With various sections like international, national and city news, entertainment, science and technology, business and economy, sports and more, newspapers have something interesting for all. Children should develop the habit of reading the newspaper every day. One way to get children interested in reading newspapers is by asking them to share their views about newspapers through an essay writing exercise.

When students of classes 1, 2 and 3 write an essay about newspapers, they will need to include some facts about the print medium. Let us help your child write an essay in English for lower primary classes with some simple tips and sample essays.

Writing an essay on the importance of the newspapers is a common activity in primary school. Before your child begins writing an essay, it would help to take note of these key points to remember:

  • An essay has three parts – an introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Your introduction can comprise the definition of a newspaper and how so many people are dependent on reading newspapers to gain information about the world.
  • The body of your essay can cover information on the significance of newspapers. If you are a student in higher grades, you will be expected to write lengthier essays, for which you can split your body into two or three paragraphs and provide more information on the history of newspapers, the disadvantages of newspapers, and how a world without newspapers would be.
  • Conclude your essay by stating the importance of newspapers and how we can improve the quality of the content in newspapers.

When children write an essay for classes 1 and 2, we recommend that they start writing on the topic point-wise. Following are 10 lines on newspapers that will help your child write a short essay on the topic.

A short paragraph on the importance of newspapers should cover all the important information about newspapers to include some facts along with some views and opinions to make it a perfect read for little kids. Following is a short paragraph on the importance of newspapers:

A newspaper is quite an influential and powerful tool that provides information to all its readers. It is one of the primary means of mass communication through which people can sit in one place and know about the whole world. Moreover, newspapers are also an excellent source of knowledge. We receive our daily news with the help of newspapers early each morning. The newspaper is a reliable source that gives us information only after the truth of the matter has been thoroughly investigated. Newspapers are available everywhere and are the most economical sources of information.

As kids move up to higher grades, they will be required to write longer essays. Following is an example of a short essay on the importance of newspapers for kids.

A newspaper is a printed publication of news. Newspapers are brought to our doorsteps early each morning to keep us aware of the happenings across the world. Media houses with journalists publish newspapers that we read. The first newspaper in the world was published in Germany in 1906. Several stock market analysts and shareowners also read newspapers to evaluate their decisions for investments. Though the news is available on various digital devices these days, such as tablets, phones, and computers, newspapers still remain the favourite medium of news for most readers. In this age of the world coming closer, newspapers play an important role in increasing awareness about global events.

Once kids are in class 3, they need to write lengthier essays covering more information about the given topic. For this, they will need to research on the given topic in detail to be able to write a good essay. They can refer to this example for gathering points on the importance of newspapers:

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Importance of newspaper for students

Essay on the Importance of Reading Newspaper-1

Essay on Newspaper - Newspaper Reading In today's world all need to read newspapers. Life has become so complex in the modern society of accelerated change that one can hardly keep up with the advance of science commerce and, as a whole the society, without keeping oneself informed. And, undoubtedly, newspapers are the main source of information to the modern man.

There was a time when the reading of newspapers was regarded by many as a sign of up-to-dateness, importance, and fashion. Then very few people used to read newspapers. And those who used to read them were mainly educated, rich, or otherwise important persons of the society. But time has changed awfully. Nowadays almost everyone, rich and poor, high and low, highly educated and marginally literate, has to fall back upon newspapers for various types of essential information. Keep informed, or remain backwards—this is the command of the day. So, who will want to get lost in the dark cavern of ignorance? Today a man's success depends, to a great extent, on how well equipped he keeps himself with knowledge and information. For example, a businessman must know the business, economic, and market environment of every day to run his business properly. Information regarding the sources and prices of raw materials, availability of labor ad capitals or loans, prices of the products manufactured or marketed, weather condition etc must be known by the businessman for planning controlling and all types of decision-making. And such information, as we all know, comes to us mainly from newspapers. Politicians, like the businessmen, depend much on newspapers for information. Likewise, people of all professions and trades have to depend on newspapers for various types of information essential to them. Indeed, civilization would make no sense if we did not maintain it and keep it on the go upwards. But we must go ahead. 'A good kid': What we know about the Georgia shooting victims

Four people have been killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in the city of Winder, Georgia.

Officials have identified the deceased as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall.

The 14-year-old suspect was arrested and will be prosecuted as an adult.

Here is what we know so far about the victims of the attack.

Mason Schermerhorn

Mason Schermerhorn was one of two 14-year-olds who were killed. Friends of his mother told the New York Times that he had recently started at Apalachee.

He was described as light-hearted, and enjoyed reading, video games and visiting Walt Disney World.

Mason had an "upbeat attitude about everything", Doug Kilburn told the newspaper.

Another friend, Louis Briscoe, described the moment he heard of the boy's death from his mother, commenting: "Nobody should have to go through this type of pain."

Before he was killed, Mason had texted his mother during the shooting to say that he was safe and sheltering inside a restroom, a chaplain who works with his mother told Fox News.

US school shooting suspect, 14, quizzed about threats last year

Christian Angulo

Lisette Angulo identified herself as the elder sister of the shooting's other 14-year-old victim, Christian Angulo.

In a GoFundMe page aimed at raising money for the funeral, she said her brother was "a very good kid and very sweet and so caring". She went on to say the boy was "loved by many", describing her heartbreak at her loss.

Schoolmates remembered him as funny and with a "chill" attitude, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. One friend who said the two had been close since middle school said he was "in denial" after hearing about the deadly shooting.

Christina Irimie

Christina Irimie was one of two teachers killed in the shooting.

The 53-year-old is named on the Apalachee High School website as a maths teacher.

Students described her as patient and caring, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Ms Irimie was born in Romania and had come to the US more than two decades ago, a parish priest at a local Romanian Orthodox Church told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.

Nicolae Clempus said she was someone “you know you can count on” and was a talented dancer who taught traditional Romanian dance to children.

“She definitely had a gift to work with young people,” the priest said.

A GoFundMe launched to support her family says Ms Irimie "dedicated her life to shaping the minds and hearts of students and the community".

Richard Aspinwall

A second maths teacher, 39-year-old Richard Aspinwall, was also killed.

He was also the defensive coordinator for the school's American football team. The head coach praised him as "a great dad, man and a great father".

"He loved his two girls and he loved his wife," said coach Mike Hancock. "He did happen to love the game of football and he was well respected around this area."

He has also received tributes from his sporting peers.

Nearby Mountain View High School identified Mr Aspinwall as its former teacher and coach, saying its "thoughts and prayers" were with his family.

Brandon Gill, the football coach of nearby Buford High School, wrote on social media that Mr Aspinwall was a "helluva human being" who "would do anything for anyone." He was an "amazing husband, father, teacher and coach", he added.

A football game scheduled for this weekend has been postponed in the wake of the shooting.

People injured in the Georgia high school shooting

As well as the four people who were killed, eight students and a teacher were wounded.

The teacher was identified by his daughter as David Phenix . He has a role in curriculum assistance, according to the school's website.

His daughter said he underwent surgery after being shot in the hip, and that she felt "so, so lucky" he had survived.

Little has been revealed about the eight children who were injured.

Police say all those who were hurt in the attack are expected to recover.

Wednesday's violence at a Georgia high school and the arrest of a 14-year-old suspect follow a familiar pattern of previous school shootings. After every one, there's been a tendency to ask, "How do we prevent the next one?"

For years, school safety experts, and even the U.S. Secret Service, have rallied around some very clear answers. Here's what they say.

It's not a good idea to arm teachers

There's broad consensus that arming teachers is not  a good policy. That's according to Matthew Mayer, a professor at Rutgers Graduate School of Education. He's been studying school violence since before Columbine, and he's part of a group of researchers who have published several position papers about why school shootings happen.

Law enforcement and first responders respond to Apalachee High School in Winder, Ga., on Wednesday, after a shooting was reported.

Law enforcement had prior warning about suspect in fatal Georgia high school shooting

Mayer says arming teachers is a bad idea "because it invites numerous disasters and problems, and the chances of it actually helping are so minuscule."

In 2018, a Gallup poll  also found that most teachers do not want to carry guns in school, and overwhelmingly favor gun control measures over security steps meant to "harden" schools. When asked which specific measures would be "most effective" at preventing school shootings, 57% of teachers favored universal background checks, and the same number, 57%, also favored banning the sale of semiautomatic weapons such as the one used in the Parkland attack.

Raise age limits for gun ownership

School safety researchers support tightening age limits for gun ownership, from 18 to 21. They say 18 years old is too young to be able to buy a gun; the teenage brain is just too impulsive. And they point out that the school shooters in Parkland, Santa Fe, Newtown, Columbine and Uvalde were all under 21.

School safety researchers also support universal background checks and banning assault-style weapons . But it's not just about how shooters legally acquire firearms. A 2019 report  from the Secret Service found that in half the school shootings they studied, the gun used was either readily accessible at home or not meaningfully secured.

Of course, schools don't have control over age limits and gun storage. But there's a lot they can still do.

Schools can support the social and emotional needs of students

A lot of the conversation around making schools safer has centered on hardening schools by adding police officers and metal detectors. But experts say schools should actually focus on softening  to support the social and emotional needs of students .

"Our first preventative strategy should be to make sure kids are respected, that they feel connected and belong in schools," says Odis Johnson Jr., of Johns Hopkins University's Center for Safe and Healthy Schools.

That means building kids' skills around conflict resolution, stress management and empathy for their fellow classmates — skills that can help reduce all sorts of unwanted behaviors, including fighting and bullying.

In its report, the Secret Service found most of the school attackers they studied had been bullied.

The School Shootings That Weren't

The School Shootings That Weren't

Jackie Nowicki has led multiple school safety investigations at the U.S. Government Accountability Office. She and her team have identified some of things schools can do to make their classrooms and hallways feel safer, including "anti-bullying training for staff and teachers, adult supervision, things like hall monitors, and mechanisms to anonymously report hostile behaviors."

The Secret Service recommends schools implement what they call a threat assessment model, where trained staff — including an administrator, a school counselor or psychologist, as well as a law enforcement representative — work together to identify and support students in crisis before they hurt others.

Earlier this year, the National Association of Secondary School Principals released new guidance for preventing school violence.

It noted that ensuring that educators, parents and students have access to mental health services is a "critical component" in preventing violence and increasing school safety. And the organization called for congressional action to provide support for those services.

Shakira settled $15m spanish tax case to ‘protect’ her kids, accuses authorities of ‘burning [her] at the stake’.

Shakira only struck a deal with the Spanish government in  her November 2023 tax fraud trial in Barcelona to “protect” her kids.

“I want to leave my children the legacy of a woman who explained her reasons calmly and in her own time, when she considered it necessary, not when she was forced to,” the “Waka Waka” hitmaker wrote in a letter published in the Spanish newspaper, el Mundo, on Thursday.

“I need them to know that I made the decisions I made to protect them, to be by their side and to get on with my life. Not out of cowardice or guilt.”

On the first day of her trial, Shakira, 47, avoided the risk of going to prison by agreeing to cough up $7.6 million to the Spanish government for allegedly skipping out on $15.8 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

She maintained her innocence  for nearly five years beforehand.

In her essay for el Mundo, Shakira wrote that the “state institution seemed more interested in publicly burning [her] at the stake than in listening to [her] reasons.”

She also accused the government of crafting a story to make it look like she defrauded it of millions after formally relocating to Spain.

“In 2011, I wanted my relationship with Gerard Piqué to prosper, who at that time was tied to Spain for work reasons,” she recalled.

Piqué played professional soccer for FC Barcelona between 2008 and his retirement in 2022. The pair dated between 2011 and 2022 and share two sons: Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9 .

Shakira continued, “Traveling to Spain created many complications for me because it forced me to be away from my work centers. Whenever I returned, I did so to make the relationship prosper, not because of a ‘vocation to stay.'”

She also said that in 2011, she spent 73 days in Spain. The minimum amount of days to be considered a tax resident is 183, as declared by the Spanish government.

She alleged when she officially moved to Spain in 2015, the tax office tried to charge her for a decade’s worth of taxes.

The Grammy winner added that she “always fulfilled” her tax obligations and was even cleared when the IRS investigated her.

She also claimed she paid “much more” than she should have because she agreed to several “unjustified” fines.

Wrapping up her essay, Shakira penned, “No one can write my story for me. Just like with my songs, I sing to live peacefully again, to turn the page.”

She shared a similar sentiment when she originally reached the November 2023 deal with Spain.

“I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight,” she said in a statement at the time.

Shakira with her sons Milan and Sasha

“I need to move past the stress and emotional toll of the last several years and focus on the things I love, my kids and all the opportunities to come in my career.”

In 2023, Shakira left Spain and moved to Miami following her and Piqué’s separation. In a lengthy social media post, she asked for privacy for the sake of her sons.

“I extend this petition no longer as an artist, but as a mother who wants to protect and care for the psychological and emotional well-being of her children so that they can live a healthy and happy life, as every child deserves,” she explained.

Shakira Settled $15 Million Tax Fraud Case ‘To Protect My Children,’ Not Out of ‘Cowardice or Guilt’

Shakira Says She Settled $15M Spanish Tax Case to 'Protect' Her Children, Not Because She Was Guilty

Shakira decided to settle her $15 million tax fraud case for her two sons’ sake.

“I did it to protect my children and to get on with my life, not out of cowardice or guilt,” Shakira, 47, wrote in an essay published in Spanish newspaper El Mundo on Thursday, September 5.

The Colombian singer was accused of defrauding the Spanish government of more than $15 million in taxes from 2012 to 2014. The prosecutors alleged that Shakira claimed to live in the Bahamas while actually residing in Catalonia, Spain. (At this time, Shakira’s then-partner, Gerard Piqué , played pro soccer in the European country.)

Shakira — who shares sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, with Piqué, 37 — fervently and continually denied the allegations. (News broke in July 2023 that prosecutors were pursuing a trial against Shakira, but she settled the case before going to court.)

“The reality was very different: I always fulfilled my obligations. My finances were investigated by institutions as little suspicious as the White House or the IRS and approved by other countries of the European Union,” Shakira wrote. “In all that time, they never found even the slightest sign of illegality, while a general director of inspection of the Spanish Tax Agency allowed himself to criminalize me in a television program even before the trial was held. She continued, “They wanted to make the public believe that I did not pay my taxes when the truth is that I paid much more than I should have. When I really had to do so, I declared myself a Spanish tax resident and if you add up all the amounts I paid voluntarily and the unjustified fines, you will see that the Spanish State kept a sum greater than my total earnings from those years.”

Shakira and Piqué eventually ended their decade-long relationship in June 2022 before the “Hips Don’t Lie” musician relocated to the United States with their kids. Piqué, meanwhile, still lives in Spain but has retired from pro soccer.

Children held over fatal attack on dog walker, 80

newspaper essay for kid

Five children have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of an 80-year-old man who was attacked in a park.

Bhim Kohli died in hospital after being assaulted while walking his dog at Franklin Park, in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, on Sunday evening.

Leicestershire Police said a boy and a girl, both aged 14, and another boy and two girls aged 12, were in custody.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

People in the area have spoken of their disbelief and sadness about what happened in the park, which is next to a primary school.

On Tuesday it was busy with police vehicles, camera crews and reporters.

Later, some people arrived carrying flowers to leave as a tribute to Mr Kohli.

A neighbour of the victim, Deep Singh Kaila, 70, described the incident as "shocking".

He added: "He was a very nice guy. He was always there, working in the allotment. Everyone knows him."

Nick Brown, leader of Braunstone Town Council, said: "Everyone's shocked by these events. It's stunned the community.

"We're trying to pull together to listen to what people have got to say and support the family and friends.

"It's a close-knit community."

Police said the victim had been near the park's Bramble Way entrance at about 18:30 BST when he was seriously assaulted by a group of young people who left the scene before emergency services arrived.

Five children were detained following inquiries, the force said.

Due to prior police contact with the victim, the force will be making a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), it added.

Detectives have been speaking to residents in the area and have appealed for anyone who was in the park on Sunday evening to come forward.

Nearby residents expressed their shock at hearing the news.

Julie March, 38, said: "It's tragic; we can't even comprehend how it happened.

"And it's just on our doorstep."

Emma Ghent, 34, said: "From what we have heard, he lives so close to us, so it is literally on our doorstep.

"He walks his dog every day in the park, and we have a dog; my husband walks the dog in the park.

"It could have been him; he could have been there at the same time.

"It's just horrible."

Det Insp Emma Matts said officers were trying to establish the details of the attack.

"A scene preservation will remain in place at the park while our investigation progresses," she said.

"Local officers are also in the area carrying out reassurance patrols and can speak to anyone in the local community who has concerns."

Officers have said they are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw the victim before the assault or a group of young people leaving the area.
