Diwali in Jainism

According to Harivamsha Purana, Diwali in Jainism is referred to as Dipika. The Diwali day also talks about the Mahavira, twenty-fourth Jain Tirthankara, and Mahavira attainment of Moksha. That’s why; the day is celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas by lighting up thousands of lamps at the golden temple, Amritsar.

Diwali in Buddhism

It is believed emperor Ashoka was so moved by the mass killing in the war of Kalinga held in 263 B.C that he converted to Buddhism. To mark this incident the day is regarded as Ashoka Vijayadashami.

Other Historical Significance

According to king ‘Harsha’, in the 7th century, Diwali is a festival where lamps were lit and gifts to newly engaged brides and grooms of the period were given as a token of love. Rajashekhara, an eminent Sanskrit poet under the court of Gurjara Pratiharas, described Diwali as the season of whitewashing, cleaning, decoration of houses, and the illumination of streets with oil lamp by the people of the town. On the agricultural front, Diwali is observed as a post-harvest festival for celebrating the rewards reaped through the harvest following the onset of the monsoon in the subcontinent region.

Decoding Ancient Inscriptions

In ancient times, Sanskrit was used as the main language for inscription. Excavation at various sites in India found Sanskrit inscription on stone and copper, indicating about Diwali. Terms like Dipotsava, Dipavati, Divali, and Divalige were used in the inscriptions.

 Also known as the festival of lights, Diwali is one of the most popular festivals, celebrated in India. Diwali is also known as ‘Deepavali’ in some parts of India, which when translated, literally means ‘ a string of lights’. The origins of this festival go back into ancient Hindu mythology, when Lord Rama returned back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile in a jungle, During this he fought with Ravana and emerged victoriously. It is also a common belief that Goddess Lakshmi visits people’s homes on Diwali night and blesses them with wealth and prosperity.

Preparations  for Diwali start a few days prior. Houses and shops are cleaned, whitewashed and renovated for this auspicious celebration. People go shopping for new clothes, ornaments, lights, diyas, sweets, etc. There is excitement in the air.  

On the day of Diwali, people dress up in new and bright clothes and ornaments , irrespective of whether they are young or old , or rich or poor. Women and girls design colourful rangolis on the floor. Fairy lights, candles and diyas are decorated all over the house-in rooms, balconies and gardens, which light up the house from outside and from within. Delicious sweets such as ‘jalebis’ , ‘gulab jamuns’,and ‘halwa’ are made and good wishes are exchanged among friends and family. Everyone is in a joyful spirit and in a mood for merrymaking.

 During the evening, people often burst a variety of firecrackers. However, in recent years, we have been made aware of the harmful effects of firecrackers, such as noise and air pollution. The bursting of firecrackers on Diwali has led to a decreased air quality in several places. As a result, the usage of firecrackers has now gone down significantly, and people are celebrating ‘Green Diwalis’ or ‘Eco-friendly Diwali’ in recent years.

In conclusion, Diwali is a cheerful occasion celebrated by people all across India for many centuries. It lights up not only houses but also people’s spirits. Such a festival brings people closer and builds a sense of unity among Indians.

Every festival of Delhi falls on the day of Kartik Purnima and this year, this auspicious occasion is falling on November 4, 2021.

It is believed that Lord Rama, King Dashratha’s son, along with Lord Lakshamana and Goddess Sita, made his way back home, after 14 years of exile. It is said that the city of Ayodhya was lit up with Diyas and Lamps to guide the lord back to the palace on the dark day of Kartik Amavasya. It is also said that Diyas denote positivity, happiness and the win of good over bad. 

The festival of Diwali starts with Dhanteras, followed by Choti Diwali and then Badi Diwali. It is considered auspicious to buy Silver, Gold and Metallic items on the day of Dhanteras The Choti Diwali 2022 is usually spent in preparations of the big day, distribution of sweets and gift to your loved ones. Diwali is celebrated with full pomp and show. People dress up in new and colorful clothes, clean and decorate houses with beautiful Rangolis, Lights and Flowers. They also distribute sweets and gifts to each other. On the night of Diwali, people worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for happiness and prosperity for their families and friends. 

Celebrations can also be doubled by sharing and caring for the less fortunate. One can donate sweets, new clothes, food etc to the underprivileged kids, homeless people or anyone who is in need of happiness. 

Some people also burn firecrackers on the day of Diwali. However, everyone should avoid this activity so as to lessen the air pollution and noise pollution around them. Loud Sounds and Bright Lights also cause trauma to animals and thus one should avoid these activities on the Day of Diwali.

It is said to celebrate his return, every hall, every room , every road witnessed the warmth and brightness of  millions of  diyas shining in the glory of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman.

Diwali is not a one day festival. It’s preparations start a month before. Each house is thoroughly cleansed, and decorated because it’s believed Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi come to visit the house on this occasion. People dressed up in new clothes worship their Gods, visit their loved ones and all previous enmities are turned into new friendships.

But the day after Diwali, north India is covered in smog because of the pollution caused by excessive burning of firecrackers and due to this, many people are even reluctant to step out of their home on Diwali, yet Diwali continues to be the most celebrated festival in India. The joy it brings is unmatchable. Diwali continues to be one of the Greatest gift India has given to this world.

Diwali Festival Essay for class or Grade 2

Diwali is the festival of lamps. It is the famous festival of India. Diwali is also known as Deepavali. It is the most famous festival in north India. Diwali falls in the month of October. But exact date varies from year to year. Diwali is the home coming of Lord Rama after defeating the demon  king Ravna. People wear new dresses. Gifts are given and taken. Children buy firecrackers. They also help their parent to decorate the house with lights and Diyas ( in Hindi script दिया  ). This Diwali we enjoyed car travelling to see the evening lighting decoration. My mother cooked delicious food.

Summertime is the most awaited time of any student’s life . It gives them a break from the scorching sun and blazing heat. The summer months are quite hot, however, students love them because they bring a sense of calmness due to the vacations. It frees them from the monotonous and dull routine of school and studies.

Most importantly, summer vacations give us a chance to explore new things. We can adopt new hobbies like painting, dancing, singing and more during this time. Furthermore, it gives us a chance to visit our grandparents or to someplace abroad. Summer vacations bring all types of fun, however, these particular summer vacations were the most memorable for me. My parents made me join a summer camp which was too much fun and then we visited our grandparents’ place.

Summer Camp

As the first day of my summer vacations started, I started getting bored easily. Mostly so because all my friends had gone to someplace or the other. My parents noticed this and decided to send me to a summer camp. Our school itself was organizing one in which my parents got me enrolled.

At first, I thought it would be of no use and would be equally boring. However, to my surprise, I was wrong. The summer camp was one of the best experiences of my life. I got the chance to indulge in so many activities and in fact, it was the first time where I discovered my talent for painting.

We got up early in the morning at 7 o’clock, despite no school. We had trainers who would teach us different things each day. On the first day, I got to learn karate, which was very amusing and helpful. Further, I learned how to play sports like basketball , table tennis, and volleyball.

Finally, came my most awaited part. We were taught painting and unique tips to master this art. I learned it quickly and started enjoying painting. My passion for painting began from this summer camp , and I will forever be indebted to it.

My Grandparents’ Place

After my summer camp ended, my whole family decided to visit my grandparent’s village . It is situated away from the city and is full of lush and greenery. I love spending time with my grandparents so I was very excited to visit their village.

We stayed there for over two weeks, and that throughout that time, I was at my best behavior. I used to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning to take a stroll with my grandfather. Then all the family members would get together to have breakfast full of healthy things and fresh fruits from the farm nearby.

In the evening, we would sit by our grandmother’s bed and listen to stories. Then, my siblings and I used to go to the terrace and play games. We would also gaze at their stars all night, as we did not get that in the city.

In short, this is how I spent my summer vacation. It was definitely one of the best times of my lives. I got to learn new things and spend valuable time with my grandparents. I feel blessed to have a loving family with whom I can enjoy my summer vacation.
