Canvas Rearranges Design Elements when Uploading

If you are a college student and you create a PPT on Mac and you save and then upload itt as an assignment on Canvas, a lot tof tthe design elements get moved around and it makes a mess of the presentaion. pics and texts boxes are no longer where you placed hem, so your design looks bad. What I have to do no is export the presentation to a PDF an dupload that as the assignment, and then email the instructor to tell them that Canvas is wrecking my presentaion so I sent a pdf instead. My college moved from Moodle to Canvas last year and I have had this trouble ever since. When the PPT presentation is saved as a PDF, you lose all the extras you added like voice narration and sound effects, music, notes, etc.

You're getting better but the product still has many frustrating parts. For instance the open folder is now gone on this version and on other versions I use with different customers, it's there and useful. The library of icons and art that you can use is also lacking. Why don't you allow all the types of icons that Visio uses? It would make it usable. Also, the section part is great but it's clumbsy and when you open you always have to collapse. Why can't you select a flag that lets you open collapsed. that would make the tool much more usable. Integration with teams is still terrible and with email if the product is open, you can't send the file. Why? just version it and send. Theres' much more but it's useful but not a product that has the power of things like Lucid, or visio, but it could be much more usable, so you get a three for teasing me with function and ideas, then falling short when I try to use it my way as the main unit. It's keeping this type of work, design and developent documentation, a dark art...who knows maybe AI might help you.

Printing Slides is a Joke

To my knowledge, this is mainly an issue with PowerPoint for Mac as my colleagues who use PCs don't have this issue. When you go to print the slides, they look fine if there are multiple on a page or if you print the notes version, but if you try to print 1 slide per page the images blur when printing! And not just a little fuzzy, they turn out with lines going through them and just look like they never completed loading. This also happens when exporting to a PDF. The PDF looks fine on the screen, and then as soon as you go to print it, a random image will blur out like that. Is it the same image everytime? NOPE! It picks and chooses which image it wants to blur out each time it prints. There is no rhyme or reason to this issue. I exported to PDF, Exported each slide to jpeg, even took screen shots as a last resort and had to just deal with the fact that the color was completely different on the printed screen shot slides. This has been an issue for MONTHS and is all over every forum - the fact that this hasn't been addressed by the MS team is unacceptable! If I'm printing client copies of proposal presentations it shouldn't take me all day due to troubleshooting!

Powerpoint and Macbooks: How to use mirrored Presenter View in a 3 screen setup

Using Powerpoint Presenter View for speakers on Corporate Events

When a presenter shows their Powerpoint-presentation from a stage or a studio, they usually want to see the presenter-view while they are talking. Here they can see their slides and presenter-notes.

In corporate events, there are two ways to play the presentation. For smaller events, the presenter can bring their own laptop to the stage and use this to play the presentation. By plugging the laptop straight to the projector, the presenter can see the presenter-view on the internal display, and the actual presentation is shown on the external display.

But for bigger events, the A/V team wants more control of the presentation-computer, so the presentation needs to be played from a computer placed at the Front of House. From there it can feed the projector, the streaming-device, and send the presenter-view to a separate monitor on the stage.

In order to display Presenter View on a separate display using laptops, you normally want to mirror your internal display with the stage monitor. Then both monitors will show the presenter view, and the external display will show the full presentation.

With Macs you can set up the screen-configuration from the Displays settings in System Preferences. (Example below is from Mac OS Ventura)

When you go to “arrange”, the stacked images shows which screens are mirrored.

In Powerpoint, make sure that presenter-view is enabled from the settings. Go to Slide Show from the preferences in the top menu bar.

Go to “Set up slide show” from the Slide Show tab above the edit-window. Select Monitor 2 or Auto as the Slide Show monitor.

You would assume that this would be enough to ensure that the presenter-screen is mirrored and the presentation shown on the external display. But, to our surprise, when we play the presentation, the presenter-view is no longer mirrored on the stage-monitor. Instead, only the desktop is shown:

In PC this works seamlessly. So why doesn’t it work in Mac? And can we solve it? Yes! After years of grey hair and frustration, I think I have finally found a way around this issue:

How to solve the problem – what works for me

Identify what Powerpoint means by Monitor 2

First you must stop all mirroring on your MacBook. Have your internal display set up as the Main display, and the two connected displays as extended. You will then have 3 separate displays in the display settings

Now go to Powerpoint. In the Slide Show settings, go to Set up slide show. Set the Monitor to Monitor 2, or Automatic. (same as earlier before)

Then play the presentation, and take note of what is the screen where the presentation is displayed. In this example, Monitor 2 from Powerpoint is the stage monitor. This won’t work. (see next step)

2. Make sure that Monitor 2 in Powerpoint is routed to the display where you want to show the presentation

From step 1: If Monitor 2 is the display used to show the presentation to the audience, then you can proceed to step 3. If Monitor 2 is the stage-monitor that you want for presenter-view, then you need to swap the routing of two hdmi-outputs from your Macbook . If you send the hdmi-cables through a hardware switcher, then you can do this internally in the switcher. This would be my preferred way of action as it doesn’t involve any physical unplugging and patching. Also, the Macbook wouldn’t be aware of these changes, so you won’t change any internal mac-settings.

3. Turn on Mirrored screen

Now you can turn the mirror back on, with the stage monitor mirroring the internal display on the mac

We have identified that DAC70 is the stage-monitor, and we set that as mirrored display.

4. Check that the Monitor in Powerpoint is set to Automatic or Monitor 2

Now you are good to go: If you play the presentation, you will get the configuration with presenter view on the stage-monitor

Hurra, it finally works!

To reach the conlusions above, I have tested with these Macs: – 15″ Macbook Pro 2015 – 14″ Macbook Pro 2021 – 15″ MacBook Pro 2018. OS: Monterey. Powerpoint-version: 16

Using this method with APS

Auto Presentation Switcher , gives you more ways to open, display and switch presentations. When opening presentations on Mac with APS, the monitor where the presentation is shown is taken from the Powerpoint settings. So you don’t need any additional preparation to use this method with APS.

Update 5. October 2022:

Since I wrote this text I have used the 3-screen Powerpoint Mac setup on several events. It hasn’t failed me so far. I feel more confident now than before that this article describes how you can use the 3 screen setup with Powerpoint for Mac. However, there is no guarantee that this solution will work for every Mac that has 3 screen outputs. It would be very interesting if more people could test this method, and share how it works for them.

1. With Hotkeys

One of the simplest and most direct methods to record a video on your Mac is by using hotkeys. These Mac keyboard shortcuts are not only quick but also eliminate the need for any external software.

Here’s how you can use hotkeys for video recording on Mac:

This method works on macOS Mojave or later.

Press Command ⌘ + Shift ⇧ + 5 to bring up the screenshot toolbar.

This toolbar offers options for recording the entire screen or a selected portion.
Click Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion and select the portion of the screen you’d like to record.

Click the Stop button in the menu bar when you want to stop recording.

To save the recording, right-click the recorded file in the bottom right corner of your screen and select Save to Desktop or Save to Documents .

2. Using Photo Booth

The latest version of OpenAI's generative AI software, ChatGPT 4o, was released on Monday and is now available for all users.

GPT-4o — the "o" stands for "omni" — is ChatGPT's current flagship iteration, improving the speed and capabilities of the previous GPT-4 model.

OpenAI claims GPT-4o is "much better than any existing model at understanding and discussing the images you share.

"For example, you can now take a picture of a menu in a different language and talk to GPT-4o to translate it, learn about the food's history and significance, and get recommendations," the company writes in an introductory blog post .

These innovations will make GPT-4o a stronger competitor against Google's Gemini AI . On Tuesday, Google leaders revealed forthcoming AI capabilities across various Google products, including its own visual search upgrades, during Google's annual I/O conference.

GPT-4o is currently only available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, a $20/month model that debuted in February 2023.

While the latest version of the chatbot will also be available to free users, OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4o in phases, with paying users getting early access to the new software.

Free ChatGPT users will gain access to GPT-4o in the coming weeks, as detailed in OpenAI's initial announcement on Monday:

"GPT-4o’s text and image capabilities are starting to roll out today in ChatGPT. We are making GPT-4o available in the free tier and to Plus users with up to 5x higher message limits. We'll roll out a new version of Voice Mode with GPT-4o in alpha within ChatGPT Plus in the coming weeks."

All these tablet-centric reveals have got tongues wagging here at Tom's Guide, and it's clear there's a real divide between those who favor Crew Cupertino's iPads and others who are unlikely to stray from the company's best MacBooks . As long as Apple does this iPadOS dance, $1,300 is always better spent on a MacBook

So for context, I come at this question from two perspectives: a gamer and a content creator. I do dabble with Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro — coming from a background of YouTube and music production is a hard habit to kick, and I love creating for my own sanity.

For gaming and content consumption, the iPad takes the W easily to the point that my MacBook never leaves my backpack on long haul flights. But as I'll explain now, that's just not enough to warrant a second device.

While it's great that Apple has brought some big AI-driven updates to the two aforementioned prosumer apps on the tablet, when it comes to actually getting stuff done on them, nothing will beat the flow I can get into on a MacBook Air. The touch-based UI and smaller screen turns what would have been a one-step click (or keyboard shortcut) process into a multi-step ordeal of tapping into menus, and while the layout generally lines up between Mac and iPad, trying to move your workflow to a smaller touchscreen just feels a bit cumbersome and alien to me.

UK Editor-in-Chief Jeff Parsons mentioned it a little in his answer to what would make him buy an iPad . Hardware refreshes with new internals and a shiny new OLED display are all fair and good. But without a desktop-class OS and all of its intricacies, what are we even doing here?

Unfortunately, this is the dance that Apple has to do — keep the operating systems different enough that the Cupertino crew doesn't encroach on its own laptop sales by making the tablet look like an infinitely better alternative. And as long as Apple does this iPadOS dance, $1,300 is always better spent on a MacBook.

The heart says iPad, the head says MacBook

Ok, real talk: I love the iPad as a product and as a concept. Honestly, it's probably my favorite device Apple's ever made (bar the iPod Shuffle 4th gen, R.I.P). But as much as I love it, the grown up in me knows that if I had to pick one , the MacBook is the better investment.

The iPad delivers phenomenal power in something elegant and portable. I can go from editing clips from a weekend trip in LumaFusion to swiping through a magazine on Apple News+ in a couple of taps on a device that's as close to a sheet of paper as it's possible to get. That's great and while I understand the backlash against the iPad Pro commercial , I also see the point Apple was trying to communicate.

Thing is, the iPad's ease-of-use is also its Achilles' heel in the form of iPadOS and the nicely-siloed App Store. And to build on that, if you want to unlock the full potential of Apple's slate, expect to pony up for some accessories.

On the other hand, the MacBook is a singular tool for creation, consumption and experimentation. The build quality is superb; the specs are more than someone like me will ever need; and the freedom granted by macOS means if I want to make one purchase that'll grant me the biggest ROI, then the smart money is the MacBook. That still won't stop me looking wistfully at the trendy digital artist sitting across from me in the coffee shop sketching away happily on her beautiful Space Black iPad Pro, though.

While Apple was kind enough to loan me a MacBook Air 15-inch last year, I’ve barely touched it over the following months. Why? Apologies if this sounds contradictory, but Apple already gives me its highly-tailored tech in exactly the right form factor for my daily work and fun factor needs. And when it comes to fun, Crew Cuperinto’s iconic tablet has been the piece of technology that has defined my life over the past few years ever since I picked up an iPad Pro 2021 (12.9-inch) .

I don’t need a MacBook of any description, to be perfectly honest. Why? I’m a Windows user of over two decades; one who works and plays on one of the best gaming PCs . macOS baffles me compared to Big Bill’s operating system, yet with iPadOS 17, that’s simply not a factor. You know how many “computing tasks” I complete on my iPad over your average week? The odd email. And that’s about it. For the rest of the time, I’m simply sitting back and watching the best Netflix shows or best Disney Plus movies on my tablet’s sensational mini-LED screen.

That’s why I’m considering selling unnecessary organs to get my hands on the new 13-inch iPad Pro OLED — a device I’ve been dreaming of for years. When you own a desktop with two OLED displays and an RTX 4090 GPU and work remotely, there's really no need for me to own a laptop/Macbook of any kind. What I do need is a lovely Apple slab I can put down on my sofa as I watch Jurassic Park for the 114th time. With a screen that can now fully turn off its pixels, hoo-boy is the new iPad Pro ever going to prove to be my dream device for lazy, movie-guzzling evenings.

I can't decide — but WWDC will help me choose

As the owner of a 2019 iPad Pro, I don't really need to upgrade yet. But the M4-powered, OLED-enhanced new iPad Pro is making me feel The Urge all the same.

The problem is that, with my current iPad still likely to receive several more years of full OS updates, and my limited need for raw performance from a tablet when I've got a perfectly capable 2021 MacBook Pro on hand, getting a 2024 iPad Pro would be an expensive treat rather than a necessity.

I could always sell or trade in both my tablet and my laptop, and go all-in on a 2TB, 13-inch iPad Pro (in Space Black, of course) with the new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro as an all-in-one replacement. But as we've noted multiple times before, making an iPad a primary work device can quickly become difficult due to the minimal customization options of iPadOS and its apps compared to macOS or Windows.

Saying "I'll wait and see" isn't a particularly definitive answer to the question, but I have a good reason to do so: WWDC 2024 is coming up in June. This will be the time and place that Apple introduces its new iPadOS and macOS versions, likely including some new features as well as a few unique ones. While I don't expect Apple to suddenly announce "macOS for iPad" and solve all my potential problems in one fell swoop, it's that kind of move that would make me comfortable making the leap to an iPad-first work life, and inspire me to put in an order for an iPad Pro 2024.

Otherwise, my current iPad Pro is likely to continue to age gracefully for several years to come, while my MacBook will secure its top spot on my To Upgrade list, even if I hang on a little while longer rather than picking up a MacBook Pro M3 Pro or similar.

I'd rather Apple just gave the MacBook Air a touch screen

The new M4 iPad Pro is a stunning machine that brings AI-ready computing to the mainstream. The touch screen, pencil and form factor make for a perfect portable computer but once you add the keyboard and other upgrades — I'd rather get a MacBook Air.

The biggest problem with the iPad Pro is iPadOS. It has a desktop-level chip, a stunning display and the option of a keyboard. Looking at it from a side view during the "Let Loose" presentation, it looked like a cross between the iMac and a MacBook Air, only smaller. My first reaction was "this needs macOS" but in reality what I really want is a touch screen MacBook Air.

To get an iPad Pro 13-inch with keyboard, 16GB RAM (which requires at least 1TB storage) it would cost $2,248. The same specs on a MacBook Air would cost $1,699. At least for now the MacBook is the no brainer as a computer.

The answer is obvious

For years, people have asked if the iPad Pro could be a laptop replacement. I understand why some pondered this conundrum. After all, the 13-inch iPad Pro gives you plenty of screen real-estate for watching videos, writing, and so on. The Apple Magic Keyboard peripheral also lends it laptop-like usability.

While I do know some folks who use iPad Pros as their main computing device when traveling, that’s not something I can see myself doing. Don’t get me wrong, iPads in general are my favorite tablets. But if I want a machine for basic computing… I’d prefer to use a proper computer! In this case, a MacBook.

iPadOS is a robust operating system that works great when using an iPad Pro (or iPad Air) as a tablet. However, working with Google apps like Drive, GDocs, Chrome and more can be frustrating since said apps feel like hobbled versions of their desktop equivalents — all of which are found within Google Chrome , instead of existing as separate apps in iPadOS. I could give other examples, but as my colleagues in this thread have already said, iPadOS pales in comparison to macOS for even basic computing.

Lastly, we have price — which all but makes this question answer itself. Right now, the lowest price possible for a 13-inch iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is $1,648. Conversely, an entry-level MacBook Air with M2 costs $999. If you upgrade to 16GB of RAM, the laptop costs $1,199 … which is still cheaper than an iPad Pro 13-inch with Magic Keyboard. The M3-driven MacBook Air starts at $1,099 and costs $1,499 with 16GB of RAM. Even the $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 costs less than an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. The tablet is even pricier if you upgrade to more storage and nano-texture glass, where the 13-inch model costs $1,999! But yeah, I think I’ve made my point about pricing.

The iPad Pro M4 seems extremely promising as a tablet. Hell, I think it could be the tablet to beat in 2024! But as amazing as this slate is, you’re better off with a MacBook.

It's a MacBook Air for me

This is a timely question, as I am literally writing my response on a 2018 MacBook Air in which the A, F and J keys come flying off if I type too enthusiastically. So I'm going to have to buy some sort of machine sooner rather than later, in which soon means "like right now, buddy."

The MacBook Air and I have had our differences — damn you to hell, butterfly keyboard — but it's been a faithful companion for work and play. In contrast, the iPad Pro looks like a powerful tablet, but it's still just that — a tablet. Yes, I can add a physical keyboard and a carrying case, but that turns that tablet into a laptop. And I think I'd be more comfortable leaving laptop assembly to the people in Apple's employ.

So it's a MacBook Air for me, probably an M2 model, plucked out of Apple's refurbished aisle, so I can pay up for extra storage — the one part of my current MacBook Air where I've really been feeling the strain. Well, that and the rapidly decomposing keyboard.

Today at OpenAI’s spring update keynote , the company announced that ChatGPT would soon become more easily accessible thanks to a brand new desktop app launching on the Mac.

New Mac app makes ChatGPT more accessible for users

Apple and OpenAI were recently rumored to be striking a partnership ahead of WWDC. This partnership would bring ChatGPT to iOS 18 as a built-in, system-integrated chatbot option.

Ahead of that partnership, OpenAI has announced its own first-party ChatGPT app coming to the Mac. The app is designed to make ChatGPT more easily accessible and perpetually available for users. A very brief preview of the app was shown during the presentation, but more details were shared in a press release .

For both free and paid users, we’re also launching a new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS that is designed to integrate seamlessly into anything you’re doing on your computer. With a simple keyboard shortcut (Option + Space), you can instantly ask ChatGPT a question. You can also take and discuss screenshots directly in the app. You can now have voice conversations with ChatGPT directly from your computer, starting with Voice Mode that has been available in ChatGPT at launch, with GPT-4o’s new audio and video capabilities coming in the future. Whether you want to brainstorm a new idea for your company, prepare for an interview or have a topic you’d like to discuss, tap the headphone icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop app to start a voice conversation.

ChatGPT for Mac is rolling out today to Plus users, and will come to all free GPT users in the weeks ahead. A Windows app is also planned for later this year.

It’s always great to have a new first-party Mac app debut. I always prefer a native app experience over using a web app, and that will be no different with ChatGPT.

Previously, Mac users were limited to using ChatGPT via the web client or a third-party app. For almost a year OpenAI has offered an iPhone app for ChatGPT , but it was unknown whether the AI-powered service would ever receive a dedicated app for the Mac. It’s great to see that change today ahead of hopefully more OpenAI-related Apple news in the weeks ahead.

Apple event showcases new iPad Air, iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard and other updates

Apple revamped its iPad lineup during the tech company's May event.

Today's reveal was "the biggest day for iPad since it's introduction," Tim Cook said as the presentation began.

The iPad Air and iPad Pro got significant upgrades, and Apple also introduced a new Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard for the devices. Apple also lowered the price on the existing iPad 10-inch, which will now start at $349.

Livestreaming of the event, called "Let Loose," was available on Apple's YouTube channel , as well as its website.

Here's what was announced at Apple's May event:

Apple Pencil Pro

Apple introduced a new Apple Pencil Pro to pair with the new iPad Pro and new iPad Air devices.

You can squeeze the pencil to bring up a selected tool, and the pencil will have a gyroscope for precise control of the tool you are using.

The new Pencil Pro will also now support FindMy, so you can locate it in the Find My app if you've misplaced it. Similar to the previous Pencil, Pencil Pro carries and charges magnetically.

The new Apple Pencil Pro starts at $129, and will be available next week.

New Magic Keyboard

The Magic Keyboard has been redesigned to be thinner and lighter to work with the new, thinner iPad Pro, Apple says.

It will come in two colors to match the new Pro, and will have a function keys row and an aluminum trackpad.

The Magic Keyboard will come in two sizes, with the 11-inch starting at $299 and the 13-inch starting at $349.

New iPad Pro

The new iPad Pro , which will be available in silver and space black, will have a display using two OLED panels, which Apple is calling Tandem OLED.

Both sizes of the iPad Pro will feature the new display technologies.

The iPad Pro will also now have the new M4 chip — which was also introduced in the presentation — jumping all the way from the M2, which Apple says will make the device "four times faster."

The camera has also been updated, which can help with document scanning.

The new iPad Pro models will be available next week, with the 11-inch starting at $999 and the 13-inch starting at $1299.

New iPad Air

The new Apple iPad Air will now come in two sizes: an 11-inch display and a larger 13-inch display. Both will have the updated M2 chip.

Other key changes: the front-facing camera will now be on the landscape edge and the iPads will have spatial audio.

New color options include blue and purple, in addition to the existing starlight and space gray finishes.

The iPads will work with the Magic Keyboard. For storage, they are adding 512MB and 1T options.

The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599, and the 13-inch starts at $799.

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro updates

Creators rejoice! New updates to Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro were also announced during the May event.

For Final Cut Pro , Apple introduced a live multicam feature , in which a user can connect up to four cameras. They also announced a new app for the iPhone and iPad — Final Cut Camera — which will allow users to connect four iPhones or iPads for video shoots.

Updates to Logic Pro include new drums and effects, and it can now use machine learning to model sound in detail.

Hands-On With the New M4 OLED iPad Pro

Today is the official launch day of the new iPad Pro models, and these updated tablets mark the biggest feature and design refresh that we've seen for the ‌iPad Pro‌ in several years. We picked up one of the new 13-inch models to check out everything new.

With the 13-inch model weighing in just over a pound, the decrease in weight and size is noticeable and makes it feel much more portable. The 11-inch model is under a pound, so it's even easier to carry around. This is a design change that you'll feel if you've used a 2018 or later ‌iPad Pro‌.

The OLED display is, unsurprisingly, super nice. It's bright, the colors are vibrant, the blacks are incredibly black, and the contrast is much improved. The mini-LED display of the prior-generation 13-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ was good, but this is better. Still, if you have that one, it's probably not worth upgrading for OLED. Nano-texture, an add-on option for higher-end models, cuts down on glare, but it also diminishes the OLED display a bit because of the matte finish.

Apple moved the camera to the landscape edge of the ‌iPad Pro‌, which makes a lot of sense because most people are probably using it in that orientation. Video calls no longer require turning the iPad into an awkward position if you have a keyboard attached. Note that Apple did pull the Ultra Wide camera, so there's just a single Wide lens and a LiDAR sensor.

The M4 chip is incredibly fast, fast enough that it's likely most people purchasing an ‌iPad Pro‌ aren't going to be able to take full advantage of its capabilities. It's going to be hard to max this chip out, and it'll handle audio and video editing with ease. Apple is focusing heavily on AI with its new operating system updates, so those AI will be able to take advantage of that processing power, and it'll come in handy for future proofing.

If you want to use the ‌iPad Pro‌ for anything that involves typing, the Magic Keyboard is a must. It's priced starting at $299, but it's thin, light weight, and the aluminum hand rest makes it feel Mac-like. It's got good key travel and the glass trackpad is a major improvement.

For Apple Pencil users, the ‌Apple Pencil‌ Pro's haptic feedback is the most noticeable change. With the squeeze gesture, you can swap tools more quickly and have more feedback when creating sketches and art. Barrel roll also lets you use the ‌Apple Pencil‌ more like an actual writing or drawing implement. The ‌Apple Pencil‌ charges magnetically, and pairs automatically, like prior versions.

The only real downside to the ‌iPad Pro‌ is the software that it's running. iPadOS is still so limited compared to macOS, especially for multitasking and app functionality. Federico Viticci's recent writeup on the iPadOS basics that Apple gets wrong is well worth a read . Still, there are some workflows that are adaptable to the ‌iPad Pro‌, and it's a great portable machine. If you're a person who can make use of a tablet, this is the best one you can get.

Create a presentation in Keynote on Mac

To create a new presentation, you first choose a theme to use as a starting point. Themes use coordinated fonts and colours for a unified look and often include placeholders that you can replace with your own content.

To open Keynote, click the Keynote icon in the Dock, Launchpad or the Applications folder.

If the theme chooser (shown below) doesn’t appear, click New Document in the bottom-left corner of the dialogue. You can also choose File > New (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

The theme chooser. A sidebar on the left lists theme categories you can click to filter options. On the right are thumbnails of pre-designed themes, arranged in rows by category.

Note: If you’d like the ability to format table and chart data using the conventions of another language, choose the language in the bottom-left corner before choosing a theme. See Format a presentation for another language .

In the theme chooser, browse the themes by category, then double-click the one that looks closest to what you want to create. To narrow the choices, click a category along the sidebar on the left.

Some themes aren’t downloaded to your computer until you choose them or open a presentation that uses one. If your connection is slow or you’re offline when this happens, placeholder images and slide backgrounds in the presentation may appear at a lower resolution until you’re online again or the theme finishes downloading.

Each slide layout offers a different arrangement of text and images that you use as a starting point for your content.

To add your own content to the presentation, do any of the following:

Add text: Double-click place holder text and type your own.

Select File > Save, enter a name, select a location, then click Save.

Keynote automatically saves your changes as you work, so you don’t need to worry about saving your presentation manually. However, it’s a good idea to rename your presentation so you can easily find it the next time you want to work on it. You can change the name of the presentation or change where it’s saved anytime.

If iCloud Drive is set up on your Mac, Keynote saves the presentation to iCloud Drive by default.

To end the presentation, press the Esc (Escape) key. For more ways to show a presentation, see Play a presentation on your Mac .

To close the presentation, click the red close button in the top-left corner of the window.

Select a default theme for new presentations

You can set Keynote to always open a new presentation in a particular theme instead of from the theme chooser.

Choose Keynote > Settings (from the Keynote menu at the top of your screen).

Click General at the top of the window, then select “Use theme” in the For New Presentations controls.

The name that appears after “Use theme” is the currently selected theme.

Click the Change Theme button, select a theme, then click Select.

To close the window, click the red close button in the upper-left corner.

After you change this setting, you can still open a new presentation with a different theme. Hold down the Option key, then select File > New from Theme Chooser (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

How to get VMWare Fusion Pro 13 for free

VMWare's new owner Broadcom announced that it was acquiring the company in 2022 , and the deal was completed in November 2023. Now Broadcom says that it wants to simplify how it sells its Windows virtualization apps, and that includes for personal use.

"The most exciting part is that Fusion Pro and Workstation Pro will now have two license models," wrote Broadcom's Michael Roy in a blog post . "We now provide a Free Personal Use or a Paid Commercial Use subscription for our Pro apps... [so] everyday users who want a virtual lab on their Mac, Windows or Linux computer can do so for free simply by registering and downloading."

There are several steps to registering and downloading, though.

Go to Broadcom's support website
Click on Register at top right
Sign up then when asked to build a profile, click "I'll do it later"
Now go to a separate download page
Click on the latest version number (current 13.5.2)
Tick the box to agree to the terms and conditions
Click on the download icon next to VMware Fusion 13.5.2 (for Intel-based and Apple silicon Macs)
When asked about "additional verification," click Yes
Broadcom displays all your registration details, but now add in your full postal address
Check that the page has selected I agree , then click Submit
Lastly, you're returned to the download page where you need to now click the same download icon again

Note that at time of writing, Broadcom's servers appear to be under some strain. Downloading will take a long time to start. And, in our trials, it timed out a few times.

What VMWare Fusion Pro 13 does is specifically give you the ability to run alternate operating systems in a bottle — like the ARM version of Windows on your Mac. Without delving into the differences between the two, Windows for ARM is not the same as the full Intel Windows so you have to get the correct version of Windows to run on VMWare, and for the most part, the correct apps.

But then even if a great deal of business software was originally on Windows and may not have come to the Mac, much of it is now online. With a cloud version of an app, you don't need any Windows virtualization and can just work from any browser on the Mac.

Also, much business software actually has come to the Mac. So for instance it is better to run the native version of Microsoft Word or Excel than it is to get the Windows ARM edition.

Plus if the reason to get Windows is to play games, then a much better option than VMWare is to use Whisky .

I have "Account verification is Pending. Please try after some time." since yesterday when I try to download Fusion for personal use. Anyone else getting that?

I've been using it for a while; I ditched Parallels. It has the same built-in download Windows 11 ARM (which is extelemy well featured as of this beta and the interface is, I suspect, Windows 12 for Intel machines) and runs flawlessly for me on my Mac Studio Ultra. It runs Windows and Applications faster than most of my PCs. It was also far easier to set up bridged networking (its own LAN IP) for the VM than Parallels. I also set up secondary PC VM drives; the interface is easy to use yet allows powerful control. I found Parallels aimed at novice users and frustrating at times. VMware is free for personal use; it is unbelievable. I give VMware eleven out of ten stars. :) For anyone interested in playing around with running Opensimulator, where avatars own land (for free), can build amazing stuff, and walk around inside (think Second Life or OSGrid on your computer), I am a beta tester for DreamGrid, which is a Windows-only system (link below). My Windows servers are dual Xeon Dell Precision Workstations with 192 GB RAM running Windows 10 or 11 Pro. To my amazement, I could set up a massive Grid within Windows 11 ARM Pro using a VMWare VM on my Mac Studio M2 Ultra and an M2 Max. After port forwarding my router, the access allowed visits from avatars worldwide and from the Mac side of the Mac Studio running FireStrorm OS Viewer. This was the first such test of the system on an Apple Silicon Mac, and it passed with flying colors; in fact, it was as fast as the Dell servers. What is cool is that instead of potentially spending thousands of dollars at Second Life, this setup (assuming you have an M-class Mac and 16 GB or more RAM) is 100% free. I already had an account with VMWare before the takeover by Broadcom; I was surprised mine worked, given the changes there. I'd try starting over with a different email; it sounds like a database glitch on their end to me.

Thank you so much for the helpful instructions to get the personal, free version of VMWare Fusion (esp the "download page" link). Some of the instructions did not exactly match the web-page presentation but they were close enough to figure out what was needed. The major (fundamental) difference between Parallels and VMWare Fusion is the Fusion requirement to only run ARM software on ARM engines. When I upgraded from Intel MacBook Pro to ARM (M1 then) kit I could no longer run previously VMWare-hosted operating systems, which were all Intel code. I had to find various ARM implementations of Linux and Windows operating systems to carry on working in VMWare. In those days (ahhh, so long ago) Windows ARM was even more experimental and it was not clear that Microsoft would actually properly support ARM architecture. I switched to Parallels to avoid alpha testing Windows-ARM for MS on ARM architecture. It is still the case that Parallels runs Intel code but VMWare does not. Linux is certainly stable enough on both Intel and ARM architectures, running in both Parallels and VMWare virtual hosting environments, but I'll have to spend some time seeing how much Windows-ARM has improved in VMWare as Windows-Intel still appears to only be an option in Parallels. But hey... free is pretty cheap :-)
