these generators are in J , and so, \(J=\ker (\pi )\) . \(\square \)

We finish the section with a proof of Remark 1.4 . Let \(\tilde{K}_0^{MW}(R)\) be the ring quotient of \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) modulo the Steinberg relation (3) of Theorem 1.3 .

4 An example of \(GW(R)\ncong K_0^{MW}(R)\)

For any commutative local ring R , the three defining relations for \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) hold in GW ( R ); see the proof of Corollary 3.5 . In particular, the map ( 1.1 ) factors through the quotient \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) of \(\mathbb {Z}[R^*]\) and induces the ring homomorphism \(K^{MW}_0(R) \rightarrow GW(R)\) sending the generator \(\langle a \rangle \) of \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) to the Grothendieck-Witt class of the inner product space \(\langle a \rangle \) for \(a\in R^*\) . This ring homomorphism is surjective for any local ring R , by Proposition 3.1 . Thus, we obtain natural surjective ring homomorphisms

Proposition 4.1

For \(R = \mathbb {F}_2[x]/(x^4)\) , the natural surjection \(K_0^{MW}(R) \rightarrow GW(R)\) in ( 4.1 ) has kernel \(\mathbb {Z}/2\) . In fact, we have isomorphisms of abelian groups

Let \(I_{\mathbb {Z}}\subset \mathbb {Z}[{R^*/(R^*)^2}]\) , \(I_{MW}\subset K^{MW}_0(R)\) and \(I \subset GW(R)\) be the respective augmentation ideals, that is, the kernel of the surjective ring homomorphisms ( 4.1 ) from \(\mathbb {Z}[{R^*/(R^*)^2}]\) , \(K^{MW}_0(R)\) , GW ( R ) to \(\mathbb {Z}\) . The maps ( 4.1 ) induce surjections on augmentation ideals \(I_{\mathbb {Z}} \twoheadrightarrow I_{MW} \twoheadrightarrow I\) . The first part of the proposition is the statement that the surjection \({I_{MW}} \twoheadrightarrow I\) has kernel \(\mathbb {Z}/2\) .

For the local ring \(R = \mathbb {F}_2[x]/(x^4)\) , the group of units \(R^*\) has order 8 and elements \(1+ax+bx^2+cx^3\) , where \(a,b,c\in \mathbb {F}_2\) . The group homomorphism \(R^* \rightarrow R^*: a \mapsto a^2\) has image \(\{(1+ax+bx^2+cx^3)^2|\ a,b,c\in \mathbb {F}_2\} = \{1,1+x^2\}\) . In particular, the cokernel \({R^*/(R^*)^2}\) is a 2-torsion abelian group of order 4. Hence, the group \({R^*/(R^*)^2}\) is the Klein 4-group \(K_4{\cong (\mathbb {Z}/2)^2}\) . A set of coset representatives for \({R^*/(R^*)^2}\) is given by the elements 1, \(1+x\) , \(1+x+x^2\) , \(1+x^2+x^3 \in R^*\) since \((1+x)(1+x^2+x^3)=1+x +x^2 +2x^3+x^4 = 1+x+x^2\) is not a square. From the matrix equation in \(M_2(R)\)

Since \(I_{\mathbb {Z}}\) is additively generated by the elements \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle u\rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle \) for \(u\in R^*/(R^*)^2\) , we therefore have \(K_0^{MW}(R) = \mathbb {Z}[{R^*/(R^*)^2}]/2I_{\mathbb {Z}}\) and \(I_{MW} = I_{\mathbb {Z}}/2I_{\mathbb {Z}}\) . Now \(I_{\mathbb {Z}}/2I_{\mathbb {Z}}= (\mathbb {Z}/2)^3\) since \(I_{\mathbb {Z}}\) has \(\mathbb {Z}\) basis the elements \(\langle \hspace{-.5ex}\langle u \rangle \hspace{-.5ex}\rangle \) , \(1 \ne u \in {R^*/(R^*)^2\cong K_4}\) . Hence, the surjection \({I_{MW}} \twoheadrightarrow I\) , which is \((\mathbb {Z}/2)^3 \twoheadrightarrow (\mathbb {Z}/2)^2\) , has kernel \(\mathbb {Z}/2\) .

As abelian groups, we have \(GW(R)\cong \mathbb {Z}\oplus I\) and \(K_0^{MW}(R) \cong \mathbb {Z}\oplus {I_{MW}}\) . In particular, the computations above show that \(GW(R)\cong \mathbb {Z}\oplus (\mathbb {Z}/2)^2\) and \(K_0^{MW}(R) \cong \mathbb {Z}\oplus (\mathbb {Z}/2)^3\) . \(\square \)

Neuroblastoma in Adults: A Scoping Review of Presentations, Genetics and Therapies

Purpose As a scoping review, evaluate the literature on the presentations, genetics, and therapies for neuroblastoma in adult patients.

Methods We searched four databases for studies reporting adults with neuroblastoma. Cohort studies, case series, and case reports were synthesized qualitatively. Progression-free and overall survival were compared amongst cohort studies.

Results Of 2287 unique records, 136 studies published in 141 articles were included. A total of 679 patients were included. On review of individual patient-level data, the adrenal gland and retroperitoneum were the most common primary site (47.3%). MYCN was rarely amplified: seven studies reported zero patients with MYCN amplified, two studies with a single patient, and one study with 3/7 patients. Adult patients appear to show a high frequency of somatic mutations, specifically ALK (42%) and ATRX (58%). Registry data of included studies showed 5- year overall survival to be 36.3% in adults aged ≥20 years.

Conclusion Of nearly 700 cases of adult neuroblastoma published in the literature, the most common primary site is the adrenals or retroperitoneum. Relative to pediatric cases, adult cases demonstrate a considerable rate of somatic mutations such as ALK and ATRX . Registry data showed 5-year survival of 36%. Future studies evaluating targeted therapies in larger samples are needed.
