Beautiful Pokhara

Every time I visit Pokhara I am stunned by its sheer beauty and pristine charm. Pokhara is my homeland where I spent most of my childhood. I graduated from high school in this picturesque place. Whenever I am living away from my hometown, I am nostalgic for its beautiful view, fresh air and friendly faces. Pokhara is a metropolitan city in the Western region of Nepal. It is a valley cradled amongst mountains and hills with meandering rivers. It is a major tourist destination due to its panoramic views. Once you enter the vicinity of this city, you are greeted with magnificent views of the mountains. The Dhaulagiri range and Annapurna range tower majestically over the green valley. For someone who has been living in Kathmandu for years, the greenery of this city always takes me by surprise.

Pokhara is the city of lakes. There are several lakes in Pokhara and the prominent ones are Fewa Lake, Rupa Lake and Begnas Lake. Among these lakes, Fewa Lake is by far the most beautiful lake. Nestled on a little island on Fewa Lake is the Barahi Temple. For a small charge, you can go on a boat ride on this lake. The sunlight reflects on the lake and glitters and the mountains smile upon us in the reflection.

You can walk on the Lakeside enjoying the sight which is an incredible experience. I regret the fact that when I was a resident here in Pokhara I overlooked its charms. Lakeside is even prettier in the late evenings, under the soft glow of lamp posts hung upon the creatively built restaurants and shops. You can dine here while enjoying the live entertainments. Other attractions of Pokhara are Davis’ Fall which is a beautiful waterfall and Buddha Stupa. Then there is Sarangkot which is a towering hill that offers a magnificent view of Pokhara from its hill top.

Motherland holds a special place in our heart because it is the place where we grew up. Childhood is a golden period of time where we create long lasting memories and find our feet. We struggle with juggling school, home and budding teenage years in our motherland. My memories are highlighted with the love and affection with beautiful Pokhara. I remember times spent with my family and relatives in my maternal home in Pokhara. I remember the years throughout the seasons in this city. All the childhood years are connected to the memory of growing up in this beatific city. I may part with this beautiful city, but it will always hold a place in my heart.

Among the most beautiful city in Nepal, Pokhara is one of them situated in 200 km west of the capital city Katmandu located in the Gandaki Zone of Western Development Region. It is the second largest city after Kathmandu with an area of the 464.24-kilometer square. It was an entrance for trading between Tibet and India until the ending of the 1960s. An architectural review of location: Pokhara, Nepal

Pokhara metropolitan city sits on the Shore of Phewa Lake and is located within the small valley surrounded by tall green hills of the Mahabharata Range. The city has a humid subtropical climate, but since it is high up in the elevation, it has moderate temperatures with very rainy summers.

Facing the mountains like Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna eye to eye, Pokhara boasts its richness in natural resources, cultural significance, and about 2 million yearly visitors. Its humid streets are always packed with tourists and they feel like a never-ending festival, and the stone-cladded structures reflect the views of the rocky hills, setting a cohesive tone with the geography of the hills of Nepal and everything that attracts tourists to Pokhara. The aura of the city is very home-like, with structures not taller than 5-6 stories; and greenery and lively streets.

History of settlement

During the time of the unifier Prithvi Narayan Shah (1700s), Pokhara was an important trading place on the routes from Kathmandu to Jumla and from India to Tibet. Pokhara then naturally developed into a bigger settlement with people from surrounding hills migrating to the place for opportunities. With this migration , the settlement also welcomed different architectural styles of different castes following different religions from different areas of the hills of Nepal. With it, the city gradually changed from an agriculture and trade centric to tourism centric city. The Brahmins from hills and Gurungs and Magars from mountainous regions, Newars from Kathmandu Valley, make up the majority of the population, and influences of the architecture of the regions can be still seen in today’s architecture.

The evolution of the city’s architecture to the present

With the evolution of the city, traditional vernacular styles got replaced by the R.C.C. structures, but what stayed throughout the years in the architectural scene of Pokhara is the use of stone in buildings as a component for masonry or as cladding. The abundance of sources of building stones in the banks of different rivers that cross the valley has resulted in it being the major material to be highlighted in the architecture of the Pokhara Valley. Mountain architecture also has some influence over the preference for stone as a building material in the valley. It gives a unique feel to the city. The stone masonry set a grounded nature to the buildings and in totality to the city. The buildings usually don’t go higher than 5-6 stories so the streets become the main domain of interaction, because all the eyes are on the street.

Architectural landmarks

The architectural landmarks of Pokhara are mostly its religious sites with include Hindu temples tiered temples, and Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas.  As mentioned earlier, people from different areas migrated to Pokhara and brought their unique culture, and religion, thus built their places of worship. Pokhara welcomes thousands of pilgrims each year. Tal Barahi temple sits amidst the Phewa Lake and is a tiered Nepali Hindu temple and Binda Basini temple, the oldest temple of Pokhara, overlooking the beautiful Annapurna range host many visitors. Likewise, the Peace Pagoda, which is located on the nearby hill also is an important religious destination for the buddhists. Similar to these landmarks, there are many disparate temples, pagodas, and Gumbas in the valley that can be considered architectural gems.

 The recently built Pokhara International Airport is also turning into an architectural landmark and its symmetrical façade and one-of-a-kind design sets its image quite apart. The landmarks not only bring in the followers to the city but they certainly add to the exhilaration and give the city another dimension.

Tourism architecture

Hotel architecture seems to have gained momentum in recent decades. Different hotels and resorts are built overlooking the lakes and the mountains capitalizing on the scenic views of the valley. Adhering to the use of stone architecture, most of the resorts and retreats are adding to the architectural image of the city. Mostly the tourist-related activities are centered on the famously known area “the lakeside” where visitors partake in shopping for their trekking gear in the roadside shops, dine in several aesthetic restaurants, or just admire the view of the lake and the mountains. 

In conclusion, the architecture of the valley has evolved throughout history with the change in the economic prospects of the city. But what has stayed throughout time is the underlying culture, religion, and values that give depth to the overall architectural experience of the city. Through the stones in the houses mimicking the mountains, it establishes itself as the city of natural beauty and the view of the incandescent snowcapped mountains. The form of the buildings also can be seen to be derived from the mountains. Therefore, the architecture of Pokhara Valley is grounded in its geography and scenic reference, and this adds to the “Naturally beautiful and the haven for tourists” image of the city.

A short trip to Pokhara with my gang

After picking up all of us from various localities, we finally left the capital at around 8 in the morning. On our way to Pokhara , we stopped over at River Side Spring Resort for lunch, which is a decent destination, some 3 hours from the capital, where people visit there for a refreshing break, rafting, etc. In about 3 more hours’ drive and just when we had reached Pokhara, we were welcomed by a mesmeric breath-taking glance of the Himalayas. It was not my first view of the Himalayas but this was something special, as the evening drizzle had given an amazing look. Leave alone my foreign friends, even I was awed and dazzled by it. We reached our Hotel in the evening at around 5, which was on the way to the top of the hill (Sarangkot). Later in the evening, we went down to the Lakeside area for dinner, where we had the group’s favourite Chinese Hotpot. We ended the night early since we had planned to go to the top of the hill the next morning for Sunrise view. After waking up quite early, we reached the top of the Sarangkot Hill (View Top) just in time for the sunrise. The sunrise view didn’t last long due to a bit of cloudy weather, nevertheless, the view of the Annapurna range and fishtail from close was breath-taking. An hour or so later after enjoying the views and taking lots of snaps, we returned back to our hotel to rest for a while, followed by breakfast. The kids in the group enjoyed playing in the garden, whereas, we adults had sunbath with the IMAX view of Annapurna range, which was excellent from the hotel.

We then headed to the paragliding spot, from where most of our friends had a tremendous thrill in the sky, viewing the city, Fewa Lake, Hills and the Himalayas from the top.One of our friend’s 3-year-old daughter was also one of the paragliders (together with her mother) and that was an attraction point for all the people there. After that, we drove down where the paragliders were to land and then headed to the Lakeside area again for Nepali cuisines. Now, it was the turn of visiting other touristic spots: Davis Fall and then to Gupteshwor Cave. Davis fall was pretty dry, as the place looks completely different and amazing during monsoon season. The cave, on the other hand, was pretty good, as it was my first visit to the place and also due to the fact that it was any cave trip for me after more than two decades. Whereas the morning time was for the sunrise view from Sarangkot hill, we dedicated our evening to view the sunset from another hill, where World Peace Pagoda is located. Just like in the morning, we had to walk around 15 minutes up the hill from the vehicle parking area. Both the walking journeys were of worth though, as the views of sunrise and sunset, along with other sights were wonderful. Lakeside area and the long walking street is such a delight in Pokhara that we again decided to go there. This time though, we walked along the street for some shopping (mainly for our visiting friends) and finally to a Vietnamese restaurant. Since, it was not much of a drinking, clubbing group, we were back to our hotel quite early yet again.

Next morning, after yet another sunbath with the view and breakfast, we headed to the Lakeside, before making a short stopover at Bindabasini Temple. We visited yet another temple (Barahai Temple), which was hardly 15/20 minutes boating from the shore, which is situated in a very small island. Finally, we boated back to our vehicle and drove back to Kathmandu, making a lunch stopover in Mugling. The other interesting part on my side of this trip is that I can now guide anyone visiting most of the tourist destination places in Pokhara to let them know about all the toilet whereabouts, as I had a terrible stomach problem from the very second day of the trip. The trip was still a wonderful one. At least, now I am also well informed about all the nature call locations.

The bat does not like brightness, so no light is present inside the bat cave, unlike Mahendra cave.

After you buy an entry ticket, you have to walk for a few minutes down to the cave. You have to carry a torch with low brightness with you to use it inside the cave. The cave is steep, so be careful when you are walking.

The exit tunnel of the bat cave is even narrower than the Mahendra cave. It is difficult to climb to the exit, so it is quite adventurous.

People think it is extremely expensive but it is not. You don’t need to do everything and can still enjoy the beauty. But don’t forget to taste the cuisine and take boat ride and bungee and…….. sorry, but still you can enjoy in limited budget.
