Erumbu review: A heartwarming tale of hard work and determination

What makes Suresh G's directorial special is the fact that though it is a film about children, it can be enjoyed by adults too.

Director Suresh G tells a simple but heartwarming tale of love, hard work and determination in his film Erumbu ( Ant).

What makes Erumbu special is the fact that though it is a film about children, it can be enjoyed by adults too. It might be a story about children, but the point it looks to make is by no means childish.

Suresh G tells a very moving tale about two children — a brother and a sister— from a lower-middle-income rural family that is both refreshing and inspiring.

Annadurai (Charlie) is a farm labourer who has to slog long and hard to make ends meet.

Annadurai’s family comprises his second wife, Kamalam (Susan George), their just-born son, his two children from his first wife — Pachayamma (Monika Siva) and Muthu (Shakthi Rithvik) — and his elderly mother.

Both Pachayamma and Muthu dread their stepmother Kamalam who has a violent temper.

Like most other villagers, Annadurai, too, is unable to make enough money to run the family and often has to take loans from loan sharks.

He takes a loan from an uncouth money lender named Arumugam (MS Bhaskar). One day, Annadurai suffers humiliation at Arumugam’s hands as he is unable to pay back interest on the loan on time.

In a bid to redeem his dignity, Annadurai fights back. This only infuriates Arumugam even more.

He issues an ultimatum that Annadurai will have to repay the entire amount along with interest before the month’s end or he would lock out of the latter’s house.

Determined to pay off Arumugam’s loan at any cost, Annadurai and his wife set off for work.

Annadurai and Kamalam usually take a fortnight to return home if they go out to work, as the sugarcane fields are usually located far from their native place.

During this time, the kids are entrusted to the care of their granny.

At work, Annadurai lists the various options he has to get money to pay off the debt in full. One such source he has in mind is by selling off the only piece of gold they own — a small ring that Kamalam’s brother presented to their infant son.

Even as Annadurai and his wife slog in the fields, back home, his mother takes care of her grandchildren.

One day, her grandson Muthu starts weeping inconsolably, and the old lady, to pacify him, takes out the gold ring from the cupboard and hands it to him.

The child wears the ring and proudly shows it off to his friends. However, he ends up losing it.

When Muthu realises he has lost the gold ring, he is horrified. He trembles in fear at the prospect of having to disclose this to his stepmother.

He weeps and confides in his sister Pachyamma, who comes to his rescue. How she comes to not just his rescue but also to the rescue of her father and family is what Erumbu is all about.

Characterisation

The title Erumbu might seem inappropriate for this film initially. However, when you realise that ants lift weights that are 40 times their body weight, you realise that there couldn’t have been a more fitting title for the movie.

The story is about the industrious nature of responsible young children, who start working fervently to make enough money to support their struggling parents.

The characterisation in Erumbu is simply outstanding. Full marks to the director for coming up with characters that are realistic and impactful.

That apart, Erumbu has some really impressive performances to offer, beginning with child actress Monika Siva who plays the silent but strong Pachayamma.

Righteous, patient, hopeful, humble and determined, Pachayamma’s character is inspiring and adorable.

Monika Siva delivers a commendable performance as the young child, who overcomes her own fears to offer solace and support to her younger brother.

Veteran actor Charlie, who plays the central character of Annadurai in Erumbu , delivers yet another memorable performance in this film.

He comes up with a measured and realistic performance, to bring to life the character of Annadurai.

But it is George Maryan, who plays the character of the simpleton Chittu, who steals the thunder.

George Maryan’s character might not be as significant as that of Pachayamma or Annadurai. But the realistic manner in which the actor plays it and the impeccable timing with which he cracks jokes make his performance one of the highlights of the film.

On the technical front, Arun Raj’s music works big time. Both his songs and his background score are very effective. His songs in particular have high retention value and are bound to catch the attention of audiences.

Erumbu is not only a story that can inspire kids but is also a clean entertainer that you can watch with your entire family.

Erumbu Movie Review: Inadequate world-building, predictability makes this a middling film 

The much-celebrated Kaaka Muttai (2015) was the story of two young kids, who go to great extents to dig their teeth into a slice of pizza. In many ways, Erumbu (2023), is not all that different, except that the siblings here want to earn money to save themselves rather than appease a craving. While it definitely had the ingredients of being the Kaaka Muttai of its times, Erumbu becomes just another run-of-the-mill film because of its inadequate world-building and the sheer predictability of it all.

Erumbu revolves around Annadurai (Charle) and his family of six, who all work towards repaying a debt they owe an unscrupulous loan shark (MS Bhaskar). Right from the beginning, we are given scene after scene to acquaint ourselves with this world. We are informed that Kamalam (Susan) is actually the stepmother of Pachayamma (Monika Siva) and Muthu (Shakti Rithvik) and that their biological mother has passed. We are made to understand the importance of a gold ring, which would become the root of all issues soon after. However, this world-building stops at the surface level, and the cracks begin to show around the interval point. While a lot of the actions of the children revolve around their fear of their stepmother, we don't really understand what Kamala did to push them to their limits. Similarly, the film tries to milk a lot of emotions from the brother-sister sentiment. Yet, the speciality of their bond is not really justified, and the emotional segments just become all the more unrelatable. 

Another character in the film that gets a raw deal is George Maryan, who plays a role quite similar to the one he played in Deiva Thirumagal (2011). The writing lets him down, and the situational comedy revolving around his character falls flat eliciting little to no laughs.

Although economical on the run-time, Erumbu is burdened by its usage of one too many songs for putting the wheels on the narrative. The film has around five songs, all of which break into montages to show how far along the children have come in their attempt to earn and save money. While the songs are initially aesthetically pleasing, the quantity of them just makes the film tiring. But composer Arunraj's true potential comes through in his background score for  Erumbu . If only the setting up of the story was convincing enough to compete with the heavy violin stringing in important scenes, the emotions would have been elevated a lot more. 

20 minutes into the film and the plot of Erumbu comes to your mind like it is a story of your own. The film isn't really ambitious and is satisfied in reaching places that you know it would. While there is a comfort in keeping our minds away from thinking ‘What next?’ the predictability stops Erumbu from reaching the possible heights. 

The film is based on the proverb, ‘ Erumbu Oora Kallum Theyum ’, which means the persistence and hard work of an ant can even break the strongest of rocks. Erumbu pits the positivity of children against seemingly insurmountable odds. They never give up and their hard work lays the foundation for something big. Albeit predictable, it has its moments, especially the scenic visuals, a fresh air of optimism, and a heartfelt story of a small family. If this Erumbu had persisted a bit more, probably we too would have relented and given it a bit more leeway, but for now, all we can say is the film is just a middling watch.

Situ's character contributes a lot to the plot. Although he is presented as differently abled, the tiny things he does have a significant influence. The film's humour works in a few instances and helps to reinforce the tale. The two kid actors' performances are equally outstanding. With their characters, they offer a feeling of innocence. The chemistry between the two siblings is evident, and their bond serves as the film's focal point.

In the realm of cinema, some stories are so universal that they resonate with audiences across cultures and generations. “Erumbu” (2023) attempts to capture such a narrative, reminiscent of the acclaimed “Kaaka Muttai” (2015). This film, directed by Suresh G, portrays the tenacious spirit of siblings striving to overcome adversity. While it aspires to be the contemporary equivalent of “ Kaaka Muttai ,” “Erumbu” falls short due to its shallow world-building and predictable plot.

Plot Summary

“Erumbu” revolves around Annadurai (Charle) and his family of six, all working tirelessly to repay a debt owed to an unscrupulous loan shark (MS Bhaskar). From the outset, the film immerses viewers in this world, revealing family dynamics, including the fact that Kamalam (Susan) is the stepmother of Pachayamma (Monika Siva) and Muthu (Shakti Rithvik) after their biological mother’s passing. A gold ring becomes the source of conflict within the family. However, the world-building remains surface-level, and the film’s shortcomings become evident as the story progresses.

Shallow World-building and Missed Opportunities

“Erumbu” stumbles primarily in its world-building. While it introduces viewers to the characters and their struggles, it fails to delve deeper into their backgrounds and motivations. For instance, the audience never fully understands what led Kamala to become the antagonist in the eyes of the children. Similarly, the film attempts to evoke emotions through the brother-sister bond, but it lacks the depth required to make these emotional segments relatable.

Another missed opportunity lies in the character portrayed by George Maryan, whose role resembles that in “Deiva Thirumagal” (2011). Unfortunately, the writing does not do justice to his character, and the situational comedy falls flat, failing to generate laughs.

Musical Overload and Cinematic Potential

Despite its economic runtime, “Erumbu” is burdened by an excessive number of songs, with approximately five featured. While initially aesthetically pleasing, the abundance of songs transforms the film into a somewhat tiresome experience. However, composer Arunraj’s background score shines, enhancing pivotal scenes. With more convincing storytelling, this score could have elevated the emotional impact.

Predictable Yet Heartfelt

“Erumbu” embraces predictability rather than ambition, following a well-trodden path. While predictability can offer comfort by relieving viewers of the burden of anticipating plot twists, it also hinders the film from achieving its full potential. The story’s core theme draws from the proverb, ‘Erumbu Oora Kallum Theyum’ (the persistence and hard work of an ant can even break the strongest of rocks), highlighting the unwavering determination of children facing seemingly insurmountable challenges. Despite its predictability, the film manages to deliver moments of genuine emotion, scenic visuals, and an underlying sense of optimism, offering a heartfelt portrayal of a small family’s struggles.

“Erumbu” may not reach the cinematic heights of its predecessor, “Kaaka Muttai,” but it tells a compelling tale of resilience and familial bonds. The film’s shortcomings in world-building and predictability are balanced by its moments of sincerity, scenic beauty, and a positive outlook. While “Erumbu” may not persist in your memory, it offers a worthwhile, albeit middling, cinematic experience.

சென்னை: சார்லி, எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர் உள்ளிட்ட பலர் நடித்துள்ள ‘எறும்பு’ படம் ஜூலை 31-ம் தேதி ஓடிடியில் வெளியாகும் என அதிகாரபூர்வமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இயக்குநர் சுரேஷ் ஜி இயக்கத்தில் சார்லி எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர், ஜார்ஜ் மரியன், மோனிகா சிவா, சக்தி ரித்விக் உள்ளிட்ட பலர் நடித்துள்ள படம் ‘எறும்பு’. சுரேஷ் குணசேகரன் தயாரித்துள்ள இப்படத்துக்கு அருண் ராஜ் இசையமைத்துள்ளார். குறைந்த பட்ஜெட்டில் அளவான கதாபாத்திரங்களுடன் கதைக்கு முக்கியத்தும் கொடுத்து உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இப்படம் கடந்த ஜூன் 16-ம் தேதி திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியானது.

ஃபீல் குட் படமாக வரவேற்பை பெற்ற இப்படம் அமேசான் ப்ரைம் ஓடிடி தளத்தில் ஜூலை 31-ம் தேதி வெளியாகும் என அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Kazhuvethi Moorkkan review: This nuanced story needed better craftsmanship

Kazhuvethi Moorkkan begins with illustrations and a voiceover about the horrific practice carried out in ancient Tamil Nadu, where those on death row were impaled by putting them on a stake or a spire that went through their body vertically. The graphic details are necessary because Kazhuvu in the film’s title Kazhuvethi (the one who puts someone on the stake) denotes the spire. So, the title gives away what the hero will do in the climax. While there’s no shock involved here, the film’s depiction of the intricacies of the caste system and its place in contemporary politics is quite surprising. Director SY Gauthama Raj does not hold anything back while criticising the casteism that exists not just on the top level of Varnashram but even at the bottom. Kazhuvethi Moorkkan is perhaps the first film to do so in the anti-caste film movement in Tamil Nadu, which started with Pa Ranjith’s Madras (2014) .

Right after the release of Kabali, Pa Ranjith, in an interview with a Tamil TV channel, had said that there’s no use of Ambedkar being born in a socially backward class anymore. He said Ambedkar should come from the upper class of society, which would bring about a change. Kazhuvethi Moorkkan has a similar premise. Moorkkan (Arulnithi) belongs to a dominant caste in Ramanthapuram. The caste names in the films are not said out loud for obvious reasons, but the actor’s moustache is a giveaway. The film delves into even the politics behind the moustache. Bhoominatha (Santhosh Pratap), Moorkan’s beloved friend, who belongs to the oppressed community, points out that one has to belong to a certain caste to even grow a big moustache as Moorkkan. In another instance, an ageing bank security guard, who is ordered to get rid of Moorkan, pleads to him secretly to leave without causing him any trouble. The guard points out how they both have the same kind of moustache, which is the only qualification he has for the job. The brilliant writing exposes the frailty behind the twirling moustaches.

Bhoomi is a social activist, who works for the progress of his community. On the other hand, Moorkkan is a jobless ruffian, who stands up for Bhoomi whenever he has to. Their friendship is odd in the eyes of the rest of the villagers and even irritates the upper caste people. When the poster of an upper caste leader is torn and soiled, Bhoomi ends up facing the wrath of the leader (Rajasimman), who schemes to separate Moorkkan and Bhoomi. Things go as per his plans but when Moorkkan finally realises he was played, he seeks revenge. Perhaps, at the core, there’s no novelty with respect to the story of the film. Starting with Seevalaperi Pandi (1994), many films over the years have had similar plots of betrayal and exile. But Kazhuvethi Moorkkan stands apart because of its politics, which gives a cross-sectional view of the relationship between caste and politics in Tamil Nadu .

The top leader of the dominant caste brings both members of the ruling and opposition parties to hunt down Morkkan. He says, “Be it the ruling party or the opposition, at the end of the day, it should be us at the top.” It reflects the condition of the current parties–even the ones that claim to be progressive. The film also brings out the absurdity of fights between the castes. Moorkkan screams, “Neenga oruthan thalaiku mela irukeenga nenachutu irukeenga… neengala oruthan kaaluku kila than nu sollitu thirirainga (You claim to be standing on top of someone’s head… but the ones above you claim you are under their foot).”

Yet, for all the complexities in the writing, the film needed much better craftsmanship. Instead, from editing to D. Imman’s abysmal background score, the film is let down by its technical crew. There’s a lack of seamless flow with the scenes, and in many instances, it becomes pretty shoddy with choppy edits. On top of that, the background score is painfully generic and melodramatic. There is no innovation but template sounds that just flatly denote the mood of the song instead of complementing it–the kind you see in TV operas. Lastly, Tamil directors are under no compulsion to write romance if they are bad at it. More so, when the whole affair doesn’t add any value to the main plotline. Gauthaman goes out of his way to make Dushara’s character relevant to the story, but it only impedes the screenplay. The intention here is right, but the execution falters– that applies to the whole movie.
