Introduction ( परिचय )

It’s said, there’s no knowledge, no wisdom without your guru . There are books all around the world, we can easily have access to them, but the way and things that a teacher brings closer to our prism of perspective are way too far to compare with anything.

कहा जाता है कि बिना गुरु के किसी ज्ञान, किसी बुद्धिमता का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता है। दुनिया भर में हर जगह किताबें उपलब्ध हैं, हम आसानी से उन्हें पा सकते हैं, लेकिन एक अध्यापक जिस तरह से विचारों को हमारे सोचने- समझने के तरीके के सामने रखते हैं, वह अतुलनीय होता है।

Teachers enlighten our minds, closely associated with us remind us of things we could do with our lives, books and potentials. We might read out a thing from the book and completely understand it but that doesn’t suffice the presence of a teacher. We all require someone to guide.

अध्यापक हमारे दिमाग को तेज करते हैं। वे हमारे साथ रहकर हमें उन लक्ष्यों की याद दिलाते हैं जिन्हें हम अपने जीवन, पुस्तकों और क्षमताओं के सहारे पा सकते हैं। हम पुस्तक से किसी चीज़ को तो पढ़ सकते हैं और इसे पूरी तरह से समझ सकते हैं लेकिन एक अध्यापक की मौजूदगी को पूरा नहीं कर सकते है। हम सभी को किसी न किसी के मार्गदर्शन की आवश्यकता होती है।

My Favourite Teacher ( मेरे पसंदीदा अध्यापक )

I have various teachers in school, different teachers for every subject. I like all of them, all of them have a different way of teaching, talking, checking our notebooks and dealing with the subject. There are times I’m scared of telling people that I don’t get a few concepts in Mathematics, but I’m glad that I can go up to my teacher of Maths. He’s a nice person and tells me Maths is a tricky subject, but if I get the trick It would become easier.

मेरे स्कूल में कई अध्यापक हैं, विभिन्न विषयों के लिए विभिन्न अध्यापक हैं। मुझे वे सभी पसंद हैं, उन सभी के पढ़ाने, बातचीत करने, हमारी नोटबुक को चेक करने और किसी विषय के बारे में समझाने का एक अलग तरीका है। कई बार मैं लोगों को यह बताने से डरता हूं कि मुझे गणित (मैथ्स) की कुछ अवधारणाएं (कॉन्सेप्ट्स) नहीं आते, लेकिन मुझे खुशी है कि मैं इसके बारे में जानने के लिए अपने मैथ्स के टीचर के पास जा सकता हूँ। वह एक अच्छे इंसान है और मुझे बताते हैं कि मैथ्स एक ट्रिकी विषय है, लेकिन अगर ट्रिक को समझ लिया जाए तो ये आसान लगने लगेगा।

Out of all the teachers, I like my English teacher the most. Her name is Divya. She is a new teacher in our school. She says, she has taught in many other schools of the city as well. She has come across various work cultures, new students, new people, new school buildings etc. She admits that she loves teaching and doesn’t regret to choose this profession, this is the only thing that doesn’t bore her.

सभी अध्यापकों में से, मुझे अपनी इंग्लिश की अध्यापक सबसे अधिक पसंद हैं। उनका नाम दिव्या है। वह हमारे स्कूल के लिए एक नई अध्यापक है, वह कहती हैं कि उन्होंने शहर के कई अन्य स्कूलों में भी पढ़ाया है, उनका विभिन्न प्रकार की संस्कृतियों, नए स्टूडेंस, नए लोग, नए स्कूल बिल्डिंग आदि से मिलना हुआ है।वह स्वीकार करती है कि उन्हें पढ़ाना बहुत पंसद है और इस पेशे को चुनने के लिए पछतावा नहीं करती है, यह एकमात्र ऐसी चीज है जो उन्हें बोर नहीं करती है।

She comes up with new poems even out of our texts and explains them to us in great detail. She has got a great sense of humour. She plays games with us in the free period, she is very friendly and doesn’t let the teacher-student relationship barrier hurt the students.

यहाँ तक कि वह हमारे पाठ्यक्रम के बाहर से भी नई कविताओं को लेकर आती हैं और उन्हें हमें विस्तार से समझाती हैं। उनका सेंस ऑफ ह्यूमर बहुत अच्छा है। वह खाली समय में हमारे साथ गेम खेलती हैं, वह बहुत ही मिलनसार हैं और वह शिक्षक और विधार्थी के बीच की दूरी को बनाकर भी हमें सहज महसूस कराती हैं।

Her Nature ( उनका स्वभाव )

She’s very humble, friendly and interactive and that’s why everyone likes her. She accepts all of us with our imperfections as well, with our grammatical mistakes and spelling errors. She’s very open to new opinions and recommendations.

वह बहुत ही विनम्र, मिलनसार, विचार-विमर्श करने वाली (इंटरैक्टिव) हैं और इसी वजह से हर कोई उन्हें पंसद करता है। वह हमें हमारी सभी कमियों के बावजूद स्वीकार करती हैं, ग्रामर की गलतियाँ हों या फिर स्पेलिंग मिस्टेकस । वह नए विचारों और सुझावों का खुले दिल से स्वागत करती हैं।

She says, she has been an ardent reader since school and encourages us to do the same. She tells us that she wants to study more so that she can engage more in teaching and she could then come up with more diverse and better ideas. She says that Education is the most golden tool of growth and encourages us to learn as much as we can, from all the possible sources possible.

वह कहती हैं कि अपने स्कूल के समय से ही वह एक उत्साही पाठक (पढ़ने वाली) रही हैं और हमें भी ऐसा करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करती हैं। वह हमें बताती हैं कि वह और अधिक पढ़ाई करना चाहती है ताकि टीचिंग के क्षेत्र में और अधिक काम कर सके और फिर ज्यादा विविधता और बेहतर विचारों के साथ पढ़ा सके। वह कहती हैं कि ‘शिक्षा’ विकास के लिए सबसे सुनहरा साधन है और यह हमें सभी मुमकिन स्रोतों (सोर्सज) से जितना संभव हो सके उतना सीखने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करता है।

My Teacher’s best thing is her teaching style, her elegance, her interactivity, her openness to new ideas or thoughts. There are many other great things about her, I’m lucky having found her.

मेरे अध्यापक की सबसे अच्छी चीज है उनके पढ़ाने का तरीका, उनकी शिष्टता, उनके बातचीत करने का तरीका, नई सोच और विचारों के प्रति उनका खुलापन। उसके बारे में कई अन्य अच्छी चीजें हैं, मैं उनका साथ पाकर भाग्यशाली समझता हूँ।

A teacher has very influential energy to pass with his/her students. Students are generally imitative, they imitate what their teachers do, we similarly follow our teachers’ ideas and paths. They’re true path guiders, their role is very crucial to one’s development and becoming one individual.

एक अध्यापक के पास अपने स्टूडेंटस को देने के लिए बहुत प्रभावशाली ऊर्जा होती है। स्टूडेंट सामान्यतः अनुसरण करने वाले होते हैं, उनके अध्यापक जो भी करते हैं वे उसका अनुसरण करते हैं, हम भी बिल्कुल इसी तरह अपने शिक्षक के विचारों और रास्तों पर चलते हैं। वे सच्चे पथ प्रदर्शक होते हैं, उनकी भूमिका हमारे विकास में और हमारे व्यक्तित्व को बनाने में अति महत्वपूर्ण होती है।

हर साल, भारत डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन की जयंती को उनके योगदान और उपलब्धियों के प्रति श्रद्धांजलि के रूप में राष्ट्रीय शिक्षक दिवस मनाता है। 5 सितंबर, 1888 को जन्मे डॉ. राधाकृष्णन ने न केवल भारत के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में कार्य किया, बल्कि एक विद्वान, दार्शनिक और भारत रत्न से सम्मानित भी थे।

पहले के समय में हमारे देश में शिक्षक को इस तरह का सम्मान दिया जाता था, परन्तु आज के समय में शिक्षक और छात्र दोनो ही बदल गये है। पहले के समय में शिक्षण एक पेशा ना होकर एक उत्साह और एक शौक का कार्य था, पर अब यह मात्र एक आजीविका चलाने का साधन बनकर रह गया है। लेकिन मुझे लगता अभी भी सब कुछ खत्म नही हुआ है। जब भी मैं छात्रों को शिक्षक दिवस मनाते हुए देखता हूँ मैं काफी भावुक हो जाता हूँ और इसके साथ ही काफी प्रसन्न भी महसूस करता हूँ। यह सब देखकर मुझे लगता है अभी भी हमारे दिलो में शिक्षको के लिए विशेष स्थान है।

मेरे शिक्षक पर निबंध – 1 ( 250 – 300 शब्द).

इस बात से को इनकार नही कर सकता है कि स्कूल के पहले दिन से लेकर कालेज के आखिरी दिन तक वह हमें पढ़ाते है हमारी कमियां खोजते है और हमें शिक्षा देते है। इसके अलावा वह हमारे व्यक्तित्व का भी निर्माण करते है अगर संक्षिप्त में कहे तो वह हमारे भविष्य का निर्माण करते हैं।

शिक्षक हमारे भविष्य के निर्माता

वैसे तो कई रिश्ते है जिनका हमारे ह्रदय में विशेष स्थान होता है और मुझे विश्वास है कि उनमें से एक है शिक्षक का रिश्ता जो हमारे लिए सबसे प्रिय है। खासतौर से वह जो हमारे साथ सख्ती से पेश आते थे और हमें गलतियों पर सजा दिया करते थे।

जैसे-जैसे हम बड़े होते जाते है यह नफरत प्रेम में बदल जाता है, क्योंकि हम अपने पेशे में डांट का महत्व महसूस करते है। कबीर दास ने शिक्षक के कार्य को नीचें के पंक्तियो में बखूबी समझाया है।

किताबी ज्ञान देने के अलावा एक शिक्षक बच्चों को नैतिक ज्ञान भी देते हैं। जो कि कई बार औपचारिक रुप से होता है तो कई बार साधरण रुप से, जब मैं एक बच्चा था तो एक बार मैने अपने एक दोस्त से बिना पूछे उसका रबड़ ले लिया और उसे लौटाना भूल गया। इस पर मेरे दोस्त ने मेरे शिक्षक से जा कर कह दिया कि मैने उसका रबड़ चुराया है। इस बात पर मैं रोने लगा और कहा मैं उससे पूछना भूल गया था, मैंने चोरी नही की, इस बात पर मेरे शिक्षक ने मुझसे कहा की “मैं तुम्हारी बात पर यकीन करता हूँ, लेकिन तुम्हे दूसरे की वस्तु लेने से पहले पूछना चाहिए था” तब से लेकर आज तक उनके इस बताये गए पाठ को मैं कभी नही भूला।

छोटी-छोटी चीजे जो विद्यालयों में सिखायी जाती है, जैसे कि तमीज, झूठ ना बोलना, हमेशा धन्यवाद और कृपया कहना, कक्षा में आने पर या कुर्सी पे बैठने से पहले आज्ञा लेना आदि, भले ही यह चीजे काफी छोटी प्रतीत होती हो पर मेरा यकीन मानिए यह छोटी चीजे आसानी से परिस्थितियों को तोड़ और जोड़ सकती है।

जब मैं 10वीं कक्षा में था, तो मुझे समझ नही आ रहा था कि मुझे कौन सा विषय चुनना चाहिए विज्ञान या वाणिज्य, मैं जितने लोगो से सलाह लेता उतना ही ज्यादे भ्रमित हो जाता। अंत में इस विषय में मैने अपने शिक्षक से सलाह ली और “उन्होंने मुझसे कहा अपने दिल की बात सुनो तुम्हे अपना उत्तर मिल जायेगा” और वास्तव में मुझे मेरा उत्तर मिल गया।

एक शिक्षक एक दोस्त

मुझे इस बात का पूरा विश्वास है कि कोई व्यक्ति कितना भी प्रतिभासाली क्यों ना हो, अगर वह भावनात्मक रुप से अच्छा नही है तो वह अच्छा प्रदर्शन नही कर सकता है। अगर एक छात्र अपने शिक्षक को अपना मित्र मान ले तो मेरा विश्वास मानिए वह अपने भावनात्मक बाधाओं को आसानी से पार कर जायेगा।

कुछ व्यक्ति ऐसे होते है, जो आपको कभी धोखा नही देते है। उनमें से एक है आपके शिक्षक, इससे कोई फर्क नही पढ़ता है कि आप उनके विषय में क्या सोचते है वह हमेशा ही आपके शुभ चिंतक रहेंगे।

ऐसा ही एक वाकया मैं आप लोगो के सामने रखना चाहूँगा, जब मैं स्कूल में था। हमारे एक गणित के शिक्षक थे जो हमेशा हमारे साथ काफी कड़ाई के साथ पेश आते थे, वह अक्सर हमे डांटते थे और पिटाई भी किया करते थे। दूसरे शब्दो में कहे तो उन्होंने हमारा जीना मुश्किल कर दिया था। एक दिन इन सब बातो को लेकर हमारा धैर्य जवाब दे गया और हममे उनकी मोटरसाईकल में आग लगा दी, जिसके बाद इस मामले की एफ.आई.आर दर्ज हुई और जब हमारे एक सहपाठी को धमकाया तो उसने कुछ लोगो के नाम बता दिये और जब पुलिस उन लड़को को गिरफ्तार करने आयी तो हमारे गणित के शिक्षक ने अपनी शिकायत वापस ले ली।

हम में से किसी ने भी ऐसा सोचा भी ना था, हम उनके पास गये और उनसे क्षमा मांगी और उनसे पूछा कि उन्होंने अपनी शिकायत वापस क्यों ले ली उन्होंने जो कहा अब वह मैं आपको बताने जा रहा हूँ, उन्होंने कहा “एक विद्यार्थी के रुप में आपसे गलतियां होती है और मेरा काम है उन्हे ठीक करना, लेकिन मैं तुम लोगो को ऐसी सजा नही दे सकता जो तुम्हारा भविष्य खराब कर दे और तुम्हे एक अपराधी बना दे, इसलिए मैने अपनी शिकायत वापस ले ली।” उनकी इस बात पर हम काफी रोये और अपने इस किये के लिए उनसे माफी मांगी, वास्तव में यही शिक्षक का असली चरित्र होता है।

अंत में मैं यहि कहूंगा कि एक शिक्षक वह व्यक्ति होता है जो हमें सही मायनों में एक पूर्ण इंसान बनाता है।

मुझे इस बात का पुरा भरोसा है कि आप सबको भी यही लगता होगा की एक नर्सरी के छात्र का उसके शिक्षक/शिक्षिका के साथ एक ऐसा विशेष संबंध होता है, जिसे परिभाषित नही किया जा सकता है। मेरे पास इसके लिए सिर्फ एक ही शब्द है वो है जादुई, अगर वह मुझसे कुछ करने के लिए कहा करती थी, तो मैं कभी मना नही कर पाता था। एक बार मैंने उनसे मासूमियत से पूछा “मैडम क्या आप मुझे पसंद करती हैं?” इस पर उन्होंने मुझे जवाब दिया कि “हाँ बिल्कुल” उस दिन मुझे काफी प्रसन्न्ता हुई।

एक दिन कुछ कारणों से मैं नाराज हो गया और घर पर खाना नही खा रहा था। मेरे माता-पिता ने हर कोशिश की पर उन्हें कोई कामयाबी नही मिली, अंत में मेरे पिता जी ने मेरे स्कूल टीचर को फोन किया और मुझे उनसे बात करने के लिए कहा। उन्होंने मुझसे कहा कि “धीरेन्द्र………” मैंने तुरंत जवाब दिया “हाँ मैम मैं बिल्कुल भी गुस्सा नही हूँ और अभी खाना खा लूंगा और अपना होमवर्क भी करुंगा………” उनका मुझ पर कुछ इस तरह का प्रभाव था।

जब मैं छठवीं कक्षा में था तब मैंने एन.सी.सी में शामिल हुआ था। मुझे याद है कि हमारे प्रशिक्षक एक सख्त इंसान थे और हम उन्हे गब्बर पुकारा करते थे। आज मेरे अंदर जो भी अनुशासन और संघर्षशीलता है वह उन्ही के बदौलत है। उन्होंने हमे बचने के तरीके और कई चीजे सिखायी। हमारे बीच का यह रिश्ता डर पे टिका हुआ था। यह बिल्कुल शोले फिल्म के गब्बर सिंह के आतंक के तरह था।

वह जब भी चिल्लाया करते थे “लड़को क्या तुम भूखो हो?” हम जवाब दिया करते थे “नही सर”, इसके बाद वह फिर से पूछा करते थे “क्या तुम थके हो” और फिर से जवाब दिया करते थे “नही सर”। अब मैं जब भी थका महसूस करता हूँ मुझे उनकी वह चिल्लाहट याद आ जाती है और मेरा शरीर फिर से स्फूर्ति से भर जाता है।

किशोर छात्रों और उनके शिक्षकों के मध्य का रिश्ता

किशोरावस्था का समय जिदंगी का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण समय माना जाता है। सामान्यतः इस समय में शिक्षक और छात्र का रिश्ता समझ, प्रेम और आकर्षण पर टिका होता है। किशोरावस्था के बच्चो को संभालने के लिए एक शिक्षक के लिए यह सबसे जरुरी होता है कि वह काफी परिपक्व हो, नही तो इस बात की ज्यादे संभावना है कि हर चीज उलट-पुलट हो जायेगी।

यह उम्र ऐसी होती है जब मनुष्य के मन में विद्रोह भरा होता है। मेरा मतलब है कि एक किशोर को कोई काम करने से जितना भी रोका जाता है वह उसके प्रति उतना ही ज्यादे ही आकर्षित होता है। इसलिए एक अच्छे शिक्षक के लिए यह काफी आवश्यक है कि कड़ाई भी काफी सोच-समझ करे क्योंकि ज्यादे कड़ाई भी चीजो को बिगाड़ सकती है।

जब मैं आठवीं कक्षा में था, तो मेरी अंग्रेजी काफी खराब थी। इसलिए मैं सही उत्तर नही लिख पाता था। एक दिन मेरे अंग्रेजी के अध्यापक ने मुझे बुलाया और उनके हाथ में मेरी साहित्य की एक कापी थी मुझे लगा कि आज मुझे फिर से डांट पड़ने वाली है या फिर उससे भी बुरा मेरे माता-पिता को बुलाया जायेगा। लेकिन भगवान का शुक्र था कि ऐसा कुछ भी नही हुआ, उन्होंने मुझसे विनम्रता से मेरी समस्या के बारे में पूछा पर मैं डर के मारे इस विषय में उन्हे कुछ बता नही पाया। जब मुझे लगा कि वह मुझे नही डाटेंगी तब मैने उन्हे अपनी समस्या के बारे में बताया उसके बाद उन्होंने मुझ पर काफी मेहनत की और आज यह उन्हीं के मेहनत तथा मेरे दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति का नतीजा है, जिससे मेरी अंग्रेजी काफी सुधर गयी। इस पुरे घटना को आपको का बताने का मतलब यह है कि अगर वह मुझे डांटती या सजा देती, तो मुझे इस बात का पूरा भरोसा है परिस्थितियां विपरीत हो जाती।

मैं भी अपने छात्रों के साथ ऐसा ही करने का प्रयास करता हूँ, पर कई बार परिस्थितियां काफी पेचीदा हो जाती है। उदाहरण के लिए, एक बार मेरी एक छात्रा ने मुझसे पुछा “सर मैं आपको कैसी लगती हूँ” इस पर मैने हसते हुए कहा “तुम एक अच्छी लड़की हो।”

अंत में मैं यही कहूँगा की एक शिक्षक और छात्र का रिश्ता दुनिया भर के सबसे अच्छे रिश्तो में से एक है, क्योंकि यह कई रिश्तो का मिश्रण होता है।

It is mostly what we learn at school that helps us throughout our lives when we have to make important decisions and perform other crucial tasks.

Having a particular teacher that you are especially comfortable with can be a massive advantage as it can help you move through your school years in an easier way. A good teacher can also act as a mentor, guiding you all through your life, even apart from just academics.

I am a student of 10th Class of a reputed private school. There are many great teachers in my school but everyone has that one teacher they are especially grateful to. Likewise, my favourite teacher is Mr Manish Khandelwal Sir. Manish Sir teaches us Maths, and he has a really attractive personality. He is very polite and humble and we all the students love him. He is also a person trusted the most by parents and teachers, as he constantly strives in creating a balanced environment in working hard at academics and having fun doing so.

Qualities of My Favorite Teacher

Manish Sir is tall and quite good looking. He is 32 years old and very experienced. His way of teaching is excellent. He believes in simple living and high thinking. All the students love him for his superb way of teaching and humble behaviour. He has an experience of 9 years in education, and he has done masters in Mathematics. He easily solves complicated mathematical equations.

He has a unique way of explaining his methods of solving problems. This way, he makes even the most complex of problems look simple and makes it very easy to understand for all students. He has all favourite teacher qualities in him, and has an exceptional amount of patience, which is one of the reasons why everyone considers him as the best teacher. He explains every question or doubt with so much patience and clarity and makes sure you understand them thoroughly.

He has an excellent command of English and unlike most teachers out there for whom writing impositions, formulas and theorems are important, he focuses more on logical reasoning rather than memorising complicated equations. He is very disciplined and punctual and ensures that we follow these principles as well. He understands the importance of time and always comes on time. He possesses many of such appreciable qualities which are commendable and highly appreciated by students who want to pursue these qualities as well.

He is very enthusiastic but he is not too pushy and allows us to make the decisions on our own. He perfectly understands the balance between study and extracurricular activities and helps us stay on track with both. He believes in the overall development of the students and thus encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.

He prepares students for Maths olympiads so that their confidence can be boosted and they excel in a complex subject like Maths. Under his guidance, many students have won prizes in Maths olympiads, and even I have scored the highest marks securing the first position in many Maths competitions. He is an asset to our school as he has played a massive role in improving the overall image of our school including co-curricular and academic aspects and we students are fortunate to have him.

What Makes Him My Favourite Teacher?

Manish Sir is my favourite teacher because he is very humble, kind and polite. I love his way of teaching. He loves all students and doesn't believe in punishing them. He focuses more on conceptual clarity than burdening students with excessive homeworks. He never scolds students and never expresses his concerns in the form of anger. Instead, he talks to the students personally in a calm manner, in a way that helps us improve and wants to put in more effort.

He asks students to be honest with him and always gives equal attention to all the students. He never makes fun of any students and gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or equation, he puts extra effort to make him understand, and never tends to lose patience. He calmly explains no matter how many times he has to repeat the same question or statement. He is focused on making us understand every concept with utmost clarity and that is the reason why all students love him.

One of my most favourite qualities of Manish sir is that he keeps track of every student in the class; how they are performing or what are the things they are good at. He constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class and helps them to improve themselves and guides them throughout the learning process. He is one of the best teachers in our school who keeps constantly motivating their students and guiding them in all spheres of life. Manish sir is especially known for not showing even the tiniest amount of favouritism. He treats all his students with an equal amount of fondness and love and cares for every one of us deeply.

He is very experienced and full of life. He tends to keep the entire class on a positive note and never exhibits any behaviour that deteriorates other people. He is concerned about people’s feelings and never hurts anybody. He is very sober and has a great sense of humour. His mathematical knowledge is very vast. Apart from being good at mathematics, he also preaches the importance of having sound knowledge in English and literature.

He loves reading books and always encourages students to spare some time to read novels instead of doing mindless activities like watching tv or playing video games. He also advises us to get more physical activity and play with other people our age and interact more as it would improve communication. He advises students to pursue their hobbies or interests. He understands students' problems and always provides them with a helping hand. He explains everything with examples and makes every concept so interesting to learn for students.

We students love to attend his class because he is very understanding. He covers each topic in detail and gives his full attention in class. He would be the first one to notice if even a single student loses track or starts dozing off. He would just suggest an alternative method or a simpler explanation instead of blaming the student for not paying enough attention to the class. He knows how to draw students' attention in class. He never assigns us too much homework, and after class, he provides us with regular assignments to assess our understanding of a particular topic.

The assignments are often designed to be more informative and research-oriented rather than just making us write down questions or paragraphs from the book and memorise them. By actually going through related articles and books, we gain a greater amount of knowledge and this way, we tend to remember what we learn for a long time as well.

In case if any student fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in a particular chapter, he doesn't shout at them but instead makes them understand the concept again. This way, we students understand that whatever he is doing is for our own benefit and we tend to work harder to improve ourselves. These are a few of the things he does that makes him different from the other teachers and appears approachable to everyone around him. I have never seen a humble and polite teacher like him, and one day I will try to be like him in my career.

Manish Sir is not just a great teacher but also my ideal person. He has all the favourite teacher qualities, and everyone loves him. I am lucky to be his student, and I will always follow his principles in my life. Even after leaving this school, he will remain my favourite teacher, and I will never forget him. I will always remember what he has taught me through example, and I will try to be a great person like him in the future.

तभी उस विद्यार्थी के मन में शिक्षा के प्रति दिलचस्पी पैदा होगा । एक ईमानदार शिक्षक बिना किसी भेदभाव के हर छात्र के अंदर विद्या प्राप्त करने के लिए उसके प्रति सच्ची लगन पैदा करता है । यदि मैं शिक्षक होता तो शिक्षा के प्रति बच्चों की उदासी को दूर करने की कोशिश करता ।

देश के अंदर सभी विद्यार्थियों को शिक्षा प्राप्त करने पूर्ण अधिकार है । एक शिक्षक अपने विद्यार्थी को पूरी लगन के साथ पढ़ा लिखा कर इस काबिल बना देता है की वो आने वाले अपने भविष्य को उज्ज्वल बना सके । आज के समय में शिक्षा का महत्व बढ़ते जा रहा है । इसलिए हर व्यक्ति को शिक्षित होना बहुत ही आवश्यक है ।

शिक्षा के प्रति विद्यार्थियों में लगन पैदा करना

यदि मई शिक्षक होता तो सर्वप्रथम सभी छात्रों के अंदर विद्या के प्रति लगन पैदा करता । जिसके वजह से हर बच्चे को पढाई करने में कोई उदासी न दिखे । मैं सभी छात्रों को शिक्षा के प्रति नकारात्मक भाव को जड़ से खत्म कर देता । ताकि सभी बच्चों में पढाई के समय उत्साह व आनंदपूर्वक के साथ शिक्षा का मजा ले सके ।

शिक्षक द्वारा पढ़ाने का तरीका

हर शिक्षक को पढ़ाने का तरीका अलग – अलग होता है । यदि मैं शिक्षक होता तो अपने द्वारा शिक्षा को एक अलग ही स्तर पर ले जाकर विद्यार्थियों को समझाने का कार्य करता । क्योंकि हमारी शिक्षा तभी सफल होगी जब बच्चों को अच्छे से समझ आये ।

यदि हमारे द्वारा पढाये गये विषयों में छात्रों की शंका दूर नहीं हो रहा है उसको बोरिंग महसूस हो रहा है । तो हमें निश्चय ही अपने पढ़ाने का तरीका बदलना चाहिए । कभी – कभी बच्चों के हिसाब से हमें अपने पढ़ाने के तरीके को व्यवस्थित करना चाहिए ।

अगर हम किसी में पढ़ा रहे है तो वहाँ के माहौल को ऐसा बनना चाहिए की कोई भी विद्यार्थी बिना किसी भय या हिचकिचाहट के अपने सवाल का उचित समाधान प्राप्त कर सके । हमें एक जिम्मेदार शिक्षक होने के नाते सभी विद्यार्थियों पर नजर रखनी होगी ।

विद्यार्थियों के लिए सर्वाधिक विकास

मैं अपनी कक्षा के सभी विद्यार्थियों को एक परिवार की तरह रखता । उन सभी छात्र – छात्राओं को अपने छोटे भाई व बहन की तरह मानता । मैं सबसे ज्यादा अनुशासन पर ध्यान देता । जिससे सभी विद्यार्थी अपने घर व बाहर पर भी सभी बड़ो का सम्मान करते ।

अक्सर मैं कक्षा में पढ़ते समय उन सभी कमजोर छात्रों पर नजर रखता जिनका पढाई में बिलकुल मन नहीं लगता है । मैं अपने बुद्धि का इस्तेमाल करके उन कमजोर छात्रों की मदद करता ताकि उनका भी पढाई में रुचि बढे । जो भी प्रतिभाशाली छात्र है उनके लिए में अधिक मेहनत करता । जिससे उनको और आगे बढने में मदद मिल सके ।

यदि मैं शिक्षक होता तो सभी विद्यार्थियों को हँसी ख़ुशी के साथ अपना व्यवहार रखता । क्योंकि पढाई में किसी को भी कोई भी चीज का तनाव न हो । मैं अपने छात्रों को पढाई के साथ ऐतिहासिक कहानियाँ भी बताता और नामित स्थानों का सैर करता जिससे उनका सर्वाधिक गुणों का विकास हो ।

उनको पढाई के अलावा खेल कूद के बारे ने बताकर उसमें प्रतियोगिता लेने के लिए हमेशा प्रोत्साहित करता । उनके उज्ज्वल भविष्य के लिए सही गलत का मार्गदर्शन कराता ।

यदि मैं शिक्षक होता तो अपने सभी विद्यार्थियों को सरल व विनम्र बनाता । सभी को रहन – सहन और वेशभूषा में एक ही मूलमंत्र होता की “सादा जीवन उच्च विचार” के साथ जीवन जीना । मैं अपने छात्रों को एक ही सीख देता की किसी भी प्रकार के प्रलोभन में न आना और पूरे ईमानदारी के साथ अपना कार्य करना ।

मैं हमेशा उनको विवेकानन्द व ए पी जे अब्दुल कलाम जैसे ज्ञानी लोगों तथा वीर छत्रपति शिवा जी जैसे लोग के बारे में बताकर उन्हें प्रेरित करता की सभी महान लोग हमारे देश लिए बहुत कुछ किया ।

सभी विद्यार्थियों को एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक की भांति अपने कर्तव्य पथ पर चलने के लिए प्रेरित करता । ताकि आने वाले भविष्य में वो अपने देश प्रति जिम्मेदारी समझकर देश का नाम रोशन करें ।

गरीब विद्यार्थियों को शिक्षा

यदि मैं शिक्षक होता तो किसी भी तरह का पक्षपात या जातिवाद भेदभाव नहीं करता । सभी को एक सामान शिक्षा देता । अगर कोई गरीब बच्चा होता तो उसके स्थिति को समझकर उसे मैं निशुल्क शिक्षा प्रदान करता । मेरा ध्यान जरूरतमंद बच्चों पर भी पूरा फोकस रहता । उन्हें सभी की तरह उचित शिक्षा व अनुशासन का पाठ पढाता ।

As a Punjabi, my nostalgia and love for Hindi may contrast sharply with the usual fears and resentment found in non-Hindi-speaking regions of India regarding the imposition of the Hindi language. In this essay, I focus on Hindi as a language of creativity and dissent rather than government bureaucracy . I will trace my personal linguistic journey and how it is intertwined with the surrounding politics and culture.

Saul Bellow once remarked that “a language is a spiritual mansion from which no one can evict us,” asserting his right to be an autonomous English-language novelist. As we shall see below, such literary freedom isn’t available in India when regional politics, caste exclusion and cultural hegemony dictate which linguistic mansion, or cubbyhole, Indians can inhabit.

The languages of modern Punjab

I was born and raised in Punjab during the 1980s and ’90s, mostly in Jalandhar, with a few years spent in Bhatinda and a brief period in Ambala, Haryana. I got to experience Punjab and Punjabiyat by residing in different urban centres. While 40 per cent of the Sikh-majority Punjab’s population is Hindu, Jalandhar is a predominantly Hindu city and a hub of Hindi-language print media.

Although Punjabi was my mother tongue, like most urban Punjabis I also grew up speaking Hindi as my native language. Bollywood films and songs, Hindi comics, newspapers, magazines and books (published in Delhi) enriched my childhood. Before the advent of cable TV, most programs on the public broadcaster Doordarshan were in Hindi, including adaptations of the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, never mind how insufferably hacky they appear now. We also watched dramas and shows on Pakistan TV from across the border. Urdu sounded the same as Hindi, with Persian and Arabic words instead of Sanskrit.

At school, in Jalandhar, we followed a three-language model, learning Punjabi, Hindi, and English. Interestingly, children in Pakistan's Punjab province, home to most of the world's Punjabi speakers, weren’t taught Punjabi in schools until 2024. It was challenging for me to master three different scripts, but I pulled through. Also, I developed a deep fascination for Hindi literature and the culture of Hindi-speaking regions of India. My flair for Hindi expressions delighted my teachers and my literary-minded father, who was proficient in Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, English and some Sanskrit.

During my early years, in the late 1980s, I developed a passion for listening to radio stations from faraway places. I eagerly tuned in each night to All India Radio's broadcasts from distant cities in the Hindi belt, such as Shimla, Delhi, Jaipur, and Bhopal. Later, I began to enjoy Hindi shortwave radio broadcasts from the BBC, Voice of America, Deutsche Welle, and Radio Moscow, eventually switching to English services.

Hindi became for me what English later would: the language of my intellect, a gateway to the wider world. Hindi allowed me to communicate with working-class immigrants and their children from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Nepal who flocked to Punjab during its now-lost economic boom. As a teenager, I fondly remember writing a letter in Hindi to a pen pal in Bihar and receiving his reply on a yellow postcard.

Hindi-Punjabi conflict at school

The gorgeous couplets of Kabir, which often challenged social evils, and snatches of modern Hindi prose inhabited my memory as verses from Shakespeare would do later. Here’s a random textbook commentary on Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poem that I can recall and recite like a mantra some thirty years later:

बच्चन जी की पहली पत्नी की मृत्यु ने उनकी कविता को निराशा का नीड़, करुणा की रागिनी और अभाव का आकाश बना दिया था। इस लिए यह कविता उन अवसाद भरे क्षणों की देन है।

A literal English translation loses the music and emotion of the original.

“The death of Bachchan ji’s first wife turned his poetry into a nest of despair, a melody of compassion, and a sky of emptiness. Therefore, this poem is the legacy of those sorrowful moments.”

In the early 20th century, prominent Punjabis were touched by the aesthetic beauty and larger scope of Hindi. The pioneering Punjabi novelist Nanak Singh (1897–1971) writes in his autobiography Meri Duniya ( My World ) how, as a young man, he read Premchand’s novels with deep admiration and discovered his purpose in life: to become a social realist novelist. Punjab’s young anti-colonial revolutionary Bhagat Singh (1907–1931) wrote of the relationship between Punjabi and Hindi without promoting a narrow religious agenda. These early days of modern Punjab do not reflect a Hindi-Punjabi divide—rather, they suggest that the two languages were part of the same cultural continuum.

By my mid-teens, I had begun to nurture a fantasy of becoming a Hindi fiction writer. I didn’t know then that it would be a literary way to starve and be mocked by India’s English-speaking cosmopolitan elite. Arundhati Roy’s Booker Prize win in 1997 compelled all wannabe Indian writers to write in English, which accelerated the demise of Hindi as India’s major language of books, literature, good journalism and intellectual discourse. How ironic that the recent interest in Hindi literature was revived when Geetanjali Shree’s novel was translated into English as Tomb of Sand and won the International Booker Prize in 2022.

Now most Indians writing in regional languages remain acutely aware of the English translatability of their works and the possibility of access to Western literary and academic markets. When seen from the perspective of the dominance of English in India, both Hindi and Punjabi are native derelicts.

I don’t wish to paint English as a coloniser’s culturally destructive language. Authors like James Joyce, DH Lawrence, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth, and many others have shown me the revolutionary power of literature in dismantling hegemonic narratives of class, race, caste, and religion. For now, as I have noted elsewhere , Indian-English novels rarely offer radical or subversive possibilities within their upper-caste echo chamber.

Beyond these issues of cultural and social engineering, every aspirational Indian should have the intellectual and creative autonomy to express themselves in any regional or global language.

From the 1960s, for Punjab’s Hindus, the Punjabi language written in the Gurmukhi script (used for Sikh holy scriptures) came to be associated with religious orthodoxy and provincialism. With demands from the Shiromani Akali Dal for a Punjabi-speaking (effectively dominant-caste Sikh) state, Punjab was divided in 1966, chopping off the Hindi-speaking regions that now make up Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Amandeep Sandhu writes in his thought-provoking, albeit strongly pro-Punjabi, book Panjab that in the 1961 census, many Punjabi-speaking Hindus had claimed Hindi as their mother tongue to stay out of the smaller neo-Punjab.

As Pravin J Patel notes, the Akali-led Punjab movement of 1981 intensified the focus on ethno-Sikh identity, leading to demands for a Sikh theocracy (Khalistan) that spiralled into tragic violence and loss of life. As an alarming example of language policing of the time, the wildly popular Dalit Punjabi singer Chamkila received death threats for some of his racy lyrics that supposedly polluted the Punjabi language and culture. In 1988, Chamkila was shot dead at the age of 28 by unknown assailants. While certain people wanted to maintain Punjabi as a dominant and pious language, others began to see it as an imposition.

In 1991, when I was eleven and blissfully ignorant of the dangerous political currents, students at my private school in Jalandhar could be slapped or caned if teachers overheard us speaking Punjabi. Only Hindi and English were encouraged. Many Sikh parents backed this rule, believing that a greater emphasis on Hindi would make their children sophisticated. However, the restriction frustrated me because talking and swearing in Punjabi was so much fun and came naturally when communicating with others who shared the same mother tongue. We (the boys) reserved Hindi for polite conversations with teachers and girls we liked.

My best friend in school, Palwinder Singh (a Sikh with a top knot), fumed at the Hindu and Hindi imperialism. He told me Punjab would soon become a Sikh state called Khalistan. I didn’t quite understand what that meant. I assured him that I, too, resented language policing. Although Palwinder made it clear that there would be no place in Khalistan for Hindus like me, he was happy to get my support on the language issue.

Driven by our youthful rebellion, Palwinder and I swore at our teachers behind their backs, using Punjabi words that are not fit for print.

As I grew older, loving or choosing a language became extremely political and intellectually stunting.

Language and intellectual autonomy

Wendy Doniger has observed that ancient Sanskrit texts have a long tradition of dissent against socio-religious dogma. Modern Hindi has inherited many of these subversive qualities. Given the wide geographical spread of the Hindi language and the diverse belief systems covered under the umbrella term of Hinduism, it is impossible to police them.

The picture isn’t all rosy. Despite the massive popularity of Hindi through Bollywood, TV channels, YouTube and social media, the current state of Hindi literature and intellectual life is gloomy. There are hardly any good literary magazines left; the golden age of Hans , which also introduced many Dalit writers, is over. Even so, the highly politicised, ethno-Sikh Punjabi language fares much worse and offers less freedom.

In the mid-1990s, I was suddenly cut off from my beloved Hindi after completing my class ten exams. Thanks to the Punjab state’s educational policy, Hindi was absent from the curriculum throughout my five years of college, where only Punjabi and English were mandatory language subjects. Taking Hindi literature as an elective wasn’t feasible with my course load.

At the college level, choosing a language should be a matter of individual intellectual aspiration and aesthetic pleasure, not ethno-religious dominance. In 2023, Panjab University in Chandigarh faced political pressure to retain Punjabi as a compulsory subject, which effectively excludes Hindi and the diversity that comes with it.

After migrating to the West, I noticed that Hindi – spoken with various accents – rather than English often serves as the common language among Indians from the Hindi belt, as well as those from Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and even Fiji.

In Australia and New Zealand, I fully embraced the intellectual, creative and subversive possibilities of English. But I also had the freedom and pleasure of reading Hindi works by Premchand, Nirmal Verma and eye-opening Dalit writers like Omprakash Valmiki, Dr Tulsiram and Ajay Navaria. In my experience, instead of dividing India, Hindi has the potential to animate and unite it, bringing us into a larger communion and revelation.

I am a student of Class seventh in New Bombay Public School. There are seven teachers in our school. One of them is our class teacher. He takes the first period in our class.

The name of our class teacher is Mr. Anup Kunte. He is a trained graduate. He knows English and History quite well. He is very regular in his work. His voice is clear. He writes a good hand.

Mr. Anup has a tall figure. He is about five feet tall. He has fair colour. He is about thirty-six now. He wears a suit of pant and coat. He puts on shoes and stockings. He does not use neck tie.

Mr. Anup comes to my class every day in the first period. He makes the roll-call. He marked us present. The absentees are marked absent. The late comers are marked late. On the fee-collection day he takes the school fees, instead, he gives us receipts. He looks to the general well being of the class. He knows each of us by name, as a class teacher, he does his duties regularly. Besides, he takes a subject in our class. He teaches us English. On every Saturday we have a debating class. He presides over our meetings for the debate.

As a class-teacher, Mr. Anup is quite good. He is never rude to us. He never gets angry. He never loses his temper. He is liked by everyone in our class.

The aspiration to have their child/children speak in English is a dream that many Indian parents have, recognising its critical role in ensuring better socioeconomic opportunities. Despite this widespread desire, national education policies have consistently neglected English language instruction for over seven decades.

Since India’s independence, educational policies such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, influenced by political ideologies, have aimed to restrict the spread of the English language and diminish its significance across various sectors. Yet, the neutral nature of English, recognised by the Constitution of India as a tool of equality, safeguards its position, allowing it to maintain a vital role in the nation. This ongoing conflict between restrictive policies and constitutional safeguards has significantly hindered the ability of the economically deprived masses to achieve proficiency in English, perpetuating a cycle of educational and socio-economic disadvantage. This neglect has disproportionately affected marginalised children in government-run schools, deepening educational inequalities. In contrast, children from affluent families have had the resources to achieve proficiency in English, thus widening the chasm between those who can and cannot speak the language. Alarmingly, the 2011 India Census reveals that 90% of the population does not speak any English, highlighting a stark linguistic divide that underscores the failure of education policies to bridge this gap. Surprisingly, the policy does not mention this issue. Nor does it provide any measures to address it.

The NEP 2020 continues to devalue English, labelling it as foreign and ignoring its crucial role as a connector in the globalised economy. It also lacks a defined strategy to improve access to English for economically disadvantaged groups, thereby worsening the challenge of closing this critical educational gap.

The ‘agenda’ behind the cover of ‘diversity’

The NEP 2020’s three-language formula ostensibly promotes linguistic diversity but conceals a deeper agenda aimed at reviving the concept of a Hindi-India, particularly by diminishing the role of English in India. This approach not only is in conflict with the aspirations of millions who view English as a ladder to socio-economic mobility but also stands at odds with the Constitution, which safeguards against the imposition of any single language on the nation.

The Constitution enshrines English and Hindi as official languages, deliberately refraining from appointing a national language, while it also protects regional languages, thereby preserving a critical balance. This framework recognises English as an instrumental language, pivotal to education, health, law, trade, and global communication, ensuring neutrality among diverse ethnic groups, while it positions regional languages as carriers of India’s rich cultural heritage. However, the NEP 2020 risks unsettling this balance by potentially overlooking these constitutional safeguards.

This move is misguided and will ultimately fail, squandering valuable time and resources. This will force the nation to revisit the contentious linguistic debates of its past instead of promoting English to a stature that complements the cultural significance of regional languages. Recognising this constitutional discord can guide India away from historical pitfalls toward a more inclusive and pragmatic language policy.

Since the economic liberalisation of 1991, the demand for English has surged, aligning with the global narrative that “the world is flat”. This means that proficiency in English is not just desirable but also essential for participating in India’s economic growth and seizing international opportunities. Ironically, successive governments have ignored this shift, choosing instead to cling to regional and nationalistic language policies.

The NEP 2020 not only continues to marginalise English but also gives a disproportionate thrust to regional languages, inadvertently fuelling regional identity politics. This approach fails to recognise that there is no inherent conflict between nurturing regional languages and promoting English. The real issue arises from the attempts to position Hindi as the national language, which stymies the spread of English among the masses.

The anti-English stance is not new. Post-independence, there was a significant push to establish Hindi as the lingua franca of India, which led to systematic efforts to diminish the role of English, despite its status as a co-official language. This was underpinned by the belief that Hindi, unlike English, could not be a neutral bridge across India!s diverse cultural landscape.

The thread from the past

This bias can be traced back to the freedom struggle, led predominantly by Hindi-speaking leaders who envisioned a monolingual Hindi-speaking India, post-independence. The partition with Pakistan, which removed Urdu from the equation, only intensified the focus on Hindi. Despite this, the multilingual reality of India and the constitutional provisions for equality and linguistic diversity necessitated the retention of English as an official language alongside Hindi.

The National Policy on Education 1968 introduced a three-language formula supposedly to spread Hindi across non-Hindi-speaking regions, thereby integrating the nation linguistically.

However, this formula faced opposition, particularly from Tamil Nadu, which saw it as an imposition of Hindi while diminishing the role of English. The NEP 2020, despite claiming flexibility in language choice, subtly continues this agenda under the guise of offering choice, thus not addressing the core issue of language imposition.

The practical implementation of this policy shows its flaws. While it allows for the selection of languages, the infrastructure and resources are heavily biased towards Hindi. This not only limits real choice but also undermines the policy’s goal of fostering multilingualism. The emphasis on Hindi and Sanskrit, due to cultural and political motivations, neglects English, which remains crucial in the professional, educational, and legal contexts in India.

Be pragmatic

In comparison, countries such as China have recognised the importance of English, mandating its study to align with global economic shifts and the aspirations of its middle class. This is in stark contrast with India’s approach, where the lack of a focused English language policy may hinder our global economic engagement and social mobility.

To rectify this, India needs a pragmatic language policy that respects its cultural diversity while addressing the practical needs of its citizens. A two-language formula, comprising a regional language and English, would better serve the aspirations of Indians to be global citizens while preserving their unique cultural identities. Such a policy would enable broader participation in global economic opportunities and ensure that all Indians can engage effectively in the professional, educational, and legal spheres of life.

The government must prioritise the promotion and the development of English not as a competitor to Indian languages but as a vital tool for national and international communication. This approach aligns with the democratic principles of equality and individual rights, ensuring that every citizen can participate fully in the nation’s socioeconomic activities without linguistic barriers.

India, as a liberal democracy, must be responsive to the needs and wants of its citizens. It is high time its language policy reflects this, promoting a balanced multilingual framework that genuinely supports the aspirations of all Indians. English is India’s solution.
