It can take time for your file to be uploaded to Moodle and for it to be processed by Turnitin. This can be anywhere from a couple of minutes to up to 30 minutes per file, depending on the size and format of your file and your connection speed. Ensure you leave yourself adequate time to successfully submit your assignment, especially if you are submitting multiple large files.

If you delete an assignment submission, it is your responsibility to ensure that you then submit the correct file before the deadline. Your lecturer will be able to see if you have deleted an assignment but will not be able to access the file and it will not be counted as a submission. If you have uploaded the wrong file as part of your assignment you will be able to delete the file prior to the assignment deadline (unless the Submit assignment button has been enabled)

  • Select the link to Assignments from the Module Dashboard to open a list of all your Moodle assignments. Select the relevant assignment to open it.
  • On Grid format, open the Block drawer and navigate to the Activities block, select the link to Assignments.
  • Your  Submission status  page will open.
  • Select Remove submission  beneath the assignment description.
  • Select Continue on the confirmation pop-up.
  • Your submissions status will revert to "No submissions have been made yet". You will need to re-add your submission before the assignment due date.

To re-add your submission:

  • Select the assignment.
  • Select  Add submission.
  • Check the box next to the assessment declaration.
  • Upload or drag and drop your coursework into the File submissions field.
  • Scroll down and Save changes.
  • You will receive a notification to your City email stating that a submission has been added.

How can I find assignments which have not yet been graded?

To find ungraded submissions for a particular assignment, click on the assignment, then beneath the Grading Summary table, click the View/grade all submissions link. A table that includes a Grade column is displayed. Sort the table rows by clicking on the column title, in this case Grade . Assignment submissions will then be ordered according to their given grade, with ungraded submissions displayed at the top of the column.

Why can't I edit grades for assignment submissions?

If you edit assignment grades directly in the gradebook, an "overridden" flag is set, meaning that the grade can no longer be edited from the Grading summary page.

If required, the flag can be removed by turning editing on in the grader report , then clicking the edit grade icon, unchecking the overridden box and saving the changes.

How can a selected outcome be removed from an assignment?

To remove previously selected outcomes (which appear greyed out on the update assignment page):

  • Follow the Grades link from the Settings block in the course.
  • On the Grader report page, select the Categories and items tab.
  • Locate the assignment for which the outcome is to be removed. The outcome is listed directly below it.
  • Click the delete icon opposite the outcome.

Can students receive confirmation of submission via email?

Moodle allows the sending of a notification to the student when a student submits an assignment. This feature provides reassurance to the students that they have correctly submitted their assignments, especially when using features like draft submissions and file uploads.

Students can also return to the relevant Assignment and see confirmation in the Assignment's Submission status page.

Can I download all submitted assignments at once?

Users with the required permissions (e.g. those with a Teacher role) can click on the assignment and from the Settings block on the Grading summary page, access the 'Download all Submissions' link under 'Assignment administration'.

Can a teacher delete a student's assignment?

New feature in Moodle 2.7 !

Sometimes it is useful for a teacher to be able to edit or delete a student's assignment submission. Admins can give teachers the capability Capabilities/mod/assign:editothersubmission which will allow them to do this.

How can I export the rubric levels and criteria along with students' submissions?

There is a tracker entry for this if you'd like to vote! MDL-32089

Why do I not see the upload button when I switch my role to student to test out the assignment I made?

This feature is intended for teachers so that they can see how their course appears for students. It isn't a reliable view however, as some features do not display correctly when viewed by a teacher who has switched their role to a student. For that reason it is always preferable where possible to have a "test" student log in to use.

What happens if I restore a backup containing an assignment from Moodle 2.2 and older?

The assignment activity module was completely rewritten in Moodle 2.3. Thus, assignments from Moodle 2.2 and older (e.g. from Moodle 1.9) need to be upgraded. See the section 'Restoring course backups from Moodle 2.2 and older' in Assignment upgrade tool for details of what to do.

What's the point of the "Due date"?

Your use of the Allow submissions from and Due date settings will probably be dependent on the overall structure of your course. If you are facilitating an open ended course or a course with rolling enrolment, then you might find it easier to not apply the Allow submissions from and Due date settings. This arrangement will allow the learners to access the assignment according to their own schedule and progress within the course.

Alternatively, if you are working within a more structured format or adhering to a time line, the Allow submissions from and Due date settings are useful for keeping learners on schedule. Using the Allow submissions from setting will make it possible for learners to preview upcoming activities, while at the same time, prevent them from finishing the course in the first week and not returning for additional activities or information. Likewise, the Due dates help keep the learners from lagging too far behind and decrease the likelihood that the learner will become overwhelmed by having to complete several weeks worth of work at once.

How can I have different dates for different groups in the same assignment?

This is possible with Conditional activities . See MDL-16808 for an example but bear in mind that hiding an assignment after its due date will cause problems for students wishing to view their grade.

I can't access assignment submission comments from the grading screen

Do you have javascript disabled? You should be able to access comments from each individual user's grading page. See MDL-37770

What's the difference between 'Revert submission to draft' and 'Allow another attempt'?

'Revert submission to draft' is basically an 'undo' for students who have incorrectly submitted an assignment - it allows them to go back and change the files before submitting again.

'Allow another attempt' saves the submission and the feedback into the submission history and allows them to create a new submission (optionally based on their original submission), which will have its own feedback associated with it.

I see "Submissions closed" even though the submission and cut-off dates are in the future

This message will appear if you are trying an assignment as an administrator without actually being enrolled in the course, even thought the dates might look correct. Try with a student account of someone enrolled in the course.

Add a column (grade item), add a category, move grade items & categories, move multiple grade items at once, delete grade items & categories.

The Gradebook setup page in the Moodle gradebook (under Setup ) is used to rearrange grade items, add columns and categories, and customize how students' grades are calculated. The page displays settings for all grade items in a single table.

When you add any graded activity (such as an Assignment or Quiz ) to a course, Moodle automatically adds a corresponding grade item (column) to the gradebook. You can also create grade items (columns) not linked to Moodle activities by adding them manually on the Gradebook setup page.

To manually add a grade item:

Course management button (black background, white gear icon)

  • On the Course Management panel, under Grade , select  Gradebook Setup .
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Add grade item . The New grade item page will open.
  • In the Item name field, enter a name for the column. Use short, alphanumeric names;  do not use special characters, commas, ampersands, or quotes .
  • Value: A numerical value with a maximum and minimum
  • Scale:  Rate from a list of preset values ( note: the numeric value corresponding to different scale tiers do not necessarily align intuitively ). For more, see Standard & Custom Grading Scales in Moodle.
  • Text feedback only : Written feedback only; no numerical or aggregated value.
  • Letter: A letter value as defined by the instructor. See Letter Grades in Moodle .
  • In the Maximum grade field, set the maximum point value for the grade item.
  • (Optional) If you are using gradebook categories, you can select the category from the Parent Category dropdown menu.
  • When finished, click Save changes.

To add data to this column manually, click  Turn editing on  in the Grader report  (see Manually Edit Grades & Grade Overrides in Moodle ), or import grades from a spreadsheet (see Import Student Data into Moodle ). Note: When importing from a spreadsheet, you can also choose to add spreadsheet columns as new grade items rather than mapping them onto existing items within the Moodle gradebook.

Grade categories are useful for grouping assignments together, calculating subtotals, and making special calculations such as dropping the lowest grades.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click  Add category . The New category page will open.
  • Aggregation : The type of calculation for items in this category.
  • Exclude empty grades : (Selected by default) If checked, empty grades are not aggregated into grade calculations (i.e., Moodle assumes that the assignment has not yet been graded or assigned and therefore should not yet count against students). If unchecked, empty grades are calculated as "0."
  • Drop the lowest : Exclude a set number of grade items with the lowest value from being calculated in the category total.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes . The Categories and items page will open, displaying the new category.

To change the order of columns in the Grader report , move grade items into categories, or move categories:

Move icon, looks like a vertical line with an arrowhead pointing up and an arrowhead pointing down.

  • You can cancel your action at any time by clicking Cancel  at the bottom of the page
  • If you move a category that contains items and/or sub-categories, all of its contents will also be moved to the new location.

To move multiple grade items into a category at the same time:

screenshot of checkboxes and drop down

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Move selected items click Choose... to open the drop-down menu and select the name of a Category . The page will refresh with the items moved into the category.

Grade items and categories that were created in the gradebook can be deleted from the Gradebook Setup  page.

Note: Grade items associated with Moodle activities (such as an Assignment or Quiz ) can only be deleted from the gradebook by deleting the activity from your main course page.

  • Choose a manual grade item to delete.

Delete icon, looks like an "X".

  • On the Delete confirmation page, click Yes . Note : If you delete a category containing items, those items will not be deleted but will instead be moved into the parent category.

That grade item will now be removed from the Gradebook.

NOTE: You may have already noticed that if the item in the Gradebook was not added manually the option to delete does not exist. This is because Moodle will automatically create a grade item for things such as Assignments, Quizzes, or Forums. In order to remove these items you must remove the Quiz or Assignment from Moodle. If you do not wish to delete these from Moodle but also do not want them showing in your Gradebook you can instead keep these items hidden from students and set the weighting to zero so that they are not counted in your Gradebook.

Resubmitting to an assignment

Your instructor may allow you to overwrite your previous submissions until the due date and time set for the assignment. If overwriting is not enabled, your instructor must manually delete a previous submission to allow you to submit another file.

Only a single file may be submitted by a student user to any Turnitin assignment part in Moodle. Any second or subsequent submission will overwrite the original file submission in this assignment part. Multiple files cannot be uploaded to the same assignment part by a student.

Resubmitting a paper is handled in the same way you would submit to an assignment for the first time. View the  submissions guide for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

When selecting the Submit icon for resubmitting to an assignment, a warning pop-up will appear. This notifies you that, if available, The first four submissions will generate a new similarity report instantly. Any subsequent submissions will incur a 24-hour delay between reports generating.
