Can I Copy Your Homework

Quick links : Meaning | Origin | Spread & Usage

What does Can I Copy Your Homework mean?

Can I copy your homework is a series of internet jokes and memes based on the idea of comparing two seemingly almost identical elements of pop-culture.

These memes often appear in a Twitter post format, showing a pretend-dialogue between two parties.

After the first one asks if they can copy the other’s homework (homework refers to whatever the pop culture element is), the reply usually is the following: “Sure, but don’t make it look too obvious”.

The images usually show two similar characters or items next to each other.

This dialogue-format was inspired by the common occurrence in high-school life, where students often copy each other’s homework and then get caught by teachers for making it too obvious.

Fact check: 'Homework' spelled backwards does not translate to 'child abuse' in Latin

meaning of homework meme

The claim: 'Homework' spelled backward means 'child abuse' in Latin

Many words and phrases are known to have different meanings in other languages, and much of the English vocabulary is derived from Latin roots.

Some social media users are claiming that the word "homework" spelled backward has a meaning in the Latin language.

A  Feb. 27 Instagram post  with almost 18,000 likes features a screenshot of the Google search, "what is homework backwards." The result purportedly reads, "So basically 'Homework' spelled backwards is 'krowemoh' which in Latin translates to child abuse."

The same screenshot included in the Instagram meme also appears in several viral TikToks, and the hashtag #Krowemoh has more than  246,000 views on the platform .

The Google search screenshot that users have used to make the claim is taken from a March 7, 2013, viral post  that has recently resurfaced on Twitter, where many users have  shared similar versions of the claim.

"I knew that this homework was just a way to abuse children," one Twitter user wrote along with the claim on Jan. 24.

What is Homework spelled backwards? Krowemoh meaning debunked as TikTok claim goes viral

follow icon

Recently, a number of TikTok users have turned to the platform to claim that the word "Krowemoh," which is Latin for "child abuse," is homework spelled backwards.

The claim has been making the rounds on the internet since March 2013. A now-deleted Reddit thread resurfaced the claims in January 2021. Furthermore, In February 2021, a screenshot taken by Spicy Memer was published on Instagram by Chillstonks Memes. It had a picture from a Google search asking "what is homework backwards."

The first result was:

"So, basically, 'homework' spelled backwards is 'krowemoh' which in Latin, translates to 'child abuse.'"

However, contrary to this popular claim, "krowemoh" does not translate to "child abuse" in Latin. "Krowemoh" isn't an actual word, either in Latin or any other language .

"Krowemoh" is just "homework" spelled backwards. The compound word "homework" explains itself. It refers to the work that children are expected to complete outside of school, if not at home.

Contrary to the viral TikTok claims, Homework spelled backwards does not mean child abuse

Another viral claim has emerged via TikTok users (Representative image via Getty)

An Instagram account shared a screenshot of a Google search result asking the meaning of homework spelled backwards in February 2021. It started after the viral TikTok claim was made . However, the most prominent result was that "krowemoh," which means "child abuse" in Latin.

Additionally, users will see a warning when they access the Instagram post. The image is blurry in the back, but the social media site has labeled the post as "false information." In fact, contrary to the popular TikTok claim, "krowemoh" wouldn't even exist as a word in Latin, as several users had stated. Reurters stated in a March 8, 2021 article that some claim that "Oh" isn't even a Latin suffix. Some users even joked about how the actual child abuse is the schoolwork itself.

Moreover, the same has been asserted by other social media users. Nochillrick, an Instagram user, shared the identical image and has already gotten 11K likes. Similar claims have been made by other users of Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. However, the majority of these posts have already been removed.

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that the term "Krowemoh" does not actually exist and the claim is false. There were no pertinent results for "krowemoh" when searching Logeion, an open-database created at the University of Chicago that aggregates several Latin and Greek dictionaries.

Furthermore, a Snopes article from January 31, 2021 reported that the Latin language does not even contain the word "krowemoh." The character "W" did not exist in Latin, whose alphabet included 23 characters.

It further stated that the 26-letter alphabet was not created until the Middle Ages, when the letter "v," which had previously been a component of the Latin alphabet, was divided into the letters "u," "v," and "w," and the letter "j" was added.

Furthermore, the same Snopes article claimed that the character "w" did not become widely used until the 1500s, long after people who spoke Latin were inventing new words for that language. It went on to say that "krowemoh" is not a term in Latin or any other language that they are aware of, and it most definitely does not indicate "child abuse."

On the other hand, Reuters reported that some X users provided an additional alleged meaning for "krowemoh" when they searched for the term "Latin." The same source reported that the user also purportedly defined the terms "geometry," "school," and "private account" for words in the English language that were tweeted backward.

Reuters also disclosed that a screenshot of the article for "krowemoh" on the crowdsourcing website Urban Dictionary was also provided by the same X user. However, the MIT Technology Review stated in a 2018 article that because the website lacks style rules, editors, or moderators, its information can be "vague and inaccurate" and contain viewpoints.

The viral claim of TikTok has now been debunked.

Does 'Homework' Spelled Backwards Mean 'Child Abuse' in Latin?

Thousands of languages have existed throughout the history of humanity. there is no evidence the word "krowemoh" ever belonged to any of them., alex kasprak, published jan. 31, 2021.

False

About this rating

The claim that the word "homework" spelled backwards translates to "child abuse" in Latin has been a feature of the internet since at least March 2013 . In January 2021, a Reddit thread brought the assertion renewed interest .

The claim is false. The word "krowemoh" does not exist in the Latin language. In fact, not even the character "W" existed in Latin, whose alphabet contained 23 characters . Latin, the language of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church, had largely died out by the 6th century AD — replaced by regional dialects that would ultimately become the Romance languages of Europe.

A form of the character W was first used around the 7th century AD, because the Latin alphabet did not have a character to represent the sound /w/ spoken in Germanic and old English languages. As a solution, writers began using "uu" (or "vv" as u and v referred to the same character in the classical Latin alphabet) to represent the sound /w/. The character we now know as "W" did not see widespread use until the 1500s , well after Latin-speaking humans were creating new words in that language.

All of this is to say that "krowemoh" is not a word and it certainly does not mean "child abuse" in Latin or any other language we are aware of.

Microsoft Phone Link With Android Is Better Than You Think: 9 Hidden Tricks

After using macos sequoia and apple intelligence in beta, here's what i think so far, yes, you can convert pdf to excel—without third-party software.

You've surely seen the word meme in your travels around the internet. But if you're not well-versed in internet culture, it can be difficult to find a clear explanation of what exactly a meme is.

We're here to help. Let's go over the definition of memes, explore their usage, and look at some examples of both classic memes and those that are popular right now.

What Is a Meme?

You might be surprised to know that the word meme didn't originate online. In fact, author Richard Dawkins first used the word in his 1976 work The Selfish Gene. The book looked at evolution and used meme to describe an idea or behavior that spreads across people in a culture.

When someone says meme nowadays, they're probably referring to an internet meme . This is the common usage we'll discuss here and builds on Dawkins's use of the term.

For a basic meme definition, we'll use the following:

A piece of media, often humorous, that spreads rapidly through the internet.

With the instant communication that services like Twitter, Reddit, and similar allow us to perform online, it's no wonder that memes spread so quickly.

Often, memes go through small alterations like the game of telephone. Sometimes, memes even beget new memes. What's fascinating is that the nature of online memes means we can trace their origins, evolution, and changes in popularity.

Now that we have a simple meme definition, we'll look at some meme examples to help you better understand how memes originate and spread.

Meme vs. Image Macro

Before we continue, we should address a common wording mistake. Many people use the word meme to refer to any image that has text overlaid on it.

For example, here's a random image of a guy using a computer with some text I added:

MakeUseOf Computer Guy Image Macro

The proper term for this is an image macro ; this is not a meme. Why not? Because this hasn't spread across the internet. It's just a silly image I made. If you posted this on Reddit, nobody would recognize the format.

Some image macros are memes, but not all memes are image macros (as we'll discuss below). And someone creating an image macro and sharing it doesn't make it a meme.

Historical Meme Examples

Let's walk through some famous memes from years past.

LOLcat Meme

This classic meme plays on the internet's love of cats. Its format is simple: one or more cats, usually in some adorable situation, with overlaid text. The wording is intentionally poor English that now has its own name: lolspeak.

2. Condescending Wonka

Condescending Wonka Meme

Here's one of many examples of the Advice Animals subgenre of image macros. Advice Animals refers to an image macro template that revolves around some character trait of the animal (or person) in the image.

In this case, Condescending Wonka is exactly as it sounds. It's an image of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, taken from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The meme features patronizing statements from Wonka.

3. Gangnam Style

Gangnam Style is one of the internet's best-known viral videos. It released in July 2012 and quickly spread like wildfire, racking up more than nine million views per day for two months during the height of its popularity. Everyone from mainstream news outlets to celebrities was talking about it before long.

Thousands of people created reaction videos, parodies, and more. It was the first YouTube video to hit both one billion and two billion views. In fact, it had so many views that it surpassed the memory YouTube had for its view counter at the time. And it's still one of YouTube's most-watched videos .

Gangnam Style is an unforgettable phenomenon that perfectly illustrates how quickly something can spread through the internet.

4. Chuck Norris Facts

Chuck Norris Fact Meme

Chuck Norris has been a martial artist, actor, film director, and more in his life. But online, he's not primarily known for any of that. Instead, he's become famous for "Chuck Norris Facts," a meme that chronicles absurd feats of Norris.

These facts exaggerate his toughness, claiming impossibilities such as his ability to win a game of Connect Four in three moves. Norris has stated that he finds the facts funny, and has no doubt enjoyed renewed fame from the meme.

5. Do a Barrel Roll

This is a quote from the 1997 space shooter game Star Fox 64 that has enjoyed a long life on the internet. In the game, your wingmate Peppy advises you to do a barrel roll to avoid enemy fire.

Due to the game's cheesy voice acting, this became an oft-repeated phrase online. It's just one of many gaming memes that made it into the mainstream. In fact, try searching for do a barrel roll on Google and see what happens.

Recent Examples of Memes

In internet time, the above memes are ancient history. Here are some of the most popular memes from the past few years.

6. Gonna Tell My Kids

This endlessly customizable meme became popular on Twitter. In it, you state that you plan to tell your kids about a famous person or group of people. However, instead of a picture of the actual entity in question, the tweet contains a photo of a different person or group that shares some characteristics with it.

There's a lot of potential here for comedic contrast. The idea that someone would tell their kids a blatant lie about pop culture icons because they wouldn't know any better is definitely good for a few laughs.

7. Woman Yelling at a Cat

Woman Yelling at Cat Meme

One of the most popular memes of 2019 is a combination of two separate images. The left part shows a screencap of an upset woman from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, while the right shows a confused-looking cat sitting in front of a plate of vegetables.

As meme pair, both images usually receive a label. The general theme is that the woman is upset about something for which the cat feels indignant about or has no control over.

8. Ight Imma Head Out

Imma Head Out Meme

This simple meme is based on a shot from the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. The image shows SpongeBob getting out of a chair with a dismayed look on his face. Paired with its caption of "Ight Imma Head Out," this meme lets you express your desire to leave a scenario.

If you want to get more creative with it, you can edit SpongeBob into different situations than his chair at home.

9. Which Is the Best Seat?

Our next meme is a good example of a phrase that starts out as an innocent question before being parodied into oblivion. It originated when a Twitter user posted a picture asking people which labeled seat on a New York City subway was the best.

Before long, people started asking which seat was best in ridiculous scenarios, such as on board a spacecraft or in Congress. But if you ever wondered, now you can spark a debate on seating in all sorts of situations.

10. Me and the Boys

Me and the Boys Meme

This repeatable phrase meme evolved a bit over time. It started out as a caption you would place on seemingly random pictures of people involved in a strange activity.

Over time, the next popular rendition combined the phrase with a group of villains from the Spider-Man cartoon from the '60s. The show is known for is unintentionally hilarious animation, so the meme combines the cheesy looks on the villains' faces with captions about juvenile behavior.

We've taken a tour of five classic and five modern memes, but this is only a tiny sampling. Memes are constantly emerging and dying off---what's insanely popular today is stale next week.
