Degree Program Summary:

The UGA Department of Psychology, within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, is a nationally recognized department with award-winning professors who are dedicated to providing the highest quality graduate education possible to our graduate students. The Department of Psychology offers graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

Graduate work leading to the PhD degree is offered in behavioral and brain sciences; clinical psychology; and industrial–organizational psychology. Students are admitted directly into one of the three doctoral programs, and they are ordinarily required to obtain the master’s degree on the way to the doctoral degree. Foreign language proficiency is not required by the department.

Research foci within the behavioral and brain sciences program include neuroscience and behavior, cognitive/experimental psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, or a combination of these. The clinical program is a scientist practitioner model program accredited by the American Psychological Association. It seeks to prepare the student for a variety of professional roles by providing a solid foundation in technique, theory and research in clinical psychology. The industrial–organizational program permits the student to concentrate in leadership, mentoring, human factors psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, psychometrics, and related areas.

Specialized facilities for graduate training/research in psychology include: the Psychology Clinic, which provides diagnostic and therapeutic services; the University Testing and Evaluation Center; a child development subject pool, and infant and child research laboratories both within the department and at the McPhaul Children’s Center; the Institute for Behavioral Research; the Institute of Gerontology; laboratories for human psychophysiological and electroencephalographic studies; the Bio-Imaging Center; as well as a variety of laboratories within the realm of cognitive / experimental psychology; animal laboratories for behavioral and neuroscience research; and a colony of nonhuman primates for behavioral studies.

Students are expected to begin graduate work in the fall semester following their admission. The department does not require applications for financial aid; any student considered eligible by the department will be notified if additional information is required.

Psychology Doctoral Programs in Georgia

Situated in the southeastern region of the United States along the Atlantic Ocean, Georgia is the 24th most extensive and 8th most populous state. Named after King George II of Great Britain, Georgia is known throughout history for being the last of the original 13 colonies established and the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology

The Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology aims to educate professional clinical psychologists with a firm foundation in research, theory, and clinical practice. As a clinical science program, students are highly engaged in a rigorous curriculum built on assessment, etiology, diagnosis, treatment interventions, and psychopathology. Beyond what is learned within the classroom walls, students participate firsthand in research projects with a faculty mentor, supervised clinical practicum at the Psychological Center or mental health facilities in the greater Atlanta community, and a one-semester teaching associateship for an undergraduate course. Although the program may be completed within four years, the majority of students need five or six years to fulfill all requirements for the Ph.D. degree.

Georgia State University

As one of the leading universities in the nation for graduating students from diverse backgrounds, Georgia State University is an enterprising public research institution located in the heart of Atlanta with unsurpassed connections to the various opportunities in the large metropolitan center. Since being founded in 1913, Georgia State is currently celebrating its centennial year by expanding its campus to accommodate the more than 32,000 students that now call the university home. The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program intends to educate students for contemporary and innovative careers in clinical practice, teaching, and/or research. Following a scientist-practitioner model of training, students in the program actively engage in hands-on learning experience at the on-campus Psychology Training Clinic for Research, Therapy, and Assessment as well as the Regents Center for Learning Disorders. If interested, students can choose to complete a dual training program in Clinical-Neuropsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience or Community-Clinical Psychology. With a strong commitment to diversity, the program ensures that students have a multitude of clinical opportunities with multicultural children, adolescents, and adults.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counseling Psychology

Ranked as the 4th in the nation by the Chronicle of Higher Education for a high level of research productivity in counseling psychology, the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology program is designed to provide advanced training in theory, research, and clinical practice. Within the 102 semester hours required for completion of the degree, students work as research assistants to their advising professor through a 16-hour per week graduate assistantship that provides a small stipend to offset tuition costs. Students also actively participate in practicum experiences at the GSU Counseling Center, complete a pre-dissertation and dissertation research project, and teach undergraduate psychology courses under the supervision of faculty members.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in School Psychology

Fully recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the Ph.D. in School Psychology program emphasizes training for positions that apply psychology theories and skills to school-related problems, including learning, emotional, and behavioral problems. The program is designed to train psychologists for leadership roles in public or private schools, school-based health centers, clinics, hospitals, universities, private practices, and government agencies. In order to achieve the Ph.D. degree, students must complete at least 71 semester hours, including a doctoral internship and dissertation research project.

Past recipient of the Outstanding Training Program Award by the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program is founded on a strong research emphasis in the clinical science perspective. The goals of the program are to provide students with knowledge in psychology as a method of inquiry into human behavior, develop competence in theoretical and research issues, build culturally competent skills, and ensure students have the ability to function in a research-oriented academic or applied clinical practice setting. Students engaged in the program receive valuable experience at the Institute for Behavioral Research (IBR), Bioimaging Research Center (BIRC), and Psychology Clinic right on campus.

The Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology program has been designed to prepare scientist-practitioners who will provide the highest level of professional competency, scholarship, research, and clinical practice in the field. With a focus on personal and interpersonal functioning across the age spectrum, the program encompasses a broad range of practices at the emotional, social, vocational, developmental, educational, and organizational levels. The program consists of five main sections of clinical practice, counseling theory foundations, research design and analysis, supervision of instruction, and general psychology electives. Beyond a master’s degree, the doctoral program requires three years of on-campus graduate studies and an addition year for an APA-approved clinical counseling internship.

Designed to be consistent with licensure and certification in school psychology in Georgia and most other states, the Ph.D. in School Psychology program is committed to preparing competent practitioners for practice with school-aged children and adolescents in various educational settings. Throughout the five-year program of study, students are required to complete core educational psychology courses, six clinical practicum experiences, master’s thesis project, doctoral dissertation, and written or oral comprehensive examinations. Before completion of the degree can be granted, students are required to complete a 2,000-hour full-time advanced internship in an accredited school setting with supervision by a psychologist licensed by the Georgia State Board of Psychology.

Georgia Southern University

The Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies at Georgia Southern began offering a clinical psychology Psy.D. after educational and healthcare leaders grew increasingly concerned about the lack of licensed psychologists in the underserved rural areas of Georgia and the entire American South. Since the first cohort was accepted into the program in 2007, only 39 graduates have completed the program, which speaks to its selectivity and prestige. Nearly all (96%) of graduates since the start of the program have earned professional licensure.

The long history of the psychology doctoral programs offered through the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ psychology department include a clinical psychology Ph.D., as well as doctoral degrees in industrial-organizational psychology, a field that boasts an average national wage of nearly $100,000, and behavior and brain sciences, including development, neuroscience and health psychology. Between 2009 and 2019, 96% of clinical psychology Ph.D. graduates earned professional licensure .

The program has been APA-accredited since 1963, and over the past 10 years, 30 graduates have completed their clinical doctorates. In that time, 67% of graduates have gone on to earn professional licensure, and while tuition for the program is the highest among psychology doctoral programs listed here, all students accepted into the program over the past 10 years have received fellowships or other awards that included tuition waivers.

Georgia Southern’s doctoral psychology department confers only one type of degree, a Ph.D. in Psychology, but several concentration areas are available, including clinical, cognitive, community, developmental and neuropsychology. The clinical Ph.D. at Georgia Southern first earned APA accreditation in 1973, and the program typically confers 10-12 clinical Ph.D. degrees every year. About 67% of clinical psychology graduates earned professional licensure over the past decade.

How To Become A Practicing Psychologist In Georgia

Completing a challenging-but-rewarding academic program isn’t the only thing required to become a psychologist in Georgia. Let’s take a look at the steps needed to begin practicing as a professional psychologist.

• Earn a bachelor’s degree in an applicable field — ideally psychology. While it’s not always necessary to earn a bachelor’s in psychology, it’s a big help in establishing a foundation, and it will make a student seem like a better candidate to admissions officers. Other possible fields include biology, statistics and other science-related areas. Some Psy.D. programs require students to earn a master’s degree before applying, but this varies from school to school, so be sure to find out what’s expected at the schools that draw your interest.
• Earn a doctoral degree. In this case, a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). It’s important to note that a person with a Ph.D. could potentially also become a licensed psychologist, but they may lack the internship and practicum hours in psychology field work that are baked into most Psy.D. programs.
• Meet state requirements. In our state, the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists processes licensure applications and investigates complaints issued against licensed professionals in the state. In addition to a doctoral degree, the board requires at least 1,500 hours of supervised postdoctoral work and the passage of three examinations, the National Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology , the state jurisprudence examination and an oral exam conducted by board members.
• Remain licensed, and keep up with requirements. Once an individual has earned their license , they must ensure their licensure remains valid by complying with all renewal processes and applicable fees.

Georgia Clinical Psychologist Salary and Job Outlook

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , clinical, counseling and school psychologists in Georgia are among the most well-compensated in the nation, earning an average annual wage of $90,760, one of the highest in the South. Not only is the typical psychologist wage in Georgia among the best in the region, it’s nearly double the average wage of $49,620 for all jobs in the state.

While the typical American job is expected to see about 5% growth over the next decade, psychologist jobs are projected to grow much more rapidly. With six Atlanta-area campuses and over 52,000 students , Georgia State University is a very large school with a wide reach across the Peach State. Georgia State offers dozens of academic programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. This includes the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology discussed below.

One of the unique features of Georgia State is its extremely diverse student body. The school is home to a large contingent of minority students and ranks first among schools for the number of African-American graduates.

Clinical Psychology Graduate Program Information

Georgia State’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is aligned with the American Psychological Association’s (APA) requirements for clinical training. Furthermore, this program prepares you for licensure as a clinical psychologist in most states and prepares you for certification from the American Board of Professional Psychologists (ABPP) .

This full-time residential program typically takes about six to seven years to complete. During your time in the program, you will concentrate your studies in one of three areas: General Clinical Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, or Clinical Community Psychology.

Though the courses you take will vary somewhat from one specialization to the next, you can expect to take courses in:

• Research Methods in Psychology
• Developmental Methods
• History of Psychology
• Social Psychology
• Psychopharmacology

In addition to coursework, you will complete a master’s thesis, a doctoral dissertation, and a minimum of one year of internship experiences. A general exam is also required, which is administered in written and oral forms after the completion of the required coursework for this degree.

You must provide the following materials with your admission application:

• A $50 application fee
• A statement of purpose
• A resume or curriculum vitae
• Three letters of recommendation
• Transcripts from each college or university attended
• A writing sample

You must also have a background in psychology. A bachelor’s degree in psychology is not necessary, but the completion of several psychology courses at the undergraduate level is needed.

Founded in 1906 , Georgia Southern University (GSU) was originally established as an agricultural teaching school. Over time, though, GSU has grown into a comprehensive public four-year university with more than 27,000 students .

In fact, there are nearly 150 different programs of study for undergraduate and graduate students, including those at the doctoral level. Psychology is one of the most popular majors at GSU, and as such, there are a number of graduate programs available.

Like many other schools in Georgia, GSU welcomes students from all over the nation and the world. The contributions of students from diverse perspectives foster an enriching learning environment in which you can learn how to utilize your unique skills to help people from varying walks of life.

What’s more, GSU is recognized as a military-friendly institution and an environmentally-friendly school as well.

The Doctor of Clinical Psychology program at Georgia Southern culminates in a PsyD. Unlike a Ph.D., which is often geared towards research and academic applications, a PsyD program focuses on the practical application of professional tools and techniques in a clinical setting.

This APA-accredited program follows the practitioner-scholar model of instruction. This means you will gain crucial clinical psychology skills for practice while also gaining a deep understanding of the history, systems, and techniques of psychology. This program also specifically prepares you for working with underserved communities in the rural south.

Throughout the program, you will take courses exploring diverse psychology topics. These include:

This program also requires that you complete and defend a doctoral dissertation. You must also pass a qualifying examination. Furthermore, practicum and internship components are required to graduate. The internship is a full year experience with 2,000 hours required to complete.

A unique feature of this program is that you’re required to complete ten or more sessions of personal psychotherapy. This requirement aids in exploring any blind spots you might have that could impact the way you practice. It also helps you further develop your clinical psychology skills.

The University of Georgia (UGA) is one of the most recognizable school systems in the nation. Part of the reason for this is the university’s top-tier athletics programs. But more than that, it’s because the school has been around for so long.

UGA was founded in 1785 in the aftermath of the Civil War. As such, it is the oldest public university in Georgia and one of the oldest universities in the United States.

UGA has grown and changed immensely over the more than 235 years of its existence. The university now has 18 schools and colleges that offer hundreds of degree programs.

The student body has also grown, with current enrollment at more than 30,000 . UGA isn’t just known for being a large school with many programs of study – it’s also well respected for its academics.

The University of Georgia’s Clinical Doctoral Program was developed according to the clinical science model. This model espouses that training should have an empirical basis, so much of the program’s curriculum focuses on the science of psychology as well as its clinical applications.

To give you a broad-based experience, you will participate in many different types of learning. This includes coursework, teaching opportunities, and psychological research. You will also take part in clinical practicum and internship activities that provide you with real-world experience applying what you have learned in the program.

You will have the chance to conduct research in a variety of settings at the University of Georgia. This includes:

• The Biomedical and Translational Sciences Institute
• The Bio-Imaging Research Center
• The Owens Institute for Behavioral Research

Furthermore, you will gain clinical experience by working at UGA’s Psychology Clinic . The clinic provides you the chance to work in one-on-one and group settings with clients. There are also facilities for observing and assessing clients of all ages, including children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.

Augusta University (AU) got its start in 1828 when the Georgia State Assembly approved the formation of a medical school, the Medical College of Georgia. The college had just seven faculty members at that point, but in the years since, Augusta University has grown in size and the scope of the programs it offers.

AU is a small school with fewer than 10,000 students. The small school environment means you will have smaller class sizes and more individualized instruction from your teachers.

Most students on campus are undergraduates, but there are more than 2,000 graduate students as well. With more than 150 programs of study, AU offers you plentiful pathways to get the education you need to fulfill your career goals.

The Master of Science in Psychology from Augusta University offers three specialization areas, including one in clinical psychology. This 60-credit track requires about three years of full-time study to complete. The program is based on the cohort model, so you will continue through the program with the same set of classmates.

In addition to traditional graduate-level coursework, you must also complete a 600-hour clinical internship. This component is required as part of your preparation for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia.

You also have the opportunity to tailor your studies to your unique needs. For example, you get individual mentoring from a faculty member who helps guide you through your studies. You can also choose whether to complete a thesis or not, depending on your future goals.

Additionally, AU’s program gives you the choice of dozens of internship placements so you can practice your clinical psychology skills in settings that best prepare you for your future career.

This program has a 91 percent employment rate among its graduates, so the tools you gain during your studies are very likely to lead to a job upon graduation.

You can start the application process online. To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Have a minimum 3.0 GPA for all undergraduate coursework

What are the Clinical Psychology Work Opportunities in Georgia?

As a master’s-level or doctoral-level clinical psychologist, you can expect good job prospects in all corners of the state. Large cities like Atlanta have a constant need for qualified clinical psychologists simply due to the size of the population. These opportunities come in many forms.

For example, you might provide contract clinical psychology services to local law enforcement or correctional agencies. In that capacity, you might conduct psychological evaluations for inmates, provide training for law enforcement officers, or provide counseling services to officers that have been involved in a shooting.

As another example, you might establish a private practice and offer one-on-one counseling services to specific types of clients. You might specialize in providing services to children or adolescents, people with eating disorders, or couples and families, to name a few options.

There are many opportunities for work in rural areas, too. The less-populated areas of Georgia are historically underserved and in need of clinical psychology services. Acceptance Process

If you are offered a position in our graduate program, you will receive the opportunity to visit us during a recruitment weekend in February. You will receive more details about this in your acceptance letter. You will also receive a formal letter stating your offer of admission and all information about your financial support. You will have to formally accept this offer by the date indicated in the letter.

HIRING - CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, PSYCHOLOGY

The Department of Psychology at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full time, non‐tenure‐track  Clinical Assistant Professor .   The successful candidate will support the training mission of the department’s in-house Psychology Clinic ( http://www.psychology.uga.edu/clinic )  by providing supervision to doctoral students in a variety of evidence‐based assessments and interventions for children, adolescents, and young adults.  Skills in psychoeducational assessment are necessary. The successful candidate will also teach clinically related and general Psychology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This is a 12‐month position and is expected to begin no later than Fall 2025. 

Successful candidates will   have a Ph.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program.   The candidate will be licensed or license-eligible to practice in the State of Georgia. 

The successful candidate will join a nationally prominent and productive faculty and department interested in promoting the careers of junior faculty. The Clinical Psychology Program has a clinical science model and is dually accredited by  APA  and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System ( PCSAS ).

The Department of Psychology has approximately 45 faculty members, 90 doctoral students, and approximately 2100 undergraduate Psychology majors. The Clinical Psychology Program has approximately 10 faculty and 35 graduate students. The department is committed to promoting the careers of junior faculty.  UGA is a land and sea grant institution located in Athens, 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, the state capital ( www.visitathensga.com ;  www.uga.edu ).
