The market has only just opened yet people throng with anticipation to seek out what bargains and commodities they can hopefully discover.

A young teenager, dressed in skinny jeans and a crimson jumper, has earphones plugged in which offers her respite from a cacophony of deafening, insolent children surrounding her. Although she is thin and agile, she is unable to avoid the certain delinquents who think they are in a game of bumper cars. Engrossed in her music, she subdues any desire to lash out. Peace is restored to the area after the children, who swarmed like angry wasps, were halted by their parents.

An ecstatic man in his gazebo of merchandise beamed triumphantly as he sold more clothing paraphernalia than his rival counterpart. The young entrepreneur put Alan Sugar to shame; he was in his element. Because of the endless onslaught of unified shoppers flooding their way into his domain, he struggled to serve every person before they grew restless and impatient. When the customers were content with their newly bought merchandise, they quickly dissolved back into the sea of people.

Surreptitiously, a man delves into a welcoming pocket. He wore charcoal black trousers, polished boots and a navy hoodie which also veils his face. Sweat that was trickling down his neck and forming pools around his armpits suggests the clammy close proximity between people. The unfortunate self-absorbed drone remained completely oblivious to his plundered pockets.

As the sun sinks below the sky, shadows increasingly consume the market leaving behind a trail of gloom and dusk; this is especially is noticeable in the desolate alleyways. People hurriedly venture home, with the promise of their feet up – watching television, taking their newly acquired goods with them and leaving behind the monotonous grey tiles and corroded drains.

I love going to market, so yesterday when my mother told me to get her some eggs and other groceries, I obeyed gladly. Picking up a bag and some money, I cycled down to the nearest market. It was modest in size but catered to the daily needs of the people living close by.

As usual, there was a lot of activity going on in the shops, and the hawkers seemed to be doing good business too. I bought some chilli powder and a tin of cooking oil from the grocery store, then went to the chemist’s shop to buy my father’s medicine.

Thinking that I would leave the purchase of eggs for the end, I walked into the sweet-seller’s shop where a wonderful, rich aroma assailed my nostrils. I could not resist buying some hot jalebis which I devoured greedily. Then, wiping my sticky hands on my skirt, I went to the dairy shop and bought a packet of milk and a dozen eggs. Putting them carefully in my bag I came out to find that a man had settled down on the ground with his wares displayed on a sheet. He begged me earnestly to buy something from his colourful assortment of handkerchiefs, ribbons, soap-dishes and packets of safety-pins. I admired his goods but said I would come another day.

Picking up my bicycle from the end of the road, where I had parked it along with a whole lot of others, I hung my shopping bag over the handle and cycled home. I returned the left-over change to my mother, who jokingly remarked that since I had eaten jalebis my stomach must be full, so she needn’t cook any dinner for me.

I had heard a lot about the oldest and busiest market called ‘Chandni Chowk’ in Old Delhi now in Central North Delhi. I had never seen it. A few days before my brother’s marriage, when my mother was going for shopping, I insisted to accompany her. However, she tried her best to discourage me from coming but I requested hard. She even told me that there would be too much crowd and a child like me may be very tired. However, I still insisted.

We started on our journey. After about two hours on the road, we reached the famous Chandni Chowk. I had heard that it was the biggest and oldest market of Delhi. I saw hundreds of men rushing up and down everywhere. It appeared as if they were hurrying for an important mission. The sight of the crowd frightened me. I started questioning myself why I chose to come here. As we proceeded towards the shops, I was impressed. Different items were kept for sale and all the shops were too crowded.

Walking through the crowd, first we went to suiting and shirting shops where we had to make bulk purchases for my brother and gifting to friends and relatives. Each shop was crowded with customers. I was confused to see huge stocks of suiting and shirting piled up in each of these shops. In every shop, salespersons were busy with the customers. While shopping in one of the shops we got some relief from the pushing on the crowded lanes.

I was once again a bit fresh and now we were looking for a good jewellery shop. I was surprised to see so many jewellery shops. I had never imagined that expensive gold items could be available in so many shops. In these lanes, we spent nearly two hours glancing into one shop to another and making selections of different gold ornaments. Seeing the fast movement of the customers in and out of the shops, my mother said that these days the sale was more than usual because of the marriage season. Moreover, the festival season was also round the corner.

After having bought several bags of clothes, jewellery and other important things, we finally stepped out from the shop. Believe me, we were almost lost in those jammed lanes and by-lanes. Finally, we had to ask someone to guide us to the main road.

Such a visit was my first experience. I was impressed to see the shops full of items and different markets for different things. Although it was a tiring day, our shopping was wonderful. This was my most interesting visit to a market.

A market place is a very busy place where people go to buy articles of their needs. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. There is no other place in the area having so much brisk business as the market.

I always find a big crowd there. There are several shops, all decorated beautifully. Big shops look more attractive. Businessmen come here from far and wide for purchasing or selling their products. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, vegetables, etc.

Whenever I visit a market I find the hawkers shouting loudly to sell their goods. They try to attract the people by several names. Generally they sing songs in praise of their goods. They face hard competition because there are several hawkers selling the same article.

As the prices of the items are not fixed, the hawkers as well as the buyers do bargain. I watch these people who feel greatly satisfied after purchasing a thing at a minimum price from the hawkers.

The market is at peak in the evening. There is not a single shop where a big crowd is not seen. Everyone seems to be in hurry. There are jewellery shops which shine brightly in the light. Cloth shops and ready-made garment shops do great business during a festival.

The hotels and restaurants are also crowded with people. Some people are seen with plates of ‘chat’ others are seen enjoying cold drinks. There is flavour of all kinds in the surrounding area. It is very difficult to drive a car in a market place.

What to talk of a car or a motorcycle sometimes it becomes difficult even to walk. On the occasion of festivals like Diwali, Dussehra and Holi the situation becomes worse. It seems all the population of the country is on the road. There is great hustle and bustle. In between the cars and motorcycles, we see those carrying different articles for sale. They create great problems as sometimes they bring the traffic at a halt resulting in loud horns from the car-drivers.

The market is really a very noisy place. One can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another and enjoy fast foods. Some people are seen discussing politics in the light of their business.

Our markets are quite different from the markets of the western advanced countries. Our markets present a rural glimpse and fill us with a feeling that we belong to India whose soul lies in villages. It is really very pleasant to move in a market, particularly in the evening.

Market Place :Market Place  Last Sunday, I accompanied my mother to the central market to buy things that she needed for Diwali. When we arrived at the market, the whole market was well decorated and illuminated. All the shopkeepers had decorated their shops beautifully to welcome the customers.

Coming to the market simply before a festive season wasn’t a nice expertise. everybody had to shop for one thing or the opposite. Therefore, the prices of most commodities were quite high. We made our way carefully through various sections buying lights, diyas, decorative items, rangoli, flowers, etc. We also bought lots of sweets and another foodstuff. It was a crowded market. There were many street hawkers on both sides of the street. They were shouting and approaching us with requests to buy their stuff. It was getting difficult for us to avoid them.

The shopping bags we were carrying got heavier and heavier. So my mother asked me to stand at a corner with the bags. She instructed me not to move or talk to strangers. The crowd got thicker and thicker. Standing at the corner, I was observing the market. The noise and heat were increasing. I observed many parents facing difficulties in pacifying their children who were getting impatient in the crowded market.

In the market , I noticed ladies who were hurrying up as it was getting late. Some people were bargaining while others were just looking at things and moving on. There were so many fancy things that were attracting me. I was waiting for my mother to come. Soon she came with some more bags in her hands. I told her about the things that I wanted to buy.

We then moved on to the other street. From there, we bought a few gifts to be given to our family and friends on Diwali . Then we came to the street that was full of food outlets. We had some snacks and fresh juice. This made us feel fresh and energetic. We then went to see other shops selling decorative items. We bought different types of lamps and lights, artificial flowers, and many other things.

As we were almost done with all the shopping, we started walking towards our car. On the way too, my mother kept buying small stuff which she liked. We had so many bags with us that we couldn’t hold them all together. We kept the bags in the car and started driving back home. It took us a long time to get out of the market as we got stuck in a traffic jam.

My mother and I were completely exhausted. On reaching home, we breathed a sigh of relief.

It’s dusk outside: the normally bright, azure sky has turned the colour of charcoal, peppered with specs of iridescent silver, and the clearly cheap, and discoloured old lanterns littering the dusty surroundings of the ancient Bagajor market, give off a soft, and gentle dappled glow to the busy, cobbled streets below. A myriad of spices adorn a bright and overflowing market stall giving off a sweet redolent smell. People continue to bustle around the busy marketplace, browsing through an assortment of vibrantly coloured stalls, and occasionally buying an item that catches their eye.

There is a cacophony of sounds; it’s a combination of tourists twittering about the bargains they’ve managed to negotiate, and of stall owners noisily bartering the last of their greatly overpriced stock to unsuspecting passersby. Some as

tonishingly gorgeous teenage girls stand excitedly near a corner of a market stall brimming with eager excitement, all bedecked in their exquisitely made saris. One of the girls holds a silk sari; the colour of a stunning sunset, against her brilliantly bronzed skin, giving the impression her fiery red hair is aflame.

A pale faced adolescent boy, Walter Suman with coarse, and dull brown hair flopping messily over his acne covered forehead stands shyly close to a grimy stall with his parents, constantly wiping his clammy hands on his faded denim jeans watching the gorgeous girl like a hawk with his hopeful brown eyes almost popping out of his head. The sky turns a darker shade of charcoal as time goes on, and causes the rainbow covered stalls to cast colourful shadows into the gloomy night.

A handsome, well groomed man

dresses in an expensive Armani suit with loafers on his feet fidgets endlessly, whilst his beautiful blonde fiance “Oohs “, and “Aahs” over pieces of vintage jewellery lying on satin cushions, sparkling and calling to her from this damp and dimly lit stall. All this time an oversized, balding man stands in the dusty cobbled street hissing angrily towards his taxi driver screaming about the colossal amount of money he’s expected to pay for his, “short” journey.

His face, which was flushed a deep red due to the humidity and heat of the evening becomes a deeper and deeper red, until he becomes the same colour as the overripe tomatoes on the nearby vegetable stall.

He keeps his large, sweaty, left hand firmly on the pocket of his beige corduroy shorts where his wallet is kept, safeguarding his money in an animalistic manner, not willing to be parted from it by this bully and cheat: his wife stands flustered by his side rolling her eyes, checking her watch constantly, willing her husband to pay the fee and accept the deceit of the foreigner so they can go and enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants, from where the delicious aromas are wafting towards them in an inviting manner: this altercation has been going on for too long, her husband needs to calm down and relax: after all it is their tenth wedding anniversary celebration. Some stall owners are packing away their goods for the night yawning tiredly, and rubbing their sore shoulders as they do so.

They count their day’s earnings in a secretive, with their eyes darting back and forth to

make sure no-one’s watching. They look round their stalls wearily to make sure everything is packed away, and then, effortlessly, lock up their stalls with the ease of having done it for years. The sky is no longer peppered with iridescent silver, but is rather just filled with a charcoal colour as the oversized and balding man walks towards his spouse, obviously disturbed by this incident. They stroll off, hand in hand, the wife gently stroking his arm as they walk towards “Raja’s”, the best Indian restaurant in town.

However, then came junior high school. I believe this was when I began to really dislike English classes. Unfortunately for her, it never was and for the remainder of the class period, Ms. Spell would discuss with the class her obsession. In ninth grade, I had a Mr. Hoest (pronounced “Host”). For the remainder of my high school career, I had somewhat normal English teachers, however, I will always remember English teachers as being a little on the weird side.

Although it sounds as if these teachers may have added a little spice to my learning process, they also took away from the my learning and turned me off to English (as a subject). I suppose in the back of my mind, the teachers I had caused me to place a stereotype on them, making me look at English teachers as being in “la la land.” Then I would wonder “why do I have to learn so much about English (the subject)…….to be in ‘la la land’ too?” No thanks. English was additionally my worst subject. It was my worst, because it was my least liked. Ever since I began my formal study of the English language, I did not like practicing grammar or analyzing essays. If I was going to read something, I wanted it to be because I wanted to read it, not because my grade was dependent upon it.

Surprisingly, there were some instances where I did enjoy writing in high school, just not in English class. Through high school, history had always been my favorite subject. Around my junior year, writing in history became just as common as writing in English class. For history, I wrote on topics that interested

me. I did not always have prior knowledge of the topic I discussed, but I would enjoy researching and learning about that topic, so that writing on it was enjoyable.

During my junior year, I learned a lot about writing. I was not only writing a lot for History, but also for English. The beauty of this situation was that I was taking both Advanced Placement English and Advanced Placement History. This was good because both of my A.P. teachers got together and decided to offer a number of “dual credit” writing assignments. This would allow us to write a history paper (the content) while fulfilling English requirements (the form), thus turning in one paper for two assignments. This was different from the past for two reasons: one, I love history and writing about it came fairly easily; and two, by writing about history and than having the opportunity to incorporate history with different styles of writing and techniques helped me learn more about writing. It also gave me the opportunity, in a way that I have never experienced, to learn to write in a more effective way then in the past. I recognize that this was beneficial to my English education, and was fortunate that I was able to learn and practice my writing skills in such a manner.

Now that I am in college, I reflect back to those days when I could not figure out why English was so important to learn. English: speaking it, reading it, and writing it are very important. Just knowing how to do it won’t hack it.

One must be able to do it well, and correctly too. Why is being a good rhetorician so detrimental?

Let’s take getting a job for example. When calling to inquire about the job, one must be able to speak in a professional and educated manner. Then comes the important step of submitting a cover letter and resume. Correct grammar, punctuation, as well as being able to make a good impression through the letter’s copy is also important when it comes to first impressions. Once in the interview, knowing how to express oneself through the verbal word becomes most important.

That’s where reading comes in to play – vocabulary knowledge and application. In the job interview, one needs to be able to express themselves through an educated vocabulary. This “educated vocabulary” is acquired through a lot of reading. Not to mention the fact that a well rounded vocabulary makes a very good impression.

For myself, I plan on attending law school, and possibly becoming a lawyer. Strong English skills are important here as well. All of the correspondence to and from clients, as well as judges, other lawyers, and businesses, as in any profession, needs to be written well. Then there is the litigation side. In a courtroom, a lawyer only has so much time and so many opportunities to get his point across. No time can be wasted on poor speaking abilities. A lawyer must know what he needs to say, and deliver it as effectively and efficiently as possible, using correct vocabulary, grammar, and diction. Communication skills in today’s job market are a needed essential.

I have been getting an education in the English language for the last eighteen years. I have enjoyed learning proper English, and I have absolutely hated it. Now as a freshman in college, I still dislike the subject of English.

However, I do recognize the importance of being able to read, interpret, speak, and write correctly in society today.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

We develop a model of capital accumulation in an open economy that imports investment goods from large foreign firms with market power. We model investment-goods producers as a dynamic oligopoly and characterize a Markov Perfect Equilibrium with a Generalized Euler Equation. We use this optimality condition to analyze the joint evolution of investment, prices, and markups. The markup on investment goods decreases as the economy accumulates capital toward its steady state, generating a state-dependent capital adjustment cost. We analyze the role of commitment to future production of investment goods for the dynamics of markups and investment. We use a calibrated version of the model to simulate the effects of shocks to the demand for durable goods and semiconductors during the post-2020 world recovery. Finally, we perform counterfactual analyses on the effects of expanding the production capacity. The model highlights the separate roles of increasing marginal costs—akin to capacity constraints—and market power.
