More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled.

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

We’re running out of time to save our planet - using up the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life - and nature simply cannot keep up with our demands. That’s the message from the organizers of World Environment Day 2022 on 5 June.

What is World Environment Day?

First held in 1973, World Environment Day is described as “a global platform for inspiring positive change” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the organization that created it.

It is now the largest global environmental event, with millions of people in more than 150 countries participating. The idea is to engage “governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities [in] raising awareness and celebrating environmental action”.

The 2022 World Environment Day, hosted by Sweden, campaigns for “collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet”, encouraging everyone, everywhere, to live sustainably and take action on the climate crisis.

This year marks 50 years since the first global environment summit. The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm led to the founding of UNEP .

UNEP says that, despite a raft of climate agreements, progress towards halting climate change is still too slow and individuals and civil society must play a key role in raising awareness and urging governments and the private sector to make large-scale changes.

Closing the adaptation gap

The cost of climate change is rising, says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, as is the gap between what is being spent to adapt to climate change and what is needed . As recently as 2014, the cost of adaptation in developing nations was estimated at $100 billion a year . Today that figure is $500 billion .

To limit the rise in global temperature, which is driving climate change, to 1.5C, worldwide CO2 emissions will need to halve by 2030, UNEP says. If there is no change in current plans, temperatures will be 2.7C higher by the end of the century .

Climate change poses an urgent threat demanding decisive action. Communities around the world are already experiencing increased climate impacts, from droughts to floods to rising seas. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report continues to rank these environmental threats at the top of the list.

To limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, it is essential that businesses, policy-makers, and civil society advance comprehensive near- and long-term climate actions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The World Economic Forum's Climate Initiative supports the scaling and acceleration of global climate action through public and private-sector collaboration. The Initiative works across several workstreams to develop and implement inclusive and ambitious solutions.

This includes the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, a global network of business leaders from various industries developing cost-effective solutions to transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. CEOs use their position and influence with policy-makers and corporate partners to accelerate the transition and realize the economic benefits of delivering a safer climate.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2022 rated climate action failure as the most severe risk facing the world over the next decade, a risk it said had been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Another way of measuring how humanity is using Earth’s resources faster than they can be replaced is Earth Overshoot Day , the day in the year on which the world stops living sustainably. The earlier in the year it falls, the more unsustainable life on Earth becomes.

It is calculated annually by the Global Footprint Network (GFN) by dividing the amount of resources Earth can generate in a given year by human demand for resources in that year. In 2021 it was 29 July. The global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed 2020 Earth Overshoot Day back to 22 August. The date for 2022 has yet to be calculated.

For World Environment Day 2022, the theme #OnlyOneEarth, which was used at the first global environment gathering in 1972, is being revived. Sweden will also host an international conference called Stockholm+50 to accelerate climate action.

Environment day is celebrated with a prime objective to make efforts conducive to retain the true form of the environment, without damaging it. Organizations support the WED by taking greener initiatives in offices.

Issues like carbon footprint, waste disposal, and deforestations, etc. are addressed and people commit to new methods conducive to the environment growth.

Guidelines are issued to manufacturing industries and other businesses instructing or advising them to adopt environment-friendly policies. Many businesses come forward and display their commitment towards a safe and healthy environment and to reduce any human impacts on it.

Any common person can also actively participate in World Environment Day by making a commitment to an eco-friendly lifestyle. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 th June by the United Nations and around 143 other countries. It is being celebrated since 1974 as a global program to reach out to the masses on several issues of environmental concern. In the essay below we will go through the details of World Environment Day.

Institution of World Environment Day

The Scandinavian nation Sweden in 1968 suggested to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that a UN conference be held focusing on the interference of humans with the environment. Following the proposal, ECOSOC passed a resolution no 1346 in support of the idea.

Next year in 1968 the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 2398, in which it gave its consent to organize the proposed conference in 1972. The conference was held in which the environmental issues were discussed and guidelines were issued to the concerned countries and organizations. Thus, beginning in 1974, World Environment Day is observed every year.

The main objective of the World Environment Day is to reach out extensively to the masses on the different issues of environmental concern and to raise awareness.

The basic idea is to create an environment where individuals feel their responsibility towards the environment and governments take necessary conducive efforts for the protection of the environment.

By environment we mean here all the possible constituents of the environment – air, water, marine life, wildlife, vegetation and all. Every year a new theme is adopted for the observation. The theme is selected based on a different issue concerning the environment and human interference with it.

Governments, NGOs, and dignitaries from around the world adopt the theme to raise general awareness about the environment. United Nations also issue guidelines to the concerned governments regarding the plan for environment conservation.

Themes and Host Countries

Every year a specific theme is adopted by the world nations for the observation of World Environment Day. The theme is decided by the United over a concerned topic and the events are coordinated based on that particular theme. The theme of the first World Environment Day observed in 1974 was “Only One Earth”.

In 1987 began a tradition of selecting a country to play host for a year’s observation of the World Environment Day.

Like in 1974, the city of Spokane in the United States played the host of the first-ever World Environment Day. Similarly many of the nations including, Australia, China, England, Pakistan, India, etc. have played host with different themes.

New Delhi, the capital of India, hosted the events twice – firstly in 2011 and again in 2018. The themes of World Environment Day 2011 and 2018 were “Forests: Nature at Your Service” and “Beat Plastic Pollution” respectively.

Observations

Governments and organizations plan their events based on the annual theme. Social media is abuzz with common people and celebrities talking about environmental issues and raising awareness.

People and small societies also plan their own events like talk shows, discussions, awareness programs, etc. Many environment enthusiasts also post their photos with nature, on social media. Children in schools are also given special awareness lectures on the environment and its significance and also how human interference can be reduced.

World Environment Day is an important global event which is the United Nation’s front end program to raise awareness on human interference to the environment. Many countries actively participate in the events, reaffirming their dedication towards environmental causes. It is very important that World Environment Day be observed without fail including more and more member countries to raise global awareness for environmental protection.

On June 5, 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the 2024 World Environment Day global celebrations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ main vehicle of worldwide encouragement for environmental action and awareness.

About the 2024 Edition

After its first edition in 1972, World Environment Day has become a major global event for environmental awareness. This year, the campaign will focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

The UN warns that about 40% of the Earth’s land is degraded, impacting half the population and endangering roughly half of the global economy. Droughts have increased by 29% since 2000, and without action, they could affect over 75% of the world’s population by 2050.

NY must make the electric school bus transition

This guest essay reflects the views of Bella Cockerell, New York organizing manager for Mothers Out Front, and Joseph Ambrosio, chief executive of Unique Electric Solutions Inc., a Holbrook-based company that repowers diesel buses into electric buses.

When New York’s all-electric school bus legislation passed in 2022, environmentalists lauded it as a visionary plan and a victory in the climate fight, while school administrators and parents cheered the health and safety benefits it would provide for the state's more than 2 million children who ride to and from school each day.

In the two years since that groundbreaking legislation passed, questions have been raised about the feasibility — both financially and operationally — of meeting the 2027 deadline for new purchases and the 2035 deadline for the entire fleet.

These concerns are misplaced, and the urgency remains to address the detrimental effects of diesel-powered buses on the environment and our children's health.

Air pollution inside a diesel bus can be as much as 12 times higher than outside the bus. That’s because when a school bus stops at a traffic signal, is stuck in traffic, or pauses to pick up or drop off students, the filthy tailpipe emissions drift back into the cabin for the children and driver to breathe in.

This is a major contributor to the surging asthma epidemic, which is especially prevalent in low-income communities and communities of color. For these children, that means difficulty breathing, regular visits to the emergency room, and missed classes. In fact, asthma affects 10% of children and is the leading cause of school absenteeism in New York, according to the state Department of Health. In the long term, it contributes to poorer learning outcomes, lower earning potential, and chronic health conditions.

Alongside the public health benefits of electric school buses are unquestioned environmental benefits. With the transportation sector making up nearly 30% of statewide greenhouse emissions, transitioning our school bus fleet to electric is crucial to the climate fight.

Fortunately, substantial funding is available right now at the state and federal levels for electric school buses and charging stations, as well as for a pragmatic alternative to purchasing new buses — retrofitting existing gas buses to make them electric. Changing over an entire fleet to electric in one year is not always practical; retrofits can address cost concerns and provide more flexibility for a phased transition.

Funds from New York’s Environmental Bond Act and the state's School Bus Incentive Program are already easing the financial burden on school districts, as are the federal bipartisan Infrastructure Act and the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program. The state incentive program alone can provide up to $171,000 for each electric school bus purchased, which would pay for most of the cost of a repower or nearly 50% of a new electric bus. Enough resources exist for school districts to begin the transition immediately.

Even in rural upstate districts, where bus routes face longer commutes and colder temperatures, electric buses have the juice to make these journeys. In Havre, Montana, for example, a sparsely populated rural county, electric school buses have handled temperatures as low as minus-40 degrees.

With school budget votes taking place next week, the time is now for parents to tell their local school officials that they will not stand by while dirty diesel buses compromise their children’s health.

Starting small and learning as we go are key principles. School districts can begin with just a single bus, gaining valuable insights into the operational and logistical aspects.

As the saying goes, “Start small, but start now.”
