500 Words Essay on 3 Idiots Movie Review

3 Idiots, a Bollywood film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a delightful blend of comedy, drama, and romance, all while tackling the serious issues of the Indian education system. The film, released in 2009, stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, who play the roles of three engineering students at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering.

The film revolves around the lives of Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Joshi), and Ranchoddas ‘Rancho’ Shamaldas Chanchad (Khan). The narrative unfolds through Farhan’s perspective, who, pressured by his parents, is pursuing an engineering degree despite his passion for wildlife photography. Raju, coming from a poverty-stricken family, views education as a way out of his economic hardships. Rancho, the ‘idiot’ who questions conventional wisdom and the education system, encourages his friends to follow their passions.

Themes and Symbolism

3 Idiots is not just a film about friendship and love; it delves deeper into the societal pressure faced by students in India. It criticizes the rote-learning system, which stifles creativity and encourages competition over understanding. Rancho, the heart of the movie, symbolizes rebellion against this system. He believes in understanding concepts rather than memorizing textbooks, a philosophy that is reflected in his famous dialogue, “Don’t chase success; chase excellence, and success will follow.”

Performances and Direction

The performances by the lead actors are commendable. Aamir Khan, as Rancho, steals the show with his charismatic and convincing portrayal. Madhavan and Joshi deliver solid performances, successfully capturing the essence of their characters. The supporting cast, including Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani, also contribute significantly to the narrative.

Rajkumar Hirani’s direction is top-notch. He successfully manages to blend humor with serious issues, creating a film that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. The screenplay is tight, with each scene contributing to the overall narrative.

Impact and Conclusion

3 Idiots is more than a movie; it’s a critique of the Indian education system and a call for change. It encourages students to break free from societal norms and pursue their passions. The film’s impact was such that it sparked debates about the need for education reform in India.

In conclusion, 3 Idiots is a must-watch film that beautifully encapsulates the struggles of Indian students. It’s a brilliant mix of humor, drama, and social commentary, making it a cinematic masterpiece that resonates with audiences even today.

essay about 3 idiots

Lessons Learnt from the “3 Idiots” Movie Essay

Foreign cinema is that subtype of art that provides an experience that can be considered better in terms of uniqueness than domestic films can deliver. 3 idiots are one such foreign film, and it is filled with Indian visuals, narration, and storytelling. From a classic genre perspective, Hirani’s work can be classified as a comedy. The story of this cinematographic piece represents a traditional journey from myths or a realistic fairy tale with comedic elements. 3 idiots do not contain fantasy elements or episodes; it is a story of the maturing protagonists, Farhan, Raju, and Rancho, and their overcoming of life path hardships related to tertiary education and young adulthood (Hirani, 2009). However, the inspiration taken from Indian and other folktales is visible.

The central idea of 3 idiots is easy to understand and even basic. The story’s lesson about the fictional three Indian students is that true friendship is a source of support, opportunities, and success, and one should stick to it if they have it (Hirani, 2009). There is also an element of novelty, which is the idea that competition is not contrary to friendship and even beneficial, but only if the competition between friends occurs in parallel fields.

3 idiots is also a nearly three-hour introduction for viewers to India’s college culture and societal and gender relationships. Sociologists and cultural academics would especially be interested in the interactions between Viru, students, and his daughters and the revelation of an informal deal between the real Rancho and Phunsukh Wangdu. These plot episodes and scenes show and criticize the socio-economic hierarchy in Delhi and India that is the origin of more inequality and family tragedies such as student suicides (Hirani, 2009). Pia’s character and the micro-plot of her unhappy wedding might draw the attention of scholars of gender studies.

  • Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Rancchoddas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) are three engineering students who share a room in a hostel at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in India. While Farhan and Raju are average students from modest backgrounds, Rancho is from a rich family. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but has joined engineering college to fulfil his father's wish. Raju on the other hand wants to uplift his family fortunes. Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. However, Rancho's passion is for knowledge and taking apart and building machines rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks. With his different approach Rancho incurs the wrath of dean of college, Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani). Rancho irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unorthodox answers, and confronts ViruS after fellow student Joy Lobo hangs himself in his dormitory room. Joy had requested an extension on his major project on compassionate groundshis father had suffered a strokebut ViruS refused, saying that he himself was completely unmoved by his own son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho denounces the rat race, dog-eat-dog, mindless rote learning mentality of the institution, blaming it for Lobo's death. Threatened by Rancho's talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an "idiot" and attempts on a number of occasions to destroy his friendship with Farhan and Raju, warning them and their parents to steer clear of Rancho. In contrast, ViruS model student is Chatur Ramalingam or "Silencer", (Omi Vaidya) who sees a high rank at the prestigious college as his ticket to higher social status, corporate power, and therefore wealth. Chatur conforms to the expectations of the system. Rancho humiliates Chatur, who is awarded the honour of making a speech at an award ceremony, by substituting obscenities into the text, which has been written by the librarian. As expected, Chatur mindlessly memorises the speech, without noticing that anything is amiss, partly aided by his lack of knowledge on Hindi. His speech becomes the laughing stock of the audience, infuriating the authorities in the process. Meanwhile, Rancho also falls in love with ViruS' medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) when he, Raju and Farhan crash her sister's wedding banquet in order to get a free meal, in the process further infuriating ViruS. Meanwhile, the three students continue to anger ViruS, although Rancho continues to come first in every exam, while Chatur is always second, and Farhan and Raju are inevitably in the last two positions. The tensions come to a head when the three friends, who are already drunk, break into ViruS's house at night to allow Rancho to propose to Pia, and then urinate on a door inside the compound before running away when ViruS senses intruders. The next day, ViruS threatens to expel Raju lest he talks on the other two. Unable to choose between betraying his friend or letting down his family, Raju jumps out of the 3rd floor window and lands on a courtyard, but after extensive care from Pia and his roommates, awakes from a coma. The experience has changed Farhan and Raju, and they adopt Rancho's outlook. Farhan decides to pursue his love of photography, while Raju takes an unexpected approach for an interview for a corporate job. He attends in plaster and a wheelchair and gives a series of non-conformal and frank answers. However, ViruS is unsympathetic and vows to make the final exam as hard as possible so that Raju is unable to graduate. Pia hears him and angrily confronts him, and when ViruS gives the same ruthless reply he gives to his students, she denounces him in the same way that Rancho did over the suicide of Lobo. Pia reveals that Viru's son and her brother was not killed in an accident but committed suicide in front of a train and left a letter because ViruS had forced him to pursue a career in engineering over his love for literature; ViruS always mentioned that he unsympathetically failed his son on the ICE entrance exams over and over to every new intake of ICE students. After this, Pia walks out on the family home, and takes ViruS's spare keys with her. She tells Rancho of the exam, and he and Farhan break into ViruS's office and steals the exam and give it to Raju, who with his new-found attitude, is unconcerned with the prospect of failing, and refuses to cheat and throws the paper away. However, ViruS catches the trio and expels them on the spot. However, they earn a reprieve when Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labour at the same time. A heavy storm cuts all power and traffic, and Pia is still in self-imposed exile, so she instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college common room via VOIP, after Rancho restores power using car batteries and a power inverter that Rancho had dreamed up and ViruS had mocked. Rancho then delivers the baby with the help of a cobbled-together Vacuum extractor. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it. ViruS reconciles with Rancho and his friends and allows them to take their final exams and they graduate. Rancho comes first and is awarded ViruS's pen, which the professor had been keeping for decades before finding a brilliant enough student to gift it to. Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years after Chatur vowed revenge on Rancho for embarrassing him at the speech night and promised to become more successful than Rancho a decade later. Having lost contact with Rancho, who disappeared during the graduation party and went into seclusion, Raju and Farhan begin a journey to find him. They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy and successful businessman, who joins them, brazenly confident that he has surpassed Rancho. Chatur is also looking to seal a deal with a famous scientist and prospective business associate named Phunsukh Wangdu. Chatur sees Wangdu, who has hundreds of patents, as his ticket to further social prestige. When they find Rancho's house, they walk into his father's funeral, and find a completely different Rancho Jaaved Jaffrey. After accusing the new man of stealing their friend's identity and profiting from his intellect, the host pulls a gun on them, but Farhan and Raju turn the tables by seizing the father's ashes and threatening to flush them down the toilet. The householder capitulates and says that their friend was a destitute servant boy who loved learning, while he, the real Rancho, was a lazy wealthy child who disliked study, so the family agreed to let the servant boy study in Rancho's place instead of labouring. In return, the real Rancho would pocket the qualifications and the benefits thereof, while the impersonator would sever all contact with the world and start a new life. The real Rancho reveals that his impersonator is now a schoolteacher in Ladakh. Raju and Farhan then find Pia, and take her from her wedding day to Suhas by performing the same tricks with his material possessions, and having Raju turn up to the ceremony disguised as the groom and eloping with Pia in public. When they arrive in Ladakh, they see a group of enthusiastic Ladakhi children who are motivated by love of knowledge. Pia and the fake Rancho rekindle their love, while Chatur mocks and abuses Rancho the schoolteacher before walking away. When his friends ask what his real name is, he reveals that it Phunsukh Wangdu and phones Chatur, who has turned his back, to turn around and meet his prospective business partner. Chatur is horrified and falls to his knees, accepts his defeat and continues to plead his case with Phunsukh to establish the business relationship he was after.

Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi and Mona Singh as Mona (Pia’s sister). The film mainly revolves around three college engineering students; Rancho, Farhan, and Raju. Rancho is the son of a wealthy Indian man, while his colleagues, Farhan and Raju, hail from an average background.

The main idea demonstrated in the film is the essence of doing what we are ambitious about rather than people’s suggestions. This is evident in the character of Farhan, whose dream was to do wildlife photography but instead did engineering to honor his parents’ wishes. However, his academic performances are not amusing. The film also illustrates the importance of chasing excellence instead of success, evident in Rancho, whose passion is earning knowledge. Rancho criticizes the school’s antics because the engineering college believed in good grades and termed failure a direct ticket to poverty, resulting in clashes with the lectures and the college dean, Professor Viru (ViruS). Through the film, we get the idea of the need to be more creative and how to study well at the University instead of memorizing books. It is evident in Raju, who believes in rote learning to get good grades.

Additionally, the film demonstrates the impacts parents, lectures and peers pose on students through pressure for academic excellence. It raises several challenges facing students, especially in India and other Asian countries, by clearly showing the impact of rote learning, high parental expectations, teachers’ attitudes, and peer influences. For instance, Rancho witnesses the death of Lobo, a student, who commits suicide after missing a project deadline and denial to graduate by ViruS.

The film manifests its strengths by how impactfully it brings out the themes of education and striving for success through the students. I like how Rancho demonstrates the need to pursue excellence instead of chasing success when he starts a new school for inventors and passes his learning ideology to other generations. The film also shows us the need to pursue what we have passion for instead of other people’s suggestions. It is evident among the three engineering students. Rancho always tops in his academic performance while his two friends lag. The importance of being creative is also impactfully brought out in the film; it is better to learn and understand instead of memorizing, both from personal and professional perspectives. It is evident from the movie that earning knowledge of how things work and applying those things to improve other peoples’ lives is vital. I also like how the film showcases the innovations in India, for example, the scooter-powered flour mill.

However, despite how good the film is, it has some weaknesses portrayed in different scenes. For example, pranks; the prank pulled on Chatur was molesting and terrible. It occurs when Rancho changes some of the words in a speech presented by Chatur. He ends up getting embarassed in front of the crowd. This act would tear up anyone’s self-confidence and push them to depression. Scenes of students drinking are present in the film. This wrongly impacts the student’s psychology and puts the engineering college in question. In addition, students do not find solutions to problems but commit suicide making in the wrong way to address challenges. Although necessity is the mother of invention, I think doing baby delivery with a suction pipe is not ethical, which may be disturbing for some viewers to watch.

Essay Preview: My Favorite Movie Is 3 Idiots

My  favourite movie is 3 Idiots. This is a story of the three engineering students in Imperial College of Engineering who finds their friendship as making themselves like idiots but learning from it. The main casts were Farhan Qureshi acted by R. Madhavan, Raju Rastogi acted by Sharman Joshi and Ranchoddas Shamaldas “Rancho” Chanchad acted by Aamir Khan. The main reason why I like love film, inspite of being a comedy carries a message and it’s about humanity. Other than that, I like this movie because it conveys about our schooling system. Nowadays, rote memorization isn't the only thing,it is the understanding of the subject that is needed more than that. It also conveys about expectations of parents and teachers from students. That it is about what one truly enjoys doing than to do what earns more. That grades are not everything. Moreover,In this movie it shows me that we must care and love our family. I really love my family. I always keep my promises for them, to raise them from poverty and to travel with them around the world. What I wanted for my family is to make them happy. Like Raju,we just want to free our family from poor quality that we had. Still I am happy though my family is striving crisis, because I believe that what important is, you are together with your family and you are having fun. This film influences me so much especially the quote “All is well” that always comes out from the mouth of Rancho. I belives that whatever circumstances may lead, if there is any obstacle I may encounter, I will just say this and I will be calm because I believes that there must be a solution in every problem.

Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students

Description of the 3 idiots film.

The 3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It has managed to secure a position in the top Bollywood movie list. It is one of the best motivational blockbuster films in the history of Bollywood. The 3 Idiots film has become the highest-grossing opening-day collection film. It has also become the highest opening weekend collection film in India’s history of Bollywood films. It is one of the first Indian films that earn Rs 200 Crores net at the box office. Finally, it earned Rs 395 crores globally.

The most famous Indian actor Aamir Khan played the leading role in the film 3 Idiots. Apart from Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya acted in the lead roles. They are also very familiar faces in the Bollywood world. The 3 Idiots film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film director offered Actor Shah Rukh Khan the character of Rancho. He declined the offer citing date issues, and the role went to Aamir Khan .

The three essential roles of the 3 Idiots film are Aamir Khan as Rancchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad or Phunsukh Wangdu, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi. They studied engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering and shared a room in a hostel. Apart from them, the additional stars are Kareena Kapoor as Pia, Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam (Silencer), Boman Irani as Viru Sahastrebuddhe (Virus), Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi,  and Mona Singh as Mona Sahastrebuddhe (pia’s sister).

The Imperial College of Engineering is one of India’s best colleges for engineering studies. Rancho got admission as a rich man’s son in India, while Farhan and Raju are from an average family. Farhan dreamed of being a wildlife photographer, but his father insisted he study engineering because it had his wish. Indeed, Rancho was the son of a gardener.

Raju has come to study to uplift his family’s fortunes because he is from an impoverished family. Rancho’s passion is earning knowledge rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks. With his different approach, Rancho suffers the wrath of the dean of the college, Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani). Rancho terms the dean as ViruS.

He irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unique answers. Joy was also a student of the Imperial College of Engineering. She had requested the dean to extend his major project on the compassionate grounds that his father had suffered a stroke. But, Virus refused, saying he was utterly unmoved by his son’s accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho condemns the learning system of the institution, blaming it for Lobo’s death.

Threatened by Rancho’s talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an “idiot,” and he attempts to destroy his friendship with Raju and Farhan. In contrast, (Omi Vaidya) Chatur Ramalingam, or “Silencer,” is the model student in the eyes of ViruS, who always wants to get high marks through memorizing rather than understanding.

Finally, Rancho comes first, and he was awarded ViruS’s pen that he had been keeping for a few decades to gift to the most brilliant student.

3 Idiots Film Review- Opinions

The 3 Idiots Bollywood film is a great film to motivate students. It has come up with an excellent message for university students. Three Idiots film teaches us to be more creative rather than only memorizing books. Every student should watch this film to understand better how to study well at University without remembering books.

The 3 Idiots film will help differentiate between the students who like to memorize only without understanding and those who want to understand topics rather than memorize. The audience will get a clear concept of the duties and responsibilities of a successful student. I immensely enjoyed this film for its fantastic story, casting, dialogue, and music.

Strengths of the 3 Idiots Film

This film teaches us that we should focus on what we like to do and stop doing what people suggest doing us, just like Farhan. From a personal or professional perspective, calm and motivate yourself when you face difficulties or critical situations. It results in positive things in our lives. We should not be just confined to bookish Knowledge. Only getting higher ranks won’t help you succeed, but you will surely succeed if you get excellent at your work.

Don’t run behind the success; achieve excellence first; the success will automatically come looking for you. Be always creative in your answers, work, & things, which helps you become more capable of your own life.

Believing in our own is very much important. If you want to achieve something, you must think you can fully achieve it. It will surely get easier to achieve your goal. If you’re going to succeed, you can’t just race with others; instead, you will have to think more advanced than them, more significantly, and more efficiently.

Based on the 348,000 responses in IMBD,  the 3 Idiots film obtained a rating of 8.4/10.

Weaknesses of the 3 Idiots Film

This film has many pranking scenes, such as pranking teachers and mocking professors. Moreover, the prank with Chatur was too terrible; it could tear up any student’s self-confidence and push them towards depression. There are a few scenes where students drink alcohol, which badly impacts students’ psychology and questions the engineering college system. Students are died of suicide instead of solving problems.

Additionally, in this film, the audience can see the delivery of a baby with a suction pipe, giving exams after times up, and just fleeing quickly by mixing their papers with other papers.

We think the filmmakers haven’t done enough research on baby delivery. Otherwise, they would have known that the placenta was also delivered after the baby’s delivery. Doctors can find such mistakes in the film.

The leading role in this film is Aamir Khan, who did not struggle enough to achieve success. But it is a fact that struggle and handwork are inevitable for success.

Additionally, the writer Chetan Bhagat claimed that the story of the 3 Idiots film has taken from his novel “Five Point Someone.” This controversy came up just after released the movie. However, Rajkumar Hirani explained that he had taken permission from Chetan Bhagat while writing the script.

3 Idiots Film Evaluation with Evidence

Based on the evidence, it is safe to say that this is one of the most successful films in Bollywood history. The 3 Idiots film earned around US$90 million, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film. Additionally, the film has won six Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, and three National Film Awards. It has won overseas awards, such as Japan’s Videoyasan Awards Grand Prize. Further, the 3 Idiots film has been nominated for Best Outstanding Foreign Language Film at the Japan Academy Awards and Best Foreign Film at China’s Beijing International Film Festival. The 3 Idiot film was a hit in China, and they were even interested in remaking it.

Lessons from the 3 Idiots Film

Raju: I have learned to stand up on my feet after breaking my legs.

Rancho: Follow your passion. Don’t study something you know you are not interested in or are bad at.

Rancho: Learning is not memorizing the exact words from the textbook. Learning means understanding the topic and describing it in your own words with your ideas.

Recommendations to Watch 3 Idiots Film

I want to recommend people to watch this motivational film. Firstly, It is a family-friendly film. So, all family members, from the eldest to the youngest, can sit together to watch this film. There is no intimate sexual scene except a kissing scene. In addition, this film story is appropriate to student life so that students will enjoy it very much. Students can get motivation from this film to study well. Finally, it is a motivational film and gives positive thoughts to acquire success in life.

Dear Boomers, the Student Protesters Are Not Idiots

An illustration showing a close-up of a suit jacket with a rainbow tie-dye tie and buttons. The first is a peace symbol, and the other three say “love,” “but also.” and “shut up and study.”

By Elizabeth Spiers

Ms. Spiers, a contributing Opinion writer, is a journalist and a digital media strategist.

Appearing last week on “Morning Joe,” Hillary Clinton lamented what she views as the ignorance of students protesting the war in Gaza. The host, Joe Scarborough, asked her about “the sort of radicalism that has mainstream students getting propaganda, whether it’s from their professors or from the Chinese Communist government through TikTok.” Ms. Clinton was happy to oblige. “I have had many conversations, as you have had, with a lot of young people over the last many months,” she said. “They don’t know very much at all about the history of the Middle East or frankly about history in many areas of the world, including in our own country.”

I’ve taught students at the college level for 12 years, most recently at New York University’s journalism school. I’ve also seen and heard the assumptions made about them by some of their elders — administrators, parents and others. So it’s no surprise now to hear protesters described as “ spoiled and entitled kids ” or delicate “ snowflakes ” who cower in their safe spaces and don’t believe in free speech . Billionaires like Ken Griffin , Bill Ackman and, of course, Donald Trump — as entitled as anyone — have been particularly vocal in their disdain, calling the students in one instance “whiny” and demanding that they be punished for protesting. Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, even suggested that TikTok should be banned in part because “you’re seeing how these kids are being manipulated by certain groups or entities or countries to foment hate on their behalf and really create a hostile environment here in the U.S.”

Whether they realize it or not, Ms. Clinton, Mr. Lawler and the rest are engaging in a moral panic about America’s youth that is part of a larger effort to discredit higher education in general. That effort includes fearmongering about diversity programs and critical race theory. But it starts with students.

In the current panic, the protesters are described as somehow both terribly fragile and such a threat to public safety that they need to be confronted by police officers in riot gear. To justify the police department’s excessive response at Columbia University, Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry showed Newsmax viewers a large chain and a book with the title “Terrorism” that had been recovered from one site of protest. The former was a common bike chain Columbia sells to students and the latter was part of Oxford University Press’s lovely “Very Short Introductions” series, which covers topics from animal behavior to Rousseau and black holes.

There are some obvious partisan factors at work here: Staunch support for Israel among Republicans , for instance, and the long-running right-wing insistence that elite universities are liberal indoctrination camps. But recent research reveals a significant generational divide as well. A recent YouGov poll found that 45 percent of people ages 45 to 64 strongly opposed the protests, as did 56 percent of people 65 and older. By comparison, only 12 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds strongly opposed them, and 21 percent of people ages 30 to 44.

It’s not just about Gaza; similar age gaps emerged in response to protests after the murder of George Floyd, too. Eighty-seven percent of adults ages 18 to 34 supported the protests in June 2020, according to Gallup , while only 54 percent of adults 65 and older did. And just 3 percent of the older group had participated in the protests, while 26 percent of the younger group had.

We know from research that adults under 40 are more likely to participate in a protest than adults over 40, and generally prefer informal political participation more than their older cohorts, who are more likely to participate by voting. But that doesn’t fully explain the outright hostility some have leveled at campus protesters.

High-profile public figures of all ideological stripes have varyingly called for the students to be kicked out of their institutions, made unemployable or sent to prison. They’ve floated implausible scenarios in which the protests turn deadly. Students brave enough to risk their financial aid and scholarships are derided as childish rather than principled. And though they are educated to participate in civic life, as soon as these students exercise their First Amendment rights, they are told that protecting private property is a more pressing public concern. It’s as though some older adults simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea that college students, who are old enough to marry, have families and risk their lives for their country, are capable of having well thought-out principles.

“They basically want students to shut up and study,” is how Robert Cohen, a scholar of 20th-century social protest, put it when I spoke to him this week. It doesn’t matter how virtuous the cause, he explained; older generations start with a bias against students. But protest is often the only way students have any voice at all in university matters. “People do not understand that university governance is fundamentally undemocratic,” Mr. Cohen said, noting that even students who have convinced universities to consider divestment have won, at best, the right to make their case to the board.

In my experience, the stereotypes about today’s students are often ludicrously far from reality. College students of this generation have far more knowledge about complex world events than mine or Ms. Clinton’s did, thanks to the availability of the internet and a 24/7 news cycle fire-hosed directly into their phones. Representative Lawler may be correct that some portion of that information comes from clips on TikTok, and social media can be misleading, but there’s no evidence that college students are more likely to be misled by TikTok than people Mr. Lawler’s age and older are likely to be misled by Facebook. In fact, research indicates that younger people are more savvy and skeptical about media, and more likely to triangulate among different sources to see if something is true.

They may also be more sensitive to the horrors of children being killed here and elsewhere because they grew up participating in active shooter drills and watching the aftermath of mass shootings on the news. They are less financially secure than generations prior, and less likely to believe that institutions will save them or reward them for loyalty and hard work . But they are not babies, and they are not oblivious or naïve. And their ideas and actions cannot be dismissed just because some bad actor — no mass movement is without them — does or says something stupid.

I’m somewhat sympathetic to those who find protests uncomfortable. They’re always disruptive, as they’re supposed to be. And big loud crowds make me nervous now in a way that they didn’t when I was 22 and a big loud crowd was fun and meant I was at a club with oontz-oontz-oontz music and 73 of my closest friends. I now prefer political participation that is less hard on the knees. But I am exhilarated to see students using protest for exactly the reasons it’s protected by the First Amendment. It allows them to stand up for their values, invest in what’s happening in the world and hold decision makers accountable, even if it means putting themselves at risk. And most compellingly, it’s getting the attention of the president and other lawmakers who can effect change far beyond the walls of any university campus.
