So, you’re getting ready for a visit (or stay) in an English-speaking country and are eager to make friends. But in the back of your mind you’re thinking: “I have no idea how to introduce myself in English!”

Self-introductions are the cornerstone of beginning a new relationship. It’s during a self-introduction that you let the other person know all the basics: your name, your age, your occupation, what you enjoy doing in your spare time, and so on. Self-introductions can be difficult and nerve-racking enough in your own language (they are for me, anyway!), so doing them in another language might leave you feeling shy or diffident.

While I can’t help you feel less shy, I can help you feel more prepared for your first few introductions in English. In this article, I’ll be going over how to identify yourself, how to place yourself in society, and how to share personal details with those you want to form a deeper bond with, all in American English.

1. Body Language

There is one thing I want to go over before verbal introductions: body language. Body language is something you can use to your benefit, regardless of your English-language skills.

It’s important to know what your posture, gestures, and facial expressions are telling others about you, and how to use your body language to your advantage. Below is a quick list of things you should do when introducing yourself

• Smile when introducing yourself. Smiling indicates a positive mood and is likely to make you a more appealing conversation partner.
• Stand (or sit) up straight. This indicates that you’re confident, comfortable, and ready to engage in a conversation. You can also use this to your benefit by appearing more confident than you really are—and sometimes appearing more confident can help you feel more confident, too!
• Shake hands. A brief, friendly handshake is one of the most common ways to greet someone in the United States upon first meeting, and can be done with almost anyone you meet, regardless of gender or social status. This is a good way to begin an introduction, particularly in business environments.
• Maintain eye contact (but not too much). In the United States, most people prefer to speak with someone who’s not “afraid” to look them in the eyes. It’s considered a sign of honesty, trustworthiness, and friendliness to maintain eye contact during a conversation. Maintaining eye contact indicates that you’re listening and interested in the discussion. But be careful not to come off as “creepy” by staring into their eyes for very long periods of time; allow yourself to casually look away from time to time, and be sure to blink. 😉

2. Identifying Yourself

How do you introduce yourself in English? Or better yet, how do you introduce yourself briefly in English? The best way to initiate a conversation is with a cheery “Hi” or “Hey,” and a smile! If you need to do some brushing up on greetings, you can learn more about English greetings in our dedicated article .

1- Stating Your Name

Once you’ve gotten the conversation started with an initial greeting, you can offer your name. There’s a variety of ways you can do this; below I’ve outlined the most common sentence structures with examples.

• My name is Jamie .
• I’m Ira .
• My name is Lillian , or Lily for short.
• You can call me Bob .

If you want to ask someone else’s name, you can use one of the following sentences:

• My name is Valerie . What’s yours?
• This a more formal way of asking someone’s name and is usually the best option, especially in business environments.
• This is less formal, but it’s acceptable in most social situations that don’t require a high level of professionalism.

During this stage, also be sure to say “Nice to meet you,” as this is seen as respectful and friendly. If the other person has already said this, you can say “ It’s nice to meet you too ,” or “ Thank you. Likewise. ”

In the United States, it’s not very common to ask about someone’s age unless there’s a good reason to. That said, it’s not a taboo either. My recommendation for most social situations is to keep from asking about age unless the person seems to be about the same age as you.

Here are a couple of ways you can ask about someone’s age:

• I’m thirty years old. How about you?
• May I ask how old you are?
• May I ask your age?
• Note that this is the most informal way of asking someone’s age, but it does sound more natural in speech than the others. This phrase is best used in laid-back, informal environments with people about your own age.

Now, here are the most common ways to answer the question:

• I’m thirty years old.
• I’m twenty-five .
• I turned twenty last June .
• I’m turning forty-three this November .

3- Nationality

In the United States, you may be asked about your nationality , or where you’re from. Here are a few simple ways to answer the question:

• I’m from China .
• I’m Norwegian .
• I came here from Russia .
• I’m visiting from Japan .

3. Placing Yourself in Society

After you and the person you’re speaking with have established the basics, it’s only natural for the conversation to steer toward what you do . Three major factors of society (and your place in it) are: education , work, and family. Here, I’ll be going over each of these factors.

1- Education: Stating Your School & Major

If you’re in school, you’ll likely be asked a lot about what school you’re going to and what you’re majoring in. Here are a few basic answers to these questions:

• I’m a student at Harvard .
• I’m studying at Arizona State University .
• I’m studying Psychology .
• My major is Food and Nutrition .
• I haven’t chosen a major yet.

If you recently graduated or are no longer going to school, you can answer like this. Note the use of past-tense verbs in these answers.

• I used to be a student at Harvard .
• I went to school at Arizona State University .
• I studied Psychology .
• I majored in Food and Nutrition .

Below is a list of popular majors (in no particular order), but you can also take a look at our list of common school subjects for more possibilities!

2- Stating Profession

In the United States, one of the most common questions and conversation topics is work. When you first meet someone, they’re likely to ask what you do for a living. As you continue to interact with that person, many conversations will likely have to do with work.

Here are a few ways you can respond to someone after they ask about your profession:

• I work at NASA .
• I’m working at Apple .
• I work as an engineer .
• I work as an engineer at NASA .
• I’m a doctor .
• I do accounting for a living.
• I’ve been a pilot for thirty years.
• Here, you can also use one of the above sentences to explain what you do while self-employed. You’ll see an example of this in the sample essay section.
• I’m not currently employed.

To ask about their profession or job, you can use the following sentences:

• What do you do for a living?
• What’s your occupation?
• I’m a real estate agent . What about you?

3- Talking About Family

Family may be the most unique topic in this article, and one that’s both personal and societal. You may or may not be asked about your family during your first conversation with someone. But if you are, and you feel like opening up a little bit, below are a few sentences you can use to talk about your family .

• I have a big family.
• I have a younger brother .
• I have one sister .
• I have two uncles and one aunt .
• My grandma is a bookkeeper .
• My mom and I aren’t very close.

If you’re not comfortable talking about your family, that’s completely fine and the other person will likely understand. You can let them know this as follows:

• I don’t really like talking about my family. Can we talk about something else?

4. Sharing Personal Details

Usually, a conversation will begin to drift toward lighter, more personal matters after the basics are out of the way. This doesn’t always happen during your first conversation with someone, but the following topics are likely to come up sooner or later.

In the United States, people love (and treat) their pets like family. Don’t be surprised if the person you’re talking with brings up their pets, or wants to know about yours.

• I have a bird named Chirpy .
• I have two fish .
• I have a cat and a lizard . Their names are Lola and Slinky .
• I have one cat and one lizard .
• I used to have a dog , but we gave it away .
• I don’t have any pets.

Many friendships begin when two (or more) people realize they have similar interests. Talking about hobbies or favorite activities is one of the simplest ways to have a deeper conversation with someone. And you never know; you may find yourself a new gym buddy, writing critique group, or fellow foodie.

Here are a few ways to describe what hobbies you’re into and what you enjoy doing in your spare time:

• I enjoy doing free writing .
• I like drawing .
• I play video games in my free time.
• I jog and watch TV in my free time.
• I don’t have any hobbies.

5. Bonus: “Favorite” Questions!

So far, I’ve gone over basic questions and topics that usually come up during introductions. But you may find that people you meet are curious to know more about you and will start asking about your favorite of something (which of something you like the most).

The following questions are commonly asked when people are getting to know each other, and are usually a lot more interesting than talking about work or school. 😉

• What’s your favorite color ?
• What’s your favorite animal?
• What’s your favorite subject in school?
• What’s your favorite movie/ TV show ?
• What’s your favorite band/song?
• What’s your favorite book?
• What’s your favorite food ?
• What’s your favorite candy/dessert?

These are questions that you can ask your conversation partner as well to keep the conversation going and entertaining! This is also a great way to find similarities (and differences) between you and the person you’re meeting.

6. “Introduce Myself in English” Essay

I’m self-employed as a writer and editor. I have a big family. I have one sister and one brother. I used to have a cat, but she passed away. I do writing and walking in my free time. Most students who apply to top-tier colleges have exceptional grades, standardized test scores, and extracurricular activities. How do admissions officers decide which applicants to choose among all these stellar students? One way is on the strength of their college essay .

This personal statement, along with other qualitative factors like teacher recommendations, helps the admissions committee see who you really are—the person behind the transcript. So, it’s obviously important to write a great one.

What Is the Purpose of the College Essay? 

Your college essay helps you stand out in a pool of qualified candidates. If effective, it will also show the admissions committee more of your personality and allow them to get a sense of how you’ll fit in with and contribute to the student body and institution. Additionally, it will show the school that you can express yourself persuasively and clearly in writing, which is an important part of most careers, no matter where you end up. 

Typically, students must submit a personal statement (usually the Common App essay ) along with school-specific supplements. Some students are surprised to learn that essays typically count for around 25% of your entire application at the top 250 schools. That’s an enormous chunk, especially considering that, unlike your transcript and extracurriculars, it isn’t an assessment of your entire high school career.  

The purpose of the college essay is to paint a complete picture of yourself, showing admissions committees the person behind the grades and test scores. A strong college essay shows your unique experiences, personality, perspective, interests, and values—ultimately, what makes you unique. After all, people attend college, not their grades or test scores. The college essay also provides students with a considerable amount of agency in their application, empowering them to share their own stories.

How to Stand Out Without Showing Off 

It’s important to strike a balance between exploring your achievements and demonstrating humility. Your aim should be to focus on the meaning behind the experience and how it changed your outlook, not the accomplishment itself. 

Confidence without cockiness is the key here. Don’t simply catalog your achievements, there are other areas on your application to share them. Rather, mention your achievements when they’re critical to the story you’re telling. It’s helpful to think of achievements as compliments, not highlights, of your college essay.  

Take this essay excerpt , for example:

My parents’ separation allowed me the space to explore my own strengths and interests as each of them became individually busier. As early as middle school, I was riding the light rail train by myself, reading maps to get myself home, and applying to special academic programs without urging from my parents. Even as I took more initiatives on my own, my parents both continued to see me as somewhat immature. All of that changed three years ago, when I applied and was accepted to the SNYI-L summer exchange program in Morocco. I would be studying Arabic and learning my way around the city of Marrakesh. Although I think my parents were a little surprised when I told them my news, the addition of a fully-funded scholarship convinced them to let me go. 

Instead of saying “ I received this scholarship and participated in this prestigious program, ” the author tells a story, demonstrating their growth and initiative through specific actions (riding the train alone, applying academic programs on her own, etc.)—effectively showing rather than telling.

15 Tips for Writing an Essay About Yourself 

1. start early .

Leave yourself plenty of time to write your college essay—it’s stressful enough to compose a compelling essay without putting yourself under a deadline. Starting early on your essay also leaves you time to edit and refine your work, have others read your work (for example, your parents or a teacher), and carefully proofread.

2. Choose a topic that’s meaningful to you 

The foundation of a great essay is selecting a topic that has real meaning for you. If you’re passionate about the subject, the reader will feel it. Alternatively, choosing a topic you think the admissions committee is looking for, but isn’t all that important to you, won’t make for a compelling essay; it will be obvious that you’re not very invested in it.

3. Show your personality 

One of the main points of your college essay is to convey your personality. Admissions officers will see your transcript and read about the awards you’ve won, but the essay will help them get to know you as a person. Make sure your personality is evident in each part—if you are a jokester, incorporate some humor. Your friends should be able to pick your essay from an anonymous pile, read it, and recognize it as yours. In that same vein, someone who doesn’t know you at all should feel like they understand your personality after reading your essay. 

4. Write in your own voice 

In order to bring authenticity to your essay, you’ll need to write in your own voice. Don’t be overly formal (but don’t be too casual, either). Remember: you want the reader to get to know the real you, not a version of you that comes across as overly stiff or stilted. You should feel free to use contractions, incorporate dialogue, and employ vocabulary that comes naturally to you. 

5. Use specific examples 

Real, concrete stories and examples will help your essay come to life. They’ll add color to your narrative and make it more compelling for the reader. The goal, after all, is to engage your audience—the admissions committee. 

For example, instead of stating that you care about animals, you should tell us a story about how you took care of an injured stray cat. 

Consider this side-by-side comparison:

Example 1: I care deeply about animals and even once rescued a stray cat. The cat had an injured leg, and I helped nurse it back to health.

Example 2: I lost many nights of sleep trying to nurse the stray cat back to health. Its leg infection was extremely painful, and it meowed in distress up until the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t mind it though; what mattered was that the cat regained its strength. So, I stayed awake to administer its medicine and soothe it with loving ear rubs.

The second example helps us visualize this situation and is more illustrative of the writer’s personality. Because she stayed awake to care for the cat, we can infer that she is a compassionate person who cares about animals. We don’t get the same depth with the first example. 

6. Don’t be afraid to show off… 

You should always put your best foot forward—the whole point of your essay is to market yourself to colleges. This isn’t the time to be shy about your accomplishments, skills, or qualities. 

7. …While also maintaining humility 

But don’t brag. Demonstrate humility when discussing your achievements. In the example above, for instance, the author discusses her accomplishments while noting that her parents thought of her as immature. This is a great way to show humility while still highlighting that she was able to prove her parents wrong.

8. Be vulnerable 

Vulnerability goes hand in hand with humility and authenticity. Don’t shy away from exploring how your experience affected you and the feelings you experienced. This, too, will help your story come to life. 

Here’s an excerpt from a Common App essay that demonstrates vulnerability and allows us to connect with the writer:  

“You ruined my life!” After months of quiet anger, my brother finally confronted me. To my shame, I had been appallingly ignorant of his pain. 

Despite being twins, Max and I are profoundly different. Having intellectual interests from a young age that, well, interested very few of my peers, I often felt out of step in comparison with my highly-social brother. Everything appeared to come effortlessly for Max and, while we share an extremely tight bond, his frequent time away with friends left me feeling more and more alone as we grew older.

In this essay, the writer isn’t afraid to share his insecurities and feelings with us. He states that he had been “ appallingly ignorant ” of his brother’s pain, that he “ often felt out of step ” compared to his brother, and that he had felt “ more and more alone ” over time. These are all emotions that you may not necessarily share with someone you just met, but it’s exactly this vulnerability that makes the essay more raw and relatable. 

9. Don’t lie or hyperbolize 

This essay is about the authentic you. Lying or hyperbolizing to make yourself sound better will not only make your essay—and entire application—less genuine, but it will also weaken it. More than likely, it will be obvious that you’re exaggerating. Plus, if colleges later find out that you haven’t been truthful in any part of your application, it’s grounds for revoking your acceptance or even expulsion if you’ve already matriculated. 

10. Avoid cliches 

How the COVID-19 pandemic changed your life. A sports victory as a metaphor for your journey. How a pet death altered your entire outlook. Admissions officers have seen more essays on these topics than they can possibly count. Unless you have a truly unique angle, then it’s in your best interest to avoid them. Learn which topics are cliche and how to fix them . 

11. Proofread 

This is a critical step. Even a small error can break your essay, however amazing it is otherwise. Make sure you read it over carefully, and get another set of eyes (or two or three other sets of eyes), just in case.

12. Abstain from using AI

There are a handful of good reasons to avoid using artificial intelligence (AI) to write your college essay. Most importantly, it’s dishonest and likely to be not very good; AI-generated essays are generally formulaic, generic, and boring—everything you’re trying to avoid being.   The purpose of the college essay is to share what makes you unique and highlight your personal experiences and perspectives, something that AI can’t capture.

13. Use parents as advisors, not editors

The voice of an adult is different from that of a high schooler and admissions committees are experts at spotting the writing of parents. Parents can play a valuable role in creating your college essay—advising, proofreading, and providing encouragement during those stressful moments. However, they should not write or edit your college essay with their words.

14. Have a hook

Admissions committees have a lot of essays to read and getting their attention is essential for standing out among a crowded field of applicants. A great hook captures your reader’s imagination and encourages them to keep reading your essay. Start strong, first impressions are everything!

15. Give them something to remember

The ending of your college essay is just as important as the beginning. Give your reader something to remember by composing an engaging and punchy paragraph or line—called a kicker in journalism—that ties everything you’ve written above together.

The first sentence of your essay should grab your reader’s attention and make them want to keep reading. You can achieve this by starting it with a hook, which can be a surprising fact, an interesting quote, or a provocative statement. 

After you have hooked your reader, you can provide some background information about yourself. This can include your name where you are from, your educational background, or any relevant experiences that relate to the topic of your essay.

Your thesis statement is the most important part of your essay and should be introduced early on in your introduction. Your thesis statement should clearly state your main argument or point of view on the topic you are writing about.

What is an Introduction?

An introduction is a way of saying “hello” and starting a conversation. It can be as simple as saying your name and asking someone how they are doing. This is an informal or casual way to introduce yourself. It works best with people you meet outside of a work setting.

In some cases, you may want to give more information about yourself in your introduction. For example, you may need to give a presentation, attend a job interview, or networking event. In these cases, you may want to talk more about who you are and what you do. This will require a more formal or professional introduction.

1. Introduce Yourself in Conversation

Let’s start with some basic phrases for introducing yourself.

These expressions are useful for starting a conversation when you meet someone new.

“Hi, my name is _______. I don’t think we’ve met before!”

“Nice to meet you. I’m _______(name). How are you?”

“I’m great, thanks. And you?”

These phrases are all straightforward and easy to remember. You can use them in almost any situation where you need to introduce yourself.

You could also give information about what you do, for example,

• “Hi, my name is Caitriona. I am your English teacher . What is your name?”
• “Hi, my name is John. I work in marketing. What do you do?”

Alternative Ways To Say “Hi”

In addition to these basic phrases, there are alternative ways to say “hi” and start a conversation. Here are a few examples:

• “Hi there!”
• “Howdy!”
• “What’s the story ?” (informal way of asking what is happening)

When introducing yourself in class, you may want to include information such as:

• Where you’re from
• What you like to do in your free time
• What you’re hoping to learn in the class

“Hi everyone, my name is Sarah. I’m from Canada, and I like to play tennis and travel. I’m taking this class to improve my grammar and speaking skills.

“Hello, my name is John. I am moving to the United States for my studies. I like to play basketball and listen to music. I’m taking this class to improve my listening skills.”

Remember, when introducing yourself in class, be clear and concise. Try to avoid rambling on and on about topics that are not relevant.

If you are a teacher and you want to introduce yourself, you can say:

• “Hello, my name is _____. I am your _____ teacher.”
• “Hi everyone, I’m _____. I’ll be your teacher this semester.”
• “Good morning/afternoon/evening class. My name is _____, and I’ll be teaching you _____.”

3. Introduce Yourself in an Essay

If you need to write an essay about yourself, start by brainstorming ideas of what they are looking for. Write down an outline of important information or points that you would like to include in the essay.

Once you have brainstormed some ideas, it’s time to start writing. Begin with a brief introduction that tells the reader about you and the essay’s purpose. Then, add a few sentences to each section of the outline, if required. Remember to proofread your work for grammar mistakes before you submit it.

Example of a Basic Essay Introduction:

“My name is _____and I am from _____. I am currently a student at the University of _____, studying _____. In my free time, I enjoy _____. I work in _____. I am also a member of the _____ club/organization. I am interested in _____. I am hardworking and attentive to detail. In the future, I hope to _____.”

In this example, the student has given information about themselves, their studies, responsibilities, and hobbies. They have also included some information about their future goals. Feel free to include anything else that is relevant to your introduction, such as character traits or skills.

4. Introduce Yourself in a Job Interview

If you need to introduce yourself in a job interview, start by researching the company and the role you are applying for. This will help you to understand what they are looking for in a candidate.

When you go into the interview, make sure to have a firm handshake and make eye contact with the interviewer. Smile and give them your name. It is also a good idea to have an “elevator pitch” prepared. This is a short summary of your skills and experience that you can give to the interviewer if they ask for it.

Here are some example phrases you can use to introduce yourself in a job interview:

• “I am _____, and I am interested in the _____ position.”
• “I am _____, and I am a recent graduate of _____.”
• I have _____ years of experience in the _____ industry.

For your elevator pitch, give a brief overview of who you are, what you do, and your future goals. Make sure it is concise and to the point.

Interviewer: “Tell me about yourself?”

“I am a recent graduate of the University of _____ with a degree in _____. I have experience working in _____, and I am interested in applying for the _____ position. I am a hard worker with great communication skills. I’ve _____ (mention projects you’ve completed or work relevant to the role). I am confident that I would be a valuable asset to your team.”

In this example, the candidate has given an overview of their education, experience, and skills. They have also shown that they are familiar with the company and the role they are applying for.

Remember, the goal is to stand out from the other candidates and show that you are the best person for the job. So, take your time to prepare for your interview and make sure you have a great introduction ready. Good luck!

5. Introduce Yourself in a Presentation

If you need to introduce yourself in a presentation, start by welcoming the audience and introducing yourself. Give your name, your title, and a brief overview of your experience. Then, give some background information on the topic of your presentation.

For example, if you are presenting the history of the American Revolution, you might say something like:

“Hello, my name is _____, and I am a history teacher at _____ High School . Today, I’m going to talk to you about the American Revolution. This was a time in which the thirteen colonies of America fought for their independence from Britain. I’m going to tell you about the events leading up to the war, the war itself, and the aftermath.”

In this example, the speaker has given their name and their occupation. They have also announced the topic of their presentation and provided some background information on it.

Another example:

“Hello, my name is _____, and I am a marketing consultant. I am here to talk to you about social media marketing. Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to reach new customers and grow your business. I’m going to talk to you about how to create a social media strategy, what platforms to use, and how to measure your success .

Remember, when you are introducing yourself in a presentation, you want to give the audience an overview of who you are and what you will be talking about. You can also mention the other presentation members if appropriate.

6. Introducing Yourself at a Networking Event

Networking events are a great way to introduce yourself to new people and gain business contacts. You will gain confidence as you introduce yourself to more and more people.

• “Hi, I’m _____. I’m a _____. I work with _____ (or I’m interested in _____).”

How to Introduce Yourself in English With Confidence: 12 Tips With Audio

One of the very first English lessons you learn is how to introduce yourself.

But how do these lessons  stack up (compare) against what happens in the real world?

Below, I’m going to go over all the English phrases you need to meet someone new. We’ll talk about how to introduce yourself in English in both informal and formal situations—even if you’re a complete beginner .

1. Say “Hello,” followed by your name

2. say “nice to meet you, [the other person’s name]”, 3. use common greetings depending on the time of day, 4. provide basic information about yourself, 5. talk about the things that make you unique, 6. ask basic questions about the other person, 7. compliment the other person, 8. give positive, concise answers to someone’s questions, 9. ask lots of follow-up questions, 10. prepare to end the conversation, 11. don’t forget to use your body language, 12. practice, practice, practice, and one more thing....

The easiest way to  break the ice (start a conversation) is to just say “Hello, I’m [your name].”

Amy: Hello! I’m Amy.  

The other person will say:

Brian: Hi there! I’m Brian.

If the other person  initiates (starts) the conversation, use this phrase to answer them.

Amy: Nice to meet you, Brian!  

You can also break the ice with time-dependent greetings like:

• Good morning. If your clock says “a.m.,” use this greeting. 
• Good afternoon. Use this greeting from 12:00 p.m. to when the sun goes down. This is usually around 5 to 6 p.m.
• Good evening. If it’s already dark outside and it’s not yet 12:00 a.m., use this greeting.

Here are other English greetings you can use based on how formal the situation is .

To introduce yourself in English, give a little bit of information about yourself.

For example, in an informal context, saying where you’re from is a good conversation starter.

I’m from New York.

In a formal context, like a job interview or meeting new co-workers, you want to have an elevator pitch . The reason it’s called an “elevator pitch” is because it answers this question: if you only have one elevator ride (or 30 seconds) to introduce yourself to a business associate, what would you say?

Let’s have a look at sample elevator pitches from our two friends, Amy and Brian:

Amy: I work for an IT company in Lower Manhattan.

Brian: I’ve been working as a freelance translator since 2002.

They can also say something like:

Amy: I’ve been working as an editor for Select Magazine for 15 years.

Brian: During the last 10 years, I’ve been in charge of managing translation projects related to marketing.

• Learn words in the context of sentences

• Go beyond just a superficial understanding

See? These statements may be short and to the point, but they’re impactful because they go into the important details  right off the bat (immediately). If you have any impressive qualifications (like Amy’s 15 years of experience with Select Magazine), introduce yourself with those.

Once you’ve gotten the basics out of the way, you can go into a little more detail. You want to answer the question, “What makes you different?”

In an informal context, you can talk about your interests:

When I’m not working, I like to go hiking.

In a formal context, you can summarize your skills, experiences and other things that make you stand out from other professionals:

Amy: I met Bill Gates in 2015 when I was working as an assistant. He shared some thoughts on building your own brand. I learned a lot from him.

Brian: I used to live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I got to work with the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law. I think this experience has improved my legal research skills tremendously.

No matter the context, it’s important not to lie or  exaggerate (make something look better than it really is). Give the basic facts, plus a little bit of your opinion as well. 

Although talking about yourself is important, you should let the other person talk as well. Not only is this the polite thing to do, but it also gives you a reason to keep the conversation going.

The safest question to ask someone you’re meeting for the first time—whether in a formal or informal context—is:

How are you?

People will usually respond to “How are you?” with “I’m fine, thank you,” though you should expect other answers about how they’re feeling or doing.

Here are some other questions you can ask:

• Images, examples, video examples, and tips
• Covering all the tricky edge cases, eg.: phrases, idioms, collocations, and separable verbs
• No reliance on volunteers or open source dictionaries

Another great way to keep a conversation going is to  compliment the other person. This means finding something you like about them and talking about it.

Just be a little careful when choosing what to compliment about the other person. Avoid discussing permanent characteristics like someone’s physical appearance, accent, etc. because it can really come off wrong. They might be offended or think it’s too  forward (overly friendly).

Instead, try these compliments:

I love your dress.

You have a beautiful dog.

Is that your car? I really like it.

Remember the questions we talked about in Tip #6? Make sure you know how to answer those questions as well.

Even when questions are specific (asking for detailed information), you can prepare a general response—i.e., an answer you can use in almost any situation.

Your answer can follow this template:

• Say something positive
• Add in more detail to keep the conversation interesting (optional)
• Ask a question back to the other person

Brian: What do you think of the restaurant?  

Amy: I’d go back here again just for the tacos! How was the food for you?  

Brian: How do you find the conference?  

Amy: The speakers have been really interesting! Which talks did you like?

Brian: How was your trip?

Amy: It went well. I really enjoyed the two weeks there, but I’m also glad to be back! How did your trip go?  

If you aren’t confident in your English skills, it’s much easier to listen to the other person.

Pay attention to the answers from your first questions, and ask for more details. People love to talk about themselves, so this won’t be a problem.

Here’s a sample conversation with lots of follow-up questions.

Amy: How are you?

Brian: A little tired. I didn’t sleep much last night.

Amy: Ah, why is that?

Brian: I just came home from my flight, and I’m still jet-lagged.

Amy: Travel can be really exhausting! Where did you fly from?

Brian: I came from London last night.

Amy: Ah yeah, that’s a major time difference. How long did the flight take?

Brian: Just a few hours. But I had a long layover in Frankfurt.

Of course, you aren’t going to be talking to the other person forever. At some point, you have to end the conversation.

If you have nothing more to say, or you’re not connecting with the person you’re talking with, you need a way to leave politely. Otherwise, there could be a lot of awkward silences.

Here are a few key lines for leaving politely:

Excuse me, I need to go right now.

Well, it’s been lovely talking to you.

Best of luck.

Let me give you my business card before I go.

Enjoy your time here!

As you say these phrases, hold out your hand for a handshake, making it clear that you’re ending the conversation.

English conversations don’t only involve a lot of talking. They also involve the use of nonverbal expressions to communicate what you mean.

Here are examples of body language used in English :

• Handshake.  When meeting someone for the first time, and after saying “Hello” followed by your name, hold out your hand. Wait for the other person to hold out their hand, then take it. Make sure your grip is firm (strong), but not too tight.
• Smile. Do this when you meet someone for the first time, when you agree with something they say and when you’re ending a conversation.
• Nod your head. English speakers typically nod their head (i.e., they move their head down and up quickly) when they want to show that they acknowledge or agree with what the other person is saying.

Before you meet someone new or go to a professional event, it may help to practice possible conversations as much as you need until you’re comfortable and happy with your answers.

It’s hard to know beforehand what a conversation will look like. But you can be prepared for the most common situations! The more comfortable you are answering the basics, the more confident you’ll be when the conversation goes somewhere you didn’t expect.

Amy: I like it a lot here! There’s always something new going on. Where are you from, Mr. Gordon?

Brian: Oh, you can just call me Brian. I was born in London, but I only lived in the UK for six months, so I really consider myself to be American.

Amy: Sounds exciting! I’ve never been to the UK. I’ve always wanted to visit, but I got promoted to manager at my job, and I’ve been very busy since. Where do you work?

Brian: I’ve been a freelance translator for 20 years. I have a passion for languages. What about you, Amy? Mr. Standford told me you work for a tech company downtown?

Mr. Standford: Glassdoor, can you imagine?

Amy: That’s right. I’ve been working at Glassdoor since 2020. I recently got an offer to come to San Francisco, and I didn’t want to waste such a huge opportunity.

You can customize this framework both for yourself as an individual and for the specific context. Perhaps most importantly, when you use this framework, you will be able to focus on others’ introductions, instead of stewing about what you should say about yourself.

Presenting yourself well means leaving a good first impression, which impacts the early stages of any relationship. You'll likely manage to change someone’s mind about you with time and patience if you have a rocky start. 

But if you can avoid misunderstandings from the beginning, it could set you up for opportunities you might otherwise miss.

For example, if you’re writing a letter of interest to a company you’d like to work for and forget to include personality traits and skills matching their organization values, they may move past your application. If you're wondering how to start an introduction about yourself, the best thing to do is keep it simple. Greet your conversation partner or audience, state your name, and mention why you're there, if relevant.

Let your audience know where you’re from and what you’ve been up to recently. Customize this to the situation. In some cases, you’ll discuss where you grew up and where you live now. In others, where you went to school and your profession will be your focus. 

In professional settings, mention any relevant skills and offer context by discussing why you’re mentioning or where you gained them. 

If this is a written introduction, like a cover letter or letter of intent , include skills mentioned in the job description to show you’ve prepared and know what’s required for the role. You can use an introduction to express to your community what you’d like to achieve and how you might get there. This subtle type of networking might help you gain help or land an opportunity you might’ve missed. 

To show your proactivity and sincerity, include examples of how you’re already taking action to realize these goals. For example, if you're interested in learning French, mention you're taking classes and have a language-exchange partner you meet once a week.

Try recording yourself saying the introduction to ensure you’re speaking articulately and clearly. You could also rehearse it with a friend to get constructive feedback . 

2. Tell a story

Instead of summarizing easily-accessible online information about you, engage your audience by sprinkling in new details and formatting your intro like a story . 

A great way to do this is to replicate the STAR interview method . This is the framework: 

• Situation : Establish your career path , starting with where you came from and a challenge you faced.
• Task : Define what your position and responsibilities were during this time.
• Action : Tell them how you confronted this challenge.
• Result : Share what you achieved and the insights you gained along the way.

You can shorten or lengthen this story, depending on your circumstances.

3. Communicate your values

Communication skills are essential to making a good first impression. Demonstrate your confidence with good posture, show your values by remaining sincere, and express your consideration for others by actively listening .

4. Showcase your personality

Even in professional settings, your audience wants to know what kind of person you are. A hiring manager cares about your qualifications but also wants to ensure you’ll get along with your coworkers and enjoy the company culture .
